The first seismograph was developed around 132 AD. Much has happened since then. The “modern” seismograph (> 1920) has seen a lot of changes. From falling pin seismographs to magnetic tape units to today’s Z-curve analysis models, the blasting seismograph remains a necessary and useful tool to the blasting community. But why so many changes? What forces drive the advancement of the seismograph? There are many answers and aspects to this question. Research, regulation, and technological advances are the primary forces behind innovation in our industry. But these three forces also drive each other. Research drove our industry from displacement seismographs to particle velocity seismographs. Technology took us from 80 pound seismographs to units weighing less than 5 pounds. Regulation (and litigation) - the driving forces behind the Z-curve analysis units. How have these innovations helped today’s blaster? Have there been any negatives? It is important for today’s blaster to understand how we got here and why.

The channel effect is a phenomenon that takes place with decoupling explosive charges; an air shock wave propagating ahead of the detonation wave in the annular space around the explosive charge compresses the charge so that the process of detonation is modified and even stopped. For commercial explosives, such as AN/FO slurries and emulsions, the channel effect causes partial detonation under certain conditions. To simulate and evaluate the phenomenon, a hydrodynamic model was developed based on the assumption that the pre-shock wave is produced by Mach reflection at the tube walls. Based on instrumented experimental studies with the above explosives in diameters ranging from 25 to 90 mm in pipe sizes ranging from 35 to 127 mm, it has been possible to demonstrate that a criterion for failure based on a critical impulse concept fits the experimental data well. Critical impulse values for the various explosives tested are presented along with the necessary correlations between charge and borehole diameter required to produce this.

This case study was conducted in an aggregate company, located at Estância Velha town, RS, Brazil. The study was based on the results of vibration monitoring mainly in terms of PPV (peak particle velocity) and frequency. Changes in the blasting design were performed to adjust the limits determined by the Brazilian standard NBR 9653:2005. Understanding the seismic wave attenuation for the site, changes in the blasting design were tested to fit the limits, such as reduction of maximum charge per delay, initiation orientation and sequencing and finally the replacement of accessories like "shock tube" by electronic initiation system. The results are shown below.

The partitioning of blasting energy into “Shock” and “Heave” components is a popular concept for attempting to match explosives to particular ground conditions and blasting results. The issue is complex, as it affects both the detonation process and the immediate response of the rock skin. However, the fundamental process of energy transfer from the explosive to the rock through the blasthole wall is not well defined. Clues to the “Shock” phase of blasthole expansion are given by cratering behaviour of materials subject to high velocity penetrators. The final cavity volume defines both the energy used to achieve this and the resistance of the confining material. Attention is being given to the link between penetration of a solid target and expansion of a readymade hole, both producing the same outcome. The benefit of this work is that it leads to clearer understanding of how explosives will impact upon the blasting results and helps to explain the energy consumption in blasting.

The ability of voids, microballoons, and even solids to sensitize explosives has been known and used for many years. This phenomenon has generally been studied and reported under the terminology of "hot spots" because of the increase in local pressure and temperature when a shock wave encounters such sensitizers. A method for treating this phenomenon in detonation theory or in a detonation model has been studied for almost the same length of time. Perhaps because of the complexity and non-linearity of the void, or microballoon collapse, several of these studies have used the expediency of including additional terms in the burn rate law to account for the influence of hot spots. The detonation model proposed here considers the sensitization due to discontinuities in the shock impedance to be a mechanical phenomenon to be accounted for in the mechanical equations governing the detonation and not in the burn rate law. While this is not a new contention, the method for handling this non-linear phenomenon within the proposed model is new. The model also includes a method which accounts for the manufacturing variables of emulsion matrix cell size, microballoon size and type, as well as energetic additives.

The aim of this study was to understand clearly how VOD of emulsion-based gassed explosives is influenced by parameters such as nitrate salt composition in the oxidizing phase, product density, blend composition, gassing rate, type of sensitization, etc. Also some VOD testing was performed on watergel-based gassed explosives in order to compare the results with those obtained for emulsions. VOD measurements were conducted in the surface blasting facility at the Research and Development laboratory of ENAEX SA (Calama, Chile). Despite the fact that the influences of some parameters on VOD of emulsion-based gassed explosives are easily predicted, there was found to be an unexpected correlation. Although it is commonly believed that the VOD of gassed explosives depends on the density, this study found that the VOD depends on the both size and the amount of gas bubbles incorporated into the product as well as type of sensitisation, regardless of whether the explosive was straight emulsion or a blend. Density is just a consequence of the incorporation of voids into the explosive. Future work in this area may examine variation of other parameters, in order to obtain a greater knowledge of detonation properties and therefore to design more efficient explosives.

Anaheim Bay, located at Seal Beach, California, is the site of the Huntington Harbor development of waterfront homes and marine facilities. The main entrance to Anaheim Bay is a relatively narrow channel connecting the bay with the Pacific Ocean which runs under California State Highway One. During the development of Huntington Harbor the old highway bridge was replaced with a new, higher bridge to allow for boat passage through the channel. At that time only the main span decking of the old bridge was removed, leaving the support pillars and the approach ramps in place (see Figure 1). The narrowness of this channel, plus the increasing boat traffic created a situation in which public demand for the removal of the old bridge became significant. Because the bridge was located within the boundaries of the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station (see Figure 2) the Navy became involved in the bridge removal. Eventually the task was assigned to the Naval Amphibious Construction Battalion One and work began in early 1974.

During a research period lasting over three years, a vast number of seismograms were collected and analyzed. From this data, other than obtaining a host of new information pertaining to the effects of surface mine blast on underground mines, it was found that by mounting seismograph velocity transducers at the center of crosscuts in underground mines, seismograms can be obtained which give fairly accurate information about the maximum levels of vibration, and the associated Of stresses and strains, misfiring of blast holes, delay accuracy and delay overlap. The technique of analysis is a simple one; it involves matching of the frequency of wave or wave groups with the shot card information such as rows of holes, number of holes and the cumulative milliseconds of delays used in the blast holes. Any discrepancy that might exist between the frequency of waves and the expected cumulative millisecond delay for a given row or hole eventually will show up as a mismatch in the analysis. This simple technique enables the seismographer to be involved not only in the monitoring of blast peak vibration, but also in making recommendations as to the choice of millisecond delays, reducing the possibility of delay overlaps and reducing the hazards of blast hole cutoffs.

Blasting conducted in surface coal mining operations in the Appalachian region consumes a significant amount of blasting agents. Emission of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from these operations potentially represents an environmental challenge. This paper presents work conducted to quantify NOx output from the detonation of blasting agents common to surface blasting operations in surface coal mines. Annual ANFO and emulsion consumption data was collected from an operational surface coal mine located in West Virginia. It is known that many factors contribute to the types of gaseous byproducts released from the detonation of explosives. These factors include but are not limited to: fuel to oxygenator ratio, degree of confinement, and contamination. While, past research has been conducted to study the relationships these factors play on the release of NOx, these findings do not agree with one another. The annual explosive consumption values from the West Virginian mine were applied to NOx emission conversion factors in published literature. This lead to a range of NOx emissions from 95 to 914 tons in a year. Given the wide range of NOx production the utility of this information is suspect. The EPA recognizes a standard factor of 17 lbs (NOx)/ton (ANFO) however this factor is based on chemical composition and does not address contamination, confinement, or AN to FO ratio. This factor when applied to the West Virginia Mine's explosive consumption produced a value of 215 tons of NOx. There is a lack of information on NOx emission from emulsion type explosives. The work presented in this paper can be used by blasting professionals to quantify NOx emissions and guide future work for producing better predictor factors.

"Image analysis techniques are widely used for blast fragmentation measurement, and various commercial packages are available for this purpose. These packages are very versatile and serve as a useful tool for optimization of blasting practice. But many times, the results provided by image analysis techniques do not match with sieved and predicted data. This leads to the suggestion that understanding the limitations of this technology is as important as understanding its usefulness and versatility.A study was conducted in two stages:(a) Comparison between the results of image analysis and screened data using laboratory scale muck piles.(b) Comparison between predicted (Kuz-Ram) and measured (Image analysis) blast fragmentation results for several bench blasts.During laboratory work, muck piles with known size distributions were analyzed with the help of image analysis technique. A disparity was observed between the sieved and measured results because the image analysis techniques cannot accurately determine the % of fi nes in the muck. During fi eld work about fourteen blasts were monitored. It was observed that predicted (Kuz-Ram) results rarely matched with measured (Image analysis) results. The Kuz-Ram curves were modifi ed by changing the rock factor so that the Kuz-Ram and Image analysis curves match in the vicinity of the 50% passing size. The pairs of curves (modifi ed Kuz-Ram and Image analysis) were divided into three categories depending upon their differences in the coarse and fi nes ranges. The blast design parameters affecting the difference between the pair of curves have been outlined. The suggestions have been made to better utilize the image analysis system."

Mining in underground situations requires constant change due to changing ore bodies and economics. The Homestake Mine in its 122 years of existence has gone through numerous changes due to these factors. Recent sustained low prices in gold and ore bodies that are smaller or within mined out areas have forced the mine to reevaluate how these ore blocks will be mined. This paper will describe the design, drilling, and blasting of a complex ore block using the blind raise uphole bulk mining method.

East Pit Wira II Project in South Kalimantan, Indonesia with a radius of <500 meters (1,640 ft) from residential has about 454,168 tonnes of coal reserves, with a total remaining reserves of 3,369,383 tonnes (topography per end of June 2011). Thus, reserves may be lost as much as 13.48%. Therefore, it is needed to determine safe blasting technique which meets the Indonesian National Standards (SNI) No. 7571:2012 of vibration threshold, the maximum vibration of 3 mm/s (0.118 in/s) and air blast of 120 dB.

If dynamite is used in hot metal mines, it may be subject to decomposition, and the increase in nitroglycol vapour under the high temperatures causes bad headaches of workers. Also the explosives containing ammonium nitrate are very dangerous when mixed with sulfide ores at a high temperature!. Therefore we developed a heat-resistant water gel explosive which is safe to be handled at these hot metal mines.

Blasting engineers are mainly concerned about fragmentation issues. Even further, this is the final goal of using explosives. A lot of models have been developed for controlling fragmentation distribution, but most of the time, they are based on physical phenomena using field data as input for rock characteristics. Fragmentation is a result of two phenomena: waves from the borehole, damaging and cracking the rock, and gas pressure, widening those cracks and spreading out rock fragments. This model simulates the P wave escaping from boreholes and the cracks created by these P waves. It takes into account rock characteristics, provided by digital imaging, and explosive characteristics coming from VOD measurements. What we need to focus on, is the interaction of P waves coming from each borehole related to different timing sequences. This paper presents several simulations that show the influence of the timing and the sequence accuracy on the fragmentation distribution.

In 2002, testing was proposed to generate needed data to assist in developing improved explosives safety standards within the US Department of Defense. This testing emphasizes two major areas: (1) full-scale donor/acceptor trials examining debris generation and acceptor response and (2) debris perforation testing of representative roof/wall materials. The full-scale donor/acceptor trials are referred to as the SciPan series. The first three tests in the SciPan series have been completed, as has the first phase of the SPIDER program. This paper describes the status and future of these testing programs, reasons for choosing specific tests, potential benefits, and planning for future phases.

The environmental problems arisen from ground vibration and air blast have been faced and discussed frequently in various industries such as mining, construction, quarry, pipe line etc. where blasting is unavoidable operation. Structural damage due to ground vibrations creates great socio-economic problems for mine and quarry management as well as for the people residing in its vicinity, therefore in bench blast design, not only the technical and economical aspects, such as block size, uniformity and cost, but also the elimination of environmental problems resulting from ground vibration and air blast should be taken into consideration. With the general trend towards larger blasts in mining and infrastructure excavation, ground vibration and air blast problems and complaints have significantly increased. With increasing environmental constraints on the levels of disturbance induced by blasting operations upon nearby residents, there is an increasing need to be able to design cautious blasting with greater precision, therefore determination of maximum amount of explosive per delay for a certain distance especially in large blasts is of great importance for the elimination of these environmental problems. In another word, prediction of ground vibration components is extremely important for the minimisation of the environmental complaints. Estimating of particle velocity and other components of ground vibration with reliable approaches will give important facilities to the blasters. Although many studies had been carried out to isolate environmental problems induced by blasting in the past, a general reliable formulae has not been established yet. Due to restrictions on the complexity of ground motion, blasting and test site factors, experimental studies are still necessary for each site to minimise environmental issues. This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements carried out during the excavation activity for contruction of an organised industrial region located nearby Istanbul in Turkey. The major rock type is granite that is encountered at this site. Within the scope of this study, in order to predict peak particle velocity level and produce a site-specific propagation curve for this site, ground vibration components were measured for blast events during bench blast optimization studies over a long period. In blasting operations; ANFO (blasting agent), gelatine dynamite (priming) and delay detonators (firing) were used as explosives. While the parameters of scaled distance (charge quantity per delay and the distance between the shot and the station) were recorded carefully, the ground vibration components were measured by means of two different vibration monitors for every event. Then, the data pairs of scaled distance and particle velocity were analyzed. The equation of scaled distance extensively used in the literature was taken into consideration for the prediction of peak particle velocity. At the end of statical analysis and evaluations an empirical relationship with good correlation was established between peak particle velocity and scale distance for this site.
