Small scale gold mining operations in Papua New Guinea (PNG) have been observed to use very low flow rates of water in sluice boxes. In a series of laboratory experiments carried out to determine whether this approach was unsatisfactory or not for their situation, indications were obtained that it had some advantages in the recovery of fine gold but at the cost of considerable throughput. The separation mechanisms operating in such a system are analysed.

Accurate sampling of slurry streams is extremely important for metallurgical accounting in mining operations, not only for measuring the ore grade from the mine, but also for measuring the recovery of mineral by the mineral processing plant. Accurate sampling is also required for intermediate streams in complex circuits for determining efficiencies of processing units within the plant. As the profitability of the minerals industry is squeezed more with time, greater emphasis is being placed on efficient use of the resource and accountability of the various sections of the mining operations. This has led to increased awareness and interest in obtaining statistically correct sampling across the operations. Accurate sampling is not only required for metallurgical accounting, but is also required for on-line analysis of the slurry streams for elemental analysis and for particle size. Sampling of slurry streams for metallurgical accounting purposes has traditionally been one of the areas of concern in mineral processing plants. In the first instance, the sampler must be designed to comply with the fundamental principles of sampling theory and must provide a representative sample of the slurry stream. In the second instance, the sampler must continue to reliably provide a representative sample, regardless of wear of the equipment or build up of solids with time and other operating issues. To-date the main type of sampler that has been used in mineral processing plants for metallurgical accounting has been the Cross-Cut sampler. These have a cutter that periodically cuts across the full slurry stream. For large flow slurry streams, these are often followed by a secondary and perhaps a tertiary sampler, to reduce the flow-rate or sample, to a manageable size. This paper discusses a new method of sampling slurry streams that has been developed by Thermo Gamma-Metrics, previously known as Amdel Instrumentation. The new samplers overcome many of the problems associated with cross-cut samplers while providing a sample which is representative of the main stream, throughout the life of the sampling system. The sampler is called the SamStat (Sampling Station) and it is now proven in many applications across many countries and mineral processing plants (PGMs, Cu/Au, Pb/Zn, etc).

Solutions of acetonitrile in water dissolve water soluble copper(I) chloride. Removal of volatile acetonitrile from the resulting solutions, by distillation with low grade steam, precipitates pure copper(I) chloride. This is used to purify a crude copper chloride sublimate from the chlorination of nickel matte but is applicable to other sources of copper(I) chloride. The pure product can be converted to pure copper(I) oxide, copper(II) oxychloride or pure copper metal directly.

Greater use should be made of lineations in investigations of the engineering properties of rock masses and in structural studies guiding prospecting programmes.A prominent alignment of elongate mineral grains and stretched pebbles usually marks the primary direction in which metamorphic rocks have been extended by flow. In local adjustment zones separating masses that have extended different amounts, this lineation has been a direction of slip. Kinks and crumples resulting from this slip lie in secondary lineation directions transverse to the primary mineral lineation.During deformation relatively mobile materials move into dilatant zones caused by irregularities in primary flow directions. This secondary movement transverse to lineated, primary-flow directions is the cause of crenulations and folds with axes parallel to flow lineations.INTRODUCTIONThe arrangement of inequidimensional particles in rocks is rarely statistically random. Platy minerals tend to be parallel to bedding and foliation planes. Elongate particles and linear structures lie most frequently in certain lineation directions. The types of elongate particles in lineated rocks include needle and blade shaped mineral grains, sheared out segregations, and stretched pebbles, amygdules, and aolites.Crenulations and kinks are the most common of the linear structures involved.Faint lineations are readily overlooked. Even strong lineations have been ignored. This talk was delivered in Kalgoorlie in April this year, to the Kalgoorlie Branch of The Institution of Engineers, Australia. We believe it is of such interest to members of our Institute and readers of this publication we believe it important to extend the audience who have the opportunity to read it. An edited version follows:"Why should we be so concerned about Mining Related Education; after all is said and done, the mining industry is not a great employer of persons?"The mining industry is capital rather than labour intensive. It employs only 2.7 per cent of the national workforce. However; the minerals industry is Australia's major exporter accounting for over 40 per cent of the nation's total export of goods.In Western Australia the value of minerals production in 1985 was about $5,000 million and consequently mineral exports accounted for about 53 per cent of the total value of overseas exports from the State. The diversity of the mining industry is also worthy of mention and produces iron ore, alumina, gold, nickel and mineral sands. That apart, our potential to become a major producer of diamonds, rare earths and petroleum products is considerable, not to mention base metals (copper, lead and zinc) and uranium.Our mining industry is of national importance and contributes in excess of 30 per cent of the total value of Australian overseas trade. Although the mining ind ustry does not employ many people, the people it employs contribute very much more, per capita, to the wealth of the nation than do employees in any other sector of our economy.No-one would deny that during the 20th century Australians have depended on the export earnings from the sale of relatively unprocessed agricultural products and more recently the sale of relatively unprocessed minerals for their standard of living.Not surprisingly, therefore, our economy is highly vulnerable to unstable world commodity market prices.The slump in trade we are currently experiencing (in first quarter 1987-Edition) was brought about by the over supply of the raw materials we produce. However, the recent downturn in world market prices is more serious than previous slumps because in part it is due to technological advances 'in other countries which could have a permanent effect on the world trade of primary products.

All development proposals have to run the gauntlet of the approvals process. Major resource projects are generally subject to particularly intense scrutiny. The key element in the approvals process is that it is about making decisions that take into account the benefits or otherwise to society as a whole - the interests of any one group do not take precedence. Most groups tend to see their relatively narrow interests as representing those of the broader society. Each group develops their arguments for or against a project in isolation, and then presents these to an arbiter in an adversarial situation. From this mire of argument and counter-argument it is often difficult to discern just what the real benefits of a project are, and opportunities for agreement and constructive modification of proposals to meet real concerns are often missed. The contention made in this paper is that the inevitable differences between these various viewpoints should be harnessed to help the proponent to come up with a proposal that is clearly of overall benefit to society and which gains approval. It is better to accept that no one group has a monopoly on wisdom in this area and to engender an environment of creative tension in which the pros and cons can be broadly considered and good planning and design used to produce a proposal that has a high chance of success. There are a variety of ways in which this approach can be implemented. Some of these options will be discussed in terms of their likely applicability to energy projects and their potential for success.

Analysis of rock discontinuities, collected using a scanline method, has been undertaken at the Iron Duke open cut mine, on the southern margin of the Middleback Range in the Gawler Craton, South Australia. The iron mineralisation, which is a product of supergene enrichment of carbonate sediments, is located on the W (western) limb of a gently N plunging D2 macrosyncline. Mesofolds plunge shallowly to the NE or steeply to SE, suggesting two shortening events, of which the second produced significant macrofolds. Discontinuities include:faults and shears which display variable orientations, mainly striking WNW dipping steeply N; mesofractures or joints maintaining a well constrained orientation, dipping steeply S, subvertical striking E-W; and bedding surfaces which are folded about a gently N plunging axis. Through this example of the regional control exerted on local discontinuities, it is clear that discontinuities are not randomly distributed as often assumed in purely statistical approaches. Commonly for rocks of any age there is a distinct discontinuity pattern, reflecting the geological deformation history. If the controls exerted on local rock discontinuities can be determined and assigned a number related to their significance, the way forward is available to develop a site specifc knowledge base that can make realistic predictions for any position in a given rock mass. Such a procedure would involve assessment of the regional geology, linked to scanned discontinuities either via manual or automatic means. Recent advances in automatic scanning rock faces (eg by the I-SiTE Laser Radar) to determine discontinuities distributions, enable the rapid calculation of rock characteristics. This is a significant advance in rock engineering, providing a method of safe and quick collection of data. However it creates problems in the presence of an increase in the geotechnical data available, which should be assessed in the context of the regional geology. Although techniques are underway to analyse post-blast discontinuities, the next signifant potential advance in this area could be the integration of a knowledge based system to assess discontinuities ahead of mining, incorporating regional assessment and human intuition.

The Rise and Shine Shear Zone is a mineralised low angle deformation zone traceable for at least 7 km through biotite zone schist of the Dunstan Range, central Otago. Rocks from the shear zone obtained from recent drillholes are unweathered and facilitate paragenetic studies. There is a progression of mineral deposition from semiductile foliation-parallel shearing, to subsequent folding, and brittle fracturing. Sheared rocks are dominated by microshears containing fine grained hydrothermal muscovite and rutile that has recrystallised from metamorphic muscovite and titanite respectively. Euhedral pyrite occurs within segregations in the schist and is locally brecciated by the shears.   Arsenopyrite occurs within microshears and is intergrown with hyrothermal muscovite. Fractures within relatively undeformed schist are filled with ankerite, siderite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena and these veinlets also crosscut the microshears. Locally the schist is folded and zones of brecciation, silicification and vein deposition overprint the rock. Vein quartz and albite predominate and arsenopyrite and gold infill breccia matrix and crosscutting veinlets. Sulphide deposition began in the later stages of metamorphism with pyrite deposited in quartz-albite segregations. Subsequent shearing caused brecciation of some grains and accompanied deposition of arsenopyrite ¦ gold and rare sulphides along foliation-parallel microshears. Minor amounts of chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena were then remobilised in ankerite veins that crosscut the shears. In areas of high strain, arsenopyrite was then deposited as euhedral grains in veins and breccias. Synmineralisation deformation caused the brecciation of some grains and gold was deposited infilling fractures in the arsenopyrite. The paragenetic sequence shows gold mineralisation occurred in two distinct sets of structures (semiductile and brittle) that formed at different times in the formation of the shear zone.

Re-commencement of mining in the Western Zone of Beaconsfield Gold Mine following a seismically-induced rockfall fatality in April 2006 required a change of mining method involving drilling and blasting from specially developed drives in the footwall of the orebody. Broken ore is mucked remotely from ore drives on each level. Support in the footwall drives is required to maintain stability during their development and as stopes are retreated, which increases induced stresses and further seismic events are triggered. The paper outlines the challenges involved and methods used to select the footwall drive support to handle both static and dynamic load demand. The importance of load development in the support system, its displacement capacity, the compatibility of support elements and energy absorption capacity of the support system are highlighted. It is usual in any support selection process to ensure that capacity exceeds demand to create a factor of safety. In this case the demands on the system relate to load, displacement and energy absorption and the support system capacity for each must ensure that appropriate factors of safety for each are achieved. The paper shows how these factors are not independent and that selecting a high factor of safety for load can lead to compatibility problems with support elements in the support system.

The Grey River dredge is the first large scale alluvial operation to be permitted under the Mining Act 1971 and the Water and Soil Conservation Act 1967. The experience of Grey River Gold MiningLimited in pursuing these statutory approvals has identified weaknesses and strengths in the present system and problems which need to be resolved. The Company has learnt lessons, which if heeded, will assist future large scale alluvial mining projects.

Coals from the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales treated in the Port Kembla coal preparation plants of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. differ supstantially in their characteristics. Knpwledge of performance not only enables comparison and promotes better control, but also provides the means for predicting results.Evaluation of performance of cleaning equipment has been made in terms of probable error (Ep). Results for Baum jigs, a Chance cone, heavy medium cyclones, and water washing cyclones were examined. The efficiency factors derived from the probable error were applied to the float and sink analysis, mathematically simulating operating conditions. This method was applied to the Balgownie seam.The Balgownie seam lies between the Bulli and Wongawilli seams in the coal measures of the South Coast and mining on a large scale began recently in the Bulli area. It is known locally as the Four Foot seam and exhibits rather difficult washability characteristics, due to a comparatively high middlings content. These properties and the relatively high inherent ash make careful selection of cleaning equipment essential for optimum recovery. The prediction technique is used to determine the possible results when this coal is cleaned in the Port Kembla plants. Predicted values are compared with results from full scale trial washings demonstrating the validity and accuracy of the technique.Applications of result forecasting are listed.

During the course of the major research in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne into the creep characteristics of lead and .its dilute alloys, it has been the practice to prepare the majority of test specimens from rolled strip. From time to time during the progress of the work, certain variables involved in. the rolling of the experimental ingots have been investigated. It is proposed to collect together in this paper the results of these experiments. Some general features relating to the type of deformation produced have been discussed in a previous paper.While it is admitted that the conditions prevailing through this work differ' in some respects from those of industrial rolling practice, it is felt that many of the factors investigated have an important practical significance. The poor reconciliation between the values of estimated and actual grades can cause major economic losses to the mining industry. In a mining operation grade reconciliation is comparing the values of estimated grade calculated in exploration stage with actual grade obtained from blastholes' data. Many different factors affect the degree of reconciliation in a mining operation. In this paper we investigate the factors related to estimated grade which affects the reconciliation process in the exploration stage of the orebody. These factors are the sources of uncertainty in the rest of mine life. In this area the most important factors are inherent variability, statistical uncertainty and systematic uncertainty. A probabilistic model was presented to model each source of uncertainty. The implementation of proposed model was checked and its validity was investigated using real data in an iron open pit mine in Iran.

Advanced Jig Separation of Shredded Plastics The authors have reported that the RETAC jig is very useful in separating relatively low density particles such as plastics, and demonstrated that highly efficient jig separation of plastic components in discarded office machines is possible in pilot-scale tests. To further improve the separation efficiency, a hybrid jig (RETAC jig with air bubbler under the particle bed) which can separate plastics having similar specific gravities using differences in wettability produced by a pretreatment, and a reverse jig (modified RETAC jig for plastics lighter than water) were developed. This paper reviews the separation of shredded plastics using advanced jig separation technology (RETAC, hybrid and reverse jigs). Wettability control of the plastics for the advanced jig separation is also reported.

Mother Nature controls, technical professionals model and miners decide. Decisions to explore, mine and mill. Mine decisions, mine design, planning and scheduling are subject to the quality of models û geological models, geotechnical models, resource models, density models. The closer these models are to reality, the more accurate the predicted outcome. So why is it we delegate the modelling tasks to the most junior and least experienced people? If we insist on this, we need to support them û to provide them with æexperience acceleratorsÆ. Technical mentoring is the most effective way to provide the right information at the right time. When this information (read skills) is supplied at the right time we can inject experience into the quality of our modelling and into our decision- making processes. The objective of this paper is to share those behaviours and manners that foster relationships and create frameworks for skills and experience transfer. Central to this is an understanding of how adults learn, an understanding of the basic rules of mentoring etiquette, and the three keys to building meaningful mentoring relationships. An understanding of adult learning processes and styles provides a structure within which a mentor can understand the learnerÆs perspective. Understanding the world from the learnerÆs point is critical to selecting the right language to engage, teach and transfer skills. Basic rules of mentoring etiquette like timeliness, respect and trust need to be brought into the consciousness so they can be agreed on and monitored to prevent conflicts in cultural and generational norms between the mentor and the learner.Meaningful relationships hinge on the three behaviours: truly listening, rather than just hearing; understanding the technical issues within the WIIFM (whatÆs in it for me?) question; and facilitative behaviour. Stronger and more meaningful technical mentoring relationships within our industry will bridge the generational gap and ensure we can capture and capitalise on the wealth of grey hair experience and develop an informed group of young decision-makers.

The title of this address was selected before I had an opportunity to consider in detail the matters that I would like to discuss. Accordingly, I chose a very broad subject-so broad indeed that it would be foolhardy for me to attempt to deal with more than a few aspects of it. I do not propose to touch. at all on the developments to date of our mining and metallurgical enterprises, beyond paying a sincere tribute'to the skill and enterprise of those who have established an international reputation for Australian mining and metallurgy. I would rather look ahead and discuss certain factors that will play a decisive part in the future development of our mineral resources. I do this in no dogmatic spirit, and I hope that my remarks may lead to discussions which will stimulate action where it is needed.In recent years my colleagues and I have been forced by circumstances to give consideration to problems in the fields of mining and geology, and in process metallurgy, which lie outside the scope of our own research work. People come to us with metallurgical problems because they know of no more appropriate place to go, and it is distressing to have to inform them that it is nobody's job to offer them advice and assistance. I want to suggest to your Institute that it should press strongly for the provision of properresearch facilities for the mining and metallurgical industries, such as aready exist in most enlightened countries. In such countries, those connected with the development of mineral resources are able to obtain information and advice from Geological Surveys, Mines Departments or Bureaux of Mines, which offer far more comprehensive services than are available in this country.Before discussing specific technical problems of the mining and minerals industries, I shall enunciate certain general principles that I believe should be followed in respect to the technical side of the development of all Australian industries. The problem can, I suggest, be considered in three parts-technical education production, and research. I shall confine my remarks mostly to the research aspect, for it is with this that I am most familiar.For the efficient development of any industry in Australia, it is essential firstly that We should learn what is going on abroad, and secondly that we should simultaneously conduct independent research. In the latter sphere the Governmeht'departments and the private companies' or groups of companies should have complementary functions, the former concentrating on problems common to a number of companies or industries, and the latter on their oWn individual problems.
