The Windigo Theilson RARE II area has a low mineral potential. There are no mines or claims in the area. The only observed results of mining activities were five prospect pits near Tolo Mountain. Samples from these pits contained no significant assays. The study area contains more than 190 million cu yds (145 million m3) of cinders in 17 cones. Development of these cinders is unlikely because their locations are remote, and other sources supply area needs. The Geological Survey has classified the area as prospectively valuable for geothermal resources. However, there has been no geothermal exploration activity.

Laboratory crushing experiments were conducted on a range of low- to high-volatile bituminous coals to investigate the various factors influencing airborne respirable dust (ARD) generation. This research was conducted to identify the principles of ARD liberation from the coal product. Five U.S. bituminous coals were uniformly prepared and processed through a double roll crusher located in a low-velocity wind tunnel. Experimental factors studied included inherent coal seam constituents, coal grind ability, specific energy of crushing, product size characteristics, dust cloud electrostatic field, and specific ARD generated. The results of this investigation indicate that a combination of several factors are associated with ARD generation. One factor is the effect of coal rank, described by the inherent moist fuel ratio, on the product size characteristics, defined by Schuhmann size function parameters. Another key factor is the effect of air dry loss(ADL) moisture in the coal seam on the breakage-induced electrostatic field of airborne dust. The effect of these factors is that different percentages of <10-m coal particles are dispersed as ARD. A discussion of electrostatic field principles, coal ADL, and its effect on ARD generation is presented.

The geology, mining, beneficiating, types of products, and costs in terms of percent of total costs and of labor, power, and supplies of two crushed-limestone operations in Madison County, Iowa, are described in this paper. The operations are basically similar, differing in refinements in mining, product types, and markets. The operations are comparable as to personnel and as to weighted costs in terms of percent of total costs and in terms of man-hours, power, and sup-plies. The waste-to-stone stripping ratio is 1 to 0.8 at both operations, the powder factor is 0.29 pound of explosives per ton of stone, and daily production is 95 tons per man-shift. Both companies use crawler-mounted diesel shovels for loading, truck transportation, wagon drills, and dry screening.

In situ stope leaching is an innovative mining system that reduces the surface impacts of conventional underground mining. As in any leaching operation, stope leaching requires hydrologic site characterization and control of leaching solutions. Several tracer tests, using sodium chloride (NaCl) in various concentrations, were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in an underground experimental stope to simulate a leaching environment. The tests were conducted in fractured crystalline rock that was partially water-saturated. As tests progressed, the surrounding fractures became more saturated. A predominant flow direction away from the stope was found during testing. Testing procedures, results, and a remediation plan for in situ leaching based on field observations are presented in this report.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated a method of using inert gas to prevent the formation of explosive gas mixtures in auger highwall mining of coal. A combination of gasoline and diesel engine exhaust gases was introduced into the auger drill hole using a short section of pipe located at the collar. Gas samples were taken and analyzed on-site with infrared detectors for oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane, and carbon monoxide. Evacuated bottle samples were also taken and analyzed by gas chromatography in the laboratory. These gas results were analyzed for explosibility. Coal samples from various depths were used to obtain the gas content of the coal using the modified direct method. Personal expo- sure to carbon monoxide was also monitored. The highest methane level observed was 9.55%. The levels of inert gas (carbon dioxide and nitrogen) were sufficiently high to prevent any ignition of the methane. Results showed that for all conditions during mining, gas concentrations were nonexplosive. The gas content of the coal was about 0.30 cm3/g. The maximum personal time-weighted average Sample for carbon monoxide was 20 ppm. This system provides a safe, inexpensive, simple method for preventing explosions during auger mining.

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted a demonstration project to reclaim 125 acres of abandoned strip-mined land in Lackawanna County, Pa., for public recreational, historical, and educational use as a park. The Bureau was involved in the development of the general site plan, and engineered and supervised the basic land rehabilitation. The park&apos;s Facilities include outdoor recreational activities, picnic grounds, children&apos;s play areas, primitive overnight camping, and winter sports. A major attraction is the Anthracite Museum constructed by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission The project may serve as a prototype for reclaiming existing and future surface-mined lands.

A mineral survey of 19,350 acres of the Gooding City of Rocks Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs) in the north-central Snake River Plain was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1984. No formal mining districts are known in or near the study area. Forty-two placer claims within and adjacent to the study areas cover the Clover Creek diatomite deposit. Minor production from four pits was reported by the owners. The diatomaceous sediments are underlain by dacitic welded tuff and capped with basalt. Five exposures or blocks totaling 416 million tons of the diatomaceous material comprise the Clover Creek deposit; four of the blocks are in the study areas, out are predominantly covered by basalt. The North Clover block, just west of the areas, is only partially capped, and could be mined by open pit methods on the western flank of the exposure. The minable wedge contains an inferred marginal reserve of 35 million tons of diatomite possibly suitable for filter aid, filler, insulation, and other applications. At a production rate of 150,000 tons/year, total mining and milling costs for high-grade filter aid diatomite would be about $100/ton. The deposit is classed as marginal because products from this deposit may be inferior to currently marketed diatomite products. The market is well supplied by developed sources.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health re­searchers conducted a study to investigate the human response issues related to wearing a self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR). The goal was to develop training to educate miners on what they could expect from their units during an escape. Subjects included miners who had experience wearing SCSRs, manu­facturers, and researchers. Results identified nine key areas of concern: (1) starting the unit, (2) unit heat, (3) induction of coughing, (4) unit taste, (5) difficulty in breathing while wearing the unit, (6) quality of the air supplied, (7) nose clips, (8) goggles, and (9) the behavior of the breathing bag. In addition, researchers reviewed the literature on human response under duress. This article describes the expectations training program, which comprises the findings of the SCSR study and what is known about the normal human response in an emergency. The authors present background on SCSRs and the SCSR switchover procedure mandated in the recent federal Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006, which provided the impetus for the expectations training. The Greenburg-Smith impinger was developed at the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the United States Public Health Service in 1922 in the course of an investigation of dust-sampling instruments available at that time. Although it is not used extensively outside of the United States, it is now soused in this country to collect samples for the determination of any dustiness, and most of the information correlating degree of dustiness with physiological effect has been obtained by the impinger method. The chief disadvantages in the use of the regular impinger, especially in mines and other places accessible with difficulty, are its bulk weight, and power requirements. It requires a source either of electricity or of compressed air, which necessitates connections and extension of existing supply lines to each sampling point; the only alternative is the use of a relatively large pump hand-operated with considerable effort.

TiC14, AIC13, and VC14 were coreduced simultaneously via a Kroll-type magnesium reduction to form an alloy sponge as part of a research effort by the Bureau of Mines to produce titanium alloy powder. Reduction tem-peratures of 750°, 850°, and 950° C, a range of chloride feed rates from 34 to 152 Ib/(ft2·h), and crucible diameters of 7-3/4 and 10-1/4 in were tested. Microprobe analyses using a 40-um-diam spot showed no effect on alloy microhomogeneity (distribution of Al and V in the Ti, considered critical as a powder property), due to changes in process variables within these ranges. Statistical analysis of these data for alloy sponge indicated greater variation in the chemical composition (AI and V) than that found in commercial Ti-6Al-4V plate or Plasma Rotating Electrode Process (PREP) powder. Therefore, a one-step approach to pow-der, such as grinding the Ti alloy sponge, would not produce a powder product of acceptable chemical homogeneity. An approach that homoge-nized the sponge, such as with a melting step, would produce an accept-able powder product with respect to chemical homogeneity.

This report is in three parts. The first part presents a review of theoretical models which have been developed to study removal operations for various types of materials. In the second part, a brief summary is given of coal cutting research. The majority of this work has been carried out in Britain using chisel type bits rather than the conical picks which are in general use in this country. However, a comparison of specific energies measured for conical picks in the laboratory and in the mine shows very encouraging correspondence. In the third part of the report, analytical models for coal cutting by picks are suggested. An extension of the British "tensile breakage" theory, developed for chisels, is given for picks. The role of crushing and cutting in coal removal is discussed as a theory which combines the two processes is shown to give reasonable predictions for specific energy requirements. Finally, directions in which the existing theory could be improved are presented and the need for further research is emphasized.

This is the final report on a research program to develop a pilot plant gasifier for slagging gasification of lignite at high pressures and to obtain process data under various operating conditions. An operable pilot plant was developed, and the test results show that lignite is well suited for the process. Tests were run at pressures from 80 to 400 psig, and the results indicated that pressure had little effect on gas composition or the material requirements per unit gas produced. Gas production rates as high as 26,000 scfh/sq ft of reactor area were obtained at 300 psig, but limitations on auxiliary equipment prevented full-capacity operation at 400 prig. In several tests lignite having a 37-percent moisture content and 2,500° F ash-fusion temperature was successfully gasified. Refractory materials were found to have a short life in contact with high-temperature slag, and a water-cooled taphole was developed. Exploratory tests with coking coal were unsuccessful.

Conservation in the utilization of any product is always subject to improvement if the composition and properties of the product are known. Petroleum is no exception, and knowledge of the characteristics of crude oils, even when given on the broad basis of routine type analyses has proved useful to chemists, engineers, and geologists in improving pro- duction and utilization of petroleum. For a quarter of a century the Bureau of Mines has sought to provide such information regarding crude oils and has analyzed many samples of petroleum by its standardized rou- tine method. Most of these analyses have been published, sometimes in special compilations, other times in connection with reports of research on petroleum. This report is a finding index for all analyses published up to January 1, 1948. The routine method used for all these analyses is basically the same as that described by Dean, et al.. Briefly, the procedure consists of testing by standard methods, small samples of a crude oil for gravity, sulfur, color, and viscosity, and of distilling a sample of the crude oil by a standardized procedure and determining certain properties in the sep- arated fractions and residuum. Careful records are made during the proce- dure, and the distillation data obtained are used to calculate the approx- imate amounts of products present in the sample such as percents of gas- oline, kerosine, gas oil, and lubricants. The data obtained are recorded on a standard analytical report form. An analysis of a sample of typical midcontinent crude oil is shown in table 1. Compilation of these analyses, sometimes in tabular form and usually for specific geographic areas, are published from time to time. Analyses are often shown in connection with other studies, such as engineering field reports. A system capable of monitoring a mine electrical power system to detect incipient electrical component failure could significantly improve power system safety and availability. The U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a contract with The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) to establish the theoretical and technical framework for such a system. This report briefly outlines the contract, reviewing related Bureau and Penn State work prior to its award, and describes support work carried out by the Bureau. The main focus of the report is on research efforts by Penn State and subsequent results. An existing algorithm for incipient-failure detection and classification was studied, and recommendations are made to improve its performance. In addition, mathematical models of cable-connected motor systems and deteriorating motors were developed and implemented on computers. These models and laboratory tests were used to study and document relationships between component deterioration and electrical terminal effects. The project was supported by the U.S. Navy and the nature of its interest in the application of failure prediction techniques is also included.

Alpha silicon nitride fibers , Si3N4 , were successfully grown in graphite crucibles by a new method utilizing silicates and silicon ( S in equations below) as sources of silicon and using carbon , aluminum , and silicon as reducing agents (R in equations below ) . The basic reaction mechanism is believed to be generally as follows : 1,300 - 1,500 ° C S + R + N₂ SiO + RO + N₂ › 3Si0 + R + 2N₂ _1,300 - 1,500° C 3RO + Si¸N • ( 1 ) ( 2 ) A build - up of coatings on the solid raw- material particles hindered the evolution of silicon or silicon monoxide vapor and thereby slowed down further formation of silicon nitride fibers . Free oxygen in the crucible caused the formation of amorphous silicon dioxide ( SiO2 ) fibers . This problem was solved by passing , entering , and exiting gases through layers of lump graphite inside the reaction vessel . The silicon nitride fibers grew best around 1,400 ° C. Nitrogen flow rates from 4 to 6 liters per minute were adequate . The fiber widths were generally only a few microns whereas their lengths sometimes reached one - quarter inch or more . Chemical and X- ray analyses indicated that bulk fiber samples were usually 80 to 90 percent Si3N4 . The fibers had good oxidation resistance to about 1,260 ° C. Thermal shock resistance was excellent . Electrical resistance was determined .

To be approved for use in underground coal mines in the United States, explosives and blasting devices must pass certain safety tests prescribed by the Federal Bureau of Mines. These tests are described in Schedule 1-G4/ (explosives) and Schedule 26A5/ (blasting devices). An explosive or blasting device that passes the appropriate tests is placed on the active permissible list. As this list is subject to continuous revision, it has been the practice of the Bureau of Mines to publish periodically the names of explosives and blasting devices that have been added to the active list, as well as those that have been transferred to the inactive list; changes in brand names also are reported. The present circular gives all explosives and blasting devices on the active permissible list as of December 31, 1957, and shows all changes, additions, and transfers in that list between December 31, 1951,6/ and December 31, 1957.

The samples tested were taken from commercial shipments and have been selected to represent the principal coal producing areas of the country . In the fall of 1933 a new discovery of gold was made in the old Mojave mining district of California about 70 miles north of Los Angeles. It led to mining operations that have surpassed in their results all reasonable expectations and are of exceptional promise for the future. In less than 3 years, exploration has opened up a number of veins, from some of which a substantial amount of high-grade ore has been shipped, while a large tonnage of milling ore has been disclosed. Two mills, operating on ore averaging better than $12 a ton, will probably produce more than a million dollars worth of gold in 1936, and a considerable increase of their output in the following year is anticipated. While continuance of these operations for a number of years is already assured by ample reserves of ore, future discoveries of still other veins are reasonably possible, as occurrence of gold throughout the volcanic rocks of the district is widespread and the veins now being mined showed little to attract attention at the surface.
