A property based dynamic model of flotation was built and validated for training purposes. The model is based on the work of the AMIRA P9 project. The recovery of each particle with composition and size is calculated in a given simulation step. The model takes into account machine and operational parameters such as air flowrate and froth height. The model was created using fullscale test data on Pyhlisalmi Cu-Zn-pyrite ore with flotation kinetics of multiphase particles determined. Simulation and validation shows that model can predict the dynamic behavior of the process accurately enough for training purposes.

"Coal is one of Alberta's major fuel resources, but its distribution, especially in the flat plains region, has been somewhat obscured by surficial deposits. After a period of neglect, easily strippable plains coal is presently approaching a position of dominance in electrical power production, a position it is likely to retain for a number of decades in the face of strong competition from hydro and nuclear power. Accordingly, the Research Council of Alberta has undertaken an inventory survey of the province's supplies of this resource.In the southern part of the province and in the north-central forest-fringe area, some strippable coal is found in the Belly River Formation and its equivalents, but major strippable coal reserves in large areas of central Alberta occur within the Edmonton Formation. The survey is planned on a reconnaissance scale, drilling test holes at 2-mile intervals in selected large areas. It appears to show that, in well-settled regions, large reserves of strippable coal are only to be expected where they have long been known; major presently unknown bodies of coal must be sought in unsettled regions or at depths too great for strip mining. However, such bodies might still be economically competitive with hydro and nuclear power in the production of electric power for some time to come."

The merit of reduction-in-area as a criterion of quality in metals is shown to lie in its influence on breaking stress, but the virtue of elongation is not easy to find. In order to assess the value of elongation, either as a measure of quality or as a guide to design, it will be necessary to separate the overall de-formation occurring in tension tests from the localized deformation associated with localized reduction in area. The obstacles to a successful solution of this problem have been shown to be more formidable than is generally appreciated, and a new solution to the problem has been suggested. This solution involves a de-vice by which an electric circuit is broken when the particular value of strain is reached that is to be taken as the point of separation between general and localized deformation. The report presents results from a number of tests on both low-carbon and alloy steels. "The Preston East Dome gold mine is in the southeastern part of Porcupine district, Ontario, 5 miles southeast of Timmins, and immediately south of the property of Dome Mines, Limited.The claims now owned by this Company were originally staked in 1909. After the property had remained dormant for many years, the present Company was organized in 1936 to resume development operations. Two shafts had been sunk: at the time of the early work on the claims, but lateral work from these failed to reach the ore deposits. A successful diamond drilling campaign undertaken under the direction of D. G. H. Wright, however, was followed by the sinking of a five-compartment shaft arid the erection of a mill. From the start of operations to the end of 1944, 1,292,000 tons of ore averaging $11.60 in gold a ton have been mined.An outstanding feature in this mine is the occurrence of the major gold deposits in quartz porphyry intrusives, though minor deposits are also found in the adjacent Keewatin volcanics. Most of the ore occurs in fractures, but the filling was accompanied by varying degrees of replacement of schistose wall-rocks. The ore deposits may be classified as:"

Continuous development of technologies has been self-explanatory for Outokumpu Technology's engineers for decades. The aim in the development has always been the improvement of profitability of the copper production but also the sustainability of the processing i.e. high copper recovery, low external fossil based energy utilization, high emission captures and of course low operation and investment costs. Outokumpu Technology's long-term view of the development is a change towards continuous processes and elimination of number of unit operations in smelting i.e. elimination of possible sources of emissions. Outokumpu blister smelting processes i.e. Outokumpu Direct-to-Blister Flash Smelting and Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting have shown excellent operational results during the years of operation and it is expected that soon more than 10 % of the world primary copper is produced by these technologies. The paper will give some background of this development trend.

"Current trends of increased size, complexity, and automation of surface mining equipment necessitate more comprehensive and objective techniques for equipment comparison and selection. The field of reliability analysis provides tools to generate quantitative bases for maintenance and reliability aspects of such comparisons. Results from statistical analyses of failure and repair time data are used to perform the comparison. A case study is presented which analyzes five machines of two different technologies and three different designs.IntroductionThe surface mining industry is currently faced with a rapid evolution in production equipment. The more obvious trend in this evolution is the steady introduction of even larger machines. Parallel, and complementary, to this increase in size is the introduction or adaptation of new technologies. Together, these two trends result in new surface mining equipment designs; these designs are often more complex and may feature technologies that have yet to be proven for the application or at the scale they are now fielded.The prospect of significant automation of open pit equipment is also bound to add complexity to future equipment designs. Semi-automated features, such as drilling controllers (Aquila, 2000), have already been commercialized. Fully autonomous haul trucks have been demonstrated in open pit mines (Jackson and Zoschke, 2000). Design concepts for comprehensive teleoperation of open pit operations have been formulated (Lipsett, 1998).With this rapid availability and deployment of new technology and equipment, managers and maintainers are faced with a multitude of decisions regarding what equipment to acquire and what maintenance strategies to implement. In light of this evolution in mining equipment, it is necessary to develop better methods for making equipment management decisions (Dessureault et al., 1999; Paraszczak, 1999). The incentive for development of such techniques is that a large portion of an open pit mine’s operating cost is maintenance related, as shown in Table 1."

"The Athabasca region forms part of the Churchill province of the Canadian Shield and is underlain by an Archean or Aphebian assemblage of rocks that underwent severe metamorphism and granitization during the Hudsonian orogeny (1750-1950 m.y. ago). In places, the eroded orogen is overlain by unmetamorphosed cover rocks (in-cluding the Martin and Athabasca formations) of probable Paleohelikian age. Basic dykes cut all the rocks of the region.There are innumerable vein-type pitchblende deposits and many syngenetic occurrences of uraninite in crystalline basement rocks. Evidence is presented to show that pitch-blende was emplaced during the final stages of the Hud-sonian granitization and followed the crystallization of syngenetic uraninite transitionally. In terms of P-T condi-tions, the pitchblende deposits belong essentially to Lindgren's mesothermal group.Based on the postulated uranium metallogenesis, the possibilities of finding further deposits of pitchblende and other types of uranium deposits are discussed."

"Conventional single heading track drifting in the hard rock mining industry has not shown any significant improvements in advance rates, despite the advent of modern track jumbos and igh speed muck handling systems .This paper presents Kiena 's experience in using a 7 ft 2 in. diameter larva Mark 6 Tunnel-Boring Machine (TBM) for driving 6000ft of drift.IntroductionKiena Gold Mines is located about 5 miles west of the town of Val d'Or, Quebec, approximately 300 miles north of Montreal. The mine commenced production in October 1981 and has gone through various expansions of ore production with 287 916 metric tonnes in 1982 to reach 453 800 metric tonnes in 1986.Due to the majority of claims being covered by a lake, a grassroots exploration drive of remote areas of the property was required to allow diamond drilling on a yearly basis. High speed sequential excavation methods (SEM) of single heading drifting in the mining industry has not progressed much in the past 20 years despite the advent of electric-hydraulic jumbos, Haggloader and Hagglund type cars. Certain examples of record SEM drifting advances have been performed in the past but only under very specific ground and cost conditions."

THE Myrtle group of mining claims is situated on Barkerville mountain in the Cariboo mining district of British Columbia, west of the old mining town of Barkerville. An 1,800-foot adit, known as the Shamrock tunnel, was driven in 1935-36 from the Barkerville road and in the general direction of the Myrtle group. It was proposed to enlarge this adit to more convenient section, extend it 2,500 feet int0 Myrtle ground, and from there drive a main entry 3,000 feet along the length of the group. Several laterals were also to be driven off this main entry as part of the tunnel schedule. It was thus originally proposed to drive 5,500 feet of new adit and 1,800 feet of laterals, a total of 7,300 feet of new work. Work was commenced with a bulldozer on April 21st, 1941, cutting a bench on the hillside for a plant site. The power plant was ready for operation on August 8th. Slashing and re-timbering of the old adit rook longer than was expected. It was found that 57 per cent of the length required timbering, chiefly by fore-poling, and there was also trouble in several sections with swelling ground. First round in the new face was taken on September 17th, when a 2-shift daily schedule was commenced. Due to delays in delivery of electrical equipment, it was not possible to add the third shift until November 14th. From then on, a 3-shift daily schedule was maintained with the exception of holidays and fortnightly change Sundays until August 1st, 1942, when shortage of labour caused the dropping of a shift. All work was suspended on August 14th. The ground through which the tunnel passed was such that the driving was often interrupted by the need of protective timber at the face. Further, crews were continuously employed timbering behind the face, and in maintenance of timbered sections in swelling ground. Roughly 980 feet of the new workings are now timbered, about 21 per cent of the total.

Due to the current lack of sufficient occupational hazards supervisory staff in China, an occupational hazards supervision regulatory framework is proposed, based on the cloud. Data on respirable dust, noise, heat, toxic and hazardous substances and protection facilities are uploaded to private cloud computing data and service centers to build an occupational hazards supervision system. This system promotes occupational hazards governance. Complex reports are generated. Through the establishment of an occupational hazard supervision data threshold, the dynamic regulation of occupational hazards is accomplished. The main characteristics of this approach are low cost, ease of expansion and maintenance, and strong performance.

Field experimental cells were constructed in 2007 to assess the performance of different cover scenarios for the reclamation of the Parc 1 tailings disposal facility at the Westwood-Doyon Mine site (Abitibi, Quebec). Three configurations of cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBEs) with different thicknesses and material types for the moisture retention layer (MRL) were studied. MRL with 80 cm till, 40 cm till, and 40 cm clayey silt were used for cell nos. 2, 3, and 5, respectively. The capillary barrier layer (CBL) and drainage and protection layer (DPL) of the CCBE consisted of 30 cm gravel. A reference cell without cover was also constructed to compare the geochemical performance of the CCBEs. Due to an unexpected flooding in the leachate exit area of the cells in spring 2008, the cell instrumentation for hydrogeotechnical monitoring was postponed to spring 2009. Changes with time in volumetric water content, suction, soil oxygen concentration, and temperature were measured at different depths. This paper presents and discusses preliminary results obtained from spring 2009 to autumn 2010. In all cases, the degree of saturation Sr is lower in the CBL than in the MRL, indicating the presence of capillary barrier effects at the interface of these layers. Cell nos. 2 and 5 showed hydrogeotechnical behavior typical of an effective CCBE, with Sr maintained above 85% in the MRL and lower than 30?50% in the DPL and CBL. Based on the obtained results, and as expected, MRL thickness and the type of construction material used appear to affect the hydrogeotechnical behavior of the CCBE. Oxygen concentration profiles through the CCBEs were used to estimate the oxygen flux, and results indicate that cell nos. 2 and 3 performed better than cell no. 3. CCBE performance is currently being investigated using the geochemical monitoring data.

"IntroductionTHE PROBLEM of producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal and other raw materials is of increasing importance in Canada as well as in the United States. This is due, to a large extent, to the continually increasing demand for gasoline and other liquid products which are now obtained solely from petroleum. The United States has reached a position where domestic supplies of crude petroleum must be augmented by imports and Canada is still a long way from self-sufficiency. In the event of war, there might well be an immediate need to find supplementary sources of liquid fuels. It is, therefore, expedient to consider alternative sources of production now -well in advance of the time when supplies of petroleum may prove inadequate to meet requirements.The purpose of the present paper is to give a short review of the history of liquid fuel production from coal, to describe briefly the research sponsored by the Federal Government on the coal hydrogenation process, and finally to evaluate the present status and future trend of the synthetic fuel industry, with special reference to necessary research work.History of the Oil-From-Coal IndustryThe history -of coal liquefaction began in 1913, in Germany, with the work of Frederick Bergius. "IntroductionONE OF :THE most effective methods by which the construction industry is combatting mounting building costs is by making increased use of lightweight materials, thus reducing the dead load to be carried •by structures. This applies to non-metallic materials as well as to metallic ones, and particular attention has been given to developing lightweight aggregates for use in concrete.The use of lightweight aggregates is not new and, in fact, dates back to the Roman Empire, when pumice was used in the walls and domes of the Roman buildings. More recently, and up to a decade or so ago, the demand for these aggregates was met from deposits of volcanic cinders, pumice, scoria, etc., and from the by-products of blast furnaces and coal burning boilers. However, these sources of supply are no longer sufficient to meet the demand, for transportation costs pretty well restrict the use of the natural lightweight aggregates to the western cordillera regions where the deposits of these materials occur, and the use of expanded slag aggregates to the areas neighbouring the plants where slags are produced. As for cinders, the supply has been greatly reduced by the conversion of industry to fuel oil, natural gas, and powdered coal, and the large stockpiles which existed previously have been pretty well exhausted.Industry's approach to the problem of a decreasing supply, in the face of an increasing demand, has been characteristically direct. The solution has been to construct plants whose sole .purpose is to produce economically an acceptable light-weight aggregate from materials close at hand."

The use of spectrographic semi-quantitative analysis has recently been of considerable value in establishing the geological relationships in a complicated orebody. The principal minerals found in the Mount Pleasant orebody are cassiterite, stannite, sphalerite, molybdenite, wolframite, chalcopyrite and galena, associated with arsenopyrite, pyrite and fluorite. In addition to the large number of minerals, a further com-plication is the non-uniform distribution of the economic minerals, with one mineral being the only one present in major amounts in one area and another mineral being predominant in another area. At the same time, all minerals are present to a minor extent throughout the deposit. This heterogeneity made it advisable to analyse all exploration samples thoroughly. Analysis by conventional means would have resulted in prohibitive costs. By the use of emission spectroscopy, however, it was possible to obtain, quickly and relatively inexpensively, a reasonably comprehensive picture of the orebody un-der investigation.

"Air-photo interpretation and photogrammetry are two of the most effective and versatile tools available to the petroleum industry. The techniques have proven successful in providing solutions to many of the problems encountered in the design and construction of oilfield projects.Although most technical personnel are aware that air-photo interpretation and photogrammetry are useful in the selection of routes for roads and pipelines, few realize the true scope of the techniques or the wide variety of areas in which they are applicable.This paper briefly describes the principles involved, and reviews a number of typical applications of particular interest to petroleum companies. Excessive detail is avoided, rather the emphasis is placed upon the wide spectrum of possible applications. It is stressed that on-the-ground examination generally is a necessary adjunct, and that there are certain limitations to the techniques discussed.Properly applied, however, air-photo interpretation and photogrammetry can offer significant advantages in terms of time, flexibility, secrecy and economy."

Evolution over decades and progress over last five years have been made in many topics of interests to rock mechanics, geosciences, physics, and multi-disciplinary interactions in underground research laboratories and development facilities, as well as in underground energy recoveries and environmental assessments. Rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering advances are associated with quantifications of disturbed/damaged zones and rock alternation and bursting processes and creation of underground spaces and accesses associated with deepening of shafts and lengthening of tunnels. Geophysics and earth sciences advances are associated with continuing collections of seismic, electromagnetic, and gravitational data and conducting various thermal, hydrological, mechanical, chemical, and biological investigations, both separately, simultaneously, and in different coupled ways. Astroparticle and underground physics advances are associated with many long term experiments to detect rare events and needs for increasing larger and deeper halls to accommodate next generation detectors, shielings, and isolations. There are also increasing interesting in underground settings to explore multidisciplinary and inter-disciplinary sciences and technologies. Energy and environmental sciences and assessments have evolved from traditional oil and gas focuses to recent activities associated with green resources and alternative recovery/disposal strategies. The evolution and progress of these interdependent and related fields are discussed in this quadrennial Congress.

Considerable thought and discussion had been devoted toward provision for increased milling capacity at the Allenby concentrator of The Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company operations as early as 1940. During the war, plans for the installation of an additional grindi.ng unit were formulated but were not carried out. It took considerable time after the war to prepare the mine again for its highest rate of production since, with the scarcity of men, development work had been sacrificed in favour of maximum ore shipments. In order to prepare for the expected competitive market in copper, the matter of increasing the capacity of the concentrator was again given serious attention. As ore became available in the mine and the output of the mill was increased, limitations for a satisfactory recovery were observed, due to the overloaded condition of the classifier units at the higher tonnages. From a metallurgical standpoint, the ore from the Copper Mountain mine had always been difficult to treat on account of the finely disseminated character of much of the mineralization and the difficulty of grinding to the desired fineness. This trouble has become aggravated with time as an increasing amount of wall-rock has diluted the ore and lower grade orebodies have been mined. It therefore has been, and is, the practice at the concentrator to maintain the maximum amount of reduction in size of material fed to the flotation units as is possible for the daily tonnage to be milled. This means that all the grinding units are operated for the maximum possible time, and that the classifiers are regulated to return as much feed ?as possible to the mills. The number of tons to be milled for ?the day is determined by the concentrator superintendent after ascertaining the availability of ore from the mine, the condition of the concentrator ore bins, and the need for repairs in the rolls plant. In order to maintain the tonnage des1red, hourly estimates are made of the rate of grinding by weighing the amount of ore contained on one foot of each of the belts conveying the feed to the various ball-mills, and adjustments are made accordingly.

"As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. In underground coal mining operations, gas content in a coal seam is used to assess the risk of coal and gas outbursts. To estimate the gas content, a number of systems have been developed, however issues remain about the rapidness and accuracy of these systems. To address these issues, a new and improved system has been developed that includes a sampling-while-drilling unit for coal sampling, a coal canister, an underground-based portable measurement unit, a surface-based measurement apparatus, and gas content calculation software. The system has been successfully applied in underground coal mines at Huainan, China. This new, rapid and accurate system, its main components and field trials are described in this paper.

The Inconceivable Wealth propaganda goes on apace. Premier King, at Vancouver, has stated that we still have, untouched, natural resources, "beyond the wildest dreams." Principal Currie, in an address before the Canadian Society in New York said that Canada's resources, "are as yet merely scratched and it is not possible to compute her almost fabulous natural wealth." Mr. Meighen, in the last election campaign announced that, "under the providence of God, Canada is more richly endowed, perhaps, than any other country in the world." Four years ago a despatch was sent to Premier King "on behalf of" this Institute advising him that "Inconceivable Wealth" in minerals in this country was assured. This was made as a statement ~f "incontrovertible fact." Specifically, this despatch stated that this wealth was on such a scale that the mining industry would in the future lead all others in this country. This inventory is still in effect as far as this Institute is concerned.
