This paper presents a metaheuristic solution to the optimisation of open pit long-term production scheduling with a stockpile and geological uncertainty. The optimisation formulation is a two-stage stochastic integer programming (SIP) model that determines the optimal mining sequence that maximises the total discounted cash flow, while penalising for high deviations from production targets. A parallel implementation of Tabu Search is proposed to accelerate the solution of the SIP formulation and take full advantage of multicore computer processing. Different variants of the proposed algorithm are applied to a case study to assess the performance of the parallel approach. The proposed algorithm and variants are benchmarked using linear relaxation of the complete problem to determine robustness and provide a better overview of the related performance. The results show a net improvement over the sequential solution, and the new proposal seems to be promising when working with a large-scale data set.CITATION:Senécal, R and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. Forty years ago Dr Pierre M Gy, a metallurgist, introduced variography as applied to monitoring a process. Consequently, his followers used the variogram to elaborate meaningful process control charts, especially since 1993. The name æChronostatisticsÆ was suggested several times by Gy as a logical name for this new science. The intent was to draw a parallel between the variogram identifying the variability components affecting a process parameter as a function of time, and the variogram used in geostatistics identifying the variability components of a given mineral content as a function of space. Heterogeneity problems encountered have indeed strong similarities. However, there is a fundamental difference. The variogram used in geostatistics is often stationary within a given type of mineralisation. While investigating a dynamic process through Chronostatistics, there is no such thing as a stationary variogram. Still, the evolving variogram provides essential information about subtle, often overlooked process difficulties. Chronostatistics is especially useful for management to take advantage of existing data that are often a forgotten source of valuable information to pinpoint recurring structural problems. The superiority of Chronostatistics over conventional statistical process control approaches is that it links observations to the inherent heterogeneity of materials under investigation, therefore to the sampling theory. Chronostatistics is like opening a new world to the metallurgist, making the process variability speak in a more comprehensive and in-depth way. Several case studies are presented to demonstrate the potency of this new science. For each of them, observations lead to solutions for continuous process improvement, therefore attractive economic opportunities. The philosophy is this: if a control chart shows a process is out of control, it must also suggest logical and pragmatic directions for solutions. The intent of this presentation is to vastly expand on these valuable, almost forgotten ideas.

Centennial Coal operates the Springvale and Angus Place longwall mining operations that extract coal beneath the Newnes Plateau in the Western Coalfields of New South Wales. Springvale and Angus Place mines have a history of difficult geotechnical conditions, where mining operations are conducted with a thick coal roof interbedded with numerous claystone units and relatively high levels of vertical and horizontal stress. The combination of a relatively high stress regime and weak laminated roof has led to numerous roof failures throughout the mine’s life.Following underground roadway development, the mine roadways can experience high levels of roof movement that can lead to roof falls. Two-point wire extensometers (known as ‘telltales’) are extensively used for roadway condition monitoring. Along with extensive other geological and geotechnical data, monitoring data is used to prepare geotechnical hazard plans that are then used in all areas of mine planning to allow for safe and efficient operation of the mine.This paper presents a case study of the use of a new software tool that allows time-scaled visualisation of monitoring data in the context of longwall and development face positions and installed strata support. It can be used in the identification of geotechnical risk factors and their interaction with the mining process to allow a more robust geotechnical hazard process. The concept of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop and the organ- isation to achieve its construction are covered in the companion papers (Reference 1, 2) and will not be repeated here. The Victorian Railways, as well as being the eventual operator of the Loop when it is completed by MURLA, have also been responsible as "Contractors" to MURLA for the construction of the "cut and cover" or "box" tunnels and related approach works located on existing Railway property. These tunnel connections link the existing suburban system to the new underground works. The following tabulation indicates the significant work volume involved in this cut and cover tunnelling exercise and which is covered in some detail by this paper.

Material transport plays a significant role in the efficiency of horizontal grinding mills - autogenous (AG)/semi-autogenous (SAG)/ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a greenfield milling operation at Mirabela MineratpoÆs SantaRita Nickel operation located in north eastern Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 Mt/a (575 t/h) to produce a P80 of 125 ¦m with ten to 12 per cent ball charge in the SAG mill. However, it has been operating as an ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity was achieved in few days and was gradually increased to an average of +800 t/h, still operating in ABC mode. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30 ft + 15.4 ft 8.5 MW SAG mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPLÖ) in closed circuit with a HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20 ft + 28.4 ft 5.5 MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with a Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 + 26 in CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimisation and future development works. The iron ore producer Rana Gruber AS is situated in northern Norway just below the Arctic Circle, and has been producing hematite and magnetite concentrates for more than 60 years. Since the late 1990s, the major part of the production comes from a sublevel stoping underground operation after many years of open pit mining. Despite moderate mining depth, the operations have experienced considerable rock stress problems due to quite high tectonic, horizontal stresses. To manage the problems, comprehensive rock mechanics investigations have been carried out by SINTEF, a major contract research organisation. This has included in situ rock stress measurements, laboratory investigations and numerical modelling. Based on this and practical experience, satisfactory design of vertical and horizontal pillars was achieved. At depth, the ore width increases from 30–40?m to more than 100?m. This, together with a major planned increase in production, called for a change of the mining method. After thorough investigations and considerations, it was decided to change to sublevel caving, very much like the LKAB system. The development of the new system has been closely followed up by rock mechanics measures, including 3D numerical modelling and comprehensive monitoring of deformations and rock stress changes. To achieve a satisfactory caving of the hanging wall, all vertical and horizontal pillars in the sublevel stoping area had to be removed. This has been a challenging task, and the development of the caving has been slow until recently. The ANZECC/ARMCANZ (2000) Water Quality Guidelines (the Guidelines) are the primary reference used in Australia and New Zealand for managing and regulating water quality. For most mining operations in Queensland, the environmental authority (EA – licence) incorporates the national default guideline values (GVs) for ecosystem protection as trigger levels (TLs). Exceedances of TLs ‘trigger’ further investigation and reporting. A review of the surface water compliance history at a metalliferous mine in North West Queensland identified minor exceedances of the cobalt GV as a common trigger for investigation and compliance reporting.The reliability of GVs is dependent on the availability and quality of ecotoxicology data for the relevant contaminant. The current national default GV for cobalt of 1.4 µg/L is classified as a low reliability GV due to the lack of available data at the time it was derived (ANZECC/ARMCANZ, 2000).The Guidelines are presently being revised and the toxicant GVs will be available as a set of web-based values and associated technical briefs. The new platform will enable the timely revision of existing GVs and inclusion of GVs for additional toxicants. Cobalt was considered a priority toxicant for the Guidelines’ revision, but was not included in the revision process.A preliminary review of the international literature indicated that at least 15 additional chronic cobalt toxicity studies had been published since 2000, sufficient to derive a high reliability cobalt GV using the protocols developed for the revision of the Guidelines (Batley et al, 2014; Warne et al, 2015). In the spectrum of mining-related disciplines, geometallurgy sits between resource geology and metallurgical engineering. Unlike its neighbours, it is a relatively young discipline and its concepts, procedures and techniques are still evolving. Relevant geometallurgical issues differ from one deposit to the next so there is no single template that can be used in all situations, meaning that geometallurgy programs are nearly always customised and tailored to the deposit and the situation.Over time, a number of key mistakes are seen to emerge regularly. The eventual impact of these mistakes can vary from suboptimal performance of mine and plant to complete failure of the operation. For instance, poor characterisation of ore lithologies and their spatial distribution can have negative impacts on processing plant throughput. However, when combined with failure to identify critical blending constraints it can result in a totally inoperable plant.A number of common mistakes committed during geometallurgical programs are discussed and some preferred alternative approaches are suggested

The Athena gold deposit was discovered in 2007 by Gold Fields Australia Ltd, at the St Ives Gold Mine, 35 km southeast of Kambalda, Western Australia. Gold anomalism was identified in sheared Paringa Basalt as a result of a regional scale aircore drilling program, in association with geophysics. In the 18 months following discovery, the deposit was intensely drilled and by June 2009, it was announced that the Athena deposit contained an ore reserve of 1.7 Mt @ 5.6 g/t for 316 koz. This was followed by a feasibility study, and as a result mine development commenced in November 2009.The Athena mineralisation is hosted in a discrete, north-south striking, steep to moderately dipping shear zone within the southwest dipping Paringa Basalt. Vein intensity has a strong correlation to grade and vein type varies from early thin quartz-albite-sulfide (pyrite and/or pyrrhotite) shear parallel veins to strong brecciation and irregular veining with quartz-albite-actinolite-biotite-pyrrhotite infill. The geology preproduction process developed at the Argo mine was refined and improved following a business improvement project. The aim of the process is to construct detailed geological interpretations prior to development allowing informed mining decisions to be made. The process delivers significant cost savings and revenue enhancements.The development of macroscopic classification scheme was critical to determine ore or waste in the early phases of mining. The Style of Deformation, Alteration and Veining (SAV) Code was the result, and has been enhanced as greater geological knowledge is gained over time.

To finalise the arrangement and details of the headframe to be erected over the new No. 3 Shaft, the haulage and winding equipment requirements were first determined, then tentative designs were prepared to cover the needs of general shaft servicing work for men and materials, mullock and ore handling, and the probable requirements of a breaker station to be built adjacent to the headframe, which would provide for the crushing of the run-of-mine ore down to a size which would be suitable for feeding on to the concentrating mill.

"An Outotec e500 TankCell, with 500 m³ of actual flotation volume, was commissioned at the Kevitsa Cu-Ni-PGE concentrator in northern Finland during 2014. This flotation cell was implemented at the head of the existing copper circuit as the first Cu rougher flotation cell. This was the first flotation cell of this size to be run under production conditions by any supplier anywhere in the world.The cell has been in continuous operation since start-up in October 2014 and has provided improvements in metallurgical performance at very low specific power consumption. On average, the cell has recovered 71 per cent of copper contained in the 0.37 per cent Cu flotation feed at a concentrate grade of 17 per cent Cu. The specific power consumption for the cell (excluding blower power) is typically around 0.4 kW/m³.After start-up, the impeller speed and superficial gas velocity were varied and the impact on metallurgical performance measured. In this paper a review of the cell operation at Kevitsa is given. The use of photogrammetry has greatly increased the accuracy of 3D mapping underground. However, this has not reduced the need or desire for geologists to produce plans and sections showing an interpretation of the mapped geology. At the Waihi Underground Gold Mine, a hybrid solution has been developed that utilises the accuracy of photogrammetry and mapping onto face photos with the CAD-based Deswik.MappingTM functions to create plan and section maps. These have the benefit of looking like traditional paper maps but are more spatially accurate and richly attributed with metadata that can be filtered and exported to downstream processes. Deswik.MappingTM is a tablet-based solution that allows the geologist to map digitally with a stylus. Automation is utilised for the updating of survey as-builts, approved designs, drill holes, geological mapping, vein interpretations and mine work areas, reducing the requirement to print out maps at various locations and scales. Having 3D mine software on a tablet device provides a wealth of features not available when using paper: scaling is a problem of the past; information can be turned on and off; features can be viewed in 3D; and measurements between points of interest can be calculated in 3D space, for example, between vein wireframes and drill hole sample information. A suite of custom scripts has been developed that take the spatially accurate, registered and attributed polyline data from photogrammetry scans and converts them to a geological mapping legend with vein textures, structural information, and lithological boundaries. These 3D maps can be plotted in plan or section view and satisfy the requirements of the most ardent paper map supporter.

"Hanwha Mining Services was approached by Glencore Coal to provide a series of (trial) demonstration blasts at its Clermont coalmine. The intent of the project was to trial a bulk explosive product that would be able to provide sufficient energy for the ground type encountered without production of post-blast fume. Three blasts were loaded using the patented XLOAD bulk explosives with a density of 1.00 g/cc. XLOAD bulk products are water resistant explosives that can be loaded at densities much lower than traditional (generic) water resistant heavy ammonium nitrate – fuel oil (ANFO) or pumped blends with significantly reduced risk of fume. In addition, these products have detonation characteristics that generally deliver a higher heave partition than conventional bulk products and hence improve muck pile looseness and digability.The priority key performance measures included the absence of fume from blasting, being at least cost neutral and providing similar if not improved shovel dig rates. The design for the initial blast took a conservative approach to ensure the key blast outcomes of fume control and fragmentation were achieved.The second blast used the same pattern dimensions as the benchmark bulk product used in this area to provide a cost neutral comparison with the benchmark products that had been used over the prior six months. This resulted in a 20 per cent lower powder factor than would have otherwise been used. To test the suitability of XLOAD, this shot was slept for over two weeks between loading and firing in geology where the sleep time is typically kept to a few days to minimise the fume risk.The third blast utilised a slightly larger drill pattern to push the capabilities of XLOAD and provide a cost neutral comparison between the trial product and the traditional benchmark products. All three blasts were fired with no fume observed, no recordable incidents and good fragmentation. Shovel productivity from all three of the trial blasts was excellent with higher average instantaneous dig rates being recorded (average six per cent improvement against the instantaneous dig rates recorded for the benchmark blasts).Citation:Rock, J and Bambrook, K, 2016. Improving the safety culture and performance of any operation is a fundamental goal of every mine operator. Methods of implementing, or changing a culture have developed from the early methods of operant conditioning, for example rewarding crews for achieving nominated safety milestones i.e. 3 months Lost Time Injury (LTI) free through to the current model of engaging a workforce through education and empowerment. As a large scale and mature operation with multiple contractors, Telfer has been exposed to numerous programs throughout its history. This has provided the opportunity to build on and complement these systems by integrating key elements from each. SAFE 360° is a new approach developed to engage the workforce in a holistic approach to encourage positive behaviours across all facets of an individual’s life which results in a focus on situational awareness at all times, rather than being workplace specific. It is based on three key modules: • Emotional Intelligence • Mindfulness • Situational Awareness Each module has a series of modules that help enhance the individual’s sense of self, leading to an ability to self-reflect and self-manage whilst empowering them with the moral courage to challenge their peers to raise standards. Since commencing this SAFE 360° behavioural safety risk management journey in November 2017, we have witnessed a change in the way our workforce engages with each other, their workplace and with management. There has been an increase in hazard perception, identification and ownership of issues, and we have seen a significant decrease in site TRIFR rate from 13.7 to 5.7 (as of April 2019). This paper will provide an overview of the program, how it has been implemented, case studies to demonstrate outcomes and KPIs used to measure effectiveness.

The Newcrest Mining Limited Telfer Gold Mine consists of an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation located 734 m directly below active open pit operations. Open pit and underground current production rates are 50 million and 5.7 million tonnes per anum (Mt/a) respectively. The SLC was initiated in late 2006 with breakthrough planned to occur on the 5484 bench of the west wall in late 2009. Risk to the south ramp was identified during this time, resulting in the construction of the north ramp. The SLC was continually tracked from initiation with a suite of monitoring systems and managed with a Major Hazard Management Plan (MHMP) and associated Trigger Action and Response Plans (TARP). At breakthrough the eastern limb of the cave was located within a 70 m horizontal distance from the south ramp. The south ramp was closed in October 2009 due to significant slope deformation, extensive cracking in the berms and batters between the ramp and breakthrough bench and a major failure 250 m to the north of the cave breakthrough. Wall response was first identified from slope deformation measurements taken by the wall monitoring radar in May 2009, at which point the SLC was 160 m from breakthrough. The impact of the SLC on the slope is a unique case with the monitoring systems in place able to provide data on the slope reaction to the SLC progression. This paper will discuss the management of the south ramp such as the early interpretation of risk associated with cave breakthrough, monitoring systems implemented to track the cave progression and wall deformation, data integration and interpretation and risk management. Following the closure of the south ramp further instrumentation programs and risk assessments were conducted to determine the risk of re-opening this haulage route. The outcomes of this program will also be presented.

It has been worked since 1884-first for, silver, then for silver and lead, and at present for lead, silver, and zinc. No excuse seems necessary for placing before members even an imperfect report on the geological features of this notable ore deposit, since so little work has been done on the subject as to constitute almost a national reproach. This is the more deplorablesince the evidence laid open by mining operations is destroyed almost as soon as it is exposed, and there exists the real need of a continuous and connected record of geologieal developments.

Commercial or potentially commercial deposits of coal occur in Australia in strata ranging in age from Permian to Tertiary. The coals of each period tend to show a community of petrographic character and significant differences as compared with coals of other ages. In particular- many of the Permian coals are unusually rich in inertinite whereas the Jurassic and Tertiary coals are typically very rich in vitrinite. The majority of the coals show evidence of deposition in environments subject to relatively minor marine influence. Except for some Tertiary and Permian coals the content of mineral matter tends to be high. Outcrops of coals of bituminous rank appear to be largely restricted to the eastern margin of the Australian continent. In this region vertical rank gradients are generally higher than in the other sedimentary basins and uplift and the removal of cover has occurred to a greater extent. To the west of the Tasman geosyncline, coal of bituminous rank generally occurs at considerable depths (usually in excess of 1 km and in some areas only at depths of over 2 kms), and in most areas coals at shallow depth are of sub-bituminous or brown coal rank. The controls of the distribution of coal type and rank have considerable economic significance and the unusual characteristics of Australian coals, especially with respect to coal type, make the direct application of overseas technology to Australian coals inappropriate.

The Yara Siilinjärvi plant is located in the central part of Finland. Siilinjärvi is Western Europe's only apatite mine and annually it produces 1 Mt of apatite concentrate, which creates approximately 10 Mt of tailings.At the beginning of 2017, tailings handling in Yara Siilinjärvi was brought to a new era, by replacing the conventional tailings storage facility with a new tailings treatment plant. The new high-density tailings disposal system with two paste thickeners increased the percentage of solids in the slurry from 45–48 per cent to 66-68 per cent, making it possible to deposit as a paste. This extended the life-span of the current tailings storage facility by 15 years; from 2020 to 2035.This paper presents the storyline of the Yara Paste Plant Project. The project began with laboratory testing and then progressed to pilot-scale thickening and beaching trials. After some successful pilot trials, the final process design was implemented. Process instrumentation and automation played a key role in the project, as the aim of the Yara Project was to make the plant operable remotely from the main plant. An advanced control system is needed to maintain process stability and the desired operation point in various operational circumstances.This paper discusses the results from the Yara site since the new tailings treatment plant commenced. Some of the main points are that the operation has been running consistently with an underflow solids content of 66-68 per cent, with average beach slope angles of 3.5 degrees in the tailings disposal area. This control system additionally facilitates minimum use of flocculant, which delivers significant savings to operating costs. Robust thickener operation also leads to the trouble-free high-density pumping and high availability of the Paste Plant. During the first year of operation, the plant’s availability has been very good, over 97 per cent.Currently, the plant still has its own staff working there during the daytime, but the Paste Plant is now already operated remotely during the night shifts. Cracow is a high-grade; low-tonnage underground gold mine located approximately 500 km north-west of Brisbane in Central Queensland. It is a steeply dipping, narrow vein, epithermal gold and silver deposit that is accessed via a decline from surface. Cracow is owned by joint venture between Newcrest Mining (70 per cent) and Sedimentary Holdings (30 per cent). The orebodies are 5 m wide on average and the ore is extracted via sublevel open bench stoping. Stopes are extracted to a strike of approximately 25 m before being backfilled with waste. Prior to the introduction of electronics, the mine would remove a small amount of the previous backfill out to create a void, and then begin blasting two to three rings at a time, with the ore being extracted between each blast. This method caused the ore to be blasted onto the waste backfill resulting in dilution of the high-grade ore. It also meant that the extraction of each stope took a number of weeks and numerous blasting events. In the fourth quarter of 2005, the mine struck a geotechnically sensitive stope, where all 20 rings had to be extracted in a single shot or risk possible geotechnical problems that could sterilise the ore. Due to the limitations of NONEL« delay detonators the mine could not fire all the rings in a single shot and needed to use an electronic detonator system to extract the stope. Some unexpected benefits to the mine were increased fragmentation, reduced vibrations, reduced dilution, improved efficiency and improved hanging wall and footwall conditions. After the success of this first electronic shot, the mine has since moved to firing all their stopes with electronic detonators. With electronics the mine has been able to fire much larger blasts, and has in fact moved to firing their blasts in the opposite direction, firing towards the draw point instead of into the waste backfill, thus reducing ore dilution.

RME has a vision for a new grinding plant operational paradigm made possible by RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System. Some new liner designs can degrade SAG mill performance because of mill volume loss, ball strike (rotational speed limitations) and other issues often brought about by modifying liner design for maximum life and without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences. Freshly relined mills can initially produce as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the linersÆ wear life. RMEÆs proposition is to see new liners designed for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent mill relines but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance, not maximum life. In other words, mill liner profiles and mill relining speed become key operational controls and not simply æmust doÆ maintenance functions. Taken to the extreme, liner profiles may prove capable of ætuningÆ a grinding plant for maximum profitability in any metal price environment. Following the introduction, the first section of this paper provides an update describing recent and significant developments within RMEÆs range of Mill Relining Systems, the enabling technologies which permit more frequent liner exchange without incurring additional downtime imposts. The second section outlines RMEÆs vision of a æliner profile versus profitabilityÆ commercial model, developed either intuitively or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum commercial outcome, off-line in the virtual world, before committing to an expensive liner experiment.
