The central Taupo Volcanic Zone is a region of intense Quaternary silicic volcanism accompanying rapid crustal extension. Modem central TVZ is the most frequently active and productive silicic volcanic system on Earth, erupting rhyolite at c.0.28 m3 s-1. The rhyolites show no major compositional changes with time, but the total extent of magma chamber zonation has changed with the advent of rifting and crustal extension at c.0.7 Ma. At least 34 caldera-forming ignimbrite eruptions have formed a complex sequence of relatively short-lived, nested and/or overlapping volcanic centres in central TVZ. Taupo contrasts with other large silicic magmatic systems in the exceptionally high frequency, but small size, of caldera forming eruptions. This contrast reflects the thin, rifted nature of the TVZ crust that precludes the development of long term magmatic cycles at Taupo. Within central TVZ, non-rhyolitic compositions have been erupted apparently irregularly in time and space; in particular there is no evidence for a geographic separation of basalts from andesites. TVZ is a rifted arc, but its segmented nature, high thermal flux and voluminous rhyolitic volcanism make it unique on Earth.

Permanent rock bolts used to support rock tunnels are required to perform for the design life of the structure as a minimum. Quality of installation is critical to the performance over the life of the rock bolt.This paper will present the findings from an in investigation into the integrity of rock bolts installed in an underground hydroelectric power station cavern and access tunnel. The 25?mm diameter rock bolts were installed 50 years ago, tensioned and post cement grouted. Due to a major machine upgrade the whole facility was subject to an asset survey. The owners are responsible for managing the risks associated with the failure of these rock bolts and ensuring the structural integrity of the tunnels and caverns is maintained to continue operations, protect machinery, assure production and more importantly maintain a safe working environment for all employees and visitors.To help manage risk a proactive approach is desired. To this end a test schedule using a non-destructive testing (NDT) system was carried out by Independent Integrity Testing Pty Ltd (i2t). The system used in this application was RokTel™. The system operates by applying a small axial impact to the rock bolt end and measuring the resultant acceleration response. The rock bolt characteristics affect the acceleration response.The data output from the system is analysed principally using Fourier Analysis (FFT) and sinusoidal waves. The energy generated in the bar, the rate of damping and changes in frequency are all assessed. Testing was carried out on 70 rock bolts within the tunnel and cavern. A selection were then over cored, photographed and documented. The data gathered from the testing is then correlated with physical evidence to establish a calibration for the remainder of the rock bolts and assess if this is a viable method for identifying defective elements, and what degree of accuracy can be achieved. The semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill at the MMG Century operation has failing load cells that are essential to the control strategy used to stabilise the mill. Currently, mill-bearing pressure is used as a proxy for the load cells, but it has been found to be a noisy signal and lacking in useful sensitivity. It is also prone to variations and drift due to temperature. After consideration of a number of options, a non-contact acoustic array has been installed around the SAG mill to provide a more stable proxy load signal as well as other information about the internal operation of the?mill.The installation consists of 12 microphones to provide some detail into the operational differences that occur during normal operations at the MMG Century SAG mill. This acoustic approach acknowledges that operational grinding mills emit significant acoustic emissions that are a consequence of the dynamic environment prevailing inside them.Previous studies have attributed the acoustic noise to a range of events that occur inside these mills (Pax, 2011; 2012). Consequently, non-contact acoustic determinations of in-mill behaviour can provide powerful insights into the operation of the primary comminution tumbling mills. By measuring key microphone signal attributes at different positions around a mill, a holistic picture of mill internal operation can be developed.This paper will describe the installation of the 12 microphones and discuss the use of the acoustic load signals as a proxy for failing load cells. It will also present data from new observations of internal mill dynamics and the results of implementation of control using these acoustic signals. Reporting Codes are not prescriptive on methodologies to report or classify Mineral Resource Estimation results, but the assessment of risk and uncertainty is required, and is likely to be increasingly important in future Code updates. The 2012 JORC Code indicates that relative confidence in tonnage-grade estimations should be considered for classification, and that there should be a discussion of relative accuracy and confidence levels in the Mineral Resource Estimate. These considerations are also relevant to the drill hole spacing required for various classification categories, along with other geological and data quality criteria. This paper summarises the theory, principles and current practice of various drill hole spacing analysis techniques for both achieving a desired level of resource categorisation and for optimising grade control or resource drill-out costs. The authors provide practitioners with a guide in their use to assess uncertainty and relative accuracy, as illustrated by a number of case studies. While all drill hole spacing studies rely on the assumption of consistency of the continuity model from current to future drilling, the range of methods available provide much more objective outcomes than previously adopted ‘rules-of-thumb’.

As part of BHP Iron Ore's policy and goal of achieving a high standard of environmental management within its operations, a protocol for mine closure has evolved. The need to demonstrate sound environmental management with respect to site decommissioning meant that a comprehensive, environmentally sensitive closure protocol was required. Within this framework, a four-phase protocol was developed, the first phase was the determination of objectives in relation to site rehabilitation and end land use. The second phase was the determination of the process required to achieve these objectives. The third phase was the application of this process in a site specific manner. The fourth and final phase was monitoring of the site with regard to the achievement of determined objectives. The protocol was originally developed to direct the closure and decommissioning of the Goldsworthy site in 1992. This being the first total site decommissioning for BHP Iron Ore. Since that time the protocol has been successfully utilised for the closure of the Yampi (Koolan Island) operations (in 1993/94) and the Shay Gap/Nimingarra Operations (in 1994/95).

Geostatistical simulations are the best practice for uncertainty quantification in non-linear systems. Simulations are currently undertaken on an ad hoc basis in the mining industry due to high requirements in computing environments and advanced geostatistics. In contrast to the estimation process, multivariate simulations can be performed using different methods, tools, and computational environments, similar to data science. For large companies with multiple commodities it is important to have a standard framework to test, build, and run workflows using different methods, applications and computational environments. This work presents an auditable, modular and scalable framework to create geostatistical simulation workflows where the workflow is abstracted from the implementation. Key aspects: automation – workflows should be able to run automatically given updated data (if hands on modelling is not required); auditability – workflows should document key considerations and parameters; modularisation – workflows should permit swapping out components, for example substituting domaining in Leapfrog software with automated domaining using machine learning scripts; scalability – easy, repeatable, portable deployments on diverse infrastructure (for example, experimenting on a laptop, then moving to an on premise cluster or to the Cloud); reproducibility – parameters should be archived to permit re-running and reproduction of workflows in future years; and sensitivity analysis – any component of a workflow should be able to run with multiple scenarios of parameters and data to enable global uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis. The presented framework can be used to create different workflows for geostatistical simulations in multiple assets to quantify uncertainty in the value chain for resource categorisation, reserves uncertainty, value of information and robust mine planning amongst others.

Assessing the uncertainty and risk in mineral resource estimation is required for best practice and is implied by the public reporting codes in the categorisation of mineral resources and reserves. One industry best practice is quantifying the risk on future production for a given period, which can be done using two geostatistical approaches: conditional simulation and drill hole spacing studies based on estimation variances. Conditional simulation can provide a more complete and flexible answer to the problem, but it takes a fair amount of time to complete. Drill hole spacing studies are simpler, faster and can provide reasonable assessments of mineral resource uncertainty.This paper is a presentation of the principles, theory and practice of drill hole spacing studies. Various types of risk assessment are considered. Difficulties encountered in practice are discussed, and solutions are proposed. The important parameters impacting the results are reviewed. Loy Yang Power (LYP) owns and operates a 2160 MW brown coal fired, base load power station in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia (Loy Yang A). It also owns and operates a brown coal mine that supplies fuel to its own power station and a nearby 1000 MW power station owned by International Power (LoyYang B). The mine supplies 32 Mt of coal per annum from an open pit, which is currently about 4 km long by 2 km wide and 180 m deep. LYP has 500 employees and a substantial amount of work is also carried out by contractors and consultants. GHD Pty Ltd(GHD) has been contracted to provide mine planning and earth sciences expertise. GHD is an international professional services company that operates globally in many market sectors including mining, industry and the environment. The company has major offices in Melbourne and also within the Latrobe Valley. This paper sets out the experiences that GHD and LYP have gained in establishing a unique alliance arrangement for GHD to provide a range of mine planning, earth science, dam surveillance and environmental services to LYP. The underlying philosophy of the alliance is to closely align the objectives of the two companies such that GHDÆs recompense for service delivery is proportional to the benefit achieved by LYPÆs business. Quality of service, whole of life costs and risk management are important aspects and are reflected in key performance indicators against which GHDÆs performance is measured. Currently GHD provide 20 000 hours of labour to LYP per annum, which are delivered by up to 120 staff who possess the required diversity of skills. The paper explains how the contract was initially let as a conventional service agreement and explains why the contract was transformed into an alliance. It then illustrates the operation of the alliance with reference to the 2006 work program. The paper concludes with thoughts on how the arrangement can be further developed for the future to the benefit of both parties.

One of the earliest and continuing challenges in driving sustainable development in large scale resource industry projects is around the issue of assessment û how do you measure the sustainability of a mineral operation? One of the key road blocks when confronted with this challenge is the temptation of technical folks to reach for a definition of sustainability or sustainable development. But definitions, by definition, have boundaries and limitations that serve to constrain thinking û they limit the thinking of what we can achieve with sustainability (it also acts as a barrier that constrains innovation). Rather than seeking definitions, better understanding of the core perspectives around sustainability and their application to the minerals industry provides a much more powerful platform from which to conduct assessments. But it is only when these perspectives are combined with the right framework and supporting techniques that the complex becomes doable. With the support of the perspectives and the framework, various assessment and measurement methodologies can be used; the challenge is communicating to stakeholders the sustainability character of the project in ways that are meaningful and to which people can connect. Assessment is not about finding the best or most accurate methods that fulfil strictly academic and possibly abstract requirements. The challenge is to help people understand what the impacts are, and what the value contributions will be, in a format and language that make sense in their world-view.

Civil engineering infrastructures are often subjected to different types of natural and mechanical activities. These influences may result in serviceability or even in stability of structures due to material deformations, increased water content within the materials used or the formation of internal or adjacent cavities that may threaten the infrastructure. Construction practices can lead to development of such defects in the form of cavities. In civil engineering it is crucial to detect these variations in material properties and to detect the presence of defects. However, as they are often hidden from view, these attributes may be difficult or impossible to target with traditional testing methods. For these reasons rapid geophysical methods, such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), are increasingly being used. At the University of Queensland (UQ) GPR is used for detection of voids and cavities which have been caused by an over excavation of the earth pressure balance machine (EPB) operating in a closed mode.A variety of numerical simulations using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods and preliminary experiments have been carried out in order to specify information about the nature, type, size, location and other characteristics of targets to be detected by GPR. In doing this the difficulty of interpreting GPR data, which is mainly due to the complexity of the factors involved in multiple possible solutions of the observed features, can be overcome.

The study presented in this paper is based on the Kiirunavaara underground mine located in the northern part of Sweden. The deposit is mined using the sublevel caving (SLC) mining method. This paper briefly reviews the alternative SLC layouts, as well as presents challenges for the application. In Kiirunavaara currently, the traditional SLC design is employed, however, continuous improvement of material transportation systems used in mines generates a need for investigation of the current and future production area layouts in sublevel caving mines. When identifying the potential benefits of the alternative production area layouts, the production targets and effects must be further investigated to understand the benefits and potential effects. In this study, several different layouts have been investigated and evaluated. The designs include different development configurations and orepass infrastructure moved further away from the orebody and still require further investigation.

Segregation of tailings on deposition can occur as a result of a) sub-aqueous deposition, and b) sub-aerial deposition at lower solids concentrations (i.e. when the solids concentration is less than the segregation threshold). The effects are likely to be more pronounced in the case of subaqueous deposition.This paper presents the results of an investigation of a sub-aqueous tailings facility.Data from the investigation show extreme variations in particle size and density compared to test results for non-segregated ‘all-in” tailings. The results indicate that on segregation both the fine and coarse splits tend towards a well sorted (poorly graded) mix, and both have significantly lower consolidated density than the all in tailings. This result is reasonably well known for the case of the segregated fines (“slimes ponds”) but less appreciated for the coarse fraction. The results suggest that if the effects of segregation are not allowed for, the overall density of the deposit can be seriously over-estimated at the design stage. Also the quantity of water retained in the tailings can significantly influence water recovery and water balance results.CITATION:Seddon, K, 2018. This paper discusses the development of a strategy for ensuring long-term geotechnical stability of final pit walls at AngloGold AustraliaÆs Sunrise Dam Gold Mine. The strategy makes use of improved blasting techniques, changes to the mining sequence and other geotechnical techniques. Only the blasting techniques will be discussed in this paper. These were developed from numerous trials over a period of several months from May 2003 through to November 2003. The focus was to reduce crest loss damage and thereby improve final wall integrity, maintain designed safe berm widths, and ensure long-term stability. Crest loss mechanisms are now understood and are explained in this paper. The preferred solution is outlined; which is a combination of improved blasting and changes in the mining sequence to cater for pre-existing ground conditions. These ground conditions include dynamic hyper saline water with sometimes intersecting steeply dipping discrete structures. Project requirements were defined as mitigating or eliminating crest loss using 127 mm diameter pre-splitting and targeting minimal production blasting vibration levels against the walls. Blast results were measured by post blast visual inspections and video. Blast design input utilised the predictive algorithms built into simulation software when attempting to minimise vibration levels against the walls. Protection of the already fired pre-split line is now achieved using small charges against the wall and timing sequences which form a mask for the later firing main charges. The pre-split spacing is now modified to suit the geology. There eight blast domains identified around the perimeter of the pit, each having varying joint orientation. In addition, blasting the bench adjacent to the berm crest has particular considerations not required by the middle and lower benches. The preferred solution was to purposefully translate this damaged top section of the pre-split bench into a planned subsequent dig zone. The design of this top æweightÆ is a direct response to the nature of the crest loss mechanism.

Computational models are very useful for studying many of the physical mechanisms which can cause sample bias. Within such models we can predict the trajectories of all individual particles and thereby make observations which are not possible for physical systems. Physical mechanisms highlighted include congestion at the cutter aperture, particles bouncing over the cutter aperture, air drag on fine particles, waves of material being bulldozed off the belt by the upstream side of the body of square cutters, and particles being thrown by the leading edges of cross-belt cutter blades. Having identified relevant physical mechanisms for an existing cutter, we can estimate the extent to which they are likely to result in unequal representation of portions of a stream of material and thereby estimate the maximum likely sample bias.

I have spent most of the past 35 years working as an economic geologist in the area of exploration and development of base and precious metals. Most of this period has been as an employee of Trans-National-Corporations (TNC's). I presently act as a consulting geologist to a joint venture company, bringing together two such TNC's: Anglo American Corporation and affiliated companies De Beers (Diamonds) and Minorco (Metals mining outside of Southern Africa), and Normandy Mining Limited ofAustralia. Normandy is presently through its gold arm PosGold, Australia's largest gold miner and Anglo American can claim to be the world's largest gold company producing over 280 tonnes of gold a year, more than twice its nearest rival Gold Fields of South Africa. In addressing this topic, the role that Government can, and should play in mineral development, I will be drawing heavily on some examples from these and other TNC's experience in recent offshore mining investment.

WMC Resources Pty Ltd û Copper Uranium Division operates the large underground Olympic Dam Mine at Roxby Downs, South Australia. These operations mine and process the ore to produce refined copper, uranium oxide, gold and silver. In mid-1996, the company committed to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project (OEP) to expand production from 3.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (85 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal) to over 9.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (over 200 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal). Along with the increase in the ore production capacity of the underground mine and the surface ore handling and processing facilities, expansion of the backfill system was required. The target backfill placement rate was 2.0 million cubic metres of backfill per annum which was to be predominantly delivered as cemented aggregate fill (CAF). This paper discusses the engineering activities undertaken to assess and change the method of designing the required strength of fill exposures. In addition, the operational changes that were introduced to achieve the required fill quantities and the mix designs to meet the specified strengths, including the use of alternate binders, are discussed. This work resulted in a large increase in the fill placement rate and a reduction in the overall unit cost of fill.
