THIS paper is chiefly a description of the improvements in dust control chat have been brought about in the assay office grinding room at Wright-Hargreaves. The fume exhaust systems are briefly included because they also are important to the health of the employees. There are three chief factors which determine the efficiency of a dust control system: First, the amount of time and thought spent in designing it. Second, how close! y it is kept up to date with the growth of the plant-a system that is adequate for the number of machines operating when it is installed may fall short of fulfilling its purpose as the plant expands. Third, unless someone is held directly responsible, a system is likely to get out of repair and gradually lose its efficiency-this can easily be detected by regular dust surveys. In designing the present system at Wright-Hargreaves, the object kept in mind was to reduce the dust concentration of all operations to a safe limit, chat is, well under 300 particles per cubic centimecer of air. By doing this, a condition would be attained chat would make it possible to discontinue the use of respirators, which at best are not very comfortable and do not remove all of the hazardous fine-dust particles.

The rheology artificial mixtures of bitumen with fine quartz of varying bitumen content, as well as actual oil sand ores, was investigated under different physicochemical conditions (pH, temperature). All rheological measurements were conducted using a Haake Rotovisco VT550 rotational viscometer, connected to a fixture specifically designed to measure properties of settling suspensions. It was found that at low bitumen contents (1 %, wt.) the pH of the slurries was the most important parameter that controlled the rheology of quartz-bitumen slurries. At higher bitumen contents (10%, wt.), it was a combination of high temperature and high pH that gave the lowest apparent viscosities and yield stresses of the model mixtures. These model observations correlated well with the rheology data obtained for slurries of actual oil sand ores. The overall results were discussed in terms of aggregation-dispersion phenomena between bitumen and mineral particles.

The Ambatovy Joint Venture comprises an operating lateritic nickel mine, ore slurry pipeline, pressure acid leach plant and nickel refinery in Madagascar. The hydrometallurgical process selected by Sherritt for treatment of the Ambatovy ore is a long-term, sustainable approach to producing nickel. Sulphur, used to prepare hydrogen sulphide, which is used to produce mixed sulphide intermediate, is recovered in the refinery as ammonium sulphate fertilizer. Additional sulphur is used to generate sulphuric acid for treatment of the ore in the high pressure acid leach (HPAL) step; fossil fuel consumption is minimized by using the heat generated from the exothermic reaction between sulphur and oxygen in the acid plant to produce power and steam. Steam consumption is minimized by design of efficient flashing and preheat systems for HPAL, while the high temperature of the HPAL step serves to minimize acid consumption. Fossil fuel consumption by the operation as a whole is further minimized by locating the leach plant and refinery near the port of Toamasina and utilizing a 220 km slurry pipeline to transport ore from the mine to the leach plant. In addition, Ambatovy has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability programs such as the biodiversity management program at the mine and local procurement in Madagascar. In this paper, the hydrometallurgical process for nickel and cobalt recovery from Ambatovy ore is described, along with highlights of Ambatovy’s approach to sustainability in Madagascar.

Presently,Many long-wall fully-mechanized faces in shallow depth coal seams are below room and pillar goaf in Shendong mining area. When the working face is advanced out of concentrated coal pillar in upper room and pillar goaf, strong strata behaviors often cause support crushing accident. Aiming at a support crushing accident which happened in Shigetai coal mine of Shenhua group in Shendong mining area, this paper analyses the stress transfer process while mining out of concentrated coal pillar by numerical simulation software FLAC3D. According to the feature, simplifying the roof of upper room and pillar goaf as supporting-beam structure explains mechanism of large area collapse in room and pillar goaf roof. Based on the feature of supporting-beam structure, deep-hole blasting concentrated coal pillar technology is proposed to control the strong strata behaviors in Shigetai coal mine. The blasting control effect is confirmed through characteristics of strata behaviors, growth circumstance of ground crack and multi-point extensometer monitoring results. By using control technology, Shigetai coal mine has been successfully avoided support crushing accident.

The influence of natural electric currents, induced in the earth by changes in the earth's magnetic field, on the electric logging of boreholes has not always been recognized. Measurements made with fixed electrodes of changes in the vertical potential gradient in a hole near Calmar, Alberta, have indicated the effect of earth currents related to magnetic disturbances. It is found that appreciable errors in self-potential logging could arise during periods of magnetic storms, but the precise pat-tern of disturbance in any area seems to depend on the local structural conditions. As the amplitude of the natural earth currents increases toward the auroral zone, it is suggested that periods of magnetic disturbance be avoided, if possible, when electric logs are taken in the northern part of the western sedimentary basin. "1. INTRODUCTIONMy talk today will discuss a new development in the thickening of slurries and clarification of waste water - the Enviro-Clear thickener. Several industrial installations of the thickener have been made in North America in the following applications:1.,water clarification in sugar beet processing plants.2.,separation of pregnant liquors from solid wastes following acid leaching in uranium mills3.,clarification of waste water from coal treatment plants as described in a paper in the June 1975 transactions of the SME entitled ""Application and Utilization of the Enviro Clear Thickener in a U.S. Steel Coal Preparation Plant"" by A.A. Terchnik, D.T. King and J.S. Anderson.2. HISTORYThe application of the Enviro-Clear thickener can be traced back to the filing of U.S. Patent 3523889 in 1970 by the inventor F. Eis. The claims of this patent are shown in Slide 1.The new concept was developed for sugar beet processing by the Spreckels Division of Amstar Corporation, and several such thickeners have subsequently been installed in various sugar beet plants. The Enviro-Clear Co. or New York took over the world-wide manufacturing and marketing of the thickener. Experience in the sugar beet industry indicated that the Enviro-Clear thickener volume requirements could be reduced to as low as one tenth that of a conventional type thickener. Various coal samples were supplied by U.S. Steel Research Laboratories for testing. The tests indicated that feed rate loadings of 3 gpm/ft.2 could be obtained by the Enviro-Clear thickener. Such results led to several industrial applications in the coal industry. Subsequently other branches of the mineral processing industry have come to learn of the possibilities of using this thickener. Slide 2 shows a list of commercial Enviro-Clear installations at the end of 1975."

A considerable part of the sulphuric acid requirements of the Aluminum Company of Canada's Arvida smelter comes from the burning of 180-200 tons per day of zinc '"'sulphide concentrates in a 22-ft.-diam-eter fluidized bed roaster. The plant and its operation were fully de-scribed in a publication that appeared about ten year ago (1). A simplified flowsheet of the roasting and gas-cleaning sections of the plant is given in Figure 1. The wet zinc sulphide concentrates are un-loaded into a pug mixer, by means of a Pay loader, and mixed with water in a mixing tank to make a slurry of 80 per cent solids. The slurry is transferred to a .feed tank and then introduced into the roaster at a point four feet above the constriction plate, which is the height of the settled bed of zinc calcines. "PT ANTAM UBPE Pongkor underground mine use blasting to develop its tunnels which will cause poisonous and dangerous gases trapped inside mine. To analyze this case, a study of mine ventilation, the dispersion of carbon monoxide (CO) gas concentration and diffusion coefficient is commenced. At the end, the re-entry time formula will be determined. Results indicate that this study is site specific and could only be applied in the place this study executed. The aim of this study is to be further developed by applying Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to find a universal re-entry formula. Thus, its development and production processes require blasting to develop its tunnel. This process caused poisonous and dangerous gases spread and trapped inside the mine, one of them is carbon monoxide (CO) gas. CO is formed in an unbalanced reaction of explosives detonation and could be the cause of headache, blackout and death to people who inhale CO at certain concentration (McPherson, 2011; Hartman, Mutmansky, Ramani, & Wang, 2012). Mine ventilation system is installed in the mine to resolve this problem. Mine ventilation play an important role to disperse CO gas by absorb the poisonous/dangerous gases and deliver clean air into mine. The important parameter is diffusion coefficient, because diffusion is affecting particulates or gasses spreading from its sources throughout the mine. Diffusion coefficient is the total diffusion in axial direction of turbulent flow mainly by convection of bulk motion, advection and eddy diffusion, while the effect of molecular diffusion is appreciably negligible (Widiatmojo et al, 2015). Taylor (1953, 1954) develops a theory about the dispersion by inducing a slow stream of solvent into a capillary tube. Taylor used Reynolds assumption of radial diffusivity to be analogous with the transfer of the matter in turbulent flow as well as the transfer of momentum and heat. "This paper covers the new six-strand curved-mould billet casting machine at the Contrecoeur Works of SidbecDosco. It commenced production of 3 Yz-in. square billets at the beginning of January 1972. Together with two 100- ton ultra-high-power electric furnaces in a new meltshop, it is the principal source of billets for the existing rod and bar mill also located at Contrecoeur. The paper develops the reasoning for casting-to-size 3Y2 -in. billets and for choosing a six-strand machine. It indicates the significance of Sidbec-Dosco Montreal Works' extensive experience in operating a four-strand curvedmould billet machine since 1965 and the ways in which this experience influenced the design and operation of the new caster. Machine features are described in detail, as are the reasons for some of the features. The installation, checkout and crew training are briefly discussed as well as the tundish teeming trials. The first cast on January 5, 1972, is covered and a log is shown of the first casts to an empty ladle. There are operating statistics covering the first 100 casts, which produced 8000 tons of good billets in ten weeks of operation. Machine performance and billet quality were good and the few minor problems encountered are described."

Caland Ore Company Limited, a subsidiary of Inland Steel Company of Chicago, Illinois, leased an iron ore deposit from Steep Rock Iron Mines Limited on January 1, 1953.. This deposit lay underneath a lake and was covered with 161,000,000 cubic yards of Jake bottom material, mainly silt. Removal of this material was done on a contract dredging basis. This contract was divided into a plant phase and an operating phase. The plant phase consisted of supplying two cutter-type suction dredges, each with two booster pumps in the discharge lines. All six pumps were centrifugal, had 36" discharges and were powered by 10,000 horsepower electric motors. Peak demand was 59,157 kilowatts. One hundred and forty miles of steel tower line were built to bring power to the site. The balance of the plant consisted of tugs, 12 miles of discharge line, varying from 36" diameter to 42" diameter and attendant land-based equipment. A number of interesting dams were constructed

OZ Minerals owns and operates the Prominent Hill copper-gold concentrator in South Australia, built in 2008 and commissioned in early 2009. The concentrator operates via semi autogenous grinding in a thirty four foot ThyssenKrupp Polysius mill followed by a twenty four foot Polysius ball mill in closed circuit with hydro cyclones, designed for an ore throughput of eight million tonnes per annum. The main aspects of designing the circuit are discussed along with the issues faced in the early stages of operation. A review of the optimization strategy applied to the milling circuit such as cyclone optimization, advanced process control strategy implementation and reline management to improve availability is then discussed highlighting areas of significant process improvement that have seen the plant exceed nameplate throughputs above nine million tonnes per annum.

Sulfate balance control is a common problem for zinc plants. Roast-leach-electrowin plants are mostly concerned with the over-generation of sulfates while for the HudBay direct leach plant both extremes are possible including potential necessity to buy sulfuric acid to replenish a sulfate-depleted circuit, which makes the problem doubly important. Quantitative methods were applied at the HudBay plant to analyze sulfate generation/depletion based on a local sulfur balance and sulfate extraction calculation in the leach circuit, using a Pb-tie method. Main factors were established influencing sulfate generation/depletion, including the critical role of Pb and pyrite. Regression analysis proved to be effective and allowed the quantitative prediction of Pb concentrations necessary to reach the equilibrium for the sulfate balance. This in turn provided a firm basis for a sulfate-control strategy realized through concentrate blend correction, which allowed the plant to fine-tune sulfate generation/depletion effectively reducing economic consequences of excessive/deficient sulfate generation.

Cyanide has been used for the recovery of gold since the mid 1800s, but several jurisdictions have already banned its use, and environmental pressures are increasing to finding an alternative. Gold also forms chloride complexes similar to those of cyanide, but the use of chloride has never achieved widespread acceptance. This paper describes a chloride-based flowsheet, wherein the key unit process is the recovery and recycle of chloride ion. It is shown that the chloride-based flowsheet is competitive economically with the conventional cyanide-based flowsheets, and that it has a number of other advantages, particularly environmentally.

During this, the Centennial year of the discovery of the Hall-Heroult process, it seems appropriate to review some of the developments which have taken place in Canada and to explain why it has become an important world centre for the production of primary aluminum. For many years after it was recognized that the element aluminum existed, scientists were frustrated in their efforts to isolate it. In the early 1800s H. C. Oersted and Frederick Woehler prepared small quantities sufficient to measure some of the physical properties. A quasi-commercial process involving reduction with metallic sodium was developed by the French scientist H. St. Claire Deville in 1855 but the cost was very high ($30. 00 per kg). It was not until 1886 that Charles Martin Hall in the United States and P.L.T. Heroult in France, more or less simultaneously but completely independently, discovered the process which is essentially that in use today. Some of the early pioneers in the industry quickly recognized the potential of the hydro-electric resources in Canada as economic energy suppliers for aluminum production. The first commercial production in Canada was in Shawinigan, Quebec in 1901, only 15 years after the process was discovered. Subsequently operating plants were established at nine different locations in Canada (Quebec and British Columbia) (Table 1). Operations continue today in all locations except one (La Tuque). The table shows present plant capacity which for the older plants was reached in an evolutionary manner including replacement of obsolete capacity or upgrading and modernization of existing designs.

"IntroductionDURING the past five years, over two miles of shaft sinking have been completed at Falconbridge. As sinking has continued, we have improved our equipment and technique with a resulting increase in efficiency. Throughout this period, all sinking has been done by contracting firms, under our direction and to our equipment specifications, with highly satisfactory results. Since 1949, Riddell shaft mucking machines have been successfully used in conjunction with the •benching method of sinking. Our most recent practice can best be illustrated by describing the method used in sinking No. 1 shaft at the Fecunis Lake mine.No. 1 Shaft, Fecunis Lake MineNo. 1 shaft, consisting of six compartments and measuring 13 ft. 11 l/2 in. by 19 ft. 9 3/8 in., outside timber (Figure 1), will be sunk to a depth of 4,170 feet. "This paper describes the performance properties of a new 95 ksi minimum yield strength, oil well casing grade designed specifically to resist hydrogen sulphide stress corrosion cracking, SSCc. The new grade, Soo-95SS, demonstrates NACE Tensile threshold values greater than 90% specified minimum yield strength, SMYS, and NACE Bent Beam values in excess of 12.7 x 1()4 psi. The new Soo-9588 grade also exhibits superior collapse and notch toughness values. IntroductionIn recent years, a trend toward casing grade specialization has resulted in the introduction of numerous proprietary grades designed specifically for particular production environments, In response, Algoma Steel has developed, as part of a "" grade for service"" philosophy, two new 95 ksi minimum yield grades. The two grades are Soo-95, High Collapse (HC), and Sour Service (SS). This paper describes the development of Soo-95 Sour Service.Four main objectives were established:1. Definition of the steelmaking and continuous cast processing practices2. Determination of the acceptable maximum and minimum levels for all chemical elements3. Definition of special processing requirements4. Definition of the physical characteristics and ranges of the product properties.This paper provides a description of the experimental approach, followed by a presentation and discussion of the trial results . Finally, a number of conclusions are given."

Introduction In presenting this paper the author wishes to state that the opinions here given represent only his personal views. A general survey of the subject has been attempted, but such deductions as may have been drawn are not necessarily endorsed by the Company with which he is associated. The aeroplane as an instrument of transport is yet a novelty, for it is only twenty-five years since man first flew. This statement, by itself, may be very deceptive, for compared with the steam locomotive or even the auto-mobile, this infant in industry has made some remarkable showings. The 'actual performance' speed-curve of aircraft plotted over a ten-year period is rising faster than the 'expectancy' speed-curve of 1924 indicated, and it should be noted that, today, the possibilities of 600 miles per hour provoke less scepticism than did the prophecies of 400 miles per hour only a decade ago. Commencing with the remarkable achievement of raising one man into the air, aircraft with an all-up weight of 14 tons are now in daily use on the British airways, and recently a non-stop flight of 5,340 miles was accomplished in an aeroplane, without refuelling. More true than ever is the statement that the records of yesterday are commonplace tomorrow, for new ideas are today seized on and exploited to the utmost once the period of scepticism and doubt has been overcome. In fact, so many new ideas have been brought forward, during the past few years, and applied successfully in our economic life, that one may well ask if today we are not a little too impatient, too exacting in demands, forgetting that real worth-while progress -is attained by no short-cuts.

"Over the years, ore geologists have made innumerable observations as to the relationships of certain kinds of ore deposits to particular types of rocks and to the types of primary and secondary structures that these rocks contain. On the basis of these, the places in which to look for new are deposits are more clearly defined than they would be in an exploration program based largely or solely on concepts of ore genesis. This paper discusses the affinity of certain rock types and structures for such ore deposits as: (1) tin-tungsten associated with granitoid rocks; (2) lead-zinc of simple mineralogy in carbonate rocks; (3) massive base-metal sulphides in sedimentary or volcanic rocks; (4) massive base-metal sulphides and oxides at, or near, contacts with igneous rocks; (5) gold or gold-uranium in, or adjacent to, conglomerates; (6) shale- or sandstone-hosted copper; and (7) porphyry coppers. Additional varieties could be considered, but it appears that these examples are sufficient to demonstrate the validity of the suggestion that the use of observational characteristics is far more useful in mineral exploration than that of theories of ore genesis.As by-products of the theory of plate tectonics, many concepts have been put forward to explain how ore deposits of different kinds have been formed. Most, if not all, of these theories seem to be as valid as present-day information permits. However, do these ideas add to the ability of the ore geologist to find ore deposits? I doubt it, and offer reasons as to why I think so.To produce maximum results in any exploration program, the one that makes the greatest use of information produced about the geologic environment of the area being investigated is the one that will provide the greatest return in deposits found for the sponsors of the program. Such exploration is best designated as total exploration, and it certainly is the most effective way of uncovering such new deposits as may exist in the area being studied in particular and of adding to the sum total of nonfuel minerals deposits available to the industrial world in general."

Denison Mines Limited has been processing uranium ore in the Elliot Lake area for the past 20 years. As the original concept of uranium processing has been modified somewhat over this period, the present paper will describe the current recovery practices at the Denison mill from crushing through concentrate drying and packing . Special emphasis will be placed on the leaching, ion exchange and precipitation sections of the process, with consideration being given to the entire circuit. Descriptions will be given of equipment now being used and control strategies will be discussed.
