The Bureau of Mines analyzed the effects of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon on the tensile properties of electrorefined vanadium in terms of the Petch equation. The effects of the different impurities and grain sizes on the yield and flow stress between 2730 and 770 K were studied. For specimens of like composition, the values of the Petch parameters 01 and ky obtained by two different methods, extrapolation and grain size, were nearly the same. For high-purity electrorefined vanadium, the 01 value at 2730 K was 10,300 psi (5,150 psi shear). The 01 values for this metal at 1950 and 2730 K were lower by factors of 3 to 4 than for three less pure samples of commercial vanadium metal of equivalent grain size. Nitrogen was more effective than oxygen in increasing 01' the increase being about twice as much for the same impurity level. Carbon produced a slight increase in 01 up to 0.024 percent and then a gradual decrease in 01 to 0.11 percent, the maximum carbon content studied. The corresponding ky values followed the same trend in regard to oxygen and nitrogen additions, whereas the addition of carbon produced no variations at either temperature. Dislocations in vanadium are anchored by carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen with increasing firmness in that order. The high purity of electrorefined vanadium was confirmed by low yield stress and high ductility throughout the low temperature range. The metal also exhibited profuse twinning with high ductility at 1230 and 770 K. The effective surface energy for fracture, y, was found to lie between 3.3 and 3.6 x 1()4 erg cm-2?

The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to ""disseminate information concerning these subjects in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.""In accordance with this directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau publications. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes reports and articles published during the period January I, 1965, to December 31, 1969. It supplements the 50-year list of Bureau publications issued from July 1, 1910, to January I, 1960;' the 50-year list of articles by Bureau authors published outside the Bureau from July 1, 1910, to January I, 1960;3 the 5-year list of Bureau publications and articles from January I, 1960, to December 31, 1964.' It includes all the material in the four annual lists of Bureau publications and articles from January 1, 1965, to December 31, 1968, as well as the Bureau publications and articles for 1969."

Transportation charges for mineral commodity movements in western Oregon and western Washington were determined mainly by a stratified random sample canvass of producers. Total 1965 mineral production value for this area was $53.3 million; the cost or charge to move this production from the mine to the consumer or to the point of consumption was determined to be an additional $38.7 million. Thirty seven companies were contacted as a sample out of a total population of 349; the statistically expanded sample production value deviated 3.6 percent from that obtained by the Bureau's annual canvass. The agreement between the sample results and the canvass totals demonstrated the effectiveness of the sampling method for obtaining data with a predesigned level of accuracy. For comparison, the north-central Idaho and western Montana area was studied, A random sample experiment was designed, but because of the dominance of a few major companies, a random sample technique would have required more visits to producers than if only the larger firms were contacted. Eighty-four percent of the 1966 mineral value ($198.6 million) was accounted for by interviewing 27 firms out of a total population of 199. Total transportation costs or charges for the area were $26.7 million. The significant difference observed between the relationship of minerals production value and transport charges between the two areas investigated can be attributed to the difference in the minerals produced. The western Oregon and western Washington region is a nonmetals-producing area as opposed to the predominance of metals production in the Idaho-Montana region.

"Field inspections and data relative to the use of rubber-sheathed trailing cables in mines show that much cable is ruined or its probable life shortened by being overheated in service.The length of cable required to make connection from a source of supply to a machine at the face workings may be 100 to 500 feet. As a rule, the cable is carried on a reel and unreeled as required; and thus in most cases soma of the cable is not removed from the reel. The overheating generally occurs in that part of the cable which is left on the reel.Factors that determine the heating of trailing cables are:1. The size of the conductors in the cable.2. The maximum energy to be supplied through the cable, based upon the horsepower of the motor and the degree to which the motor is loaded.3. The voltage of the supply and the variation of the voltage at the receiving end.4. The time length of current flow and whether continuous or intermittent.5. We all know that safety consciousness is the most potent factor in the prevention of accidents. Safety consciousness may be defined as awareness of hazard and alertness to danger, which controls every action of an individual through his desire to remain alive and uninjured.

This paper presents the results of research undertaken to recover titanium and columbium by low-temperature chlorination of low-grade columbium-bearing ilmenite concentrates, and to simultaneously remove chlorinated impurities from the volatile chlorides without resort to distillation. Coke-reduced ilmenite was chlorinated at 400° to 500° C., and the resulting TiC14 was free of most impurities before condensation. A heated purification column was used wherein various packing materials reacted chemically or physically with the impurities which passed through them in the vapor phase. A nearly water-white TiC14 product was obtained directly. The principal impurities in the titanium tetrachloride were: 0.02 percent Fe, 0.01 percent V, 0.05 percent A1, 0.04 percent Si, and 0.07 percent Cb. This is a less pure product than commercial TiC14. Most of the columbium was recovered as crude CbC15, requiring further refining.

The Bureau of Mines compared the effects of surface-active chemicals with those of pure water on core-drilling rock and quartz and on fracturing quartz. The objectives were to determine if these chemicals assist drilling and fracturing rock and if zeta potential control was worth pursuing as an aid to full-scale drilling. All tests were performed in the laboratory. No significant increases in drilling rates were observed for 1 to 10,000 ppm Al (as AlC13) in flushing water when drilling microcline or serpentine, nor for 1 to 10,000 ppm Mg (as MgC12) when drilling microcline or marble. Concentrations near those giving a zero zeta potential were used with microcline and marble. A 50-pct rate increase was observed for drilling quartz in 0.7 ppm oleylammonium acetate, which gave a zero zeta potential. No other concentrations were used. No effect on the tensile strength of quartz thread in 0.05 ppm Al (as AlC13), which gave a zero zeta potential, was observed. Heptanol, reported to give a zero zeta potential on quartz, did not reduce the bending strength of small quartz bars below that in water. These generally negative findings raise doubt about the usefulness of zeta potential control in full-scale drilling. The results, combined with previous studies, suggest that controlling physical properties of drilling fluids, such as viscosity, is more useful than altering chemical properties.

These schedules are revised from time to time, not only to keep in step with the progress of the industry, but also to permit much freedom of design as possible without lowering standards of safety. This circular outlines salient facts regarding the manganese-ore industry in the United States and the world. It is founded chiefly upon published information available in the literature of the subject. The Bureau of Mines has in its files additional, more detailed data upon many of the topics presented very briefly here, and will endeavor to assist the mineral industries and public by giving further information in response to individual inquiries. The Bureau will welcome comments, criticisms, and contributions of data that may assist in making later additions of this circular more accurate, or in developing more fully its mineral files pertaining to manganese. In reporting the production of manganese-bearing ores in the United States the following classification has been adopted by the Bureau of Mines: (1) Metallurgical-grade ores, under which have been classified manganese ores containing 35 percent or more of manganese used in the manufacture of iron and steel, ferruginous manganese ore containing 10 to 35 percent of manganese, manganiferous iron ore containing 5 to 10 percent of manganese, and manganiferous zinc residuum; (2) battery ore; (3) fluxing ores, under which are classified ores that may contain a few ounces of silver and are rich enough in manganese to make them valuable chiefly for fluxing purposes in nonferrous smelters; and (4) miscellaneous ores, under which are classified the ores shipped to brick manufacturers, glass makers, and manufacturers of manganese chemicals.

A laboratory method for examining crude shale oil is described. The method uses only about 500 ml. of sample and a limited number of analytical determinations. Results provide information on the general characteristics and composition of an oil and serve as a basis for comparing different oils. However, the method does not provide for direct estimates of yields of commercial products. Analyses of 10 oils produced in the United States by different methods of retorting and of 10 shale oils from commercial-scale operations in 6 foreign countries are given. The shale-oil-analysis method presented in this paper is based on and employs the same equipment as the Bureau of Mines routine method for analyzing crude petroleum. As shale oil contains groups of compounds not generally found in petroleum, several modifications of the petroleum method that might increase its suitability for application to shale oil were investigated. The modifications included in the present method take into account the apparent poor heat stability of shale oil and the presence of large quantities of olefins and nitrogen compounds.

This report is a description of equipment and test procedures used by the Federal Bureau of Mines in laboratory studies on the explosibility of dusts. The principal tests concern ignition temperature, minimum explosive concentra¬tion, minimum electrical energy for ignition, limiting oxygen concentration, pressure, and rates of pressure rise. As new materials often present unique problems, variations in the general procedure and special tests performed are indicated, The general procedures for handling a dust sample from its receipt at the laboratory to the preparation of the report are described. The repro¬ducibility of the respective tests are shown. A brief history of laboratory studies on dust explosions by the Bureau of Mines and a description of current equipment and test procedures used are presented in this report. Its purpose is to facilitate interpretation of data previously published and those proposed to be published on the numerous mineral, agricultural and industrial dusts that have been studied. Through understanding and interpretation of the laboratory data obtained for the parameters of explosibility, preventive measures can be adopted for alleviat¬ing the hazard of dust explosions arising in manufacturing and processing industries.

Cameroon's mineral industry continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. The country's economic development depended on the production and export of crude oil. Oil output was estimated to be 56 million barrels in 1984 compared with 47 million barrels in 1983 and 39 million barrels in 1982. The country's only refinery processed approximately 16,000 barrels per day of crude oil in 1984, operating at slightly over 50% capacity. This volume, however, supplied the domestic need for motor fuel and heating oils. Cameroon's economy continued to expand despite problems and setbacks stemming from the attempted coup of April 6, 1984. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth in 1984 was 6.5%, the same rate as in 1983. Offshore crude petroleum production was the chief factor in the sustained economic growth. The country also maintained a relatively strong balance-of-payments position through oil exports. Investment, ranging up to 25% of the GDP, greatly contributed to sustained growth. The oil sector contributed approximately 14% to Cameroon's GDP in both 1983 and 1984.

During the course of a study of the safety organizations of the various iron mining companies in the Lake Superior district considerable in¬ formation regarding the methods of safety inspection in use was obtained which may be of value to other companies beginning safety work or contemplat¬ ing changes in their methods. A short description of the safety-inspection methods of eleven of these companies is given in this paper, and in the appendix are illustrated a number of forms used for safety inspections by several of the companies. Most of the companies whose methods are described use few forms for formal inspection. The one long form (10) attached which is used for a general in¬ spection by the safety inspector appears to present a good method for enabling the inspector to check all branches of his inspection and to assure himself that everything has been covered. All names of companies have been deleted from this paper and from the forms because the object is to disseminate information of constructive value rather than to point out the methods of particular companies by name.

"The Marvel mines 1 and 3 of the Roden Coal Co. are located in the Cahaba field in Bibb County, Ala., nearly southwest from Birmingham, an airline distance of roughly 30 miles. The coal of the Clark seam at this point has some coking properties, but at present it is sold exclusively as a domestic and steaming coal.This paper, which is the second of a series on the washability of Alabama coals, like its predecessor dealing with the Mary Lee seam,5 contains screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of the raw slack, and slotted-screen tests showing the proportions of flaky particles in certain selected sizes; inasmuch as this coal is not used for coke manufacture, no crushing tests have been made. These data have been obtained in connection with an exhaustive study of coal preparation in Alabama, now being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal operators. As the work progresses, other papers will follow containing further data on Alabama coals and giving results obtained in preparing these coals by various methods.The only published investigative work on the Clark seam is that of Forbes,6 who gives a number of sections of this seam in Marvel No. 3 mine with proximate and ultimate analyses of face samples taken in the mine and also some analyses of delivered coal.The available information on this coal indicated that the preparation problem was one of ash reduction. In order to substantiate this information a complete analysis of the 3/4 by 3/16 inch size, and sulphur determinations and ash-fusibility tests of the float-and-sink fractions have been made; these results are given in Tables 1 and 2. As these results also indicate that the preparation problem is one of ash reduction, the tests and discussion have been devoted to that subject."

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines monitored rock mass response to mining of an experimental underhand longwall stope in Hecla Mining Co.'s LUCKY Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. This stope design, the Lucky Friday underhand longwall (LFUL), was proposed as a means of controlling rock bursting while also allowing increased mechanization of mining operations. Instruments were specifically manufactured to monitor three geomechanical factors (backfill performance, ramp stability, and rock mass response) that directly affect the success of stope design. Despite considerable difficulties with instrument installation and survival in the harsh mine environment, especially within the stope fill, sufficient information was collected to suggest that the LFUL method was successful in achieving project goals. This conclusion, in addition to favorable economic and operational evidence, led the mine to adopt the method throughout the mine. Indeed, this study and mining experience suggest that underhand longwall mining could be considered a feasible mining method for rock-burst-prone ground throughout the Coeur d'Alene District. The method for determining the effective porosity, of oil- and gas- bearing sand described in this report is a development of an earlier method devised by Bureau of Mines. The apparatus has been improved and made more convenient to use, but the procedure has been in use for many years without essential changes. A tabulation at the end of the report gives the results of more than 2,000 porosity determinations for oil sands in the fields of 13 states. A selected bibliography of articles containing descriptions and evaluations of various methods of determining porosity Is a. part of this report. The method was devised and developed at the Petroleum Experiment Station at Bartlesville, Okla., as part of the Bureau's research on fluid-energy relationships and ,on methods of improving the recovery of crude oil from underground reservoirs.

In a preliminary study of the beneficiation of iron ores conducted by the Bureau of Mines, one of the authors (T. T. Read) found it necessary to ascertain, if possible, how much effect a decrease in the silica content of an iron ore has upon the cost of making pig iron from the ore. In the beneficiation of iron ores the most important impurity to be removed is usually silica, and the amount that can be expended on a beneficiation process to reduce the silica content of the ore is obviously determined by the amount of increase in the value of the ore after beneficiation. The price that can actually be obtained for a beneficiated ore is, of course, a matter of negotiation between the seller and the buyer, but since the relative value of different grades of iron ore must be chiefly based upon the cost of making pig iron from them, an approximation as to the effect which decrease in the silica content of ore has upon the cost of snaking pig iron is an important guide in estimating what probable average gain will result from subjecting an ore to a beneficiation process. A search of the literature failed to reveal any detailed statement on this important topic, but fortunately the data are at hand to permit making an approximate calculation of the probable effect. This report disucsses the formulation of a mathematical model for the steering of a conveyor belt by a flat return idler and a troughed idler under various loading conditions. Significant parameters associated with belt training are identified. The generation of a skewed flat return idler model in terms of a steering force and self-aligning torque is presented. Development of the mathematical model for the flat return steering idler is illustrated for the case of no circumferential slip occurring and for the assumption of a bidirectional slip mechanism. Experimental results supporting the theoretical analysis is presented.

Shallow underground voids resulting from early coal mining and other resource recovery activities over the past several decades are now being recognized as a significant cause of ground subsidence problems in developing urban areas. Uncertain knowledge of abandoned coal mines also imposes potential hazards in coal excavation operations since water inundation or the release of methane gas is a pricnipal hazard when mine excavation operations break into an abandoned mine. U.S. Army requirements for an effective method for detecting and mapping subversive man-made tunnels have resulted in a surface-operated automatic earth resistivity survey system with a digital computer data processing system. Field tests aimed at demonstrating the system performance resulted in successful detection of tunnels having depth-to-diameter ratios up to 15 to 1. Under the sponsorship of the Bureau of Mines, a similar system was designed and constructed for use in the detection of coal mine workings. This report discusses the hardware and software aspects of the system and the application of the high-resolution earth resistivity method to the survey and mapping of abandoned coal mine workings. In the field tests reported, the targets of interest were both air-filled and water-filled workings.
