The purpose of this report is to document the fire experiments conducted at the Waldo Mine, NM during March 1990. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is concerned with improving and validating the predictive capability of the mine ventilation and fire simulator, MFJRE. To accomplish this, fire experiments were conducted at the Waldo Mine and temperature profiles were developed as functions of time and distance from the fire. These tests then provided data for verifying the heat transfer model in the MFIRE mine ventilation and fire simulator. An initial analysis of this data indicates that it will serve this purpose well. This report summarizes the data obtained during six fire tests at the Waldo Mine.

Poisonous hydrocyanic acid gas (HCN) is sometimes evolved in dangerous quantities from cyanides used in metallurgical and chemical operations. This gas is much used for fumigating buildings, ships, greenhouses, and such commodities as grain and cotton to destroy rats, mice and insect pests. Wherever cyanide fumes are evolved, thorough ventilation is necessary in order to render the sur- rounding air safe to breathe. Many persons have been killed by entering tanks and fumigated places too soon, and a simple test for this gas would promote safety. In view of the need for an easy method for quantitatively determining HCN in air, the three color reactions used originally for testing HCN in solution tions *** were modified and adapted. The reactions employ (1) picric acid (CH(NO2)3OH) which is yellow but combines with hydrogen cyanide to form a red- purple dye, isopurpuric acid****; (2) phenolphthalin (CH1604), which is a reduc- tian product of the phenolphthalein (CH4) used for acid indicator, this colorless substance is oxidized***** by presence of HCN to pink colored phenolph- thalin; and (3) guaiacum which oxidized from colorless to blue******. Phenolph- thalin and guaiacum require the presence of copper compounds which catalize the color formation by reduction of cupric cyanide. Quartz dust is one of the most significant ongoing health concerns in coal mining today. Since the early 1980's, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted numerous studies in underground and surface coal mines to identify the sources of quartz dust and its fundamental characteristics. This report presents data and conclusions obtained from these studies. The two most significant quartz dust sources were found to be the continuous miner excavating rock and the highwall drill operating in a rock overburden. The percentage of quartz was found to be higher in the smaller size fractions of dust when significant amounts of rock were mined by the continuous miner. Another factor theorized to affect quartz dust generation and size characteristics is the morphology of the quartz-bearing rock. Several laboratory studies were conducted to investigate capture efficiency of water spray technology and flooded-bed scrubbers with respect to the particle size of the dust. Water sprays and flooded-bed scrubbers were both found to be less efficient on smaller dust particles, and the scrubber was particularly less efficient on quartz dust. These results indicate that quartz control technology should be directed at controlling smaller sized dust particles.

The locomotives in service on the railroads of this country consume more than one-fifth of the total coal production of the United States. The amount is so large that any small saving that can be made effective in locomotive practice at once becomes an important factor in conserving the fuel supply of the nation. For this reason the United States Geological Survey gave attEmtion to the special problems of combustion in locomotive boilers. It approached this task from several different directions. The facts presented herewith constitute one series of results. In the fall of 1906 the locomotive-testing laboratory of Purdue University, at Lafayette, Ind., entered on a series of tests, one purpose of which was to determine in precise terms the degree of efficiency with which a modern high-class American locomotive utilizes the heat energy of the fuel supplied to it. The general interest in the subject, the elaborate plans which had been formulated for conducting the work, and the substantial character of the support which had been pledged to maintain it justified the Geological Survey in aiding the investigation. a The cooperation of the Survey consisted in detailing experts to assist the regular staff of the laboratory in the chemical and calorific work of the tests. These experts, working under the general supervision of the director of the Purdue laboratory, became responsible for the sampling of smoke-box gases, of the fuel used, of the cinders caught in the front end, of the sparks discharged by the stack, and of the refuse caught in the ash pan. The gas analyses were made by them at the university laboratory. The analyses of all solid samples and the calorific tests of the fuels were made at the government fuel-testing plant at St. Louis. The representatives of the Survey were not concerned with other phases of the work.

Two pieces of European Union (EU) legislation together establish requirements for protection against risks from vibration at work. The vibration directive1 specifies duties of employers to protect workers from risks from exposure to vibration; the machinery directive2, specifies duties of manufacturers and suppliers regarding the safety of machinery marketed in the EU. This paper discusses both directives and the standardisation programmes that support them. It also addresses the implementation of these requirements in Great Britain. Employers’ duties: the vibration directive This directive requires employers to assess and control risks to health and safety arising from hand-arm vibration (HAV) and whole-body vibration (WBV). Member States were required to implement the directive in national legislation by 6 July 2005. Employers are required to eliminate vibration risk at source, or reduced to a minimum. The duties include: assessing risk and exposure; planning and implementing the necessary risk control measures; providing and maintaining suitable work equipment; providing workers with information and training on risks and their control; and monitoring and reviewing the effectiveness of the risk control programme. Daily exposure exceeding a specified action value triggers a requirement for a programme of technical and organisational measures to minimise vibration exposures and the resulting risk, and the provision of health surveillance. Exposures above a specified limit value are prohibited. When conducting their risk assessments, employers are required to “assess and, if necessary, measure” the vibration exposure of workers, for comparison with the action and limit values. Vibration measurement in the workplace is not expected in all cases and the use of vibration information from equipment manufacturers is specifically mentioned. This provides a link with the machinery directive (see below). Manufacturers’ and suppliers’ duties: The machinery directive The machinery directive, first introduced in 1989, is intended to remove barriers to trade. It puts duties on manufacturers and suppliers who place machinery on the European market to design their products to eliminate or reduce risks to health and safety and to warn the user of any residual risks, providing information required for safe use (for example, operator training, maintenance and selection of consumables). This report describes the development of guidelines for design, inspection and maintenance of automatic couplers. In order to devise the guidelines, performance requirements for automatic couplers were carefully established. This was done through a comprehensive survey of coupler manufacturers and extensive observation of automatic couplers in service in a broad spectrum of mines. The capability of the couplers to withstand the demands of the mining environment in terms of strength characteristics, gathering range, curve negotiability, and other factors were all carefully evaluated. An analysis of coupler related accidents for the years 1972-1976 was carried out to provide information on the safety and reliability of existing automatic couplers. This formed an important input to the development of the guidelines. It is expected that these guidelines will be useful to coupler manufacturers for establishing designs for improved automatic couplers, and to mine operators for maintaining their couplers in a safe and good operating condition throughout their expected lifetime. This document presents the explosion-proof enclosures used severity of certification tests solutions to linear transient thermal and stress analyses of in underground mines. The results were used to assess the for enclosure windows relative to possible loads occurring in the actual mine environment. Cast iron electric light enclosures with polycarbonate and glass windows were analyzed under steady state thermal conditions (light burning) and for thermal shocks corresponding to an internal explosion (ignition of volatile mine gas) or external quenching (mine water spray system). Thermal shocks to the enclosure, caused by ignited gases or water spray, were applied via a series of load steps in the transient analysis. The temperature dependence of material I properties and of the film heat transfer coefficients were included in the model. The work demonstrates that thermally induced stresses are strongly influenced by the way the window is mounted in the enclosure. It also shows that the MSHA Thermal Shock Test, if performed on an unsupported lens (or window), produces lower stresses than the lens (or window) may experience in the mine environment.

Literature was searched and cases of alleged water well damage were investigated. Occurrence of ground water in Appalachia is primarily in low yield, fractured, water table aquifers. Four test sites were chosen based on geographic and geologic diversity. Test wells were drilled at each site and base line data on water quality, static water level, and drawdown characteristics were obtained before surface mining commenced. Blast induced ground vibrations were measured at the surface by the wells at levels up to 5.44 inches per second maximum resultant particle velocity. Measurements made at the bottom of wells indicated that vibrations were considerably attenuated at depths of 140 to 160 feet. No direct evidence of change in water quality or well performance was produced by blast vibrations, but removal of downslope support by excavation does cause lateral stress relief which permits the water-bearing fractures to become more open. This additional storage capacity causes the static water level to drop and for well-bore permeability to improve. This report describes a new method of weighing based upon observing the apparent weight of an object ill two separate pure gases. The method is presented in terms of experimental data which prove its soundness, but does not attempt to show the maximum accuracy possible with this technique. The new method incorporates the underlying principle that the apparent weight of an object is a linear function of the density of the atmosphere in which the object is weighed. The coefficients of this linear function are the true mass and volume of the object. From this functional relationship the true mass and volume of the object may be determined.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the use of close-range photogrammetry and subsequent stereo digitizing to obtain data from rock fracture roughness profiles. The photogrammetric process yielded results that were acceptable but somewhat inferior to those obtained by a mechanical profilometer. On the basis of this study, further pursuit of photogrammetry as a data collection method in mining is proposed. Fractal geometry was investigated as a means of measuring the roughness of rock fracture profiles. Four fractal algorithms were used: divider method, modified divider method, box method, and spectral method. A comparison of the methods gave ambiguous results. Brown's modified divider method provided the best means of obtaining the fractal dimension. Shear strength estimates were obtained using the parameters of the modified divider method and Myers' Z2 measure. Because of differences in results when comparing the different ways of obtaining the fractal dimension, future users of fractals in studies of rock fractures are advised to cross-check their results carefully.

Salient information on reserves, production, and consumption of fuels and energy by State is summarized in this Bureau of Mines publication. Reserve and production data are shown for each of the fossil fuels (coal, crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas) and for uranium. The consumption data of each of the major consuming sectors (household-commercial, industrial, transportation, electric power, and miscellaneous) are broken down by energy source (coal, petroleum, natural gas, hydropower, and nuclear). In addition, total energy consumption in the Nation in 1974 is compared with consumption in 1973 and 1975 (preliminary data).

"One-phase of the accident prevention program of the Bureau of Mines is the determination of the explosion hazards of various combustible gases and vapors encountered,mining and allied industries and the development of means and methods of eliminating them.Gasoline is foremost among the combustible-liquid's as to quantity used and variety of applications in industry, It is a chief contributor to the causes of fires and explosions, taking an enormous yearly toll in property damage and considerable loss of lives.The results presented in this report evaluate the effect of various gaseous inert substances, which owing to their chemical composition, should be of considerable value in the prevention of gasoline fires and explosions. The substances investigated are as follows: Nitrogen (N2), automobile exhaust gas (85 percent N2 + 15 percent CO2), carbon dioxide(CO2), dichlorodifluoromethane (CCl2F2-Freon-12), trichloremenofluoromethane (CC13F-Freon-11), and dichloromonofluoromethane (CHCl2F-Freon-21).The general term ""gasoline"" designates a combustible liquid of such characteristics as to give satisfactory operation without preheating in spark-ignition-type internal-combustion engine. It comprises a complex hydrocarbon mixture having a limiting distillation range and produced commercially by distilling or ""cracking"" crude petroleum or other various petroleum stocks. Small proportions of other substances may be incorporated in the gasoline to enhance its antiknock properties or operating characteristics in internal-combustion engines and to increase its stability during storage, transportation, and use.It is thus seen that gasoline may have rather wide variations of chemical and physical properties, and it would: appear that the results of any investigation dealing with one particular gasoline might not be applicable to other types. However, as indicated by the results given in this report, the inflammable properties of different gasolines at normal atmospheric temperatures are influenced largely the mars volatile hydrocarbons containing 5, 6, 7 carbon atoms- in the molecule, and that the heavier constituent of higher molecular weight have a minor influence on the inflammable properties at ordinary temperatures."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL), RAG Pennsylvania and Strata Control Technologies of Australia collaborated in an intensive study of ground behavior, reinforcement performance, and stress redistribution at the Emerald Mine in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The study site was a longwall tailgate subjected to a severe horizontal stress concentration. Field measurements indicated that the stresses applied to the study site nearly doubled during longwall mining, resulting in roof deformations extending to a height of 4.8m (16 ft) above the entry. A computer simulation of the field site was conducted using FLAC-2D, incorporating a broad range of rock behaviors and failure mechanisms. Comparison between the measurements and the simulation showed that the model was able to capture the most significant aspects of the roof and support system behavior, particularly, the extensive slip along bedding that created a partially destressed "softened" zone in the immediate roof. The model also showed that supplementing the normal roof bolt support pattern with cable bolts would allow the entry to survive a further 20-25% increase in the applied horizontal stress. Such information could have very practical application to the design of roof support systems for coal mines.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on cable bolt ground supports to assess their material and support properties, to provide design criteria for using cable bolt supports as roof control systems under various types of underground mining conditions, and to provide a mathematical model of cable bolt support systems. Part 1 describes laboratory studies of the support properties of cable bolts made of conventional steel cables and provides recommendations on such topics as the use of thick grouts, selection of breather tubes, and reduction of water bleeding in cement-based grouts. The studies evaluated both single and double cables; effects of different embedment lengths, water-cement ratios, and grout curing temperatures on support strength; effects of use or nonuse of breather tubes; pumpability and water-bleeding properties of grouts; and the strength properties of sand-cement grouts. Part 2 will cover the strength characteristics of birdcage cable bolt supports, epoxy-coated cables, and cables with steel buttons attached.

For several years the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington have been cooperating, in a study of coal tabling. The first pert of the work consisted of experiments using, one of the commercial-sized coal washing tables in the laboratories of the College of Mine. As an outgrowth of this work, hindered-settling classification has been successfully applied in the tabling of coal4, and several important improvements, mainly in the riffling, have been made in the table itself. Both of these developments have resulted in increasing the rapacity and efficiency of the coal-washing table. In order to facilitate further progress in this work an investigation has been undertaken to throw more light on the mechanism of table separation. This document presents a description of the results of a project aimed at producing a broad description of current mining training programs and an evaluation of their effectiveness with respect to reducing mine injuries. Aggregate training and injury data were used to evaluate the overall training effort at 300 mines as well as specific efforts in twelve categories of training course objectives. From such evaluations, recommendations were derived with particular emphasis being placed on identifying program characteristics that tend to be associated with effective training. Recommendations were also formulated with reference to role changes in industry and government interaction with respect to training programs, new or additional training programs, changes in the types of course materials and training methodologies, and recommendations concerning new areas for investigation.

The presence in the Cripple Creek district, Colo., of irrespirable gas or gases, generally known to consist mainly of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, has been recognized by members of the mining industry in that region almost since underground mining was begun there; the occurrence, origin, and possible control of these gases have been discussed in several articles cited at various places in this report. Similar gases have also been studied in other metal-mining districts, as later discussed. In March, 1925, there were two fatalities from rock-strata gases in the shaft of the Index mine, near Cripple Creek. Two men repairing the bell or signal line preparatory to reopening the shaft were lowered into irrespirable gases and died. Their bodies were recovered by rescue crews from the United States Bureau of Mines and .the Portland mine, Victor, Colo. These crews found it necessary to use oxygen breathing apparatus. In October of the same year a miner was trapped on the 6 level of the Midget mine by an influx of gases that filled the shaft to a point above that where he was working. Oxygen breathing apparatus was again used by Bureau of Mines employees, who were in the vicinity, and the man was brought out in time to save his life. These two fatalities and one near fatality seemed to show that additional investigation of the gases and methods of control might be warranted. Accordingly, field and laboratory studies were begun by the authors of this report after a visit to the district by M. van Siclen, then engineer in charge, mining research division, Bureau of Mines, and after conferences with the Mine Owners' Association of Cripple Creek and with J. T. Joyce, metal-mine commissioner of the State of Colorado. The mine operators of the Cripple Creek district and the State mine commissioner's office gave whole-hearted cooperation in this work.

This report covers the preliminary phase of an investigation of some clays and shales and other materials in North and South Dakota to determine the feasibility of lightweight -aggregate manufacture in the two States. The background of the light - weight -aggregate industry, on a national basis, and results of preliminary laboratory testing of samples of North and South Dakota clays and shales from various localities are presented herein. The countrywide search for lightweight aggregates was necessitated toward the end of the 19th century by the change in building design from thick, heavy, load- bearing walls to a framework of structural steel .beams and columns with thin walls, followed shortly by the use of reinforced concrete and structural concrete as materials for the load-supporting frame. Ordinary concrete, with sand and gravel aggregate, weighs about 150 pounds to the cubic foot. A lighter concrete was needed to relieve the dead load and make it possible to construct higher buildings or add stories to existing buildings.

A voltage regulator was added to prevent false trips with line voltage variations. 2. A Ground Wire Trap was designed to eliminate problems with parallel paths and provide spark suppression. 3. A three phase filter was designed to reduce 60 Hz leakage current. 4. A portable tester was designed to permit complete test of installed systems. 5. The design was modified to insure trip with an open ground wire in the event of a failure of any one semi-conductor component.

Underground longwall mining of coal causes large scale disturbance of the surrounding rock mass. The disturbance can increase the rock mass permeability through a reduction on the stress as well as formation of new fractures in the rock. Methane gas contained in the disturbed rock mass can migrate towards the low pressure mine workings and present an explosion hazard. This paper describes the application of a finite difference program to develop a geomechanical model that predicts permeability changes within the rock mass. The calculated permeabilities are used as input to a reservoir simulator that models methane desorption from the coal matrix, methane release from the rock layers and flow towards the mine excavations. The model also considers the basic characteristics of the mine ventilation network. The geomechanical model uses empirical relationships between fracture permeability and stress to calculate permeability changes around a longwall face. The extent of rock failure is determined using a strain softening model that considers both rock matrix and bedding plane failure. The cave rock (gob) is modeled as a compressible, granulated material. The calculated horizontal and vertical permeabilities around the longwall face are averaged and used as one of the inputs to the reservoir model. The reservoir model was developed and calibrated against records of methane flow at a study mine in southwestern Pennsylvania. Good correlation between actual gas production and model outputs has been achieved. The modeling approach provides a basis for estimating methane inflow and optimizing control measures.
