This report is a compilation of results of brief preliminary tests on sulfide ores that contained gold and silver and, in some cases base metals. It is a companion paper to a recent similar report on oxide ores. Simple treatment methods employing the least possible equipment sometimes produce satisfactory results on marginal ores and in small-scale operations. Investigations of typical ores from newly discovered or recently explored mining districts have been made in continuation of a long-established part of the hydrometallurgical and ore-dressing program of the Reno station, Bureau of Mines. The purpose of such investigations is to encourage the search for and development of mineral resources and particularly to assist in the economical exploitation of low-grade and marginal ores as well as the conservation and recovery .of values in products that were discarded from former operations because of inability to treat them profitably. Several of these investigations have been limited to preliminary tests of samples from prospecting operations, whereas same involved samples of old dumps or tailings piles. The test work in these cases was not extensive enough to warrant publication as individual reports, but is of considerable interest inasmuch as it indicates the possibilities as well as the limitations of treating the respective materials. The samples were representative of the districts from which they wore obtained, so this information should be helpful in the future development of these districts.

Real gross national product (GNP) grew at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.2% in the third quarter, down from a revised 3.0% in the second quarter, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Department of Commerce (table 1). The slowdown in the rate of growth was attributed to the summer drought, a larger trade deficit, and a decline in Federal spending for defense. Exports slowed from the second quarter, as the dollar, compared with other industrial country currencies, edged up. Imports of both consumer goods and capital goods rose sharply, with consumers buying more foreign cars, computers, and electrical machinery. Although net exports of goods and services deteriorated slightly from the second quarter, the U.S. trade position continues to be much improved from 1987 and first quarter, 1988. Business spending for new plant and equipment rose at a 4.6% pace, well below that recorded earlier in the year. The 3.5% increase in consumer expenditure was accounted for mainly by nondurable goods and services; expenditure for durable goods--those products lasting more than 3 years--rose only 0.4%. Inflation, as measured by the fixed-weighted GNP price index, rose at an annual rate of 4.9% in the third quarter. Prices rose slightly less than they had in the second quarter, when inflation reached a 6-year high. In September, 1988, the President signed a U.S.-Canada free trade agreement (FTA) which will eliminate all tariffs and most nontariff barriers between the two countries by 1999, thereby creating the world's largest open market. In 1987, U.S.-Canadian bilateral trade totaled $161 billion. The expansion of trade is expected to generate 5% higher growth for Canada and up to 1 % higher growth for the United States by the end of the century. The higher growth for the United States translates into an estimated 750,000 jobs, and $2.4 billion in exports. Canadian parliamentary approval of the agreement is still required before the treaty can take effect. The debate in Parliament is continuing, and the issue is not expected to be resolved until after the November 21 election.

The Taylor's friction circle method for slope stability analysis can be extended to incorporate multiple circles defining the slip surface in a failure mechanism so that it is a workable method for bearing capacity calculations of foundations and rotational failures of retaining walls and similar structures. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has further extended the multiple-circle method to include friction in the material strength and to utilize computational schemes such that this method can be programmed with optimization capabilities rather than being used as a graphical or semigraphical method. Some examples are given that demonstrate ultimate bearing capacity calculations of embedded foundations with eccentric loads and nearby slopes.

Flexible hoses with rated working pressures up to 40,000 psi are used when high-pressure water jets are employed to cut rock or improve the performance of mining machines. Hose failures at such high pressures can result in serious injuries to workers. The Bureau of Mines used fatigue and burst tests to investigate the failure modes of high-pressure hoses at their rated working and burst pressures. Fatigue failure, at rated working pressures, occurred when the inner liner of the high-pressure hose broke, allowing water to seep through the wire wrapping, although the reinforcement wires did not break. At the burst pressure, all hoses failed catastrophically when the reinforcement wires broke. Low-pressure hoses placed over the high- pressure hoses for safety failed to contain water released by catastrophic failure.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are studying methods to prevent workers from being entangled in machinery used at mining operations. An analysis of mining accidents in the United States that resulted in a fatality or permanent disability from 2000 through 2005 showed 438 severe incidents that involved contact with machinery or equipment, an average of 73 per year. Researchers determined that the most common machinery involved in these severe accidents was conveyors. Also, a significant portion of the accidents occurred during machine maintenance and repair. Researchers are focusing on improved methods to prevent unintentional machine startup during maintenance activity and methods to detect workers near moving machine components. One new technology that shows promise for this application is intelligent video. Popular in the surveillance and security industries, these systems use cameras and computerized video analysis techniques to automatically detect the presence of people in preset zones within the camera?s field of view. A preliminary study has been initiated to determine if this technology could reliably detect the presence of workers in hazardous locations near machinery. Possible advantages of the use of this technology include improved detection zone demarcation and improved ability to distinguish between hazardous and non-hazardous proximity, compared to conventional proximity sensor techniques. Initial tests to detect a person near a conveyor system in daylight conditions showed promising results. A description of the technology, test procedures and results, implementation challenges, and future research needs are discussed.

Bench-scale and continuous testing were performed to adapt the anionic process for flotation of calcium activated silica to the fine-grained hematitic-goethitic jaspers from the Marquette range, Michigan. These ores typically contain about 35 percent Fe and require grinding to about 80 to 100 percent minus 400 mesh to insure an adequate liberation of gangue from the iron oxides. A method for removal of troublesome slime fractions without excessive iron loss, by first dispersing the quartz and then selectively flocculating the iron oxides, was evolved in the laboratory and successfully accommodated to pilot plant practice. The efficiency of the flotation process was improved with respect to both reagent usage and concentrate grade and recovery by using the selective flocculation-desliming technique as a pretreatment. The benefits of the combined desliming-flotation procedure were most evident in pilot plant processing. The best tests on two ores yielded recoveries of about 84 percent in concentrates containing 65.1 percent Fe and 4.8 percent SiO2 and 66.2 percent Fe and 3.9 percent SiO2, respectively. These results are in comparison to recoveries about 10 percent lower than the above to concentrates containing 63.9 percent Fe and 6.6 percent SiO2 in the one instance, and 63.6 percent Fe and 7.2 percent SiO2 in the other, obtained by flotation without the prior desliming treatment.

This information circular describes a computer program called VARSAT2D, a comprehensive unsaturated fluid flow simulator developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. VARSAT2D solves for either a vertical or horizontal, transient or steady-state solution in variably saturated, heterogeneous, anisotropic porous media using the Galerkin finite-element approach. Simplex triangular elements are used. Moisture retention characteristics are described by specifying either the Brooks and Corey, Brutsaert, or Van Genuchten power functions, with hysteresis described using the Maulem independent domain model. Boundary conditions may include any combination of time-varying seepage, pressure along solution domain, boundaries and/or at internal node points, unit hydraulic gradient at the lower boundary, and a uniform source and/or sink. This program should be a welcome addition for mining and environmental hydrologists, researchers, and engineers interested in modeling unsaturated fluid flow.

"A convective dispersion model has been utilized to calculate the real-time airborne dust concentration in mine airways using re-entrainment as the only source term for airborne dust. It incorporates two important sources of re-entrainment in mines -- air velocity and movement of objects. The model has a sink term accounting for the deposition of particles along the airway. The model is solved using a finite difference scheme which is coded for computer. The computer model outputs airborne respirable and total dust concentrations along the airway as a function of time. The real-time and average gravimetric concentrations from several in-mine experiments were compared with the results from the simulation of the experimental conditions. This model can be used for estimating airborne dust entrainment due to air velocity, equipment movement, and persons walking. INTRODUCTIONEdwards and Ford (1988) developed a model for coal dust explosion suppression and utilized a predetermined value of threshold velocity for flowing air to pick up dust from floor. Depending on the strength of the removal forces, re-entrainment can increase the airborne dust concentration in mine airways. The most prevalent forces causing re-entrainment in mine airways are the drag and lift forces due to flowing air, and removal forces due to the movement of persons and vehicles. Shankar and Ramani (1991) have investigated the unique characteristics of the re-entrainment phenomenon in mine airways. Experiments on re-entrainment of coal dust particles were conducted in mine airways, and in a wind tunnel (Shankar and Ramani, 1994a, and 1994b). The results from the two experimental studies were found to compare well (Shankar and Ramani, 1995). There is no reported model to determine the airborne dust concentrations due to airflow or persons walking under conditions existing in mines. The present study is a part of a continuing research project in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust on the spatial and temporal behavior of airborne dust in mine airways (Ramani, 1983)."

This Bureau of Mines report deals with water infusion of coalbeds, which can control methane emission at face areas during developmental mining and which may sometimes suppress dust. Studies show that water infused into the coalbed flows through the fracture system and displaces the methane in the fractures and prevents migration from the solid coal. Displaced gas migrates away from the face area that has been water infused and enters the return ventilation airways. A gradual decrease in methane emission is observed from the start of infusion until the infused zone is mined through. Depending on the permeability of the coalbed, infusion pressures ranged from 300 to 2,200 lb/in2. Face emissions in the Upper Kittanning coalbed were reduced by 89 pet; reductions of 38 to 79 pet were measured in the Pittsburgh coalbed depending on the relationship between the face cleat direction and mining direction. Respirable dust levels were reduced by about 75 pct on a longwall section in the Pocahontas No.3 coalbed and by about 50 pct on a development section in the Upper Kittanning coalbed, but no statistically reliable reduction was found in the respirable dust levels in the Pittsburgh coalbed.

"The acOustic impedances of seven rat lungs were measured at frequencies between 100 and 6400 Hz. Rats were divided into two groups: a silica exposed group (N=3) and a control group (N=4). The silica exposed group was injected intratracheally with silica solution. Three of the control group were intratracheallyinjected with saline. Between four and six weeks after theinjections, all lungs were excised and degassed. Lungs were,suspended in a pressure Chamber, with the trachea canula attached to the end Of a tapered impedance tube. The lungs were subjected to transpulmonary pressures between -30 cm H2O and 6 cm H2O to simulate deflation and inflation. With transpulmonary pressure being held constant, the impedance tube was excited with random noise. A dual channel analyzer calculated H12(f), the transfer function between the two microphones. This function was used to calculate the lung's impedance at that pressure. The impedance magnitude spectra of both groups typically had peaks at 2000,3500, and 5500 Hz. Statistically significant differences. (90%confidence level or greater) between the two groups occur at the 3500 Hz peak at transpulmonary pressures of 20, 8, 6, 4, and 2 cm of H2O. This fact seems to confirm that this method can detect. lung disease. Further research will indicate whether this method will be able to detect the onset Of coal worker's pneumoconiosis.INTRODUCTIONOne of the first studies of impedance Of the human lung were conducted by DuBois et al.[2] using the forced OscillatiOn technique. This technique, however, was limited to frequencies below 30 Hz. Further studies by Van Den Berg [6] revealed thatthe lung reflected higher frequency sounds (100-10,000 Hz), instead Of behaving as an anechoic termination. This discovery has lead to several studies of the acoustical properties of both human and animal lungs at high frequencies [3,4,5]."

The Bureau of Mines instrumented two similarly backfilled stopes--one filled in the normal manner and the other with the fill densified using vibratory compactors--to evaluate the effect of fill compaction on subsequent vein-wall closure proposed as a adjunct process for strengthening cemented fill. Hydraulic pressure cells to monitor pressures within the fill and mechanical closure devices to measure vein-wall movement and the procedure for their installation are described. The field compaction work was generally performed manually by utilizing small commercial concrete vibrators. A prototype immersible vibrator using slusher cables to propel the vibrator in the stope was used on several lifts of fill. Although compaction efforts were less effective than anticipated in increasing the final density of fill, analysis of the field data does indicate somewhat improved strain characteristics and an increased pressure buildup for the densified fill. The effects of a prolonged period of inactivity and of rock burst occurrences in the immediate area are also reflected in plots of strain and pressure within the two instrumented stopes.

Calcareous rocks, of which the principal varieties are marble and lime¬stone, are used extensively for building and ornamental purposes. Onyx and travertine, subdivisions of these groups, are sufficiently distinctive in origin and use to merit separate classification. The purpose of this paper is to define the terms "onyx" and "travertine" and to describe the occurrences and uses of the materials bearing these names. ORIGIN AND CHARACTER Confusion exists in the use of the word "onyx." True onyx is a banded chalcedony, a form of silicon dioxide related to jasper, agate, and flint. Calcium carbonate is commonly deposited from solution in successive layers of varying color closely resembling onyx, and for this reason such calcareous rock is also called "onyx." The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of variations in content (near the residual level) of the impurities aluminum, nitrogen, manganese, and copper on the corrosion rate in pressurized hot water and in pressurized steam of zircaloy-3, a zirconium-base alloy of 0.25 percent tin and 0.25 percent iron. Thirty-five 10-pound ingots were cast with the appropriate additions of impurity elements, and these were converted to wrought sheets. These specimens were then tested both in water and in steam. The analysis of the resulting data showed that in environments of either pressurized hot water or superheated steam, corrosion rates increased with increasing content of aluminum, nitrogen, or manganese, but were not affected by variations of copper. The effects of aluminum and nitrogen were found to be greater than the effect of manganese. INTRODUCTION At the request of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in August 1956, the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Bettis Plant of Westinghouse Electric Corp., began investigating the effects of certain impurity elements on the corrosion rates of zircaloy-3 in pressurized hot water and in pressurized steam. It was necessary to know these effects in order to set control limits on residual impurity levels in zirnaloy-3, intended for heat transfer service in the nuclear reactor of the pressurized water type. A factorial expert it was designed by Westinghouse statisticians. The Atomic Energy Commission provided raw zirconium sponge purchased from Wah Chang Corp. The Bureau's laboratory at Albany, Oreg., made material of different combinations of impurity levels and subjected the material to corrosion tests. This report will describe the work done at the Bureau laboratory and will show, quantitatively the effects of different residual levels of aluminum or nitrogen, or manganese or copper on corrosion rates.

While coal occurs beneath about 18 percent of Utah, only 4 percent of the state has minable reserves. Utah's coal fields are mostly bituminous. Current coal production in Utah is largely by underground mining, making Utah unique among the coal-producing states. Most coal seams are more than 8 feet thick. Utah's coal resources are about 6.3 billion tons, 1.3 percent of the national reserve. Most of Utah's coal resources are held by the Federal Government and Indian tribes and are mined under lease. The climate of the Utah coal region is characterized by hot, dry summers and cold, relatively moist winters. Normal precipition varies from 6 inches in the lower valleys to more than 40 inches on some high plateaus. The growing season ranges from 5 months in some valleys to less than 3 months in mountainous regions. These extreme climatic conditions make reclamation difficult. Utah gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved January 21, 1981. Full program approval was obtained March 7, 1983. The Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 3,1983. A Federal Lands Cooperative Agreement was signed in March 1987; Utah performs all enforcement activities and some permitting activities on federal lands.

An economic analysis of underground gasification of coal, based on experimental results obtained by the Bureau of Mines, indicates that a gas suitable for use in a power plant might be produced for approximately $.62 to $.77 per million British thermal units. This estimate does not include cost of land purchase. The gasification experiments were conducted in a 3-ft. seam of high volatile A bituminous coal. The major factors which can influence a change in operating costs are height of overburden, power costs, thermal efficiency, and the gasification air inlet pressure. The limits of inflammability (explosive limits) of combustibles are not only of theoretical but also of practical importance, because many industries at one time or another contend with explosive mixtures of combustible gases or vapors in their manufacturing processes. At present many new organic compounds are being manufactured, transported, and used in huge quantities which a few years a ago were only laboratory curiosities.

This paper is one of a series being prepared for the United States Bureau of Mines to disseminate technical information retarding the methods used in mining nonmetallic minerals. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. This paper deals particularly with methods and costs of dredging, classifying materials, and transportation at the plant of the Ross Island Sand & Gravel Co. of Portland, Ore. An attempt has been made to fit assay data from an underground copper deposit to a three-dimensional polynomial surface as a means of expressing assay points in terms of their mine coordinates by a mathematical equation. The resulting equation was evaluated to predict the grade trend of the deposit. Although the fit obtained by this initial experiment is not considered accurate enough to provide good predictions about the deposit, the methodology is presented in this preliminary report to show the potential usefulness of the technique in mineral deposit evaluation. The technique also should be useful in determining the grade of blocks of ore for production scheduling and blending problems in open pit operations. Further experimentation is needed to increase the reliability of the computer program, to increase the precision of the method, and to make the solution more flexible for use on other mineral deposits.

Because of U.S. dependency on imported critical metals, the Bureau of Mines has conducted research to evaluate the possible substitution of nitrided low-alloy steels for higher chromium-containing alloys. The corrosion data for nitrided steels are limited primarily to the Soviet literature. The objective of this study was to determine the corrosion properties of six commercially nitrided low-alloy steels in a 5-wt % NaCl solution at pH 4. Weight-loss tests indicated that, in deaerated test solutions, most of the nitrided steels were less corrosion resist-ant than nontreated steels. However, electrochemical tests indicated that under more oxidizing conditions, nitrided materials are converted to a passive state with a significantly reduced corrosion rate. Elec-trochemical tests performed in an aerated environment confirmed the passivity of the samples in an oxidizing environment.
