"Accidents at coal mines in the United States in September 1926 resulted in the loss of 170 lives, according to information furnished to the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, by State mine inspectors. Of this number 125 occurred at bituminous mines and 45 in the anthracite field. As the bituminous output of coal for September was 48,976,000 tons, and the production of anthracite was 8,444,000 tons, the fatalities reported represented a death rate of 2.55 per million tons for bituminous mines and 5.33 for anthracite mines. The industry as a whole showed a fatality rate of 2.6 per million tons of coal produced in September 1925 the rate for bituminous coal mines was 3.29; the anthracite mines were idle in September last year due to a strike.During the first nine months of the present year 1,759 men have been killed by accidents at the coal mines throughout the United States, resulting in a death rate, per million tons of coal produced, of 3.76 as compared with 3.95 for the same period in 1925. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed a nine-month fatality rate of 3.53 which was about the same as the corresponding rate from January to September in 1925. The anthracite rate for the present year, however, shows a decrease of about 17 per cent; that is, the rate has declined from 6.36 to 5.28.Records covering the first nine months of 1926 show that 12 ""major"" disasters, that is, disasters in which five or more men were killed at one time, have resulted in the loss of 271 lives as against 10 disasters and 199 deaths in the corresponding months in 1925. The fatality rates for these disaster: alone were 0.579 and 0.465, respectively. One major explosion occurred at Tahona, Oklahoma, on September 3, 1926, in which 16 men lost their lives.An analysis of the principal causes of the 1,759 fatalities for the first nine months of the present year shows a reduction in the death rate as a whole and for falls of roof and coal and for explosives, but an increase in haulage, gas and dust explosions, and electricity. This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,421 samples, representing the products of 131 companies. The samples were collected during June, July, and August, 1953. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor-Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

Over 80 pct of domestic phosphate rock, which is the starting material for phosphorus-containing fertilizers, comes from central Florida deposits. As K-her grade deposits are depleted, lower grade phosphate ores containing 'Mg0 in the form of dolomite are encountered. Treating high MgO ores with present beneficiation technology will not yield a concentrate meeting specifications for acidulation. The Bureau of Mines conducted research on three high-MgO phosphate samples from south Florida. The sales contained, in percent, 5.4 to 10.2 P205, 1.9 to 7.6 MgO, and 35.3 to 60.1 acid insolubles. A technique of sizing, grinding, desliming, scrubbing, and redesliming was used to produce a feed suitable for continuous flotation studies, A conventional fatty acid-fuel oil rougher flotation followed by two to three cleaner stages resulted in concentrates containing, in percent, 30.7 to 31.3 P205, 0.6 to 1.3 MgO, and 2.5 to 4.8 acid insolubles. The P205 recovery from the flotation feed ranged from 55.1 to 89.7 pct.

This paper is a continuation of a series made in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC), Inc. The first of this series of reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36, and succeeding reports described motor gasolines sold during the summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed

A versatile torsion creep tester was instrumented with electromechanical and servomechanical components to operate automatically and unattended, producing digital printed outputs. The apparatus uses an electrical system for applying torsional stresses, and a unique angular transducer as a null detector operating a servocontrolled strain measuring system with the digital readout. The tester is designed to measure the creep in single-crystal or polycrystalline zinc, zinc alloys, magnesium, magnesium alloys, or other metals and alloys. Applied stresses may be varied from zero up to 2,000 psi in the outermost fibers of a 1/8-inch-diameter, 4-inch-long specimen. Strain readings to 0.001 degree, equivalent to a strain of 2.73 X 10-7, may be made automatically from one every 5 seconds to one per month. The apparatus has provisions for programed temperature control and special atmospheres or vacuum operation. A discussion of applications of the system to other mechanical testing apparatus is included.

Experiments do provide evidence that the actions of unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of silicotic processes. This paper summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica surface, and the effect of particle size on silica toxicity. This paper also discusses the ways in which silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on freshness, hydrogen bonding, and free-radical interactions.INTRODUCTIONSilicosis is a debilitating pulmonary disease that afflicts persons (miners, foundry workers, ceramic workers, heavy construction workers, etc.) who chronically inhale silica-containing dusts (Schepers, 1960; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). Since silica is second only to oxygen in weight percentage of the earth's crust (about 28%) and is found in an enormous diversity of minerals, it is natural that silicosis is one of the major industrial health hazards all over the world. Although silicosis has. been studied extensively, the mechanism by which the dusts exert their toxic actions on cells and the processes by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly understood. The biological characteristics of the dusts are largely unknown, although it is suggested that the dust size, shape, surface charge, roughness, surface chemical composition, trace metal content, and crystallinity; dose of silica in the ambient air of the workplace; duration of exposure; genetic variation in exposed subjects; personal respiratory patterns; and presence of any coexisting disease (such as tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis) all influence the expression of silicosis (Koskinen et al., 1983; Noweir et al., 1980; Raask and Schilling, 1980; Reiser and Last, 1979; Thorne et al., 1985; Wolff et al., 1981). The actual biochemical mechanisms through which these factors operate are still unclear. However, the experiments do provide evidence that the actions of certain unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of the silicotic process (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Marks, 1957; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Summerton et al., 1977). The objective of this research was to develop methods and determine conditions under which metallic sulfides with lower boiling points than sphalerite may be removed from zinc sulfide concentrates by volatilization. A higher percentage of extraction of lead, cadmium, and germanium than is common in current practice was sought. The investigation, conducted by the Metallurgical Branch of the Minerals Technology Division, Region VI, showed that, under proper conditions, it is possible to remove over 90 percent of the lead, cadmium and germanium as an enriched sublimate. The uses of lead, and cadmium to a lesser extent, are well-known. Although germanium was discovered in 1886 by C. Winkler, commercial use has been achieved only in recent years. The amount consumed per manufacturer unit is so small that the price of germanium may still be quoted by the gram. The electronic industries have been the chief consumer of this semiconductor. Germanium is sold largely to the fabricator as a dioxide for reduction to metal and subsequent processing into wafers for use in diode and triode electronic tubes. Extensive research at Purdue University during World War II led to the first practical use of germanium.

Crude-petroleum pipe lines in the United States on May 1, 1941, had a total length of 118,350 miles - an increase of 7,770 miles since Jun, 30, 1936, then the last previous survey was made by the Bureau of Mines. The expansion was due almost entirely to trunk-line construction, as the mileage of gathering lines was virtually unchanged from 1936. The greatest mileage of gathering lines, 53,640, was recorded in the survey of May 1, 1931. Both trunk and gathering-line mileage decreased moderately, in the interval from 1531 to 1936, but the present survey indicates that trunk-line facilities have expanded since 1936 to new high levels. Truck-line mileage equaled 55 percent of the total mileage of all crude lines on May 1, 1941, and 52 percent is 1936. The total length of gasoline pipe lines on May 1, 1941, was 9,001 miles this does not include several hundred miles of life under construction at that time or several hundred additional miles now being laid. No detailed surveys of gasoline mileage were made for 1, 1931, and June 30, 1936, but the mileage for those dates was about 1,400 and 4,600, respectively.

No mines are active in the Hunter Mountain Wilderness Study Area (WSA), and no mineral resources have been identified in the WSA. However, the Monarch Mine has low potential for silver, copper, tungsten, and gold resources in quartz veins; the Shirley Ann Group and Sal Group have moderate and low potential, respectively, for silver, lead, and copper resources in skarn; claims overlying the Eureka Quartzite have low potential for silica resources; and the Tourmaline N1-4 Prospect has low potential for tourmaline resources in quartz monzonite. Copper, lead, silver, tungsten, molybdenum, wollastonite and garnet occur in skarn zones between monzonitic and carbonate units. Silver, tungsten, and copper also occur in quartz veins within monzonite. Known metallic mineral deposits are small, erratic and discontinuous. The J. 0. Mine, adjacent to the northeast corner of the WSA, may contain as much as 26 million tons of subeconomic wollastonite resources. The crest of an open pit to produce that resource would extend into the WSA. No information exists on geothermal potential because no exploration has been done in the area. No occurrences of energy minerals are known within the WSA.

This Bureau of Mines investigation was conducted to obtain an experimental solution of stress changes in the vicinity of a circular opening in an infinite plate. Plates were stressed biaxially in compression and subjected, by four different-length shoes, to a uniform pressure at opposing points on the opening periphery. The principal stresses along the vertical and horizontal axes, which result from peripheral pressure, were obtained from the photoelastic analysis of four frozen-stress epoxy models. These principal stresses were then super-imposed on the mathematically determined principal stresses (along the same axes) obtained from a theoretical biaxial stress field in which the magnitude of the lateral pressure was one-third that of the vertical pressure. The results indicate that an increase in shoe length increases the radial compressive stress and the tangential tensile stress (except tangential compression at r/a = 1, which exists for all shoe lengths). Also, a partial control of the stresses within one-half radius of the opening surface is accomplished by a change in the magnitude and placement of peripheral pressure.

Tremendous volumes of petroleum ( crude oil and natural gas ) at present cannot be recovered economically . The feasibility of using nuclear explosions for production stimulation therefore has been investigated . Data from underground nuclear tests conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission were reviewed , and the physical effects were evaluated for stimulating petroleum production . Calculations of the effect on ultimate recovery of increasing reservoir temperature with nuclear explosives showed disappointingly small increases . Production increases caused by fracturing of massive low- permeability reservoirs appear technically and economically promising . Petroleum reservoirs that might be converted from submarginal to commercial production are being located and evaluated as to potential reserves and as a location for a field test .

This paper presents some research studies of the rotary drilling of oil shale at the Bureau of Mines Oil-Shale Mine, Rifle, Colo. The experimental procedures and the rotary drill test equipment are described. Theories of rock drillability, rotary bit cutting action, and bit design are presented and discussed. The actions of various bit designs are analyzed and compared with the observed results of actual drilling tests. A cost estimate is made for drilling Colorado oil shale.

In studying the destructive distillation or pyrolysis of oil shales, the primary consideration is to determine the effects of heat on the organic components of the shale. The impracticability of separating these organic components, collectively known as "kerogen", from the mineral matter with which they are associated renders the problem extremely complex. The behavior of the kerogan in the shale while undergoing the heating process is probably different from that of the same kerogen if it could be isolated and treated under similar temperature conditions, and in fact the results of actual distillations have shown that the physical properties of the mineral matter in the shale may be the cause of much variation in the products of retorting. It must be remembered that the inorganic .material of the shale is a heterogeneous mixture of minerals solidified into a very close-grained compact mass. This mineral mass has a thermal conductivity different from that of the kerogen, thus complicating the problem of even distribution of heat. Furthermore, the temperatures of dehydration of gypsum end some; hydrous silicates are included within the temperature range of the shale distillation, These minerals are frequently present in the shales; and the evolution of water vapors from them will affect the partial pressures of the hydrocarbon vapors evolved from the kerogen, probably tending toward, the improvement of the quality of the oil distillates. Carbonates and sulphides which are also frequently present begin to decompose within this range of temperature, and the gases produced from them may alter the chemical constitution of the oils produced from the kerogen.

The Bureau of Mines is developing alloys using ion implantation as an alternative to bulk alloys that consume large quantities of strategic materials such as chromium and nickel. These alloys are formed at the outer layer of relatively common materials. To more fully understand the corrosion characteristics and physical properties of this outer layer, it was necessary to deter-mine the alloy concentration as a function of depth into the substrate material. Also, since many of the ion-implanted alloys would be utilized at elevated temperatures, it was necessary to determine the diffusion behavior of the implanted element. Proton-induced X-ray emission and inert gas ion sputtering have been utilized to generate composition depth profiles for Fe-Cr, Fe-Ni, and Fe-AI ion implanted alloys fabricated by implanting 25-kev Cr+, Ni+, or AI+ into iron substrates. The data were fitted (utilizing a computer program) with symmetrical Gaussian profiles yielding values for the range and range straggle of the ions. These parameters were then compared with those calculated from theory. Changes in the profiles due to annealing were investigated and values for the diffusion coefficient were obtained assuming diffusion according to Fick's Law. For the Cr+ and Ni+ implantation, the profiles as-implanted agree reason-ably well with theory and exhibit ?norrmal" diffusion characteristics at 500° C. For the Al+ implantation, the profile as-implanted is much broader than predicted and exhibits substantial enhanced diffusion at temperatures up to 500° C.

The environmental and nutritional characteristics necessary for maximum copper extraction from a low-grade ore by Ferrobacillus ferrooxidans have been explored as have many of the limiting parameters. Criteria considered were oxygen consumption, copper extracted, soluble copper concentration, temperature, pH, particle size, nutrients, and other inorganic salt concentrations. A set of environmental and nutritional conditions were developed for E. ferrooxidans Which supported cell reproduction and maximum microbial oxidation of a low-grade copper sulfide ore. Percolator tests conducted under these optimum conditions resulted in an 18 percent increase in the quantity of copper microbially extracted over that extracted under conditions considered to be standard. Manometric tests determined those extremes of environmental conditions and nutritional factors Which were detrimental to the extraction of copper by E. ferrooxidans.

A 1,000-hour test with a gas turbine at 1,200° F showed a working fluid of 1 gr of ash per 100 scf of power gas (79 percent of the ash 7 to 35 microns in diameter) to be excessive for acceptable blade wear for commercial practicability. Blades in the turbine consisted of about 20 percent each of chromium, cobalt, and nickel; 3 percent molybdenum; 2-1/2 percent tungsten; and smaller amounts of manganese, columbium, and tantalum. Erosion of both the fronts and backs of the turbine nozzles was particularly heavy, the trailing edges being worn to a featheredge. Erosion of the buckets was less marked, although the leading edges were somewhat pitted. A refractory-lined combustor performed efficiently and with little abrasion of the lining by the ash-laden gas.

In this Bureau of Mines report, appropriate equations correlating the activity of water with the activities of electrolytes in binary and multicomponent solutions have been derived for computer calculation. It was found that the half-integer power series are far superior to the integer power series, for both types of series having the same number of terms. The pro-posed method of calculation is capable of accurately yielding the activities of all components from the measurements of the activity of a single component at various concentrations. This method replaces the cumbersome and objection-able method of graphical integration of the Gibbs-Duhem equation. Two novel methods are proposed for determination of activities of electrolyte solutions important in hydrometallurgy; (1) Water vapor pressure measurement by differential pressure transducers having an accuracy of 0.001 pet, and (2) transpiration method with an inert gas bubbled through concentrated solutions followed by the analysis of the evaporated and redissolved electrolytes with specific ion electrodes having a sensitivity of ±10-10 molal. The first method is suitable for nonvolatile electrolytes, and the second, for volatile electrolytes such as hydrogen halides, HN03, H2S03, etc. The existing methods of estimation of ionic activities have been surveyed, and the best method has been selected, discussed, and summarized.

Refuge Chamber Expectations Training was created by a multidisciplinary team at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to inform miners of what to expect psychologically and physically if it became necessary to use a refuge chamber in a mine emergency. The presentation can be used either for one large group or for individual miners. The training is a multimedia Adobe Flash presentation containing pictures, audio, video, and interviews with miners who have used a refuge chamber in an emergency. It must be run on a computer with Adobe Flash Player installed (refer to the computer system requirements section).

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), as part of its continuing research program for evaluating coal dust explosion hazards, has investigated several areas in which current practices may need to be updated in order to adequately protect mines against coal dust propagated explosions. In the United States, current rock dusting requirements remained largely unchanged since 1969. US Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations Section 75.403 is based on a coal dust particle size survey performed in the 1920s and later was supplemented by full-scale testing of the rock dust ability to inert a coal dust explosion. NIOSH recently conducted a comprehensive survey of US underground coal mines to determine the range of coal particle sizes found in dust samples collected from the mine entries. Due to advancements in technology and modern coal mining techniques, the current coal dust particles in intake airways are significantly finer than those found in the mines in the 1920s. According to past full-scale dust explosion test results, the current rock dusting practices used in today?s mines to inert a coal dust explosion may not be adequate. Other closely related issues such as rock dust testing methods and sampling procedures are discussed.
