MISSOURI's famous lead area, in what is known as Southeast Missouri, is locally termed the "Lead Belt." These deposits are in the Bonne Terre dolomite of late Cambrian age which has a thickness of nearly 400 ft. Underlying this is the La Motte sandstone which varies in thickness from 0 to 400 ft. The La Motte beds are deposited directly on the ancient erosion surface of Pre-Cambrian porphyries and granites of probably Algonkian age. The buried igneous peaks extend up into the Bonne Terre in several areas within the Lead Belt. Overlying the Bonne Terre are shales and siliceous dolomites of late Cambrian and early Ordovician age. Within the Lead Belt these have a thickness of from 0 to 500 ft. JAY A. CARPENTER, Tonopah, Nev: (communication to the Secretary*).-This description of the Santa Gertrudis mill is of great interest to the operators of similar silver mills in Nevada. At the San Francisco meeting last September there were two excellent papers presented on Nevada silver mills; one by A. H. Jones on The Tonopah Plant of the Belmont Milling Co., and the other by E. E. Carpenter on Cyaniding Practice of the Churchill Milling Co., Wonder, Nev. At the same meeting, I presented a paper on-Slime Agitation and Solution Replacement Methods at the West End Mill, Tonopah, Nev., covering this .particular feature of our milling practice. A comparison of the data presented in these four papers is interesting in that, while the general design and practice is much the same in all cases, there is a wide difference in the design and practice in the various departments of 'the mills. It is to be regretted that Mr. Rose did not round out. this excellent article by following Mr. Jones's and Mr. Carpenter's' lead in giving the average gold and silver content of the ore milled and the resulting tailing, with the consumption of chemicals and the? cost of milling. The practice of the Santa Gertrudis mill in the use of ?cyanide and zinc offers an interesting comparison with that of the Nevada mills, and a discussion of this point may bring out the reasons for the differences that exist.

Methane drainage by cross-measure boreholes on retreat longwall faces can be a viable alternative to the vertical gob degas boreholes under favorable circumstances. The research was done in a mine working Pittsburgh coal seam in northern West Virginia under USBM Cooperative Agreement No. 14-09-0050-3252. The study was the first application of this technique to Pittsburgh coal seam. A total of 14 small diameter, inclined boreholes were drilled over a retreat longwall panel from gate roads, to intersect the overlying coal seams. All boreholes were manifolded to a pipeline and the gob gas was extracted by a surface exhaust fan. The methane capture ratio was poor at 7% to 18% at various stages of the longwall panel. A vertical gob degas borehole captured an additional 20% gas. Poor results were due to premature failures of the cross-measure boreholes leading to air leakage. For better performance, the boreholes should be drilled from a point 30 to 45 m (98 to 148 ft) from longwall pillar over the largest chain pillar. The standpipe should be grouted for at least 6 m (20 ft), and the entry containing boreholes and the pipeline must be supported to ensure access for maintenance and optimization of methane capture. Coursing the ventilation air around longwall such that it forces methane migration toward cross-measure boreholes can further improve methane capture. The optimum vertical inclination is 45º ± 10º.

The object of this paper is to present a theory of the formation of fissures, which seems to be supported by all available data. The investigation is, in the main, an exact one, and irregularities of the rock-structure are generalized. From the conclusions drawn a general classification of fissures is made, and this should be of practical use in the comparison of mineral deposits. The theory also throws some light on the equilibrium of the earth's crust and the depth of action of surface-waters. Incidentally, additions are made to the theory of earthquake-slips. Former Theory. It has been previously pointed out that the "jointing" of homogeneous rocks occurs in two sets of planes, at right angles to one another, and making angles of 450 with the directions of greatest and least principal stress.' The theory by which this fact is explained does not, however, account for fissures and faults, because normal faults are usually more vertically, and reverse faults more horizontally, inclined than 450. The "jointing law" is based on the following axiom: In a homogeneous mass under pressure, rupture must take place on the lines of maximum tangential stress."2 This law applies, with fair approximation, to the tests on jointing which can be made in the laboratory, and as nearly as can be expected to the natural jointing-planes in rock-masses, where the stresses are not very great; but it entirely fails to account for fissure-fractures.3

Tins paper proposes two units (believed to be new) for designating, respectively, capacity and efficiency for primary and intermediate crushers. CAPACITY Operators know that the tonnage of rock that can be put through a particular crusher in a give time depends primarily upon the crusher setting (open setting for jaw and primary gyratory types; closed setting for cones and rolls), and secondarily on the lithological character of the feed, its maximum size, the amount of fines that it carries, its moisture content, and the method of feeding. The proposed capacity formula states a relationship between all of these factors in one empirical equation, as follows: TR = TR80KK'K" [I] in which Ts, called "reduction tons per hour" is the new capacity unit; T = tons of feed per hour requiring crushing; R80 = "80-per cent reduction ratio"; and K, K', and K" are constants that approximate quantitatively lithological character, moisture content and method of feeding, respectively. T is the hourly weight of material in the feed that is coarser than the coarsest discharge of the crusher. (For marked departures from the normal specific gravity range - 2.5 to 2.7 - T should. be adjusted to corresponding volumes.) In the crushers under consideration, discharge from the crushing zone is limited by the minimum dimension of a particle. Passage of the particle through a square-mesh screen is limited by its intermediate dimension. Sheppard1 has shown that the ratio of maximum: intermediate: minimum average dimensions of broken rock fragments may be taken as about 1.5 : 1 : 0.6 for nonslabby rocks such as are normally crushed, while for slabby rocks, such as thin-bedded sedimentaries, foliated schists and gneisses, and the blocky metamorphics, the ratio is of the average order I.3:I:0.3, with the possibility of an even smaller relative value for the thickness. Gaudin2 finds the corresponding ratio for 150 + 200-mesh pyrite to be 1.4: 1 : 0.6. The hourly tonnage of crusher-plant feed, therefore, should be diminished by the amount thereof that would pass a square-mesh screen of which the aperture is S times the crusher setting, where S is a shape factor with the value 1.7 for rocks that break exceptionally cubic; 2 for ores and rocks that exhibit no appreciable tendency to slabbiness; and 2.5 to 3, or, in exceptional cases, even larger, when the tendency to slabbiness is marked. R80 is the quotient of the theoretical square-mesh aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the feed, divided by the aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the product. It is best determined from screen tests.

At present the manufacture of metallic zinc, or spelter, in Missouri, is carried on only at the establishments located at Carondelet, or South St. Louis. Although the development of the industry has not yet reached that fulness which it has attained elsewhere in the United States, still the commanding advantages of position of these establishments are so evident that the prospective importance and magnitude of spelter manufacture in this State, and especially at this locality, can hardly be doubted. A study of the chemical and technical aspects of the business of these points cannot be without interest to the metallurgist as well as to the capitalist. I have endeavored to investigate, as far as was practicable, within the limits of a paper of this character, some of the problems connected with this industry, at the same time making a few comparisons of the results attained at some of the Carondelet works with those of other establishments with regard to which information could be obtained. In the prosecution of these studies I have been kindly aided by the managers of Carondelet establishments, and by Prof. Charles P. Williams, Director of Rolla School of Mines. To the latter I am especially indebted for assistance in regard to methods of analysis. To all these gentlemen I return my thanks for their valuable aid. Other sources of information will be duly credited in their proper places.

THE so-called Kick law' is generally accepted to . mean that for each reduction to one-half in particle diameter, in a unit weight, the same amount of work is required. In crushing-efficiency calculations on crushing tests it is customary, when basing the calculation on Kick's law, to assign ordinal numbers to each standard sieve size. These ordinal numbers increase by a constant difference with each successive sieve aperture, because standard sieve apertures are in constant ratio. Minus 200-mesh is generally assumed as equivalent to 37 microns in size. By definition, the ordinal number multiplied by the per cent material of any size is equal to the energy units in the material of that size in a unit weight of sample. The sum of all energy units is the energy units content of a unit weight of sample, whether it be crusher feed or product. The difference between the energy units in the product and that in the feed is the tangible result of the work input per unit weight of feed. From this the amount of work necessary for one energy unit may be calculated. This has been done for a quartz crushing-test made at the Intermountain Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Salt Lake City, in which the net work going to crushing was carefully measured. The results of this crushing test are given in Table 1.'

What is experience worth? Representatives from the Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum Societies discussed the question as part of the 1970 Annual AIME Meeting held in Denver, Colo. the week of February 15. Petroleum engineer-consultant, Michel T. Halbouty of Houston, Tex. offered his own clarification of present-day employer-employee relationships in engineering as a whole. "Longevity does not equal experience on the job. Further, when employees are considering salary increases and promotions, job performance is considered all the time; experience two- thirds of the time and length of employment one- half the time." He added, "worth is really what the employee can get for it and experience is essential to survival." Halbouty also noted that salary and responsibility is a function of man's value to his company and is about "as discrediting as grey hair." As far as the engineer is concerned, he reported, the company's ability to pay is, in large measure, not considered. From the company's viewpoint, however, the employee is expected to learn his first year on the job. His second year, he is expected to make his presence felt, Should he require three years to orient himself he might soon be looking for another job. The petroleum engineer pointed out that when the employee wants to know why the salary scale tends to plateau off in later years, most employers react by recognizing that employees "flatten themselves rather than the company flattening them."

Human progress has a visible material phase, easily discernible, that is expressed in the standard of living. This material phase, however, is only the outward expression of a spiritual or mental phase that acts as a driving force in making humanity improve both its outlook and its mode of living. The instrument of progress is the human brain. Under the urge of spiritual drive, the brain acts as a focal point to utilize the forces of nature and put them to work for the benefit of mankind. Besides intelligence, which is an innate quality, the tools of the human brain are knowledge, experience, training, initiative, and skill. Given sufficient intelligence, the human brain can make an amazing amount of progress, provided it is supplied with an adequate spiritual and moral urge and a good technical background. It is the role of education to sup- ply such a background. The material phase of human progress proceeds on a series of parallel fronts, all of them interdependent to some extent (Fig. 7). The rise of the standard of living, dependent as it is upon the manufacture and mass distribution of goods, is based essentially upon the development and utilization of the material resources of a country or land area. This development involves the extraction of mineral and organic products from Mother Earth, their transportation to manufacturing centers, their transformation into finished goods and their dis-

This paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, pro- duced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is cornrnonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. I). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. Test holes where drilled at various points and the drillers' log indicate that the St. Peter deposit ranges in thickness from 63 to 71 feet. An analytical method is developed to determine the variation of the ultimate lateral resistance of a plate in a cohesionless soil with depth. This analysis is based on a modification of Rankine's classical earth pressure theory and the theory of plasticity as applied to soils. The ultimate resistance is defined as the product of the effective stress at the midpoint of the plate, the area of the plate and a dimensionless variable termed the ultimate resistance factor. This variable has been plotted us the depth ratio: i.e., the ratio of of the depth of embedment us the height of the plate. The resistance of a plate may then be calculated using the values af the ultimate resistance factor from the chart provided or the equation may be programmed for use in an analysis of anchor systems in cohesionless soils. It is emphasized that the analysis is semitheoretical. The theory has been compared with experimental results reported in the literature and results indicate general agreement. Actual field tests are necessary to further verify this theory. INTRODUCTION With the exploration for oil offshore in waters all over the world, it is of importance to determine the behavior of the various soils in relation to their ultimate resistance to deformation. Examples of such problems are the holding capacity of anchors and the lateral resistance of piles. Very little information is available in the published literature on the design and performance of anchors, in either cohesive or cohesionless soils. The analysis developed in this report is the first step in obtaining a solution for the determination of anchor holding capacity in a cohesionless material. DISCUSSION The theory used in the analysis is based on the ultimate strength of the soil and is the maximum resistance developed by the plate against further movement. In such a state the elastic deformations are disregarded in comparison with the plastic deformations. Hence, the plate can be considered as completely rigid. The theory of plasticity determines the three unknown stresses at any point by means of two equilibrium conditions for a small earth element in combination with the failure condition. However, the exact solutions can only be carried out in a few simple cases such as, for example, when the rupture or failure lines are straight (Rankine theory) or with spiral and straight rupture lines (Prandtl theory).l Kiitter 2 derived a single equation expressing the variation of the stress in any given rupture line. To utilize this equation, it is necessary to know the stress in the rupture line at a certain point. Unfortunately, this is difficult to obtain unless the rupture line intersects the free surface at a certain angle or when the earth is cohesion-less and unloaded. A method to overcome this is to consider only the boundary conditions at both ends of a rupture line without investigating the equilibrium of the earth above the rupture line. This assumes that the rupture lines meet the surface at statically correct angles, so that boundary stresses may be determined. As Kiitter's equation furnished a relation between these stresses, the unit earth pressure may be calculated at the point where the rupture line meets the wall. Another way in which Kotter's equation may be applied is in investigating the equilibrium of a soil mass above a rupture line. This method assumes that the failure or rupture line is known and that the boundary stresses in the rupture line at the ground surface can be determined. In this case it is possible to determine the earth pressure from the equations of equilibrium.

A method is described by whichX-ray pole figures and axis density figures may be plotted automatically. The X-ray data are obtained using a Siemens texture gonionleter and the Schulz reflection method. Composite sampling methods are used to obtain a full quadrant of the pole figure. The contour lines of the pole figure and axis density figures are drawn using a computer-controlled x-y plotter. The computer program used to draw the contours was obtained from ZBM. POLE figures used to describe crystallographic orientations of poly crystalline sheet materials are usually plotted manually from X-ray diffraction output in the form of a strip chart recording of the intensity distribution of a given crystallographic pole in physical space. Today's computers and associated plotting equipment now make it possible to plot pole figures and axis density figures automatically. Inverse pole figures have been determined by mathematically "inverting" X-ray pole figure data.'-' In general, these methods require complicated, time-consuming numerical calculations. A more economical but less accurate method is to determine the axis densities of low-index crystallographic poles using an X-ray diffractometer. When these axis densities are plotted in a unit stereographic triangle contour lines can be drawn to represent the axis density distribution. This can now be done automatically. Computers were used to plot pole figures by a method developed by Holland, Engler, and powers.' In their method intensity ratios based on a random standard sample were obtained from a strip chart recording, and the stereographic (x, y) coordinates of these ratios were determined by a computer. Symbols characteristic of different intensity ratio levels were then plotted using an automatic x, y plotter and intensity contours were drawn manually. The present paper describes a method by which pole figures and axis density figures have been automatically plotted from digital data obtained from a Siemens X-ray unit. Plotting was accomplished using an IBM 1620 computer and a Calcomp 563 digital plotter. COMPUTER PROGRAM The computer program was obtained from IBM Systems Reference Library, No. 1620-CS-05X, and was designed to plot contour maps from randomly distributed data. It consists of a set of twelve separate subprograms, four of which were used in this work. The program takes a given distribution of data points and by a numerical method determines the values at mesh points of a square grid system superimposed over the input data. The output data from this program is in a form suitable for input to the contour plotting program. A smoothing program is also available which calculates new mesh point values from a continuous function fitted to neighboring mesh points. The degree of smoothing depends on the number of points around a given grid point which are used to adjust or smooth the grid value. The contour plotting program is designed to allow the user to specify the interval, scale, and annotation of the contours to be plotted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Pole Figure Data Points. Several of the current concepts of brittle fracture involve consideration of, the existence of defects or flaws. Griffith 1 observed that the tensile strength of brittle materials was several orders of magnitude less than might be expected from the calculated strength of the molecular bonds. He was able to show that the stress concentration at the tip of an elliptical crack is sufficient to raise the local stress level many fold. He therefore proposed that real materials do contain such stress risers in the form of minute cracks and that this accounts for the rather large difference between theoretical and actual strengths of brittle materials. The degree of stress magnification depends to a great extent upon the orientation of the crack with respect to the general stress system, and to the general geometry of the crack. It is but a small step to extend the theory to include flaws and defects of other sorts which, though they may be less tractable mathematically than cracks, may still function as stress risers in a real sense in real materials. Brace 2 proposed that the application of the Griffith theory to rock material could be tested in two ways: "(a) by finding the orientation of cracks from which macroscopic fractures have developed and (b) comparing failure strengths from tests at different conditions of loading." In 1963 the author and coworkers at the Bureau of Mines, Twin Cities Mining Research Center, working on a problem involving relationships between strength, sonic velocity, and microstructure "eveloped an experimental technique to examine several somewhat similar questions; namely. does the frequency of occurrence of actual or potential stress risers dictate the relative strength of the material as proposed by Weibull;4 can actual flaws or defects in the rock structure be identified and related to strength and perhaps other properties in accordance with Griffith's theory; and is the anisotropic strength and elastic behavior of certain rocks related to the preferred orientation of these actual or potential stress risers? The experimental approach developed to answer these questions appears equally applicable to the testing of Griffith's theory as proposed by Brace. Basically the approach consists of a series of point-load tensile tests followed by petrofabric examination of thin sections prepared from the specimens in order to identify and apply a quantitative measure to microstructural defects which may have contributed to the failure process. In the point-load test, tensile stresses are induced by a compressive load applied to the center of a disc-shaped specimen by means of two opposing hemispherical indentors. Failure generally occurs as a single fracture parallel to the axis of loading and bisecting the disc. INTRODUCTION A CONSIDERABLE number of high-temperature alloys, that is, alloys which have load-carrying ability at elevated temperatures, have been developed on an empirical basis. In order to determine why these alloys possess this particular ability, a project was started at Battelle Memorial Institute on the fundamental factors promoting high-temperature strength of alloys. At the time of inception of this study, the cobalt-base alloy, Vitallium, was widely used because of its good high-temperature properties. One phase of this study was to include an investigation of the structures observed in Vitallium after various heat treatments. However, before investigating the structural features of Vitallium, it appeared logical to examine the phase diagrams of the related binary systems in order to develop information as to which phases- might be present in Vitallium. A preliminary survey of the pertinent alloy systems was made, with particular emphasis on the cobalt-chromium system, which is the base for the Vitallium series of alloys. The early work of Lewkonja1 and Guertler2 indicated that cobalt and chromium are completely miscible in the liquid state, and, within a narrow temperature range, in the solid state; that the liquidus shows a minimum; and that the alloys containing 45 to '85 pct chromium undergo a transformation at 1200 to 1250°C. More recently, Wever and Haschimoto,3 Wever and Lange,4 and Matsunaga5 carried out experimental work which led to the diagrams shown in Fig I and 2. Both diagrams are based on thermal analysis, metallographic, magnetic, and dilatation data; in addition, X ray diffraction results were used by Wever and Haschimoto, and electrical resistance measurements by Matsunaga. It is apparent from a comparison of the two diagrams that there was a difference of opinion as to the locations of the boundaries of the various phases, and as to the existence of a phase containing approximately 47 pct chromium. With these exceptions noted, it might be pointed out that the two diagrams are similar, and that, in general, any particular reaction which is shown on both diagrams occurs at a lower temperature on the Matsunaga diagram than on that of Wever-Haschimoto-Lange. Thus, in view of the gaps in the data and the questionable features in the published diagrams, it appeared desirable to start the fundamental study of Vitallium by determining the diagram for the cobalt-chromium system. EXPERIMENTAL WORK For the convenience of the reader, the diagram as determined by the present investigation is presented in Fig g. DgIel-ential thermal, nretallographic, and X-ray paramzetric methods were used to establish the Yb-Pb phase dingram. The terminal solid solubilities in the system are less than 0.2 at. pct. Lead additions lower the 792°C transformation tewzperature of pure ytterbiun~ at 787°C by means of an inverted peritectic veaction. Ytterbium additions raise the 327oC melting point of lead to 329°C by means of a perilectic reaction. Three intermetallic compounds Yb2Pb, YbPb, and YbPb, melt congruerttly at 1246", 1116o, and 740°C. respectively. YbsPb3 forms by a peritectic reacliorz at 1250°C. YbzPb crystallizes in the PbCh (C23) type structure and the orthorhombic latliceo constants are a, = 7.478. bo = 5.225, aud C0 = 9.549A. YbsPbs crystallizes in the hfnsSi3 (D8a) type structure. The hexa~nal lattice constants for this phase are a, = 9.325 and co = 6.92d. YbPbl crystallizes in the cubic AuCU3 (Ll2) type structure with a: = 4.8628 + 0.0008A. YbPb is diwrorphic with the structure change occurring al 507°C upon healing. The crystal structures of the two forttzs were not determined. Eulectic reactions occur at 5.1 at. pct Pb and 769oC, 41.5 at. pct Pb and 1086oC, and G8.0 at. pct Ph and 717°C: RELIABLE information concerning the alloying behavior of most of the rare-earth metals is scarce. A systematic study of the rare earth-lead alloy systems now in progress is an effort to supply such information. Determination of the phase diagram of the Yb-Pb alloys is the first step of this study. Variations in the valence of normally divalent ytterbium may be studied by comparing the characteristics of the Yb-Pb alloys to those of the trivalent rare earth-lead and of the divalent alkaline-earth-lead systems. Of particular interest are the melting temperatures of the intermetal-lic compounds since these are known to be high relative to the melting points of the constituent metals. Crys-tallographic and magnetic susceptibility data for the rare earth-lead alloys are to be included in the comparative study. Results from this and subsequent investigations should provide a better understanding of alloy formation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. The major impurities in the ytterbium and lead used in this investigation are listed in Table I. The lead was obtained from Cominco Products, Inc., and was specified to be 99.99 pct pure. DURING recent months, the acute shortage of steel scrap has necessitated the use of higher percentages of hot metal in the open-hearth charge. With these higher percentages, the sulphur content of hot metal has become an increasingly important factor in the control of the quality of steel. Thus, the blast-furnace operator is faced with a demand not only for more output but for a higher quality of product. More than go per cent of the sulphur charged into the blast furnace is contained in the coke. With the tremendously increased demand, the trend of coke quality has been toward higher sulphur, higher and more variable ash, and poorer physical characteristics. This has been brought about by less selective coal mining, increased production rates in coke plants and resumption of operations of many beehive ovens. In a single month last year, one blast-furnace plant in the Pittsburgh district operated with coke obtained from 52 sources. The effect of variability and quantity of coke ash on blast-furnace operation is well known. The improved results obtained with furnaces operating on coke made from washed coals compared with results on coke made from raw coals is ample proof of the effectiveness of low and uniform ash. Coal-washing plants, however, require a large capital expenditure, and are impractical for most of the large number of small producers, whose operations are confined chiefly to periods of abnormally high demand. Furthermore, not all coals are physically adaptable to washing. PRINCIPLES OF IRON DESULPHURIZATION IN FURNACE Although investigations of the blast-furnace process have not clearly revealed the detailed mechanism of iron desulphurization within the furnace, they have been sufficiently extensive to permit a postulation of the following general principles: I. Iron, in its travel from furnace top to hearth, continues to pick up sulphur until it has reached tuyere level. The zone of iron desulphurization is relatively narrow, being confined to a vertical distance extending approximately from tuyere level to the iron-slag interface in the hearth.1 2. Combustion of coke is confined to spherical zones extending approximately 40 in. from the nose of each tuyere.2 Coke ash is released as the coke burns in these combustion areas. 3. With a constant amount of sulphur in the charge, the sulphur content of the metal product is a function of hearth temperature, final slag analysis, slag viscosity, and slag volume. Both hearth temperature and slag analysis affect slag viscosity. For a slag of constant analysis, viscosity always decreases with an increase in temperature;

Professor Somasundaran has given an excellent presentation of the numerous problems which remain to be solved before the selective aggregation of fine particulates is likely to see broad commercial application in the beneficiation of mineral fines. However it is useful, I think, to reiterate some of the major problem areas. The over-riding factor which has limited the development of selective aggregation techniques is that processes such as coagulation and flocculation tend to be inherently non-selective. Conditions which favor the aggregation of one kind of fine particles usually favor the aggregation of all kinds of particles. As Professor Somasundaran has pointed out, the state of aggregation of a fine-particle dispersion is primarily determined by the forces of interaction between the individual particles. In most systems, the dominant forces are: 1. van der Waals - London Dispersion forces between the particles themselves 2. electrical double layer forces 3. steric forces between adsorbed layers on the surfaces of the particles. The London Dispersion forces between like particles are always attractive, but for dissimilar particles dispersed in a fluid medium can, in some cases, lead to a net repulsion. Electrical double layer forces always lead to repulsion between like particles but can, again, cause either attraction or repulsion for dissimilar materials. The steric forces, which are by far the least understood of the three types, can also lead to attraction or repulsion depending on condi-

A NUMBER of detailed investigations of the physical changes accom-panying age-hardening have raised the question as to the possibility of some phenomenon preceding the actual process of precipitation. There is considerable evidence to indicate that in the first stages of the aging process there is a pronounced distortion of the crystal lattice. This is particularly marked in duralumin. It would be of considerable theo-retical interest to know the nature of this distortion as compared with that produced in other ways and to find out whether, in supersaturated alloys, it is a necessary antecedent to the formation of a second phase by precipitation. It was believed that a study of the age-hardening char-acteristics of a normally aged alloy compared with one that had been mechanically distorted might supply some useful information on these points. In addition, information would be obtained regarding the effect of a mechanical distortion on any subsequent stage in the aging process. Duralumin was chosen as the material for this investigation because the various aspects of its aging behavior can be shown in detail by suit-able variations of the aging temperature. Also, probably more work has been done on this class of alloys than on any other. In spite of the many published results, it was felt that the experiments would be significant only if all of the work were done on samples from the same source and if they were examined under identical experimental conditions.
