Seismic repeaters are commonly observed in natural fault zones dominated by slow aseismic motion. The corresponding seismic signal, characterized by highly similar wave forms, is usually interpreted as the repeating ruptures of locked asperities on fault planes (“patches of higher roughness”), loaded by a-seismically slipping areas (“creeping areas”) (Chen & Lapusta 2009; Bourouis & Bernard 2007). Only very few occurrences of seismic repeaters have been reported in underground mines, where these phenomena are rather unexpected since the stress state and the seismic wave propagation continuously evolve with the advancing excavation front (Kinscher et al., 2020). A recent study based on a local seismic network installed in the underground mine of Garpenberg, Sweden, has shown that seismic repeaters and multiplets represent the main part of the total released seismic energy (magnitude of seismic events: -2 < M <1, on moment magnitude scale), with some seismic families being active during several months to years. It is suggested that repeaters are linked to aseismic slip on pre-existing talc-filled fractures, induced by the excavation, and loading of asperities. These results imply that part of redistribution of stresses in the mine is due to aseismic slip, which might explain the observed distant and delayed seismicity.

As you are all well aware, the minerals processing industry and process industries in general are now heavily involved in reassessing their process flowsheets. The topic of concern is the little arrow in one corner of the drawing at the end of the process flow that usually says "to waste." A really startling statement might have said "to waste disposal area," which implied that there was some concern, thought, or measures taken to deal with the waste. Since 1965, the year of the Water Quality Act, many laws have been passed and agencies formed dealing with the multi-faceted area of pollution. One of these laws, the Air Quality Control Act of 1967, was the initiating force in the development of Calcilox additive to help solve the problem of sludge disposal resulting from the scrubbing of SO2 bearing gases. The intent of this paper is to focus in with a wide-angle view on a particular type of waste stream, generally an aqueous, inorganic slurry, and present the reader with an alternate approach to their disposal via Calcilox additive stabilization. Each waste stream is unique and will require different techniques to meet the design objectives. Calcilox additive is not intended to be a panacea for every slurry disposal problem, but, rather a viable alternative that should be investigated before a final waste disposal approach is chosen. This paper will summarize the development of Calcilox additive; briefly discuss stabilization; and most importantly, discuss some applications to develop a feeling for Calcilox additive stabilization. Actual dollar costs will not be presented, for each waste stream differs and the ultimate disposal mode chosen greatly influences the costs.

The model&apos;s input consists of raw coal size and washability analysis, operating cost data, and raw coal and clean costs. The model&apos;s output predicts yields, qualities, costs and profitability for an individual coal.

Coal in most refuse ponds including those owned by Consolidation Coal Company can be recovered by froth flotation techniques. Laboratory studies show that the flotation conditions required for coal recovery varied greatly from pond to pond. The variables found to be most important for high coal recovery and low product ash were: a) the amount and type of flotation reagents and b) the degree of conditioning before flotation. Coal recovery at a rate of 0.504 kg/s (2 tons/hr) was demonstrated at a pond site employing a mobile froth flotation unit.

Polysaccharides have been widely used as depressants in mineral processing for decades. They constituent one of the most abundant family of biopolymers. However, only a small number of them have been used by industry so far because of a general lack of understanding of interactions between these polymers and minerals. In this work, adsorption tests, electrophoretic mobility measurements, microflotation and fluorescence spectroscopic tests were performed along with computer simulation to explore the mechanistic aspects of guar gum adsorption and conformation on talc as a function of relevant variables such as ionic strength, pH, solvent composition and polymer molecular weight. From microflotation tests, it was found that talc hydrophobicity decreased markedly due to the adsorption of guar gum even at very low concentrations and reached a plateau below moximum adsorption. Guar gum adsorption on talc was found to be not affected significantly by changes in solution conditions such as pH and ionic strength, ruling out electrostatic force as controlling factor for adsorption. Fluorescence spectroscopic studies showed no evidence of the formation of hydrophobic domains at talc-aqueous interface. Also urea, a hydrogen bond breaker, reduced the adsorption of guar on talc. All of the above results suggest that one of the main driving forces for guar adsorption on talc is hydrogen bonding in preference to electrostatic or hydrophobic force. This information should help toward designing reagents of optimum molecular architecture for efficient depression, dispersion or other such surface modification of particles.

Mining-related wastes, which are increasing, are being utilized more and more as valuable resources in Virginia. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) divides mining-related wastes into two categories: those generated from mineral extraction and beneficiation and those generated from mineral processing. Materials from both categories are produced in Virginia, where waste (by-product) materials are present at a variety of mining sites and processing plants; some of which have been exploited for various uses in the past and/or present. These materials include: used concrete recycled for roadbase material; pyrite coated with magnetite for use in portland cement; minor amounts of fly ash for use in concrete block, lightweight aggregate, and flowable structural fills; granite and diabase quarry fines for use as agricultural and asphalt filler; lime kiln dust for use in neutralizing and stabilizing coal refuse; soapstone aggregate for use in terrazzo heat retention panels; kaolin for use as a filler product and as an ingredient in white cement; slate quarry fines used as landcover and combined with aggregate for crusher run and as a filler in asphalt; and coal refuse for use as fuel in a lightweight aggregate plant. There are some materials available that have never been utilized, although several ideas were investigated to turn them into usable commodities. One such material is a high-alumina scrap produced as a by-product at a ferrovanadium processing plant. However, large quantities of waste materials from metal mining, industrial mineral, and fossil fuel operations remain to be disposed of in an environmentally safe and economic manner. In 1989, almost one million tons of fly ash were produced from burning of coal at eight coal-fired power plants in Virginia. Present uses for this waste such as an ingredient in concrete block, concrete aggregate, and in structural fills cannot dispose of all the available material; however, increased use of fly ash as a soil/rock substitute for structural fills and embankments may solve the problem of its disposal. Another waste material is calcium carbonate precipitate paste produced at a lithium carbonate processing plant and presently being used for back filling an on-site inactive underground limestone mine. Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastes in the form of CaS04 will probably increase threefold. If this material contains a minimum of 95 percent gypsum and negligible chloride, it may have a value to a wallboard manufacturer as we move toward the year 2000. Thought must be given how this increasing waste can be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner.

Introduction This is an exciting day. It isn&apos;t often that you can find the best minds in a particular business gathered together in one place. But that is what we have here. You are the best and the brightest people there are in the business of gold mining. What we discuss at this conference confirms the major issues facing us and sets out the issues governing how our mines and mining companies will be run in the next few years. In looking over the list of papers to be given, I have noticed something. It is something that I have noticed at almost every mining convention I have ever attended. Almost every paper at this conference concerns itself with the technical side of mining. Most of us in this roan are professionals; we are either engineers, geologists, accountants or representatives of some other profession. In getting where we are today, we have had to work hard to acquire the technical skills needed for our individual professions. We are all proud of our knowledge and work hard to claim the right to be considered an expert in a particular technical field or subject area.

INTRODUCTION Today more tunnels are being bored by mechanical means in igneuus and metemorphic rocks (i.e. "hard" rocks) than ever before, and there is reason to believe that this trend will continue in the future. Because of this, there is an increasing demand fur stronger, more powerful machines and fur cutters that are capable of handling the high loads and abrasive rock conditions that often accompany hard rock tunneling. Tunnel boring machines ("TM&apos;s") built today, therefure, generally have higher thrust and torque capabilities than those built in the past, and they are equipped with the largest cutters and rings now available. The recent experience in hard rock tunneling has demunstrated that TBMs can be both efficient and ecunumical under such conditions, and that acceptable performance rates can be achieved in all but the hardest rock. In spite of this success, it is believed that improvements in buth the cost of boring and in performance rates can still be made through mudificatiuns in the existing kerf cutting system. Some impruvements in TBM performance under hard rock conditions, fur example, have already been made thruugh the development of constant section rings that maintain a constant edge width and, therefore, a constant level of performance as they wear. The recent experience in hard rock tunneling has also produced a wealth of new TBM performance data through the systematic study

Project scheduling is a deterministic technique utilizing single estimates of activity durations. In reality, activity durations are stochastic and can be better represented by probability distributions. This paper describes the development and utilization of a project scheduling simulation which combines analytical scheduling with stochastic activity durations. The purpose is to provide a method to analyze the sequencing of mining production processes and predict the effect of any planned changes. The simulation is demonstrated through realistic examples, such as longwall face-to-face transfer sequencing and the effect of varying advance rates on longwall development sections. Statistical data, to make more informed production decisions, are generated in the form of project activity/path criticality and project duration distributions.

[show of hands] A considerable number-more than about half the room. Of those plans, how many of them do you consider as meeting your needs and being successful? [show of hands, far fewer, general audience laughter] You have all at least heard the word "gainsharing." Some of you undoubtedly aren&apos;t quite sure what gainsharing is, while others obviously have gainsharing plans in place and are looking for ways to improve them. In the short time I have now I&apos;ll be able to give you a precursory look at gainsharing and some brief ideas on where to look to improve your current plans. The stability problems of back- filled spoil banks became more important since the Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 was enacted. The material properties of spoil banks were categorized as the first part of the study and spoil slope stability was evaluated using computer programs as a second part. Emphasis was placed on the effects of natural barriers, which is required in the federal law.

With the end of active copper mining in 1983, the extensive underground mine workings and the Berkeley Pit, one of the largest open-pit mines in the United States, began to flood. Daily in- flow to the pit is about five million gallons per day, with the water level rising at a rate of 30 feet per year. To support the remedial investigation and feasibility study, a six-layer, three-dimensional MODFLOW-based ground water flow model was constructed to simulate the 9,100-acre site. The vertical domain of the model extended over 1,060 feet of elevation difference and consisted of a finite difference grid of 89 rows by 54 columns. All work was PC- based. Model boundaries were assigned to correspond to natural hydrologic features such as geologic contacts, faults, and surface water features. The fully calibrated model was approved by the State of Montana and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in the site remediation. The computer model was used to determine ground water flow velocities and contaminant travel times within the alluvial sediments adjacent to the Berkeley Pit. The purpose of the model was to predict future alluvial ground water flow directions should acid- and heavy metal-laden flood waters filling the Berkeley Pit rise up and enter the Alluvial Aquifer.

INTRODUCTION The mining industry has been under- going a significant restructuring for the past several years. Some firms have been liquidated. Some have been merged with other firms. A number of mining divisions of larger firms have been spun off, in some cases in leveraged buyouts by management. Recently, there have been a number of spin outs of gold subsidiaries. There are also a number of start-up situations where new firms are emerging as significant gold producers through mine development or acquisition. This restructuring has created an attractive market for specialized mining finance firms, and a number of firms have recently entered that field in the United States. These firms provide financial advisory and valuation services to mining firms and project developers, and access to venture capital. In some cases, they invest for clients or for their own account. I have been asked to describe how our firm works, and what kind of information we expect to receive when mine developers seek our assistance in financing a project. HOW WE OPERATE Denver Mining Finance works for both mine developers and investors. We also provide expert advice on mining issues to governments and to firms who are in litigation over mining issues. A lot of our work involves valuing mineral interests for various purposes. Our principal expertise is in the technical, commercial, and financial area. We help put mining deals into shape commercially so that they can be financed, and we help investors get into mining deals that are commercially sound. We work on projects, but we also advise mining firms on the structure of their business and how to make the most out of one or several mines that they might own. In addition to our work for clients, we are also prepared to invest in mining projects for our own account, and to recommend gold properties for acquisition by our parent company, Royal Gold, Inc. We are, to some extent, a venture capital firm, in that we sometimes work with projects that are not "bankablerV1 and are prepared to invest in attractive early-stage situations in mining. However, I want to emphasize that our principal focus is on development of commercially attractive mining projects that can be brought into production in the best possible financial terms. If we can make a project qualify for a project loan from a commercial bank, we will not advise the developer to use high cost venture capital. For the purpose of this paper, I will focus primarily upon our functions with respect to development of precious metal projects. In a typical case, a firm with an advanced-staged project approaches us for help with financing the final feasibility study, and construction and operation of a mine. In some cases, the developer has already developed a financing plan and wants only our access to investors. If we agree that the project is sound and that the financing scheme will be attractive to investors, we will help the developer reach investors on a commission basis. In such cases, we are particularly insistent that the financing plan and our participation meet all regulatory requirements, particularly compliance with state and federal securities laws. In most cases, however, the developer asks us for advise both on how to structure the financing, and how it can be implemented. Here we work for fees based on hourly rates for advisory work,

Ion exchange resin processes are receiving renewed attention in the mining industry for recovery;, of metals from solution. This interest has been inspired by the development of continuous countercurrent ion; exchange systems (CCIX) which are of much lower cost than the original, fixed bed contactor processes. With the countercurrent systems and new developments to process or upgrade the eluate product, ion exchange can now compete successfully with solvent extraction for treatment of uranium ores. The low concentration of U308 obtained in the CCIX strong eluate is generally upgraded by solvent extraction methods in sulfuric acid systems. Resin loadings of up to 120 grams per liter of U308, however, have been produced experimentally by recycling of eluate (HIM-IX process) and further developments may be expected in the near future. New developments in resin technology are bringing forth products of greater strength, loading capacity, selectivity and density. Densities up, to 1.35 spgr have been claimed by some suppliers. The process is not a new one and has taken years to advance to the present state of development. The earliest system to gain widespread acceptance was the resin-in-pulp system applied to uranium recovery. Ion exchange, however, later lost acceptance in favor of solvent extraction in the 1960&apos;s due to problems in resin degradation, resin contamination and resin-pulp separation, in addition to the development of improved solvent extraction reagents and techniques. The resin-in-pulp system continues to have application on high clay ores and has advanced in design. A number of other continuous ion exchange systems were also tried but never gained continued acceptance. In the current resurgence period the CCIX systems to gain acceptance were the Utah and Chem-Sep (Higgins Loop) systems. These processes are relatively simple in concept although require sophisticated controls. Fixed bed columns have also been designed into multistage systems in countercurrent operation but are not discussed in this paper. These systems remain competitive today for many applications. The most recent advancements however have been in the multistage contactors from,, which three are in current acceptance. These are the Himsley, Porter, and NIM systems. All industrial applications of these systems are relatively new, although pilot plant and in-plant development has been in progress over the last decade. Fur36ther developments should be expected in the near future.

The MPTM was first applied in the U.S.A. in 1950 as described by Lewis, W.E., 1951. The method was then abandoned in the USA and rediscovered some 20 years later in France where it was greatly improved and widened in its scope of application. It was subsequently successfully introduced to Italy and Spain. The technique, at its present stage of development, provides solutions to tunneling in soil and in the softer rock types, which often were troublesome geological environments for tunneling. When used in conjunction with drilling-and-blasting, over break, excessive vibration, noise and fissuring of the rock can all be avoided. When used as an alternative to the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), the MPTM provides safe, full face tunneling in stead of multiple headings, excavated sequentially; in addition, surface settlement can be virtually eliminated. When used as an alternative to a TBM, the method&apos;s flexibility and low capital cost make it attractive. This attractiveness is enhanced when ground conditions are erratic or when the length of tunnel to be excavated is limited. The method holds promise for tunnels of large cross section, to be excavated in soft ground or rock with unconfined compressive strengths of less than 80 MPa (11 600 psi). While in itself not new, recognition and development of the method&apos;s potential are. Further development work, aimed at increasing the range over which the MPTM can be applied, is in progress.

At a time when the US mining industry is struggling to emerge from a lengthy recession, the burden of new, unnecessary regulations could shorten the life of, or be fatal to many domestic mining companies. The possibility of new restrictions on the use of diesel equipment operating in underground mines is one example of unnecessary regulations. These could cause serious harm to the economic health of many mining companies. Whether future health-related Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations restricting the use of diesel equipment are unnecessary, depends on whether these restrictions are supported by fact or created in a political environment. The mining industry has benefited from the use of diesel equipment in underground metal-non-metal and coal mines for more than 50 years. Since first introduce to underground mines in the early 1940s, the use of diesel equipment has grown in numbers and size. During this time, the mining industry in America has achieved much higher productivity rates and improved safety. Although all these gains cannot be attributed to the greater use of diesel equipment, a high percentage can be. I began my professional mining ca¬reer in 1970 working in the Missouri lead mines. At that time, the use of diesel equipment was well established in metal-non-metal mines throughout the United States and many parts of the world. As director of mining research for St. Joe Minerals Corp. (now The Doe Run Co.), I was involved in research to improve mining productivity and safety. This involved investigating the better and safer use of existing or new mining methods, products, equipment and people. Within this group, diesel equipment had the single largest positive impact.

Success has been achieved in developing mathematical models of rod mills, ball mills and recently to a limited extent autogenous grinding mills. There is also considerable activity in the development of mathematical models of various mineral concentration opera¬tions, such as flotation, magnetic separation and electrostatic concentration. However, at present there is a technological gap which hinders the integration of both size reduction and mineral concentration models into an overall process simulation model. This gap exists because size reduction models have been aimed at describing the size of the product and have not dealt with the equally important problem of identifying the product composition in each size fraction. Without this information the concentration model is ineffective. This situation is especially critical in the simulation of the magnetite-taconite beneficiation process, where a portion of the ore is rejected from the process following each stage of size reduction. Consideration has therefore been given to the merging of a size reduction model and a mineral liberation model to permit prediction of mineral composition as a function of size. The results of this integration of size reduction and mineral liberation models are discussed from both theoretical and practical viewpoints using batch grinding data for a magnetite iron formation sample as a demonstration vehicle.

Several wall rock porphyry or pyrometascmatic copper deposits occur within the metamorphosed Paleozoic formations along the northern and eastern flanks of the Little Dragoon Mountains. Rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to Recent occur in the area. The Tertiary age Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite intruded the sedimentary section in the eastern half of the range metamorphosing the Paleozoic carbonate units to tactites composed of garnet, diopside, and tremolite. Copper, zinc, and molybdenum minerals deposited in sites which are structurally controlled and stratigraphically favorable. Because the deposits are covered by alluvium, the information on structure, alteration, and mineralization is based upon a study of the diamond drilling programs. The mineralized district can be divided into four areas: 1) The Johnson Camp copper-zinc deposits; 2) The Dragoon copper deposit; 3) The I-10 copper-molybdenum deposit; 4) The Strong & Harris copper-zinc deposit. On the southwest end of the range beneath alluvial cover, the Cretaceous Bisbee Group was thrust over Precambrian and Paleozoic formations. The Tertiary Texas Canyon Quartz Monzonite intruded and metamorphosed them. In the upper plate, the Cretaceous sediments near the intrusive were metamorphosed to metaquartzite and andalusite and sillimanite schists. In the lower plate the Martin and Horquilla formations were marbleized. The lower Abrigo was metamorphosed to epidote rich calc-silicate tactites and biotite hornfels. A composite geologic cross section, based upon diamond drilling,, through the Dragoon copper deposit is shown in Fig. 1. The geologic events which formed this deposit are: 1. A faulted section of Precambrian Pioneer formation and diabase and Cambrian Bolsa and Abrigo formations was thrust over Pennsylvanian Horquilla formation. Three lithotypes of Phalen coal from Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia, Canada, were subjected to a modified Hardgrove grindability index (HGI) test. The testing scheme differed from conventional (ASTM D-409) Hardgrove testing by, in one case, repeating the test three times prior to removing the -200-mesh fine coal from the Hardgrove mill, and, in a second test, removing fines after each of three successive Hardgrove tests. Only the first stage of the latter testing scheme actually conforms to the standard HGI test. All processed samples were analyzed petrographically by a combined maceral/microlithotype analysis. The increase in the percentage of coal ground to -200 mesh increases through the 60- to 180-mesh fractions for each of the lithotypes for the following two apparent reasons. First, with progressive grinding, more of the oversize material is close to 200 mesh (75 µm), creating a "pool" of particles ready to be ground to -200 mesh, and, second, the removal of fines from the system at each step eases the grinding at the successive step. The fines retained system shows the influence of buffering of further grinding by the particles retained in the grinding mill. The Phalen lithotypes and the series of Central Appalachian coals, evaluated previously by Hower and Wild (1994), differ in that an increase in vitrite and a decrease in trimacerite is observed in successive -200-mesh fractions in two of the Phalen lithotypes. This is the opposite of the trend observed in the slightly lower-rank Central Appalachian coals.

Anyone who scans the modern literature will realize that concepts of leadership have changed during the past few years. And like change in so many areas of our culture, change has been rapid in the perception of leadership. Many traditional leadership traits are still highly regarded and many of the longstanding personal qualities that improve leadership abilities continue to be effective. In the past, though, leaders could rely on dominance, intimidation and fear to accomplish their goals through the actions of others. In contrast, effective leaders today build relationships, provide vision and guidance, and strive for communication, cooperation, trust and employee satisfaction. Earnest leadership involves moral issues like honesty, integrity, fairness, empathy and respect. Modern leaders guide, facilitate and coach, rather than command and direct. But how well equipped are managers in the mining industry to meet the leadership challenges that lie ahead? More importantly, is he or she becoming a better leader? This article outlines steps to becoming a more effective leader. Management consultants stress that the changes that lie ahead will demand swift organizational adjustments and managers who are equipped to lead during times of change (Boyett and Conn, 1991; Hesselbein et al., 1996; White et al., 1996 and Kotter, 1997). Becoming a better leader begins with self-assessment and a commitment to unify all who depend on one&apos;s leadership abilities. Simply defined, leadership is leading others. Contrary to common practice, leadership is not about advancing one&apos;s own career but about bringing out the best in others. The beauty of modern leadership, however, is that the path of serving others creates synergies. They benefit everyone, including the leader, those the leader manages, upper management and company shareholders.
