"A knowledge of the carbon dioxide (002) content of the products of combustion, particularly from the boiler furnace, is very valuable. An instantaneous indication of the CO2 can be used as a useful guide to efficient burning. A permanent record over a. period of time gives a story to the management which tends to keep the operators more alert. Many instruments that indicate and record CO2 have appeared within the last fifteen years. More are about to appear. Although simple principles involving chemical, physical, or electrical qualities, are being used, there is at present a general feeling of uncertainty about such instruments in the boiler room any instruments are bought, run awhile, then lie idle indefinitely.Inquiries as to CO2 machines continually come to the Bureau of Mines from the general public, as well as from other branches of the Government. Some ten years ago a series of tests was made on certain instruments at that time on the market. The following test was made quite recently on four of the newer types, including one using an electrical principle. The four instruments were installed on one boiler each, according to the instructions of the makers, and the recommended routine attention was given them. The test was of a service nature duplicating the conditions under which the instruments ordinarily serve. The boiler that was available for this purpose was practically banked for some hours of the night. This caused the average CO2 for the entire twenty-four hours to be rather low, although it reached the higher ranges of the instruments during the day.Each day the charts were averaged and the results plotted to form the accompanying curve. The record of each instrument is shown by its particular mark, the dot, circle, cross and square being used in addition there is plotted for each day a rectangular area representing 1 % CO2 in height. The proper positions of this area was determined by means of the Crsat. Where the plotted point for an instrument falls within the rectangel its accuracy is within 1/2% CO2, which is considered satisfactory. Where it falls outside the rectangle, inaccuracy is indicated."

The first year's work of a proposed three-year study of the effects of the exposure of coal mine roof rocks to the mine atmosphere has been completed. The project has been terminated. The goal of the project was to determine if possible the mechanism or mechanisms by which coal mine roof rocks interact with the mine atmosphere and weaken, and coupled with mechanical stresses, ultimately fail. The scope of the study was limited to the effects of environmental factors on the deterioration of the rocks. While mechanical stresses may play an important role in the interaction of environmental factors, stress effects were excluded from the study. In order to study the effects of environment on coal mine roof rocks, samples were obtained from several coal mines in the western states. The rocks forming the roofs of most of the mines visited were shales of varying composition. These shales were subjected to numerous tests to determine how the rocks changed with time after exposure. In addition, the identity of the minerals present in the shales was determined by x-ray diffraction analysis and by thermal analysis as well as by optical microscopy

"Platelet activating factor (PAF) can be released from pneumocytes following exposure to occupational dust (Am. Rev. Respir. Dis. 135:83, 1987). In addition, PAF has been shown to induce pulmonary inflammation, edema, and bronchoconstriction (Hosp. Prac. 19, 67, 1983). This investigation reports the effects of PAF on the properties of three types of cells found in the lung. PAF (1-100, K1/2 = 2.5 pH) caused depolarization of neutrophils as well as generation of chemiluminescence and secretion of hydrogen peroxide. These responses were dependent on the presence of extracellular sodium. However, PAF did not alter oxygen consumption of neutrophils. Although PAF (10 uM) caused depolarization of alveolar macrophages, no stimulation of chemiluminestence, superoxide secretion, or oxygen consumption was observed. However, PAF (10 uM). did potentiate chemiluminescence and superoxide secretion in response to zymosan (2 mg/ml) by 55% and 36%, respectively. In addition, PAF (10-90 uM) caused aggregation of alveolar macrophages. PAF (2-10 uM) also caused depolarization of type II cells, but did not affect membrane integrity or oxygen consumption. However, PAF (10-18 PM) enhanced the activities of two distinct forms of cytochrome P-450 in type II cells and caused aggregation of type II cells at PAF doses above 18 uM. These data indicate that PAF can affect the secretory activity of pulmonary phagocytes and the ability• of type II cells to detoxify foreign compounds (Bureau of Mines Grant - G1175142).INTRODUCTIONPlatelet activating factor (PAF) is a glycerophospholipid (1-0-alkyl-2-acetylsn-glycerol-3-phosphoryl choline) which has been shown to Mediate a broad range of biological activities (1-3). "Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa) and thromboxane A2 (TXA2) are major products of the activated alveolar macrophage and serve as key mediators of lung injury. In order to determine if the synthesis ofTXA2 and the release ofTNFa are associated, the production of these inflammatory agents by the human alveolar macrophage (AM), as a result of activation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), was assessed in the absence and presence of the thromboxane synthase inhibitors UK 38,485 (Dazmegrel) and OKY 046. UK 38,485 and OKY 046 inhibited both LPS-stimulated TXA2 production and TNFa release in a dose-dependent manner. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production was not increased by UK 38,485 or OKY 046. Neither LPS nor UK 38,485 had any effect on LT84 production by AM. Neither UK 38,485 or OKY 046 had any effect on LPS-stimulated interleukin-I beta release. However, the TXA2 mimetic, U46619, did not stimulate TNFa release by AM either in the absence or presence of UK 38,485. These findings suggest that 1) UK 38,485 and OKY 046 are inhibitors of both TXA2 production and TNFa release by activated human AM, 2) UK 38,485 probably does not exert its inhibitory action on TNFa release through effects on eicosanoid production and 3) the possibility that TNFa- and TXA2-induced lung injury may be subject to amelioration by imidazole-based compounds should be further evaluated.IntroductionTumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFa), produced by monocytes and macrophages, is a potent peptide mediator of lung injury (1,2). The exaggerated release of TNFa has been implicated in the etiology of acute lung reactions such as septic shock of bacterial or viral origin (3,4). The role of TNFa is expressed primarily through its ability to activate a variety of cell types within the lung environment including polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs, ref. 5), type II epithelial cells (6) and fibroblasts (7). The role of lipid mediators in lung disease has also been extensively characterized (1). In particular, the relationship between pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis and the production of oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (here termed ""eicosanoids"") appears to be a key factor in a variety of disease processes in the lung (8). The alveolar macrophage (AM) synthesizes primarily prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). thromboxane A2 (TXA2) and leukotriene 84 (LT84, ref. 9). These eicosanoids have been shown to produce a variety of effects in the lung including bronchial smooth muscle dilatation (PGE2, ref. 10), vascular smooth muscle contraction and platelet aggregation (TXA2, ref. 11) and oedema and immune cell extravasation (LT84, ref. 12)."

Cell number and volume were determined with an electronic cell counter equipped with a sizing attachment.Rat alveolar macrophages were obtained by pulmonary lavage with ea2+, Mg2+-free Hanks balanced salts solution. 15 Alveolar macrophages (94% pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium, counted, and sized electronically.Rat alveolar type Il cells were isolated by enzymatic digestion for 35 minutes at 37°C with 40 µ/ml type I elastasc and 0.1 % collagenase and purified by centrifugal elutriation. 16.17 Type Il cells (92 % pure) were resuspended in HEPES-buffered medium for measurement of membrane potential, oxygen consumption, and trypan blue exclusion. Type Il pneumocytcs were resuspended in 0.1 M NaCl plus 0.05 M HEPES (pH = 7.8) to measure cytochrome P450-dependent activities and aggregation. Cell size and number were determined electronically."

Domestic production of lithium minerals, source of the lightest metallic element, has increased from an average of 1,327 short tons of concentrate in the 1935-39 period to approximately 37,830 short tons in 1954. This rather phenomenal growth in production and use reflects growing industrial interest in the metal and its salts. This information circular has been prepared to summarize for the casual technical reader the reserve, mining, processing, and consumption situation pertaining to the mineral spodumene - the principal source of lithium. A relatively complete bibliography is included for those who may need more detailed information.

It has been suggested that radicals on the surface of dust particles are key chemical factors in the pathophysiology that results from the occupational inhalation of coal and silica dust. In addition, oxygenated derivatives of arachidonic acid (eicosanoidsJ have been implicated as important biochemical mediator5 of mineral dust-induced lung disease through their role in bronchial and vascular smooth muscle reactivity, inflammation, and fibrosis. Therefore, we assessed eicosanoid production by the rat alveolar macrophage (AM) exposed in vitro to mineral dusts with varying surface chemical characteristics in order to determine if radicals associated with the mineral dust could influence the production of proinflammatory mediators in the lung environment. Primary cultures of rat AM were exposed to freshly fractured or "stale" bituminous coal dust, as well as untreated silica or silica calcined to 500 and 1100°C. Prostaglandin E1 (PGE;V, thromboxane Ai (T}(Ay, and leukotriene 84 (LTB; levels in incubation medium were determined by specific radioimmunoassay. When AM were exposed to freshly fractured coal dust, PGE2 production was markedly increased. In contrast, exposure of AM to "stale" dust significantly reduced PGE1 production. Exposure of AM to freshly fractured coal dust resulted in a significant increase in production by AM, while exposure to stale coal dust did not influence AM TXA1 production. Neither "fresh" nor "stale" coal dust had any effect on LTB4 production. In vitro exposure of AM to untreated silica resulted in a significant increase in TXA1 PGE.,, TXA; and LTB4 production compared with control. However, exposure of AM to silica calcined to 11oo•c resulted in eicosanoid levels that were not significantly different from control. These effects were still apparent 8 wk after calcination of the silica particles. Silica was a more potent activator of AM eicosanoid production than was coal, and amorphous fumed silica was a more potent activator of AM eicosanoid production than was crystalline silica. These findings suggest that radicals associated with respirable coal and silica particles may play a key role in the ability of mineral dust to activate AM eicosanoid production and therefore may be important in the pathophysiological consequences of occupational mineral dust inhalation.

The first step to emergency preparedness is defining and analyzing hazards. Although all hazards should be addressed, resource limitations usually do not allow this to happen all at once. Risk assessments are used to establish priorities so that the most dangerous situations are addressed first and those least likely to occur and least likely to cause major problems can be considered later. While the examples provided in this training package are specific to mine fires, the concepts and tools can be applied to any mine hazard. Purpose: This training package was developed to assist instructors, as they: 1) determine how to use risk assessment to improve preparedness for mine fire emergencies and 2) present risk assessment concepts and tools to trainees. Audience: This package is appropriate for workers/trainees from all types of mines. A risk analysis can be conducted by anyone familiar with the location(s) being studied. Why Conduct a Fire Risk Assessment? During a risk assessment, hazards are evaluated in terms of the likelihood that a problem may occur and the damage it might cause. Mine fire preparedness requires consideration of all possible fires that could occur. However, at a given mine some fires are more likely than others and some would result in greater damage than would others. Conducting a risk analysis identifies these differences. The results can be used to target resources at the types of fires that are most likely and/or are most destructive. Hazards that are very likely to result in fires that would do considerable damage to people and property should be targeted first for remediation and/or effective response if remediation isn't possible. Potential fires that are less likely or that would have less severe consequences are identified for attention later, after the more serious situations have been addressed.

Mullite is a substance of prime importance in ceramic technology . Despite this fact , its thermodynamic properties have received little attention . A Bureau of Mines literature survey disclosed the absence of lowtemperature heat capacity data , the absence of an experimental entropy value for 298.15 ° K , and the lack of heat content data beyond the temperature range from 298° to 576 ° K. Data supplied in this Bureau report fill these gaps in the thermodynamic knowledge of mullite . According to equilibrium phase studies of Aramaki and Roy ,3 the mullite phase melts congruently at 2,123 ± 15 ° K , and the equilibrium crystallinephase composition extends from Al Si2013 to Al6.8 Si₂ Q4.2 . The results in this report are for the stoichiometric composition , Al Si¿Qз . • Heat capacity measurements were made over the temperature range from 50 ° to 298 ° K , and the entropy at 298.15 ° K was evaluated . The Bureau of Mines has conducted field studies in coal mines through- out the United States to determine the effectiveness of electromagnetic techniques in locating miners trapped underground following a mine accident. Data from these tests have been used to generate models of expected signal and noise distributions as found above mines throughout the coalfields. These distributions have aided in placing the expected performance of a through-the-earth electromagnetic communications technique into a probabilistic framework. Results show that at a 10-pct false alarm rate, the expected probability of detecting a miner's signal from a depth of 1,000 ft is 54 pct; at 500 ft it is 95 pct. These depths exceed the actual depths of 90 pct and 50 pct, respectively, of U.S. coal mines. Sensitivity studies have shown that at a depth of 1,000 ft, for every 3 db of improvement in signal-to-noise ratio, the probability of detection increases 6 to 8 pct.

This report covers magnetic field strength measurements vs range and frequency in low-medium coal mines. Both quasi-conductor-free and conductor-proximity areas were investigated. The program covered 5 mines, 4 seams, 6 measurement sets, and 3 geographic areas. The results have been summarized in terms of maximum communication range expected per seam and noise condition. Scatter gain is further explored as a simple measure of energy coupled to conductors.

Low-temperature heat capacity measurements were conducted, and entropies at 298.15° K were evaluated for sodium monomolybdate (Na2Mo04), magnesium monomolybdate (MgMo04), and calcium monomolybdate (CaMo04). The 298.15° K entropy values were sodium monomolybdate, 38.1±0.3 cal/deg mole, magnesium monomolybdate, 28.4±0.2 cal/deg mole, and calcium monomolybdate, 29.3±0.2 cal/deg mole.

Applicability of the fluosilicate sintering process to recovering beryllium from beryl-spodumene concentrate analyzing 1.4 to 3.7 percent BeO (10 to 30 percent beryl) was investigated. The work was one phase of a Bureau of Mines research program undertaken to assess applicability of conventional processes and to devise new procedures for treating various potential beryllium feed materials. Beryllium recovery of about 70 percent in a product of 99-percent BeO grade was achieved in treating 3D-percent beryl concentrate. The process consisted of (1) sintering a briquetted charge of concentrate, soda ash, and sodium fluosilicate for 3 hours at 750° C.; (2) extracting the soluble beryllium by multiple stages of water leaching; (3) adding caustic to the leach solution and boiling to hydrolyze and precipitate crude beryllium hydroxide; (4) dissolving the crude beryllium hydroxide in sulfuric acid and separating the solution from undissolved silica; (5) sulfidizing the acid beryllium solution to precipitate heavy metal impurities; (6) adding ammonia to the clarified sulfate solution to precipitate beryllium hydroxide; and (7) converting the hydroxide to beryllium oxide (beryllia) by calcining at 900° C. About 60 percent more sodium fluoSilicate was required per unit of beryl than is used industrially in treating 10-to 12-percent BeO concentrate (80 to 90 percent beryl). Recovery decreased, and flux requirements increased, when treating concentrates containing less beryl.

Ecuador's economy continued to slow in 1982 due, in part, to declining foreign demand for oil, depressed world oil prices, and high international interest rates. Real growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated to be in the 2% to 3% range, down from the revised 4.3% recorded in 1981 and the 4.5% anticipated officially. In current prices, the GDP in 1982 was estimated at $12.1 billion.2 Inflation abated slightly from that of 1981 to an estimated 13.9% annual rate. The sucre was devalued in May by 32%, the first time in more than a decade, as a result of the pervasive flow of capital abroad. Ecuador's production of petroleum increased an estimated 1.9% in 1982 compared with that of 1981. The consortium of Corporación Estatal Petrolera Ecuatoriana (CEPE), the state oil company holding a 62.5% interest, and Texaco Inc. (37.5%) produced an estimated 98%, or approximately 211,000 barrels per day, of the total from the northern part of El Oriente, the eastern jungle region, where a Texaco-Gulf Oil Corp. partnership discovered oil in 1967. Gulf subsequently sold out to CEPE in 1977 for $117 million, Remaining production was from the Santa Elena Peninsula Fields on the Pacific coast where production has been steadily declining for several years.

Coal is found in the northeast comer of Georgia, in Dade, Chattooga, Walker, and Floyd Counties. Five seams, which underlie all of Lookout, Sand, and Pigeon Mountains, have produced most of the coal mined in the state. Representative analyses of Georgia coals show that they are typically low sulfur (less than one to one percent), low-to-medium volatile, bituminous deposits. Although there is no active mining in the state, reclamation continues on several permitted areas. In 1983 the State of Georgia relinquished primacy to the Office of Surface Mining. Since that time permits have been issued and mining completed. All the sites are presently in the process of bond release.

The Vest nickel prospect, in Floyd County, Va., was discovered about 25 years ago. Limited exploration of the deposit had indicated some appreciable nickel mineralization in the sulfide ore. The property was examined on March 9, 1943, by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in company with C. W. Vest, owner of the property. A limited exploration program was recommended. Two holes totaling 320 feet were diamond-drilled in January 1944. Drilling indicated the sulfides are sparsely disseminated. The only nickel values of interest were at the old prospect shaft.

Heats of solution of cerium metal and cerium (III) chloride in hydrochloric acid were measured. The standard heat of formation of the aqueous cerium (III) ion at 25° C is -166.1 ± 0.3 kcal/mole. Heats of solution of cerium (III) chloride in hydrochloric acid are consistent with the existence of a complex CeC1++ having a stability constant of 1 and a heat of complexing of 5.4 kcal/mole.

Laboratory test work has shown that the Germania ferberite-scheelite ore can be concentrated to an acceptable grade. A ferberite concentrate assaying 66.9 percent tungstic oxide was made, with a recovery of 75.4 percent. A second concentrate of ferberite and scheelite was made assaying 54.2 percent tungstic oxide. Final beneficiation of combined rougher gravity concentrates was accomplished by roasting, magnetic separation, sulfide flotation, and retabling, to give a final ferberite-scheelite concentrate of 66.2 percent tungstic oxide, with a 91.1-percent recovery. INTRODUCTION This presentation covers the results of laboratory beneficiation tests conducted on tungsten ore from the Germania Consolidated Mines, Inc., by the Bureau of Mines Mineral Dressing Section, Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory, Albany, Oreg. This mining property is near Fruitland, on the southern edge of the Spokane Indian Reservation, Stevens County, Wash. The Germania district produced tungsten concentrates before and after World War I; interest is being renewed in the district because of the metal shortage.

"The belief is now fairly general among the coal-mining people of the United States that one of the most effective methods of preventing wide-spread coalmine .explosions is that of introducing rock-dust into coal mines to reduce the inflammability or explosibility of dusts found on mine surfaces. Notwithstanding this belief it is improbable that even a small fraction of 1 per cent of the coal mines of the United States are at all adequately protected by rock-dust; in a survey made in the summer, and fall of 1927 it was found that but 463 out of more than 7,000 operating bituminous and lignitic coal mines were using rock-dust at all, and that few if any of the 463 were fully or adequately protected by rock-dusting.Inspections of a large number of mines through the United States by Bureau of Mines safety division field men have failed to reveal a single adequately rock-dusted mine, Yet there is no doubt that many of the owners and operators believed their properties to be fully protected by rock-dust against the much-feared hazard of widespread explosion. Two of the most disastrous explosions of recent years occurred at properties where the owners were definitely of the belief that the rock-dusting done had made the mines immune to widespread explosion involving coal-dust. In both instances it was found that although some rock-dusting had been done, the mines were more nearly 1 per cent than 100 per cent rock-dusted.This condition as to inefficiency or insufficiency of rock-dusting in the coal mines of the United States is almost universal, and unless our mining men awaken to its, dangers, the disaster record of the coal-mining industry is much more likely to become worse than better. During the fiscal year ended June 30, 1928, the attention of the safety division of the United States Bureau of Mines was called to. 22 explosions With 320 fatalities in bituminous coal mines of the United States; and of the 22 explosions there were 10 with 258 fatalities in mines that were listed as having used rock-dust; upon investigation it was found that as usual the rock-dusting had been anything but comprehensive or adequate. It is probable that in a very few instances last year the relatively small amount of rock-dusting stopped the .extension of the explosion and thus prevented further expansion of the death list. In general, however, the explosions occurred in a part of the mine that had not been rock-dusted - and right here is the crux of the failure or probable failure of present-day rock-dusting in the United States, There should be no part of any bituminous or coal mine in which all of the exposed surfaces (roof, ribs, and floor) have not been thoroughly rock-dusted and kept thoroughly rock-dusted. In other words, all exposed surfaces of all accessible places in bituminous and lignitic coal mines should be kept covered with rock-dust so that the combined rock-dust coal-dust mixture at all times and in all places has less than 35 or 40 per cent combustible matter, The only exception to this rule is that surfaces which are wet (and this does not mean merely damp) need not be rock-dusted. However, a mine opening may have several inches of water on the floor and yet have much explosive dust on the ribs and roof above the water; in such places the ribs and roof should be kept rock-dusted, irrespective of the wetness of the floor."
