BRASS rod for use in automatic screw machines is one of the major products of the brass mills. A large tonnage is consumed each year in the manufacture of an endless variety of finished articles and parts for assembly into other products. The machines that do this work have been developed to a high degree of efficiency, and their manufacturers are still striving for higher production speeds. This development has brought with it a demand for brass rod to meet the increasingly difficult machining conditions. This paper is a report of the results of tests undertaken in an effort to obtain a measure of the effects of such variables as lead content, microstructure and cold work on the machinability of brass rod. It is realized that the term "machinability" has never been well defined. Power, finish and tool life all should have a place in such a. definition. In practice it is sometimes found necessary to sacrifice some of these in order to obtain a rod that will not tend to throw up a burr, or will give a burr which is easily tumbled off. Again a specially stiff rod may be necessary because of long overhang from the chuck or a rod of special characteristics is needed to take a given broaching operation without chattering. It is only through an understanding of the effect of basic mill operations on the machinability of the rod that such problems as these may be solved most economically. It is hoped that this paper, together with the discussion it may evoke, will prove to be a basis for such an understanding.

C.-From being one of the most maligned of metals-a veritable bugaboo-cadmium has almost overnight become respectable, though its slender claim to respectability rests almost wholly on the possibility of its substitution for tin. Preliminary to any campaign for such substitution, particularly for enforced substitution, the possible supply of cadmium should he determined as closely as possible; for that reason the statistical inquiry of which this paper embodies the results was undertaken. Production Cadmium is marketed in two forms, as metallic cadmium, in sticks or bars, and as cadmium sulfide, the pigment. The metal has found its greatest field of use in this country as a component of an easily fusible alloy that is used in automatic fire extinguishers. F many years it has been suspected that a correlation existed between pits produced by etching and the density of dislocations in crystals. In 1953, the interest in this correlation was greatly stimulated when Vogel et al' demonstrated a 1:l correlation between etch pits and dislocations in low angle grain boundaries of germanium. About two years ago, the author began attempts to produce etch pits at dislocation sites in zinc mono-crystals. These attempts met with success a year or so ago,' and since that time a survey has been made of the etch pit patterns that are associated with various modes of deformation in zinc monocrystals. Unfortunately, the etching technique that will be described is too delicate for use as an accurate quantitative tool. Nevertheless, it has been of considerable assistance in clarifying the structure of plastically deformed crystals. Technique Many attempts were made to produce etch pits in high purity zinc crystals. It was found that several techniques would produce surface grooves at grain boundaries that had misorientation angles greater than about l°, but no technique was successful for boundaries with smaller angles. Among the things that were tried were: electrolytic CrO, (both etching and polishing concentrations), HNO, in various water and alcohol solutions, dilute HC1, many 0-0,-Na,SO, solutions, Cr0,-HC1 solutions, picral, electrolytic Na,S,O,, and electrolytic NaOH and KOH. A few attempts to use cathodic sputtering and thermal etching were also made.

BRIEFLY, the ore body of the Bagdad Copper Corp., Bagdad, Ariz., is a monzonite porphyry carrying copper values fairly evenly distributed from the surface down through the primary zone. Tabular in shape, the ore body extends over several hundred acres. The oxidized zone averages about 60 ft thick and assays about 0.50 per cent copper. Under this is the chalcocite zone, or the zone of secondary enrichment, which averages about 100 ft in thickness and assays about 1.4 per cent copper. Under this zone lies the primary zone which extends in places to a known depth of about 150 ft and averages in grade about 0.60 per cent copper. Several years ago the block-caving method of extracting the ore from the chalcocite zone was installed. Then it was necessary to draw only about 250 to 300 tons per day, the capacity of the old milling plant. Early in 1943 the new 2500-ton concentrator was put into production. Drawing ore from the developed stopes in sufficient tonnage to furnish the mill at capacity proved unsuccessful in more ways than one. First, drawing the ore at an accelerated rate caused a large amount of dilution, there-by lowering the grade, and also caused funneling through to the surface. The surface material was detrimental to milling metallurgy and development of these stopes was costly per ton of ore extracted. The grade of ore decreased. making it impossible to maintain a mill head of over 0.9 per cent copper. The

WHEN one solid phase is generated from another, fixed and rational orientation relationships are observed to subsist between the parent and the new crystal. The principle has been proposed' that the relationships obtaining between the same two phases are identical whatever the type of phase change involved, or whichever of the phases may act as parent. Many types of phase changes have been studied: allotropic transformations in pure metals, precipitation from solid solutions, eutectoid decompositions, peritectic reactions, the formation of oxide layers, and others.2 Phase layers generated by diffusion of one metal into another constitute an additional type of reaction. This report provides new data on the orientation relationships occurring between , phase layers formed by diffusion, in the Cu-Zn system, § and furnishes further evidence in support of the principle. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Cu-Zn system is especially suitable for these studies since the high vapor pressure of Zn provides an opportunity readily to create one phase poorer in Zn upon a parent phase richer in Zn by removing Zn by vaporization, or to reverse this process by adding Zn from Zn vapor; e.g., the beta phase can be found as a layer upon gamma by dezincing, or gamma can be found on beta by addition of Zn from Zn vapor. Since orientation relationships are to be sought, requiring crystals large enough for orientation determinations, it is convenient to prepare single crystals or large grains of the parent phase. The samples were prepared from oxygen-free high-conductivity copper and Horse Head zinc by melting under a borax flux in a graphite crucible. Large crystals of beta brass were grown by the strain-anneal method, in plates sectioned from the cast ingots, by the following procedure. Rockwell-hardness indents were made at I cm. intervals-and with various loads, then the plates were annealed for .4 days at 700°C. in Nichrome boxes packed with beta-brass chips and graphite. Surface layers were removed by grinding and etching to a depth of about 1.0 mm., and individual grains were cut out. Crystals of alpha and gamma brass were prepared by freezing, by lowering a graphite crucible at speeds less than one inch per hour through a furnace held at a constant temperature above the melting point. Single crystals were cut out with a jeweler's saw, ground, polished and etched. Care was taken to remove cold worked layers from the finished crystals

Introduction A close relationship exists between the geologic investigation and the stability analysis of the slopes of an open pit mine. One significant result of this relationship is that the stability analysis is no better than the assessment of pertinent geologic factors that enter into the analysis. In some slope stability problems the engineering solution becomes obvious once the geologic framework is established. In other cases, establishing the geologic framework is only the first stage in the process of analysis. However, even in these cases the geology should not be neglected once the analysis is made. The geology should be periodically reviewed when new slopes are excavated. This will help ensure that the basic assumptions for the analysis have not changed and will permit changes when new conditions are encountered. In recent years improved methods of stability analysis have been accompanied by advances in laboratory testing techniques and new knowledge of the shear strength of rock discontinuities. At the same time there have been improvements in field geological descriptions. As more experience is gained in analyzing and predicting the stability of rock slopes, the importance of certain geologic factors has become more apparent. Some of these factors were described in a paper given at the Open Pit Mining Symposium in Johannesburg, South Africa in September 1970 (I). This paper includes many of the points covered at that meeting but with additional emphasis on the significance of the major geologic structures. Other papers given at the South African symposium also considered geological and hydrogeological factors in slope stability analysis (2) (3) (4) (5) (6). This paper first describes the approach to a slope stability problem including assessment of the relative roles of field geology studies, laboratory testing, stability analyses, and continued slope monitoring studies. Next, is described a framework which has been found useful for classifying or separating the several types of slope stability problems encountered in open pit mines. The principal geologic factors in slope stability problems in rock are discussed and brief comments are made on how these factors distinguish stability problems in rock slopes from those normally encountered in soil slopes. The over-riding control of major geologic structures, especially faults, in most slope stability problems is emphasized. The manufacture of steel rails in the United States upon a large scale may be roughly dated from the years 1875-76, and the same years witnessed an active movement among the railroads toward the adoption of heavier and improved patterns. In this movement each road was a law unto itself, and the "personal equations " of some scores of engineers were so freely injected into the calculations that patterns were multiplied in the most absurd and mischievous manner, until at length the burden upon the mills became wellnigh unendurable, and called forth a vigorous protest in Mr. Holley's paper,* read before the Institute in February, 1881. There were then regularly manufactured in the various mills of the United States, no less than 119 different patterns of steel rails, subject to current order, of which 64 per cent. were embraced under five weights per yard. Commenting upon these and other figures there given, Mr. Holley stated as the primary object of his paper, " to show that,, while this multiplication of rail-patterns is an annoyance and an expense to rail-makers, it is a source of immense loss to railway companies." Since 1876 the increase in gross annual tonnage upon our leading lines has been very great, and has been accompanied by an increase of wheel-loads and running-speeds. As the average weight of the rails of 1876 was by no means excessive, the growing deman Is of traffic have slowly driven the roads toward stiffer sections, inaugurating a movement that now promises to become epidemic. In 1876 a 67-pound rail was a first-class equipment; to-day everything under 75 pounds is light, and many 80's are coming into use. European practice has long been heavier than ours; in part because the higher cost of sleepers has led to an average of 3-feet spacing, instead of two-feet as with us. The old 84-pound double-header, and Sandberg's 80- and 89-pound rails, respectively 51/4 inches and 591/2 inches high, are reported common on English roads; and he is strongly advocating the general adoption of the 100-pounder shown in Fig. 7, with what success I have not learned, except that the Belgian government has ordered a lot. Mr. Sandberg points out the undesirability of frequent changes of pattern, and the recent rapid growth in traffic-requirements; prognosticates a continuance of this

The year 1938, with a production of 58,784,250 bbl. from 18,790 wells shows a slight recession from the high peak of oil production reached the previous year, when slightly over 68 million barrels of oil was marketed. The previous high peak had been reached in 1917 with a total of 45,451,000 bbl. Another still earlier peak was reached in 1904, during which year slightly less than 5 million barrels was produced and sold. The production of gas, on the other hand, probably reached a new peak during 1938 with a total of over 60 billion cubic feet. This peak, however, was not the highest peak, for during the year 1908 over 80 billion cubic feet was produced. Between these two high peaks the production dropped down to 16 billion cubic feet in the year 1921. The number of wells drilled during the year totals 1569. This figure is somewhat lower than the figure given in several trade journals because it does not include wells that were deepened or recompleted in a different geological horizon. Nearly three-fourths (or 1107) of the total number of wells were completed as commercial oil wells (915 in western and 192 wells in eastern Kansas). The commercial gas wells completed number 50, of which 4 are in eastern Kansas and 46 in western Kansas. The remaining 412 completions include 130 dry holes in eastern and 282 dry holes in western Kansas. Based on daily potential capacity, the new discoveries of the year accounted for 70,000 bbl. of new oil for eastern and 1,220,000 bbl. of new oil for western Kansas. It is interesting to note in this connection that the number of wells completed in the state rose gradualIy to a first peak in 1904, when 2782 were drilled. The number dropped off rapidly to 368 three years later, but rose to the second and highest peak in 1918 when 4671 wells were completed. In the period between 1904 and 1912 more gas wells than oil wells were completed. Between the high peak of 1918 and the somewhat lower peak in 1937, the low point was reached during 1931, with the completion of only 470 wells. In the matter of new pools discovered, Kansas again ranks high. Burgess was transferred on January 1 to the new Defense Materials Procurement Agency as strategic materials specialist. In May the Region III headquarters of this organization was moved to London. L. C. Campbell was elected president of National Coal Assn. Mr. Campbell, who has been a member of the National's Board of Directors and Executive Committee for many years, is vice-president of the Coal Div. of the Eastern Gas & Fuel Associates and in charge of their extensive mining operations in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky. Vern H. Christoph has been transferred to Panama Canal Co., Marine Bureau, Navigation Division, Port Captains Office, as an admeasurer at Cristobal, Canal Zone. Eugene Cline, recently graduated from the University of Kentucky, has been employed by Pond Creek Pocahontas Coal Co., at Evanston, Ky. Sanford S. Cole, assistant manager of research at the Titanium div. of National Lead Co., received the Alumni Citation from his alma mater, Alfred University, Alfred, N. Y. This was in recognition of outstanding achievements and services in the field of ceramics which have brought honor to the institution. U. K. Custred, recently graduated from University of Kentucky, and may be reached now at Box 87, Monterey, Tenn. Robert E. Dwyer, executive vice-president of Anaconda since 1940, was recently elected president of this company and its subsidiaries, Chile Copper Co., Chile Exploration Co., and Andes Copper Mining Co. TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND THE MEMBERS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS GENTLEMEN: Herewith are submitted the report of the Treasurer for the year 1936 and the reports for the same year of the following committees: Admis¬sions, Membership, Papers and Publications, Library, Student Relations, and MINING AND METALLURGY. To these reports you are referred for details of the year's activities. Finances.-Income for the year was $173,091 including an appropria¬tion of $2500 from the Rocky Mountain Fund earmarked to defray expense for official visits to western Sections and student societies. This compares with $141,754 in 1935 and exceeds by more than $50,000 the income of 1933 wherein the low point during the depression was reached. The major items of increase were: $6,700 from current dues; $10,600 in initiation fees and dues of newly enrolled members; $10,800 from the monthly magazine MINING AND METALLURGY. Sundry small declines were offset by minor increases. Expenditures for the year totaled $176,007 compared with $148,361 in 1935. Major increases were $5,700 for MINING AND METALLURGY; $4,000 for TRANSACTIONS and TECHNICAL PUBLICATIONS; $1,500 for meetings; $1,300 for Local Section appropriations; $6,500 for Technical Division expense; $5,000 for Increase of Membership expense; and $2,500 for visits to Local Sections and educational institutions. Comment on several of these items will appear under subsequent heads. Net deficit for the year was $2,915, this sum being made up from the accumulated surplus. It is interesting to observe that the net excess of income over outgo for the five-year period 1932-1936, inclusive, is $760. Membership and Dues.-During the year there was a net gain in membership, including Members, Associates, Junior Members and Junior Foreign Affiliates of 755 (from 7116 to 7871). In addition there was a gain of 616 in Student Associates (from 1004 to 1620). Taking account of small losses totaling 5 in the other grades, the net increase was 1366 bringing the total to 9607, the highest figure reached in the history of the Institute except at the end of 1921 when the total was 9850. Coke with low phosphorus content is required by some of the electrometallurgical and chemical plants recently attracted to the Pacific Northwest by the hydroelectric power available from Bonneville and Grand Coulee dams. Shipping such coke into the area from eastern points involves a high freight charge, and during wartime consumes precious rail and ship-bottom space, so it is highly desirable to produce coke from the coking coals of Washington to meet the requirements of these industries. Although coke has been made from Washington coals since 1884, little has been known about their phosphorus contents or about the extent to which phosphorus could be reduced by cleaning, An investigation was undertaken, therefore, to determine the manner in which phosphorus occurs in the coking coals of Washington and its amenability to removal by ordinary coal-washing methods. Previous Work Phosphorus is a deleterious element in coke used for numerous metallurgical processes, including the production of pig iron, yet comparatively little published information is available on the occurrence and elimination of phosphorus in any of the coals of this country. A variation from 0.009 to 0.062 per cent phosphorus in various horizons of the Pittsburgh bed in the Connellsville region of Pennsylania has been reported,' and a reduction in phosphorus content from 0.020 per cent in the raw coal to 0.018 per cent in the washed coal was obtained in washing coal from the same bed in the Pittsburgh area;2 the latter figures represent average analyses for a year's operation of the washery on about 800,000 tons of coal. A reduction in phosphorus content from 0.018 to 0.011 per cent in washing coal from the Pittsburgh bed at another washery was observed, and the same report provides data on the phosphorus reduction obtained by separating 10 other coals on a bath of 1.35 specific gravity.3 European investigators have been especially active in correlating phosphorus content with petrographic analysis; fusain and durain generally contain the highest percentage of phosphorus, but this relationship is not universal.4 Some of these investigators have found that phosphorus is removed in the coal-washing process,5 but others have observed that the clean coal contained as much or even more phosphorus than the raw coal.'

The samples were prepared from oxygen-free high-conductivity copper and Horse Head zinc by melting under a borax flux in a graphite crucible. Large crystals of beta brass were grown by the strain-anneal method, in plates sectioned from the cast ingots, by the following procedure. Rockwell-hardness indents were made at I cm. intervals and with various loads, then the plates were annealed for 4 days at 700°C. in Nichrome boxes packed with beta-brass chips and graphite. Surface layers were removed by grinding and etching to a depth of about 1.0 mm., and individual grains were cut out. Crystals of alpha and gamma brass were prepared by freezing, by lowering a graphite crucible at speeds less than one inch per hour through a furnace held at a constant temperature above the melting point. Single crystals were cut out with a jeweler's saw, ground, polished and etched. Care was taken to remove cold-worked layers from the finished crystals

Development in the upper Texas Gulf Coast during 1944 resulted in the discovery of 19 new fields as compared with 11 during 1943. These discoveries include 10 oil fields, one dry gas field, and eight gas-condensate fields. Drilling During the year 590 wells were drilled as compared with 418 drilled during 1943. Of these operations, 485 wells were drilled in proven fields, with the following results: 281 oil wells, 22 condensate wells, one dry gas well and 141 dry holes. The remaining 105 wells were wildcats, of which 19 were producers. The geological distribution of these discoveries was as follows: In 1944, production amounted to 178,-522,630 bbl., which was an increase of some 31,670,384 bbl. over the 1943 figure of 136,852,246 bbl. These figures include both condensate and oil production, as separate figures are not available. Wildcatting in the area was more successful during 1944 than in 1943 as the following comparison of number of wells drilled illustrates: Discoveries during 1944 Smith Point, Chambers County.—Standard Oil Company of Texas completed its No. I State, sec. 109, on Feb. 15, 1944, in a Frio sand at 8135 to 8146 ft. The well flowed 250 bbl. of 42º gravity oil through an 1/8-in, choke. Gas-oil ratio was 800 to I; tubing pressure, 1100 bbl. Four other oil wells and one gas well were completed during the year. This discovery does not appear to be of major importance. The producing area lies on the upthrown side of a large fault. North Winnie, Chambers County.—Sun Oil Co. completed No. I P. E. Dougherty on Apr. 27, 1944, from the Frio, through perforations at 8757 to 8759 ft. The initial production was 154 bbl. of 38.3º gravity oil through an 1/8-in. choke. Gas-oil ratio Was 2526 to 1; tubillg Pressure, 2280 1b.; casing Pressure, 1225 lb.; total depth, 9519 ft. Three other wells were drilled during the Year. This discovery is on the downthrown side of the major Winnie Stowell fault, and increases in magnitude the already large producing area along this fault. Mayes Field, Chambers County.—Humble Oil and Refining Company's No. I Mary Etta Mayes was completed on Dec. 24, 1944, in a Frio sand, at 8166 to 8169 ft. through 1/4-in. for 768 bbl. of 40.3º gravity
