In distributing natural and mixed gas, the industry is each year confronted with the problem of manufacturing gas in increasing amounts as the supply of natural gas becomes more nearly exhausted. The manufactured gas is now used in mixtures with the still available natural product, and will subsequently be used straight as a substitute gas. The gases that might be considered, and are producible by tried and developed processes, include water gas, carbureted water gas, and coal gas. Singularly, these gases can be used in this manner in ordinary appliances only when proportional amounts of them in the mixtures do not vary beyond rather definite limits, unless burner adjustments are made. The limits are defined by the specific gravity, content of inerts, and burning properties of the respective gases. Anticipating a future standard for city gas lower than that of natural gas during the period when considerable natural gas is available, there is justification for considering the possibility of re-forming natural gas and making a product that has substantially the same properties as other gases which can readily be generated. This report gives the results obtained during a series of tests made under a cooperative agreement by the U. S. Bureau of Mines with the Ohio Fuel Gas Co., re-forming natural gas at Toledo, Ohio, in full-scale operation in a water-gas generator having a grate area of 25.1 square feet. The Federal Bureau of Mines, as part of its goal to minimize undesirable environmental impacts associated with mineral processing, has investigated a soda-smelting technique for processing ilmenite into pig iron and a titanium slag that is suitable for a feed to a sulfate-process titania pigment plant. By this procedure, the generation of ferrous sulfate waste and its associated disposal problem is obviated. Molten titania slag was quenched, water leached, and filtered to yield a sodium titanate intermediate product containing about 70 wt-pct Ti02, 1 wt-pct Fe, and 20 wt-pct Na20. This intermediate product, high-soda titanate (HST), was mixed with H2S04, calcined, quenched, and water leached to produce a low-soda titanate (LST) product that contained only 2 wt-pct Na20. Both the HST and LST were evaluated as feed materials for preparing titania by the sulfate process. About 95 pct of the Ti02 was extracted from HST and LST by digestion in concentrated or 50-wt-pct-H2S204 solutions. About 95 pct of the solubilized Ti02 was subsequently recovered from the titanyl sulfate solutions by hydrolysis. Barren solutions from hydrolysis, containing about 26-wt-pct H2S04, were upgraded by vacuum-thermal evaporation or electrodialysis. The regenerated acid solutions were used to digest additional HST and LST.

"Cellular damage induced by silica dust is known to be associated with increased fragility and destabilization or destruction of the cell membranes. The mechanism by which silica dust effects biological membranes is still unknown. Using the ESR spin-trap methodology, we find that hydroxyl radicals are generated in aqueous suspensions of freshly ground silica. The amount of the radicals generated depends on the extent of grinding and ""freshness"" of the dust. Using linoleic acid as a model lipid, we show that the silica dust causes lipid peroxidation via ·OH, 02-, or linoleic acid related radicals as intermediates. Catalase and superoxide dismutase inhibit the formation of these radicals. The results suggest that free radicals associated with freshly ground silica and the related lipid peroxidation of the memberanes may be the starting point of the silicotic processes.INTRODUCTIONDespite considerable-effort over the years, the mechanism by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrosis are still not fully understood (1,2). It is generally thought, nevertheless, that the interaction of the quartz particles with the cell membranes is the starting point of the silicotic process (3). We felt that the mechanism of the membrane damage by quartz might involve oxygenated free radicals because (a) a suspension of quartz particles in contact with alveolar macrophages has been reported.(4,5) to initiate an enhancement of lipid peroxidation, defined broadly as the ;oxidative deterioration of polyunsaturated components of lipids, and (b) hydroxyl (·OH) radicals are known to be capable of peroxidation by abstracting hydrogen atoms from cell-membrane lipids (6) and initiating lipid peroxidation in lysosomal membranes (7). Moreover it is known that exposure of cell membranes, fatty acids and unsaturated food oils to ionizing radiation, which generates ·OH. radicals, causes rapid peroxidation (6). Earlier studies o~ the aqueous chemistry of quartz suspensions have reported detection of HzOz (8), implicating the formation of ·OH radicals as transient species, but, we are not aware of any report of the detection of ·OH radicals in quartz suspensions and this provided the motivation for the present undertaking. Since it is known that, because of their high reactivity (hence short life time) in aqueous media, the ·OH radicals cannot be detected via electron spin resonance (ESR) directly (9,10), we have used ESR combined with the spin-trap methodology (9) for studying the •OH formation."

A construction material based on plasticized sulfur and mineral aggregate, that is superior in corrosion resistance and strength to portland cement concrete. The material can be used in the chemical, metallurgical, and fertilizer industries, and will also provide an attractive market for by-product sulfur resulting from compliance with pollution regulations. How It Is Made Sulfur concrete is thermoplastic material. Plasticized sulfur is mixed with sand and gravel aggregate heated to 375-400° F. The sulfur melts and acts as the binder or cement. The sulfur concrete is poured hot and sets at a temperature of 200° F. Full strength is attained in a few hours, compared to several days for portland cement concretes. Sulfur concrete even pours and sets in freezing weather. Although unmodified sulfur with aggregate will produce a sulfur concrete with good initial properties, it undergoes crystallographic modifications, and deteriorates with time, particularly when exposed to moisture or freeze-thaw conditions. The Bureau of Mines has developed plasticizers which, when reacted with the sulfur, give sulfur concretes with excellent moisture and freeze-thaw resistance. The plasticizers are based on mixtures of dicyclopentadlene (DCPD) and ollgomers of cyclopentadiene. About 5 percent by weight of the plasticizers is reacted with molten sui fur for several hours. The sulfur cement can be used directly or allowed to solidify for easier handling and storage.

"There is considerable evidence that all mine dusts do not present the same health hazard. Rank of coal and composition, especially silica content of the mine dust, shape, and surface charge are risk factors that affect the incidence and severity of CWP. Current efforts of Center researchers involve characterization of:•,size/shape/composition•,surface and functional groups•,particle interactions.Work is underway to prepare and characterize respirable coal dust samples, and to develop and evaluate techniques and procedures for the characterization of respirable dust. A suite of standard samples including anthracite, medium volatile and high volatile bituminous coals, quartz, clay, and rock dust have been prepared and thoroughly characterized with respect to the distributions of particle size and compositions. A comparison of the morphology of the standard dust particles with similar particles collected in an underground coal mine is given in Figure 43. Samples of these characterized (Standard) dusts have been distributed among various research groups associated with the Center.The aerodynamic diameter of a particle is a particularly important characteristic since this parameter determines the point of deposition in the human respiratory tract. A 3-dimensional numerical model for theoretically determining the equivalent aerodynamic diameter of irregular shaped particles has been developed and used to analyze coal dust particles and a particle shadowing technique has been developed for .experimental 3-dimensional shape analysis (Figure 44). In the theoretical technique, the equivalent aerodynamic diameter of the particle is numerically determined from computation of the fluid drag on the particle. This allows the aerodynamic diameter of any regular or irregular shaped particle to be determined as a function of the particle's orientation or as an average over all particle orientations. The technique is quite accurate in that the aerodynamic diameter of several coal dust particles have been numerically determined to be within 5% of experimentally measured values."

This study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for four underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.06 to 4.99 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of December 6, 1974, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1974, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1975 indexes. Initial capital investment ranges from $23,629,500 for the 1; 06- million-ton-per-year (MM tpy) mine to $79,907,500 for the 4.99-MM-tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $35,336,500 to $1 18,863,500 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $13.57 to $11.36 per ton, assuming a 15-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has compiled data on the major causes of fatal and nonfatal electrical accidents related to mining, and their associated costs, for the 1980-85 period. Specific electrical problem areas were identified, allowing future research to be focused on reducing the frequency of these occurrences. Recommendations for reducing the number of electrical accidents and injuries are provided. The four mining sectors for which data were gathered and compiled are (1) underground coal mines, (2) surface at underground coal mines, (3) underground metal-nonmetal mines, and (4) surface at underground metal-nonmetal mines. Nine categories of information pertaining to specific aspects of the accident are used in this report: activity engaged in when the accident occurred, source of injury, job title, mining method, location, machine, nature of injury, accident type, and part of body affected. The number of years of experience at the specific job the employee was performing when the accident occurred, time of accident, and in the case of nonfatal accidents, the total days lost per year, are also summarized.

"INTRODUCTION For a number of years the bureau of Mines has been engaged in the detection, recording and interpretation of earth- and air-transmitted disturbances, man-made and natural, related to mining operations. For the measure¬ment of such disturbances, special equipment was developed (1, 2, 3, 4, 8) 3/ and results of the measurements have been reported (5, 6; 7,9).In general, the ranges of amplitude end frequency of vibration encountered and recorded in the earth-transmitted disturbances were 0.00005 to 0.1 inch and 5 to 5,000 cycles per second; in the air-transmitted disturbances, pressures ranging from 0.001 to 100 pounds per square inch and 0 to 20,000 cycles per second were recorded.One characteristic of the earlier tests was that either the arrival time of the disturbance to be recorded was predictable or the recording speed was slow enough so that the record covered extended periods of time (for example, 4 hours). As the investigations continued, it became apparent that a recording device was required that would respond to transient vibrations arriving at indeterminate times and at the same time provide a permanent record of displacement or acceleration versus time on a scale that would permit the analysis of waves having frequency components up to 10,000 cycles per second. A film or paper speed of 720 inches per second was found to be adequate, as this provides approximately 3/4 inch of record for each 0.001 second."

"Although the advantages of large-capacity air receivers for underground mines are plainly evident from published information about various installations in the United States and abroad, details of their construction are not generally known in this country., Ordinary present-day air-compressor installations servicing mining machines are designed to supply air at a specified pressure in sufficient quantity to meet the peak demand of the mine,2/ although this demand may exist for only a few minutes out of 24 hours and, as usually happens, eventually exceeds the capacity of the compressor. Most of the receivers provided with these compressors (to a certain degree of standardi¬zation) are capable of storing a volume of air approximately equal to that compressed in 1 minute by the machine.3, 4/ As a result, during peak-load periods the compressor operates at full load capacity without maintaining kick-off pressure. At other periods of the work cycle, production of compressed air is intermittent.At least one large mine5/ has adopted large-capacity receivers to reduce wear on its air-compressing system caused by the sudden demand of peak loads. Under the old system, the compressors jumped suddenly from half speed to full speed; boilers furnishing steam to the compressors were taxed heavily to provide the increased requirements of power; and machines using the air, among which were four large hoists, were required to operate at 65 pounds per square inch rather than at the 90 pounds per square inch for which the compressors were regulated. Operation of air machines, especially drills, at pressures lower than those for which they were designed decreases their efficiency and increases maintenance costs. In addition, air that comes directly from the compressors has had little opportunity to cool and dry enroute.6./ As a result, quantities of compressor lubricant and water are carried into the machines that use the air. When expansion occurs in the cylinder or turbine of such engines, the temperature of the air drops, and this oil and water is precipitated. The water washes away lubricating oils in the machine, causing poor performance and high cost of maintenance; the compressor oil, in addition to being a poor lubricant for compresed-air engines, exerts a corrosive action on gaskets and rubber hoses.7/Reduction of peak demands on air compressors by large receivers lowers power costs by establishing more nearly constant load factors,8/ and in some cases by permitting the use of smaller compressor capacity.8,9/Load factor is the ratio of average demand to maximum demand; a low load factor costs money.10/Elimination of high-peak demands raises the load factor by making the average and the maximum demand more nearly equal. Further savings may be made possible by large receivers where their use permits charging to be done at night in regions having lower power rates during that period.11/Where ordinary receivers are used, compressor breakdowns cause immediate work stoppages in the mine owing to lack of air. Similarly, the capacity of a large receiver has been known to permit uninterrupted work in the mine until the compressors have been returned to service.9/Large-capacity receivers, either steel-tank or underground rock-chamber, offer a practical solution of many existing problems by providing a sufficient reserve of compressed air within the pressure range required for efficient operation of machines to level off peak demands on the compressor. The com¬pressors operate when the demand has reduced the pressure in the receiver below the regulating pressure and until all air used from the receiver has been replaced. It has been found possible in at least two mines,8.9/ one of which the author has visited, to entirely eliminate one compressor and to obtain more efficient performance from the remaining one by the construction of an underground coal-chamber receiver.8/"

"INTRODOCTIONMeasurement of the contribution of diesel exhaust to respirable aerosol in mine environments has become increasingly important because of current concerns over the occupational health effects resulting from exposure to diesel emissions. In response to this, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is developing and evaluating new sampling methods for measuring diesel aerosol in underground mines. Two such techniques are being studied by the Bureau, size selective sampling and Chemical Mass Balance (CMB) modeling. These techniques use measurable physical or chemical characteristics of a mine aerosol sample to infer the amount of diesel particulate material contained in the sample.Size selective sampling is being adapted for measurement of diesel aerosol by the Particle Technology Laboratory (PTL) of the University of Minnesota under sponsorship by the Bureau. 1 It is based on the premise that diesel and mineral dust aerosol can be physically separated by size and collected during sampling using inertial impaction. An independent effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to develop a size selective sampling technique was also sponsored by the Bureau.The second technique, CMB modeling, is being developed by the Bureau as an alternative measurement technique to referee the results obtained using size selective sampling.3 It compares measured trace element ""finger prints"" of aerosol sources with similar profiles of mine aerosol samples. From these, the portions of the sample contributed by each source can be determined. Results of these investigations in underground coal mines have confirmed that diesel and coal dust aerosol are of different size and can be measured separately using size selective sampling techniques.A major difference in diesel usage among underground mines is the requirement for exhaust gas cooling systems in coal and gassy noncoal mines. Nongassy mines usually employ limited exhaust conditioning in the form of catalytic converters, which have limited effect on primary exhaust particulate. The cooling system in most general use in gassy mines is the water scrubber. This device has little effect on most of the gases but removes particulate material from the exhaust. 5 Because of this, exhaust aerosol characteristics in nongassy mines are expected to be different. To see if size selective sampling techniques can be used in such mines, the Bureau and the University of Minnesota conducted a second study in three metal and nonmetal mines, two nongassy and one rated as gassy."

"Information gathered during recent months by field men of the U. S. Bureau of Mines shows that in one State alone there have been 71 fatalities from electrical causes during the last 51/2 years, of which 55 were from contact with mine trolley wires operated at 250 volts or less, direct current. The 1928 law relating to the guarding of trolley wires in the-mines of this particular State reads: ""All trolley wires carrying a voltage of class 2 must be properly shielded except where the same are at least 61/2 feet above top of rail."" Class 2 voltage is defined as being ""between 300 volts and 600 volts direct current, or 240 volts and 480 volts alternating current."" From this it may be inferred that no guards are required, for 250-volt trolley wires, and the natural conclusion to be drawn is that the lack of guards or shields must be held responsible for these fatalities. To prevent fatalities from this source, it has been advocated that every foot of trolley wire in mines should be guarded. While some such drastic step may appear to be amply justified, a closer examination of the records shows that lack of guards is not entirely responsible but rather that carelessness and neglect in the observance of certain well-established simple rules concerning installation and location of trolley wires must also bear a share in the responsibility. In -other words, if trolley wire is installed carelessly and its maintenance neglected, failure may be expected of any guards that have been put up.There are a-number of factors affecting safety as related to trolley wires in mines, among which the following may be enumerated.1. Installation relative to track and passageways.2. Guarding.3. Maintenance.4. Discipline.Acknowledgment is made to D. Harrington and K. L. Marshall of the safety division of the bureau for assistance given in securing data on cost of installing guards for trolley wires.The statement that fatalities should not be charged in every case to lack of guards is supported by the following example: A man operating a locomotive was electrocuted when the trolley wheel jumped the 250-volt trolley wire and allowed it to sag against his shoulder. He was sitting in the regular place provided in the locomotive, but the wire was 11 inches inside of the rail and only 39 inches above it where the wire touched him, or 11 inches from the roof at a distance of 12 feet from the nearest hanger. The accident occurred between two hangers 44 feet apart, and the trolley wire was inside the rail over the entire distance, being 2 inches inside at one hanger and 10 inches inside at the other hanger. A bolt in the roof indicated that there had been a hanger at one time between the two on the 44-foot span.This example is a violation of good practice in the installation and maintenance of trolley wire. In the first place the wire should have been outside instead of inside the rail. In the second place there should have been at least one intermediate hanger so that the span would not be so great and the sag would be reduced. Furthermore, it is possible that the wire was not taut enough even when the intermediate hanger was in place.To provide a degree of safety for men in the mines certain coal-mining States, recognizing the need, have enacted laws to regulate the installation of trolley wires. These limit the distance that the wire must be kept outside and above the rail. Thus, the 1927 mining laws of Ohio specify that:"

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of barite (BaSO4) from 35 U.S. and 41 non-U.S. mines and deposits in 17 market economy countries (MEC's). This evaluation assesses the availability of mud-grade barite, and concentrates consumed by the chemicals and fillers industries. The demonstrated resources defined in this analysis totaled 130 million metric tons (Mmt) of barite (contained BaSO4), yielding a potential 115 Mmt of recoverable barite concentrates. At the 1984 MEC production rate, the evaluated resources would last about 30 yr; however, this would include production costs of up to $100/mt concentrate. An average price needed to cover all costs of production over the life of each operation was determined for both mud-grade and chemical- and filler-grade barite products. Including a 0-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR), regional weighted- average total production cost ranged from $38/mt for barite concentrates in Asia to $71/mt for U.S. operations. Transportation costs have the greatest impact, contributing up to 60 pct of the total cost of production. Rail transportation costs from the mines to U.S. markets are generally significantly higher than ocean shipping rates on imports.

"The Baboquivari mining district is about 60 miles southwest of Tucson, Ariz., the present railroad shipping point. The values are silver and gold. The silver is largely associated with the black oxides of manganese. The ore is highly oxidized, and careful panning shows only a very small amount of pyrite. Our sample analyzed as follows:A flotation mill has been installed in the district, but it does not concentrate the precious metals satisfactorily. Our best laboratory flotation results were obtained by grinding to pass 65-mesh and floating with Xanthate or standard flotation oils plus sodium sulphide and polysulphide. This sulphidizing method gave a concentration of 32 per cent of the silver and 80 per cent of the gold, which about equals plant practice.We do not know of an instance where the oxidized forms of manganese have been concentrated satisfactorily by flotation.Plain cyanide on the original ore extracts practically all of the gold but only one-third of the silver. A preliminary deoxidizing roast, using producer gas or powdered coal, gives a calcine from which cyanide dissolves about 90 per cent of the gold and 75 per cent of the silver. This method of treatment, known as the Clevenger-Caron process, is described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 226.Preliminary treatment with sulphur dioxide by burning pyrite or sulphur and passing this gas into the pulp until all of the contained manganese is dissolved or changed in form best prepares the ore for cyanidation. The acid consumption will vary with the percentage of manganese and other soluble constituents. Neither gold or silver is dissolved by this acid treatment. The washed residue gives maximum cyanide dissolution of the gold and silver with minimum loss of cyanide,"

This paper reports the results of solution calorimetry conducted to obtain the heats of formation of crystalline FeS04?6.952H20 and FeS04?1.008H20, from. which values were derived for the stoichiometric compounds FeS04?H20 and FeS04?H20. Also included are derived values of the free energies of formation and dehydration. This work was undertaken primarily to fill a need for data for pure, easily obtainable ferrous compounds that are suitable for use as calorimetric intermediates, The ferrous sulfate hydrates meet the essential requirements for this use.

The Bureau of Mines conducted drag cutting experiments in hard, abrasive rock in an effort to extend the capabilities of an experimental kerf-core mining machine. The basic kerf-core mining machine cannot be used in hard, abrasive rocks because of the high wear experienced by the kerf cutters. These experiments were conducted in an effort to develop a method of preweakening the rock ahead of the kerf cutters in order to reduce the high cutting loads and hence the higher wear rates experienced by the cutters. The two "preweakening" techniques studied were indenting with mechanical wedges and single and double slotting with diamond saws. The best cutter force reduction achieved with mechanical indenting as 70 pct, whereas double slotting achieved force reductions of up to 99 pct. Conceptual designs of preweakening systems that could be retrofitted onto the basic kerfing cutterhead were developed for both the indenting and the slotting techniques. A high-energy impactor with wedge bit was used for the indenting method, and high-pressure water jets were used for the slotting method. A preliminary technical and economic analysis was performed for both of these full-scale systems to illustrate the methodology and to point out the important technical and economic factors that must be considered.

During the 7-1/2 years (January 1945-June 1952), immediately preceding enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, 26 major disasters3/ in the coal mines of the United States caused the deaths of 491 persons. In the next 7-1/2 years under the act (July 1952-December 1959), only 12 major disasters occurred. The total killed was 148. This improvement is commendable. However, the continuing frequency of minor fires and gas and/or dust ignitions in the Nation's coal mines, many of which could have been of major consequence, are cause for serious concern to the coal-mining industry and those affiliated agencies engaged in promoting safety in the industry. The data presented in this report have been prepared to make available to the coal-mining industry and related groups an overall perspective of the disaster potential from mine fires and gas and/or dust ignitions in coal mines after 7-1/2 years under the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act. This act, effective July 16, 1952, which amended the original Federal coal-mine investigative act of May 1941, provides under Title II certain enforcible mine-safety provisions designed to prevent major disasters caused by explosions, fires, inundations, and man-trip and man-hoist accidents in coal mines that employ 15 or more individuals underground.

As a part of the program of the Rare and. Precious Metals Experiment Station, Reno, Nev., in connection with investigations of treatment methods for precious and precious-base metal ores, to further conservation and recovery of precious and base metals, tests Were made on samples from the Buzzard Mine, located in the vicinity of Placerville, Calif. These samples represented ore exposed during previous development work, in tunnels and a shaft on the property, including highly oxidized material from the surface zone and sulfide ores from depths of 150 to 300 feet. The surface samples contained little base metal and only enough gold 80 that economic exploitation of them would depend on development of a large tonnage of ore, low-cost mining methods, and satisfactory treatment methods. The sulfide samples were valuable enough to warrant further exploration and development and, if present in suitable tonnage, the installation of a treatment plant for recovery of both precious and base metals. The oxidized surface-zone samples carried 0.11 to 0.14 ounce gold per ton. Standard amalgamation and flotation tests of these samples gave low recoveries. Standard cyanidation tests indicated high consumption of lime and cyanide and gold extraction of 79.4 and 82.7 percent. Water-leaching the ore after crushing to minus 10-mesh improved cyanidation considerably. Ex-tractions of 82.7 to 85.8 percent were obtainec1 with lime consumption of 6 to 7 pounds per ton of ore and cyanide consumptions of 1 to 4 pounds. Grinding the samples to minus 200-mesh followed by water-leaching and cyanidation gave improved extractions of 91-92 percent of the gold, but with slightly increased consumptions of lime and cyanide.

As with many new technologies, the rapid growth in solution mining for uranium has created uncertainties regarding the environmental impact of mining operations. In solution mining, the largest area of concern is the impact of the process on the quality of ground water supplies. As a result, a rapid and reliable technique of detecting lixiviant excursions is desirable. Such a method would replace the periodic sampling technique and should provide a more or less continuous monitoring method. To this end, resistivity techniques were evaluated as an alternate means of tracking lixiviant movement. A program was devised which had five specific tasks. These were: (1) evaluation of the techniques, (2) development of the most promising technique or techniques, (3) field testing of the techniques, (4) testing of the BuMines probe, and (5) reporting. The result of the analytical and field work is that various resistivity/ resistance techniques do provide a means of detecting lixiviant movement in Northern Wyoming. Surface and downhole galvanic surveys and controlled source audio magnetotellurics (AMT) were evaluated. All three techniques showed some degree of success.

[During the past several years a great deal of discussion has centered around the question of the permissible limit of sulphur content in fuels for automotive and aviation motors. Under certain conditions of operation, sulphur in motor fuels causes the formation of corrosive substances which attach bearings, wrist pins, and other parts of engines. On the other hand, in making gas¬oline from certain stocks, the gasoline fraction normally contains a relatively large proportion of sulphur compounds. By the generally used processes of reducing the sulphur content, a significant part of the gasoline fraction is lost as motor fuel, and added expenses are entailed for chemicals, labor, and other process costs. This condition has been an economic burden to some refiners of high-sulphur crudes. In some instances the treating losses have been rather severe and the treating costs relatively high, but the data presented in this paper indicate that the reduction of sulphur content of motor fuel is a problem to a relatively small number of refiners and of little or no concern to the remainder; in fact, more then 90 per cent of the 153 samples analyzed passed the Federal specification requirement, which limits the sulphur content to 0.10 -nor cent. 3 This report is based upon the results of an examination for sulphur content, Doctor test, copper strip corrosion, and color of the samples collected during January, 1930, for the twenty-first semiannual gasoline survey of the Bureau of Mines. 2. Preliminary Study - Initial Probing 2. 1 Introduction Initial probing of the mine passage is required prior to the emplacement of the sealant material or deployment of the seal checker system. Factors which are of interest in sealing and checking include a. size and condition of the mine passage b. location of the borehole with respect to the ribs c. the presence of water flows d. the proximity to an intersection The importance of each of these factors depends strongly on the sealant material. Because the sealant material had not been selected at the time of the initial probing study, a broad survey of probing techniques was conducted. The capabilities and limitations of each technique as they applied to probing through the borehole were identified. To facilitate this comparitive evaluation, Table I was prepared which lists all passage conditions which might affect the emplacement of sealant material in the passage. The most satisfactory techniques for observing each condition of interest are listed together with the effects of the observation on the sealing operation.
