A comparison is made between elementary block estimation techniques and the optimal methods of geostatistics using data from an Australian deposit. Considerable improvement in the estimates are obtained by using the optimal technique in this case.

The term slag has been used to define a wide variety of material including mine spoil and slag produced at steel plants. The present paper is concerned only with the non-metallic alumino-silicates developed simultaneously with iron in blast furnaces.The control of iron quality by slag has long been appreciated but here aspects of slag control based on concurrent iron production are indicated. Consideration is given to the basic composition of slags relative to the type of allotrope required. Up to a point, the plant conditions, under which a particular slag type is processed, have some effect, but these conditions only widen the range of a given allotrope.They do not convert one slag type into another. The nature of the slag types and experiments with additives to convert one slag type into another are discussed.The various uses for allotropes of blast furnace slag are considered.Their use in air cooled slag, foamed slag, slag wool, cements, soil stabilization, glass bottles, and building bricks and blocks, is explored in some detail.INTRODUCTIONWithin recent memory, blast furnace practice has been solely concerned with the production of iron. The slag make at this time had not reached embarrassing proportions. In Britain, unlike Germany, no legislation existed to prevent the growth of unsightly slag banks. Generally slag found limited use as fill and road material in the immediate plant vicinity. This is broadly the case in Australia today. In Europe and America, where the slag make is of the order of several million tons annually, the room problem and the cost of dumping slag has stimulated commercial and scientific research on the disposal problem. Currently, most iron plants in Europe can profitably dispose of at least 95 per cent of their slag make.

Sulphuric acid leaching at atmospheric pressure of a number of Australian nickeliferous laterites was examined in detail. The results obtained indicate that nickel can be extracted from these ores, although the conditions required to achieve about 90 per cent extraction vary widely. These differences in reactivity can be related to the types of nickel-bearing minerals present.Nickel is more readily extracted from nickel-bearing clays such as chlorite, than it is from nickel-containing goethite.The results clearly show the problems associated with the processing of complex ores such as the nickeliferous laterites, and they indicate the need for complete characterization of each deposit.

Alkaline leaching with sodium carbonate solution adjusted to pH 9·5 to 10·0 preferentially dissolves thorium from a mixture of rare earth and thorium hydroxides. Rare earth sodium carbonates form in the alkaline leaching stage.These are converted to rare earth oxides for use as optical and ophthalmic polishing agents. Quadrivalent cerium is extracted under similar alkaline leaching conditions.INTRODUCTIONAustralia has made significant contributions to mineral chemistry and mineral dressing. As often happens with an industrially immature country, research investigations often outstrip the ability or desire of commerce to exploit them. It is wrong to think exclusively in terms of export of raw materials. Imagination assists in developing world trends. The chemical utilization of mineral sands has interested a group of investigators, chiefly at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.) and, more recently, in the mining industry itself. From an international point of view the highlight of this work was Newnham's (1960) process for the separation of hafnium from zirconium. Earlier work at C.S.I.R.O. investigated the chlorination of rutile, zircon, and monazite. Assuming that titanium tetrachloride would be available in large quantities in the post war years, extensive work was done by Kraitzer, McTaggart, and Winter (1948) on organic compounds of titanium. This work led to the development of heat resistant paints, plastic compositions, and improved organic protective coatings that predated overseas work by up to seven years. (Post, Shiihara and Schwartz, 1961; Anon, 1955). Contributions were made to the production of refractory hard metals (Kraitzer, 1949; Kraitzer and Newnham, 1956). Pilkington and Wylie (1947) and Urie (1947) investigated the production of rare earths from monazite by an acid process.

The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralised bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulfides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralisation. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphic column and mineralogy of the sediments. A sedimentary origin is advocated for the deposit. Volcanism, thermal spring activity and high salinities, perhaps related to the Emu Fault, are considered as contributing factors to ore genesis. The metallurgy of this deposit is discussed in relation to its geologic history.

A way back in 1851-2 an army of diggers had commenced the conquest, of the now famous goldfields of Australasia. At that time, and in the Colony of Victoria, more that 10,000 were camped on and around the slopes of the silurian ridges over which Ballarat East h'as been built. A wonderfully rich golden harvest was soon gathered from the alluvial found high on these slopes, and from runs (or gutters) which got their rise on them, and were traced down gullies into a broad valley. In due course it was ascertained that the valley carried a main gutter which represented the unity of the higher ones, and further explorations proved this gutter to have a westerly and then a southerly trend toward and under a basaltic plateau, on the top ofwhich Ballarat West and Sebastopol now stand. In the records of alluvial gold mining all the world over the Ballarat field can be classed amongst the richest. Gold in pieces the size of beans, in, stringy filigree bits, in dust and in solid lumps (the largest of which weighed more than 2,200 ozs.), was obtained in the comparatively shallow ground on the slopes; and speaking generally, great and uniform richness was met with along a belt of country on which, in a north and south line, the present quartz mines of Ballarat East are at work. It was noticed by the diggers that when the gutters crossed the upturned edges of the ,strata, the gold deposits in them were patchy, and that when they trended north and south on this beltthey carried rich deposits for longer distances. In time it was also noticf!d that a class of stringy, irregular shaped quartz occurrences, in a bottom of soft slates, in the, immediate vicinity of tpe g)ltter, meant greater richness, and (in the aIluvial) on the higher ground slabs of quartz would now and then be met with, in which strings and spongy masses of gold were found. As the shallow alluvial became worked out the diggers turned their attention to the quartz occurrences, and, now and again the striking of a flat make of a very golden nature would cause quite a stir in the local mining world.

Estimation of iron ore grade distribution has been attempted using geostatistics and artificial neural network (ANN) based models for a banded iron formation (BIF) type iron ore deposit of East India. Geologically, it is a supergene iron ore formation through an enrichment process of parent material (BIFs) by gradual leaching of impurities, namely SiO2 and Al2O3. As the degree of leaching differs spatially, distribution of Fe varies depending on local controls of ore formation. While geostatistical methods work on models based on spatial correlations of mineralisation parameters, ANN models a non-linear distribution and is widely used as a global approximator. Spatial distribution modelling of Fe values has been carried out employing ordinary kriging (OK) and sequential Gaussian simulation (SGS). Non-linear modelling has been performed using hybrid neural networks (HNN) that provided an alternative option for grade estimation. Classical statistical modelling revealed a negatively skewed 3-parameter lognormal Fe population having a mean of 60.49 per cent with a skewness of -0.08 and a kurtosis of 2.60. Semi-variography and geostatistical estimation employing OK procedure led to block-by-block kriged estimates with associated kriging variance, which provided an overall mean kriged estimate and kriging variance of Fe as 60.29 per cent and 7.76 (per cent)2 respectively. SGS procedure revealed a mean of 60.71 per cent and a standard deviation of 5.89 per cent with minimum and maximum values as 45.12 per cent and 68.70 per cent respectively in respect of Fe. HNN model provided values of mean squared error (MSE) and correlation coefficient (R2) as 12.33 and 0.61 respectively, thereby exhibiting the robustness of the model to sustain maximum heterogeneity within the target domain. A comparison of Fe grade estimates obtained by kriging, simulation and HNN models more or less maintain similar distribution patterns that are close to the sample data. It is thus opined to carry out the grade prediction exercise employing all these three modelling approaches to obtain alternative scenarios for improved mine planning and design exercises. The City of Sydney is currently investing in a number of infrastructure projects that require tunnel excavations within the Triassic Hawkesbury Sandstone. It is generally accepted that this formation has high residual stresses of ‘tectonic’ origin, so much so that these stresses have been implicated in a number of well-known failures and problems for tunnelling. These include failure of ‘roof beams’ comprising discrete beds in the crown of tunnel excavations; stress-induced spalling and ‘slabbing’ of tunnel walls; shear displacement between beds causing the failure of rock bolts; strain in adjacent infrastructure and, the necessity for re-grouting of high conductivity fractures due to stress relief dilation after excavation. Whilst there is an extensive published database of in situ stress measurements comprising ‘hydrofrac’, ‘over-coring’ and ‘slotter’ stress measurements, these data indicate a considerable spread of results. The traditional approach to interpreting this data has been to attempt to fit linear correlations to stress versus depth data, based on personal experience and ‘back-analysis’ of monitoring data during construction. However, there are a number of such correlations in the literature and there is divergence of opinion regarding the assessment of ‘background’ in situ stress and appropriate upper and lower bound values for design. This paper provides a brief review of the published data; suggestions on an alternative ‘risk-based approach’ to assigning in situ stresses for design; and, proposals on how in situ stress tests may be conducted in future to improve the quality of the database available to designers.CITATION:Macklin, S, McKay, G and Erskine, M, 2014. About 15 per cent of total electricity (400 MkW) was generated by nuclear power plants in the world (2009) and about 36 000 tons of uranium has been mined in uranium mines annually. Radioactive waste material is produced from uranium mines and nuclear power plants. The wastes must be disposed or stored safely for long-term. If they leak and/or move from disposal or storage sites due to air/groundwater flow, then a serious environmental pollution can occur. Hence, multi-layer system has been proposed and employed in order to seal off these radioactive waste materials from biosphere. Basically, bentonite is now used for establishing absorbing and sealing layers in this system. However, the amount of high quality betonite is very limited and in some cases it is hard to be obtained.On the other hand, a great deal of refuse from coal burning plants is produced every year and the amount of it is expected to be higher each year, especially in developing countries. More than half of flyash is utilised and the remaining is disposed at the disposal sites. However, the life of the disposal site is limited and it is diff cult to find a new disposal site. It is requested that the percentage of the utilisation of the flyash be increased in every field.From the above two points of view, a flyash-based barrier layer/cover system is considered in this research and this paper discusses the applicability of flyash as a content of barrier layer/cover material based on the results of a series of laboratory tests.

IN dealing with this subject the intention is not to write a detailed description of the various methods in vogue on the Kalgoorlie field, but rather to give a brief outline of three of the methods which are most universally in force, and from which, ultimately, a few comparisons may be drawn. The three methods which the writer proposes embodying in this article are known as "The Rill," "The Flatback," and "The Shrinkage." For comparative purposes each method will be applied to a block of ore 500 feet in length, and opened up by levels 200 feet apart."The Rin" System. It is necessary in this system, for facilitating mullocking, to make connections between levels by rising and winzing at about every 100 feet or 150 feet along the orebody. After the leading stope is beaten off for the full length ofthe drive, the level is timbered. Single stulls are put in up to a width of fourteen feet. If the span is too great for stulls, set timbers or saddleback stuUs are used. Stulls are lagged over with 4-in gimlet poles, and wooden chutes are built at intervals of 50-feet. Ore passes are cribbed up through the filling directly above each chute, and are constructed of 7-in. round timber or 9 in x 3 in square timber, the passes measuring 4 ft x 4 ft in the clear.Occasionally a double pass may be carried up, one side serving as a travelling way. Stoping is commenced off the winzes, and rills are gradually formed, one on either end of each winze. The rills are generally at an angle of 37° off the horizontal, this allowing for the boring...

Geotechnical input is interwoven into the mining process at George Fisher South Mine from the planning and design of working areas to the closure of worked out areas and maintenance of life of mine and long term excavations. The methodology used consists of a mixture of application of established theoretical principles and guidelines derived from successful historical experience. In the development stage, including long term infrastructure excavations, the process takes into account the expected life of the excavation, usage and expected stress changes during its life span. On the stoping stage, the design process takes into account the local rock mass conditions, geological structure setting and previous experience in a particular orebody. Due to the high variation in age of currently used excavations, a rolling monitoring and risk assessment process for long term and life of mine excavations and infrastructure is maintained. This paper has as an output the process that must be followed to ensure an excavation on the highly dynamic mining environment at George Fisher South Mine is blasted and maintained in compliance with applicably commonly accepted safety and industry requirements.

Reasons are given for the seemingly excessive public concern with taxation of the mineral industry. Optimality of mineral extraction is a concept that requires careful definition in terms of one or more objectives. Once defined, the impact of taxation upon optimal mineral extraction may be studied; findings from earlier work on this topic are presented for two basically different cases. In conclusion it is observed that the pursuit of optimality requires the availability of highly skilled engineers; in the event of a large-scale mineral development it is this resource that is probably scarcest of all.

The works of Metal Manufactures Ltd are situated at Port Kemblam NSW, within a few hundred yards of a deep-water harbour. At present they occupy about 26 acres, and ample provision has been made for future extensions. Rail connection exists between various parts of the Works and the main South Coast Railway, the harbour jetties and the adjacent copper refinery of The Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Co Ltd. A plan of the works is shown in Fig 1.The company was incorporated in March 1916, and commenced production of copper wire in June 1918. Early in 1920, tube manufacture was undertaken, followed by telephone cable mnufacture in 1923. Today the Works consist of five principal sections: Founrdy, Tube Factory, Wire Factory, Cable Factory and Case and Drum Factory. Whilst the last four are engaged in producing the finished materials for despatch from the Works, the first-mentioned is engaged in producing copper, brass, and other non-ferrous billets for use in the Tube and Wire factories. In addition, there are Engineering and Metallurgical Departments supporting the manufacturing sections, and in these, as well as in all other sections of the Works, extensions have been carried out from time to time to provide for increased output and new types of products.

Batu Hijau is an island arc porphyry copper-gold deposit located in the southwest corner of Sumbawa Island in the Sunda-Banda archipelago of Indonesia. Southwest Sumbawa Island is underlain by Early Tertiary, low-K calc-alkaline to weakly alkaline volcanic and intrusive rocks. Within the mine area the oldest exposed rocks are medium- to thick-bedded, medium to coarse andesite volcanic lithic breccia, thin bedded, fine-grained volcaniclastic sandstones and mudstones and hypabyssal porphyritic andesite. In the eastern portion of the mine area there is a thick sequence of quartz diorite that postdates the andesites. A small stock of Equigranualar Quartz Diorite predates the Batu Hijau deposit and occupies the contact between the andesitic volcaniclastic sequence of rocks and the Porphyritic Quartz Diorite. Batu Hijau is a world-class copper-gold deposit that has a drill indicated mineable reserve of 914 million metric tonnes grading 0.525 per cent copper (10.58 billion pounds copper) and 0.403 g/t gold (11.8 million ounces gold). Mineralised material not in reserve accounts for an additional 580 million metric tonnes at 0.328 per cent Cu (4.19 billion pounds copper) and 0.171 g Au/T (3.19 million ounces gold), and including an oxide copper resource of 57 million tonnes at 0.37 per cent Cu and 0.12 g Au/T. Copper and gold mineralisation is directly related to quartz veining and wall rock alteration that developed with multiple tonalite porphyry intrusions. The tonalites were emplaced along the contact between the andesitic volcaniclastic rocks and quartz diorite intrusives. Copper and gold are zoned around the porphyry intrusions, which are designated by their contact-age relationships and other features as Old Tonalite, Intermediate Tonalite(s), and Young Tonalite(s). The Old Tonalite was the first copper-bearing intrusion, and although it is the smallest intrusion it has the highest quartz vein density, the strongest alteration and the highest grade. At least two tonalite porphyry intrusions followed the emplacement of the Old Tonalite. Each of these intrusions was associated with less quartz veining, weaker hydrothermal alteration and lower grade copper and gold than the previous intrusion. The intrusive cycle culminated with the emplacement of the Young Tonalite, which contains relatively few quartz veins, is weakly altered and mineralised. Hypogene hydrothermal alteration and sulphide mineralisation developed in five temporally and spatially overlapping stages. These stages consist of Early, Transitional, Late, Very Late, and I Zeolite alteration. Early alteration and sulphide mineralisation accompanied each tonalite porphyry intrusion, but with diminished intensity in each subsequent intrusion. Transitional and later stages of alteration and mineralisation postdate the tonalite porphyries and overprint Early stage alteration and mineralisation. Early alteration and mineralisation consisted of biotisation, secondary magnetite and plagioclase development, fine porphyry-style stockwork veining and ore mineralisation. Magnetite-biotite????quartz stringers and dark micaceous (biotite-sericite) veinlets were developed. The veinlets were accompanied by biotisation of magmatic mafic minerals and groundmass. Thin, irregular and discontinuous æAÆ type quartz veinlets and fine-grained chalcocite, digenite and bornite mineralisation accompanies the Early alteration. It is hypothesized that most of the copper mineralisation was originally deposited as bornite, digenite and chalcocite. Secondary plagioclase was added along the selvages of the early quartz veinlets. Early alteration is pervasive within and proximal to the tonalite porphyries. In the distal portions of the deposit, andalusite and anthophyllite formed at intermediate to shallow depths, and in the deeper portions of the deposit, respectively. The andalusite and anthophyllite probably developed at the same time as the early magnetite-biotite-quartz alteration in the core of the deposit. Transitional-age alteration consists of oligioclase/albite-sericite-chlorite- quartz-¦vermiculite and is associated with æBÆ quartz veins. Through-going planar æBÆ veins are thicker than æAÆ and æA-familyÆ veinlets and have chalcopyrite????bornite along vuggy centrelines and narrow oligioclase????albite alteration envelopes. Rare æCÆ chalcopyite¦quartz veinlets were also formed during Transitional alteration. During Transitional alteration early copper sulphide minerals (chalcocite, digenite and bornite) are converted to bornite and chalcopyrite. The majority of the copper (50 - 70 per cent) in the deposit is contained in ores in which chalcopyrite is the predominant sulphide. Late alteration consists of feldspar destruction and replacement by sericite and other minerals. The late alteration is accompanied by the development of æDÆ sulphide veinlets and veins. These veins consist of pyrite and quartz????chalcopyrite. Within the halos of the late pyritic veinlets biotite is replaced by sericite, quartz-sericite, quartz-andalusite, or quartz-pyrophyllite+kaolinite replace plagioclase, and magnetite is converted to specularite and/or pyrite. In the periphery of the deposit, the feldspar destructive alteration, together with outer zones of Transitional-age alteration, constitutes what is commonly referred to as a æpropylitic zoneÆ. Very Late hydrothermal alteration is also characterised by feldspar destruction, but differs from Late alteration in that feldspar is replaced by smectite in association with sericite and chlorite. Sulphide mineralisation in this stage consists of sphalerite, galena, tennantite, pyrite and chalcopyrite. The last stage or I Zeolite alteration consists of low-temperature, open space filling consisting of stilbite or laumontite¦calcite. Supergene oxidisation of the orebody extends to a maximum depth of 210m. Isolated deep oxidation occurs along open fracture zones to depths of ~400 metres along æDÆ vein filled fracture zones. Weak supergene copper enrichment occurs in a thin horizon (15 to 60 m thick) that blankets the top of the deposit. The main supergene copper mineral is secondary æsootyÆ chalcocite replacement of sulphide grains and as veins.

Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C25073 was proposed by industry stakeholders seeking a potential solution that improves underground air quality and reduces operational costs associated with technology used to control diesel particulate emissions in the underground coal mining environment.The need to protect workers from diesel particulate matter (DPM) has lead the underground coal mining industry to install disposable filter systems on their vehicles. While the disposable filters are efficient at removing significant amounts of DPM, the following major issues have arisen:- high cost of operations; disposable filters cost $A250–300 each and need to be changed at least once per shift resulting in an estimated cost of up to $A164 M/a, in filters alone, to the NSW underground coal mining industry- improper installation, damaged seals and lack of installing a new filter when the old filter is removed; workers are still being exposed to excessive amounts of DPM.The ACARP project successfully demonstrated significant DPM emissions reduction comparable to the incumbent disposable technology on a proof-of-concept wall-flow diesel particulate filter (DPF) system, as well as satisfactory system robustness when assessed using an industry representative test cycle representing operations of a load haul dump (LHD) vehicle typical of that used by the Australian underground coal industry. It was noted in testing that the technology increased modal NO2 formation, but was compliant over typical operational duty cycles.One of the key benefits with the use of a wall-flow DPF system is its tamper-proof design, mitigating the risk of operating unfiltered diesel plant in poorly ventilated areas. Elimination of the need for continual replacement of disposable filters provides significant operational savings estimated to be up to 80 per cent of the incumbent technology.In addition to the above, the project also delivered a number of significant contributions to the knowledgebase of the Australian and international coal industry with regard to the characterisation of operations and control of emissions.CITATION:Coplin, N, 2017. A homely simile will serve to epitomise an interpretation of the rock structures and associated phenomena of the block of country under review, as it appears to the writer.Disregarding the many thousands of feet of overburden that have been eroded away during the ages, the present denuded surface and rock systems below may be pictured as a slab of some titanie ribbon cake that has suffered much damage from rough handling and exposure, yet retaining much of the original symmetry of its superimposed layers of variegated colour and texture.Lateral pressure has crumpled the cake into a series of irregular corrugations and, in parts, has caused some of the layers to crush and slide over their neighbours.Following upon this squeeze, the cake has been severed into segments and rhomboidal slabs by vertical cuts, and these portions have been severely jostled one against its neighbour, crushing the faces of contact and dragging the contiguous layers in the direction of movement.The variegated icing of the cake is represented by intercalated sills of amphibolite, pegmatite, and aplite, and the body of the cake by highly altered sedimentary rocks.The icing has been assailed by the rats of erosion with such effect that only residuals of the original structures remain. The body of the cake has suffered successive waves of igneous invasion in the order of lode pegmatite, followed by zine, iron,copper, and finally by silver-lead. These successive invaders found difficult access, along certain of the vertical cuts, to the more succulent layers of the cake, where, gorging to repletion, many were imprisoned and entombed for the future service of mankind.

In the last 30 years, human appropriation of global renewable resources has accelerated to the point where 35 per cent of the earthÆs land surface is now in managed agro-ecosystems, consumptive water use consumes between 50 per cent and 85 per cent of freshwater supply and 60 per cent of ecosystem services are utilised in an unsustainable manner. There are virtually no landscapes in which renewable resources are not already fully allocated among different economic and environmental uses. Furthermore, it is increasingly recognised that water availability issues do not exist in isolation but are linked with the related environmental issues of biodiversity preservation, the carbon cycle, soil degradation, and energy use and supply. It is against this background that the sustainable management of water in mining is increasingly developing a strategic viewpoint where water is viewed as a resource within an interconnected landscape, having economic, environmental and social value and providing a range of environmental services in the provision of public and private goods. This paper explores the issues associated with sustainable management of water in mining from a strategic viewpoint. The cumulative impacts of multiple water users, both within and outside the mining sector, is increasingly threatening the security of supply for all users. To quantitatively assess the ætrueÆ value of water it is necessary to: Better understand the science of ecosystem functioning and how human actions impact on environmental processes. Develop appropriate policy, finance and governance structures to support innovative programs that preserve ecosystem function and services (including market based instruments). Apply knowledge as interventions across landscapes in ways that maximise benefits and minimise unintended consequences taking into account differences in the value of water among sectors. A strategic viewpoint of water management relies on knowledge to guide decision making that has been acquired at a range of scales from mine site to mining region. This knowledge must be based on rigorous science, sound data and syntheses of different types of information. Strategic management of water resources will better position the industry in terms of understanding the risks posed by complex, interlinked environmental issues that are increasingly impacting on future access to land and renewable resources, including water, thereby ensuring miningÆs future social licence to operate.

The objective of a mine planning exercise is to plan a safe mine that maximises net present value (NPV) for the project. Two primary elements are key to design of a mine plan optimised to maximise profit: selection of an optimised production rate and selection of an optimised equipment fleet. Both depend upon accurate estimations of capital and operating costs for the equipment and for the life cycle of the mining operation. Once a trial production rate is determined, a primary equipment fleet, ie excavators, haulers, and blasthole drills, can be determined based on material characteristics and haulage distances and gradients. An auxiliary fleet, dozers, road maintainers, service trucks, etc can be determined using less rigid productivity criteria. With an equipment fleet determined, operating and support personnel can be assigned based on shift requirements and equipment operating needs; and material and supply requirements can be estimated. Knowing the areal dimensions of the major equipment items, road widths and repair shop dimensions can be determined. Personnel numbers and supply requirements determine the square metre sizes of offices, change rooms, and storage facilities. Reliable sources of capital and operating unit prices and costs for all these items are referenced in the paper. Once preliminary capital and operating cost estimates are calculated by applying unit costs to equipment, personnel, material and supply needs, potential profit can be tested using DCF techniques. An optimised mine plan can then be determined by testing the potential profitability of multiple mine production rates. Because of the economies of scale, full capital and operating cost estimates must be completed for each production rate in order to produce meaningful comparisons.

Lower greenschist quartzo-feldspathic schists within the N-S trending Earnslaw Synform of the Upper Wakatipu area are pervaded by late-stage quartz filled extensional and extensional shear fractures, with quartz-scheelite lodes infilling normal faults. Exposed veins/lodes mapped over at least 1000 km2 define a paleoflow system developed during late metamorphic exhumation of the schist. Both veins and lodes have consistent angular relationships to the schist foliation independent of their location on the Earnslaw synform. Unfolding the synform leads to a regional subhorizontal foliation and a systematic set of subvertical quartz veins striking NNW extending over a depth interval >5 km, striking parallel to a set of normal faults hosting the quartz-scheelite lodes. The structures define an extensional regime with s1 sub-vertical, s3 oriented WSW-ENE, a low differential stress, and suprahydrostatic fluid pressures.   The quartz-scheelite lodes (<2 m thick) occupy faults which cross-cut the quartz veins, and are traceable for a few hundred metres, at most. The lodes consist of laminated and/or massive quartz, slivers of crushed and folded schist, random and discontinuous lenses of scheelite with clay selvages separating the lode from relatively undisturbed wallrock schist. Textural evidence suggests that slip developed incrementally with total displacement on faults during lode formation on the order of a few ten's of metres.   The distribution of Glenorchy veins demonstrates broad scale hydrothermal flow through low-permeability schist, channelled within dilatant mesh style structures comprising interconnected shear and extension fractures. Flow through the lodes was likely derived from the greater surrounding area via the interlinked network of fractures and focused into the low displacement shears. Available evidence suggests the system developed together in a uniform extensional stress regime toward the bottom half of the seismogenic regime.
