Mining deep orebodies is increasingly becoming the norm as the ‘easy’ orebodies are depleted. Deep ore mining requires significant ventilation and cooling infrastructure to not only meet regulatory requirements for air quality but also to achieve acceptable workplace temperatures with the higher strata rock temperatures and increased auto-compression. At the same time, advances in battery equipment technology are turning the possibility of a battery powered fleet into reality. The switch from a diesel fleet to a battery powered fleet offers several positive opportunities for the design and operation of a deep mine.The potential to reduce ventilation and cooling requirements due to battery powered equipment results in significant cost savings for mine development and infrastructure. Battery powered fleets are not subject to the same dilution requirements associated with diesel fleets thus allowing lower ventilation rates. At the low ventilation volumes possible with a battery powered fleet, surface refrigeration plants are limited with respect to the amount of cooling that can be delivered to the workface. Considerations for calculating the optimum air flow and cooling requirements are presented. Considerations for locating the refrigeration plant are also discussed. "Premature failure of rock bolts has been recorded at twelve underground coalmines over the past 15 years in Australia. Over the last four years, UNSW Australia has been conducting an Australian Research Council (ARC) and Industry funded linkage research project into premature failure of rock bolts. The extent of the problem was investigated by underground surveys of mines with known prematurely failed bolts using visual mapping, non-destructive load and ultrasound testing. A major component of this project was to define the environmental factors responsible for corrosion of rock bolts. The environment to which a rock bolt is exposed will include groundwater chemistry, the mineralogy of the strata, atmosphere within the drill hole and even microbial activity. This paper focuses on the groundwater survey and analysis findings to date along with in-hole bolt corrosion coupons installed into field sites. Corrosivity classification systems exist for general corrosion but do not apply to the rock bolt stress corrosion cracking (SCC) problem found in Australian underground coal. The method of in situ investigations is leading towards the building of a corrosivity classification model to assist mines in prediction of premature rock bolt failure. With the continued implementation of stricter limitations on the discharge of excess process water from all existing and future mining and metallurgical operations, the design and operation of the entire process water circuit must form an integral part of any total operational package. It is far better to æanticipate and circumvent the problemÆ rather than be forced into an expensive remediation program after the event. By far the greatest problem relates to the treatment and disposal of what is generically known as acid drainage. In simple terms, an acidic metal sulfate solution is generated by a series of chemical and biological reactions as soon as most sulfide minerals are exposed to air and water. Treatment of this solution by one or more of a wide range of chemical and physical options can involve substantial capital and operating costs, although there are recent processing options that yield saleable by-products, thereby reducing the financial liability of what is effectively a waste stream. This presentation provides an overview of the Australian situation compared with the rest of the world and outlines the basic features of a number of the more advanced passive and active acid drainage options.

Underground fractured aquifers in the Ernest Henry deposit are to a large extent controlled by deposit scale brittle structures. The underground mine has been subdivided into nine water zones based on hydrogeological characteristics, including conductivity and connectivity, within the mining areas bound by these structures. The nine water zones and the hydrological characteristics of the associated structures are utilised for risk assessing mine development and for targeting diamond drilling dewatering activities. Wireline and conventional underground diamond drilling techniques have been used throughout the network of underground aquifers with the aim of dewatering areas within the mining footprint. These dewatering drilling campaigns have historically been highly successful at lowering aquifer water levels throughout the underground workings. As part of recent mine expansion activities, diamond drilling has intersected high pressure (>507 psi), high temperature (>50°C) and high flow water (>3 L/sec) in as yet unconstrained underground aquifers. Groundwater is typically conducted through rubble and clay rich faults, further hampering progression of drilling. Drilling through fractured aquifers at depth presents both mine planning as well as safety challenges. Recent drill holes have been delayed or abandoned when aquifers hosting this high pressure, high flow water have been intersected, risking mine planning deadlines. Recent technological innovation developed to control groundwater outflows from the diamond drill hole whilst drilling has been trialled at the Ernest Henry Mine. This case study focuses on the utilisation of alternative drill methodologies to allow the current drilling campaign to continue without delay, whilst also improving safety conditions encountered on the drill site.

Canada’s Quebec province operates 26 metal mines, 19 of which are producing gold and generating over C$1.8 billion (US$1.3 billion) annually. In all those mines, numerous samples of rock are collected and analysed daily in laboratories in order to determine their gold content. However, laboratory results are generally available within 48 hours of sampling (depending on the number of samples received by the laboratory and the priority of the results), thus potentially slowing down mining activities. In an attempt to find a solution for delayed laboratory results, Laval University, in partnership with the National Research Council Canada (NRC), the National Institute for Scientific Research (INRS) and four mining companies (Agnico Eagle, Canadian Malartic, Hecla Québec and Iamgold) have launched the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) project for in situ real-time mining sample analysis. This work aims to minimise the amount of LIBS point sampling necessary to be representative of a full scan of the analysed area. Eight sampling patterns are investigated. A statistical analysis of the data was performed by varying the pattern steps. Results show that two of the patterns, 1 and 5 (single diagonal crossing the stratification of the samples with opposite slopes) minimise the amount of point sampling while remaining representative. The most successful results are obtained from steps which are greater than 6. In terms of the type of material, pattern 5 and steps 9 are better for core sampling, while pattern 1 and steps 8 are better for rock sampling. The geological explanation for these results is the heterogeneous distribution of gold in the sample which seems to be more homogeneous in the rocks than in the core sample due to the small rock size. Most 3D geological modelling tools were designed for the needs of the oil industry or detailed mine planning and are not suited to the variety of situations encountered in other application domains. Moreover, the usual modelling tools are not able to quantify the uncertainty of the geometric models generated. The potential field method was designed to build 3D geological models from data available in geology and mineral exploration, namely the geological map and a digital terrain model (DTM), structural data, borehole data and interpretations of the geologist. This method considers a geological interface as a particular isosurface of a scalar field defined in the 3D space, called a potential field. The interpolation of that field, based on cokriging, provides surfaces that honour all the data. The 3D model and its parts are always consistent with the observations. New developments allow the covariance of the potential field to be identified from the structural data. This makes it possible to associate sensible cokriging standard deviations to the potential field estimates and to express the uncertainty of the geometric model. It also, for the first time, gives a statistically optimal, geologically sound way of interpolating geology, other than directly joining the dots as you do with CAD. Practical implementation issues for producing 3D geological models are presented: how to handle faults, how to honour borehole ends, how to take relationships between several interfaces into account, how to model thin beds over many kilometres, how to optimise lithological properties and how to integrate gravimetric and magnetic data. We describe all geology surfaces and volumes using implicit functions. These are then rendered onto the required sections, plans, etc. The estimation of orebody grades and tonnes, using an unbiased and optimal geostatistical technique, makes use of the stratigraphically bound 3D geology model. An application to the geological modelling of the Hamersley iron ore district, Australia, is briefly presented.

The investigation of the potential of the Webb/Baynes block of the Buller coalfield for anode carbon manufacture has generated much information on the physical beneficiation characteristics of the Buller coals in general. A further 36 drill holes of the block in question and several other samples have been analysed by sink/float analysis, either at a single density or over a range of densities. In addition, many samples have been beneficiated on a laboratory shaking table or by flotation. The ash content can be reduced by a variable factor. The reduction factor of between two and four by sink/float analysts is understandably less for tabling where separation is not perfect. All Buller coals behave similarly, there being greater ash reduction factors for higher ash coals.

External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of operating mines. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving the focus on safety, sustainable mining, green issues, profitability and productivity. There is a very high emphasis on ‘reducing cost to improve’, lower mining and beneficiation costs by eliminating waste/inefficiencies (reduce people, use less consumables, multiskilling, etc). The internal mining environment is getting tougher to operate in, with the deposits being more difficult to mine, more difficult to manage due to external pressure along with issues associated with maintaining quality, etc.Technological and environmental developments too numerous to mention, mean that cost control models, reduction in human resource numbers, as well as other drastic measures to curtail expenditure and increase profitability have become part of everyday business. The capability to manage the mining environment in a systemic manner has been lacking and this increases the pressure for performance on those individuals operating and managing mines.Working smarter has become crucial to ensure that businesses optimise the use of their resources, become more safety conscious, more productive and remain cost-effective, while recognising the importance of sustainable mining now and in the future. The logic of determining and managing to the capability of the mining value chain will be examined and the underlying assumptions or beliefs guiding behaviour and decision-making will be highlighted.In order to identify the obstacles in the mining value chain that hinder achievement of its full potential, the following questions have to be asked:What are the factors that influence the performance of a mining value chain?What is the design capacity of the mine?How can the inherent flow and value capacity of a mine be determined?What types of solutions will allow a mine to operate at its inherent flow and value capacity?This article will discuss the way we plan, measure, assess and manage the mine value chain, by addressing the following factors:balanced capacity versus flow and value capacity designthe use of averagingoptimising individual components in a value chain versus optimising the whole value chain.Optimising flow and value through the mining value chain is one of the three pillars of Mineral Resource Throughput Management (MR™). With the declining of high-quality hematite and magnetite iron ore reserves and the increasing accumulation of material resulting from mining and beneficiation operations that appear as lowquality depots and discharged materials in tailing dams, the necessity of recycling these reserves is increasingly becoming a critical demand. The Chadormalu iron ore mine is among the largest deposits of magnetite-hematite iron ore in Iran. In this mine, the total wet processing tails accumulated in tailing dams are over 92 Mt containing 25–40 per cent Fe. Laboratory and pilot tests on tailing samples led to the design and implementation of the Chadormalu Tailing Recovery plant (CTR) with a unique process circuit in Iran. In the CTR plant, after three steps of re-pulping with spiral classifiers and sanding machines, the underflow is concentrated by two stages of WMIMS and produces 64 per cent Fe grade magnetite concentrate. The tailings of the drums are mixed together and introduced into the hematite recovery section, including two stages of VPHGMS separators, and 60 per cent Fe grade hematite concentrate is produced. This plant has been in operation for over ten years with a total yield of 18.93 per cent. Due to changes in the materials extracted through new tailing dams, the quality of the final concentrate dramatically dropped to 56.36 per cent Fe and 0.79 per cent P; therefore, applying reverse flotation and removing phosphorus from the final concentrate was inevitable. By using this approach, upgrading of the concentrate to 63.01 per cent Fe and 0.05 per cent P was obtained. Furthermore, regarding the high amount of phosphorus in the tailing streams, direct flotation has been designed to produce apatite concentrate as a by-product stream through a flotation system comprising series banks of Rougher, Cleaner, and Re-Cleaners flotation cells. Hence based on the results, at optimum conditions, a final apatite concentrate with a yield of 15.78 per cent and 14.06 per cent P could be achieved. Successful implementation of this project has led to the production of magnetite-hematite and apatite concentrates with annual capacities of 250 000 and 45 000 t, together with total yields of 11.59 per cent and 6.19 per cent (includes de-sliming of apatite flotation feed), respectively.

Henty Gold Mine is an underground operation producing 100 000 ounces of gold per annum. The original mining method used was flatbacking with paste fill. However, a non-entry method û uphole benching û was introduced in 1998 to recover the deteriorating crown pillars. Initial challenges were encountered, including poor drilling accuracy, difficulty in charging holes and poor rise performance. These challenges were overcome by a Continuous Improvement Team, consisting of mining engineers, supervisors and miners. Following this, the Team implemented further changes aimed at reducing ore loss and dilution. A second area addressed by the Team was development blasting, where innovative detonator technology known as the ExelTM DevelDetTM was introduced and rapidly accepted by the operators. Continued use of the ExelTM DevelDetTM resulted in a number of benefits, such as easier bogging, less perimeter damage, faster charging and hook-up and decreased wastage. Finally, improvements were made in the area of explosive handling, where competency-based training of operators was conducted and manual handling of ANFO has been significantly reduced by the introduction of the MiniMoverTM into the underground magazine.

The possibility of using an acidic autogenous hydrogen direct reduced iron (H-DRI) slag as a basis for vanadium extraction is investigated. For a raw material to be suitable for producing high-quality FeV, the vanadium oxide content should be sufficiently high and the phosphorus oxide content in a tolerable range. Therefore, the feasibility for vanadium extraction relies on fulfilling two demands: the predominate partitioning of phosphorus to the metal and vanadium to the slag. Correspondingly, the behaviours of phosphorus and vanadium in the Al2O3-SiO2-FeOx-VyOz-P2O5-Fe system were studied experimentally. Slag, 10 g, was put in contact with liquid iron, 30 g, for different durations (2–24 hrs) in closed alumina crucibles at 1873 K. The slag composition was varied between 33.1– 49.3 wt per cent Al2O3, 27.1–46.7 wt per cent SiO2, 16.6–30.1 wt per cent FeOx, and 2.5– 8.8 wt per cent V2O3. The equilibrium phosphorus distribution was 0.42, while the vanadium distribution ranged from 7.6 to 43.4, increasing with the Al2O3- and the FeOx-content.

I am wearing two hats today. When the invitations went out to participate in this forum, two were received in the head office of the Department of Lands and Survey - one addressed to the Director-General of Lands and one to the Chairman of the National Parks Authority. It seemed logical that as the department is responsible to the Government for the administration of the National Parks Act 1952, we should respond by providing one speaker to cover both the department's interests and those of the National Parks Authority. I hope, however, that this will not blur the clear distinction which exists in the context of the mineral industry between Crown land on the one hand administered by the department for the statutory Land Settlement Board and national parks and allied reserves on the other hand which are the responsibility of the National Parks Authority.

A model was developed of a CIL/CIP circuit for recovery of gold and silver. The model uses a simple two rate representation of the leaching kinetics. Parameters for the leaching kinetics may be simply obtained by sampling the feed to a circuit and the tailings from each tank and assaying the solids for both gold and silver to obtain the assay profiles of the solids down the tanks. The parameters in such a leaching model would be expected to be a function of the ore type, the grind, whether oxygen was used and the general chemical environment. These parameters are primary inputs to the model for any simulation. Standard power law relationships are used to express the practical equilibrium between the gold and silver cyanides adsorbed on the active carbon and the tenor of the solutions. The parameters for this may be derived from solution and carbon assays for the same set of samples. The model is constructed by writing a mass balance for gold and silver in and out of each tank in the train and for the circuit overall. Other inputs to a simulation are the feed rate of ore, per cent solids of the slurry in the tanks, gold and silver loadings of the input æbarrenÆ carbon and the rate of movement of carbon through the circuit counter-current to the slurry. With appropriate practical parameters the simulation is able to reproduce typical tank profiles.

The Effect of Using Different Comminution Procedures on the Flotation of Platinum Group Minerals The use of High Pressure Grinding Rollers (HPGR) has been widely reported to have major benefits in the treatment of minerals such as iron ore and diamonds. To date there have been few investigations into its use in the treatment of ores containing Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs). HPGRs are known to reduce energy consumption and wear costs and improve the throughput in the circuit. In the present investigation the effect of the comparative use of HPGR and conventional crushing in combination with either dry or wet rod milling on the flotation of PGMs was studied using batch flotation. Previous studies of a base metal sulfide ores had shown that either HPGR or conventional crushing followed by dry milling produced the highest grades and recoveries. However in the present study it was observed that a similar treatment produced the worst results and the highest grades and recoveries were obtained for the case of conventional crushing in combination with wet milling. The HPGR showed no advantages in terms of flotation performance and dry milling produced particularly poor flotation results. The results were investigated further using various surface characterisation techniques in order to determine the reason for the decrease in grades and recoveries of platinum when using dry milling and HPGR as opposed to the case for base metal sulfides. The feed and product samples were analysed using ToF-SIMS, XPS and MLA. The paper will propose reasons to explain the different flotation behaviour of the two ore types following the various comminution processes focusing on the surface characteristics of the ores, the particle size distribution and the pulp chemistry.

An improved ground support method for development intersections, wide spans and stope brows was implemented at Kanmantoo mine. The method uses a jumbo to simultaneously drill and install self-drilling anchors (SDAs) to depths from 4.5 m to 7.0 m. Resin is subsequently pumped into each SDA using a specially designed integrated tool carrier basket, with plating occurring within 10 mins due to rapid resin cure. This methodology means that SDAs can be installed rapidly due to reduced process steps and wait times with reduced hazards to personnel. Cablebolts are used extensively in underground mines to reinforce the ground in wide spans, such as at intersections and stope brows. The flexible cablebolt tendon allows for a long, continuous and high-capacity reinforcing element to be inserted into the rock. A common cablebolt installation practice at Australian underground mines that do not utilise a mechanised cable bolter, is for cablebolt holes to be drilled by a jumbo or longhole rig, hand installation and grouting by a service crew, then plate tensioning following a grout curing wait time of typically 12 to 24 hours. This process involves multiple separate labour-intensive work processes and results in reduced availability of priority headings. This paper discusses the development history of vertical SDA use in wide spans at Kanmantoo mine. The installation process is fully described, including aspects such as reliable in-hole coupling of SDAs, resin selection and pumping aspects. A cost benefit assessment, and a case for ground stability are presented to compare cablebolt use to SDAs in development intersections.
