Since 1922, when a brief report3 on the production and utilization of garnet was issued by the Bureau of Mines, there have been a number of interest—in developments in the technology of that mineral. Greater activity has been displayed in mining, new mills have been erected, and more attention has been paid to improvements in milling so that a more efficient and economical recovery of garnet has been possible. These activities have resulted in larger production; therefore, attempts are being made to broaden the market for garnet abrasives, and to find new uses for the unusual combination of physical properties than this mineral possesses. The writers have recently completed a field study of the occurrence, methods of mining and milling of garnet, and the manufacture and utilization of abrasive garnet products. This preliminary report indicates the most important sources of garnet, the methods by which it is recovered, and the manner in which it is recovered, and the manner in which it is utilized.Chemical and Physical Properties.The term ""garnet"" is applied to a closely related group of minerals which crystallize in the caste forms and possess similar physical properties, although their chemical composition may exhibit greater variation. The chemical composition of the garnet group may be represented by the general formula 3R"" O.R""' 203.3S102, in which R represents the bivalent elements calcium, magnesium, in the manganese state and ferrous iron, R"" represents the trivalent elements, ferric iron, aluminum and chromium in the chromie state. An account of the amorphous substitution of the different bivalent and trivalent elements, specimens whose composition may be represented by a definite formula are rare, the composition of any given specimen generally exhibits treat complexity.

The above referenced contract between Badger Manufacturing Corporation and the U. S Bureau of Mines was executed June 30, 1975, as a result of the request for proposals for innovative machine concepts. We selected the cutting machine category because of the obvious lack of technical progress in this field for many years: Phase I of the contract required blasting fragmentation tests to determine proper blasting patterns for use with the auger-type kerf cutting machine. Phase II required design concept development for a machine capable of cutting a circular void as an aid to blasting.

This paper3 describing the mining methods at the Page mine operated by the Federal Mining & Smelting Co., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Page mine is the most westerly of the producing lead-silver-zinc mines in the Coeur d'Alene mining district of Idaho, being situated 5 miles west of the city of Kellogg and at an elevation of 2,677 feet above sea level. It may be classed as one of the new active producers, of the district and owes its present activity largely to the development of floatation.

In the past, mining has represented between 11% and 12% of the gross domestic product (GDP). In 1982, mining contributed over $150 million to the estimated $1.4 billion GDP.2 Overall economic growth for 1983 was projected at about 2%, primarily as a result of increased tourism. The inflation rate remained at or fell below the 1982 level of almost 4%. The Government continued its efforts to strengthen the industrial base by improving infrastructural systems and the establishment of a free trade zone. Laws against property ownership by foreigners or foreign-owned companies were strengthened, but the prohibition was softened to allow for close family inheritance. Otherwise, Government approval must be obtained to retain property acquired through inheritance, court order, mortgage, or other means. Special consideration was granted to foreign investors seeking to promote industries beneficial to the economy.

Illumination hardware developed in conjunction with previous Contracts H024202l, H0242049, and H0242023 had not been adequately tested in actual underground work situations. The purpose of this contract was to install and monitor this equipment on mining machines and in actual working places of coal mines to gain experience with the use of the lamps and support equipment in the abusive and critical environments for which they were intended. The equipment that was to be tested consisted of the following: a. Lamps -A variety of sizes of permissible fluorescent lamps which operate from 12 volts DC power. These include the following sizes: Model 8, (9 watts) 2" diameter; Model 15/2 (14 watts) 2" diameter; Model 15/3 (21 watts) 3" diameter; Model 20 (25 watts) 3" diameter; Model 30, (28 watts) 3" diameter; and Model 40, (39 watts) 311 diameter. Representative photographs of these lamps are shown in Figure 1-1 and 1-2.

Examples of calculations using these data are given.

It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers, as well as to industry as a whole. This study was performed by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the potential supply of primary copper from domestic resources. A tonnage-price relationship was developed indicating the quantity of copper that could be produced economically from known deposits at various copper prices and at various rates of return on the required capital investment. Costs of production are based on estimated capital and operating costs for mining, concentrating, smelting, and refining the copper. Total known recoverable copper resources are 189 million short tons of which 83 million tons could be economically recovered assuming a price of $0.50 per pound of copper, credit for the recovery of byproducts, and a 12-percent rate of return on capital investment. The quantities of recoverable byproducts associated with the 83 million tons of recoverable copper are molybdenum, 1.8 million tons, gold, 43 million troy ounces, and silver, 740 million troy ounces.

The effectiveness of an industry's safety activities can be gaged best by the accident records of that industry. In an effort to gage conditions in the petroleum industry, and with the objective of helping to reduce the number of accidents in it, the Bureau of Mines from time to time has tabulated, analyzed, and published pertinent statistical information.3/. These reports have dealt with distribution, causes, and costs and related phases of accidents for various and collective divisions of the petroleum industry in several sections of the country. This type of study aids the personnel of the Bureau in planning the course of its activities in accident-prevention work and gives useful data to persons engaged or interested in the promotion of safety in the petroleum industry, which will aid them in their efforts to reduce the number and severity of accidents. A majority of petroleum operators and "service? contractors have acknowledged their responsibility to provide their employees with safe working conditions and to their stockholders for greater economic value of invested capital by establishing safety divisions within their respective organizations. Such divisions have a primary duty, namely, to see that properly designed and guarded machinery and working equipment are furnished the employees and that they are trained in the safest practical methods of performing their work. Approximately 270,000 cu yd (20[0],000 cu m) of inferred subeconomic auriferous gravel resources were estimated in three Tertiary deposits in the Polk Springs study area (fig. 1 and table 1). These resources are exposed between tuff-breccia and lava flows of the Pliocene Tuscan Formation and Paleozoic or Mesozoic metamorphic rocks which suggests that although no deposits were identified in the other RARE II areas, they may be concealed beneath the Tuscan Formation. Difficulty in choosing drilling targets will make the likelihood of resource discoveries small. The development and production of these deposits would also be prohibitive under current economic conditions due to the thick covering of volcanic rocks. Recent stream gravels of Deer Creek in the Polk Springs study area contain enough gold to attract gold hobbyists; however, the stream gravels do not have sufficient volume to be considered a resource. Potential exists for additional auriferous gravels near the Occidental Mine in the Polk Springs RARE II area.

The production of oil during the early development of new oil fields is usually accompanied by large quantities of natural gas. Since in most fields gas under pressure is the main source of the energy causing the oil to move through the sands into the wells and thence to the surface, coincident production of natural gas will continue as long as present-day producing methods are used. Generally the use of this gas is restricted, since markets are not readily available. Consequently, a large portion of the gas produced is often wasted by being blown into the air. The magnitude of gas waste is well brought out in the following statement by Miller:5 Only a few outstanding examples need be cited to show the enormous production of gas that accompanies the discovery of new sources. In April, 1927, the Ventura field produced approximately 210,000,000 cubic feet of gas a day; and during the summer of 1927 Alamitos Heights reached a peak gas production of 102,000,000 cubic feet a day; on December 1, 1928, as a result of the summer's deeper drilling in the Long Beach field, surplus gas production amounted to 125,000,000 cubic feet a day. It is estimated that in January, 1929, the Santa Fe Springs field will have a daily gas production of 387,000,000 cubic feet from the recently discovered Buckbee oil zone. Of this amount 274,000,000 cubic feet a day will be the surplus above the amount required for field and plant fuel, taken out by utility corporations, and that used in repressuring the Meyer sand which lies above the Buckbee zone.

The belt conveyor is one of the major pieces of equipment for transferring bulk material in mining operations. However, considerable amount of respirable dust may be generated whenever the bulk material is loaded, dumped, or transferred. This report identifies and evaluates various dust control technolgies applicable to belt conveyors, and describes how an integrated systems approach can reduce dust emissions at a transfer point. Phase I of the program consisted of literature search and a critical evaluation of various dust control technologies. The work established that a comprehensive approach to calculating exhaust volumes for dust collection system does not exist. The parameters that affect the wet dust suppression efficiency were also reviewed. Based on the Phase I work, bulk material handling system and dry dust collection or wet dust suppression systems were designed and installed at a number of transfer points in a limestone processing facility, a surface mine selected as a field test site. Field test data were used to determine the validity of various exhaust volume calculations at the different transfer points. The field test data also formed the basis for the evaluations of the relative effectiveness of commercially available and wet dust suppression systems in controlling respirable dust emissions.

Water sprays and water powered scrubbers have both been utilized in the mining and milling industry to suppress airborne dust. Unconfined water sprays operated at lower water pressures of ?689 kPa (?100 psig) can be very effective at wetting the mine product at the dust source and significantly reducing the amount of respirable dust that becomes airborne. However, unconfined waters sprays can be somewhat ineffective in actually removing airborne dust from the air. On the other hand, water powered scrubbers operating at higher water pressures of ?1,724 kPa (?250 psig) in physical enclosures or ducts have previously been demonstrated to be very effective in removing airborne dust from the air. These higher operating water pressures are uncommon in many mines and mills, so their use is limited. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently investigated the performance of a lower-pressure, water powered inline series spray scrubber for removing localized airborne dust emitted at the source. Results showed noticeable improvements in airborne dust capture efficiency through the operation o f multiple inline series hollow cone spray nozzles within a round duct or pipe at the same water pressure as a single spray. Operating hollow cone spray(s) at higher water pressures noticeably improved airflow through the scrubber and yielded some additional scrubber efficiency improvements. Thus, in-line spray scrubber efficiency trade-offs were observed to be made by altering spray power components of water pressure and/or quantity (number of sprays). Results show that, on average, up to 0.23 and 0.32 m3/s (484 and 679 cu ft per min) of airflow at 0.81 and 0.69 dust capture efficiencies can be achieved with three 81° and 33°hollow cone inline series sprays, respectively, operating at 1,655 kPa (240 psig).

In 1980, gold, silver, and pit and quarry construction materials were the principal minerals produced in the Dominion of Fiji. The combined value of these minerals totaled some $7.2 million,2 over 85% of all mineral production, Production of cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products continued to increase, but gold and silver production from Fiji's only operating mine declined slightly from the previous year's level. Mineral exploration has been carried out by U.S., Australian, British, Canadian, West German, and South African companies since the early 1960's, and a high level of activity was maintained throughout 1980. At the end of 1980, some 40 mineral prospecting licenses covering over 4,300 square kilometers were in force, and 19 applications were under consideration by the Mineral Resources Department. Total expenditures by mining companies on land base projects exceeded $6 million in 1980.

These proceedings consist of an overview of the underground metal and nonmetal mina fire protection research currently being conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The following papers address the areas of prompt, reliable fire detection, fire planning and warning, fire suppression, and personnel protection. Selected topics are included here that cover fire protection systems for shafts, underground fueling areas, and mobile underground mining equipment; spontaneous combustion, improved stench, and product-of-combustion fire warning systems; computer-aided ventilation modeling; fire doors; and an investigation of fire hazards in mine timbers. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 419 natural gas samples from 22 States collected during calendar year 1964 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863/ and 576.4/ Six previous publications have been made to present the results of 6,293 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines, Helium Activity, prior to 1964. Reduce the cost of modifying uranium well casings so that leaching solutions can pass through, but sand grains are blocked. Approach The well casing and surrounding cement are perforated at the mineralized zone by impinging them with high pressure water jets. How It Works A nozzle assembly is attached to a high pressure (15,000 psi) pipe and lowered into the well casing which typically is schedule 40 PVC (poly-vinyl chloride). The high pressure pipe line is extended down Into the casing until it reaches the mineralized zone. The upper end of the pipeline is then connected by a high pressure hose to the outlet of a 10,000 psi pump. Turning the pump on for 5 seconds causes a high velocity water jet to cut through the well casing and the surrounding cement. Figure 1 shows a high pressure pipe being installed in a well casing. Cutting small diameter holes in the casing allows the leachant to enter the casing and be pumped to the surface. However, the holes are small enough to prevent most sand grains from entering. Numerous holes are usually cut through the casing. The 3-nozzle assembly shown in Figure 2 cuts three holes, one above another.

These summaries have been prepared in cooperation with State geological surveys or related agencies. To improve the economics of low-temperature carbonization of coal, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the upgrading of the product tar to marketable chemicals. This report describes experiments on the catalytic hydrodealkylation, followed by catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of the dealkylate to phthalic and maleic anhydrides, of mixed residues from the urea adduction of lignite-neutral oil fraction and on the catalytic thermal dealkylation of high-boiling tar acids. The hydrodealkylation experiments were conducted at pressures from 1,000 to 1,750 psig and at temperatures from 600° to 1,000° F. The oxidation was, in all cases, at atmospheric pressure and 9500 F. Maximum yield of maleic anhydride, based on the liquid feed to the hydrodealky1ation unit, was 12.2 percent at 750° F and 1,500 psig; that of phthalic anhydirde was 6.9 percent at 650° F and 1,500 psig. Maximum yield of combined anhydrides was 18.8 percent at 650° F and 1,500 psig. The non-dealkylated feed material, upon oxidation, yielded 8.9 percent and 3.8 percent maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride, respectively.

Recent studies indicate that the United States halt substantial reserves of ilmenite, one of the major titanium minerals. However, the studies showed that sources of rutile, another important source of titanium are limited. This paper summarizes and evaluates results and conclusions reached by the various investigations initiated by the Bureau of Mines and others pertaining to the titanium mineral resources of the Nation. Domestic occurrences of ilmenite that are economically exploitable by present-day beneficiation methods are found in Florida, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, and Virginia. These deposits are estimated to contain 50.3 million tons of titanium dioxide (TiO2). Occurrences of ilmenite that cannot be processed economically under present technological conditions are found in California, Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wyoming. These reserves amount to 51.1 million tons of TiO2. Reserves of rutile found in the United States are estimated to be 1.8 to 2.1 million tons of TiO2. Other than occurrences in Florida and South Carolina, rutile is found either in small scattered bodies or in deposits where the mineral cannot be recovered economically by present beneficiation methods.
