The prospect for recovery of rare earths from red mud, the bauxite tailings from the production of alumina is examined. The Jamaican red mud by far has the higher trace concentrations of lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, and yttrium. Scandium is also present. The dissolution of the rare earths is a major extraction problem because of the large volume of other materials present. The recovery processes that have been proposed include the production of co-products such as iron, alumina, and titania concentrates, with the rare earths going with the titania A critical examination of the possible chemical processes for the complete utilization of the red mud are presented Recommendations for research projects considered to be important in the development of a chemical separation process where no pig iron product is contemplated are also discussed.

It is well known that most North American gold deposits are of a hydrothermal origin and therefore they are often associated with sulphide minerals such as pyrite and arsenopyrite. When the precious metals in such ores are held captive inside sulphide crystals, the ores are called refractory because they do not respond to treatment by direct cyanidation. In these cases, it is necessary to recover the contained precious metals using high temperature treatments such as smelting or roasting, or high pressure leaching processes to break down the sulphide crystal matrices and thus liberate the precious metals for subsequent extraction by cyanidation. Sulphidic gold ores containing arsenic and/or antimony are considerably more difficult to treat because, in addition to their refractory nature, the arsenic and antimony content also prohibits treatment by direct cyanidation or amalgamation. These ores must be milled and their sulphidic gold values concentrated by flotation. The resultant concentrates must then be roasted to break down the sulphides before cyanide treatment can be applied.

The increase in production of continuous casting machines requires long ladle sequences without interruption. Very often the production schedule has to accommodate a variety of steel grades. In such cases downgrading may be inevitable. Models must be made available to study the alternatives that would make possible mixing of steels in the tundish but minimizing the losses due to downgrading the slabs. Physical modeling was used to evaluate the influence of variables such as internal geometry of the tundish, presence of turbulence inhibitors, depth of ladle long nozzle, weight of steel in the tundish, steel throughput upon the tundish transition curve. Expressions for minimum residence time and transition period have been determined. Mixing-transition is allowed to continue inside the liquid pool in the mold and the final solute distribution in a given cross section is captured by a solidification model. The result is a map of the transition in the final product.

Today, with a stringent economic and environmental climate prevailing in the copper business, there is increased interest in evaluating new processing alternatives for production. Hydrometallurgical pressure oxidation of copper concentrates is one of the more viable approaches and several technological candidates have emerged. Of these, an overlooked but industrially proven methodology utilizing nitrogen species catalyzation in the oxidizing pressure leach system may prove to be a feasible process alternative for the future. In this paper, the history of the system and its application to chalcopyrite concentrates will be outlined. In particular, a methodology for effective treatment of precious metals bearing chalcopyrite concentrates via partial oxidation at low temperatures and pressures will be discussed. Finally, the perceived economics of this unique industrially proven process will be delineated.

Interfacial emulsion generated in copper solvent extraction is an inhomogeneous O/W emulsion that consists of organic phase, aqueous phase and solid particles. In order to determine what kind of components in organic phase promotes the emulsion, the organic phase separated from the interfacial crud provided by Dexing Copper Mine in Jiangxi, China was analyzed for its components by combined gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy. It was found that many kinds of emphiphiles containing such hydrophilic groups as carbonyl, carboxyl, or acylamine existed in organic phase, most of which were originated from the reagent degradation. Conclusively, Lix984N would degrade gradually during a long-term contact with the acidic aqueous feed and strip reagents. Lix84 and nonylphenol, as effective components of Lix984N, degraded almost completely after long-term recycling. As a result, the effective components of Lix984N were far lower in concentration than the dense-aromatic impurities derived from the diluent and the degradation products in total. The degradation of Lix984N would deteriorate solvent extraction, disengagement performance and result in more serious interfacial emulsion.

PT. Smelting Co. was established in February, 1996 to construct and operate the Gresik Smelter and Refinery. The construction work of first Copper Smelter and Refinery in Indonesia was completed in the end of August, 1998 and it was put into the integrated test operation in December, 1998. Gresik Smelter and Refinery is designed to produce 200,000 tpy of copper cathode from copper concentrate supplied from Grasberg Mine of PT. Freeport Indonesia Company in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. As by product 592,000 tpy of sulfuric acid, 382,000 tpy of slag, 31,000 tpy of gypsum and 480 tpy of slime will be produced in the full operation. Copper losses in slags are of great concern, specially in smelting and slag cleaning processes. It is widely accepted that the suspension of metallic copper and matte droplets is strongly affected by the viscosity of the slag. The Chuquicamata Division of Codelco- Chile produces concentrates high in zinc, an element which reports mainly to the slag phase. The ZnO may affect the viscosity and therefore the copper losses. This work aimed to investigate the effect of lime to control the viscosity of slags, and in turn to control the copper losses. By using the experimental viscosity data and the Stoke's law, the settling rate of matte prills in various slags was estimated. The results indicate the possibility of increasing the recovery of copper and/or decrease the process time.

Tri-calcium aluminate (TCA) is a dominant alkaline component of the red mud residue from the Bayer process. A method being considered for industrial implementation partially neutralizes the residue by contacting it with gaseous CO2. This paper outlines the chemistry of CO2neutralisation of TCA under conditions relevant to the treatment of Bayer residue. CO2 neutralisation of the liquor is fast. It results in the formation of amorphous aluminium hydroxide and dawsonite that agglomerate together. Neutralisation of solid TCA is slower and leads to the formation of calcite, dawsonite and amorphous aluminium hydroxide. The dissolution of TCA in partially neutralised slurries causes pH reversion. However the carbonated solutions contain a store of bicarbonate that can supply aqueous carbon dioxide to complete the transformation. The pH at which the carbonation is carried out will affect the degree of TCA transformation during the carbonation process. In particular, if the pH of the carbonation is too low (near 7.0), calcite precipitation is inhibited and the degree of transformation is low. Controlling the carbonation pH helps to optimise the neutralisation process.

The Sepon Copper Project is located in Laos and has a mineable reserve of approximately 16Mt of ore grading 5% copper with minor gold and silver values. The deposit is a clay-hosted secondary copper mineral suite, predominantly chalcocitic in nature with associated pyrite. The current project design is based on the production of 60,000t/a of LME Grade A cathode by an acid leaching process followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning. Significant metallurgical testwork was conducted as part of the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) with process challenges identified and overcome at each phase of testing. Flowsheet configuration is geared to autogenously generating sufficient acid and ferric iron to meet gangue acid consumption and to leach the copper. The ability to maintain acid and ferric levels in the process liquors is strongly influenced by the proportion of pyrite in the ore presented to the autoclave. This paper will outline flowsheet development from preliminary variability testing to pilot plant and DFS design. The Sepon process solution seeks a balance between operability and capital/operating costs, and provides insights into the basic mechanisms influencing flowsheet selection for these ore types.

In the production of Mn-alloys, the Boudouard reaction significantly influences the mass and energy balance. The endothermic nature of this reaction requires more energy for the process, while the direct consumption of carbon is reflected in the greater demand for carbonaceous raw materials. Therefore, it is desirable to eliminate or suppress the reaction. The kinetics of the Boudouard reaction are a function of many factors, of which coke properties and the conditions around the particles (i.e. temperature, gas composition) seem to be the most important. In the present study properties of selected single source and commercial metallurgical cokes are compared with reactivity results. The single source cokes represent a single coal that has been carbonized in a laboratory scale furnace. The commercial cokes are products of carbonization of coal blends under industrial conditions. The coke properties include proximate, ultimate and ash analysis. Also, coke petrography with carbon forms is included. The reactivity tests were performed on different particle sizes at various temperatures, gas compositions and gas flow rates. The experimental parameters were chosen to simulate the conditions in an industrial furnace. The results show that highly graphitized structure of cokes, minimal surface area and a low concentration of ash retard the reactivity. Of the other factors, the temperature and the gas composition have the greatest impact on the reactivity.

Copper Refineries Ltd. (CRL), Townsville is Australia's largest producer and exporter of refined copper cathode. This status has been maintained by the implementation of a significant capital works program that increased the production capacity to 270,000 t/y by June 1999. In 1979, CRL was the first in the world to commission the ISA Process Technology which has now been marketed to 47 licensees worldwide. The new tankhouse design has focused particular attention on customer requirements, operational improvements, materials handling and equipment modernisation. Equipment which has been upgraded includes cranes, anode preparation, cathode stripping and scrap washing machines along with the total replacement of the electrolyte and electrical reticulation systems. Side stream electrolyte filtration has been introduced. Improvements to electrode alignment afforded by the conversion to polymer concrete cells, precise electrode location, and the upgrade of the electrode handling machines will ensure that CRL. continues to be one of the world's major quality copper cathode producers.

Aluminium alloy matrix cast composites have been synthesised by incorporating fine graphite powders (0.5 - 20 µm size) and chopped carbon fibres (6.5 pm P). 3-6 mm length) by liquid metallurgy technique. Incorporation of these second phase materials exceeding 6-8 wt% invariably resulted in agglomeration of the dispersoids and sometimes leading to even total rejection. It was found that small additions of mischmetal (1-3 wt%) during dispersion resulted in better incorporation without much agglomeration of the dispersoid as evident from the macro and micro structures of the composites. Further, the additions of mischmetal increased the volume of the effective incorporation of the dispersoid even to the extent 50- 60%. The mischmetal addition results in a significant increase in the power factor of the stirrer motor indicating an apparent increase in the viscosity of the system. The higher viscosity of the melt increase the shear transmission conditions within the melt during stirring thereby breaking the agglomerates of the dispersoids. The increased viscosity of the melt seems to be due to the formation rare earth - aluminium inter metallics precipitation, as observed in the metallographic studies, thereby making the process a "pseudorheocasting? technique. A provisional patent has been filed based on this work.

A BASIC language program has been written that simulates the performance of an integrated solvent extraction circuit consisting of an extractor, a reflux fed scrubber, and a stripper. The program is designed to simulate the performance of a circuit having an aqueous feed containing each of the lanthanides as well as yttrium. The Kremser equation is used to determine the separation occuring in each section of the circuit. The required input variables are the feed composition, the separation factors, the light key extraction factors and extractor feed zone distribution coefficient, the number of stages, and the reflux ratios. The program calculates the composition of the streams at each node in the circuit, the total loading, and the remaining distribution coefficients. User interaction with the program is essential. The program has no capability to determine if the calculated values are consistent with various real restraints. Knowledge of the physical, chemical, and equilibrium behavior is essential to successfully utilize the program. The number of iterations required to achieve steady-state provides insight to the circuit response times. With suitable supervision the program can be used as a simulator for operator training.

At the Chuquicamata Division of Codelco-Chile high arsenic concentrates are produced, which at the smelter are processed via the Outokumpu Flash Furnace and Teniente Converters to obtain copper mattes. In the case of the Teniente Converters the production of matte grade near white metal composition is a common practice since the eighties and provided in the pyrometallurgical route no appropiate measures are taken, penalties have to be paid because of arsenic content in the anodes. During smelting huge volume of slag is produced and elimination of arsenic by slagging at this step is not economically attractive. Although during fire refining is possible to eliminate arsenic by use of mixtures of calcium and sodium carbonates this alternative is expensive, takes long process time and decreases the lifetime of the refractory lining. In spite of these facts a reasonably way to control arsenic in metal, and therefore in the anode, is taking, action in the converting step. The effects of oxygen and arsenic content in metal, arsenic in white metal and basicity index of the slag upon the distribution coefficient of arsenic between metal and slag were investigated at pilot and industrial levels. The best results are obtained for metals around 7,000 ppm oxygen and 0.3 basicity index slag, which results in a 5.7 distribution coefficient for a 5,800 - 7,100 ppm arsenic content in white metal, 18%-24% CaO slag at 1473 - 1523K. Furthermore, no significant/visible refractory wear has been realized.

?Preg-robbing? is the active adsorption of gold from cyanide solution by the ore components. The role of carbonaceous coatings on chalcopyrite surfaces in the preg-robbing of chalcopyrite has been investigated by using pure chalcopyrite and a copper concentrate. Activated carbon and graphite were chosen as representative carbonaceous contaminants. It was found that the carbonaceous coatings enhanced the preg-robbing of chalcopyrite. Activated carbon coating increased gold adsorption onto chalcopyrite to a lager extent, in comparison with graphite coating. In the preg-robbing of the copper concentrate, gold adsorption was increased to larger extent at finer particle sizes and at higher contents of activated carbon or graphite. The preg-robbing of chalcopyrite was reduced or eliminated, depending on the concentrations of free cyanide. However, the gold adsorption on the carbon and graphite coated chalcopyrite could not be avoided even at higher cyanide concentrations, and this adsorption was solely attributed to the carbonaceous coatings. Zeta potential studies indicated that the carbonaceous coatings reduced the negativity of the chalcopyrite surface charge. As shown by SEM analysis, gold not only accumulated at the edges and defect sites, but was also spotted on the smooth surfaces of chalcopyrite with carbon or graphite present. XPS results revealed that gold was strongly reduced on chalcopyrite surfaces, with the sulfide ions of the chalcopyrite being oxidized to elemental sulfur. Diagnostic elution indicated three mechanisms contributing to gold take-up by chalcopyrite, i.e. gold reduction, physical adsorption and chemical adsorption.

"Stricter environmental regulations demand for safer treatment and disposal of incineratior fly ashes. So far no sound technology and processes are available for a sustainable and ecological treatment of the waste incineration ashes, and only partial treatment is practised for temporary and short-term solutions. New processes and technology need to be developed for comprehensive utilization and detoxification of the MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) incinerator residues. The objective of the current research is to better understand the behaviour of the environmental harmful elements during low or high temperature treatment, and to find an optimum route for an efficient processing of the incineration fly ash. In the present study, the fly ashes including boiler ash and ESP (Electrostatic Precipitator) ash sampled from a MSW incinerator were washed with warm water, and the residues were dried and sintered or vitrified at high temperatures. The solutions from ash washing were analysed, and will be treated for salt extraction and purification. The ash residues before and after thermal treatment were also analysed. The results of vitrification and thermal behaviour were compared with those from the ashes without pre-washing. It was found that water pre-washing is an efficient way to remove certain water-dissolvable volatile salts such as chlorides, and thus the secondary emissions during vitrification could be reduced. INTRODUCTION The air pollution control residues from MSW incineration are classified as harzardous waste, including boiler ash, ESP ash and filter cake. The boiler ash is the firstly settled flue dust in the dust-collecting equipment under the boiler, the ESP ash is collected by an electrostatic precipitator in the second step, finally the flue-gas is further cleaned by the wet-scrubbers and residues are accumulated in the filter cake. Both the boiler ash and ESP ash are classified as hazardous materials, harmful to the environment due to the high concentrations of environmental hazardous elements. However, due to the different locations of the ash collection, the boiler ash has different compositions compared to the ESP ash, and is considered less toxic. Fly ash is generally toxic and with low bulk density, and has to be treated before final disposal. The current industrial practice is normally the landfilling after partial detoxification such as cement solidification."

Through-hole copper plating is performed to make a multi-layer printed circuit board. The through hole plating is first carried out by Pd catalyst treatment, followed by copper non-electric plating. The amount of Pd catalyst used in one plant is about 0.25-2 m3/month (8 g/dm3 PdCl2 base) depending on the plant scale, and the cost of the catalyst reaches 17,000¬I35,000 US$/month. In this study, the flow and material balance of a Pd in Pd catalyst treatment process was investigated. About 60% of Pd catalyst adheres on the through-hole and other part of setup, while 25% is released into the washing liquor. Pd in the washing liquor should be collected by a suitable method like a pressure filtration using diatomite. The material balance of Pd in Pd catalyst treatment process and the recovery method of Pd from waste solution containing Pd catalyst was investigated.

Ferrites have been used to separate a wide range of substances such as dissolved metal species, particulate matter, and organic and biological materials; they have been used almost exclusively for metal waste treatment applications. The versatility of the ferrite waste treatment technique is evident in the wide variety of application methods. Furthermore, ferrites can be used to remove selected impurities in feed solutions containing metal products requiring purification. A brief overview of ferrite properties and recent applications for metal recovery and waste processing will be presented.
