"Comparison studies of different technologies are performed when selecting optimum option for gold ore and concentrate processing. Methods of ultrafine grinding, oxidizing roasting, bacterial leaching and pressure oxidation are used to extract gold from refractory ores and concentrates. Refractory gold flotation concentrate produced from pyrite-arsenopyrite ores of Bestobe deposit is a case study in this paper. The results of the experimental tests of the direct leaching of flotation concentrate and pre-oxidation products using different methods (oxidizing roasting cinder, pressure oxidation and bacterial leaching cakes) are the following: - cyanidation of original flotation concentrate provides recovery of Au at 46.6 %; - oxidizing roasting increases gold recovery from 46.6 % to 85 %; - BIOX increases gold recovery up to 86 %; - preliminary pressure oxidation of flotation concentrate ensures steadily high Au extraction in the follow-up cyanidation at 94.9-96.5 %. Pressure oxidation and bio-oxidation has changed dramatically the strategy of refractory gold ore processing. These solutions provided for development of ore deposits that considered earlier non-commercial. However, refractory ore processing has a complex character in terms of developing process flowsheet and requires large amount of studies to be performed for each new project. Gold extraction is the basic but not the only criteria to technology selection for gold ore and concentrate processing. Opex and capex, ore reserves, regional geography, developed infrastructure and skill personnel should be considered. Process studies and feasibility study of the developed technology shall be provided for each specific gold ore deposit. INTRODUCTION Due to changes in available feedstock and depletion of easy-to-process ores, refractory ores containing finely disseminated gold and silver in sulphides (primarily, in pyrites and arsenopyrites) are more and more involved into processing. Experts say that such ores amount above 40 % of the world’s gold reserves. Conventional technologies of gold extraction from refractory ores include flotation, roasting and cinder cyanidation (Fraser etal., 1991). However, today’s best available practice for refractory gold ore processing are bacterial (BIOX) and pressure (POX) oxidation."

Chemical composition, mineral composition, and iron occurrence state of main mineral are studied, Research of mineral processing technology is carried out according to ore features. The test results indicate, that through staged grinding-staged concentration process, the better separation index is up to 65.54%, iron preparation concentrate grade and 85.66% recovery with the fineness (-200 mesh) 45.88% in the primary grinding ore and the fineness (-200 mesh) 75.50%, in secondary grinding ore in the situation of best magnetic field intensity (roughing 0.2T and cleaning 0.15T).

"The rapid developments in computer vision and computational resources are creating new possibilities for the use of machine vision systems for industrial control. A number of commercial image analysis systems exist, and research into improved measurements of froth performance is ongoing. An integral part of the implementation of these systems is the validation of the relationship between image analysis measurements and flotation cell performance. This paper discusses the factors affecting concentrate flow and presents the results obtained from one such system with respect to its ability to estimate the flow of concentrate from a flotation cell.The relationship between froth flow speed and the rate of recovery of concentrate from a flotation cell was investigated on two industrial operations, both processing PGM (Platinum Group Metal) bearing ores. Results are presented that show a relationship between froth flow speed and concentrate yield."

"Fine particle recovery by conventional flotation processes is very low mainly due to the low probability of bubble/particle collision and adhesion. In order to solve the problem of low particle recovery, several flotation technologies have been developed to increase bubble/particle collision efficiency. Among these technologies, the electroflotation process stands out. This process has advantages in the generation of microbubbles (<100 µm) and in the production of different amounts of hydrogen and oxygen microbubbles. These advantages favorably influence the fine particle floatability, due to the greater probability of particle/bubble collision and adhesion. The electroflotation tests were conducted for a hematite/sodium oleate system in a Partridge-Smith modified electroflotation binary cell of 0.38 L usable volume. The sodium oleate concentration, particle size, pH and current density were evaluated. Satisfactory results in the recovery of hematite were found at pH values of 7, reaching hematite floatability of 99% and 90% with hydrogen and oxygen bubbles, respectively.INTRODUCTIONThe flotation recovery of fine and ultrafine particles is normally very low and is caused by several factors, among them, the low probability of collision and adhesion bubble-particle, the difficulty to overcome the energy barrier (entrainment and entrapment), low selectivity, surface oxidation and mineralogical changes (Schulze et al., 1989; Waters et al., 2008; Shahbazi et al., 2010). This problem can be overcome by decreasing the bubble size or by increasing the apparent particle size. However, it is worth noting that the use of small bubbles or micro bubbles also involves some disadvantages such as their low momentum resulting in a slower process comparing with conventional flotation. Electroflotation is an attractive alternative for treating fine particles with small bubbles less than 100 µm, generated by the electrolysis of water. Electroflotation is one of the variants of the flotation process, where the gaseous phase is produced by electrolysis of an aqueous solution, generating oxygen and hydrogen bubbles (Sarkar, 2010; Gupta and Ali, 2012). These smaller size bubbles allow the recovery of fine particles by increasing the collision efficiency. This process is versatile and competitive in relation to other techniques such as dissolved air flotation and dispersed air flotation because the electroflotation units are smaller, more compact and require less maintenance and less operating cost than other flotation units (Zouboulis and Matis, 1995,). In addition, the electroflotation process is a clean technique and provides results in a short time, requiring only the investment in the electroflotation cell construction stage and the choice of the electrodes (Ketkar et al., 1991; Sarkar et al., 2010; Sun et al., 2011). In this sense, this study assesses the effect of pH, particle size and sodium oleate concentration on electroflotation of hematite fines."

Modification of hydrophobic part of carboxylic collector molecule is an upcoming trend for producing new reagents and changing its flotation properties such as activity, selectivity, sensitivity to hardness salts that inevitably present in the pulp liquid phase in the processing of ores containing calcium minerals. A wide range of apatite collectors ? monoalkyl ethers and monoalkylamides of dicarboxylic acids ? succinic, o-phthalic and maleinic acids have been synthesized by the addition of aliphatic alcohols and amines with various hydrocarbon radical value (from ?11 to ?16) to anhydride of the corresponding acid. Using computer modeling based on ChemBio 3D program of specialized complex Chem?ffice the calculation was carried out of charge distribution on atoms, energy parameters of molecules for investigated compounds. Calculated values of absolute hardness (?=6.75 ? 12.36) and absolute electronegativity (?= 5.67 ? 8.90) of the reagents showed that monoderivatives of dicarboxylic acids refer to the ?hard? type of bases. The degree of a charge transfer during calcium compounds formation of considered collecting agents (?N=0.009 ? 0.143) has been computed. Dissociations, micelle formation in solutions of these reagents and its hydrophobic and collecting properties were investigated in respect to apatite. Dependence of bulk, surface and collector properties on collector molecule architecture (double bond or benzene ring and non-ionogenic functional group in the structure of hydrocarbon radical) has been established. It is shown that experimentally determined dissociation constants (??a=5.16 ? 5.60 for succinic acid derivatives and ??a=3.32-3.78 for maleinic and o-phthalic acid derivatives) perfectly correspond to acidic properties predicted by computer calculations. Compounds of monoalkylderivative dicarboxilic acid have been determined optimum in composition and structure. The results of apatite flotation from apatite-nepheline ores of the Khibiny deposit (the Kola Peninsula) are presented here and show benefits of selected reagents. Professor A.M. Gaudin and his students at MIT were dedicated to understanding the fundamentals of mineral processing and as a consequence were constantly searching for better quantatative descriptions of size reduction, liberation and mineral separations. I have had the good fortune of meeting Professor Gaudin and working with many the modeling pioneers who followed him. I have observed first hand the refinement of mineral processing models as they increased in realisticness moving up the steps of the pyramid (see figure below) from pure empiricism to the current pinacle of physics based models. During this journey our industry benefited significanbtly as model prediction errors were reduced from ± 20% to ± 1%. Unit operation and plant simulations improved in accuracy and speed of calculations.

During incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW), some heavy metals and other environmentally harmful elements are liberated into bottom ash. The stricter environmental regulations require a higher immobilization efficiency of the ash before its safe disposal and application. Vitrification is one of the promising options, and has the advantages of high destruction efficiency of organics, high immobilization of heavy metals, and large volume reduction. The main components of the vitrified slag are SiO2, CaO, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Na2O and MgO, and the compositions have direct effect on the glass formation during vitrification, and further on the physical and mechanical properties of the slag. To provide essential data for the utilization of bottom ash as vitrified slag, the phase relations and thermodynamic properties of the oxide system need to be systematically investigated. In the present study, the liquidus temperature of the typical vitrified bottom ash slag was determined by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement. High temperature equilibrium experiments were conducted to investigate the phase relations of the sub oxide system of CaO-SiO2-Na2O by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Microprobe Analysis (EMPA) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The results show that the melting temperature of the vitrified bottom ash is around 930°C. In the CaO-SiO2-Na2O system with less than 50 mol% SiO2, the liquidus temperature de-creases with increasing amounts of Na2O along the tie-line of Na2O-Ca3Si2O7. Two compounds Na2Ca3Si2O8 and Na4Ca8Si5O20 are identified in the oxide system.

The non-selective entrainment of fine solids in flotation equipment has a detrimental effect on the concentrate grade. Reduction of solids entrainment (upgrading) is typically related with a loss in recovery of valuable minerals. For improving the froth transport characteristics and flotation cells design, a better understanding and quantification of the actual solids drainage and entrainment processes are required. In this work, the study of solids transport in the froth of a two-dimensional flotation cell was performed. The prototype cell represents a radial section of an industrial flotation cell (130m3) and was operated at steady state. Experimental tests consisted of adding a small amount of radioactive solid tracer (0.3g) near the top-of-froth or near the bottom of froth (close to the interface). The solid was selected as a non-floatable mineral (gangue) in order to evaluate both the solid entrainment into the concentrate as well as the solid drainage into the collection zone. Solid tracer consisted of fine or coarse gangue particles, P80 of 35 and 120 µm, respectively. Twelve collimated sensors located along the froth and collection zones allowed the evaluation of the solid transport in the froth, and the solid drainage from the froth to the collection zone, after tracer addition at different distances from the discharge lip. Results showed that longer distances to the froth discharge lip, as well as higher particle sizes, promotes higher solid drainage from the froth to the pulp zone, while decreasing the solids entrainment into the concentrate. The same result was observed for the solid located near the top-of-froth as well as near the bottom of froth. This information was complemented by the froth surface velocity measurements, using the Visiofroth system, showing a good agreement between the froth bubbles velocity and the solid transport velocity, measured near the discharge lip.

Different hydro-metallurgical processes have been studied in order to recover manganese(II) from oxidised minerals such as MnO2. An innovative acid reductive leaching carried out in mild experimental conditions was here considered using agricultural and industrial wastes containing carbohydrates as reducing agents. The leaching process was investigated from a kinetic and equilibrium point of view in order to optimise the experimental conditions, develop a kinetic model and obtain high purity concentrated MnSO4 solutions. To study the leaching kinetic a Shrinking Core Model (SCM) was modified by a variable activation energy term to take into account both the variable reagent concentrations and the reaction rate change with respect to the manganese dioxide conversion. The influence of the particle size in the kinetic model is discussed with the support of SEM analysis before and after leaching. Manganese extraction yield was maximised (170-190 g/L) using appropriate carbohydrates and acid excesses, while impurity concentrations were kept low (Fe<10ppm and Ca<300ppm) pre-treating the ores, using hydro-alcoholic leaching medium and different combinations of down-stream processes. In particular precipitation, solvent extraction and adsorption onto active carbon were tested to eliminate Fe and Ca from MnSO4 solutions.

Selecting sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) as grinding aid, the effect of grinding aid on the grinding efficiency of bauxite taken from Shanxi province was studied and its mechanisms were analyzed by measuring the variation of adsorption characteristic, pulp viscosity, surface electric potential of the bauxite and the surface appearance of particles. The results showed that, compared with no grinding aids added the content of -0.074mm in the ground product was increased by 5.45 percentage points under the optimal grinding conditions adding PAAS as grinding aid when the amount of PAAS was 0.7%wt of bauxite. Because the physical adsorption and chemical adsorption were occurred on the bauxite surface, which could reduce the pulp viscosity, change the surface electric potential of the bauxite, enhance the surface appearance of particles and lower the surface hardness of the bauxite, the grinding efficiency of bauxite was increased by PAAS. We studied the feasibility of automated mineralogy to discriminate between tennantite and enargite, the main sulfosalts found in the Rio Blanco deposit, Codelco-Chile, in order to predict the content of minor elements (As, Sb, Ag, Pb, Zn) that impact on the process and concentrate prices. The identification of these minerals is feasible using traditional microscopy, however not possible by automated mineralogy. This drawback prevents comparing the databases generated in the past by means of conventional microscopy with the information obtained at present by QEMSCAN. To differentiate enargite from tennantite the mineral composition of both sulfosalts was studied by electron microprobe. The presence of associated minor element contents of about 8% zinc in tennantites and not exceeding 0.07% in enargites were used to modify the SIP database of QEMSCAN to enable the quantification of these phases in samples of head, residue and concentrate coming from As-bearing domains of the deposits. Detection limits allowed to determine the mineral species in the head, concentrate and residues. The integration of methodologies such as automated mineralogy and microprobe can be used successfully to quantify the presence of some ore forming solid solution.

"There are increasingly stricter environmental regulations imposed for use of cyanide leaching for the extraction of gold from ores. Alternative lixiviants to cyanide, preferably with low toxicity, have been extensively studied. Thiosulphate has emerged as one of the most suitable alternative leaching agent in place of cyanide due to its low toxicity and technical attributes e.g. fast leaching kinetics, high gold extractions from carbonaceous ores in particular. High solubility of most copper minerals in cyanide solutions results in low gold extractions due to excessively high consumption of cyanide. In contrast, low reactivity of copper minerals in thiosulphate solutions makes thiosulphate leaching potentially suitable alternative for treatment Cu-bearing gold ores. The extraction of gold/silver from a copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate (62 g/t Au, 110 g/t Ag and 0.3% Cu) in thiosulphate solutions was investigated in this study. The concentrate is composed of predominantly quartz (25%) and pyrite (32.7%) as well as sphalerite (5.37%), galena (2.12%) and anglesite (1.13%). Other minor minerals are arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, covellite and bournonite. Previous studies by the authors indicated that the concentrate did not respond well to cyanide leaching (i.e. 45-46% Au/Ag at 1 g/L NaCN). The effects of concentration of ammonia (0.2-1.5 M NH3), thiosulphate (0.1-0.75 M S2O3) and copper (0-20 mM CuSO4) on the extraction of gold and silver over 8 h. was investigated. Increasing the concentration of thiosulphate and ammonia substantially improved the rate and extent of gold leaching while high copper levels produced an adverse effect particularly at low concentration of thiosulphate (i.e. 0.1 M). Complete extraction of gold was achieved under suitable conditions. In contrast to gold, silver extractions remained consistently at low levels (i.e. 28%). These findings demonstrated that thiosulphate leaching could be used to achieve acceptable levels of gold extraction from the copper-bearing pyritic gold concentrate."

"The paper focuses on the results of the research on development of hydrometallurgical process of gold recovery from refractory sulfide flotation concentrates based on fine and ultrafine grinding. Refractory concentrates (the degree of refractoriness is 16.9%-82.6%) were chosen for testing. The efficiency of the process based on fine and ultrafine grinding to treat flotation concentrates with gold intergrown with sulfides and rock-forming minerals was shown. Based on the test work conducted, the process option was chosen. In included grinding of flotation concentrate to the size of 98% minus 20µm in a bead mill, lime treatment with air blow, CIL, filtration and detoxification of liquid phase of the slurry. This process (compared to the basic option) provides the recovery of gold from 82.6%, up to 94.0% and decreases the residual grade in the tailings from 3.3g/t to 1.1g/t at the consumption of 12.6NaCNkg/t. Based on the results of the test work and pilot plant testing, project design criteria of flotation circuit at a Russian plant was developed."

Structural alteration of pyrophyllite during mechanical activation in a planetary mill was investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. Mechanochemical effect markedly promotes the decrease in reflection intensities with increasing the grinding time. Prolonged grinding causes the pyrophyllite to become the amorphous structure. It can be indicated that pyrophyllite is very susceptible to alteration by grinding. Crystal size (d006) of pyrophyllite appears to be a limit after 2h grinding. IR spectroscopy analysis shows a little alteration in the bands of pyrophyllite after mechanical activation. The results indicate that the ordered structure of pyrophyllite is destroyed and lattice deformation occurs. Porous silica was then successfully prepared via leaching the mechanically activated pyrophyllite. Pyrophyllite was first ground for 6 h. Ground samples were subsequently leached with 4 M hy-drochloric acid at 80 °C for 2 h to produce porous silica with specific surface area of 188.1 m2/g, total pore volume of 0.18 mL/g and average pore size of 3.9 nm from N2 adsorption analysis. Otherwise, the porous silica obtained from direct leaching of the original pyrophyllite only has a specific surface area of 4.3 m adsorption analysis. 2/g and total pore volume of 0.03 mL/g. It is inferred that grinding is favorable for the formation of microstructure pores. It offers a simple and convenient route for the preparation of porous materials from natural minerals.

This paper presents the research on comprehensive recovery of copper, gold, silver and iron from tailings from high-intensity magnetic separation in Tonglushan Mine. By comparison of experimental results of three flowsheets?regrinding of tailings-conventional sulphidizing flotation, water heating enhanced sulphidizing flotation and acid leaching-sulphidizing precipitation flotation, it is concluded that regrinding of tailings-conventional sulphidizing flotation flowsheet has the best economical and technical performance and practicability. Regrinding and using the mixture of sodium hydroxamate and sodium xanthate are two of the notable technical characteristics of this best flowsheet. The system for comprehensive recovery of tailings has been put into production. It not only can recover the valuable minerals from tailings in Tonglushan Mine, but also can reduce the environmental pollution, resulting great economic and social benefit.

The ash contents in coal particles were examined in the paper dependably on particle size and its density. So, the two-dimensional regressive function Z=Z(?, D) was the searched object, where Z is random variable describing ash contents, ? - density and D ? particle diameter. This dependence is determined basing on experimental data concerning the coal of type 31. For this coal, the method of ordinary kriging is applied to calculate the values of a random variable Z. This method requires the proper selection of so-called variogram function, which 4 forms are considered in this paper in purpose to select the best solution. The given results were then evaluated by the residual deviation value and so compared with empirical data.

Today there is a consensus that xanthate adsorption on sulfide minerals is primarily controlled by redox reactions occurring at specific potentials on these semi-conductive minerals. Consequently, it is possible to control xanthate adsorption by controlling electrochemical conditions in the system by using oxidizing and reducing agents. The scope of this study was to investigate the possibilities to increase the selectivity of Cu-Fe-Zn ore flotation by applying electrochemical control in the conditioning of the flotation feed. In this work, mild steel grinding in a nitrogen atmosphere was used as the basis to provide a negative starting potential and minimize the amount of oxidation products on sulfide mineral surfaces. To study how different potential levels affect flotation results, a controlled conditioning procedure was utilized maintaining potential at a desired level by titrating the pulp with air. Xanthate adsorption kinetics during conditioning was examined by taking pulp samples for spectrophotometric analysis and laboratory flotation tests were conducted for samples that underwent the controlled conditioning procedure in the potential range of -200mV to +200mV vs. SHE. A clear correlation was detected between chalcopyrite recovery and the potential during controlled conditioning indicating that there was a constant increase in chalcopyrite recovery when the potential was shifted to more anodic values. It is possible that utilizing potential control in the conditioning stage, a smelter grade copper concentrate can be achieved directly in rougher flotation without cleaning stages. Conditioning in favorable conditions had significant positive effects on flotation selectivity of chalcopyrite. The improvement in copper concentrate grade being predominantly caused by the depression of pyrite. By applying the controlled conditioning procedure pyrite recovery in rougher flotation was reduced even low as under 1%, while in the tests without controlled conditioning, pyrite recovery varied between 7.5 – 65.7%. The result of this work indicate that affecting collector adsorption by electrochemical control in the conditioning stage can provide significant improvement in sulfide mineral flotation and industrial applications could lead to decreased chemical consumption, reduced equipment and maintenance costs.

"Using the flotation of a gold-containing ore from a deposit in Kazakhstan as an example, we have conducted a study designing dialkyldithiophosphate collectors, in addition to xanthates, for the flotation of hard-toenrich gold-containing ores to increase gold recovery.The increased flotational ability of the dialkyldithiophosphates was determined by their surface activity at the liquid-gas interface and their hydrophobic ability, the changing of which allowed us to control the collecting power and selective ability of the dialkyldithiophosphates. The studying of the surface activity of aqueous solutions was done using the stalagmometric method and the evaluation of the hydrophobic ability was done in percentage of the relative value of the zinc ion binding in the solution in standard conditions.Studying the influence of surface activity in our designed dialkyldithiophosphate collectors, with their close hydrophobic ability, showed that even with a small increase in surface activity in their aqueous solutions, gold recovery increased by 2-3% in laboratory conditions. Using this enabled us first to apply the dialkyldithiophosphate collector BTF-161 at a plant in Kazakhstan, and then to introduce the specially designed dialkyldithiophosphate collector BTF-163, which has been in use since. Further study of dialkyldithiophosphate activity based on this concept showed us that for the range of short-chain dialkyldithiophosphate collectors with a chain length of up to ?5, the effectiveness of ore processing became lower the higher their surface activity got, with relatively small differences in their hydrophobic ability. For long-chain dialkyldithiophosphates with a chain length of over ?5, ore processing effectiveness increased with the increase of their hydrophobic ability.Based on these studies, a new effective dialkyldithiophosphate collector, BTF-1517, was designed. Using this reagent in continuous gold recovery tests allowed us to reach an 84.21% recovery with a concentrate quality of 15.66 g/t, while using the applied collector BTF-163 in similar conditions led to the recovery of 82.87% with a concentrate quality of 15.65%. As a result, the Kazakhstan processing plant decided to conduct industrial tests with the BTF-1517 collector."

In this investigation, the possibility of physical separation methods such as attrition scrubbing, hydro-cycloning and also reverse flotation were investigated for silica and calcite removal from relatively low grade kaolin. The head sample was provided by the Iran China Clay Company and the major oxides contained in the head sample were Al2O3, SiO2, CaO and Fe2O3 with grades of 15.07%, 71.05%, 4.35% and 0.52% respectively. The liberation degree of calcite and iron impurities from kaolin particles were over 80% for particles finer than 210µm and 53µm respectively. Attrition scrubbing tests were carried out with scrubber cell of the conventional Denver flotation cell model D-12. Laboratory scale hydro cyclone was applied for the beneficiation of kaolin. Attrition scrubbing tests with control screen of 106µm did not achieve the desirable yield for purification of this kaolin sample, but hydro cyclone experiments resulted in better results. Hydro cyclone with 2.54 cm diameter used and the only variable was the cyclone inlet pressure ranging from 68.65kPa to 98.07kPa. The best inlet pressure was found to be 68.65kPa. Based on the optimized condition, Al2O3 and CaO amount in the hydro-cyclone overflow was 23% and 1.47% respectively. However weight recovery of the overflow in each cyclone experiment was less than 30% and multi stages of hydro-cyclones would have to be applied for higher weight recovery and better yield. All of the flotation tests were carried out in the conventional Denver flotation cell model D-12. Reverse floatation tests for calcite removal were carried out under alkali pH based on full factorial design of variables in 2 levels including one center point. The three parameters tested were collector dosage (gr/ton), pH and depressant dosage (gr/ton). The collected data from flotation tests were analyzed and optimized collector and depressant dosage were 1000 gr/ton and optimized pH was 8.5. Under the above mentioned conditions, calcite removal was about 75% and CaO content in the final product was reduced from 4.35% to 1.33%. However calcite removal will increase to more than 83% if the feed particle size in flotation tests is reduced from 210µm to finer than 53µm. Finally after optimization, the best working condition and possible flow sheet were developed.

"In the flotation process the contact angle is an important indicator of the hydrophobicity of a mineral particle. There is considerable literature showing that the contact angle increases when the chain length of the alkyl group associated with the collector molecule used to render the valuable mineral particle hydrophobic increases. The extent to which an alkyl group interacts with surrounding water molecules is quantified thermodynamically by the excess Gibbs energy. In the present paper it is shown that there exists generally a strong linear relationship between the excess Gibbs energy of the alkyl group associated with the collector and the contact angle. The structure-activity of such alkyl groups is in turn related to the total surface area, molecular volume, the molar volume, molecular weight of the functional groups in the molecule and interaction energies. It is proposed that the demonstrated relationship is indicative of the role which the alkyl group component of the collector, which is attached to the mineral particle, plays in increasing the extent to which water molecules at the surface of the mineral are rejected from the surface thus increasing the contact angle. The relationship between excess Gibbs energy and surface tension is further explored with a view to relating the observations quantitatively to the parameters in the Young equation.INTRODUCTIONThe issue of wettability of materials is of great importance to many industrial applications. Wettability studies usually involve the measurement of contact angles which indicate the degree of wetting when a solid and liquid interact. As is well known the contact angle (O) is the angle between planes tangent to the surfaces of the solid and the liquid at the wetting perimeter which is the zone where the air, water and solid phase merge. When the air bubble attaches to the solid surface there is an increase in the air/solid interface area and a decrease in the solid/water interface area. For attachment to occur the cosine of the contact angle should be less than 1 and this will be promoted if the interfacial surface tension between the air and the solid (? SV) is low.
