Abstract -A radiometric survey was carried out over clastic sediments in the immediate vicinity of some phosphatic sediments of Cretaceous age in the Wadi Qasser Al-Hallabat basin of central Syria. The objective was to explore for uranium and to define its dispersion pattern. This was based on ground radiometric surveys and geological studies. All ground surveys (using radon emanometry, track etching, gamma-ray survey and geochemistry) gave similar results, outlining the locations of the radioactive phosphatic formations in the basin, and indicating the dispersion pattern of uranium in the clastic sediments in the surrounding area. The dispersal of uranium from upper Cretaceous phosphatic formation occurs by mechanical weathering and chemical leaching by oxidizing surface waters. A rough estimate is that about one-third of the original uranium content of the Cretaceous sediments has been dispersed. Mechanical erosion is responsible for the main part of this released uranium, which now occurs in Recent sediments. However, the occurrences of spotty secondary U mineralization indicates that another small part of the available uranium must have been chemically leached out by the prevailing oxidizing waters, forming minor surficial minerals.

"Very little attention was given to the regulation of uranium mills by the Atomic Energy Control Board prior to 1974. The ore grade treated by Canadian mills in the past was in the order of 0.08 - 0.3% U and it was not difficult to keep the exposure of workers well below regulatory limits. Furthermore, uranium milling has also been substantially free of occupational illness because environmental control has been generally satisfactory (l).The discovery of higher grade ore bodies in Canada has resulted in higher radiation levels in one mill and this has partly contributed to a need for increased radiation monitoring in the mill. In addition, as greater insight is gained on the effects of radiation, the implementation of the ALARA principle is being stressed at all mills.The concept of ALARA was emphasized by the ICRP (International Committee for Radiological Protection) in 1977 and stands for '""as low as reasonably achievable'"". It is based on the premise that no proven threshold for potential effects of radiation exists and that the actual individual exposure should therefore be kept as far below the regulatory limit as possible, economic and social factors being taken into account."

"IntroductionRocks in the Kirkland Lake district form part of the Timiskaming Group, a south-facing homoclinal sequence of wackes, conglomerate, trachytic flows and pyroclastic rocks and syenitic intrusive rocks. Hewitt (1963) indicates that the thickest section, about 5 km, of the Timiskaming Group rocks is attained in Lebel Township. Several writers (Thomson, 1948; Hewitt, 1963; Hyde, 1978; Jensen, 1978; and Downes, 1979) have observed that the Timiskaming Group unconformably overlies the Keewatin volcanics, particularly along the northern contact. Recent work by Downes (1979) in McGarry and McVittie townships to the east of Kirkland Lake has shown that much of what had formerly been classified as Timiskaming actually belongs to an older group of rocks, the Larder Lake Group (Jensen 1978).General GeologyA series of fluviatile, braided-stream sedimentary rocks (Hyde, 1978) form the oldest of the three major rock suites at Kirkland Lake. Conglomerates constitute a large proportion of these sedimentary rocks and typically contain a large percentage of a variety of locally derived alkalic rock clasts as well as the distinctive red jasper iron-formation pebbles (Fig. 1a). The associated wacke units can be massive to finely bedded and are interbedded with the conglomerate. They also contain a large alkalic tuffaceous component.Interbedded with these sedimentary rocks are alkalic extrusive rocks, including tuffs, agglomerates, breccias and flows, which represent episodes of fissure and explosive crater eruption (Cooke and Moorhouse, 1969). The tuffs, although dominantly alkalic in composition, are commonly reworked and contain sedimentary features such as graded bedding, scouring and crossbedding (Fig. 1 b). The trachytic flows are massive to porphyritic and outcrop mainly east of Kirkland Lake in the adjoining townships. Altered leucitic porphyritic flows, locally referred to as red and green spotted trachytes, commonly occur."

Abstract -The volcanic-dominated Tetagouche Group in northern New Brunswick contains numerous massive-sulfide deposits and intimately associated metalliferous sediments. The massive sulfides are generally hosted by Llanvirnian-Llandeilian volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks of the Nepisiguit Falls, Patrick Brook, and Boucher Brook formations. These formations are intercalated or closely associated with rhyolitic-dacitic flows and/or domes, and minor continental tholeiites of the Flat Landing Brook Formation. Pyroclastic rocks are relatively scarce in the silicic volcanic complex. Tuffites and epiclastic sandstones, of the Nepisiguit Falls and Patrick Brook formations, respective­ ly, generally occur along the fringes of the silicic volcanic complex. The flows and tuffites are intruded by quartz- and feldspar-phyric rhyolite (porphyry) dykes, sills, and domes. Although the volume of the silicic volcanic complex is large, evidence for a previously proposed collapsed-caldera model is lacking. On the basis of host-rock type and stratigraphic position, the sediment-hosted massive sulfides have been divided into three groups: the Brunswick-, Caribou- and Halfmile Lake-type deposits. Syngenetic feeder pipes and asociated alteration zones are generally not present beneath the Caribou- and the Halfmile Lake-type deposits and, if present at all, are poorly developed underneath the Brunswick-type.

Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell has increasingly become the potential choice of zero-emission power source for portable, mobile and stationary co¬generation applications. However, technical barriers need to be overcome before its widespread commercialization; cost reduction and performance improvement including reliability are the two key areas, that can be realized through better cell/stack design and improved understanding of the transport processes occurring inside the individual cells and stacks. In this presentation, we will provide an overview of various cell/stack models that are available in the literature, their strength and weakness, and then present a comprehensive multi-species, multi-phase and multi-dimensional formulation of a single PEM fuel cell, with consistent and systematic formulation for all the regions involved, including the solid bipolar plates, gas flow channels, the electrode backing layers, the catalyst layers and the electrolyte membrane. Such a detailed approach allows us to extract sufficient information to the analysis of a stack of PEM fuel cells. Stack model will be presented that investigates the various stack designs and flow configurations, and the optimal stack design based on the present study will be described. Also some innovative cell/stack designs will be featured.

Sarcheshmeh refractory consumption rate is about 7.5 - 8 kg/ton of the produced copper, which is almost three times higher than the other smelters practice. High destruction rate of tuyere zone refractory controls vessel productivity and operational lifetime. In this research with the aid of cold model and computational fluid dynamic (CFD), melt recirculation pattern and gas - liquid plume properties in the wide range of gas blowing conditions were studied. Results revealed that in addition to the well-known mechanical refractory destruction mechanism, fast tuyere zone refractory destruction could also be related to the cold bubble cluster formation near tuyere tips and introducing severe thermal shock to the refractory surface. Removing accretion and its strong bonds to the refractories around tuyere tip, causes refractory mechanical destruction and increases tuyere diameter. Increased tuyere diameter, in turn assists gas discharge in the bubbling regime. Air blowing in the bubbling regime result in the formation of big bubble clusters, bubble breakup and back attack occurrence which all found to have major impact on the refractory lifetime. Outcomes of this research, contributed to the plant converting management, blowing hardware and instrumentation improvement.

Fuel cells with thin samaria-doped ceria (SDC) electrolyte films deposited onto an anode support using spray pyrolysis were fabricated. The SDC films were deposited onto porous NiO-YSZ substrates at deposition temperatures between 400°C and 450°C. The influence of process parameters such as deposition temperature, flow rate, type of salt and salt concentration on the quality of the film was studied. A smooth dense film was successfully deposited using the precursor cerium ammonium nitrate and samarium nitrate dissolved in butyl carbitol (33.3 vol.%), 2-methoxy-l-propanol (33.3 vol.%), and ethanol (33.3 vol.%) solvent mixture. A deposition rate of 125 nm/h was achieved.

Design and construction of underground openings are associated with many uncertainties with regard to input data. In the construction process of underground openings various levels of risks exist and these affect the safety and profitability of the project. The development of underground openings can be broadly categorized into three major phases of data collection, design, and construction. A significant level of uncertainty is associated with some of the key parameters involved in the aforementioned development phases. Moreover, it is very difficult to evaluate and quantify the effects of uncertainties on the underground project construction process. Additionally, the interactions between important risk elements are typically not well understood. The intention of this study is to develop a general risk model for underground opening projects located in soils and weak rock masses. The goal of the research is to identify and quantify important geotechnical risk elements. Moreover, a weighting procedure will be proposed for the identified risk elements. Finally, all important risk elements will be assembled into a general model with emphasis on geotechnical parameters. The final objective of this study is to apply the proposed model to a real underground project scenario and verify it for actual field conditions. The proposed model, once calibrated properly, will provide a useful support tool for the decision making process.

"THE November issue of the Bulletin carried in it ""Origin of the New Bruns1viclc Gypsum Deposits"" by J. Olaf Sund. This paper was a digested account of a Master's thesis at the University of New Brunswick which was a very useful compendium of information of gyp-sum in New Brunswick. It was a warded the President' s Gold .Medal and the First Prize in the Graduates' Section of the Students' Essay Competition. The present writer presents his congratulations to the winner of the competition. At the same time he must comment on the use of certain terms and on certain conclusions presented in the paper.The term ""unconformable"" has been used in several places in the paper to describe the relationship of gypsum to anhydrite in various deposits in New Brunswick in a sense which is quite alien to the accepted meaning. It has long been known tl1at the gypsum at the surface or near the surface in deposits in the Atlantic Provinces has come from hydration of anhydrite by surface and ground waters. The gyp-sum must be looked upon then as an alteration or even a weathering product. It cannot in this sense be called ""unconformable"" and thus arguments using the word in the accepted sense are invalid."

This paper presents a three-tier web-based GIS application that uses Java Server Page (JSP), Java Servlet and relational database to manage performance monitoring and reporting in the oil sands mining industry. It is a real-time Earth Structure Performance Monitoring System (ESPMS), which allows the user to record and store instrumentation monitoring readings as well as technical observations and instrumentation installation documentations into a complete relational database. The ESPMS introduces the advantages of precise field record keeping, due diligence, security, consistency and completeness while at the same time simplifying the task of reporting. ESPMS combines web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping and data management to facilitate the collection, organization, retrieval, reporting and communication of the vast amounts of monitoring data related to mining and tailings engineering associated with site investigation and construction information. ESPMS utilizes web-based GIS technology to incorporate referenced aerial photographs, Energy, Mines and Resources (EMR) maps or AutoCAD drawings as a base map for the monitoring site. It dynamically creates and administers all instrumentation monitoring locations and reading frequencies. It enables the user to collect and manage the data associated with an unlimited number of reading events. It provides the designer with real-time monitoring data (what, why, when, how), thereby allowing them to make early adjustments to design protocols or procedures, or to take remedial action(s) regarding the subject earth structure under construction or after completion. It provides more cost-effective reporting and data sharing through the Internet. It improves security on data entry and eliminates unauthorized data changes. It allows better integration of graphics and illustrations with numerical data files. It is capable of managing the continually expanding workload resulting from new and larger structures in the oil sands or other mineral mining industries. The ESPMS facilitates easier data gathering for preparation of as-built and after-built or regulatory reports, etc. It enables quick location of the interested instruments and summarization of the performance of the instruments. It enables one to visualize performance data and QA/QC construction test results spatially on any given cross-section. Data can be exported to MS Excel for detailed analysis and to evaluate the stability of the earth structures.

The Kamioka Zinc Smelter was converted from the jarosite process to the goethite process in the year 2000. The reasons for the conversion of the process were that the silica content of the raw material increased and the iron content decreased. The silica easily turns to a gel in sulfuric acid solutions and this causes the solid-liquid separation characteristics to deteriorate. The basic behavior of silica in sulfuric acid solution was investigated and it was found that the goethite process is the most suitable to effectively separate and remove silica from solution. Furthermore, Fe has the capability to remove elements such as Ge that have an adverse effect on zinc electrolysis. This means that, when the Fe content of the raw material decreased, the impurity removal capability also decreased and there was a risk of a build-up of impurities in the process. Iron precipitates in many forms in sulfuric acid solutions. The capability to remove elements such as Ge differs depending on the compound precipitated. Goethite has a higher capability than jarosite to remove elements such as Ge. In this report, the results of applying the process established by investigations of the basic behavior of Fe, silica and Ge in the zinc refining plant are presented.

"This paper reviews the development of new designs in extensible and high angle conveyor systems. These aim to overcome the limitations of prior alternative concepts in design. The application of such systems in strip, terrace, open pit and mountain mining is reviewed. IntroductionTruck haulage costs have tended to escalate in recent years. This has been primarily due to operations generally moving to greater depths with associated increases in haul distances . Periods of high inflation rates have also been experienced for diesel fuel oil, tires and other petroleum based products. Recent international political events have tended to regenerate concerns over future oil supply and price stability. For such reasons, conveyor based transport is becoming increasingly attractive. Truck haulage maintains an inherent flexibility and improvements continue to be made in performance and capacity. Doubts must exist, however, over the extent to which further economies of scale may be made. Conversely, belt conveyor systems do not suffer this constraint and have the following advantages:• Electrical power is used and the specific energy consumption is at least half that required for truck haulage.• Operating costs and skilled labour requirements are lower.• Equipment has superior longevity and is ""inflation proof"" .• Access roads can be steeper and narrower in most mine environments, reducing construction and maintenance costs.• They are less prone to breakdown and bad weather delays .• In long haul, high capacity operations conveyors can save substantially on capital cost.• Environmental impact is improved with reduced noise level, dust and atmospheric pollution. Although conveyor systems are less flexible in operation than truck haulage and although a breakdown in any part of the system can immobilize the total system, mechanical availabilities of + 80% are constantly reported by large operators. There would appear in the past to have been some prejudice against conveyor systems in hard rock mines due to lack of experience. Apparent reservations would apply equally 10 underground coal mines, yet practically all of these mines (and some underground hard rock mines) find conveyor systems more economical than other transport systems."

The mechanical behaviour of Opalinus Clay, an indurated over-consolidated argillaceous rock, is heavily influenced by the presence of preferably oriented bedding planes. The objective of this study is to illustrate a new modeling approach aimed at capturing the bedding-induced anisotropy of Opalinus Clay as observed in the laboratory and in situ. The combined finite-discrete element method (FEM/DEM) is employed as the main simulation tool. FEM/DEM is a numerical method that models material damage processes by explicitly considering fracture nucleation and propagation. A transversely isotropic elastic constitutive law is used to account for different elastic property values in the direction parallel and perpendicular to the layering, while strength anisotropy is captured using a directional cohesive fracture model. Quantitative calibration and validation of the model is based on laboratory results of indirect tensile tests and uniaxial compression tests. Emergent strength and deformation properties, together with the simulated damage mechanisms, are shown to be in good agreement with experimental observations. Preliminary results relative to the analysis of a circular tunnel show that the approach is able to reproduce the main Excavation Damaged Zone (EDZ) formation mechanisms as observed in the field.

Numerous rock blasting design methodologies have been developed over the years, relating either to the primary objectives of blasting, such as the size distribution of the blasted material, or to its undesirable side effects, such as damage to the remaining rock mass. All existing methodologies, while of use, do have serious shortcomings. The question remains whether further improvements can be achieved in the field of practical rock blasting engineering. One approach that seems to hold promise is the relatively new matrix-based rock engineering systems (RES) methodology. It has been conceptually demonstrated that RES could be efficiently adapted to blasting. A brief overview of rock blasting design techniques and their main shortcomings is followed by the basic concepts governing rock engineering systems and a discussion on their pertinence to blasting. The paper concludes with a review of current efforts to develop a useful practical blast design tool using RES. SOMMAIRE Le potentiel d?application des systèmes d?ingénierie du roc aux tirs à l?explosif. De nombreuses méthodologies de conception d?abattage du roc à l?explosif ont été développées au cours des années, qui ont adressé soit les principaux objectifs des tirs, comme par exemple la granulométrie du matériel dynamité, soit ses effets secondaires indésirables, tels les dommages au massif rocheux. Toutes les méthodes existantes fonctionnent dans une certaine mesure et sont utiles - elles sont cependant pour ainsi dire toutes affectées par des limitations ou défauts plus ou moins sévères. La question demeure quant à savoir si des améliorations supplémentaires peuvent être apportées dans le domaine de la conception pratique des opérations d?abattage du roc à l?explosif. Une approche alternative qui semble prometteuse est celle relativement récente des systèmes matriciels d?ingénierie du roc (?Rock Engineering Systems?, ou RES). Il a été démontré de manière conceptuelle que les RES ont le potentiel d?être adaptés aux opérations de sautage. Une brêve revue des principales techniques de conception des tirs à l?explosif est suivie d?un énoncé des principes de base gouvernant les RES, ainsi que d?une discussion sur leur pertinence aux opérations de tir. "The need to continually improve efficiency and lower costs in mining operations is of paramount importance to all concerned in the industry. Mining operations are constantly testing new methods and equipment in order to lower costs and improve productivity. Equipment suppliers strive to fulfill the demands of the mines through improved design and innovative ideas for productivity increases. In some cases, however, an increase in productivity does not require new equipment design, but rather the application of an existing mining method into different operating parameters. Such is the case in applying longhole methods to narrow vein ore deposits.Bulk mining methods have long been recognized as efficient, low-cost alternatives in narrow vein operations. Typically, shrinkage and some cut-and-fill methods are employed. The shortfall of these methods is the tendency to be labour intensive. The demand for miners skilled in these methods far outweighs their availability. Consequently, labour-efficient methods have to be employed to fill the void. The application of longhole drilling techniques to narrow vein deposits is one such method.IntroductionPercussion longhole drilling evolved in Canada in the early 1940s. Prior to percussion drilling, blast holes were drilled using diamond drill equipment. Jack Gardner, of Gardner Steel, began testing with carbide percussion bits and extension drill steel in applications where diamond drills had been previously employed. Percussion drilling equipment proved to be considerably more productive and cost-efficient. The experiment eventually led to the replacement of diamond drills in this application.Over the years, the percussion methods were improved, with particular emphasis on the equipment used. Rifle bar rotation machines evolved to independent rotation. Bar and arm set ups evolved into self-contained mobile drill carriers that increased productivity while reducing the physical labour. The introduction of hydraulics further improved efficiency and production figures. Today, it is not uncommon to see fully computerized jumbos in production longhole drilling applications. These machines represent the ""state-of-the-art"" in longhole drilling equipment.Production longhole drilling is considered to be one of the most efficient bulk mining methods in use today. Production statistics normally exhibit low-cost, efficient ore extraction. As a rule, longhole (blasthole) methods are associated with substantial ore deposits. These methods have exhibited high production figures and low mining costs.Over the past decade, long hole methods have been applied to several narrow vein deposits. These applications have proven that, given the right parameters, longhole methods will produce the same advantages in narrow vein deposits as are seen in more conventional applications."

"ForewordTHE Arctic Archipelago and northern Greenland contain an orogenic region that is as much as 300 miles wide and over 1,400 miles long. It occupies much of what was formerly classified with the Arctic Plains and grouped with other plains and lowlands of Canada as one main geological division. It is proposed that this folded region be designated the Innuitian Region and be recognized as one of the main geological divisions of Canada.Canada's main geological divisions (see Geological Survey of Canada, 1947) have been considered as consisting of a central shield, largely surrounded by plains that separate it from eastern and western mountains. The plains include the Interior Plains, the St. Lawrence Lowlands, the Arctic Plains or Low-lands, and the Hudson Bay Lowland, which is in the central part of the Shield. Plains and mountains are, strictly speaking, physiographic terms, but because mountains are generally folded regions and plains are generally made of undisturbed strata, such terms are useful vehicles to express the fundamental make-up of the land. Nevertheless, it is preferable to use the terms Appalachian and Cordilleran 'Regions' rather than 'Mountains', as those geological divisions are not exclusively made of mountains.Because of the lack of more definite information, the 'Arctic Plains' have included, in the past, regions with plateaux two to four thousand feet above the nearby sea, mountain ranges reaching approximately 10,000 feet above sea level, and regions of folded strata."

"The Golden Manitou mine is in the northeast quarter of Bourlamaque township, Abitibi county, Quebec. During the summer of 1937 a body of gold-silver-zinc ore was outlined in a series of diamond drill holes located to the west of an old copper-zinc showing in the property of Quebec Manitou Mines, Limited. In 1938, a shaft was sunk and the orebody further explored from levels at depths of 210 and 360 feet.In 1941 the western half of the Quebec Manitou property was acquired by a new company, Golden Manitou Mines, Limited, and the installation of a mining and milling plant was at once undertaken. Milling started in August 1942. The following is a summary of production to December 31, 1946:The orebodies are sulphide replacements in a sericite schist shear zone. They vary in width from 8 feet to 65 feet and range in length up to 850 feet . Much of the ore is of the 'massive sulphides' type . The sulphide minerals in the ore are pyrite and sphalerite with minor quantities of .galena, tennantite, chalcopyrite, and arsenopyrite. Native silver (as wire and leaf silver) has been found in vugs and as coatings along fractures. In one section of the mine a few specks of gold were observed. Spectrographic analysis of ore samples has indicated the presence of zinc silicate."

"The technology known as Expert Systems is being used within the minerals industry in a wide variety of problem areas. Applications include diagnosis, prediction, training, monitoring and control. Expert Systems provide a way to program computers to imitate human thinking. The construction of such systems is a straight-forward task that can be quickly learned by novices but can require a lifetime to master.To assist in the understanding and utility of this technology, a special manual bas been prepared which operates on a microcomputer under the MS-Windows environment. The manual covers all aspects of Artificial Intelligence of relevance to Expert Systems. A hypertext system allows users to probe as d•~ply as needed to achieve understanding or to simply skim the surface of the knowledge to obtain a quick overview of subjects. The manual was developed under the sponsorship of the Mineral Sciences Laboratory of CANMET and is available from the Mining and Mineral Process Engineering Department at the University of British Columbia. Annual updates are planned to keep abreast of new developments in this rapidly changing technology.
