THE territory covered in this discussion includes all the states west of the Mississippi river. Agriculture is expanding each year in this section, but until recent years the application of commercial fertilizers as an aid to crop production was not practised to any great extent. The use of commercial fertilizers has increased somewhat, but is still on a small basis as compared with the tonnages used else- where in the United States. During 1928 these western states used 665,100 tons of all classes of fertilizer as compared 'with 7,933,600 tons used in the whole United States; or this western area, compromising near- ly two-thirds the land area, uses about 5 per cent of the total fertilizer. To show how large a tonnage one state may consume, North Carolina for the year 192s used 1,349,360 tons of commercial fertilizer or about twice the amount used by 22 western states.

Leaching or solution mining, a relatively simple and economical process for beneficiating metallic ores, is likely to find increasing application in the treatment of low-grade ores that are impractical to mine by any other means. This process may be carried out in two different ways: 1) dump leaching, where the ore is moved from its original location to be leached at another site; and 2) In-situ leaching, where the ore is leached in place by introducing the leach solution at the top, letting it flow down through the ore under gravity, and then recovering it plus the dissolved metals it contains. Whichever leaching method is used, it is almost always necessary to break up the ore before leaching. In this paper a study is reported which indicates that rock broken by an explosion-in particular, an underground nuclear explosion-is significantly more amenable to leaching then is rock broken by other methods. These results suggest that the leaching speed and efficiency could be increased by nuclear fracturing of the ore. Not only would the leach time be shortened, but the resulting increase in strength or richness of the solutions would decrease plant installation expense as well as reduce pumping and processing costs. A considerable fund of experience has been accumulated in the course of several hundred experimental underground nuclear explosions, so that the gross results of any given nuclear explosion can now be predicted with a fair degree of confidence.' From this knowledge it seems clear that, under the proper conditions, large ore bodies can be fractured much more economically-macroscopically speaking-by nuclear explosions than by other methods. The present study concentrates on smaller scale effects that is, the cracks in the chunks of rock broken by the explosion-and shows that here too, in the microscopic domain, there are important advantages to nuclear fracturing. The intense shock produced by the very fast acting, high-brisance nuclear explosive fractures the rock in a way that should significantly improve its leachability. Experimental Procedure This study compared rocks broken by nuclear explosives with rocks produced by conventional mining, quarrying, or core drilling. The test samples, granite chunks 6 to 8 in. on a side, plus core sections, came from the area of the Hardhat*2 nuclear explosion and were taken both before and after the explosion. For comparison, several samples of quarried granite were obtained from a local gravestone monument company. The general procedure was to soak the test samples in leaching solution and then determine the extent of penetration. A standard commercial copper leaching solution was used (10 gpl Cu, 10 gpl H2SO4, 5 gpl ferric Fe, 15 gpl total Fe, pH about 1.5), to which a water-soluble penetrant dye, Zyglo 1-c, had been added. Details of the procedure were as follows: 1) Sample leached in solution containing Zyglo penetrant dye. 2) Washed with water. 3) Air-dried. 4) Cut with granite wire saw. 5) One face polished with granite monument polish. 6) Sent directly to be photographed, or heated at 110°C for 2 hr and then sent to be photographed. 7) Photographed under ultraviolet light to show crack patterns. Results After 10 days of leaching at 70-75°F, the samples were removed from the solution, washed, dried, and cut in half with a granite wire saw to study the penetration of the leach solution. Since the Zyglo dye in the leach is visible under ultraviolet light, the degree of penetration of the leach (and hence the cracks in the samples) can be studied on photographs of the crosscut samples made under ultraviolet light. The photos in [Fig. 1] show how the leach solution penetrated various representative samples. Of the 71 rock samples examined, fractures were most frequent and prominent in samples from the rubble produced by the nuclear explosion [(Fig. 1D)]. Fracturing was less apparent in shaft-mined rock [(Fig. 1B)], still less evident in drift-mined rock [(Fig. 1C)], and practically nonexistent in cored or quarried specimens [(Fig. 1A)]. The samples in [Fig. lA-C] were from the same general area as the nuclear explosion, but they were obtained before the explosion. Results of the crack studies are summarized in [Table 1]. The Zyglo-treated leach solution penetrated the test samples at the rate of about 1/2 mm during the first hour, 1 mm by the end of 4 hr, 2 to 3 mm in 12 hr, and 4 to 6 mm in 10 days, showing a progressively slower rate with time.

Numerous results and formulas have been published for analyzing seismic records, but most of them apply only to large-scale phenomena such as are encountered in studying earthquakes. In a few cases,' formulas have been published for some of the simpler structures. In the present paper, an attempt will be made to analyze several types of structures without using methods more advanced than those of a first course in calculus. In tracing a disturbance through a medium, it is almost always possible to base the analysis on Fermat's Principle of Extreme Time, which states that waves of displacement travel between points in such a manner as to make the time of travel an extremum with respect to all neighboring paths. In the simpler cases, comprising most of those used in optics or geophysical prospecting, this time is a minimum and the principle is often referred to as the Principle of Least Time. Within a homogeneous medium, having a uniform speed of transmission of the disturbance in all directions and throughout the medium, the paths are straight and are refracted at the interfaces in accordance with the Snell law of refraction, which states that the ratio of the sine of the angle, made by the ray with the normal to the interface, to the speed of transmission is the same on both sides of the interface. Thus, in any medium composed of homogeneous sections, this same ratio has a constant value at all points. In particular, if all interfaces are horizontal, it is apparent that the angles of incidence are the angles made by the ray with the vertical direction. Furthermore, the incident ray, the refracted ray and the normal to the interface are all in the same plane at each refraction,

Exploration was active in East and East Central Texas during 1944. Ten oil fields were discovered during the year, of which four show promise of development. The discovery wells of the Sand Flat and Tyler, South fields were drilled to a depth greater than 10,000 ft., and the latter field now produces from the Pettit at a depth of 9890 ft. The Sand Flat well was plugged back to the Paluxy. The other two fields are Glen Rose producers near 8000 ft. The Pickton field produces from the Bacon Lime and Winnsboro from the Rodessa section. The Eylau field, Bowie County, was significant as the first Smackover production in Texas. Magnolia drilled a test in the Concord field, which topped salt. The most extensive and significant development in the district was the Carthage gas-condensate field. It expanded from the 8000 acres of last year to an estimated 190,000 acres, or about 300 sq. miles, and is not defined as yet. The first oil production in the Carthage area was made from the Travis Peak in 1944 in the Rogers Lacy's Cameron Lumber Company well No. I, on the northwestern side of the field. The New Hope field, Franklin County, scored the largest number of completions during 1944 with 24, bringing its total number of wells to 27. Two more pays were opened and produced as dual completions with the older horizons. The Manziel field, Wood County, had 19 new wells added during the year, for a total of 29, while the Pittsburgh field, Camp County, reached a total of 23 wells by completing 14 new ones. Material shortages and drilling restrictions dropped the total number of producing wells completed in the district from 171 during 1943 to 141 for 1944. Abandonments increased from 531 during 1943 to 609 for 1944. Of this number, 479 were in the East Texas field. Subsidy payments had very little effect in the district and it was mostly a few of the old fault-line fields that had any wells to fall within the requirements for subsidy payments. The prices of crude oil remained constant in the district except for increases as a result of subsidy payments. Production and Probation Wartime demands called for increased allowables for many fields, consequently the condensate and oil production for 1944 increased to 190,016,180, which is up 6.9 per cent over 1943. The East Texas field, of course, remained the principal producer of the district, accounting for 134,768'499 bbl. during the year, or 71 per cent of the district total production of condensate and oil. The field topped its own 1943 production by 4.8 per cent and became the first field in the world to produce 2 billion barrels of oil. The Hawkins field remained the second largest oil producer in the district, with 13,317,088 bbl. for the year, a drop of 6.8 per cent from 1943, while Van field was third with 11,635,708 bbl. The

THE-report of the advisory committee to the U. S. Bureau of Mines, on the use of oxygen in metallurgy, brings to the art of steelmaking a radical change in the method of operation of the many processes of this widely diversified industry. When completed, the improvements suggested by the use of oxygen will be far-reaching and revolutionary. As to its effect upon the iron blast furnace, the use of oxygen should be as important as any of the improvements in the art of iron smelting and should take its place beside the German "Hochofen" which was the first attempt to use a shaft for preheating the stock, and beside the hot-blast stove which heated the blast before entering the furnace. The former initially produced molten iron and the latter made unbelievable economies in fuel consumption. It would seem that a discussion of this paper would be best served by following the conclusions on page 17 of the report and analyzing them seriatim. 1. (a) A decrease in costs, due to higher smelting heats is only attainable by taking full advantage of these heat units. This is affected by, adding additional ore to the burden which in turn increases production and yields a larger tonnage upon which to figure costs. These economies appear in decreased cost per ton of iron for coke and limestone consumed, and a proportionate reduction in all items entering the cost above materials. We can take no exception to these. premises. It is a well-known fact that silicon in the iron and sulfur removed" are the result of hearth temperature, other matters remaining constant. To a practical furnaceman the most satisfactory manner of controlling a furnace is by increasing the burden. It is not necessary, therefore, to consider the question of refractories, for this discussion presupposes that the temperatures in the furnaces will be kept practically where they now stand for making the various grades of iron. The same situation obtains in regard to the height of the furnace, which, as intimated, was one of the great strides forward in this art, and its abandonment at this time, is inconceivable. The shaft prepares the stock so that at each succeeding step we have exactly the proper conditions. All the stock entering the furnace is dried and preheated. The limestone is calcined by sensible heat practically at no cost, for this is sensible heat which otherwise would pass from the top with the gases. Under normal conditions, external calcination has been attempted without tangible results. PETROLEUM engineers are displaying considerable interest in those fundamental properties of matter and energy that control the phenomena of oil and gas production. The subject is a difficult one to investigate by laboratory experiments for two reasons: (1) it is impossible to reproduce in the laboratory the scale of forces and dimensions that exist in the underground reservoir; (2) if we attempt to scale down the dimensions we are unable to reduce all proportionally. It is as if we tried to construct a model blast furnace for the reduction of iron ore, and reduced all lineal dimensions. We should find that the interstices between the miniature chunks of ore would not .permit rapid transfer of gases, that combustion and heat transfer would not take place as in the full size furnace and that, in short, the contraption would not work. Just so, when we attempt to make a reduced scale oil field we find we must have, not only miniature reservoir and miniature wells, but "miniature" sand, oil, gas, etc. Much valuable work, however, has been done along these experimental lines and more will no doubt follow, but investigators should bear this point in mind and strive to attain dimensional homogeneity and dynamical similarity in order that their conclusions may be translated into terms applying to the oil reservoir. As Gibson says,1 "These conditions are attained when all terms of the physical equation have the same dimensions, . . . when all corresponding particles of the two systems trace out similar paths and when the velocities are such as to make all corresponding forces acting on two such particles in the same ratio. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the mechanics of fluid movement as it pertains to the oil pool and to point out the complexity of the laws of fluid delivery under the conditions often found.

The V system of mining used at the Norton mine of West Virginia Coal & Coke Co. was designed as a modified long wall with face conveyors, for use under roof conditions that would not permit regular long-wall methods. This mine is in the Lower Kittanning seam, which averages about 6 ft. in height. IN previous discussions on stresses in hoisting ropes, little has "been said concerning the effect of the elasticity of the rope itself on the stresses due to acceleration. Laschinger1 has calculated acceleration stresses. for several cases but he has ignored the elasticity of the rope as a factor, except as it compresses the drum and stretches itself as it winds thereon. He also deals with steam plants and he shows the effect of the "jerky" start of the engine. This effect would actually be reduced by the elasticity of the cable. With the advent of the motor-driven hoist, new conditions have arisen. The jerk mentioned by Laschinger has been eliminated and smoother starting made possible. But the elastic properties of the rope seem to introduce considerable periodic acceleration stresses in the rope. The following discussion of acceleration stresses is based on the assumption of a constant acceleration at the drum. To be exact, the mathematical work is based upon the assumption that the top is moving upward with a constant acceleration, and ignores the fact that the cable is shortening as it winds. However, the effect of the shortening would be inconsiderable during the first part of the acceleration period. Most hoisting engineers make the assumption of constant acceleration at the drum. Under the older method of calculating acceleration stresses, this would be true with a constant torque motor. But if stresses vary, as this paper attempts to show that they do, constant torque would not give constant acceleration, although the velocity-time curves obtained in the full size test herein described showed that they approach rather closely to this condition, at least as nearly as could be measured.

This was a year of realization. Some years are for planning and development, some for designing and building, others for fulfillment. With greater hopes and plans for the future than ever before, the year 1954, nevertheless, will be remembered principally because of project completion. Among copper mines, for example, there were Silver Bell, Copper Cities, Bisbee, Yerington, and White Pine. In iron, there were the Humboldt, Coleraine, Cerro Bolivar, and Eagle Mountain. In asbestos, Johns-Manville's new mill at Asbestos, Que. In uranium, completion of the ninth mill on the Colorado Plateau-Kerr-McGee's at Shiprock, N. M. In research, 1954 marked the completion of Kennecott's Research Center in Salt Lake City, one of the historic forward strides in the science of minerals beneficiation. The year was fruitful in other directions as well. Investigations of a fundamental nature were on the upswing, and pilot plant projects have also increased in size and number. Progress in new reagents and equipment was greater than normal. It can already be conservatively predicted-from the technological point of view-that 1955 and 1956 will be tremendous years.

The influence of thermal and mechanical treatments upon the elevated-temperature stability, the microstructure, and the mechanical properties of aluminumaluminum oxide alloys is investigated. Compacts from atomized and flake aluminum powders were sintered at temperatures just below the melting point of aluminum in a vacuum of 10-4 Torr for several hours and were then hot-extruded. During this treatment the hydrated oxide present on the surface of the powder particles decomposes, the water vapor produced reacts with the aluminum forming additional oxide, and the hydrogen developed is removed by diffusion to the surface. Extrusions of compacts so treated are stable at temperatures up to the melting point of aluminum and do not form blisters and internal defects typical of extrusions from untreated powder. Electron micrographs of extrusions from unsintered compacts show long parallel oriented platelets typical of the IN previous investigations1,2 the properties and structure of aluminum alloys were described which had been produced by cold compacting aluminum powder and then hot pressing and extruding the compacts. Both the structure and the properties of these alloys differ significantly from those of commercially produced aluminum-aluminum oxide alloys. When commercial alloys are produced, they are given a sintering treatment in air at about 600°C between cold compacting and hot pressing.3 During this treatment the hydrated oxide, which forms the coating on the aluminum-powder particles from which the alloys are prepared, is decomposed.4 The chemically bound water which is released reacts with the aluminum and forms aluminum oxide and hydrogen. Most of the hydrogen is eliminated by hydrated oxide skins on the original powder particles, while the oxide particles in extrusions from sintered compacts are broken up. The strength of extrusions from treated powder is somewhat lower, but their ductility is considerably improved over that of extrusions from untreated powder. The slip-trace patterns on electron microgvaphs of extrusions which had been strained in tension before replication indicated that the grain size of the extruded alloys was approximately the same as that of the original powder particles. Coarse-grained alloys were produced by severe cold work and annealing of the extrusions. They have significantly lower room-temperature strength, but about the same ductility as the vacuum-sintered fine-grained alloys. The size and shape of oxides in the coarsegrained alloys is similar to those of the fine-grained alloys, but the particles are somewhat more uniformly distributed. diffusing to the interior or exterior surfaces of the compact, but it is difficult to eliminate all of it because the solubility of hydrogen in solid aluminum is very low even near its melting point. Extruded alloys which are not sintered before hot pressing and extrusion appear quite sound upon metallo-graphic examination, but develop severe surface blistering and internal fissuring when they are heated to elevated temperatures after extrusion. Fissures and blisters have been observed even in commercial alloys which had been sintered in air, although they are much less severe.' Because of the importance of this sintering treatment it was studied in this investigation in a modified form, using vacuum sintering rather than sintering in air, to insure more complete elimination of occluded hydrogen. The technique is described and the effect of the treatment upon the structure of the alloys is documented. It has been known for some time that extruded aluminum-aluminum oxide alloys are very finegrained, but an exact delineation of grains in electron micrographs has not been possible. SILICOSIS is a term known to almost everyone today. Yet, in spite of a great deal of study, much is still to be learned regarding the disease. Government organizations are still continuing their investigations, begun near Joplin, Mo., 25 years ago. Work is also being done in several universities, as Harvard, Pennsylvania, Rochester, and Toronto, and at least two private organizations, the Air Hygiene Foundation of America, Inc., and the Saranac Laboratories for the Study of Tuberculosis, devote most of their time to this subject. Similar studies have been and are being made in many other countries.

MAGNETITE mining and milling in the Eastern States was sharply curtailed in 1938, production showing a decrease of 36 per cent from 1936 and 57 per cent from 1937. Six mines, one in Pennsylvania, two in New York, and three in New Jersey were in operation, either part or full time, during the year. In recent years ten Eastern magnetite mines have been more or less active but since the World War the market for Eastern ores- has been spotty. The scrapping of Eastern merchant pig iron furnaces, imports of cheaply mined duty-free foreign ore, and high freight cost have been contributing factors.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) THE plant and quarries of the Inland Portland Cement Co. are located at Metaline Falls, Wash., about 128 miles north of Spokane, on the Pend Oreille river, and within 10 miles of the Canadian border. The plant is one of a chain of cement plants controlled by the Lehigh Portland Cement Co., of Allentown, Pa. Work on this plant was commenced in June, 1910, and was completed in April, 1911, but on account of some delays in 'the construction of the power plant, the works were not put into operation until August, 1911. Since then it has been in continuous operation and has furnished the Inland Empire with a high grade of cement. Fig. I is a view and Fig. 2 is a plan of the works. Water Power Development.-The source of the water supply for the hydro-electric plant of the Inland Portland Cement Co. is Sullivan lake, a body of water approximately 5.5 miles long and 0.5 mile wide, situated in the Kaniksu Forest Reserve. A wooden crib dam was installed so as to raise the elevation of the lake 25 ft., and the additional storage capacity was taken up by the diversion of Sullivan creek into the lake by means of a wooden flume, 0.25 mile long, 6 by S ft. in cross-section, and a ditch 1,200 ft. long. The water from the lake follows the natural water course to an intermediate storage reservoir, which was created by the construction of an earthen dam. This pond wits used in connection with the saw mill which was installed at this point. Besides the earth dam, there was also built a crib, at the point shown in the sketch map, Fig. 3. This crib dam is 35 ft. high. From this point the excess water follows the natural course of Sullivan creek to the Pend Oreille river.

VERY few thermodynamic data are available for rare-earth alloys, partly because of the difficulties of obtaining the metals in sufficiently pure form and also because of their comparative scarcity up to the present time. The rare earths form a very interesting series in the periodic table in view of the progressive filling of their 4f subvalence electron shell and would be expected to provide useful information with regard to alloying characteristics of transition elements. It has been found in recent calorimetric investigations that the heats of solution of a number of the rare-earth metals in liquid tin are highly exothermic.1-4 Exceptionally strong bonding between rare-earth and tin atoms is clearly indicated in the liquid solutions. Continued thermodynamic studies of the behavior of rare earths in solution could thus contribute a great deal to present theoretical knowledge of alloying behavior and would yield an insight into bonding of a strength hitherto unencountered in liquid alloys. The determination of the heats of solution of the pure components in liquid tin is an essential preliminary to calorimetric work of this nature. Heats of solution of praseodymium, neodymium, and samarium in liquid tin at 750" ' and the heats of mixing of Pr-Nd solid solutions' have already been determined in this laboratory. The present investigations with lanthanum continue the study of rare-earth elements. Details of the construction and operation of the liquid metal solution calorimeter used in this work have been published previously by Pool and Peluso and no further description will be given here. The lanthanum used in heat of solution determinations was supplied by Lunex who quoted the purity as 99.9 pct. Their detailed analysis of the material is given in Table I. Samples of 0.0003 to 0.0005 g-atom were used for each run and great care was taken to remove all surface oxide prior to weighing. The samples were stored at all other times in a beaker of oil to prevent their otherwise rapid oxidation. The compounds LaSn (Cudu, L1P type structure) and La&, (structure not classified) were prepared from the appropriate quantities of the two pure components by arc melting under a purified argon atmosphere and once again great precautions were taken to avoid any subsequent oxidation of the specimens. Although no structural examination of the compounds was made, the consistency of thermodynarnic measurements carried out on twenty or so individual samples of each indicates that the compounds were in fact homogeneous, single phase alloys. Samples of the compounds consisting of 0.0003 to 0.002 moles were used in the calorimetric measurements. A solvent bath consisting of approximately 80 g of 99.9 pct pure Sn was used for each series of runs and its heat capacity was determined at regular intervals throughout the experiments using pure tin or tungsten calibration samples. Measurements were made of the heat of solution of lanthanum in liquid tin at 725", 750C, and 775°K and at compositions up to 2.21, 4.76, and 5.25 at. pct La at the three temperatures respectively. In every case, the heat of solution of lanthanum remained constant at its limiting value, within experimental limits, up to the highest lanthanum concentration investigated. For a great many years fusion welding has been used in and around petroleum refineries, but it is only within six or seven years that the more important pressure vessels have been constructed by this process, because before that time the properties of fusion welds would not with-stand such rigorous service. Since the adoption of fusion welding for the construction of this equipment, the refiner has required pressure vessels suitable for operation over a very wide range of conditions. On the one hand, vessels must operate at extremely high temperatures, in the range of 950° to 1000° F., and on the other vessels must be suitable for operation at sub-zero temperatures down as low as -75° F. Also, vessels are required suitable for operation at pressures upwards of 1000 lb. per sq. in., and as low as a 29-in. vacuum. In addition, vessels are required to withstand the attack of very corrosive mediums. It has been a rather difficult task for the fabricator to meet all of these require-ments, but as a result of the extensive research carried on by steel manu-facturers and several fabricators of class I vessels, practically all of these demands have been met. In order to meet the refiners' requirements for this wide range of conditions, the fabricator has worked closely with the metallurgist. This has enabled him to choose the proper base metal for each service condition, but it has been the fabricator's problem to develop a welding rod and welding technique, as well as a heat-treatment, that would produce in the welded vessel characteristics in and around the weld comparable to those in the base metal. Where corrosion is not a serious problem, and where the operating temperatures are not too high, ordinary carbon steel has served very well. But when corrosion is serious, and/or when the temperatures are either very high or very low, it is necessary to use some form of alloy steel to give satisfactory service.

The effect of new discoveries and development of other pools recently discovered is reflected in the increase in production from 586,000 bbl. during 1940 to 758,000 bbl. during 1941 in Coleman County. The States Oil Company's No. I Hudson, Coleman County, was the discovery well of the Silver field, with a total depth of 3540 ft.; initial production, 10,000,000 cu. ft. of dry gas and 60 bbl. of oil per day from the Gray sand, topped at 3482 ft. The first well drilled in the new Jim Ned field was the Merry Bros. and Perini No. I Greer, also in Coleman County. It had a total depth of 3937 ft. and an initial production of 152 bbl. of 42" gravity oil in 6 hr., through I-in. choke, from Gray sand encountered from 3909 to 3937 feet. J. E. Farrell's No. I Rose, Haskell County, was a new discovery, around which no additional wells have been drilled. Total depth was 3002 ft., plugged back to 2780 ft. to test an oil sand encountered from 2663 to 2685 ft., which when perforated with 76 shots at that depth was good for 85 bbl. of 40" gravity oil. In Fisher County, General Crude drilled its No. 12 Flanagan to a total depth of 6746 ft. After plugging back to 4578 ft. to test a sand encountered from 4515 to 4528 ft. it was abandoned as a dry hole. The top of the Ellenburger was reported as 6094 feet. Interest in Jones County continued unabated, largely through the development of the Wimberly pool in the southern part of the county, where five Cisco sands are producing. At present the pool has been defined on the south and the southwest. The structure has 170 ft. of closure; the lower limestone pays producing on top of the structure and the fist pay encountered, the Akard sand, producing on the flanks of the structure. Five deep wells were drilled in Stonewall County (H. and T.C. survey)—the Shell Oil Company's No. I-A Patterson, in block D, with a total depth of 6827 ft., dry and abandoned; the Shell Oil Company's No. I Rutherford, block I, with a total depth of 6239 ft., dry and abandoned; the Leader Oil Company's No. I Bilberry, block D, with a total depth of 5700 ft., dry and abandoned; Forest Development Company's No. 2 Boyd, block D, with a total depth of 4753 ft., dry and abandoned; and the Hunter et al. No. I Boyd, block D, total depth 4757 ft., dry and abandoned. J. E. Farrell drilled his No. I Tipton south of a well that produced from a Strawn sand for some time, to a total depth of 5202 ft., where it was abandoned. The well is in the southwest corner of sec. 43, block 19, T. and P. survey, Nolan County.

A modification of the Mendenhall wedge blackbody1 has been used to determine solidus temperatures and to anneal alloys in the tantalum-rhenium binary system. The technique has proven to be simple and accurate with modest power requirements. For temperatures up to 2800° C a piece of 10-mil tantalum sheet was folded double and formed as shown in Fig. 1. The middle of the resulting ribbon filament was a cylindrical-shaped crucible with less than a 1/8-in. opening. After inserting a specimen in the cavity, the filament was clamped between molybdenum electrodes in a high vacuum chamber. A representative filament 2 in. long and % in. deep was heated to 2800°C with a current of 700 amp at 4 v. The specimen temperature was determined by sighting into the cavity with a Leeds and Northrup optical pyrometer. The twisted filament shape was necessary to avoid serious geometric changes during thermal expansion. For temperatures between 2800" and 3000°C a 4-mil tungsten filament was employed. To facilitate fabrication it was warm-folded, and a twisted segment of 10-mil tantalum was used to support one end to absorb thermal expansion. This element assembly required about 700 amp at 10 v to reach 3000°C. Two geometric modifications of the filament were helpful for solidus temperature determinations. A shallow chamber, with depth to opening ratio of 3 to 1, permitted direct observation of the specimen through the optical pyrometer. The fact that the specimen was visible permitted the melting point to be determined when sharp features on the specimen surface became rounded; it also indicated that blackbody conditions did not prevail. By standardizing against the melting point of molybdenum, the observed melting temperature was corrected by the following form of Wien's Law: in which T is the true temperature, To is the observed temperature, and K is a constant characteristic of the filament geometry and determined experimentally for the molybdenum standard. The resulting corrected melting point for each alloy served as a reference temperature for the second more precise filament geometry. With a 6 to 1 depth to opening ratio, the specimen was indistinguishable from the filament interior, indicating good blackbody conditions. Using this technique, a series of specimens was isothermally treated at temperatures above and below the corrected direct reading. Incipient melting was detected by visual or micrographic examination of the specimen after cooling. This procedure was checked with specimens of pure chromium, molybdenum, and tantalum. Table I represents the values obtained, together with the solidus temperatures in the tantalum-rhenium binary system determined by the same technique. The alloy specimens were approximately 1/8 in. in diam. They were pieces of 10-g buttons melted four times in a nonconsumable tungsten electrode arc furnace on a water cooled copper hearth in 2/3 atmos of titanium gettered helium. Several sources of error are possible in such temperature measurements. Within the accuracy of the pyrometer no gradients were detectable near the specimen, and element distortion was virtually eliminated by twisting the tantalum. Compensation was made for the 1/8-in. sight glass by inserting several identical thicknesses and extrapolating to zero thickness. As a result an additional 10°C correction was added to all observations in the temperature range of 2500" to 3000°C. The principal source of error was then in the operation of the

AT Kellogg, Idaho, J. Fred Johnson is driving the 5000.-ft Hooper Tunnel under contract for the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining Co. This was visited by a group of engineers during the recent meeting of the A. I. M. E. at Spokane, who were impressed with several features of the work. An excellent record of advance is being made by the contractor, over 47 ft. being driven in 3 days during October, and 223 ft. advanced in 29 shifts. The size of the tunnel is 8 by 9 ft. The ground is Wallace quartzite and, save for the first hundred feet, stands well and does not require timbering. The grade is held uniformly at 0.5 per cent. Two shifts are employed, with two sets of machine men to the shift. Ingersoll-Rand S-70 drills are used. each machine being set up independently in the heading; 26-30 holes are drilled to the round; using 1 1/4: in. round hollow drill steel. A 7-hole cut is required, and these holes are blasted simultaneously, using 60 per cent gelatine, 12 sticks to the hole. Instantaneous and fire delays of electric detonators are used for the complete round. A feature of the drilling is the use of long carriage drills, necessitating fewer changes of steel, and more time spent on drilling, with less time consumed taking steel back and forth from the face. Of course, this means better blacksmithing so that the drill steel shall stand up for the added footage.
