There are a number of mineral processing operations which produce at some point a stream of hot particulates. At today's energy prices it becomes important to recover the energy held in the hot particulates. Sometimes it is convenient to use gas, e.g. in air pre- heating, and this will be appropriate in some circumstances. There are cases where it would be very useful if energy in the hot processed particles could be exchanged to the cold feed solids. This can be achieved within appropriate limitations by countercurrent heat exchangers comprised of parallel channels which contain, alternately, fluidized solids of 'hot' and 'cold' streams respectively. A pilot- plant has been built. Some calculations relating to industrial application will be Presented.

The underground mining industry is seeing unprecedented shortages in skilled labour. Migration to Australia being at an all-time low is a leading concern, with pandemic-induced border closures and lockdowns only exacerbating the skills shortage, not causing it. The skills shortage is forecast to peak in 2023 and remain high beyond 2025. With this skills shortage in mind, mining companies throughout Australia are trying to deal with stricter protocols around Health and Safety (H&S) legislation, as well as more stringent controls on quality assurance, particularly as underground mines are reaching greater depths and extending into ‘unchartered territory’. The cumulation of this is proving to be a major hurdle in ‘effective’ operational geotechnical management. The drive for automation in mining is bringing another level of complexity. However, ‘once automation is up and running, it presents the opportunity to access talent pools that may not normally be available. There is also a change in skillset that will be required to drive automation. ‘The top two emerging roles that will be critical for the future of the mining industry are artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) specialists, and process-automation specialists’ (Writer, 2021). If anything positive has come from the pandemic, it has shown that remote working can be effective and that the drive for automation and critical evaluation of skills required on-site should be given greater priority. UQ acknowledges that the industry is changing, and that digital technology is required to be offered in mining related disciplines. Industry and academia need to do more to promote geotechnical engineering in mining and balance the curriculum to suit the future of mining and make it more enticing. The average cost of a geotechnical failure is about $5 million in coalmines and can be into the hundreds of millions of dollars if production is affected (Cartledge Mining and Geotechnics, 2020). The cost of a good geotechnical design far outweighs the potential losses if a failure were to occur. This alludes to the growing importance of experienced geotechnical consultancies playing a pivotal role in managing mine site geotechnical hazards, while the industry is developing the next generation of geotechnical engineers.

Cave mining is of interest to the mining community as it offers a chance to extract large, deep orebodies with low operating costs and high production rates. It allows for extracting large low-grade orebodies, which may not have previously been considered for mining. Cave mining is done either top down (ie sublevel caving) or bottom up (ie block/panel caving). Both approaches rely on gravity, stresses and weakness of the rock to fracture and achieve a controlled collapse.Block caving starts at the base of the orebody. It progresses upward and across through continuous collapse of the roof. To achieve this, a critical hydraulic radius must be exceeded. This is accomplished by blasting drawbells, through which the caved ore passes to the production level. An entire level above the drawbells (undercut level) is excavated to help initiate the cave. The undercut level ensures the connection between drawbells and achievement of the required hydraulic radius.Conventionally, drawbells are generated by drilling and blasting several times from the production level as well as the undercut level. Mucking between each shot is required to generate enough void space for the rock to swell. The need for several blasts necessitates some downtime between each blast. Also, the cost of developing and maintaining the undercut level can constitute up to 35 per cent of the cost of mining the panel.A new blasting technique was developed to create the drawbells in a single blast from the production level. The technique ensures the connection of the drawbell to the neighbouring ones, thus, the critical hydraulic radius is reached and propagation of the cave achieved without the need for the undercut level. The technique has the potential to reduce the capital cost of a block caving operation, increase its feasibility and reduce time to reach the ore and consequently the payback period. Traditionally occupational health and safety (OH&S) has been managed for the direct benefits of reducing injury and illness to workers on mine sites. In the current skill shortage climate it is important to recognise the value that OH&S management can have in assisting mines in minimising their exposure to this issue. In times of skills shortage turnover is high as mines poach personnel from each other. This leads to loss of corporate knowledge and loss in productivity through the need to train new personnel in mine-specific operating procedures. In addition absenteeism can significantly disrupt production as there may be no ready replacements available for key jobs. Pressure will be placed upon workers to remain at work even though they are not completely fit for work, leading to presenteeism and consequently loss in productivity. In addition to the threats to routine operation, the loss of management and professional staff can significantly increase catastrophic risk through loss of experience and corporate knowledge. There is increased pressure to focus on events that occur regularly in the here and the now and underestimate the rare, or unlikely, events.The theme of this paper is that by properly addressing OH&S management at mine sites, companies can minimise their exposure to these problems. Current best management practice requires the placement of a cover onto most types of mine waste including tailings, waste rock and/or spent heap leach rock at closure of the mine. The objectives of a cover system may vary from site to site but generally include dust and erosion control; chemical stabilisation of acid-forming mine waste (through control of oxygen ingress) contaminant release control (through control of infiltration); and/or provision of a growth medium for establishment of sustainable vegetation. In our experience, there has been a general tendency by stakeholders to develop performance criteria for cover systems, which are tied directly to these specific design objectives. In many cases, this practice has led to the development of single, often very conservative, numerical values of cover performance criteria such as ænet percolationÆ, ærate of oxygen ingressÆ and/or æplant density/mixtureÆ. In our opinion, there is a need to develop cover performance criteria on a case-by-case basis and with due consideration of the short-term and long-term impacts on the receiving environment at a particular site. This paper puts forward a methodology for developing site-specific performance criteria for a cover system designed to isolate acid-forming mine waste and to control acid rock drainage. The proposed methodology links the predicted performance of a cover system to groundwater and surface water impacts. This way, the appropriate level of control (of oxygen ingress and/or net percolation) required by the cover system can be determined. A case study is presented that illustrates the application of the methodology proposed in this paper.

Extracting alumina from bauxite involves the production of fine-grained waste known as red mud. The highly alkaline red mud is usually neutralised by applying sea water, thickened to between 25% and 30% solids by mass, before disposal to a Tailing Storage Facility (TSF). Hydraulic sorting, settling, self-weight consolidation, and desiccation are the processes contributing to the overall volume change of the red mud after deposition. Investigating the effect of these processes on the volume change behaviour of the fine-grained red mud is an important step in the estimation of the required storage volume of the storage facilities. This paper demonstrates an application of a recently developed Risk-Cost-Benefit (RCB) Framework to environmental risk management in the mining industry. The environmental application of the RCB Framework as part of an ACARP project (Kizil, Bye and Joy, 2012) involved a thorough selection process with site visits and in-depth discussions with the case study siteÆs environmental management team. Under their guidance, the highest risk of environmental impact at the case study site was identified as æroad subsidenceÆ at the time when the project work was undertaken. This paper presents the unique application of the RCB Framework to examine the risk of mining-induced subsidence and its impact on one of AustraliaÆs busiest highways, with a traffic volume of 38 000 vehicles per day (NSW RTA AADT, 2008). The RCB Framework was employed to assess the optimum group of controls for road subsidence risk management to ensure highway availability while mining occurs. Whilst this paper focuses on road subsidence, the methodology employed can be directly applied to other environmental concerns including preparation for mine closure, rehabilitation planning and waste management. The RCB Framework incorporates mathematical modules which were developed to enable complex yet tightly integrated RCB calculations. The process integrates the risk-control effectiveness assessment to determine that the selected safety initiative is financially beneficial to the mine site and company. This concept has been applied to a number of high-risk mining areas targeting safety, productivity and environmental issues. This paper introduces the five-staged RCB Framework, incorporating the RCB tools RCBGEN (Risk-Cost-Benefit Generator) and RCEMETHOD (Risk-Control-Effectiveness Method), and demonstrates its practical application to the risk management of a road subsidence case study. The case study looks at potential pavement damages, in particular, the occurrence of pavement stepping on the surface of the highway as a result of vertical subsidence. This type of road damage was previously experienced at another major inter-city route while underground mining occurred in the region where the case study site is located. The RCB Framework has been successfully applied to the analysis of the road subsidence case study and determined the risk reduction and financial benefits of implementing a range of risk-controls. User-friendly RCB Charts to provide an aid for decision-making were produced. The value of using the RCB charts to achieve balance between risk, cost and productivity in the decision-making process for risk management has been explained. The case study determined that pavement slots and fibre-optic cable monitoring were relatively low-cost and effective controls applied in the mining industry for the first time at a global level.This paper supports the industryÆs ongoing efforts to manage risk to ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable) and achieve æzero harmÆ by providing a new Framework to more effectively establish the adequacy of controls.CITATION:Kizil, G V, Bye, A and Joy, J, 2012. Ore sorting has the potential to reduce the feed to wet plants and in the case of complex orebodies that can significantly reduce the water, energy and reagent consumptions and resulting operating costs for the project. The application of ore sorters has sparked renewed interest and application in the precious and base metals mining industry in recent years as a result of the continuing development of new sensing technology and very fast information processing that is making ore sorters applicable to a much wider range of ores and larger scale operations. The application of ore sorters involves a range of trade-off decisions that have economic impact upon the benefits of ores sorting to the project under consideration. Central Norseman Gold Corporation was established in 1935 and has been mining on the Norseman field in Western Australia since then. It is Australia’s longest continuously operating gold mining operation at nearly 80 years, although it has had its periodic challenges in the intervening years.Over the last 40 years, a series of open pit mines around the Dundas Goldfield have supplied lower cost mill feed to the Phoenix Mill at Norseman from time to time but this has largely come to an end for the foreseeable future. Now that underground ore sources are once again the principal mill feed, there are several challenges to be met for an ongoing profitable operation.During the last 20 years, there have been three different owners and this has affected the manner in which the operations were managed quite significantly. These differing approaches are contrasted and examined in some detail from both the operational and financial aspects.Planning of a downsized operation to ensure sustainable profitability in the future in a mining environment where there has rarely been more than two to four years of reserves ahead of the mill for planning purposes has been a significant challenge. IN this paper an attempt is made to describe the sluicing operations on the tin fields of north-eastern Tasmania. No claim is made to completeness, for much of the ground has already been covered, and nothing is to be gained by needless repetition. On this account some portions of the subject have obviously received but scanty attention in order that others may be rather more fully dealt with; for instance, figures referring to the accuracy of various methods of valuing alluvial deposits, particulars of efficiencies, and water duties on both overburden and drift; also, the system of recording water distribution, &c.The plans of the tin-streaming shed, sluice and feed·race, and overburden tail-race represent types of the most modern design.The principal alluvial deposits being worked at the present time are situated either in the ancient or modern bed of the Ringarooma river or its tributaries. The performances of ten field-scale experimental final covers were evaluated over an eight-year period. The covers were evaluated as part of the rehabilitation of acid generating coarse coal reject dumps and opencast coalmines in the Northern KwaZulu Natal province in South Africa. The main purpose of the experimental covers was to restrict rainfall infiltration into acid generating coal discard. The mean average rainfall over the monitoring period was 839 mm with 84 per cent occurring between October and April. The average evaporation was 2100 mm. The site is described as a ædry siteÆ since the evaporation exceeds rainfall by a significant margin. Approximately 30 per cent of rainfall infiltrated the uncovered cells. Rainfall infiltration into the fine coal discard was reduced to 20 per cent and 15 per cent for a 300 mm and 500 mm cover respectively. Infiltration was reduced to ten and 12 per cent of rainfall for fine coal discard provided with a 1000 mm double soil cover and a compacted bottom layer. This relatively high infiltration was probably caused by moisture being entrapped in the bottom retentive layer, and not being released by evapotranspiration. The best performing cover comprised 1000 mm single soil with a compacted bottom layer and infiltration was reduced to four per cent of rainfall. Rainfall infiltration into sloped cells varied between seven per cent and 14 per cent of rainfall. The computer software, SoilCover, was used to predict infiltration and moisture content in the cover. Predictions of rainfall infiltration were accurate, but were less accurate for covers where the hydraulic properties of field compacted soils were not adequately characterised. Oxygen ingress was significantly reduced for cells provided with a 1000 mm cover. Oxygen concentrations were generally below one per cent, with the exception during exceptionally dry periods when the cover dried out, resulting in increased oxygen ingress. For other covers, and the uncovered cells, oxygen concentrations were close to atmospheric concentrations. During the eight-year monitoring period, acid breakthrough occurred in five of the cells, including three uncovered cells, one cell with a 300 mm cover and one sloped cell. In contrast, cells covered with 1000 mm, bottom compacted soils shows a marked improvement of leachate quality, indicating that sulfide oxidation processes have been slowed. There was a distinct relationship between oxygen ingress and leachate quality for all of the cells. No cover degradation was evident over the eight-year period, except for some erosion observed on a sloped cell. The results indicate that the onset of acid drainage can be delayed by perhaps hundreds of years and salinity loads can be reduced by more than 90 per cent, if coarse coal reject dumps in the KwaZulu-Natal provinces in South Africa are provided by an adequate cover system. These research outcomes can be extrapolated and applied to other dry site regions where similar materials are being considered.

Resource characterisation is critical for informed decisions in both strategic and operational space. The sources of information for resource characterisation are limited by: direct measurement of resource attributes, such as grades, rock-types, mineralogy, and are available only from sparse locations, ie drill holes; or indirect geophysical measurements such as seismic, gravity or electro[1]magnetic survey. Data collection tools, methods, and processing technologies are constantly improving providing a broad spectrum of options for data collection strategies. The cost of each data survey varies from thousands to millions of dollars with the value of each additional data having diminishing return for a particular business decision. The value of information analysis provides the optimal decision on data collection strategy within a limited available budget. This work presents an example of value of information analysis for new Blast Hole Assay Tool (BHAT) and Reverse Circulation Grade Control (RCGC) data used in addition to the wider spaced exploration data. The value of information is quantified in terms of reduction of grade uncertainty, ore loss and dilution by comparing different combinations of data collection methods. Four different strategies were considered: exploration samples in addition to 50 per cent of blastholes surveyed with BHAT, exploration samples in addition to 33 per cent of blastholes surveyed with BHAT, exploration with wide-spaced RCGC data, and exploration without additional grade control. For each strategy the observed values have been simulated using advanced multivariate geostatistical simulations and compared with simulated ground truth models. The calculated uncertainty, ore loss and dilution informed the optimal data collection strategy. Opportunity to reduce sample density from the nominal 50 per cent of drill holes was evaluated.

Traditional method of explicitly defining three-dimensional (3D) ore-waste and geological boundaries relies heavily on a time-consuming process of manual digitisation. This method of modelling can be best described as surface modelling, as complex surface geometry is built up by digitising points that lie on the surface. With the advent of fast 3D interpolation methods, however, construction of geological surfaces using volume functions is now a practical alternative to explicit modelling of surfaces. Unlike explicit modelling, surfaces contained in volume functions are not explicitly defined or digitised. Instead the existence of surfaces in the volume function is implicit, thus the process of modelling surfaces from volume function is called æimplicit modellingÆ. Based on recent advances in fast scattered data interpolation methods, implicit modelling first defines a continuous three-dimensional function that describes the grade or rock distribution. This volumetric function is interrogated for a grade value, or a geological surface, thus allowing the extraction of the 3D object to be automated and eliminating the need to manually digitise surfaces. Since the function is continuous throughout space and does not depend on a mesh or grid for its definition, the extracted geological or grade wireframes can be constructed at any desired resolution in the specific volume of interest. The volume modelling method can work on scattered drillhole data of any data density, including processing combined information from dense grade control data as well as sparse resource drilling. It offers distinct advantages over surface modelling, including: being able to wireframe geological objects that may take days to digitise in tens of minutes; substantial improvement in modelling accuracy; and the ability to generate conditional models rapidly allowing mining risks inherent in geological modelling to be examined.

The Selwyn gold-copper operation is wholly owned and operated by the Arimco mining group. The mine is located 150 kilometres south-east of Mount Isa. The primary extraction method for the gold-copper 251 orebody is by sub level open stoping. Secondary extraction is from the mass blasting of the remaining crown and rib pillars. The final mass blast of the 251 orebody occurred in December 1993. This paper details the design and execution of that firing.

The extraction and transport of coal from underground coal mines can result in significant liberation of coal and/or silica dust into the mine atmosphere. Mine operators have long used ventilating air as a primary means of diluting generated dust, removing dust from the working faces and preventing dust from reaching the minersÆ working environment. As production levels have increased, mine operators continue to be challenged in maintaining dust concentrations below compliance levels. The need for maximising the effectiveness of available ventilating air in conjunction with other effective controls, such as water sprays and dust collectors, continues to be critical to the long-term health of mine workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted full-scale laboratory and mine-site research to evaluate improved application of dust controls for both longwall and continuous mining methods. A summary of recent research results and recommended practices will be provided.

A sampling and measurement program was undertaken on the reaction shaft of the Olympic Dam copper flash smelting furnace. The object of the work was to provide information to validate a mathematical model of the burner and reaction shaft. Samples and measurements were undertaken through the burner inspection ports and the South East (SE) shaft sampling port about half way down the reaction shaft. Samples were collected to enable the calculation of particle loading of shaft gases, or sizing and chemical analysis of the partly-combusted feed, and the preparation of polished sections. Measurements were made of the temperature and sulfur dioxide content of the atmosphere, as well as plume velocity.To implement the program it was necessary to design and construct the following specialised items of equipment. For use at the burner inspection ports: a cup sampler for obtaining samples below the burners (temperature, solids loading and samples for characterisation).For use at the SE shaft sampling port and also at the settler level: trough sampler (plume definition and samples), isokinetic sampler (used as a velocity probe in this work), temperature probe (temperature traverses across the shaft), and sulfur dioxide probe (SO2 measurements across the shaft).The design of the sampling and measuring equipment is described, and examples are cited of the types of information obtained. The problems arising from working in a hot environment with molten or sticky particles are discussed.

Due to the harsh operating conditions, wearing of the inner refractory lining in a Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) furnace reduces the useful life of the refractories and incurs a significant cost component for relining. In this study, firstly, a combined compressible and incompressible computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to identify the potential wear prone zones in an industrial scale BOS system during the supersonic oxygen blowing phase by quantifying the wall shear stress distributions. Next, the retained slag splashing process was simulated by introducing an inert gas to residual slag mass to achieve a protective coating on the refractory walls. Effect of both design and operational parameters such as lance head configuration, lance position and the initial slag volume on the slag wall coating performance were quantified and most favourable conditions were determined.

As part of a comprehensive project to develop a remote sensing tool for evaluating the mechanical properties of rocks, one must obtain a rapid indication of these properties using conventional field methods. A common method for evaluating the mechanical properties of rocks in the field is to use a Schmidt hammer, a portable device that measures the rebound (R) of a spring-loaded mass impacting against the rock surface. Since the 1960s many studies have been made to find empirical correlations between the R value measured by the Schmidt hammer and mechanical and physical properties such as uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), elastic modulus, density, and porosity. Despite the existing correlations in the literature, this work is required to establish detailed empirical relationships for the carbonate rock units in Israel. To do so, 150 rock samples were collected from 38 different outcrops of carbonate rock units. In each outcrop, 20 impacts were made using a Schmidt hammer at different but adjacent points. The impacts were done horizontally perpendicular to the vertical rock walls. In the laboratory, we measured the density, effective porosity, water absorption, UCS, and elastic modulus. The rock samples we selected contained a wide range of UCS: from 7 to 270 MPa. Our empirical correlations indicate an exponential relationship between R and UCS and the elastic modulus, and linear relationships between R and density, porosity, and water absorbance. The most reliable index is the average of the five maximum impacts out of the 20 made in each rock outcrop. The correlation equations obtained from this work will make it possible to effectively evaluate the mechanical properties of the intact rock in the field, thereby aiding development of advanced tools for rock mass characterisation by means of remote sensing.

From December 2013 to February 2014 the Southern Middleback Ranges magnetite concentrator went through a successful optimisation process that included the installation of extra grinding power to treat a wider range of ore types. After the initial improvements, sampling surveys were conducted to identify the mineral deportment through the concentrator. Samples collected during the survey were analysed using X-ray fluorescence, quantitative X-ray diffraction and QEMSCAN™ to cross-validate the analysis. Certain streams were also put through a laboratory-scale Davis Tube Recovery washing process to produce clean concentrates for analysis. The QEMSCAN™ analysis identified various metallurgical characteristics (mineral association, particle sizes, grain sizes, particle densities, etc) and these were evaluated for each separation and comminution stage to both understand the processes involved and identify opportunities for improvement. Key findings from the investigation indicated the importance of understanding the elemental deportment of target elements throughout the various minerals. The standard practice of tracking iron deportment through assay provided misleading results on losses to tail through the plant. The investigation provided insight into both wanted and unwanted minerals and the efficiency of each separation stage. The efficiencies of separation are critical due to their impact on downstream capacity, and the investigation provided insight into where opportunities exist to extract more benefit.
