"Three types of respiratory apparatus namely, gas masks, hose masks, and self-contained oxygen-breathing apparatus - are now commonly used for protection from noxious gases, vapors, and smokes or ristes, but no particular type can be selected as best for all conditions. Many factors must be considered in connection with each situation, so that each must be considered as a problem in itself. Following are concise statements for comparing the types:Gas masks are the simplest and easiest to wear, also the least cumber-sore; but they protect only in comparatively low concentrations of noxious gases and should never be used where the air contains less than 16 per cent of oxygen. Special masks give protection from one gas or class of gases, but may give no protection against another gas or class of gases.Hose masks protect in any irrespirable atmosphere, but are somewhat cumbersome, the length of hose limiting the distance a wearer may go from fresh air. They are serviceable also where a supply of pure air moves with the wearer, as where a locomotive engineer in a smoky tunnel is using a hose mask supplied with air from the compressed air line of the locomotive. Hose masks consume no chemicals or materials and so are not limited in the time they may be used.Self-contained oxygen-breathing apparatus protect in any irrespirable atmosphere, but their weight is cumbersome, they can be used only by trained men, and frequent attention must be given them to maintain good working condition. On the other band they are the only safe means for exploring mines and other places filled with irrespirable gases in high concentrations."

"INTRODUCTION Among the hazards that may attend the use of Diesel engines in mines, tunnels, or other underground operations the presence of harmful or objectionable constituents in the exhaust gas must receive due consideration to prevent the formation of unsafe or unhealthful working environments in these places. Previous reports of this series have presented discussions of the composition of exhaust gas from engines in proper mechanical condition, 6/ the effect of adding some of the exhaust gas to the intake air of the engine, 7/ the effect of operation in atmospheres containing natural gas, 8/ and the effect on exhaust-gas composition of conditions that influence the characteristics of fuel injection in Diesel engines. In all these studies the properties of the fuels used were in general conformity with specifications usually recommended by the manufacturers of Diesel engines. In evaluating the physiological significance of the various components of the exhaust in these experiments, the toxic or objectionable gases determined were carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, and aldehydes. Because of the low sulfur content of' these fuels, compounds such as sulfur dioxide and sulfur trioxide were not determined, although in discussion of the test results attention was directed to the fact that if fuels of higher sulfur content were used, the concentration of such compounds in the exhaust would become a significant factor in establishing the quantity of ventilating air required to furnish satisfactory dilut1on of the exhaust gas in underground working places."

Determine whether the total delay time in blasting may be safely increased beyond the currently permitted 0.5 s, without igniting a methane or methane-coal dust atmosphere and determine the minimum borehole spacing to avoid misfires. Approach At present, regulations limit the delay time used in short-delay blasting to a total of 0.5 s. Many in industry and government would like to see this total delay time increased to 1 5 to permit an increase in the number of different delays available for short delay blasting and an increase in the time between delay periods. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine whether the total elapsed delay time for blasting coal in underground mines could be safely expanded, with resulting improvements in productivity. The research was conducted at a surface mine in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Experimental shots were conducted in several pits, each of which had a 5-foot-high coal seam (Pitts-burg No.8) in a 50-foot highwall. The coal seam and a mobile gallery provided a good simulation of an underground coal face. The Bureau also examined the relationship between borehole spacing and misfires, to check on reports over the past few years that permissible explosives frequently misfire. These reports were not well documented, but were numerous enough to warrant investigation. Misfires of permissible explosives in an underground coal mine can be very hazardous; a burning cartridge of explosive may be ejected from a borehole and ignite the gas or dust in the mine, or a misfired cartridge in the muck pile may detonate during drilling and mucking operations, causing serious injuries.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted research to improve the ventilation of large-opening mines whose entries are at least 93m2 (1,000 ft2). The ventilation of large-opening mines is unique compared to other types of mines because (1) it is challenging to keep airflow velocities high enough to effectively remove or dilute airborne contaminants because the entries are so large, (2) large air volumes can be moved through the mines with little static pressure drop, and (3) stoppings that are used to direct ventilation airflows are costly to construct and to maintain. The research results suggest that the ventilation of large-opening mines is improved significantly by incorporating ventilation planning into the mine planning process, using propeller fans to direct airflow, developing new stopping materials and construction methods, and using long pillars to eliminate crosscuts where possible.

Objective To develop and evaluate the effectiveness of safety training tools specific to underground metal/nonmetal mining. Background In a series of stakeholder meetings held in the western United States beginning in 1998, participants identified a critical lack of appropriate training materials applicable to metal/nonmetal mining. Participants in the meetings provided many insights into what types of training materials are most effective in dealing with both experienced and inexperienced miners. Most important was that the materials should be realistic and interesting and that some way should be found to capture the wisdom and expertise of older miners before they retired. In response, training videos that focus on safe practices during the mining cycle are being produced. Two videos one on handling explosives underground and one on identifying roof hazards and proper scaling techniques were completed during1999, and a third video is now available. This video, entitled “Ground Support...It’s Important, or Miner Mike Saves the Day,” presents information on why ground supports work and how to install them properly. Approach The new video, “Ground Support…It’s Important,” presents a scenario in which two young miners make a bad decision to leave some supports out in order to catch up in their mining cycle. An expert miner, “Miner Mike,” sees this potentially disastrous situation and educates the young miners about what could happen if they continued to leave supports out. He introduces the young miners to several expert miners, who explain how to install different types of supports correctly, as well as share what experience has taught them over the years. How It Works All footage was taken in operating, underground mines, using14 experts to provide the teaching. Because of the wide variety of supports used underground, it was necessary to focus on those types more common to hard-rock mining. While more complex support systems, such as shotcrete and cable bolts, are mentioned, detailed material is not included. In the course of educating young miners Jeff and Jason, Miner Mike provides information on— •Why supports are necessary in underground mines. •The main types of supports commonly used in underground hard-rock mines. •How supports work. •How holes for bolts are drilled correctly using jacklegs, drill jumbos, and bolting jumbos.• How wire mesh, wire panels, metal mats, and different types of bolts, including mechanical bolts, friction bolts, grouted bolts, and cable bolts, are installed properly. •How to recognize that supports have failed and what to do about it.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have developed a miniature data acquisition system (MIDAS) that can measure resistance changes and temperature, store data for later retrieval, and illuminate LED lights. This instrument can be used with strain-gaged bolts, cable bolts, CSIRO stress-measuring gages, string pots, and any other instrument that uses single-ended, resistance-type gages. MIDAS has the capability to measure up to 16 gages at preset time intervals and store more than 2000 scans, yet is small enough to fit in a 35-mm hole. Because the MIDAS consumes little power, a 9-V alkaline battery will operate the system for 6 months. Data from the MIDAS can be sent to a PC via an RS232/RS485/IRdA port. A software program was written to set operation parameters, graph data, and store all information directly to a spreadsheet. Three LED lights change from green to yellow then red based on reading levels and/or rates of change. This feature can be used with different types of gages to warn miners of possible rock instabilities. The MIDAS has received MSHA experimental permissibility approval and is currently being tested at several mines.

Experiments were conducted to determine the optical scattering properties of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and various combustion aerosols from both flaming and smoldering combustion sources at discrete angles of 151 and 301 in the forward direction and at a light source wave length of 635 nm using a simple light scattering module. In addition to the scattering data, simultaneous measurements were made of the total aerosol mass concentration; light extinction at an average wave length of 546nm; and the response of a common bipolar ion chamber typical of residential smoke detectors modified to allow the aerosols to flow through the chamber. The results of these experiments indicate, for DPM and combustion aerosols, the intensities per unit mass concentration depend not only upon whether the aerosolis DPM or combustion aerosol but also upon the type of combustion aerosol. The results also indicate that the ion chamber responses are greatest for DPM, followed by the response to flaming combustion aerosols (FCA)and lowest for smoldering combustion aerosols (SCA). For light scattering, the greatest intensities are found for SCA, followed by the intensities from FCA, and lowest for DPM. This report describes the experiments, their results, and the use of these results to developed sign criteria for early warning fire sensor capable of the rapid and reliable detection of fires in atmospheres that may or may not be contaminated by the products produced from diesel engines. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Lower the respirable dust exposure of longwall shearer operators by use of a modified head to tail cutting sequence. Approach Modify the cutting sequence of double-drum shearer operations cutting unidirectionally head to tail, so that the tailgate drum is used to mine the entire coal face except when cutting out at the head. This approach would place the primary dust generating source, the cutting action of the drum, on the return air side of both shearer operators. How It Works Currently, 75% of the double-drum shearers in operation employ a unidirectional cutting sequence. On half of these operations, the primary cut is taken as the shearer travels from the headgate to tailgate ends of the face, with roof support to be advanced on the intake air side of the shearer. Typically, the leading (tailgate) drum is taking a full cut during the head to tail pass and the trailing (headgate) drum is cutting bottom coal. In this mode of operation, the dust generated by the trailing (headgate) drum can spread out into the walkway, and increase the respirable dust exposure of both head and taildrum operators. As an alternative, if the trailing drum is "free wheeling" or cutting minimal coal during the head to tail cut, and bottom coal taken by the tailgate drum during the tail to head clean-up pass, both operators are able to work on the intake air side of the primary dust generating source (drum) except when cutting out at the head. This modified cutting sequence would save wear on the conveyor and help to eliminate overloads, as well as reduce the respirable dust exposure of both shearer operators. This modifcation is only applicable to long-wail operations currently cutting unidirectional head to tail, and to those operations where this unidirectional cut would not produce operating constraints.

This report (An Introduction to Safety) is the first in a nine-part series of recommendations addressing the functional safety of processor-controlled mining equipment. It is part of a risk-based system safety process encompassing hardware, software, humans, and the operating environment for the equipment's life cycle. Figure 1 shows a safety framework containing these recommendations. The reports in this series address the various life cycle stages of inception, design, approval and certification, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning. These recommendations were developed as a joint project between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. They are intended for use by mining companies, original equipment manufacturers, and aftermarket suppliers to these mining companies. Users of these reports are expected to consider the set in total during the design cycle. • 1.0 Safety Introduction.—This is an introductory report for the general mining industry. It provides basic system/software safety concepts, discusses the need for mining to address the functional safety of programmable electronics, and includes the benefits of implementing a system/software safety program. • 2.1 System Safety and 2.2 Software Safety.—These reports draw heavily from International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard 61508 and other recognized standards. The scope is "surface and underground safety mining systems employing embedded, networked, and non-networked programmable electronics." System safety seeks to design safety into all phases of the entire system. Software is a subsystem; thus, software safety is a part of the system's safety. • 3.0 Safety File.—This report contains the documentation that demonstrates the level of safety built into the system and identifies limitations for the system’s use and operation. In essence, it is a "proof of safety" that the system and its operation meets the appropriate level of safety for the intended application. It starts from the beginning of the design, is maintained during the full life cycle of the system, and provides administrative support for the safety program of the full system. [ ]

As a part of the work which the Bureau of Mines carried out in 1916 and 1917 pertaining to the compressibility of natural gas , it became necessary to de termine the pressure -volume relations of several of the paraffin hydrocarbons of which natural gas is composed . Results of the work on natural gas were published in Technical papers 131 (Burrell , G.A. , and Robertson , I.W. , The compressibility of natural gas to high pressure , Bureau of Mines Tech . Paper 131 , 1916 , 12 pp. ) and 158 (Burrell , G.A. , and Robertson , I.W. , Compressibility of natural gas and its constituents with analyses of natural gas from 31 cities in the United States , Bureau of Mines Tech . Paper 158 , 1917 , 12 pp . ) , and curves were given of pressure volume deviations of the gases , methane , ethane , propane , and carbon dioxide at high pressures . original experimental data on these gases , however , were not published . The In view of many inquiries which the Bureau has received with reference to the original data on the se gases , and the importance of the pressure -volume relations from which it is possible to calculate the deviation of any natural gas who se composition is known , the original data as determined by Burrell and Robertson are pre sented below .

The Northwest experiment station of the Federal Bureau of Mines , at Seattle , Wash . , was established in December , 1916 , and is one of 13 mining experiment stations maintained by Act of Congress , under the direction of the bureau , in the various sections of the country . Under the terms of the organic Act (March 3 , 1915 ) , the province and duty of these experiment stations is to cake investigations and disseminate information with a view to decreasing waste and improving the efficiency in the production , treatment , and utilization of mineral substances . The investigations carried on at the Northwest experiment station attempt to cover the needs of the mineral industry of the States of the Pacific Northwest and of the coastal regions of Alaska . The most in ortant needs of this district are for work on coal washing , electrometallurgy , and ceramics . The electrometallurgical investigations are not necessarily limited to the Problems of the Northwest , but may be of general application . Problems other than those specified above are referred to other stations of the Bureau that specialize on the particular type of investigation required . The Northwest station closely cooperates with the State of Washington through the University of Washington and with the State of Oregon through the Oregon Bureau of Mines and Geology . The University of Washington at Seattle has donated the use of an entire building , which houses the station's administrative offices and chemical laboratory , and parts of two other buildings which are usea in conducting the experimental avestigations . Twenty-five thousand dollars is expended annually by the Federal Government , while the State of Washington each biennium appropriates $ 20,000 , and the State of Oregon from time to time appropriates various amounts for the conduct of work along cooperative lines . Also , the station cooperates with private organizations tht have problems similar to those in which the station is interested . For example , the Washington Electrochemical Co. is cooperating in the electrometallurgical research, and furnishes part of the supplies and technical assistance required .

Objective To develop a passive, inexpensive technique for monitoring explosion overpressures within sealed areas in underground coalmines. Background From 1994 to 2000, seven explosions of methane and/or coal dust occurred within the worked-out, sealed areas (gobs) of underground U.S. coal mines. These explosions, believed to have been started by lightning, destroyed many seals and caused much damage external to the sealed area. One gob explosion went undetected until the mine operator reopened the sealed area and discovered the damage. Fortunately, these gob explosions did not cause any fatalities or injuries. Because lightning occurs in just about all mining areas, several questions arise. Could gob gas explosions be occurring in other sealed areas and going undetected? If so, what is the magnitude of the resulting explosion overpressures? The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) undertook a study to identify and evaluate passive measuring devices to monitor and quantify the overpressures associated with such explosions. This work was done in parallel with full-scale explosion experiments for evaluating the strength characteristics of seals used for isolating areas in underground coal mines. Approach Evaluation studies were done in PRL's 20-liter explosion test chamber and in the full-scale Experimental Mine at Lake Lynn Laboratory to evaluate the response and accuracy of various commercially available automobile tire pressure gauges to overpressures generated from gas and dust explosions. The first series of tests was done in the 20-liter chamber, which is used to study the explosibility and inerting of fuel dusts and gases. Data from the tire pressure gauge tests were compared to the pressure-time data obtained from the 20-liter chamber 's traditional electronic strain gauge pressure transducer recorded on a high-speed data acquisition system. To evaluate the tire pressure gauges, the valved inlet (tip) of the candidate pressure gauge was removed and the body of the gauge was cemented with epoxy into a 0.25-in pipe elbow and attached to the outside of the test chamber. A second series of tire gauge evaluation tests was done at Lake Lynn during explosion-resistance testing of seals used in underground coal mines. Full-scale seals (20 ft wide by 8 ft high)were constructed as one wall of a 2,000-ft3 chamber and exposed to a series of methane explosions. Average overpressures ranged from20 to 80 psi. The seals were built with various strength materials ranging from 7 to 48 in thick. The modified tire gauges are attached on the outside of the chamber to a 0.25-in NPT pipe that extends into the chamber (figure 1). The axis of the gauge is mounted at a right angle to the plane of the seal to minimize the coupling of any seal movement to the stem of the gauge that may cause inaccurate readings. The internal explosion pressure history is recorded with a strain gauge pressure transducer mounted inside the chamber. Methane is injected into the chamber, mixed with air, and ignited with an electric spark located at the geometric center of the chamber. Maximum explosion overpressures are recorded and compared with the tire gauge pressure.

A sequential sampler, based on the Archimedes screw, has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. Its initial purpose was to collect air samples during tracer gas studies in underground mines. However, the basic concept can be applied to other sampling needs, including sampling of liquids. A prototype was built and successfully tested in the Bureau's Experimental Mine at Bruceton, Pa. The simple design makes the sampler inherently durable and low in cost.

"Results from research directed at determining the reason(s) for the ""rank factor"" in correlations between coal workers' pneumoconiosis incidence and coal seam of employment are presented. Using compliance dust samples collected from two longwall panels operating in coal seams of widely different rank, respirable particles were identified by mineral species under manual scanning electron microscope (SEM) energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) analysis and then further characterized by their physical diameter, general shape, and periphery angularity. Size fractional, mineralogical variations are presented.Of primary significance, the percentage of mineral particles from the higher rank coal seam that were uncontaminated by non-stoichiometric elements for a specific mineral species was twice that of those in the lower rank seam. The relationship held for each mineral species, including quartz. This fact may form the basis for the ""rank factor"" known to exist as well as provide a reason for the contradictory role of quartz and other minerals in previous CWP studies.An important subsequent research priority is now focusing on determining the percent¬age of all respirable dust particles that are minerals versus single-phase organic or multi-phase organic-inorganic complexes. This effort will be accomplished usingautomated SEM-EDX. The mineral purity factor will be developed further, but additional emphasis will be focused on determining the extent of inorganic inclusions in organic particles."

This field study evaluated a newer and older dozer at a construction site. Both dozers performed similar activities in the same location within the construction site. Two operators participated in this study. One operator used the older equipment and the other operator used the newer equipment. Jolting and jarring measurements were taken at the seat/operator interface and at the floor of the cab. The result of this field study indicates that the newer dozer was better than the older dozer.

"INTRODUCTION The domestic production of potash has made rapid strides in the past 4 years. In 1929 the United States produced 109,820 tons of potash-bearing material, equivalent to 61,590 tons of pure potash (K20). In 1933 to this had increased to 331,110 tons, containing 143,378 tons of potash, due chiefly to the development of the potash deposits near Carlsbad, N. Mex. The potash ores of that district occur at a depth of about 1,000 feet and as mined consist of a mixture known as sylvinite containing about 40 parts of sylvite (KC1) and 60 parts of halite (NaCl). By careful mining the extraneous material does not amount to more than 2 or 3 per cent. Such ore was used in the experimental work here reported.The usual chemical method for the recovery of potash from sylvinite, while efficient in the production of pure potassium chloride, requires,expensive equipment and is costly to operate. It occurred to the Bureau of Mines that ore-dressing methods, which have been applied to other nonmetallic minerals, might be adapted for the production of a grade of potash suitable for the fertilizer industry. After preliminary study by the Bureau of Mines showed that ore-dressing treatment was possible the investigation was extended under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the Potash Company of America, and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSAcknowledgment is here given for valuable assistance in the laboratory of R. "INTRODUCTION The increased use of coal as pulverized fuel has focused attention on the grindability of coal and on the necessity of evaluating this property by a method suitable for use in the usual coal-testing laboratory. Without some knowledge of how various coals behave in the grinding operation, that is, how their use affects mill capacity and power requirements, the selection of coals for pulverized-fuel plants cannot be made on the same critical basis used in selecting coals for other types of burning equipment. The grindability of a coal, serves principally as an indication of the mill capacity attainable in grinding it - not as a direct index of the total cost of grinding. Although the grindability of coal may play a minor role at some plants, it is a decidedly important factor where pulverizer capacity limits the ability to carry high loads.Purpose Standardized tests for determining the grindability of coal are relatively new, so that the information now available on the grindability of various coals is limited in comparison, for example, with that available on proximate analyses. Published information is restricted to determinations on many important Eastern coals by the Fuel Engineering Co. of New York, 4/ a bulletin giving the results of numerous tests by the Babcock and Wilcox Co. 5/, and a comprehensive report on. Alabama coals by the Bureau of Mines. 6/This report presents the results of grindability tests of 34 samples of coals from Illinois, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and British Columbia at the Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, Seattle, Wash., in cooperation with the College of Mines of the University of Washington. In the future, as the laboratories of the Bureau make grindalility tests of other coals, additional reports will be issued."

"INTRODUCTION The underground mine of the Miami Copper Co. has operated since 1927 without a fatality from blasting or the handling of explosives. To improve safety and efficiency, electrical blasting has been used exclusively since 1934. During the period January 1, 1934, to December 31, 1948, inclusive, over 4,000 tons of explosives were used to produce 60,925,071 tons of ore with 896,760 feet of development footage and 2,591,788 square feet of undercut area.The purpose of this paper is to recount the company's precautions to insure safe handling of explosives at this operation, where safety involves careful planning rather than ""trial and error.""GENERAL INFORMATIONThe Miami Copper Co. operates on underground mine in a large, low-grade, Porphyry copper deposit near Miami, Ariz. The deposit contains numerous fractures and planes of weakness, which contribute to ease of working the ore bodies by the block-caving method of mining.An individual stope-caving method is used with stoles 150 feet by 200 to 300 feet and 30- to 50-foot pillars between stapes. After the stope is undercut, the ore is drawn through the draw raises on the grizzly level, and thence through the transfer raises to the ore chutes on the haulage level.Access to the mine is by four active shafts, three of which are primarily for ventilation. No. 5 shaft is used for both hoisting and service. There are four operating levels in the mine. The elevations of the grizzly levels are governed by the contour of the bottom of the ore body and therefore vary in different locations in, the mine.Grizzly levels are on the 850, 900, and 975 levels. The 1,000 level is the haulage level. This mine operates in very low-grade ore and requires economical handling of large tonnages safely and efficiently."

The Bureau of Mines is developing a method to recover Ni, Co, and Cu from laterites containing less than 1.2 pct Ni and 0.25 pct Co. The method consists of the following basic unit operations: (1) reduction roasting, (2) leaching, (3) solvent extraction, and (4) electrowinning. The method reflects three Bureau of Mines objectives: (1) recovery of critical minerals that are domestically in short supply from low-grade domestic laterites, (2) lower processing energy requirements, and (3) solution recycling. This report deals with the extraction of cobalt and the preparation of a suitable cobalt electrolyte by solvent extraction from liquor produced by this method. Nickel and copper are coextracted with LIX64N from an ammoniacal ammonium sulfate leach liquor containing about 1.00 g/l Ni, 0.30 g/l Co, 0.03 g/l Cu, and 0.02 g/l Zn. Cobalt (III) in the nickel-copper barren raffinate is reduced to cobalt (II) with cobalt metal. Reduction of cobalt (III) to cobalt (II) greatly aids subsequent extraction. Commercially available XI-51 extracts about 94 pct of the cobalt from the treated raffinate in one stage in a laboratory mixer-settler continuous circuit. Ammonia loaded on the solvent is removed in two washing steps. About 94 pct of the cobalt then is stripped from the XI-51 in one stage with spent cobalt electrolyte containing about 77 g/l Co and 18 g/l sulfuric acid (H2S04), Electrolytes containing less H2S04 also may be used. Preliminary data indicate that coextracted zinc may be removed from pregnant cobalt eletrolyte containing 3 g/l or less H2S04 with di-(2 ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA).
