The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied mineral resources of the Dragoon Mountains Unit, Coronado National Forest (54,264 ac), Cochise County, AZ. This study involves literature and field investigations with a focus on mine and prospect sites, which were inventoried and mapped; maps are contained in this report. Rock-chip samples were taken from mineralized zones and from some mine dumps; assays of the 477 samples are in appendixes. Mineral deposits are genetically and spatially related to Tertiary-age granitic intrusive activity. Most metallic mineral deposits are also strongly fault-controlled. Colored marble resources (270,000 st) are valued at approximately $6.5 million, if all were to be developed and sold as landscaping material in the form of-marble chips. However, with current demand, it is unlikely that regional markets could absorb all this material. Economic modeling of copper-zinc-silver skarns suggests none would be profitable to mine and capitalize at early 1993 commodity prices, mainly due to the small estimated size of the deposits (30,000 st to 40,000 st maximum). In the entire Unit, 140,000 st of inferred subeconomic skarn resources were estimated by USBM on five different skarn trends; measured subeconomic resources are negligible. Exploration by industry, 1992, was small-scale (on 2 skarn trends and 1 auriferous fault zone).

The safety record of the coal-mining industry, both anthracite and bituminous, in 1966 was improved over that of 1965 in all general measures of injury experience. The improvement was more pronounced in the anthracite industry. The total of 10,679 disabling work injuries comprised 233 fatal and 10,466 nonfatal injuries, 26 and 692 fewer, respectively, than in 1965. The number of fatalities in 1966 was the lowest annual total since complete records were started in 1910. Similarly, the number of nonfatal injuries in 1966 was lower than in any year since 1930 when such data were first collected.

Volume II of this collection of research reports, entitled "Model Training Program," provides the framework and details for developing a tailored training program for a specific mine based upon documented human-performance deficiencies. To do this, several steps must be followed prior to program implementation: 1) background information must be gathered (database analysis), 2) direct observation of indicated problem areas should be conducted (safety sampling), and 3) separation of those deficiencies to be addressed through training from those which would be better addressed by workplace or equipment redesign (trainability assessment). Once training is determined to be the appropriate strategy for addressing the noted deficiencies, several approaches can be taken, depending upon whether the problem is related to repetitive work procedures in a predictable, a variable, or a dynamic workplace with a substantial amount of interaction between workers, equipment, and the environment. Although this volume and the subsequent seven volumes provide examples of how the training information was field tested using various strategies (for example, loss control, task training, etc.) and techniques (for example, microcomputer-based exercises, lectures, etc.), the ultimate selection of the delivery method is based on cost/benefit analysis. Therefore, the Model Training Program has incorporated a Training Cost Model as a desirable component.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Coouncil (CRC) 4/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 5/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 5/The present report presents analytical data for samples, representing the products of approximately 100 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during December 1)55 and January 194o. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. A research program to aid development of better petroleum-recovery technology is in progress at the Appalachian Experiment Station, Bureau of Mines, Morgantown, W. Va. The work is part of the overall effort of the Federal Bureau of Mines to effect true conservation of the Nation's natural resources. Knowledge of the magnitude of the interstitial water content of oil-bearing formations is important to petroleum-reservoir engineers because of the influence of water on fluid flow during oil production and because of the significance of water volume in oil-reserve evaluation. Such information on Appalachian oil-bearing formations is needed to aid in planning secondary oil-recovery projects. Generally, the interstitial water content of oil sands can be estimated by one or more of the following methods: Analysis of cores obtained with oil-base drilling fluid, electric logging, restored-state or capillary-pressure tests, centrifuge tests, evaporation tests, or mercury-injection tests.

Cable bolts are emerging as the newest ?twist? for roof support in U.S. underground coal mines. For decades cable bolts installed in underground metal mines in the United States and Canada used cement-based grouts for anchoring. The cement anchoring process, because of the time and expense for installation, made cable bolts impractical for use in coal mines. Today, the introduction of resin-anchored cable bolts provides a system more consistent with tradi­tional U.S. coal mine roof bolting practices and requirements. Expecta­tions are that the utilization of cable bolts for a number of U.S. mining applications will expand, particularly in coal mining.

An earlier Bureau of Mines report4/ reviewed and summarized all reports of investigations dealing with the coarse grained pegmatites of the Black Hills of South Dakota to dune 1951. It was proposed, and the hope was expressed in this report, that future progress in the development of the technology of the mining and beneficiation of the pegmatite deposits would be rapid enough to make it possible to issue annual progress reports. Although notable progress has been made in the treatment of pegmatite material, it has not been rapid enough to justify annual reports

At the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines, reports are prepared from time to time on results of washability studies of commercially important coal beds in the Southern Appalachian region. The investigations that provide the material for these reports are made by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the mine operators. This report records the results obtained on a sample of run-of-mine coal taken in June 1953 from the Pratt bed at the Davidson Coal Co. mine about 1 mile west of Graysville, Ala. One of the main objectives of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data in connection with the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's limited reserves of good coking coal. Such information is important from the standpoint of conservation in that it facilitates selection of preparation methods that will yield an acceptable grade of coking coal with a mini-mum of losses of coal in the rejects. The Pratt bed is one of the main sources of coking coal in the Jefferson County part of the Warrior field. This is the first time, however, that data from a complete washability study of coal have been obtained from this bed in Jefferson County. In the Graysville area, Pratt-bed coal has good coking characteristics and is used for blending with other coals in making metallurgical coal. The extent of its use in such blends is severely limited in this area, however, by the fact that it has a high sulfur content, which has not been reducible to any great extent by washery treatment.

A survey of the literature on ELF and VLF atmospheric noise has been made. Most measurements have concentrated on the vertical electric field and the horizontal magnetic field rather than the vertical magnetic field which is of interest in transmission between horizontal loops. The limited vertical magnetic field data indicates that the vertical component is generally 10 to 20 dB below the horizontal component. Three laterally inhomogeneous earth models have been analyzed for conversion of horizontal to vertical magnetic field. The rough surface model examines surface effects, the inhomogeneous thin sheet model treats volume effects, and the buried cylinder model treats localized man-made effects. All three models predict the possibility of significant conversion from horizontal to vertical magnetic field. A thin sheet model has also been used to examine transmission from a buried magnetic dipole source. It is found that the predicted fields more nearly model the measured data than does the homogeneous half-space model.

This work was conducted to determine the feasibility of producing aluminum-silicon alloys in a pit-type, three-phase electric-arc furnace. Two carbon-lined furnaces were used in the tests. The power input ranged from 120 to 240 kw. in the small furnace and from 420 to 460 kw. in the large furnace. Energy consumption ranged from 5.3 to 11.5 kw.-hr. per pound of alloy produced and electrode consumption, from 240 to 510 pounds per ton of alloy produced. A wide range of crude aluminum-silicon alloys was produced by direct smelting of clays or similar aluminum silicate raw materials, using hogged fuel or wood chips as the major source of carbon in the furnace charge, and silicon of high grade was produced by smelting quartz. The aluminum content of the aluminum-silicon alloys ranged from 15 to 55 percent. Alloys produced from a white opaline-silicate clay were relatively free of iron, titanium, and other impurities. Those produced from western fire clays and kyanite, although richer in aluminum, contained considerable amounts of impurities. The purity of the alloys depended largely on the composition of the raw materials.

A computer program has been written to simulate ground vibrations induced by multiple-hole surface blasts. The program is an inexpensive and relatively easy to use tool for predicting the principal blast vibration characteristics that determine damage and annoyance potential: peak particle velocity, frequency content and pulse duration. The program generates a complete ground motion history by superposing, at any surface position, the vibrations induced by each individual explosives charge. It requires specification of (hence allows accounting for) the blast geometry, initiation sequence (including random delays), position with respect to blast, pulse characteristics induced by each charge, and propagation laws. A methodology is outlined to determine the necessary variables either on the basis of site investigations (e.g. velocity, attenuation, pulse), or by backcalculation from measured blast vibration records. The latter procedure has been applied to blasts from two coal strip mines. Main difficulties are backcalculating individual pulses, propagation (especially dispersion) parameters and delays. A normal distribution of delays, based on published results, has been shown to influence the results and the response of a single degree of freedom structure significantly. Broadening of the wave types included and additional verifications with field results are required.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is engaged in many diverse programs for improving mine safety. Of particular interest to the Bureau are new and improved means for minimizing the hazard of fire which can be initiated by prolonged low energy electrical faults on trolley line systems. When a high energy fault occurs on a trolley line, wherein the current exceeds the magnitude normally drawn by legitimate loads, such as locomotives, then the circuit breakers at close-by power rectifier sets trip. Tripping of the breakers not only protects the equipment at the rectifier sets, but also disconnects the energy source from the fault and thereby minimizes the fire risk. However, the fault current is frequently of a level substantially below that required to trip the overload breakers. When the fault is a substantial percentage of the set level of the breakers, the energy dissipated by the fault is frequently sufficient to clear the system by rapidly burning itself clear. Such a fault is often short-lived and does not present as serious a fire risk hazard as a prolonged, much lower energy fault, wherein the energy level is too low to clear the system. The breakdown of a trolley line insulator, in which there was a 20 or 30 ampere leak, would represent such a fault or illegitimate load and a substantial fire risk.

Contractors that perform specific types of work are required to report the number of employees who work at coal mines and noncoal mines.

The U. S. Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 placed limits on the permissible concentration of airborne respirable coal mine dust. Evidence exists which suggests that the effects on health of respirable coal mine dust may depend on both host factors and dust properties other than concentration. Dust particle size, shape, density, specific surface area and chemical composition are among the dust parameters of interest in an epidemiological investigation of coal workers' pneumoconiosis and coal miner exposure to mine dust. The purpose of this investigation was to develop and demonstrate the feasibility of techniques to determine selected properties of respirable coal mine dust. An approved underground horizontal elutriator which samples air at 36 cfm was designed, fabricated and utilized in this study to collect respirable coal mine dust in three mines representing the Pittsburgh, Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning coal seams. Analytical procedures for measurement of respirable dust sample particle size, density, random projected area, total surface area and chemical composition are presented. Results of analyses of three samples collected in each mine are presented. Up to five full work shifts of sampling were required to accumulate approximately five grams of respirable coal mine dust in each sample. Statistical tests were applied to determine the significance of differences between properties of dust samples collected in the same mine and between arithmetic mean values of dust properties representing three samples collected in each mine. Occupational exposure to whole body vibration has long been associated with increased incidence of low back pain and low back injuries1. A number of studies have investigated transmissibility of seat pan vibration 5, 6. While transmissibility has been well researched, the mechanism by which vibration may induce injury has not been thoroughly studied. Winter et al. identified increased reflex response delay after vibration exposure and speculated that muscular fatigue may be the cause of this increase9. However, a mechanism has yet to be demonstrated completely. A potential mechanism that may explain the increased risk is neuromotor habituation. Muscle spindle organs have been shown in the extremities to be sensitive to muscle and tendon vibration. Rapid length changes in muscle have been shown to result in kinesthetic illusions as the regular firing of the muscle spindles is interpreted as muscle lengthening4, 7. These illusions have also been demonstrated in the paraspinal musculature2. With removal of vibration, research in the extremities has demonstrated increased positioning errors, probably due to neuromotor habituation8. In this research, it has been hypothesized that neuromotor habituation after exposure to occupational vibration will increase positioning errors. It is further hypothesized that these errors can be shown to be linked to increased reflex response time. Such increased reflex response time could, in turn, decrease spinal stability and increase low back injury risk. Methods Both positioning error and sudden load response were measured before and after exposure to 20 minutes of 5 Hz, 0.223 m/s2 RMS seat pan vibration. Subjects were asked to sit on an unpadded seat without a backrest. Throughout the whole body vibration period, subjects were instructed to put their hands on a stable hand rest and feet on an adjustable stable footrest. The subjects were instructed to assume a comfortable and relax sitting posture for the duration of the exposure. Positioning error was measured using an active-active reposition sense protocol. Electromagnetic markers (Motionstar, Ascension Tech, Burlington, VT) were used to track trunk motion. With markers attached to the skin at the T10 vertebra, the S1 vertebra and manubrium, trunk flexion (the angle from vertical of the line connecting T10 and S1) and lumbar curvature (the difference in inclination of the T10 and S1 markers) were tracked. In the reposition sense protocol, subjects were asked to maintain an upright trunk flexion and to rotate their pelvis and lumbar curvature to assume a target lumbar curvature. In the protocol subjects completed training trials, where they were asked to match their lumbar curvature using a visual display, and assessment trials, where they were asked to reproduce the lumbar curvature from memory. After two initial training trials, training trials and assessment trials were alternated for a total of 3 assessment trials. Reposition error was defined as the absolute difference between the target lumbar curvature and the lumbar curvature the subject assumed during the assessment trials.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in December 1936 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3324, under the title "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to July 31, 1936." This list included 170 brand names. Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1937 placed 35 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Ten permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present list contains 196 brand names, one explosive having been placed on the list subsequent to June 30, 1937. Reservoir oil in the Greater Aneth area, Utah, part of the Paradox basin, was studied to detect variation in oil characteristics within the reservoir and to determine its relation to age of accumulation and fluid equilibrium. At least three subsurface oil samples were obtained from each of the four largest of five field divisions comprising a producing area of 45,000 acres. Height of the oil column in the Pennsylvanian Desert Creek zone is about 230 ft. In general, the oil characteristics were found to be uniform across the area, and averages were developed for use in engineering applications. Average saturation pressure was 1,780 psia; the oil was undersaturated at the initial reservoir pressure, 2,200 psia. Variation in saturation pressure shows a lack of complete fluid equilibrium and continuing diffusion of solution gas from the main body of the reservoir to two extensions linked by narrow arms. By assuming early accumulation, the time involved in this diffusion process was calculated to be about the same as the age of the reservoir formation. Cause of the concentration of gas in the main body is attributed to differential entrapment during accumulation of oil and gas from an exterior source.

The work of the metallurgical fundamentals section during the past year, representing active experimental investigation or thermodynamic study, may be summarized as the following problem subjects: 1. Low-temperature specific-heat investigations. 2. Development of a method of concentrating gases. 3. Thermodynamic properties of metallic carbides and nitrides, 4. Production of pure chromium from chromium chlorides. 5. Thermodynamic properties of the hydrates of calcium, sulphate. While this list is not identical, with officially designated problems, due to overlapping of subjects and to new developments within specified problems, presentation upon the basis of this subdivision will best serve to review the work of the section.

"The name bentonite has been applied to a group or series of clay-like materials characterized by an alkaline oxide and alkaline earth content of 5 to 10 per cent, fine grain Giza, high absorptive powers, and usually very strong colloidal properties.Bentonite probably represents no mineral of fixed composition, and its physical properties vary considerably. The type material from Wyoming is light yellow or greenish yellow in color, but from other localities it may be cream colored, white, gray, pink, dark brown or even black. It is exceedingly fine grained, very plastic and highly absorbent. The appearance may be dull or powdeay, but a freshly cut surface usually has a waxy luster. Some varieties have the appearance of wax and may be cut into very thin, translucent shavings. The fracture of the type material is roughly conchoidal, that of other varieties is platey and shale-like, while still others have no typical fracture. Bentonite is highly absorbent; .hen wetted it will absorb more than three times its weight or seven times its volume of water. Some varieties when wetted with water expand to more than six times (some experimenters report eight times) their original volume. The wetted material is exceedingly smooth and soft and feels like soft soap. Unlike most clays, bentonite is easily fusible at a comparatively low temperature.Under a high-power microscope bentonite seems to consist of extremely small, more or less rounded, grains of uniform size, but the texture of most varieties is so fine that individual grains can not be distinguished.Some varieties when finely ground and thoroughly agitated with water will stay in suspension indefinitely, forming a translucent gelatinous mass. The addition of small amounts of acids or sodium chloride seems to have little or no tendency to raid coagulation or settling. Other varieties of similar analysis and appearance go into suspension more easily, but settle out again in a comparatively short time. It has been suggested that the material which stays in suspension indefinitely is a true colloid of the emulsion or lyophilic type."
