I have the pleasure of exhibiting samples of the rock in which the South African diamonds are said to occur, for which I am indebted to Mr. Franz Groeger, of Vienna, formerly an assistant of the Royal Imperial Geological Institution, whose account of the general geology of Southern Africa was contained in a recent number of the proceedings of that Institution. The rock is apparently a sort. of tufa, evidently of volcanic origin. Mr. Groeger assured me that it could be seen in situ, bounded by uplifted stratified rocks; and that diamonds had been mined from it, by means of shafts, some distance below the surface. Groeger calls it " greenstone-tufa," and says of it, in the proceedings of the Geological Institution, " it breaks through the younger members of Group III [lower Trias and Jura], .... and crops out in oval masses, filling fissures.....The occurrence of this tufa is not locally limited, but has been traced and proved already over a large territory." Dr. Hunt remarked that the material looked like the trass of the Rhine region. He thought it a new occurrence for diamonds. He believed diamonds to belong to ancient crystalline rocks, although these materials might be brought up by volcanic agency, and the diamonds remain unaltered. In the volcanic rooks of Auvergne, crystals of sapphire, zircon, and spinel are found; and yet no one supposes that these minerals have been generated by volcanic agency. In Part I of this article, published in the September issue of MINING ENGINEERING, Edward S. Frohling and Robert M. McGeorge of Mountain States Mineral Enterprises, Inc., reviewed the general overall financial aspects and methods of raising the necessary capital for developing the mine. In Part 2 of this two-article series, we will present several case histories to show how realistic feasibility studies are used for evaluating the choices and options entailed in mining ventures. Basically, after a potential ore body has been discovered, and the necessary funds obtained for the development of the deposit, the next major problem is one of ascertaining what specifically is to be produced, and the costs of production. The profit potential of the mining venture can then be accurately assessed by the mine owner, operator, or loan officer.

The regular activities of the Institute are financed mainly by income derived from members' dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the amount of these endowments totals more than $684,000. An active effort is being made to increase the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which Henry Krumb is Chairman, and of which the other members are: George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, John V. N. Dorr, Howard N. Eavenson, D. %. Jack- ling, Harvey S. Mudd, Wallace E. Pratt, Milnor Roberts, and Wilfred Sykes. This committee believes that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of evergrowing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light.

Annual production of more than 4,000,000 tons of 0.74 percent copper ore and coincident handling of over 5,000,000 tons of waste at the open-pit mine of Castle Dome Copper Co. near Miami, Ariz. takes a lot of power. Manufacturers have ever co-operated with mining companies in providing the required equipment to suit the problem. Power equipment suppliers have done much to make possible the economic and profitable production of copper from low-grade ores. In the future, as mining operations will necessarily handle even lower-grade ores, the ability of the manufacturer to supply the power and mechanical equipment to produce more metal at a fair and reasonable price will be the good right arm of the miner. About 27,000 tons of concentrate is produced from the 4,000,000 tons of ore.

In situ mining offers a new and proven method of exploiting sedimentary uranium deposits. The feasibility and economic evaluation of exploiting a uranium reserve by either open pit or underground mining should also include a similar study for in situ mining. This report compares the economics of mining several hypothetical uranium deposits at various depths, grades and reserve sizes by open pit and in situ mining. The evaluation process evolved establishing, where possible, common geological and logistical parameters to both methods of mining. The various assumptions that are unique to either open pit or in situ mining were also drafted, where possible, as equal and common functions to be used in each economic evaluation of the reserve models. After the various parameters were defined, they were programmed to an economic analysis of the various hypothetical uranium deposits by the selected mining method. From the vast array of cost evaluations, total capital and operating cost per pound U308 produced, DCF-ROI, and total net profits before State and Federal taxes were selected as the most meaningful results to compare. From the various geologic parameters used, it was determined that the economic viability of a mining venture is most sensitive to a depth-grade thickness ratio. The three selected evaluation products were plotted against the various depth-grade thickness ratios of the hypothetical uranium deposits. The results of the economic cost analyses show in situ mining generally to be a better method to maximize total net profits and to maximize return on investment.

The various modifications of the art of photography have become within the last few years the indispensable allies of every art and science. But, before the introduction of the process which is the subject of this paper, there was, so far as I am aware, no satisfactory means by which certain photographic negatives could be made to yield, without the intervention of the skilled draughtsman, electrotypes suitable for surface-printing. I refer to negatives taken from originals, such as natural objects, or or lithographs, in which the lights and shadows are not represented exclusively by lines and dots, such as can be photo-engraved. The greater usefulness to engineers and manufacturers of electrotypes as compared with lithographs is evident. The electrotypes can be kept indefinitely and used in the production of many thousand copies. They can be duplicated at trifling cost. They can be placed for printing together with the " forms " of type, or included in these, upon an ordinary press. Finally, they are cheap, when made mechanically from a suitable original. Various methods have been adopted for the preparation of such a secondary original (as it might be called) in cases where the first original is unsuitable for photo-engraving. Thus, for instance, portraits have been produced in electrotype from ordinary photographs as follows: A large negative is made of the original (say a carle de visite of a person deceased), and a proof taken, but not " fixed." Over this proof a skilled artist draws the portrait with a pen, producing a picture which resembles a line-engraving. The photographic proof, which has served merely to guide the artist, is now obliterated, and the pen-and-ink drawing is photo-engraved. Electrotypes thus produced often retain the likeness in a wonderful degree, and give spirited and satisfactory pictures. 1 may instance, as examples, which many will recollect, the portraits of our deceased members,

At the conclusion of my paper on the same subject read at the Boston meeting of the Institute, I offered to send some of sample No. 2 to any chemist who wished to analyze it. Eight chemists wrote to me for samples; so far I have received results from five. I give these results in a table (on the following page), together with the results previously obtained: As to the chemists and their methods : K is an iron-works chemist whom I only know by correspondence; lie writes: "No. 27(13.64) was obtained by the method I generally use, as follows : Dissolve 0.8 grams spiegel in hydrochloric acid and a little potassium chlorate, in a half-liter flask. Boil off most of the acid, add ammonia in slight excess, redissolve in acetic acid, using rather more than is really necessary, and then add 8 or 10 grams of sodium acetate and make up to the mark with warm water. Boil hard for fifteen minutes, then allow to settle (cool?), until the liquid reaches the mark, and withdraw 300 C.C. of the nearly clear liquid. Add to this an excess of hydrochloric acid, evaporate to dryness, take up with hydrochloric acid and water, and separate the iron by two precipitations with ammonia (I have often tested the ferric hydrate for manganese, but have never found any, if the separation by ammonia was properly made). Finally, precipitate the manganese as phosphate." Nos. 28, 29 (13.35, 13.07) were by Ford's method." No. 30 (13.50) was by Troilus's method He writes, " I may add the results are quite as good as I expected, although for any element except manganese, they are not close enough for anything like accurate work." In a recent article,1 the authors reported the results of an X-ray investigation on the range of solid solutions that occurs in the iron-oxygen system in the vicinity of the compound FeO, which frequently is called "wüstite." The object of that investigation was primarily to study the unusual type of solid solution phenomena involved in this range. Briefly summarized the results were: 1. The NaCl type of lattice found by earlier workers was confirmed. 2. The lattice dimensions decrease rapidly with decrease in iron content. 3. No alloy that was a homogeneous single phase was ever found at compositions beyond 76.80 per cent Fe, while the theoretical iron content of FeO is 77.73 per cent Fe. 4. Measurements of the densities and lattice constants led to the conclusion that the form of substitution was complex, an FeO group being replaced by oxygen. Such a substitution, of course, is equivalent to removing an iron atom (or ion). The ideal unit cell of FeO can be considered as containing four groups of FeO and, thus, when this type of substitution takes place, there remain in the unit cell three FeO groups and an oxygen, or a total of seven atoms with a gross formula of Fe3O4 instead of the original Fe4O4. 5. This was the only interpretation that would fit the experimental results and at the same time be consistent with (a) the previously determined fact that the FeO lattice is ionic (i, e., consists of Fe++ and O? ions) and (b) the chemical fact that as the oxygen content of the substance increases, ferrous iron becomes oxidized to ferric iron. The experimental results of this investigation are included in Fig. 1. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the limits of this homogeneity range by means of the X-ray structure analysis. This method has been applied frequently to the study of solid solutions by Westgren and his coworkers as well as by other investigators. (written discussion *).-Without doubt the excellent results obtained at Ajo will cause surprise among metallurgists; 75 per cent. average capacity and 80 per cent. extraction during the first year of operation of a plant using a new metallurgical process are figures that speak for themselves. It is obvious that the most troublesome feature of the process is the fouling of solutions. The effects of this are most evident in the electrolytic tank house; but apparently the solutions are so heavily loaded with salts that their dissolving power is also impaired. This is indicated by the fact that copper comes into solution during washing after the leaching of the ore is completed, as shown by the decreasing ratio of acid to copper in the various washes tabulated in Table 4, and also by the fact that 4.9 per cent. of the total copper in the ore remains in the tailings in a soluble form. Even though the extraction in leaching and the ampere efficiency in electrolysis would be benefited by keeping the salts in solution at a lower concentration, it is doubtful whether it would pay to decrease these salts by discarding more electrolyte without other changes in the, process, since this would increase the amount of cement copper produced, which is already very large. If, however, it would not disturb the process otherwise, this object could be accomplished by increasing the range of electrolysis, so that solution going to the tank house would contain, say, 4 per cent. copper and 1 per cent. acid, and the solution returned to the leaching plant 1 1/2 per cent. copper and 4.8 per cent. acid, and by increasing the volume of solution to be discarded, this to be taken from the electrolyzed solution returned to the leaching plant. By this arrangement, more salts will be removed from the system per ton of cement copper produced; and if sufficient solution is discarded to keep the iron content down to 1 1/2 per cent. it would he feasible to recover the copper from

A brief review is given to show that catastrophic oxidation of stainless steel in the presence of lead oxide is similar in many respects to catastrophic oxidation as caused by MoO3 and V2O5, Experimental data are presented to show that lead oxide accelerates the normal oxidation process of stainless steel by chemically altering the normally protective oxide film formed on the base metal. Data are given to show that similar reactions occur during oxidation of stainless steel in the presence of MOO3,and V2O5. THE mechanism by which pure metals oxidize at high temperatures has been the subject of intensive research for many years and much has been accomplished towards understanding the processes involved. The mechanisms by which alloys oxidize have also been investigated, but due partly to the fewer number of investigations and partly to the complexity of the oxide systems present, available knowledge is not as extensive as with pure metals. When oxidation processes are further complicated by atmospheres contaminated with sulfide, halide, or oxide vapors, the knowledge of fundamentals becomes meager or altogether lacking. Thus, it is not surprising to find that the catastrophic oxidation of stainless steels in metal oxide vapors of MOO, and V2O5 is not a well understood phenomenon despite the fact that a number of investigations have been undertaken. The literature in dealing with the subject of catastrophic oxidation is primarily concerned with the effects of MOO3 and V2O5, but does mention that other metal oxide vapors, one of which is lead oxide, appear to promote a similar type of accelerated oxidation. While this latter effect is virtually unknown, the deleterious effect of lead oxide is of considerable commercial importance, as it is believed to be one of the fundamental reasons for exhaust-valve failure in gasoline engines. For this reason studies have been in progress for many years attempting to better understand the mechanism involved. Modern exhaust-valve alloys"2containing 20 to 25 pct Cr plus nickel and/or manganese are in effect high-grade austenitic stainless steels exhibiting ex- cellent oxidation resistance in air at exhaust valve operating temperatures of 1100° to 1700°F; yet these same alloys are prone to corrode during engine service because of the conditions attending their operation. These conditions are such that the valves become coated with deposits of complex lead compounds mainly derived from gasoline additives of tetraethyllead, ethylene dibromide, and ethylene dichloride. Literature searches3-7 and discussions with various investigators show that considerable difference of opinion exists as to the nature of the lead-bearing deposits found on the surface of exhaust valves and the atmospheres to which they are subjected; yet, all seem to generally agree that corrosion, a gradual transformation of alloy to nonmetallic products of corrosion, is a consequence of the presence of lead compounds. This majority opinion seems to be substantiated by laboratory engine tests which show that corrosion does not occur to any appreciable extent when lead-free fuels are used. The first observations of catastrophic oxidation reported in the literature were probably made by pfeil,8 but it was Leslie and Fontana9 who undertook the first detailed study of the phenomenon. Their work was chiefly centered on the acceleration of oxidation which took place when stainless steels containing more than 3 pct Mo were heated in air with restricted circulation. These investigators reported that the presence of other oxides near the surface would further accelerate the rapid oxidation which occurred. While they recognized that the effect was attributable to the presence of molybdenum, it was Rathenau and Meijering" who emphasized the fact that the presence of molybdenum in the alloy was incidental to the presence of MOO3 vapor in the atmosphere surrounding the specimens. The titanium-rich end of the Ti-AI phase diagram has been determined to the compound TiAI3 (62.7 pct Al), thus joining the aluminum-rich portion previously investigated by others and completing the diagram. Micrographic analysis and X-ray diffraction were the chief methods used to determine the phase relationships. THE Ti-Al phase diagram has been investigated as part of a program on titanium phase diagrams for the Wright Air Development Center. Included in the available information concerning the phase relationships in titanium-rich Ti-A1 alloys is a brief statement by Brown' that: "aluminum raises the transformation temperature to 1000°C (183Z°F)." This observation is interesting in that it is the first example of a metallic alloying component raising the transformation temperature of titanium, and consequently widening the field of the a solid solution. Busch and Freyer' presented resistivity data which indicated the formation of titanium-rich solid solutions of 1 and 3 pct A1 alloys prepared by powder metallurgy methods. Duweza found that there is only one other intermediate phase other than the known compound TiA1, (62.7 pct Al). This phase, designated as y, is of variable composition; its crystal structure is of the AuCu type and is therefore based on the composition TiAl (36.02 pct Al). Earlier work on the constitution of the aluminum-rich alloys has been reviewed by Hansen, and need not be discussed here. The tetragonal crystal lattice of TiAl,, as found by Fink, Van Horn, and Budge," was confirmed by Brauer." Recently, Schubert7 has reported that TiA1, is homogeneous within a limited composition range; however, the solubility limits were not given. The Ti-A1 phase diagram as presented in. this paper was determined by micrographic analysis of alloys containing from 1 to 62 pct Al, annealed at and quenched from temperatures between 700" and 1400°C. The phases and phase ranges investigated extend to the compound TiA1, (62.7 pct Al) to join the aluminum-rich end of the system determined by other investigators, thus completing the diagram. Methods of Investigation Preparation of Alloys: Iodide titanium, 99.9+ pct pure, obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co., and high-purity (99.99+ pct) aluminum sheet from the Aluminum Co. of America were used to make up alloy ingots weighing 10 to 20 g. Detailed descriptions of melting techniques have been presented previously for work on the Ti-Mo and Ti-Cb> nd Ti-Si" phase diagrams. Briefly, the melting practice consisted of arc melting an accurately weighed charge in a copper block crucible insert in a non-consumable tungsten electrode furnace, under helium at atmospheric pressure. All ingots were carefully weighed after melting to detect possible losses. Comparison of weight before and after melting showed no appreciable weight changes. Also, chemical analyses were in close agreement with nominal compositions, Table I. The diagram as presented is, therefore, based on nominal compositions. Alloys were prepared having the following nominal aluminum contents: 1 ... 36 (1 pct increments), 38, 40, 41, 42.5, 44, 45, 46, 47.5, 49 . . . 64 (1 pct increments), 67, 70, 80, and 90. Ingots with up to 14 pct A1 were cold-pressed various amounts in order to increase the rate of attaining equilibrium structures on heat treatment. The amount of cold deformation that could be applied decreased with increasing aluminum content, until alloys containing 12 pct A1 or more cracked after only a few percent deformation. A SURVEY of literature reveals the scarcity of experimental evidence relating to work hardening and reannealing of silver.'-'" With the exception of the well-known X-ray investigation of silver and other metals by W. A. Wood? the effect of progressive cold working has not been studied. The determination of thermal stability of silver in the work-hardened state by means of isochronal or isothermal annealing has been confined apparently to very high reductions only. In the survey made, no study was encountered which endeavored to produce a complete picture of the changes in various properties due to cold working and subsequent reannealing. To fill these gaps and to assemble data that could be used for the determination of activation energies and of frequency coefficients of primary recrystallization, a systematic experimental approach, which was developed by one of the authors, has been applied to pure silver. Material and Processing The silver used was Handy and Harman fine silver, with a spectroscopic analysis at the testing stage of Cu, 0.0001 to 0.001 pct; Te, 0.0001; Pb, Si, Ca, Mg, and Mn, traces. The material was supplied in the form of a rod 0.406 in. diam and was converted into test samples according to the procedure condensed in Table I. It should be mentioned that air annealing was adopted to simulate industrial practice, though it was realized that annealing in a neutral gas or in a vacuum would be preferred. The usual precautions have been taken to eliminate any structural changes and property changes resulting from the storage of the samples prior to annealing or testing. Thus the wires were kept at the fully annealed stage, and the final wire drawing, which produced the desired degree of work hardening, was done just prior to the final annealing or testing. During the short waiting period, the samples were kept in a thermosflask filled with ice. Even with these precautions some strain-age-hardening or self-annealing could occur. To test such a possibility, wires of different reductions were prepared in the manner adopted and portions of them were immediately tested. The remaining portions were similiarly tested after different periods of storage, both at room and melting-ice temperature. Within experimental error, all samples obtained from a wire of a given percentage of reduction yielded identical values. This result qualified the material for further tests and interpretations, because it showed that either strain-age-hardening and self-annealing were absent, or that these effects fully balanced each other. The final annealing was carried out in an electric resistance furnace automatically controlled to within a 10°F. It was realized that the temperature fluctuations were greater than desired for this type of work. TO diminish the errors due to fluctuations of temperature, the hot junction of the thermocouple was placed as close to the samples as possible; the time of soaking was reduced to 15 min; and the number of samples annealed at different temperatures was increased. It will be seen from Table I that some tests were performed on the same material at rising temperature. These will be discussed elsewhere. Room temperature testing was limited to the determination of some of the mechanical properties that are known to be additive in a degree sufficient to be used for indirect study of the kinetics of the reannealing process, Tensile tests, carried out on a manually operated J. Camillon machine, accurate to within permitted the determination of the ultimate stress (U.S.1 and of the 2 in. elongation, (A,). This paper presents an experimental verification of numerical solutions of the differential equation describing the transient flow of an ideal gas through a porous material including gas slip effects. Several experiments previously proposed by one of the authors are described together with the correlation of the experimental results with the numerical solutions. Excellent agreement is shown between experiment and theory, thus demonstrating the validity of both the basic assumption made in the derivation of the differential equation and of the numerical solutions of the differential equation. INTRODUCTION In a recent paper,' one of the authors has discussed a numerical solution of the differential equation describing the unsteady flow of an ideal gas through a porous material. This paper was primarily concerned with the effect of gas slip on the flow behavior. In steady state measurements, Klinkenberg2 and others have observed that the apparent gas permeability Kn of a porous material may be expressed as a linear function of the reciprocal average pressure 1/P of the form, ka = b + m/P........(1) where the intercept b is a constant for a given porous material and the slope m is a constant for a given porous material-gas combination. Aronofsky1 assumed that Equation (1) could be used to describe transient flow if P was replaced by the average pressure in an infinitesimal volume element. A number of numerical solutions of the resultant differential equation were presented and specific flow experiments were proposed as a means of testing the numerical solutions. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the results of several of these experiments and the correlation of the experimental data with the results of the numerical analysis. Reference should be made to the previous paper' for details of the mathematical and numerical analysis. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A simplified schematic drawing of the experimental apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. An 8.89 cm diameter limestone core of length L = 14.82 cm was mounted in a conventional rubber sleeve permeameter cell. The external sleeve pressure in this cell was maintained equal to 500 psig during all experimental tests, thus permitting only longitudinal flow through the core. One end of the core, X = L, was connected to an adjustable cavity of volume V as well as a pressure gauge or manometer. The other end of the core, X = 0, was connected to a Nullmatic pressure regulator which was in turn connected to a nitrogen cylinder or vacuum pump. In each experiment, the core and adjacent dead volume were charged with nitrogen to a uniform gas pressure P1. The pressure at X = 0 was then suddenly raised or lowered to a constant pressure P, and the resulting pressure buildup or pressure decline at X — L was recorded as a function of the time. The porosity + and the permeability constants m and b were determined using the transient method which was suggested by the results of the numerical analysis and which was described in the earlier paper.' The following average values for these constants were obtained as a result of 19 separate evaluations: 171 -0.259 2 0.005 md-atm; b = 0.374 5 0.008 md; and F = 0.098 ± 0.005*. It should be noted that in order that transient phenomena will be slow enough to be observed conveniently, it is desirable to use a porous material of very low permeability, e.g., less than I md. Moreover, it is in this low permeability range that the gas slip effects are most significant. Thus, such a low permeability sample is very suitable for use in an experimental verification of the numerical solutions previously described.

CADWALLADER EVANS JR. has long been a leading figure in the anthracite mining industry and one of Pennsylvania's prominent citizens. He is, in fact, a native son, having been horn in Pittsburgh on Sept. 17, 1880. At Lehigh, from which he graduated in 1901 with the degree of Mechanical Engineer, Tom Girdler was a classmate, and both were active in football affairs. Going hack to Pittsburgh, he got his first job as trouble shooter for the Oliver Iron & Steel Co. A year later he entered the coal industry, getting a job with the Blaine Coal Co. as inspector of construction and later was superintendent of the Blaine mine at Elizabeth. Pa.

The external corrosion of casing is one of the most important problems facing the present day production man. A 1953 NACE report' estimated the annual cost of casing corrosion at $2,200,000 in 22 fields studied. The fields represented only 10 per cent of the wells in the United States. It was significant that 77 per cent of the failures reported were due to external corrosion. A variety of means for combatting the casing corrosion problem have been discussed in papers such as the NACE survey' mentioned previously. No attempt to revicw these will be made in this paper. Thc scope of this paper has been limited to a discussion of the following major items: (I) an instrument for studying external electrolytic corrosion; (2) use of this instrument to determine the quantity of protective current required to prevent corrosion of casing; and (3) problem of accelerated external corrosion of the oil string at the base of the surface string. ELECTROCHEMICAL MECHANISM OF CORROSION It IS gcncrally belleved that one major cause of external corrosion is the existence of electrolytic cells operating between various formation waters. A theoretical discussion of the role of earth potentials in casing corrosion has been presented by L. de Witte and F. J. Radd.2 A brief picture of the electrolytic corrosion action between two differcnt formations (A and B) is presented in Fig. I. This picture is a review to many but is given to insure clarity. In the anode area, oxidation takes place as iron ions go into solution in formation A as a product of corrosion. In the cathode area. reduction takes place and hydrogen atoms are formed at the boundary between the pipe and formation B. The flow of electrons. as indicated. is into the pipe at the anode or corroding area and out of the pipe into the formation at the cathode. In order to conform with regulations of this journal, the flow of a conventional current (I! is also indicated in this sketch. All subsequent references will be to this so-called conventional current flow and will be indicated by the symbol (I). As this action takes place the layer of hydrogen developed on the cathode offers a resistance to the flow of current in the cell. It is said (hat the cathode has been polarized. This polarizing film can be rcmoved by addition of a so-called dcpolarizing agent which reacts with and removes this hydrogen film. Such an agent must be present in ordcr for this corrosion reaction to go at a rate sufficient to cause a severe corrosion problem. The two common depolarizing agents are: (I) oxy-sen. which readily reacts with hydro gen to form water, and (2) certain bacteria which use atomic hydrogen as part of their life process. It is not difficult to explain the presence of these agents. Oxygen may be present in some very shallow formations. Sulfate reducing bacteria are found to exist in nearly any ground where mud pits might be dug. THE CASING POTENTIAl-PROFILE Instrumentation A sketch of the equipment* uscd in determining casing potential profiles is shown in Fig. 2. The tool is run in the hole using a hoist truck with a three-conductor cable. This tool must be run with tubing and rods out of the hole and should be run with the flow line disconnected. By proper choice of electrode size it can be run in any size casing. The electrodes must be run in an open hole or a hole filled with oil. Measurements cannot be made while immersed in water. The tungsten carbide-tipped knives serve as the electrical robes and arc spaced 25 ft apart. The potential difference along a 25-ft section of casing is measured with a potentinmeter to an accuracy of about 5 mv. Current flowing in the pipe can then

Beam-columns with continuous or discontinuous transverse and angular loads and elastic restraints are represented mathematically in a manner corresponding to finite-element mechanical models. Solutions for linearly elastic cases are accomplished by direct recursion-equation elimination of unknowns, and for cases involving nonlinear loads and supports, by repeated trial-and-adjustment of complete elastic-type solutions. Five practical applications are presented by which various capabilities of the general method are illustrated. The examples include simulation of a pipeline launching and the bending and collapse of a conductor pipe in deep-water drilling operations. INTRODUCTION The diversified and complex operations being conducted in support of the production of offshore oil have produced a wide variety of new problems in structural mechanics. Many of these problems cannot be solved by conventional analytical or experimental approaches and have therefore stimulated inquiry into new methods of solution. It is the purpose of this paper to give a brief description of an analytical method for solving nonlinear beam-column problems and to illustrate the generality of the method by applying it to several problems related to offshore operations. Although the data for all of the examples are artificial, the cases discussed will be recognized as being based on actual situations. DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The analytical approach which is to be described stems from research on offshore foundations, in particular, the study of lateral-load behavior of foundation piles. The method represents a generalization of a technique which was suggested by Gleser' and extended by Focht and McClelland2 and Reese and Matlock." To maintain generality and therefore versatility in the method, a considerable variety of input data is considered. Fig. 1 illustrates the various types of loads and restraints which might be applied to a short segment of a beam. Each of the terms illustrated in the figure is shown acting in a positive sense. Capital letters are used to designate concentrated quantities whereas the corresponding lower-case symbols indicate effects which are distributed in some way along the length of the beam. The transverse loads and the elastic restraints may be divided into two classes: (1) loads Q and q and springs S and s, which act normal to the axis of the beam, and (2) couples T and t and rotational springs R and r, which act in an angular sense. In addition, there is an axial force P which may be constant or may vary along the length of the beam. The bending stiffness of the beam (the product EI of the modulus of elasticity and the moment of inertia) is designated by the symbol F. The assumptions of conventional elementary beam theory provide the basis for the present method. Among these are the neglect of shearing and axial deformations and the limiting of consideration to straight beams of symmetrical cross-section. Lateral deflections are considered to be small compared to original dimensions. A deformed element of such a beam is shown in Fig. 2a. The curvature of the beam is approximated by the second derivative of the deflection y with respect to distance x along the beam. It is assumed that the material of the beam is linearly elastic and therefore the relation of Eq. 1 between curvature and bending moment M is the ordinary expression from elementary beam theory. A generalized beam element is shown in Fig. 2b. The element has been deflected in a positive direction by an amount y and tilted through a small positive angle dy/dx. The various loads and elastic restraint reactions are detailed in the figure. Temporarily, only distributed effects are considered; provision for concentrated loads and restraints will be made subsequently. (written discussion).-When a business concern hires an office boy, it takes on the first bright-appearing young chap to apply and pays him the prevailing rate of wages. One of the chief tasks the .office boy is supposed to be competent to perform, is to clean out the office. The manager of the business is highly competent in many lines, but for some reason lacks the ability to keep the office clean. To the steel man, it would seem that manganese is the office boy, and it is purchased just as found and offered to the purchasing agent. The steel mill is competent to perform many functions on a grand scale and with wonderful efficiency, but it is unable to make real steel. It is the function of the office boy, manganese, to do this. It is open to serious doubt if steel mill operators have ever taken seriously the metallurgy of the preparation of crude manganese. It has merely been found that some usable crude manganese may be obtained by running certain manganese ores through an iron furnace when not busy on anything else, or remote from iron ore, or with a lining that is about gone. It is, however, an entirely unwarranted assumption that the metallurgy of manganese has been worked out, or that the supplies of usable raw ore must be limited to materials of some specified analysis. There was a time when ores of copper, lead and zinc, for example, had to be rich and of specified analysis, to be usable, but the commercial raw materials of today bear little resemblance to such ores of the past. The discussions of manganese that I have seen are based on the assumption that the metallurgy of manganese is fully established and that the only usable manganese raw materials are of the kind used today. These discussions contain another error, not so much of statement, but of implication-that the tonnages of manganese materials in the United States are so much in this state and so much in that. When it requires a period of years and the expenditure of millions of dollars for a competent mining company to explore thoroughly a few acres of mining ground, is it not absurd to say that there are so many hundred tons of manganese ore in a certain state? This fact is not apt to be known fully in 10,000, years. I do not charge the mining engineers. who are on record, of making misstatements, because they merely say that so much

At very low concentrations, carbon dissolves interstitially in molybdenum resulting in a linear expansion of lattice parameter with increase of carbon in solid solution. Geometrical consideration of the relative size of carbon atom to size of interstice approximately predicts the observed volume expansion. THE element carbon, occurring in molybdenum, either as an unavoidable impurity, or purposely added, markedly affects the mechanical properties of molybdenum. Several investigators1-" have noted the occurrence of molybdenum carbide at the grain boundaries of cast molybdenum, and Fischer and Rengstorff' have shown that this intergranular constituent can induce intergranular brittleness. The appreciable change, with temperature, of the solid solubility of carbon in molybdenum, found by Few and Manning," suggests other important effects upon mechanical properties. Finally the relative atom diameters of carbon and molybdenum (the ratio of atom diameters is 0.59) are indicative, by analogy with iron (ratio of carbon atom diameter to iron atom diameter is 0.65), of a possible interstitial solid solution. If carbon dissolves intersti-tially in molybdenum, anelastic effects and age-hardening effects, similar to those observed in other body-centered cubic metals, could be expected. However, from the work of Sykes, Van Horn, and Tucker," it might be inferred that carbon forms only a substitutional solid solution with molybdenum. These considerations made it desirable to study the effect of carbon on the lattice parameter of molybdenum in greater detail than heretofore. All heat treating was done in a high temperature furnace7 built specifically for heat treatment of molybdenum. The temperatures and times of heat treatment were determined from the a solubility limit for the Mo-C system." These heat treatments were carried out in argon which was purified with respect to N, and H.!0." Purification of the argon was accomplished by passing the argon over hot (750°C) titanium and then through a magnesium perchlorate drying tower. As many as six samples were run concurrently and quenched at different times without interrupting the furnace cycle. Both the purity of the furnace atmosphere and ability to quench samples from any temperature up to 4000 °F were of prime importance in the successful heat treatment of samples for the lattice parameter investigation. Carbon Analysis The Leco Combustion apparatus was used for carbon analysis. This apparatus is capable of an accuracy of & 0.003 pct for a 1 g sample in the range below 0.10 pct. However, it is felt the degree of accuracy is somewhat better than this limit in view of the consistency evident by cross checking a number of determinations. The Battelle Analytical Laboratory consistently reported check results to within k 0.001 pct C. X-ray Measurements The molybdenum wire specimens (20 mils) were carefully filed down to about 12 mils and then etched with nitric acid to 8 mils. Carbon analyses were made on specimens before reduction in size; however, since there was no evidence of surface carburization, it is probable that the carbon was uniformly distributed throughout the sample. The resultant specimens were strain free and small enough to minimize the error in the lattice parameter determinations due to X-ray absorption. Diffraction patterns were obtained with a Debye-Scherrer powder camera 114.59 mm in diam utilizing the Straumanis type asymmetrical film mounting. Nickel-filtered copper. Ka radiation and zirconium-filtered molybdenum Ka radiation were used. Line positions on the film were measured with a traveling microscope equipped with a vernier scale permitting measurement to 0.001 cm. The average of five readings was used to determine the position of each line. The lattice parameter for each specimen was determined from the data by the extrapolation method of Bradley and Jay, Y.e., the intercept at 90" of the straight line obtained by plotting the apparent lat-

The basic density equation originally dericed ' to predict the increase in density of a compact of spherical particles with the progressive deformation at the points of contact has been further modified to include the yield strength of the material. This has been done by assuming that the contact areas grow to stable sizes under a fixed stress which is equal to three times the yield strength. The final equation has the form: where Do and D me the initial and final bulk densities of the compact, u is the applied pressure, and Y is the yield strength of the material. This equation was tested with the data obtained on spheres of lead, K-Monel, and sapphire. The calculated yield strength t~alues for lead and sapphire are within the range of values reported in the literature. A few of the earliest hot pressing models proposed to explain the mechanism by Murray, Livey, and williams2 and then by McClelland3 are based on a plastic flow mechanism. However, more recent investigations suggest that the overall densification process is a combination of several mechanisms, such as particle rearrangement, fragmentation, plastic flow, and stress-enhanced diffusional creep. While fragmentation and particle rearrangement are considered to be responsible for the densification in the early stages,"475 it has been concluded that the final stages of hot pressing are controlled by stress-enhanced diffusional creep.516 The manner in which the densification takes place, i.e., by fragmentation, particle rearrangement, plastic flow, or stress-enhanced diffusional creep, would depend upon the type of material, the temperature, and the stress level used during the hot-pressing experiments. Metal compacts can be expected to have a much greater contribution from plastic flow than ceramic oxides. Also, plastic flow would be a significant contributing factor to densification at high temperatures and high stresses. Most of these works, directed towards elucidation of densification mechanism, have dealt with kinetics of the process. The results of most of the authors vary from one another and they have proposed either new empirical or semiempirical equations to fit their data. The densification rate was found to vary with the type of the powder, shape and size of the powder, initial packing density of the compact, and a few other factors such as rate of heating, pressure, and so forth. Beyond the initial stages, the densification process has been considered to be as time-dependent flow, controlled by a diffusional process, e.g., Nabarro-Herring creep. Palm our, Bradley, and johnson' have attempted to use modified creep rate equations to interpret the data of densification under hot-pressing conditions. Beyond the initial stages, however, the densification would be controlled by a process depending upon the temperature, pressure, and size of the powders. It is the authors' belief that such densification cannot be exclusively controlled by a single process and so attempts should be made to study some observable phenomenon like microstructure, yield strength, and so forth. The emphasis of this work has been toward studying the densification problem from a more fundamental point of view. Some of the principal variables, like initial packing density, mode of packing, and size of the powders, have been controlled to a great extent. The total strain produced on pressure application (instantaneous) in such a case can be considered to be due to plastic and elastic deformation. The elastic component of the strain can be determined by decreasing the load to the initial value. The strain remaining then can be correlated with the contact areas produced by deformation and the corresponding applied load. In a previous paper,' the possible deformation behavior of spheres in a compact has been theoretically analyzed and experimentally tested. The change in contact area radius a relative to the particle radius R was related to the bulk density and the bulk strain for simple and systematic modes of packing. Tt was found that a density equation relating the above parameters can be represented by: where D and Do are the bulk densities of the compact at any value of a/R and a/R = 0, respectively. This basic equation should hold for any material as it was derived from geometrical considerations alone. An attempt has been made in this work to include the yield strength in the above density equation, so that a knowledge of the properties of any material can be used in predicting the densification behavior during the hot-pressing process. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATTONS The deformation of two spheres in contact under a static load can be compared to the deformation occurring between a hard spherical indentor and the flat face of a softer metal. Tt has been shown theoretically by both ~encky~ and lshlinskyg and experimentally by ~abor" that, for a material incapable of appreciable work hardening, the mean pressure required to produce plastic yielding (for deformation occurring between flat face and a hemispherical indentor) is approximately equal to three times the elastic limit, Y, of the material (in tension or compression experiments).
