The grain structure prediction of metallic alloys during a welding process is often an issue. In addition to the welding parameters and the alloy nominal composition and properties, the base metal grain structure and chemical homogeneity also play an important role in the formation of the final microstructure. In this paper intensive characterisation of solidification structure in gas tungsten arc welding of Ni base alloy 600 are described. It is shown that in transverse section of the weld, while the grain structure shows some texture following constrained solidification growth, grain density in the weld is similar or greater than grain density in the heat affected zone. This suggests that simulation of the welding structure needs, in order to be predictive, to take into account : epitaxial growth, secondary nucleation events and 3D growth inside the weld pool.

Introduction Drinnan is situated in the Prairie Creek coal area in the Foothills belt of Alberta. It lies on the main line of the Canadian National railway from Edmonton to Jasper. The exact location is shown on the map (Figure I). Interest in the field was aroused by several circumstances: Its proximity to Brule and Pocahontas on the southwest and to Coal-spur on the southeast led to the belief that coal might be economically produced here. There was already at Hinton a 3 ft. 9 in. coal seam being mined by Seabolt. The coal was of very good grade, being black and shiny in appearance with well defined cleavage and a heat value of 12,000 B. t.u. Outcrops of coal had also been noticed on the north side of the Athabaska river and Fish creek. These facts led the Jasper Coal Company to investigate the field. This Company considered taking over the Seabolt property at Hinton, but, owing to the size of the seam, this plan was abandoned and prospecting by diamond drills and test pits was started two years ago in the district east of Hinton. After prospecting had been completed, the most favourable district was found to be in township 51, ranges 24 and 25, west of the 5th meridian. The Company's lease includes all or parts of sections 18, 19, 20, and 28 in range 24, and sections 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 in range 25. The approximate boundaries of the property are the Canadian National railway on the north, Happy creek on the west, and Cache Percotte creek on the east. The lease comprises 3,100 acres, and the total amount of coal in sight is estimated at 100,000,000 tons.

Introduction When one thinks of a coal stripping deposit, the picture that usually comes to mind is that of a more or less flat seam from two to twenty feet in thickness overlain by ten to fifty feet of overburden, in suitable ratio for economic operation. This is the usual type of stripping deposit and is quite a common occurrence in various parts of the prairie provinces. Rather unusual types of coal stripping deposits are being presently worked as open-cut mines by Sterling Collieries, Limited, and the Co al Valley Mining Company, Limited, at Miles 47 and 48 on the Alberta Coal Branch, some 150 miles south west of Edmonton. These deposits are of interest chiefly because they represent turned-up and greatly thickened sections of the Mynheer seam, and as such they present their own problems, peculiar to the commercial exploitation of a seam of this type. The area in which these deposits occur was originally owned by the Pacific Pass Collieries, whose operations, however, were confined to under-ground mining at Lovett, some eight miles to the southeast. It was not until l918 that the value of these deposits was realized, when the Company now known as Sterling Collieries, Limited, opened their pit at Mile 47. At the inception of the work, coal was loaded directly into the railway cars by men using wheelbarrows. In 1920, a tipple was built, after which the coal was loaded by steam shovel into mine cars, hauled by steam dinkeys, and loaded over the tipple into railway cars. In 1922, the Coal Valley Mining Company entered the field at Mile 48, with an entirely mechanical equipment, and at the present rime these two are the only stripping properties in Alberta using mechanical equipment both for the removal of overburden and the loading of the coal. These Companies have operated continuously since that time, and have to date mined and shipped 4,000,000 tons of coal, and moved some 5,255,000 cubic yards of stripping. The present annual coal output for the two mines is about 240,000 tons.

Zinc production by Cominco Ltd. began in Trail in 1916 at a rate of 55 metric tonnes per day (t/d) and was increased ,in several increments until now electrowinning capacity approaches 750 t/d. The last increment, 40-t/d high-productivity electrowinning plant, was commissioned in 1974. In this paper, the design and operating experience with both the existing electrowinning plant and the new high-productivity plant are described.

HOLLINGER mining operations have required development by 24 vertical shafts having a total length of 28,160 feet. Seventeen of these are sunk from surface and seven are interior shafts. Four surface shafts and three interior shafts are now active and, excepting the recently completed new main ore-hoisting shaft, the remainder are either abandoned, or are used for passes or for ventilation. The new shaft bottoms 60 feet below the 3,050 level, but there is much work to be done before it is placed in service. The term 'shaft practice' is intended to include shaft construction and a general treatment o typical equipment. It is a large subject for an organization the size of Hollinger and this paper is intended only to present the salient features. "The case is presented for the use of simulators for the computer-based training (CBT) of mining plant operators and for introducing them to automatically controlled systems. As well as their use in the classroom, the role of simulators is examined for ""on-plant"" use in trouble-shooting, fault-finding and maintenance of automatic systems. Case studies are presented showing how specific simulators are becoming established or have potential in the areas of automated materials handling, machine testing, setup and guidance. The evolution of scientific simulations into simulators of widespread practical use is discussed and present-day limitations of computer speed and graphics are considered. Related areas of research for the Canadian Centre for Automation and Robotics in Mining (CCARM) are identified.IntroductionCCARM's Commitment to Simulator DevelopmentAs automation is progressively developed and exploited in mining operations, there arises an urgent need to educate and train staff responsible for its introduction and operation in our mines and for its maintenance. For this purpose , an essential ingredient of an automation program is the development of appropriate mining system simulators for use by a wide variety of personnel. The author has been fortunate to have been closely involved with the development of automatic control systems for a variety of mining machines and mining systems in the United Kingdom. A key ingredient of the research phase in each case has been the use of simulation techniques. As projects have moved toward their commissioning and exploitation phase, the simulations have evolved into simulators tailored for use by machine operators and maintenance personnel. Illustrative case studies are presented later. The researach of the newly constituted Canadian Centre for Automation and Robotics in Mining (CCARM) will likewise involve extensive simulation, and the development of simulators (from the scientific programs) for use at the mine by operators and technicians will be given high priority in the Centre's over-all work program."

Field work inaugurated in 1962 in the townships of Lemieux and Lesseps, in the Gaspe Peninsula of Quebec, has permitted the author to delineate the lithologic units of the area, to elucidate a few stratigraphic problems and to outline several zones of alteration. Certain features of these zones and the numerous mineralized showings in the area merit the attention of prospectors and exploration companies.

Most pressure oxidation operations introduce oxygen through a large multi-use nozzle in the vapour space of the autoclave. Sparge pipes extend inside the vessel to the point of discharge below the compartment agitator. However, two zinc pressure leach operations have successfully used a bottom entry oxygen sparge system for a number of years. Recently, the concept has been used in a whole ore gold pressure oxidation operation as well as a copper pressure leach plant. Both of the latter operations also introduce cooling water for temperature control through the same sparge pipe. This paper addresses the benefits of the bottom entry system with regards to autoclave performance and the positive effects on agitator performance.

"The 2010/11 Canterbury earthquakes triggered many mass movements in the Port Hills including rockfalls, rock and debris avalanches, slides and slumps and associated cliff-top cracking. The most abundant mass movements with the highest risk to people and buildings were rockfalls and rock/debris avalanches. Over 100 residential homes were impacted by landslides, leading to the evacuation of several hundred residents.Volumes of rock leaving several of the larger cliffs during the earthquake sequence were determined from terrestrial laser scan change models. There were no seismically instrumented cliff sites and there was some distance between the cliffs and nearest strong-motion sites. Therefore, we synthesised free-field rock-outcrop seismograms by employing a stochastic approach controlled by source models and regional parameters derived using spectral inversion of the extensive strong motion data set. Relationships between volumes leaving cliffs during the earthquakes and site peak ground acceleration (PGA), peak ground velocity (PGV) and Arias intensity were compared for different sites. Multiple linear regression was used to analyse the variables that best predict the volumes of debris that fell from the slopes during the main earthquakes. The best correlation between the volume of debris falling per square metre of slope face and the seismic forcing parameters was for vertical PGV. The results from the multiple linear regression incorporating slope height, inclination, PGV horizontal and PGV vertical, improved the statistical relationship.Field data and results from the 2D seismic site response assessment indicate that the following factors affect dynamic performance of the modelled cliffs: 1) cliff geology—mainly material modulus, shear strength and shear wave velocity; 2) slope geometry—ridge-scale versus site-scale effects; and 3) the temporal aspects of the earthquake shaking (i.e., single acceleration peaks of large amplitude versus multiple peaks of smaller amplitude). Model results show that amplification of shaking does not increase linearly with increasing height, but instead reflects changes in the cliff geology where material strength, modulus and shear-wave velocity contrasts lead to acceleration contrasts.These factors show that the use of well documented case histories provide the basis for more certainty in seismic landslide assessments compared to those that are only empirically based."

Sodium cyanide continues to be the lixiviant of choice for gold dissolution. Many gold ore-bodies contain a significant amount of cyanide-soluble copper which increases the cost of processing due to high cyanide consumption and high cyanide destruction and disposal costs. Several cyanide destruction processes are in use today, however, there are just a few cyanide recovery plants operating. A solvent extraction process to recover cyanide has been developed which utilizes the organophosphorous extractants Cyanex 923, di-butyl-butyl-phosphonate (DBBP) or tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) in Bateman Pulsed Columns. Copper cyanide species are first converted to hydrogen cyanide (HCN) by acidification, with or without sulfide addition. HCN is extracted by the organic and stripped using a suitable base (eg. NaOH) resulting in a high strength cyanide solution (eg. NaCN) for recycle to the gold recovery process. Continuous pilot plant testwork on HCN extraction using a 40 mm diameter Bateman Pulsed Column demonstrated a cyanide recovery of greater than 99% with final levels of cyanide in solution of less than 10 ppm. These results illustrate the potential of this technology to recycle cyanide and to detoxify final effluent streams.

ABSTRACT Nickel compounds vary significantly in their toxicological properties, so it is critical that continuing studies to accurately quantify worker exposures consider the processing that accompanies refining nickel-containing materials. The Clydach nickel refinery, which has operated for more than 100 years, was the first nickel-producing facility to show a high risk for lung and nasal-sinus cancers among workers employed since it opened in 1902. Process chemistry and equipment have changed dramatically over Clydach’s history. This paper describes the processing evolution at Clydach with a focus on the propensity for aerosol formation and the forms of nickel in airborne dusts.

"After producing some 50 million tonnes of crude steel the two BOF vessels at Dillinger Hüitte steel plant had to be replaced in 2000/01 due to large deformations. The new vessel design was optimised after a number of theoretical evaluations.Refractory investigations were carried out as well as temperature measurements of the shell to provide a basis for selecting a suitable steel grade. This was found in a DH-GTS development - P420M HT - with high strength at elevated temperatures and excellent weldability and made it also possible to build the vessel without any cooling system.After putting the first vessel into operation the metallurgical results showed no remarkable improvement compared to the old vessel, and were therefore not satisfying. With the help of cold model investigations the arrangement of the tuyeres was modified to improve the flow conditions and the interactions between oxygen jet and the heterogeneous plume of the bottom stirring gas. Further optimisations were obtained by a variation of lance tips and a newly developed lime addition model."

"Drilling results from the established levels at AngloRouyn Mines Limited had indicated inadequate tonnages to meet the planning schedule. It was decided to develop the main zone of the orebody below the bottom working level of the mine. The orebody dips north at an average of 50 degrees and plunges to the west at about 10 degrees. Due to the need for rapid development of this area, a decision was made to use trackless equipment.This paper describes the method used and highlights the use of small 5-ton diesel trucks as carriers for the 2-cu.yd LHD machine. The method achieved advances of about 1,000 feet per month, at a dip of 12 degrees over a length of close to 2,000 feet, using as few as 20 men per day."

A general outline is given for the determination of copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, lead, cadmium, bismuth, manganese, uranium, molybdenum, vanadium, sulphate and fluoride by polarographic or amperometric methods in a variety of ores or metallurgical products. The detection of oxygen in gas mixtures by an amperometric method used as a safety device is also discussed. Introduction I N this paper, a general outline will be given of the polarographic and amperometric methods used for the chemical analysis of various ores and metallurgical products in the Chemical Analysis Section of the Extraction Metallurgy Division of the Mines Branch. The methods to be discussed will be confined to those based on the use of normal D.C. polarography and will not include those methods which utilize a cathode-ray, square wave, pulse or A.C. type of polarograph. For the sake of convenience, ? the polarographic methods will be discussed according to the type of supporting electrolyte employed, as the same electrolyte may serve to determine more than one element in more than one type of ore. "In washability, the objective is to establish the set of maximum possible separation performance criteria for a given mineral feed. The method of choice for this has been the conventional sink-float analysis. Time, cost and safety aspects of the sink-float method have prompted the search for a new approach for establishing separation performance criteria, especially as performance levels of separator plants can be maximized if reliable information based on an analysis of washability in conjunction with particle size distribution, elemental constituency becomes readily available. The new method to establish washability and associated performance information utilizes at least two measurement technologies concurrently: single energy x-ray transmission and image processing. For porous or very inhomogeneous materials the results can be refined further by using dual energy x-ray transmission and image processing. The value of the collected data increases considerably if the washability data were additionally available in time to be considered in the control of the process plant. The incorporation of an automated washability monitor gives near real-time data that would impinge positively on the profitability of the plant operation. The method was extensively tested with a range of sample with different densities, varying from 1 g/cm³ (coal) to 5 g/cm³ (iron ore).INTRODUCTIONWashability of minerals like coal and iron ore is expressed by a curve or graph showing the results of a series of float-and-sink tests. Several of these curves are drawn to illustrate different conditions or variables, usually on the same axes, thus presenting the information on one sheet of paper. Washability curves are essential not only for the design but also for the operation of preparation plants.In determining the washability analysis, particle density is the underlying feature of all washability curves. Conventionally, the particles are separated into density fractions by immersing them in fluids of a predetermined density followed by skimming of those particles that stay afloat. The particles remaining afloat thus have a density lower than that of the fluid they were subjected to. The particles that remained at the bottom of the fluid container thus had a higher density higher than that of the fluid. By progressively increasing, for example, the density of the fluid and immersing the remaining particles so as to be able to skim the next density fraction, the particles would be fractionated into density groups. The liquids used range from aqueous solutions to organic liquids to suspensions. Unfortunately the liquids used for this separation process are often toxic and expensive. It stands to reason that a new method of determining washability is sought."

Friction-type hoists have been in operation at Geco Mines Limited since Septtember, 1957. At the end of the year 1963, the skip hoist had handled nearly ~ million tons of ore and waste. In March, 1962, with the deepening of the shaft, the hoisting de11th was increased from 1,450 to 2,450 feet. Operating experience with the hoists, hoist and balance ropes, rope treads and other related equipment is presented. The paper is intended to supplement an earlier one -"Heavy-Duty Friction Hoisting at Geco Mines," by W. M. Harvey (C.I.M. Transactions, Volume LXIII, 1960, pp. 193 -197). General G ECO Mine Limited is located at Manitouwadge, Ontario, approximately 160 miles east of Port Arthur and 190 mile northwest of Sault Ste. Marie. The Company was formed to exploit a copper-zinc-silver orebody, with current ore reserve (1963) of approximately 21 million tons. The production plant was designed to mine and treat 1.25 million tons per annum. The production and service hoists are mounted at-the top of a reinforced concrete tower above the shaft.

"The asbestos mining industry in the Eastern Townships of Quebec has early recognized the undesirable side-effects associated with mineral production, such as air pollution, noise and unsightly waste dumps. In order to efficiently achieve the industry's aim of eliminating or minimizing these objectionable features of mining, all of the asbestos producers in Quebec interchange information, knowledge and design dealing with the environmental control measures through the Environmental Committee of the Quebec Asbestos Mining Association.The paper describes what has been done and what is planned for the future in the various problem areas, such as control of dust emitted during the open-pit drilling operation, control of dryer stack emissions, control of the environment in ore, fibre and tailings handling operations, rehabilitation of the countryside covered by waste dumps, and many others."

Mineralogical studies and concentration tests were conducted on samples from an oolitic iron deposit from the Peace River district in Alberta to determine what concentrate grades and metal recoveries could be obtained. The samples assayed 32 to 37 wt. % Fe, and consisted of goethite, nontronite, ferruginous opal, siderite , quartz, amorphous phosphate and illite . Flotation with fatty acids yielded the best over-all results. A flotation concentrate from a composite sample of the iron horizon assayed, by weight, 43.0% Fe, 12.3% SiO2 , 1.9% CaD, 0.9% MgO, 4.5% Al2O3 and 2.0% P2O5 and lost 17.2% on ignition, for an iron recovery of 48.8% and a silica rejection of 80%. When heated to drive off the water, the concentrate assayed 52 w t. % Fe and 14. 8% w t. % SiO2

"This is a report on the combined application of ""long-chain"" flocculants and classifier cyclones in the field of slimes treatment, with emphasis on the simultaneous thickening and clarifying of industrial effluents, at low cost. The principle of the process described below involves: (1) the formation of small floes of relatively great strength, by sequential dispersion and conditioning, with average floe size of about 1501 microns; (2) the floes being of sufficient strength to withstand the shearing forces operating within a cyclone and consequently behaving as solid particles with an equivalent diameter (Stokes) that exceeds the size cutpoint of the classifier cyclone; (3) the removal of flocculated solids by means of a classifier cyclone the size cutpoint of which permits effective separation of these solids from the water. Results of test work to date indicate that a broader use of cyclones in industry is possible with the above types of flocculants because the submicron particles and colloidal material are readily collected and clear water is produced, with the attendant advantages of compact construction and low cost that are characteristic of centrifugal separation. The process generally permits classifier cyclones of medium throughput capacity (e.g. 12-in. diam.) to be used for clarifying effluents that contain minus 10-micron particles."

This paper tells the story of a serious mine fire on a mechanized longwall face in a submarine coal mine at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. The story gives, in chronological order, a technical account of the steps taken to investigate, fight and contain the fire. The time during which the events took place spans from June 19 to November 7, 1975.
