The Mitchell and Berea sands were cored and logged in Fred Link well K-l, Lower Newport field, Washington County, Ohio. Core and reservoir fluid analyses and available field data were studied to determine if these sands could be successfully waterflooded. The results of the study indicate that there is insufficient oil in place to form an oilbank in either the western Mitchell pool or the Berea sand, and that no commercial recovery of oil by waterflooding can be obtained in these reservoirs.

The Bureau of Mines examined a low-, a medium-, and a high-volatile Pennsylvania anthracite by densimetric methods using four mesh si.s of each anthracite. Using high-pressure mercury the macropore volumes and distributions of these pore volumes determined, densities in mercury were calculated, and specific pore vo1.r. ware obtained from these mercury densities in conjunction with helium densities. The helium densities were also used with the ultimate analyses of these anthracites in calculating structural parameters by statistical densimetric methods. The effect of 106 or 108 rads of gamma irradiation in the presence of air and in vacuum upon the properties studied with two mesh sizes of each anthracite. Results of the statistical densimetric method seem to show some breakdown of condensed ring structural units at the lower irradiation level, with subsequent polymerization at the longer period of gamma irradiation. The structural parameters obtained also indicated that in going from high- to low-volatile anthracite, either the number of condensed rings per structural unit increased, or the degree of polymerization increased.

Soapstone is the term applied to an impure, massive, soft rock with a greasy feel. It is of variable composition, consisting chiefly, however, of talc, tremolite, and chlorite. Although limited quantities of soapstone are used as building material, in fireplaces, and in the manufacture of laundry tubs, sinks, laboratory-table tops, and-oven and furnace blocks, the principal part of the production is ground for use in roofing paper, insecticides, and as a filler in asphaltic paints.

For nearly 30 years the Bureau of Mines has contended that mine explosions can be prevented and has pointed out to the industry ways and means by which they could be avoided. The record of co2l-mine explosions • during the past fiscal ?Bar bears out the :Bureau1s contention, inasmuch as fewer men were killed by coal-mi~e e:xplosions in the United States during that year than in :gi_y corresponding 12 months in the history of coal mining in the United States, insofar as records are available; and more than a year has elapsed since·a major explosion (in which five or more men were killed) has occurred, this being t.1-J.e first continuous 12- month period without a major coal-mine explosion disaster in the United States in more than 60 years. The methods of preventing mine e:iiplosions are well known to experienced, well-informed persons cngnged in coal mining. Despite this knowledge, many coal-mine operutors continue to use practices and methods that they should know have resulted in countless explosions, and mine workers persist in following past procedure or in breaking safety rules and practices almost certain eventually to result in disaster. ' Virtually all explosions are the result of human failure, such as carelessness or neglect by officials or workers or others. These human failures can be corrected chiefly by ed.ucation and proper and adequate supervision and strict discipline. In some instances mine officials are ·lax, careless, poorl~• informed, and often incompetent; end in many instances miners have repulsed the introduction of known preventive methods because of sheer obstinacy, ignorance, heedlessness, or possibly fear that the operator was trying to o'bta.in some unfair adva.,.'1. tago or would neglect some other phase of accident or e,:plosion prevention. The Bureau of fines has tested a portable microseismic processor recorder at the Galena Mine, Wallace, ID, both in an environmentally controlled enclosure and, with minimal protection, in a working area of the mine. In both trials the device demonstrated effective and reliable data acquisition capabilities.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report describes various fire-fighting resources available to the mining industry and examines the fire preparedness of four western coal mines. Information regarding fire-fighting equipment indicates that an inadequate maintenance program may cause component failure of fire extinguishers, damage to waterhoses is usually a result of improper care, and foam may be a convenient means of conveying water to the fire. Performance data relative to water nozzles (throw distance) and specific practices to improve the state of preparedness in many of these areas are discussed. Studies also indicated that a high-expansion foam plug, will travel down an entry, with a 1% rise in elevation, 207 m (680 ft) before a plywood stopping separating the generator and plug failed. The advance rate of the foam plug decreased when the entry is dry, requiring more foam concentrate and as the foam spread further down the entry. An examination of the mines showed state-of-the-art monitoring systems were common at the minesites. Fire safety was also stressed, including early detection and rapid response of the miners to evacuate the mine. However, the mines placed little emphasis on performance of water nozzles, or personal protective clothing for the underground firefighters.

This report summarizes the results of research into the areas of the fragmentation and entrainment of Airborne Respirable Dust (ARD). The objectives of this program were four-fold: first, to review the present state of knowledge regarding ARD; second, to expand this state of knowledge through the identification of hypothetical microscopic mechanisms by which the coal is fragmented and the dust becomes entrained; third, to specify the informational requirements to verify or nullify these hypotheses; and fourth, to relate experimental techniques that will produce that required information. Additionally, insights are provided regarding potential methods of extraction and/or treatment which may reduce the concentration of ARD.

[The opinion is general among smelter operators that magnetite formed in the converter and reverberatory furnace has much to do with the loss of copper in the slag. Its action appears to be due in part to its relatively high infusibility, chemical stability, and specific gravity, as a result of which it tends to fern a layer of highly viscous. "magnetite mush" between slag and matte. Particles of matte which might otherwise settle out of the slag are unable to pass through this layer. Maier and, Van Arsdale4 have shorn that the inclusion of prills of matte in the slag is also at times very probably due to chemical reaction between magnetite and the constituents of the matte. In smelter control and in envy laboratory study of slats the determination of magnetite is therefore a matter of some importance. The difficulties in the ray of making such a determination with any accuracy are rather obvious. Iron may occur in slog as ferric oxide, magnetite, various intermediate oxides, sulphides, silicates, as free metal, and in solid solution of several of these substances. Even of only the total iron content is to be determined, accuracy can be obtained only by painstaking and time-consuming separation ions from interfering elements. The determination of ferrous, ferric, and free iron in the presence of each other is a difficult matter under the most favorable conditions, and linen present in a slag the difficulties are increased by the refractory nature of the sample, by the presence of sulphides, and by ouch elements as vanadium and molybdenum.]

As part of safety and stability studies at three underground mines in the United States, researchers installed earth pressure cells and embedment strain gauges in cemented rockfill to measure stress and strain changes as mining progressed and the rockfill was loaded. Data from these instruments were used to calculate the in situ modulus of the rockfill for two of the mines. A three-dimensional numerical model of a cemented rockfill cap was validated with data from extensometers anchored in the mine roof and sill; this model was then used to estimate deformation modulus at the third mine because the earth pressure cells and embedment strain gauges recorded negligible changes. Rockfill binder used at these mines ranged from 4 to 8 per cent of the dry components by weight, the water-to-cement ratio was from 0.42 to1.0, and the largest aggregate size in the three mixes ranged from 5 to12 cm (2 to 4.7 in). The range of the calculated in situ deformation modulus values was large, but as expected, it was bracketed by modulus values for cemented tailings and roller-compacted concrete with similar cement contents and water-to-cement ratios. Accessory metals, although valuable resources, present possible environmental concern in the smelting of base metals. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has undertaken research to define the chemistry involving these metals. Arsenic in copper smelting is the first to be investigated. Roasting, the first step in many copper smelters, was chosen for initial investigation because of the potential for arsenic removal in this primary process. Simple, static-bed, vaporization experiments were devised to obtain the data in this study. Ancillary transpiration and mass spectrometry were also used to delineate conditions necessary for arsenic volatilization from a roaster feed. For nearly complete arsenic removal, a temperature of 650°-700° C, a reducing atmosphere including carbon monoxide, and a source of sulfur were found to be essential.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the use of dilute polymer in brine solutions to increase the efficiency of air in gas flooding model oil reservoirs. Slugs (0.23 pore volume) of 500 ppm polyacrylamide were injected into a model, consisting of a high- and a low-permeability core, that had been previously gas flooded to residual oil. Gas flooding was then resumed. Of the total gas volume injected, the percentage entering the high-permeability zone was greatly reduced after polymer injection but remained unchanged when slugs of water without polymer were used.

This report summarizes the results of metallurgical investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines of manganese oxide ore, averaging 23 to 25 percent manganese, stockpiled at the Butte-Philipsburg depot of General Services Administration (GSA). The oxide ores were stockpiled in two general classifications, straight oxide ore and mixed oxide-carbonate ore. Continuous-circuit flotation tests at the Albany (Oreg.) Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau of Mines showed that each of these ore types could be concentrated by an oil-emulsion scheme to produce a concentrate that could be sintered to meet program specifications. About 88 percent of the manganese was recovered in the concentrate from the straight oxide sample, with the sintered concentrate containing 48 percent Mn. The sintered concentrate from the mixed oxide-carbonate sample contained 41 percent Mn with a recovery in the concentrate of 95 percent.

A number of highly instrumented free fall tests were performed on an arrestment system for a man cage in a vertical shaft. Tests were conducted in the U.S. Bureau of Mines free fall test tower at the Colorado School of Mines. A single tooth safety dog was used to stop on 4x6-in. Keruing (Phillipine mahogany) wet and dry wood guides. The safety dog had a penetration depth of 1 in., an adjustable width from 1-1/2 to 2-1/4 in., and a tooth angle of 80 deg. Twenty-seven free fall tests were performed covering a range in weights from 3-1/2 to 10-1/2 tons, hoisting velocities from 850 to 1350 feet per minute. Average g loads were measured from a low of 0.6 to a high of 3.4. The electronic instrumentation included piezoelectric and seismic mass accelerometers, strain gages on structural and mechanical elements, load cells in the guides, and distance measuring. Computer analysis was used to correlate with experimental measurements used to calculate stress. A statistical analysis gave no indication that the velocity or area affected the wood crushing stress. The instrumentation revealed a chatter occurring during the stop as shown by the accelerometers, strain gages, and load cells. Additional work is required to analyze this newly discovered phenomenon. The chatter imposes loads much higher than the average g load.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fifth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in Volume I. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion of that area.

Systematic sampling, in reconnaissance fashion, of the continental shelves of the United States to define favorable areas of offshore mineral deposits, is one of the long-range marine mineral; programs of the U.S. Department of the Interior. In mid-1966 the Department of the Interior launched its Heavy Metals Program to stimulate domestic output of gold which is in serious short supply. The program is jointly conducted by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines.

Eight interburden handling concepts are developed for multiple seam area mine stripping operations in central and western United States. They are based on data gathered and analyzed during field surveys, literature reviews and visits to state regulatory agencies in five states. It is concluded that improvement of reclamation practices through selective interburden handling techniques is possible at lower operating costs than currently incurred. Specific multiple seam mining systems are discussed in this report.

To initiate this project a critical evaluation of the pre-sent phosphate mining industry in the Western phosphate field was conducted. Mines were visited, mine operators were interviewed and pertinent literature studied. Three phosphate mining enterprises were reviewed and mining cost estimates prepared. The report discusses the present state of phosphate processing, rock alteration and location. New ideas and concepts are proposed to improve the recovery of phosphate rock from the Phosphoria formation. The report evaluates two variations to the present phosphate open pit mining methods, which were developed to improve the economics of mining phosphate and to better accomplish necessary reclamation and accelerate the time for environmental recovery. A material handling system using conveyor haulage will eliminate the need for trucks. Terrace haulback utilizes safety benches to haul and dispose of waste in the mined out pit. Ore will be removed from the pit via an inclined, cable-supported mobile conveyor.

The last previous Bureau of Mines publication relative to details of permissible methane detectors (Bulletin 331, published in 1930) describes detectors of four different types, namely flame, combustion, catalytic, and a combination Weatstone-bridge and catalytic type in which catalytic action at the surface of a platinum filament when in methane causes a change in the temperature and resistance of the filament, thus unbalancing the bridge circuit and giving a reading proportional to the methane concentration. Three detractors of the latter type have been approved since 1930. A brief description of each follows: U. C. C. Detector Approval No. 902, covering the U. C. C. indicating detector, as described in Bulletin 331, was extended. January 27, 1930, to cover important changes in design that permit checking the calibration of the detector at any time whether in gas or fresh air. Essential features of the detector are shown in figure 1.

As a part of the general chromite investigation in California designed to aid In the production of chromite during the recent war emergency, the Bureau of Mines explored the Coggins property in Siskiyou County, Work by the Bureau in cooperation with the Federal Geological Survey began in October 1942 and was concluded in March 1943. This report presents a brief history of the mine, outlines the physical features of the district, describes the deposits) and explains the work completed by the Bureau of Mines, Table 1 shows the analysis of diamond drill-hole samples. The logs of drill holes are in the appendix.
