The rapid growth of highwall mining in the Appalachian coalfields has resulted in unique safety concerns. Due to the concentration of activity at the base of the highwall and the potentially destabilizing influence of the mining process, proper mine planning and continual monitoring of the ground conditions is essential to ensure a safe and productive operation. This will also help to minimize the need to recover equipment that has become entrapped underground, and the subsequent hazards associated with a recovery operation. Adequate geotechnical site investigation and rational design methods should enable mine planners to properly account for the site-specific conditions that influence web and abutment pillar, roof, floor, and highwall stability. This paper examines the growth of highwall mining, provides a general overview of the various safety concerns, and reviews the modes of highwall failure as they relate to a highwall mining operation. Gcotechnical considerations that should be taken into account before and throughout the mining operation are emphasized. The importance of closely examining and monitoring highwall conditions for subtle signs of highwall instability will be discussed.

An eastern longwall mine was required to mine through a set of three entries located midway down the length of a panel. Of course, the mine desired to design a successful support system for the mine-through area at the least cost. To further complicate the design process, the mine-through entries were located directly under the end of a previously mined, overlying longwall panel and the entries were close enough to be subject to stress interactions from the overlying seam. In order to accurately evaluate the multiple-seam stresses and modify the mine-through support system appropriately, the boundary element program LaModel was used to model the stress and displacements in the two mines. Using the results of the model's stress analysis, the support density was systematically varied throughout the mine- through entries for optimum sup@ efficiency and economics. During the actual mining of the cross panel entries, the longwall experienced few, if any, additional delays, and overall, the support and mine through of the cross-panel en- tries at Harris #1 was very successful, saving the mine confineable time and money.

This paper presents results of the experiments carried out in Beth Energy No. 33 Mine for the purpose of alleviating problems associated with cutter roof. Cutter roof problems have delayed the advance of the entry development considerably and maintenance cost of these entries was very high due to the requirement of very extensive and heavy artificial supports. The study includes assessment of the problem, investigation of the geology and lithology of the mines, study of in-situ stresses and corrective measures to combat the problem. Two approaches were selected as the corrective measures: 1) implementing yield pillar concept in order to reduce the effects of in-situ horizontal stresses, 2) designing an effective roof reinforcement system and application procedure. Results of this study revealed that roof strata is weak and in-situ stresses are very high at the problem area which results in development of cutter roof. Implementation of yield pillar concept was found to be ineffective because cutter roof often developed at the entry face concurrent to the development. However, proper design and implementation of roof reinforcement system stabilized the roof and eliminated roof caving during both entry development and retreat of longwall face, despite existence of the cutter roof, at a much lower cost.

Reduction in the time required and improvements in safety during a longwall face move have compelled coal mine operators to examine and use pre-driven longwall recovery rooms. While this concept is not without controversy and risk, the rewards can result in substantial reductions in longwall face move/set-up times and provide safer working conditions. Both of these factors can reduce mining costs and enhance profitability in a competitive market. This project was even more complex because the longwall system operates under a weak roof condition. To examine the feasibility of this concept, a 16-ft wide by 170-ft long experimental pre-driven recovery room was designed using analytical, empirical and 3-dimensional finite element modeling techniques. Based on the projected loading conditions, immediate and main roof geological and strength characteristics, a variety of roof bolt types were selected and installed in the recovery room and adjacent chutes. To supplement the intrinsic supports, high-capacity roof-to¬floor cuttable cribs were strategically placed to reduce the potential of a weighting failure before the longwall shields safely entered the room. To evaluate the behavior and final support performance, the recovery room and chutes were instrumented to monitor the physical response during various loading phases. Additionally, the cuttable cribs were instrumented to evaluate the loading and stiffness characteristics during the extraction process. This paper describes the successful design process, support methodology, monitoring results, final observations and recommendations.

Total extraction mining of coal is being undertaken on a small scale by Anglo Coal South Africa. Longwall mining has been done in the group at New Denmark colliery since the 80s and recently the company started experimenting with pillar mining at Goedehoop colliery. Total extraction mining methods result in caving of the overburden strata that is often accompanied by displacement of air causing wind blasts. The windblasts can cause injuries to underground mining personnel, damage to mining equipment, and ventilation disruptions. Some incidents of windblast damage and injuries have been recorded at both New Denmark and Goedehoop Colliery that prompted mine management to experiment with the goaf warning device, an instrument developed by CSIR mining technology to give early warning of impending god. The initial version of the Goafwarn was originally developed to operate as a stand-alone unit, with LED lights mounted on the device that would flash if the unit was triggered'. That set up would be effective in small working areas where the flashing lights are visible to all workers. This requirement is more difficult to satisfy in longwall application of the unit where mining activities are spread over large linear distances of up to 250 m and the flashing lights would not be visible to all workers in the longwall face. It was also found that the single unit had limitations in distinguishing between man made vibrations and cracking in rockmass leading to an unacceptably high incidence of false alarms. The case studies describe the experiments that were carried out to ameliorate the two issues mentioned above through networking more than one unit. This was achieved through the development of radio communication from the warning devices to a central control (Trollex Data Acquisition Unit) from which the alarms are issued once the prescribed triggers are satisfied. The operating system was made up of 4 Goafwarn units installed 30 m apart with 2 in the tailgate and other 2 in the main gate. The alarm state was defined where 3 or more units were triggered simultaneously. The concept was applied successfully in real time during longwall mining, and management procedures have been developed to achieve safety through the system including switching off the shearer, and flicking the lights to warn people.

This paper presents an analysis of ground movements recorded from longwall operations in the Northern Appalachian region in West Virginia. The site chosen for the investigation was selected due to varying heights of overburden and topography and was instrumented for both surface and subsurface measurements. The instrumentation areas consisted of two panels covering various sections with unique geologic and topographic features. Instrumentation included surveying monuments and shallow boreholes using an inclinometer for measuring horizontal strata displacements. Vertical strata deformation was monitored utilizing a unique design of the mechanical grouting method. Full length borehole profile extension was measured using Sondex displacement rings in the inclinometer installation. Subsurface displacements, i. e. caving zone, fractured zone, and highly deformed non-fractured zone were identified. The nature of surface disturbances with respect to varying geologic settings were compared, and an attempt was made to simulate final strata caving and bed separation using finite element analysis.

The behaviour of grouted cable bolts used for rock reinforcement as a means of ground control in hard rock mining is investigated. The study utilizes an analytical model which is based on the variational principle to calculate the shear bond stress distribution along the embedded length of cable bolt. In this paper, a comprehensive parametric study which covers both geometric and mechanical design parameters involved is presented. Special emphasis is placed on studying the characteristics of the grout model represented by Winkler springs. This involved varying the maximum shear strength of the grout, its residual strength and the slip occurring between the cable and the borehole wall.

Good planning is critical to operating a safe and efficient mining operation. As the shallow coal scams become depleted, attention turns toward deeper mineable seams or remnant coal reserves. It is becoming more common to place a mine in a scam that is below or adjacent to existing mine workings. Significant research has been conducted regarding the ground control issues of multiple scam mining. However, safety aspects of the operation may not be fully considered. Safety issues include working below or adjacent to a flooded mine and controlling gas Communication between the active mine and the nearby mine. This paper will discuss the safety issues a mine operator should consider when working under or adjacent to mines that may be flooded with water.

Coal and gas outburst is one of the serious natural disasters in the coal mines of China. Since 1950, more than 10,000 coal or gas outbursts have occurred in more than 200 underground coal mines of different types. The outburst prone coal mines are widely spread out. It occurs in different types of coal -ma and is very serious in some areas. Most outbursts occurred at the time of roadway driving in coal seam, serious outbursts occurred mainly when entering the coal seam during the cross-cut driving; of the outbursts, coal and gas outbursts We UP major proportion, while pressing out and pouring out ah account for a large proportion; outburst. occur under different operating conditions, but mostly occur during shotfiring. This paper introduces the prevention and control measures as practiced in China and illustrates the three types of outburst cla8sification. Both technology and management are equally important in outburst prevention and control. Measurement of the volume of drilling cuttings and the initial gas outflow rate fm- boreholes have proven to be effective. A special team and organization must be set up to deal with the problems.

Researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health installed 39 instrumented, fully grouted bolts at six test sites in a trona mine retreat panel to study mine roof stability for the improvement of workplace safety. Variables at each test site included bolt spacing, bolt length, roof span, and location in the panel layout. At most test sites, two rows of instrumented bolts were installed, one in or near the intersection created during development and the other in or near the intersection created during second-pass mining. The most significant factor affecting bolt load was roof span. The highest loads were on the bolts installed in the intersections of the 6 m-wide entry. Mining-induced stress resulting from panel layout was the next most significant factor affecting bolt loading. Minor varia¬tions in bolt loading could be attributed to changes in bolt spacing and bolt length. Gas pressure release in the immediate roof contributed to some bolts showing compressional loading during gas bleed-off.

The techniques developed should provide a useful tool, not only during the initial formulation of a suitable bolting plan for a new section, but also for periodic check¬ing on the utilization factor of hardware installed in the roof. Indications are that with present practice, utilization seldom exceeds 507.. Retro-fittable bolter equipment now available (FCBS?) allows doubling of the utilization factor in many cases. We are also introducing a computer pro¬gram based on the material outlined in this paper. This program can save a great deal of time in examining the real effect of implementing alternate bolting plans or using different installation techniques. It allows fine-tuning of bolt lengths, spacing and installation tension to mini¬mize roof support cost, while maximizing safe life of the mine opening. We have developed a procedure which allows easy, site-specific quantification of the need for reinforcement of a mine roof. The concept is based on the forma¬tion of a direct link between theory and empirical data to custom-fit each mine section. In its simplest form, the proce¬dure requires only recording of roof bolt torques in a sample working place (16 to 25 bolts) several times during the first week or so after initial bolting. The way in which the torque pattern changes during this time can reveal whether or not the bolts carry enough tension to maintain stability in that specific roof. From the same data, the nature of the anchorage horizon is derived. Specifically, shale or limestone can be distinguished from sandstone. If the procedure is repeated a few times (within the same mine section) with different bolt installation tensions, we can numerically characterize the roof in terms of one single value: an "effective angle of internal friction". This number can then serve to calculate trade-offs in bolting plan design, such as bolt length, bolt spacing and optimum bolt tension. Additional refinement is possible if a sagmeter is installed in the sample work¬ing place being monitored and if bolt anchorage capacity is determined. The lat¬ter can be done automatically on each bolt as it is being installed, using a system we developed and patented. Alternately, a number of pull tests could be performed. Using the sagmeter, bolt torque and anchor¬age data, it is possible to project the safe life of the supported opening. The details of the procedures described apply specifically to tensioned roof bolting, but a brief discussion paints the way for a similar analysis of full-column resin bolting also.

This paper overviews the recent research progress in predicting cutting performance using fracture mechanics principles. It is emphasised that rock fragmentation due to cutting is mainly a process of chip formation resulting from crack initiation and propagation or crack interaction for multi-tool cutting. This process can be simulated by using the well developed fracture mechanics criteria coupled to numerical methods. Fracture toughness is shown to be an important and useful parameter in quantifying cutting performance and in designing cutting tools. The paper concludes with discussions on the dynamic effects involved in rock cutting processes which should be taken into account for optimum cutting efficiency and tool design.

"Current and emerging practices to ventilate longwall gobs are prompting increased design and analysis of standing support requirements related to longwall mining. Specifically, additional design methodologies are being employed to evaluate standing supports in the #2 entry of a 3-entry longwall system.Numerical modeling will be used to evaluate the performance of standing support in the #2 entry between gobs of longwalls in the Herrin No. 6 seam. The performance of standing support in the #2 entry will be evaluated based on the following: (1) The effectiveness of standing support in maintaining an open airway in the #2 entry; (2) The interaction of standing support in the #2 entry with standing support in the longwall tailgate; and (3) Loading conditions of longwall pillars. Initial numerical modeling activities are focused on evaluating the roof to floor convergence in the #2 Entry and using the ground reaction curve concept for support design.Numerical modeling indicates that, like standing support in tailgates, supports in the #2 entry require some type of yield mechanism to withstand initial uncontrolled convergence. Numerical modeling also suggests that support density can be lower than that used in a tailgate support application. The numerical models used for initial investigation of support performance in the #2 entry are limited in their ability to evaluate support performance. The magnitude of uncontrollable convergence can be estimated with LaModel software. Near-seam conditions have not been investigated in this research since the LaModel software does not have the ability to evaluate inelastic rock behavior.IntroductionDuring the past three decades, many researchers have investigated standing support performance in longwall tailgate entries. Very little attention was paid to the middle entry of a threeentry longwall gateroad. As longwalls retreated, no personnel would travel the #2 entry, and the entry was considered part of the longwall gob. In response to recent mine disasters, regulatory agencies and operators have devoted more attention to these entries. Prior to the Upper Big Branch mine disaster, little or no secondary support was applied in these entries. Unlike secondary support in longwall tailgates, there is little empirical knowledge or quantified research specifically applied to secondary support in the #2 entry. This paper outlines initial steps used to develop a design methodology for secondary support in the #2 entry."

Due to ever-increasing stripping ratios associated with the No. 8 Seam at the San Juan Mine surface operation, BHP Minerals decided to implement longwall mining for the extraction of the substantial future reserve base. In preparation for longwall developments, BHP opted to first develop a small-scale pilot operation within the No.8 Seam on an adjacent lease to address geotechnical/geological concerns related to ground control, subsidence, caving, panel and entry design, and operational issues related to entry development and proper face equipment selection. Room-and-pillar mining methods are currently being utilized to develop a full extraction panel for a wide range of geological, geotechnical, and geomechanical evaluations aimed at characterizing and assessing the mineability of the No.8 Seam. Variable roof and floor conditions, coupled with a multi-bench coal seam, require that a number of mining horizons, opening geometries, and roof and rib support fixtures be evaluated relative to expediting gate and panel developments. Issues related to development of timely caves in areas subject to overlying sand channel deposits will also be addressed through underground in-seam stress and deformation measurements, and interburden and surface subsidence monitoring. This information will ultimately be used to evaluate face support and gate and panel pillar/entry development requirements. The current depositional model for the property, developed from an aggressive drilling, highwall mapping, and lineament evaluation program, will also be refined during the Pilot Mine study through extensive in-trine mapping, additional roof and floor drilling and physical property testing, and determination of the in situ principal horizontal stress field.

Part of the ground control research at the U.S. Bureau of Mines is involved with improving ground control data collection and analysis methods. A geographic information system (GIs) is being used within this research effort to standardize the data collected and provide a common graphical and tabular format and analysis system for researchers to access information on underground coal mines. In addition, GIS's can perform relational analyses on multiple map and tabular data sets which are not possible through map-creation or CAD packages or through data bases alone. In addition to standardizing ground control analyses, there is an increasing need for rapid analysis of ground control data in connection with increasing production rates at longwall mines. The examination of a large number of interrelated parameters and their impact on short-term mine safety and productivity under the time constraints imposed by rapid production requires computer-aided techniques. A GIs provides the means to quickly, quantitatively, and reproducibly evaluate mine-wide conditions. This overview of GI8 techniques for mine data integration and analysis, using a mine in Colorado as an example site, will cover the input of data into a GIs, including mine-wide monitoring system data and general data such as roof control plans and geology. The methods to geographically reference these data sets and retrieve and combine them also will be covered. Automation of such processes briefly will be reviewed to allow future users to automate their mine data analyses.

Strong roof helps minimize roof fall problems in coal mine entries. However, the Inability of strong roof to cave readily may contribute to major ground control problems In Iongwall and retreat mining operations. The concern expressed by mine operators prompted this Bureau of Mines study to analyze the effects of strong roof members on ground stability around Iongwall openings. The problem was approached from three directions: development of a theory to analyze the strain energy conditions In the coal and surrounding strata, modeling the effects of different thicknesses and strengths of Coal and roof strata, and field Instrumentation of powered supports In two Iongwall mines. Results from the theoretical and modeling analysis confirm the accepted belief that a strong roof does, In fact, play a major role in high stress concentration problems In and around the Iongwall panel. Analysis of the effect of different roof overhang dimensions and properties on relative strain energy buildup In the coal and roof Is presented. Shield pressure data Indicate possible methods for detecting noncaving roof behind the shields. Strategies to monitor roof overhang and control dangerous conditions caused by the noncaving roof are also presented.

This paper proposes an unconventional, simple, and practical method of measuring mining-induced around stresses with hydraulic borehole pressure cells. The method is a direct ground stress measuring technique. It does not require the value of deformation modulus for back-calculation of stresses; instead, it directly measures the ground stress in situ. The applicability and practicality of the technique are shown by two case studies. The technique may be applied to monitoring a stress build-up that may lead to mine roof failure or to rock and coal outbursts.

Gob pressure measurements were made in a Western U. S. coal mine as part of a long-term program to evaluate cave progress and to determine the influence of geological discontinuities on caving conditions, load transfer, and resulting instabilities. Gloetzl cells were selected for the measurements due to their simple, robust construction and a history of being able to monitor pressures in a broken medium. A methodology was developed for the successful installation and protection of the cells and hydraulic lines in the gob as the face retreated. The measurement indicated a cave progress controlled by the frequency of, major faults. The pressure-mining progress profile was compared to those observed in other parts of the world. It was concluded that the significant differences in profiles was caused by the thick-bedded strata, the existence of high lateral stresses and the spacing between faults. Recommendations are given for future applications of Gloetzl cells for gob pressure measurements.

Coal resource extraction reaches higher depth of overburden and rockbursts as well as associated seismic events appear to become an additional problem to he addressed by ground control engineers. For example, German coal mines approach a depth of overburden of some 1400 m (4200 ft). Certain strata at those depths and associated high stresses may react upon resource extraction and subsequent deformation by violent release of strain energy, termed rodcbursts. Rock mechanics tests on numerous rock types have been conducted and three types of brittle rock behavior were classified. This paper describes different types of rock behavior in uniaxial compression and discusses a possible classification of rock with respect to their likelihood of violent response upon loading.

Methods of rock reinforcement in Australian coal mines are being advanced progressively through the better understanding of rock failure mechanisms around roadways and the-development of improved bolting hardware and installation techniques. It has been recognised that to improve the performance of rock reinforcement systems, the stiffness of the system as a whole has to be improved. New style bolts and accessories together with high pre-tensioned roof and cable bolts are being developed as a result. A number of the new techniques used to stabilise the roof, especially in weak roof/high horizontal stress areas have been site proven and are now currently used on a routine basis as a means of improving development rates and gate road stability during longwall retreat.
