Block modelling is a well-established method for modelling ore reserves as a basis for strategic mine planning and mine development. Off-Earth mining, particularly of asteroids, can benefit from block models; however, the significantly different characteristics of asteroids and their methods of mining require reconsideration of the geometry and annotations of block models. Terrestrial block models consist of rectangular prisms within Euclidean coordinate systems. Their labels and parameters typically include location within a mine-specific coordinate system, x, y and z dimensions, specific gravity, hardness, grades of metals of interest and so on.These data provide an input to mine design and strategic mine planning. Mining asteroids may require different coordinate systems (eg spherical, elliptical or cylindrical, rather that Euclidean) and attributes that vary from Earth-based block models. These include: variable gravitational vectors throughout the block modelrotational moment or accelerationrotation rates. Materials within asteroids may show different isotopic compositions. Asteroid mining has the unique characteristic of a mine being identical with an asteroid. The position of the asteroid/mine in space and its full orbital elements provide critical inputs to mission design and costing. Hence, the block model concept needs to be extended with this metadata. The orbital position and behaviour of the Earth must be included for active mine planning, and increasing automation of mine planning and operations needs to consider terrestrial weather and telecommunications infrastructure. Financial planning requires analysis of the net present value of extraterrestrial mining compared with terrestrial alternatives, so a fully automated mining enterprise should integrate terrestrial and extraterrestrial block models at different scales and resolutions. The cover (cap) over the tailings pit at Nabarlek uranium mine must be structurally stable as it will act as a barrier to radon gas emission and have to contain other long-lived radionuclides. Structural stability is primarily an issue of erosional stability in the context of a design life of thousands of years. The primary agent of erosion is fluvial, dominated by rainwash, overland flow, filling and gullying in the local area. Other agents of erosion are of less concern although biogenic agents of erosion (eg termites and windthrow) may enhance fluvial activity. Several methods may be used to assess erosional stability. They fall into two main categories, namely erosion modelling and geomorphic modelling. The former is illustrated by the Universal Soil Loss Equation in which parameters describing aspects of the geotechnical and hydrological properties of the rehabilitated surface are used as input for the modelling of erosion rates. The latter is illustrated by estimates of gully and valley erosion using empirical models. Estimates of the erosion rates and stability of the Nabarlek cover are presented. The two main techniques are complementary and it is argued that rehabilitation design must make use of both approaches when estimating erosion and geomorphic stability. More recent developments in geomorphic modelling using numerical techniques incorporate both approaches.

Field and laboratory data combined with computational modelling have been used to predict the pit water quality for the Highway Reward mine. Open pit mining of the Highway Reward copper-gold deposit has produced a final mining void with a diameter of 600 m and a depth of 280 m. This void will be left to fill with ground and surface water once pumping of pit water ceases. Several leaching tables were constructed to simulate weathering reactions and surface water run-off in the major pit wall units during a 200-day leaching experiment. Following the Paris Agreement adopted in 2015 and the SDGs, reduction of CO2 emissions has been taken up as an issue worldwide, and the steel industry, which has a particularly large emission, is required to significantly reduce it. Most of the CO2 generated in the steel industry is generated from the ironmaking process, due to the use of coke and its raw material coal in the ironmaking process. JFE Steel Corporation has been considering the use of hydrocarbon-based gaseous fuels and liquid fuels as a partial alternative to coke breeze used in the sintering process since 2006, immediately after the Kyoto Protocol came into effect in 2005. In a laboratory study, a pot test was used to investigate the effect of the type of fuel, its amount and its injection method on the heat pattern in sinter bed. As a result, the authors developed a technology, in which a predetermined amount of gas fuel or liquid fuel was injected from the surface of sintering bed to extend the holding time of 1200°C or higher at which liquid phase sintering occurs in the layer, to improve the sinter strength while reducing the amount of coke breeze. The authors succeeded in putting this technology to practical use using hydrocarbon-based gas fuel in 2009 and achieved a maximum annual reduction of 60 000 tons of CO2 per sintering machine. In this report, the authors introduce the results of laboratory studies on the use of various energy sources, the practical application of the technology for injecting hydrocarbon-based gaseous fuel into the sintering machine, and the operational results.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd (CNR) operates iron ore mines in the Koolyanobbing region of Western Australia. Ore is mined from three locations, separated by many kilometres. The ore is stockpiled at these locations, according to an in-house ore classification system (based on grade and source) and then trucked to the crushing and screening plant at Koolyanobbing. Lump and fines products are railed to Esperance for ship loading and export to Asian customers. CNR prides itself on the relatively low inter-shipment grade variability of the products. The Koolyanobbing crusher is fed using a daily blend plan, generated to maintain lump and fines product grades within acceptable tolerance ranges around targets. Achieving low variability requires predicting lump and fines grades as accurately as practical from the estimated head grades of the ROM ores potentially going into the blend. The grade prediction model may be either a direct prediction of crushed lump and fines grades and lump percentage, or be split into two stages: the bias between blasthole estimated head grade and crusher head grade and then the lump-fines algorithm for splitting the head grade between lump and fines products. The lump-fines algorithm comprises the percentage of lump and the difference between the lump and fines grades. We describe a weighted least squares (WLS) regression model for predicting crusher grades and lump proportion from the estimated head grade for Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3, Mn and S. The method is applied to CNR production data, where the regression model explains approximately 60 per cent of the variance in the crushed ore grade, for both lump and fines. A further small but significant improvement in prediction can be achieved by including the ore classification data in the model. The regression errors exhibit strong positive serial correlation, indicating trends in grade error across multiple blend records. To compensate for the longer-term error, an exponentially smoothed model was developed and applied to the daily grade blend errors. This gave an increase in the longer-term variance explained and therefore an improvement in grade prediction.

One method of forecasting prices of metals is based on analysis of historic relationships between prices, inventories and consumption. The first, but generally overlooked step in this analysis should be to remove from the inventory and consumption figures the effects of seasonal variations. The next step is to construct diagrams which show prices plotted against ratios of inventories to consumption. These diagrams indicate that, when inventories are high, prices show little response to changes in inventories. Below a critical level of inventories, however, the psychology of the market changes and small changes in inventories lead to large moves in prices. The critical level of inventories is termed the "pinch-point"; the diagram which shows prices in relation to ratios of inventories and consumption may be called a "pinch-point diagram".

A combination of new radiometric age dates, local field relationships and the regional tectonic history indicate that the low sulphidation, fault breccia-hosted, epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Umuna is related to continental rifting processes rather than subduction induced deformation and magmatism. K-Ar and Ar-Ar age dating of secondary sericite associated with the gold-silver mineralisation indicates that the alteration crystallised between 4.0 and 3.2 Ma, whereas relative age relationships and SHRIMP II U-Pb dating of the abundant Boiou porphyry intrusions on Misima confirm that the calc-alkaline plutonism is significantly older (8.1 f 0.4 Ma) and related to a different tectonothermal event. The Woodlark Basin sea floor spreading centre occurs to the north of Misima and has continued to propagate westwards, into the continental basement of the Papuan Peninsular, since the end of the Miocene. The westernmost tip of sea floor spreading centre is presently to the east of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands but would have been to the east of Misima roughly 4 Ma. Many of the young tectonothermal features in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands (hydrothermal activity and associated epithermal mineralisation, metamorphic core complex exhumation, detachment faulting, peralkaline volcanism, half graben type basin formation) can be attributed to major extensional deformation ahead of the propagating rift system. Similar tectonothermal features on Misima are temporally associated with the epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Umuna, suggesting that the D'Entrecasteaux Islands are a modern day tectonic analogue for Misima at the time of precious metal mobility and deposition. The relative infrequency of fatalities and other serious events can give them an appearance of being random, of being beyond any reasonable degree of anticipation and prevention. In fact, the vast majority of these events result from exposures that are identifiable, measurable, and manageable. The lessons of prominent incidents, such as the Space Shuttle Columbia, OxyÆs Piper Alpha, Esso Longford, BP Texas City, Massey Mine, as well as lessons from single fatality events, is that alongside the proximate causes of each incident, there also coexisted an underlying fabric of systems, mechanisms, and culture that allowed risk in the workplace to persist and often to become normalised. All of these ingredients of the organisationÆs safety fabric lend themselves to the influence and intervention of senior leaders. The difficulty is that traditional injury prevention paradigms are not sufficient for addressing the precursors that lead up to catastrophic and fatal events. A recent study of such events, led by Dr Thomas Krause concluded that the descriptive aspect of HeinrichÆs safety triangle is useful, but that the predictive aspect is not. The study surfaced reasons why a reduction in less serious injuries does not necessarily correspond to a proportionate reduction in catastrophic and fatal risks. This presentation expands on the findings to include the concept of exposure to the event potential linked to precursor events and the framework for leading an organisation to be both cognisant and effective in eliminating such events.CITATION:Russell, R, 2012. The Permian rocks at Gympie were first studied as far back as 1868 in conjunction with the discovery of gold. The relationship of the Gympie Group to other sequences in the Gympie Composite Terrane is an important subject of investigations in a new mapping project of the Geological Survey Program of the Department of Resource Industries.In two areas the Gympie Group has been divided into four defined formations. They are the Highbury Volcanics (base), Ram mutt Formation, South Curra Limestone and Tamaree Formation (top) in the Gympie area, and the Mant basalt (base), Kolbar Formation, Gigoomgan Limestone and Teebar Formation (top) in the Gigoomgan area. Geochemical and lithological evidence from the basal volcanics of the Gympie Group (Highbury Volcanics, Mant basalt) indicate that they developed in an intraoceanic island arc setting. The overlying volcaniclastic sediments (Rammutt Formation, Kolbar Formation), which contain some continentally-derived material, are mainly of local derivation and shallow-water marine. A hiatus is present at the top of the Early Permian Rammutt Formation and Kolbar Formation. Following the hiatus, limestone sedimentation characteristic of a basin of restricted circulation developed in the Late Permian. There is some evidence of a hiatus between the limestone deposition of the Gigoomgan and South Curra Limestones and the overlying probable turbidite deposits of the Teebar and Tamaree Pnrmatinnc

Variety among deserts is nearly as great as among other climatic environments. Common to most deserts, and to areas downwind from them, is the dominance of aeolian transport of surface material, at least during some seasons of the year. The result is dilution of local surface materials with varying proportions of chemically uniform fine sand and silt, often imported by the wind from remote areas. Fortunately, desert pavement,.even though separated from bedrock by a meter or more of nearly pure loess, is simply a diluted reflection of nearby bedrock. Infiltration of loess through the surface debris and the rudimentary soil-forming processes in the desert usually preserve the integrity of the pavement. This pavement, or its "downstream" derivatives, provides a suitable sample for exploration geochemistry if proper care is taken to circumvent the aeolian dilution. The simplest and most commonly used method of circumventing the dilution is to use a coarse fraction of soils or stream sediments, discarding or retaining the finer fraction depending upon the magnitude of the dilution. Where the coarse surface debris is composed of rock chips representative of the bedrock sources, the method is successful. Under most circumstances the coarse fraction of the surface material will give a fair representation of gross lithology and will occasionally give an indication of mineral- ization. The major drawback to this approach is that selective weathering and erosion in the vicinity of mineral deposits often lead to the loss of ore minerals into the finer fraction, leaving a coarse residue enriched in feldspar and particularly in quartz; thus, the geochemical signature from a mineral deposit is effectively reduced or completely masked. The second most commonly used method to overcome aeolian dilution, and probably the most effective at present, is to use a heavy- mineral concentrate. The 4 km long Huguenot Toll Tunnel in the Western Cape region of South Africa celebrated its tenth anniversary on 18 March 1998. At present a single (South) bore with bi-directional traffic flow is operational. The North bore was originally excavated but not lined and equipped.The tunnel is fitted with a semi-transverse ventilation system comprising 45/350 kW two speed fresh-air and 1 MW exhaust air fans at each of the portals. These provide ventilation through fresh and exhaust air ducts above the ceiling separated by movable partition doors. Secondary air ducts deliver air at low level. The fan control depends on the levels of CO pollution or visibility measured at six positions along the tunnel.The system performed well during initial tests and under conditions of low traffic volumes. As traffic volumes increased, and user complaints of bad air in the tunnel were received on several occasions, we realised that we had a problem. Tests confirmed that natural airflow within the tunnel induced by prevailing meteorological conditions outside the portals affected the performance of the ventilation system causing a plug of bad air to be trapped at varying positions along the operating tunnel.The control systems in the tunnel are presently being upgraded as described by Gray, Rieckert and Bullock (1998). As part of the retrofit we are implementing a new control strategy for the ventilation system which takes into account the external weather conditions. This paper discusses the 24 month long meteorological data gathering exercise, which is on-going, and explores the philosophies planned for controlling the ventilation system. The correlation between winds external to the tunnel and induced airflow inside the tunnel are examined. The effects of the weather induced airflow on the existing ventilation system are considered and proposals given for taking these effects into account in the new control strategy. These include the implementation of an expert system to predict ambient airflow from prevailing weather conditions, and the use of airflow measurements taken in the uncompleted North bore as a cross-check.The paper highlights the need to take cognisance of external weather conditions when designing tunnel ventilation systems.

Unlocking maximum value is essential when designing a stope and the associated drill and blast packets. This is becoming increasingly important at Olympic Dam as the operation continues to expand south into the new mining areas away from existing infrastructure, increasing operating costs and required capital investment; into areas with less competent ground conditions, requiring smaller stopes and increased interactions. The introduction of Orica’s WebGenTM system is one way in which Olympic Dam can continue to unlock value into the future by decoupling traditional drill and blast limitations. The Lime 390 stope was the first stope at Olympic Dam to trial the new technology on the last blast packet. This paper reviews the drill and blast design of the Lime 390 stope, including the technical and operational challenges associated with the stope and the trial of the Orica’s WebGenTM system for the firing of the last blast packet.

The City of Kalgoorlie/Boulder is situated approximately 600 kilometres to the east of Perth (Fig. 1), and is the major regional centre of the Eastern Goldfields, supporting a population of approximately 25,000. The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines in 1989 brought the existing operat- ing entities adjacent to the city under common ownership and management. The Joint Venturers forming the management company are Homestake Gold of Australia and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (a Normandy/Poseidon com- pany). This traditional underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding 40.8 million ounces of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 grams per tonne. Historically the heart of the operation has been the famous Golden Mile located on the Eastern perimeter of the city, in the area known as Fimiston. The other significant operations that form KCGM are the Mt Percy Open Pit and the Mt Charlotte Underground Operation. KCGM's current production is 520,000 ounces per year, with the com- bined Fimiston operations (open cut and underground) contributing 400,000 ounces. The current expansion will increase production levels by a further 150,000 ounces. Traditionally 98 per cent of gold has been sourced from underground areas, however the recent upsurge of open cut operations is rapidly overturning this historical relationship.

Gold mining companies who are signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (visit www.cyanidecode.org for further information) are required to measure WAD cyanide on-line and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of specified limits. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5 such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Recognising and in response to the gold mining industryÆs need for an on-line WAD cyanide measurement device, Mintek recently developed the WAD Cynoprobe. The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide from metal-cyano complexes. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand <-> Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The instrument proved to be accurate and reliable in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. It has gained wide-spread commercial acceptance both locally and internationally. However, itÆs recent exposure to complex ore types have called for refinements to the analysis technique. It has been further developed to improve its precision and accuracy and to remove reagent and thiosulfate interferences. Its compatibility with the most commonly used destruction oxidants has also recently been investigated. The WAD Cynoprobe may be configured to measure both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately 5 min, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. Proper oxidant dosage control and monitoring of effluent concentration levels will ultimately result in less cyanide and post-destruction salts discharged into the environment.

The mining of high-grade narrow vein deposits is a predominant field of activity in the precious metal sector. These types of deposits are located throughout the globe and have a significant presence in mining operations. The principle factor that has undermined the profitability and effectiveness of mining such ore zones is the substantial dilution that occurs when blasting with explosives during extraction. In order to minimise ore dilution, the thermal fragmentation mining method enables the operator to extract a narrow mineralised corridor, 30 cm to 1 m wide (according to the true width of the ore vein). By inserting a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and air into a pilot hole previously drilled directly into the vein, a thermal reaction occurs spalling the rock and enlarging the hole to 30 - 100 cm in diameter. This patented method produces highly concentrated ore, resulting in 400 - 500 per cent less dilution when compared to conventional mining methods. The mining method was conceived with the aim of mining ounces, not tonnes. This method of extraction, reduces the environmental impact of mining operations since much smaller quantities of rock are displaced, stockpiled, and treated using chemical agents. The fully mechanised equipment operated by a two-person team, maximises the effectiveness of skilled personnel, increases productivity, and reduces risks of injuries. Important economic benefits are generated for large- and small-scale mining operations alike. For large-scale operations, the mining method increases mining reserves, lowers the cost per ounce, and increases the total profitability of existing mine operations. The method also significantly lowers costs and risks of developing and mining small-scale deposits, requiring less investment capital, shortening the payback period, thus reducing the lending risk.  Combined with a small modular processing unit able to process between 100 - 300 tons per day, the method substantially lowers the financial break-even point for small-scale mining operations in a narrow vein environment. The company has been working with the technology at its Rocmec 1 mining site; results achieved and future developments are discussed.

The Airborne Thematic Mapper is an eleven channel digital scanner which acquires image data in the visible, near infra-red, short wave infra-red and thermal infra-red wave- lengths. A description of the system is presented which includes details of the operating wavelengths and performance parameters of the scanner. Consideration is also given to the aircraft installation requirements. During January 1984 the scanner surveyed the mineral rich areas of Leonora, Laverton and Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. This is a region of intense exploration activity for gold and base metals. Some 30,000 square kilometres were systematically surveyed in a period of ten days. This scanner was flown at 7,000 metres altitude giving a ground pixel size of 17.5 by 17.5 metres. The flight line spacing was 8 kilometres. The overall project took some thirty days from conception to completion. The planning and execution of this operation are described in detail. The resulting magnetic tapes provided 11 channels of digital image data over a 30,000 square kilometre area and a variety of image processing techniques were employed in order to capitalise fully on the results. The imagery provides a powerful tool for the geological mapping of the terrain. The data can also be used to monitor the environmental effects of mining operations.

In response to the ever-increasing challenges facing the modern gold mining industry and the need for improved gold recoveries within all processing streams, CSIRO has upgraded its latest automated mineralogical analysis system, QemSCAN (formerly QEM*SEM), with special purpose hardware that speeds up the location and measurement of precious metal-bearing phases. By rapidly scanning the surface of polished blocks, and accepting only fields that contain the minerals of interest, QemSCAN is able to find, map, and quantify target minerals in extreme detail. Phase identification and quantification is achieved by placing a grid of points over the target particle and collecting X-ray information at each analysis point. The resulting mineral maps provide the metallurgist with a complete textural description of all gold-bearing phases within the product measured, together with quantification of the gold phases in terms of their modal abundance, particle size, mineral associations, relative contributions to gold deportment and liberation characteristics. Examples are presented which illustrate how QemSCAN is able to find and quantify gold-bearing phases within low-grade ores from the Super Pit, Kalgoorlie. This work is the result of a collaborative project between Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), CSIRO Minerals, and the University of Queensland, and is on-going.

McArthur River Mine is located approximately 50 km south-east of the NT township of Borroloola and approximately 120 km from the Gulf of Carpentaria. The mine hosts a series of layered shallow dipping tabular orebodies, with current reserves of approximately 22 Mt, grading 13.6 per cent zinc, 6.3 per cent lead and 65 g/t silver. Owing to economic considerations, the lower most orebody (No 2 orebody) has been selected for initial mine production. Following the completion of the No 2 orebody, mining will transfer to the lower grade and metallurgically more complex No 4 orebody. The mine employs a total of 235 people throughout the underground and surface areas. The majority of the workforce work a fly-in/fly-out, seven-day- on/seven- day- off roster with 12-hour shifts. Presently, a further 18 contractors are involved in trial mining areas. An apparent dip room and pillar technique has been selected as the primary mining method. Officially opened in September 1995, the current production rate of 1.2 Mt per annum will eventually escalate to 1.5 Mt per annum. Though most production is achieved through the use of conventional loaders, trucks and jumbos, the recent development of methods utilising scrapers, hand held machines and modified jumbos has produced encouraging results in steeper dipping areas of the mine. Initial production has been hindered by several factors including extensive and largely unpredictable faulting, worse than expected ground conditions and difficulties with some mining equipment. Compounded by the relatively thin 3 m ore seam, initial mining resulted in high dilution and poor production. This paper describes the development of unique planning and production systems that were evolved in order to overcome these problems and achieve the targeted production rates and head grade.
