Project delivery in our current market is not as efficient as it could be. Industry at large (both client and consultant), is diligently following the engineer, procure, construct, manage (EPCM) or engineer, procure, construct (EPC) delivery models and not necessarily appreciating the underlying principles that make them the effective tools they were to start with. We often misinterpret project management with EPCM and end up with a literal and superficial interpretation instead of the disciplined risk reduction and business value capture exercise it is intended to be. One of these underlying principles is the project team as resource or commodity depending on which perspective we follow. Some of us understand this principle only too well and succumb to the temptation to take advantage of the imbalance in the understanding of EPCM by selling bodies and hours. Value and return on investment do not always come into the equation. The latecomers and aspirants are struggling with this as a barrier of entry into this lucrative market, since as we all know - people as commodity was becoming and still is a scarce resource. Clients are also waking up and asking why 1000 engineers on the floor are better than 100, when engineering design in all aspects of industry, new technology aside, is mature. Why is it that we start with a clean sheet of paper with every project or that neighbours in the same industry segment and location just happen to have completely unique conditions and circumstances that require totally original design (Local conditions aside)? The answers to this question appear when we explore the role of the project team and how it is structured. We will need to investigate team culture and levers for success. Then we will formulate a business case for a team to be able to follow traditional project management practices with EPCM delivery models but yet end up with an alternative look, feel and result. An outcome where more input is not necessarily better and the client and consultant both are aligned with success measured in dollars and a win-win outcome for both parties.

The results of a detailed acid rock drainage (ARD) prediction program were used to revise the waste rock segregation criteria at the Restigouche open pit mine. Waste rock at the site was predominately derived from altered volcanic rocks that hosted a massive sulfide lead/zinc orebody. The program assessed the five years of drainage chemistry from both the potentially acid generating and the non-acid generating waste rock storage facilities in addition to laboratory-based kinetic test results. Material-specific leaching characteristics including relative metal-release rates and neutralisation potential depletion rates were determined from 12 laboratory-based kinetic tests. Solid-phase analyses indicated that, although pyrite was typically the most abundant sulfide mineral in the waste rock, its abundance varied significantly as documented by total sulfur contents ranging from 4.0 per cent. Kinetic test results were used to establish revised waste rock segregation criteria based on total sulfur content and neutralisation potential. The revised criteria maintain that waste material with a total sulfur content 4.0 per cent as potentially acid generating. When present in sufficient quantities, ankerite provided an effective source of neutralisation potential for the range of observed sulfide oxidation rates. Kinetic testing documented that up to 6 kg CaCO3/t was ineffective at neutralising acidity in samples that contained >4 per cent S. The carbonate molar ratio measured from the humidity cells was adjusted to reflect the stoichiometry of the ankerite and applied as an NP/AP criteria for waste rock containing 0.1 <S per cent <4.0.

The control of phosphorus in steelmaking is one of the famous challenges of pyrometallurgy. It is well established that highly basic slags, the presence of FeO in the slag and lower temperatures (less than 1650°C) are favourable for phosphorous removal. The thermodynamics of this reaction have been extensively studied under laboratory conditions and the general trends confirmed through industrial trials. However, in general, phosphorus slag/metal distributions measured in industry are far from equilibrium and quite specific to the oxygen steelmaking technology being used. This variability was quantified by Urban, Weinberg and Cappel (2015), who found that the phosphorus partition ratio measured in plants varied with blowing practice, stirring intensity and even converter life. Some recent kinetic studies by Gu, Dogan and Coley (2017) have shown how the kinetics of these reactions vary with FeO content and dissolved sulfur at the droplet scale. A global kinetic model by Rout et al (2018) provides meaningful predictions of where dephosphorisation occurs in an industrial basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and some recent heat transfer modelling by Madhavan et al (2021, 2022) implies that temperature difference between droplets and slag has a role to play in explaining why equilibrium is not achieved. This paper will review the current state of knowledge and provide suggestions on predicting phosphorous removal for industrial operations and how greater removal could be achieved.

The Ekati Diamond MineÖ is CanadaÆs first diamond mine and is located 300 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. The development of the mine supports sustainable development through the integration of environmental, economic and social considerations with the broad aim of minimising environmental impacts while maximising opportunities and benefits to northern residents and northern businesses. The environmental assessment and regulatory processes for the Ekati Diamond MineÖ were the most extensive seen in the NWT to that date; in Canada only uranium mines receive more attention. In addition to the regulatory requirements, an Environmental Agreement was negotiated with the Governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories to address environmental concerns not covered by existing legislation and regulation. Under the agreement an Independent Environmental Monitoring Agency was set up to oversee the regulatory process and implementation of the Environmental Agreement. Environmental stewardship is implemented through an Operational Environmental Management Plan, part of which includes effects monitoring programs for wildlife and aquatics where available traditional ecological and scientific knowledge are integrated to broaden our understanding of the tundra environment. A Socio-economic Agreement was concluded with the Government of the Northwest Territories to maximise employment and business benefits to the north. Voluntary and confidential Impact Benefits Agreements (IBAs) were also negotiated with four Aboriginal groups who use the area where the mine is located. The intention of the IBAs is to foster development initiatives and a partnership thereby helping to insure that benefits from the project flowed to the Aboriginal groups despite a lack of settled land claims in the region. All these were completed before commercial production in October 1998. Employment targets of 62 per cent residents of the Northwest Territories and 31 per cent Northern Aboriginal have consistently been met thereby ensuring benefits flow to residents of the Northwest Territories. In 2000, $316 million was spent to support operations at the Ekati Diamond MineÖ. Of this, 82.2 per cent of total spending and 26.6 per cent total northern spending was northern and northern Aboriginal businesses, respectively. The environmental and socio-economic monitoring results are reported annually to the responsible government agencies and potentially affected Aboriginal groups. To date, there have not been any significant adverse environmental effects documented and socio-economic targets have been met.

Fully grouted cable bolts have been used in underground mining industry for more than 40 years and are becoming more and more popular especially when severe geological conditions are encountered, such as high stresses and large cross-section excavations. The axial performance of cable bolts are mainly relied on the load transfer process between the cables themselves and surrounding rock masses via grout annulus. Therefore, the selected grouts play a significant role in determining the reinforcement quality for underground openings. In order to better understand the mechanical properties of Stratabinder HP grout, which is one type of cementitious grouts commonly used in Australian underground coalmines, plenty of unconfined compressive tests are conducted on it. Following diverse standards, two different kinds of samples are prepared and tested with the w/c ratio ranging from 0.35 to 0.45. During the test important mechanical properties including uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) values, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratios and so forth are recorded. Based on experimental results, the effect of w/c ratio on the mechanical properties of Stratabinder HP grout is studied. Beyond that, influences of sample size on the failure mode, peak strength as well as residual strength of this kind of grout are summarised and analysed.CITATION:Chen, J, Hagan, P C and Saydam, S, 2014. The level of salinity that various aquatic organisms can tolerate without incurring any adverse effects is dependent on several environmental and evolutionary factors. These factors include the relative concentrations of different types of dissolved salts in the water that makes up their habitat, the regimes to which organisms are exposed to waters of differing salinity levels (including naturally derived variations), the degree to which an organismÆs life history stages have adapted to salinity, an organismÆs ability or behaviour to avoid adverse levels of salinity and an organismÆs capacity for osmoregulation.Release of saline water into rivers of the Fitzroy catchment has created concern about the impact on aquatic organisms. Not only is salinity itself a stressor on organisms but different ionic compositions will moderate the effects. Ecotoxicology experiments were conducted using artificial saline water based on mine water chemistry using sensitive macroinvertebrates collected from the catchment, as well as a range of laboratory organisms in accordance with the ANZECC and ARMCANZ (2000) guidelines. The 95 per cent ecosystem protection value calculated from species sensitivity distribution derived from the commercial tests was estimated to be ~2.0 mS/cm. For the protection of 99 per cent of the species the salinity has to be reduced by more than 50 per cent to 0.91 mS/cm. The electrical conductivity (EC) values, derived by commercial testing and species sensitivity distribution in this study suggests that salinity contaminant trigger values previously developed using a referential approach for protection of aquatic ecosystems from saline mine water releases in the Fitzroy may be conservative.CITATION:Vink, S, Mann, R, Nanjappa, V and Prasad, R, 2013. Mill operating teams are expected to engage in a perpetual quest for process improvement – pushing the boundaries of practical process limits and testing new technology to achieve the next step-change in plant performance. Often the barrier to improvement lies in gaining management approval for process changes.Getting approval for investment in novel technology carries an added degree of difficulty, particularly in risk-averse operations, when it challenges conventional wisdom. A case in point is a new technology for controlling variability in slurry distribution. There is a widely held view that less-than-specified classification efficiency and spraying and roping of individual units in a hydrocyclone cluster, must be accepted as unavoidable. That these are wholly correctable deficiencies resulting from unequal loading of the individual units seems a bold claim. Wouldn’t the high turbulence of pumped slurries overcome all potential for segregation of solids? This paper discusses how the task of developing confidence in a new technology can be approached by a combination of physical modelling at small scale, and full-scale operating experience. Proving efficacy then leads to the next task: demonstrating value. Again, the particular technology serves as an example that could be of value to others developing relatively low-cost technologies. A high-pay-off as an investment may be achieved with improvements in metallurgical performance that are small in relation to normal process variations. When used in suitable ground conditions, rock bolts can have advantages over other permanent tunnel lining solutions. Permanent rock bolts offer flexibility in tunnelling profile and rapid rock bolt installation can enable time and cost savings. There are also disadvantages when considering the suitability of rock bolts for permanent support installations. These generally concern achieving the specified durability requirement over the specified design life. By investigating alternate approaches to rock bolt installation, quality assurance (QA), monitoring and design life it may be possible to alleviate some of these concerns.The design and construction benefits that can be realised through the use of rock bolts are primarily related to reducing project program time. This time reduction could be realised if rock bolts are considered as a permanent solution, with the installation being completed as a part of the primary excavation cycle. Any reduction of the program could allow direct and indirect cost savings and in the case of a major project, allow the revenue stream to be realised earlier.Currently ambiguity exists where the treatment of rock bolts as permanent support components is inconsistent with that of (often identical) ground anchors, as utilised in stabilising cut and cover structures. The ground support design process, implementation and testing are generally similar, though the acceptance of rock bolts as long-term support elements is treated differently to ground anchors in technical specifications.This paper discusses some of the benefits available through the use of rock bolts. It offers different solutions to the concerns surrounding durability, including alternate approaches to installation, Quality Assurance practices and monitoring solutions. The selection of an alternate design life is also investigated as another means of alleviating concerns around long-term durability. The paper will also provide an indication of savings that could be expected through the use of rock bolts as part of a long-term support system.

"Spring Creek Mine uses high pressure water to extract the thick Main seam in the Upper Rewanuicoal measures. The extraction method results in the creation of large voids which collapsespontaneously. This can result in the displacement of large volumes of methane, which may create a signifi cant hazard if not correctly managed. A system of automatic dilution doors is employed to mitigate this risk. This paper describes the evolution of the system and gives some examples of its eff ectiveness."

The minerals industry focus over much of the past twenty years has been on cost reduction and production growth supported, but not driven, by technology improvements. Mergers and acquisitions, and the demands of financial markets, have been high priority items whereas research and development and technology based innovation have received less attention and have been cut back in many companies. Technology improvements will be critical if the industry is to make progress on the stated aims of improving energy efficiency, reducing water usage and maximising recovery from deposits. They will also be important for improving capital efficiency and in treating difficult deposits. However the role technology based innovation will play both in the overall industry, and within individual companies, during the next decade is quite uncertain. There are major challenges in progressing technology based innovation in an industry with limited technical resources which is dominated by long life high capital operations. Specific opportunities for energy and productivity improvements exist but face significant technical and structural barriers that need to be overcome if the industry is to significantly improve performance. Current evidence suggests that changes in approach will be needed for these improvements to be realised. Recent studies in the United States and Canada have highlighted the wide range of energy performance across the industry and the scope for marked improvement from both incremental improvements and increased research and development. Comminution, material transportation and underground mine ventilation were identified as high priority areas. Opportunities within these areas are discussed both in respect of specific technologies and in how they may change performance. The role of open innovation as a source of new technology is also discussed. This is an abstract only. No full paper was prepared for this presentation.

A mine waste rock dump does not have any intrinsic value, yet is an inevitable structure in surface mining operations. Since the purpose of mining is to maximise profit, possible expenditure reduction in hauling waste rock to the dump, which can represent up to 50 per cent of the total operating cost, is highly desirable. Apart from cost, potential acid mine drainage (AMD), due to seepage from surface waste rock dumps containing reactive waste rock, could threaten the ecological balance, drinking water supplies and irrigation systems downstream from a mine site. In order to minimise these potential risks, selective placement of benign and reactive waste rock, and the encapsulation of reactive waste rock by benign waste rock, need to be carried out during the construction of the rock dump.In this paper, a new methodology, based on mixed integer programming (MIP) is developed to manage waste rock dumping. The model aims to minimise waste rock haulage costs by locating the optimum destination(s) for each waste rock block, while at the same time controlling the placement of reactive waste rock to minimise the potential for AMD. Tests on small-scale virtual data demonstrated that the model is capable of dealing with selective placement of different waste rock types, encapsulating reactive, potentially acid forming (PAF) waste rock, and stockpiling benign waste rock for encapsulation and rehabilitation purposes. Submerged arc welding (SAW) is one of the significant metal-joining processes for manufacturing marine vessels, steel pipes, and offshore structures with high deposition rate and engineering reliability. Welding flux serves several essential functions, including atmospheric shielding, arc stabilisation, bead morphology control and weld metal (WM) refinement. Therefore, from a thermodynamic point of view, the focus for flux design and WM compositional/microstructural modification has been placed to elucidating the transfer pathways and mechanisms of major alloying elements, such as Si, Mn, Ti and O during welding. To this end, a thermodynamic model has been established to predict alloying element contents in the WM. Such functions are enabled by the physicochemical properties of the fluxes, which are inherently rooted in the nature of the fluxes. A unique yet systematical investigation, including physicochemical property changes and structural evolution behaviours, has been conducted over the wide range of fluxes applied to actual welding of EH36 shipbuilding steels. Combined with spectroscopic methods, structural behaviours of network formers such as SiO2, Al2O3 and TiO2 and network modifiers such as MgO, MnO and CaO have been illustrated. Viscosity and ionic conductivity have been found to be positively associated with the degree of polymerisation.

Jabiru Metals completed a feasibility study on the Jaguar Base Metal Project in July 2005. The study was based on conventional truck haulage via a decline. Conveyor haulage was considered but not in sufficient detail to provide a meaningful comparison. The current study investigates the cost and productivity of alternative ore transport systems for the Jaguar project. The options considered are conventional underground truck, conveyor, road train, rigid frame truck, monorail haulage and shaft hoisting. Shaft hoisting was not considered in detail due to the high capital outlay for such a relatively short mine life of less than six years. This study goes beyond the common approach of evaluating haulage systems in isolation; it includes development costs, timing of ore production and costs associated with mine services as well as administration and milling costs. The results of this study indicate that the best haulage option for the Jaguar project is conventional truck using the Hitachi AH400 trucks. The net present value (NPV) for this option is A$8.13 million higher than the next best option namely the Kiruna E635 electric truck. The conveyor option has the lowest operating cost per tonne of ore but the longer development time negatively impacts on its NPV. The monorail option is considered impractical due to the number and length of trains required to achieve production targets.

In recent years, due to advances in designing of various magnet assemblies, a wide range of magnetic materials with different properties can be concentrated. Jalal Abad iron ore beneficiation plant, which is located in Iran, Kerman province, is currently producing iron ore concentrate with the capacity of 0.8 Mt/a by having medium intensity magnetic separators (MIMS) with rougher and cleaner stages that finally leads to the production of an iron concentrate with the Fe grade of about 65 per cent. In this plant, the rougher tailings directly goes to the thickener as the final tailings and cleaner tailings feeds to the ball mill for regrinding. Since some hematite particles with weak magnetic properties cannot be recovered from only these two stages of magnetic separation, the obtained tailings from this concentration plant has approximately an iron grade of 25 per cent to 27 per cent. Accordingly, laboratory processing tests were conducted on the obtained representative sample of the final tailings. Based on the experimental results performed on final tailings, a new magnetic drum separator with a specific magnetic assembly was designed that could finally lead to product with iron grade range of 58 per cent to 60 per cent with relative and total weight per cent of 8.6 per cent and 3.86 per cent. Finally, it could be concluded that feeding of magnetite particles to the existing drum separators, due to their high magnetic field intensity, cannot efficiently lead to improvement of the grade of concentrate. Therefore, pilot magnetic separation tests were done on the final concentrate for evaluation of product upgrading probability. Consequently, by increasing another stage of cleaning and by decreasing the magnetic field intensity, the final product grade could be enhanced from 65 per cent to 67 per cent.

A series of petrological studies were carried out on the characteristics of alteration and mineralisation in mainly structural-controlled (Deep Star, Meikle, Deep Post) and predominantly lithological-controlled (Post-Betze-Screamer and West Leeville) gold deposits in the northern district of the Carlin trend, Nevada. Alteration and mineralisation in these deposits are hosted in a sequence of calcareous clastic units of the Devonian Popovich Formation, into which have been emplaced a number of Jurassic intrusions, and syn- to post-mineral Eocene dikes. Four hydrothermal events have been recognised in these deposits: an initial Devonian base metal system and early diagenesis; a Mississippian stage of alteration in conjunction with burial metamorphism; contact and hydrothermal alteration and base metal-gold mineralisation associated with the emplacement of the Jurassic intrusions; and a Carlin-style gold system related to Eocene magmatism.

This paper considers three aspects of cemented fill practice and research in Mount Isa. Firstly, an account is given of the use of Portland cemented hydraulic fill, considering mainly the role and specifications of the fill used but including brief description of fill preparation and placement. Data resulting from a Portland cemented hydraulic fill sampling, curing and cesting campaign covering about 18 months of operating practice are presented, analysed and discussed. These yield information indicating the mode of operation of a fully-automated fill preparation station, as well as a means of comparing field and laboratory strength results. A technique with potential for use as a fill quality control without actual strength testing is also described. Results of a fill research programme conducted by the author in Mount Isa since early 1968 are presented, involving both Portland cemented hydraulic fill and altei._acive, cheaper, additives for cementing hydraulic Fill.

Projects must be flexible to account for the rapid development of new technologies and changing stakeholder expectations. Coupled with calls for bleeding-edge solutions, customers, shareholders, and regulators demand robust, safe products and systems-of-systems. Developing and integrating these solutions is becoming increasingly complex and maintaining the flexibility required to ‘pivot’ to effective solutions can be a serious challenge. The necessary flexibility is fundamental to the Agile ethos, and this family of methodologies therefore offers a potential solution to this challenge (Beedle et al, 2001). These have traditionally been delivered with systems engineering applied through a Waterfall methodology. Agile Systems Engineering combines both approaches and presents a means to achieve these goals without compromising flexibility, quality or safety. A robust methodology for the application of Agile Systems Engineering is required to enhance practical outcomes and reduce risk for real-world mining projects.

The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern QuTbec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed by ultra-fine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultra-fine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulfides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 ¦ and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3 per cent S, 0.07 per cent Cu and traces of antimony (0.03 per cent). The mineralogical characterisation showed the presence of 65 per cent gangue minerals, 23 per cent pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6 per cent arsenopyrite, 2.2 per cent pyrite and 0.08 per cent chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05 per cent) and sphalerite (0.03 per cent). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3 - 5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20¦C and for 72 hours extracted 97.0 per cent Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7 per cent Au extraction. A 16-hour pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-hour cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5 per cent. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0 per cent. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2 per cent. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80 per cent. Efficient cyanidation of an ultra-fine sulfide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultra-fine sulfide concentrates. The high addition of lead nitrate would certainly make cyanide destruction easier; consequently reducing the effluent treatment costs and making possible to meet the discharge regulations criteria.CITATION:DeschOnes, G and Fulton, M, 2013. Downhole Assay tools are a geophysical method to collect an instigated response from the material surrounding a drill hole and deliver a multielement proxy-assay. They were first tested in the Pilbara at the turn of this century, however since 2011 they have seen a more focused testing and implementation regime with multiple companies across multiple Pilbara mine sites. The increase in the volume of data has led to advances in the measurements and significant improvements to the efficiency of the calibration process. Pulsed Fast and Thermal Neutron Activation Analysis (PFTNA) downhole assay tools collect gamma photon spectra which are characteristic of elemental signatures. One of the key components of the technique is calibrating the spectral signatures to lab assays. Each tool is slightly different due to the organic nature of the crystal detector and therefore responds slightly differently. Environment and hole conditions as well as ore characteristics are among other external influencing factors. Thus, a unique calibration is required for each tool. In addition, not all elements are measured directly, but some are actually characterised by proxy, meaning that if the signal-to-noise ratio for an element is small, it may be easier to identify the mineral or geology in which that element is found and thus infer the concentration of the element. These proxies may differ for each site or geology type within a site. There is a large advantage to build a unique calibration per tool at each site rather than a universal one to be used across the whole province. This then delivers the accuracy and precision of measurements that mining companies require for modern operations. Early work with the tool required several thousand metres of calibration data and several weeks of analysis to build each calibration. This process has now been streamlined to significantly reduce the amount of data required and the analysis time to make it much easier to introduce new tools to a site with an existing model or to create new models. This paper details the calibration process, illustrating the increasing accuracy of the models as training data are acquired as well as the methods for transferring a calibration from one tool to another.

ThyssenKrupp specialises in the manufacture of high-grade steel-sheet products. Its main customers include the automotive, construction, household appliance, energy and packaging industries.At its works in Duisburg, Germany, ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe produces 12 Mt of crude steel annually, making Duisburg one of the world’s largest steel hubs.ThyssenKrupp have installed an online elemental analyser and limestone dosing control System on one of three Sinter strands at Duisburg in an attempt to control the sinter raw mix with better precision. Traditionally, set point changes to the raw mixture were made after sampling and laboratory analysis of the sinter product. The analyser chosen uses prompt gamma neutron activation analysis to determine the elemental content of moving material on a conveyor each minute and was supplied by Thermo Fisher Scientific. The project goal was to control the CaO/SiO2 ratio (basicity) and reduce its variability in the sinter feed.Evaluation of the system has shown that the addition of the online analyser reduces the time lag related to the former method, therefore upset conditions can be reacted more quickly by the control system, and this has resulted in a more stable sintering process. As a result, the sinter feed variability in case of the basicity has been reduced by half. While CaO/SiO2 control was the initial aim of the project, a number of other benefi ts have been realised, such as a reduction in return fi nes and a financial benefi t of 0.11 €/ton of sinter attributed to the reduction of coke breeze and limestone. ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe has identifi ed that additional information available from the analyser could be used to optimise the complete sinter process.The project was carried out with a financial grant of the research program of the ‘Research Fund for Coal and Steel’.
