"American Barrick Resources Corporation acquired the goldstrike property in north eastern Nevada in early 1987. Since that time, the company has undertaken an extensive development program. This paper will overview the milling, autoclaving, and heap leaching facilities which are part of the $400-million Betze development plan. Gold production at the Mine has increased from 40,000 ounces per annum in 1987 to more than 500,000 ounces in 1991. And in 1992 Goldstrike will be the single largest North American gold mine when it produces 1,000,000 ounces.1. Additionally, the Purple Vein deposit, one mile north of the Mine, is expected to add at least 4 million ounces of reserves by year end 1991.The Goldstrike ore body contains both oxide and sulphide ore. The largest part of the reserves are contained in the high grade, deep sulphide ore. "To investigate the evolution of fluid-driven fracture of rock-like material subjected to borehole fluid pressure and its consequential damage with regard to post-peak stabilization, micro-seismic activities have been monitored using nondestructive technique of acoustic emission (AE) corresponding to the macro-scale complete history of loading curve by setting the hollow cylindrical external circumferential strain to be a closed-loop feedback signal during servo-fluid-driven tests. Development of a novel fluidinduced loading system injected from internal borehole as well as monitoring system were equipped such that the initiation and propagation of micro-cracks enable to analyze experimentally. By programming/controlling either injection rate or fluid pressure, synthetic sandstones with low-permeability made by cement mortar were conducted in this study. It found that both the growth of macro-crack initialized intensively as reaching the breakdown pressure and the micro-seismic activities represented by AE locations show nice agreement. The experimental results in this paper provide better understandings of fluid-driven fracture mechanism.INTRODUCTIONFluid-driven fracture is a process of generating cracks by injecting viscous fluid into solid material. Conventionally, fluid-driven fracture tests have been performed by mining industry to measure the in situ stress (Haimson & Fairhurst, 1969) and fluid-driven fracture has been employed by the petroleum industry to recover oil and gas. Additionally, the mechanism of crack growth or the extension of existing cracks is important to the evolution of volcanic dikes over distances of a few kilometers (Lister & Kerr, 1991; Rubin, 1995), crack propagation in dams (Bolzon & Cocchetti, 2003) and the disposal of radioactive waste (Sun, 1969)."

In response to requests from its stakeholders, the International Standards Organisation is engaged in development of an international standard for Energy Management Systems (EnMS) which will become "ISO 50001". This new standard will build on the successes of both the EN16001 EnMS standard that has been used by dozens of European companies, as well as the ANSI/MSE 2000:2008 EnMS standard that is currently being used in several pilot projects in the USA and Ontario. This paper provides an overview of the key points of the EnMS standards, and describes how they can be used to drive sustainable energy reductions in the metallurgy industry.

"Stereolithography is a well-known rapid prototyping technique in the manufacturing sector. Essentially, it is a three-dimensional printing process that produces plastic prototype parts from standard CAD files. At present, Canadian mining companies are not fully aware of the potential of rapid prototyping techniques (RPTs) for their production and mine design systems. Mining engineers and geologists attempt to visualize and understand the characteristics and layouts of orebodies on computer models, and in cases where it is decided to develop physical models, the process is time-consuming, based on simplified constructions. RPTs, such as stereolithography, can facilitate engineers and geologists to quickly, and with satisfactory accuracy, visualize sections of orebodies and evaluate alternative ore extraction techniques using 3D solid models.The research discussed in this paper is carried out by the Laurentian University Mining Automation Laboratory (LUMAL) in collaboration with Inco Limited and the Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Institute (IMTI) of the National Research Council of Canada. The main objective with this research is to evaluate the applicability of state-of-the-art RPTs to underground hard rock mining systems. RPTs can play a significant role in accelerating the design and development process of mining systems."

"Mg alloy has a high specific strength, however, their thickness reduction was limited on most parts because of their poor stiffness. Since the modulus of rigidity is an intrinsic property, improvement of modulus of rigidity to the enhancement of stiffness is impossible. Therefore, the modification of shape and structure is available method to enhance the stiffness of real part fabricated by Mg alloy sheet. There are many thin walled parts which are located in outer section of electromagnetic system.Poor stiffness is often shown on wide surface area part with steel sheet, which has also high modulus of rigidity. In these cases, various groove patterns are used to increase the stiffness of part. However, some different methods have to be used when general groove pattern can’t be used. So, we would like to propose some new method to high stiffness on thin walled precision forging of Al or Mg alloys.An effect of proposed method on stiffness enhancement can be confirmed by fabrication of prototypes as well as structure and forming analysis based on FEM."

"IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to give a •brief history of iron and steel in British Columbia, a quick look at the present operations of Western Canada Steel, Limited, a review of iron ore resources and iron and steel markets, and a projection of what the future might hold for the industry in British Columbia.From the Past to the PresentWhile the paper is entitled Past, Present, and Future, in covering the past, which we shall call the time prior to 1947, there is very little to be said. Small shipments of iron ore were made from the Texada deposits by the Puget Sound Iron Company from 1886 to 1907. Total ore shipped did not exceed 70,000 tons. Part of this is believed to have been used in building a United States battleship in 1907 in the Bremerton Naval Yards in Seattle, Washington.In 1914 a small steel mill was started on Lulu island, rolling bars from •box piles and used shafting. This mill operated spasmodically for a few years but finally burned down in 1921. The rolling mill stands were sold to China and are no doubt in operation in China today.In 1916 the City of Port Moody assisted in the financing of a mill which operated on re-roll rails, box piles, and steel ingots made in an experimental electric furnace in Port Moody. This furnace also produced small quantities of pig iron scrap. The backers of the Port Moody mill showed a great deal of enterprise and must have been a very forward looking group, since this was one of the first recorded applications of the electric furnace to small ingot production. Despite their enterprise, the operation was unsuccessful and terminated in 1921."

Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) is a method of extracting appliance-level power consumption information from aggregate circuit-level data with the goal of giving users feedback regarding their energy consumption so they can take control of their consumption habits. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm for classification of on and off states of appliances. We compare the performance of our algorithm in on state detection with a pervious paper that evaluated the same dataset and show that it performs up to 13% better. We also present the results of a case study where we collected data for different modes of a cooktop, microwave and dishwasher and used our algorithms to perform power estimation. The error on ten different setups in the test bed ranges from 1% to 32%. We discuss our results and lay out ideas for future work.

Mining professionals are focusing on the development of safe and achievable mine plans to maximize mining value while reducing the potential of project delays and production shortfalls. This paper explores how new design tools, techniques and system designs in mine planning are being developed to optimize the value of every ton of ore mined and processed. To differentiate from other papers on long-term planning, this paper focuses on the concept of business planning at the mines. Business planning is the understanding and optimization of the relationship between mine plans and the value it adds in the overall process. The management and key stakeholders of Vale Inco have recognized that the development of a robust mine planning system and programs are essential for the long-term sustainability of the operations.

It is just over 100 years since the practice of blowing small bubbles into a mixture of ground ore and water revolutionized the mining industry, resulting in uneconomic deposits becoming highlyprofitable mines, along with the inevitable lawsuits over this new technology called froth flotation. To this day, the viability of many mining projects rests largely with the ability of flotation to effectively capture the valuable minerals and reject wastes. Remarkably, bubble behaviour in flotation has not been well understood until very recently with the advent of new sensor technologies that can be brought directly into the operating plants. This presentation will review the importance to the mining industry of understanding bubbles, highlight these new technologies and illustrate, with examples, how paying attention to your bubbles will pay off.

"This paper had its origin in a panel discussion organized by the Canadian Uranium Producers Metallurgical Committee (CUPMC) at their Annual Meeting in Blind River in May, 1964. The reason for the panel was the formation of the National Uranium Tailings Research Program funded in the amount of ten million dollars by the Federal government. According to the bureaucrats in charge the program would seek to solve the perceived problems as well as any actual problems they believed existed with uranium tailings. Dr. Allan Ashbrook of Eldorado Nuclear chaired this panel and his summation of the panel's purpose was set out as ""Regulation and the Regulatory Process in the Nuclear Industry, Where Have We Been, Where Are We Now and Where Are We Going""?"" This paper will try to relate these questions to the whole mineral industry.The Canadian Mining Association has been telling us our natural resources are today required only if they are competitively priced with those produced in so called ""third world"" countries where labour rates are lower, environmental restrictions may be less and every effort is made by the local government to sell their product. It is in this hostile economic climate that the Canadian mining industry now finds itself. Before going further I want to stress these comments apply only to: a) Mines financed by private capital in a free enterprise society.b) Mining companies want to operate in an environmentally safe manner. However, they must earn a profit because no company financed with private capital can borrow money ad infinitum.WHERE HAVE WE BEENNone of us today would want to return to the days when the mill waste management system consisted of pumping the tailing to the nearest slope and letting nature's law of gravity do the rest. This was the way it was in early gold mines in Nova Scotia, tin mines in Cornwall, England or silver mines in Cobalt, Ontario and survives today in countries where climate, customs and methods of doing business are far different from Canada. As mill tonnage rates increased, more sophisticated systems evolved often designed for mining areas with different climates. Systems imported from arid climates such as south-west United States retained the solids but allowed bacterial oxidation of the sulphides promoting acid drainage. Environmental regulations were introduced and Canadian mines learned to handle tailings in our climates."

Introduction and Early History The British Canadian Mine is one of four operating properties of Asbestos Corporation, Limited, and is located in the town of Black Lake, Que., five miles southwest of Thetford Mines. In the early days of as1bestos mining, this .property was owned by a few small companies who later became part of the Asbestos Corporation. First .to commence mining operations on the property was the Coleraine Mining Company who, in 1885, began selling part of their large holdings in the area to various asbestos mining interests. Of these, the earliest active companies were Manhattan United Asbestos, the Glasgow and Montreal Asbestos Company, and the Anglo-Canadian, the last named later becoming the Standard and Dominion Asbestos Companies. Extraction of fibre was limited to what is now known as crude asbestos and the methods were primitive. Drilling was done .by hand and the ore was lifted by derricks operated by band winches. These were later replaced by horse power, but it was not until 1887 that the first steam-operated boom derricks were introduced, at the Anglo-Canadian mine. The ore was hand cobbled and the asbestos roughly classified and bagged. The waste rock, which by today's standards contained a considerable percentage of marketable fibre, was dumped near the pit. The first attempt to separate the asbestos from the host rock by mechanical means was made in 1888 by the G1asgow and Montreal Asbestos Company, then known as the Scottish-Canadian Asbestos Company, whose mill, erected in that year, was the world's first asbestos mill. Though the equipment was crude, the principles employed were the same as those used today with much larger units. The next steps were the use of rock drills, the adoption of steam rail transportation for moving mill rock, and conversion to the more flexible cable-derrick hoisting.

The question of geophysical prospecting is one that is beginning to occupy a pre-eminent place in the minds of those actively concerned in the discovery and exploitation of ore deposits. This is in marked contrast to the reception accorded such ideas when the Junior author, six and a half years ago, began introducing electrical prospectii1g to the mining fraternity on this continent. Happily, the mention of geophysics no longer evokes the sceptical and pitying smiles that it did in those days. A little reflection will show that modern geophysical methods are merely a logical development from pre-existing technique. In the study of geological problems, is it not logical to use all possible physical properties of matter? The study of crystal form and cleavage, the examination of thin sections of minerals by means of polarized light or ordinary light, in fact, utilize physical properties of minerals for the benefit of the geologist. These are, of course, laboratory methods, and the extension of the study of similar properties into field work was inevitable. This began with the magnetometric surveys, used as early as 1760 in New Jersey to locate iron ores. Eighty-four years later, John Locke's work in the United States resulted in pointing out relationships between the terrestrial magnetic field and main tectonic features of the earth's crust.

This paper describes the geophysical Jogging of coal that is being carried out for the National Coal Board in the United Kingdom. An explanation of the technique is given and results are presented showing estimations of seam thickness to within ±0.5 in. and ash content to accuracies of ±2.5 per cent. The basic method of interpretation is outlined and some conclusions regarding the conditions of roof and floor material which may be deduced from the logs are explained. An indication of future developments in this field, including the identification of coal type and moisture content, is given.

"There is a very small fraction of wireless experts in the world with experience in underground installations and an even smaller fraction that have experience specific to building mine shafts. This is why in 2009, Redpath created its own system to meet the demands specific to shaft construction. Today, after a dozen shaft installations and several design iterations, Redpath has the expertise and experience required to implement a proper wireless system in any shaft configuration.This document will explain multiple proven wireless communication designs optimized for shaft construction and suitable for permanent use. This includes line of sight installations up to 1200m, short range mesh networks, and the latest patent pending Integrated Leaky Feeder Mesh Network. Additionally, this document will explore the lessons that Redpath learned in its effort to interconnect the people and tools needed to build a mine shaft.INTRODUCTIONAfter a decade of research, several design iterations and a dozen application examples, Redpath has resolved two wireless network architectures to best serve mine shaft construction projects.The long range line-of-sight (LOS) wireless network is the most cost effective and easiest to install, but requires an unobstructed line of sight between the working area and the shaft collar. As such, long range LOS is best suited for ventilation shafts or during the first phase of shaft sinking, before the shaft is equipped.Alternatively, a mesh network uses radios installed at pre-determined intervals in the shaft and on each conveyance. A wireless mesh uses antennas to bridge intervals between shaft radios, whereas Redpath’s integrated leaky feeder mesh network (patent pending) bridges these intervals with radiating cable, commonly referred to as a “leaky feeder” cable. Both of these mesh configurations can provide continuous reception for hoist conveyances travelling in shafts without line-of-sight, making them ideal for shaft equipping and even permanent installations in both mine shafts and lateral drifts.BACKGROUNDHoist operators receive operating commands using what are commonly referred to as “bell signals.” These instructions are delivered in a series of coded pulses on a spring returned pull cord or push button that is typically hardwired back to the hoist operator’s control room from one of many locations in the mine shaft. During the construction phase of a traditional mine shaft, a worker riding inside the sinking bucket would have to reach out to a pull cord installed on the shaft wall to send a stop command to the hoist operator. Today, Redpath’s modern shaft sinking projects use fully enclosed personnel carriers to protect the workers riding inside, specifically preventing workers from reaching out into the shaft while the hoist is in motion. The enforcement of this safety feature on all shaft projects in 2008 forced the engineering group at Redpath to find a suitable wireless solution for hoist communication to facilitate shaft construction.THE IDEAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM FOR MINE SHAFT CONSTRUCTIONIdeally, the shaft communication system should not transform the tools to which the miners have grown accustomed. It should support the push-to-talk functionality of traditional VHF handsets and the standard belling system that has been used for decades. Additionally, it should be able to support a vendor independent framework upon which new devices and features can be added. The following paragraphs summarize some of the important requirements Redpath has identified.Support for voice transmission: Low latency is critical to prevent jitter during voice transmissions. WITH the friendly consent both of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, for whom this paper was written, and of the author, we had the pleasure of publishing Mr. Oliver Hall's paper on Mining at Noranda in our issue of last March and of having Mr. Hall present it at the Montreal Meeting. In the following pages we now report the discussion elicited by the paper at a meeting of the Institution in London on March 18th. The report is taken from the April, 1937, issue of the Bulletin of the Institution, to whom we again tender our thanks. THE PRESIDENT (MR. ROBERT ANNAN) said that this paper was, by arrangement with the Institution and the author, also being published by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for approximately simultaneous discussion. He was sorry that Mr. Oliver Hall could not be present to introduce it in person, for he was sure that the author would have had many more details to give about this most interesting mine. The paper contained a very useful account of mining operations, and personally he had been pleased to see the tri-dimensional projections of the orebody in Figs. 3 and S. It was a good illustration o the value of that method in presenting the form of an orebody such as this. While he had no desire to go into technical details, he wished to call attention to a remark in Mr. Hall's introduction, in dealing with the history of the mine and the principles on which it was run. The author had given an account of the early difficulties in solving geological problems, and later of the economic difficulties of seeing this mine through a period of intense depression in metal prices. He stated that it was clear that, to maintain income, tonnage must be increased, and, to maintain profits, costs must be decreased. It would be observed that there was no question of increasing the grade of ore. Then the author went on to say: 'Having set the house in order in the years of adversity, the higher price for gold is being used to mine to still lower limits and lengthen the life of the enterprise and the welfare of those dependent on it'.

"At Teck-Corona Operating Corporation's David Bell Mine, a water quality management strategy is employed to produce both a chemically and biologically clean effluent prior to discharge to the environment.The strategy includes operating methods to minimize contaminants leaving the concentrator and an effluent treatment plant for cyanide, antimony, and heavy metal removal of concentrator, mine and site waste streams.Concentrator practices, the effluent treatment plant, process chemistry and the present day performance of the water quality management strategy are reviewed.INTRODUCTIONThe David Bell Mine is located in the Hernia gold camp 35 km east of Marathon, Ontario. The concentrator has a design throughput of 1,000 tonnes per day. ROM ore (-6"") is ground in a semi-autogenous mill followed by a ball mill, thickener, leaching, and carbon-in-pulp gold recovery unit operations. The concentrator flow sheet is shown in Figure 1."

THE geology of the Copper Mountain mine has been ably described by Dr. Victor Dolmage in Memoir 171 of the Geological Survey. Reference is invited to that paper for a more extended description of the geology of the ore deposits than will be given here. The important orebodies of the mine occur in fragmencal volcanic rocks, parallel with and adjacent to the gabbro of the Copper Mountain stock. In the mine area, the contact strikes N.45°W. and dips either vertical or steeply co the southwest. For a distance of 500 feet or more from the contact, the fragmental rocks have been intensely metamorphosed both dynamically and hydrothermally. The dynamic effects are reflected in the foliation and fracturing parallel with the contact, which occurs throughout the mine, and the volcanic rocks within this foliated zone are, in places, highly schistose. Superimposed upon thi.s structure is a system of fine, straight, parallel frac-tures that strike nearly normal to the foliation (and contact) and dip between 65° and 75° to the north; it is with this last-described fracture system that the ore minerals are structurally associated. The fractures are mineralized with bornite and, to a considerably less extent, with chalcopyrite and some pyrite. A notable characteristic is the extreme fineness of the fractures; even in high-grade ore they are rarely larger than pencil lines. The tenor of the ore, therefore, varies directly with the fracture spacing. Replacemcnr of the host-rock between two or more fractures, varying in degree from finely disseminated sulphides to masses of nearly solid bornite up to 18 inches wide and 2 to 3 feet long, is not uncommon in the higher-grade portions of the orebodies. Two structural types of orebody are recognized in local nomenclature: the 'contact' orebodies, so-called because they occur along the contact; and 'outlying' orebodics, which are enclosed in the volcanics. The former arc tabular or lenticular bodies elongated along the strike and dip of the contact. The 'outlying' orebodies are coniform, chimney-like masses roughly elliptical in plan; with depth, their roots plunge at steep angles toward the contact. All of the orebodies are cut by a number of light-coloured granophyre and felsite porphyry dykes. These dykes-the so-called 'mine' dykes -enter the mine area from the north, curve gently southeasterly across the orebodies, and then cross the contact into the gabbro at the south end of the mine. All the dykes dip vertical to steeply east.

"The Alberta and Northwest Chamber of Mines was founded in Edmonton, Alberta in 1935. The organization represented private sector mining explorers and developers in the province and north west Canada. The Chamber aided and abetted the establishment of the two territorial mining associations. Because of corporate human resource department creation by north of sixty mine operators, the Chamber refocused on Alberta and broadened its perspective to include activities beyond mining. In 1977 the name changed to the Alberta Chamber of resources. The slogan (in more modern terms vision, mandate, goal, etc) remains as Orderly Development of Canada's Resources.The sixty-three year reputation of the Chamber, built on volunteer rather than staff contribution, is the principal reason for any success. The key has truly been the reputation, not an image, as all activities have been solution oriented.This presentation provides insight into the structure and methodology applied by the organization, and reviews some of the successes and failures during the period 1985 to present.
