I. INTRODUCTION THE geology of the Tintic mining district, fully treated, would occupy an elaborate monograph. This less comprehensive paper is devoted primarily to the occurrence and origin of the orebodies of the district, while space is given to those phases of the general geology only which seem necessary to a proper setting of such a discussion. The first geological report on the Tintic district to be issued was that by Tower and Smith, published in 1899, in the form of a paper in Part III of the Nineteenth Annual Report of the U. S. Geological Survey, and also as Folio No. 65, Geologic Atlas of the United States. About four years ago a second investigation was begun by Waldemar Lindgren and G. F. Loughlin, of the U. S. Geological Survey. With the exception of a paper on the oxidized zinc ores of the Tintic district by Mr. Loughlin, the results of their work are still unpublished. The writer's acquaintance with the district began in the fall, of 1913, and has extended over a period of about two years.

THIS paper describes experiments in which eight test samples of gelatin dynamite were fired in three different types of apparatus and the quantity and composition of the gaseous products of detonation determined. The special dynamites were so prepared that the oxygen balance of the samples varied from -35.0 to +6.0 g. per 100 g. of explosive, including the wrapper. By means of this graded series of explosives, the relation between oxygen balance and gaseous products of detonation could be studied explicitly. The effect of varying oxygen balance on explosive strength has been discussed in another paper.1 The apparatus employed in the work described in the present paper included (1) the Bichel gage, a steel bomb of 15-1. volume; (2) the Crawshaw-Jones confined detonation apparatus, a steel cannon from which the explosive is fired into a pipe of 90-1. volume; and (3) the Hercules tank, an apparatus in which the explosive is confined in a quartz block which is placed in a steel tank of about 4500-1. volume. A full description of the apparatus is given later. VARIABLES AFFECTING COMPOSITION OF DETONATION PRODUCTS The character of the detonation products of commercial explosives is governed in part by the same factors that affect the combustion products from explosive mixtures of air with gases or vapors. In either case, combustible materials-namely, carbon, hydrogen, and sometimes sulfur-are present and combined variously. In an exploding gas mixture the combustibles are oxidized by oxygen in the admixed air, whereas with explosives the necessary oxygen is provided by oxygen-carrying materials in the explosive ingredients.

The iron deposits of the Imataca Range of Venezuela, which occur along the Orinoco River, in the northern border of the Guayana Highlands, have lately attracted attention on account of their economic possibilities. Many deposits occur in this area; some of slight economic importance and others that may rank with the largest masses of high-grade iron ore of the world. The geology and the character of the ores seem to be remarkably similar to those of the large iron deposits of Brazil. In the investigation of the Venezuelan deposits a definite relationship has been found between the mineralization of the large orebodies and igneous intrusions, especially norites and granites. The following paper is the result of a field and laboratory investigation of the ore deposits. The field work was done during the months of February and March of the year 1929, partly in the company of Prof. W. H. Newhouse. The laboratory studies have been made in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, under the supervision of Professor Lindgren and Professor Newhouse. GENERAL GEOLOGY OF GUAYANA HIGHLANDS General Geography and Physiography The Sierra de Imataca proper occupies a narrow belt along the south bank of the Orinoco River, in the northeastern part of the State of Bolivar and in the western part of the Delta Amacuro Territory of Venezuela. The State of Bolivar is generally known as the Venezuelan Guayana, as it forms part of the same physiographic province of the Guianas and northeast Brazil. In general the Venezuelan Guayana is an extensive plateau, sloping gently towards the Orinoco River to the north and towards the Atlantic Ocean to the east. In the northern part mountains are rare, and consist mainly of elongated low hills. Towards the British Guiana-Brazil boundary, table mountains with vertical cliffs are found forming the ranges of Parima, Roraima and Pacaraima. [ ] Thomas C. Baker, Jr., has been transferred by the American Manganese Steel Div. of the American Brake Shoe Co., from their Oakland, Calif., branch to their Cleveland, Ohio, office. He will represent them in Ohio and Michigan. William H. Carson, has been appointed district manager of Goodman Mfg. Co's. Huntington, W. Va. sales office. He succeeds Morris W. Highland, granted a leave of absence for health reasons. Mr. Carson, a graduate engineer of Michigan College of Mining & Technology, has been a member of the company's Huntington sales force since 1939, the past two years as assistant district manager. James Parnell Caulfield, former general manager of the Utah Copper Div. of Kennecott Copper Corp., has been appointed assistant general manager of Kennecott's Western Mining Div. L. F. Pett, general supervisor of operations of the Utah Copper Div., was named Mr. Caulfield's successor as general manager. William D. THE results of an extensive experimental program relating to the effectiveness of gravel screens have been correlated. The factors considered in some detail include gravel size and condition of packing, sand size and size distribution, fluid velocity, fluid viscosity, and thickness and arrangement of gravel screens. Good agreement between calculated values based upon probability considerations and experimental results relating to the influence of the thickness of the gravel screen was obtained. All of these factors are treated in the correlation in order that their influence may be taken into account in ascertaining the characteristics of an effective gravel screen for a particular set of conditions. The details of the experimental program are not given in the present paper but a description of generalized behavior and typical experimental results are recorded in graphic form. INTRODUCTION Gravel screens have been placed in water and oil wells for a number of years1,2,3 with the dual objective of increasing the productivity and decreasing the entrance of sand into the well bore. An understanding of the factors controlling the effectiveness of gravel screens in this connection is of industrial interest because it will lead to the proper selection of gravel. Some of the fundamental considerations involved in the migration of sand through a coarser body of porous materials were investigated by Coberly and Wagner4 and further experimental work has been carried out by Gumpertz.5 Apparently the pertinent phenomena are somewhat complex and are influenced by many variables. The present paper deals with the prediction of the behavior of gravel screens under the conditions encountered in practice but does not attempt to discuss the experimental methods or results that were obtained as a background and upon which the prediction is based. INFLUENCE OF GRAVEL SCREENS UPON PRODUCTIVITY The use of a gravel screen may increase the productivity of a well by increasing its effective diameter, and this constitutes one of the objectives of its use. The permeability of most gravels and coarse sands that are employed in practice is so large compared to that of the sand in place that relatively little loss in production rate will arise from the use of material fine enough to cause the desired resistance to sand migration. For example, in Fig. I is depicted the approximate variation in the permeability of closely sized spherical gravels under the conditions of packing likely to be encountered in screens. The dotted lines indicate the variation that might be found because of differences in packing. It should be realized that the permeability is not a single-valued function of the. average grain diameter but is related to a large number of factors, including the size, the size distribution and the shapes of the particles. However, Fig. I does permit a rough estimation of the permeability of closely sized- spherical gravels and shows that the permeability with even the smaller particles is very large compared to that of most petroleum production horizons.

Gordon, Philadelphia, Pa.: There can be no objection to the use of cross-compound blowing-engines; and when they are condensing they are susceptible of great range of duty with slight loss in efficiency. By those who have use for the full heat of the waste gases, this type of engine is advantageous; but many furnaces are not so located. The pig-iron is their finished product, and the gases are to be employed only for furnace-use. In this case simple engines are preferable, being less expensive and having less parts to take care of. These reasons determined the introduction of the engines, a sketch of which is distributed at this session. There are three of these engines to furnish blast for two furnaces, for a make of abont 250 tons per day, using 75 per cent. anthracite and 85 per cent. magnetic ores; and they are expected to blow up to twenty pounds pressure per square inch. A simple diffusion-couple experiment was carried out for the purpose of determining whether chromium in sufficient amounts would cause the cementite phase in cast irons to become thermodynamically stable with respect to graphite and austenite at 1750°F. The implications of the results to some current theories on graphitization mechanisms are discussed. The literature abounds with evidence that chromium retards the decomposition of cementite to graphite and austenite or ferrite, for example during first-stage and second-stage graphitization in malleabilizing white cast irons and the subcritical graphitization of steels. Efforts to explain this retarding action of chromium have been conjectural, however, because the mechanisms controlling graphitization kinetics in the absence of chromium have never been clearly established. Concerning rate control, there are basically two schools of thought: 1) that graphitization rates are limited by diffusion potential (the stability of cementite relative to graphite, and 2) that graphitization rates are limited by diffusivity of Fe, C, Si, vacancies, and so forth.5'10 Chromium then, is thought either to increase the stability of cementite or to retard some critical diffusion process.

IN every country economic circumstances prescribe the method used to produce a commodity at lowest cost. In Pennsylvania a man's wages for working 4 hr buys a ton of coal wholesale; in Germany a laborer must work 40 hr, or ten times as long. In western Europe, therefore, conservation of fuel is of primary importance, and recent practices of burning lime and cement differ from those employed in the United States. This paper presents data collected during a trip through western Europe in 1953. Considered uneconomical, shaft kilns for burning cement disappeared in the United States two generations ago. But because required capital investment is low and operation greatly improved, shaft kilns are still used to some extent in Europe, where fuel costs are high, and are even included in designs for plants under construction. During the last 50 years shaft kilns have been maintained at the same physical size, while their output has been increased at least four times.

At the request of a committee of the Engineering Division,' National Research Council, a study of the properties of boiler plate at various temperatures up to about 900' F. (482" C.) has been instigated. The following is a report of preliminary tests made on two grades of 1/2-in. plate and includes a description of the apparatus used in the determination of the proportional limit. Detailed reference to- the many published investigations in connection with the properties of steel at various temperatures will be omitted from this report. Suffice to state that results obtained for variation in tensile strength, elongation, and reduction in area with temperature are in substantial agreement with the effects now generally considered to be correct. Comparison of proportional limit values with results obtained by other investigators will be found in the conclusions. Materials Used The steels tested were $1/2-in. (12.7 mm.) open-hearth boiler plate of firebox and marine grades. The specified tensile strength and the analysis for each are shown in Table 1. In the manufacture of this material, a

The smoker, Monday evening, was an unusual success. It was held in the beautiful gold room of the Congress hotel, which was very elabo-rately decorated with American flags. More than 500 were present. The gallery was filled with ladies, who responded to the request of the song leader and helped in many ways to grace the occasion. The enter-tainment, was a varied one and was original with the Chicago Committee, which deserves great credit for the unusual success of the event. Al-though it was mostly funmaking, Dr. F. B. Cottrell and George S. Rice of the Bureau of Mines gave some very interesting talks, illustrated by flags and moving pictures, of their trip through Europe since the armis-tice. Mr. Rice's talk dealt particularly with the demonstrative coal and iron regions and Doctor Cottrell's was devoted almost solely to that part of his trip in Northern Italy where he was investigating the application of volcanic steam to power purposes. This steam is derived from boracic-acid springs and helium is secured as a byproduct.

THE Howe Memorial Lecture, in memory of Henry Marion Howe, Past President of the Institute, was authorized in April, 1923, as an annual address to be delivered by invitation under the auspices of the Institute by an individual of recognized and outstanding attainment in the science and practice of iron and steel metallurgy or metallography, chosen by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of the Iron and Steel Division. Previous to 1915, zinc refining had not become a general practice among the zinc smelters in the United States. Such refining as had been carried on was confined chiefly to remelting very high-leaded zinc, such as third-draw metal from the retort furnaces, and slab dross, and hard spelter from galvanizing pots. In this remelting operation, the lead and iron were settled out and the refined spelter obtained graded fifth class, ie., Prime Western. Owing to the presence of lead in most zinc ores, the bulk of the spelter produced by direct smelting is of this Prime Western grade. Careful selection of ores of low lead content gave purer grades of spelter, z.e., Brass Special and Intermediate; and smelters which could secure ores carrying practically no lead produced high-grade spelter. Thus, in general, the grade of spelter produced by any smelter was predetermined by the purity of the ore it could obtain. The needs of the warring nations of Europe for enormous quantities of cartridge and other high-grade brass resulted in such a demand for the purer grades of spelter that the available supply of lead-free and low-lead ores could not produce the quantity required. Prime Western grades went begging, so to speak, while high grades sold at times from 5 to 15 c. per pound over the Prime Western market. The great demand, coupled with the wide market margin, which permitted the inherent costs and losses, resulted in the conversion of the lower grades into higher grades by processes of refining. These conditions also accentuated the development and size of the electrolytic plants, which were being worked out at the time this increased demand for pure grade of metal occurred. The electrolytic process, where available, produces a higher grade of spelter from impure ores than does the fire process; a large portion of those impurities in the ore, which by the distillation process would be carried into the spelter, are removed in the leaching of the ores and the purification of the solutions. The refining process, adopted at a number of smelters for the purpose of converting low-grade spelter into grades suitable for bras4 was that of redistillation.

Effects of heavy metal ions on the growth and the activities of iron and sulfur oxidation of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were investigated. Mercuric, silver, and stannous ions inhibited both of the growth and the iron- oxidizing enzyme system of the bacterium. On the other hand, uranyl ion inhibited the growth, but it gave almost no effect on the iron-oxidizing enzyme system. The inhibitory effect of uranyl sulfate on the growth of the bacterium is intensified on lowering the cultivating ' temperature from 28 ºC to 7 ºC. In the concentration of 10-3M, cadmium and copper ions inhibited colloidal sulfur-oxidizing activity of the cells 69 and 52 %, respectively, though they did not inhibit the iron-oxidizing activity at all in the concentration. On the contrary, stannous chloride did not givr any effect on the sulfur-oxidizing activity of the cells, though it inhibited the iron-oxidizing activity 55 % in the concentration of 10-3M. Several differences were observed among the cytochrome systems of cell-free extracts of the cells grown on iron and on sulfur.
