PLANS are well matured for the joint meeting of the Coal Division and the Ohio Section of the Institute at Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 27 and 28, at which a large attendance is expected. The proceedings for a day and a half will be devoted largely to the uses of coal, the program providing for two technical sessions in the auditorium of Battelle Memorial Institute (505 King Ave.) on Friday, and various plant inspec¬tions on Saturday morning. By way of diversion on Saturday afternoon arrangements have been made for attendance en bloc at the football game between Ohio State and Northwestern, 100 seats having been reserved for the game at $2.40 each-as long as they last. An inventory of the high lights of the meeting would be incomplete without reference to the informal banquet at the Deshler-Wallick hotel on Friday evening, for which Eli T. Conner, Chairman of the Coal Division, is down for a talk, and Howard N. Eavenson, Vice-president of the Institute, will be the principal speaker. The program in detail is as follows:

Secondary or scrap materials appear at all stages in the industrial process and in a bewildering variety of forms, grades, and values. It is useful to begin analyzing them by dividing the broad concept of "Secondary Supply" into three parts First, the concept must encompass the stock, or pool, of secondary materials. In the process of satisfying his wants, man produces desired products from the materials and natural resources found around him. As long as the rate of production is greater than the rate of obsolescence of a given product, the total stock or pool of materials embodied in that product will increase in size This stock concept relating to secondary materials is directly analogous to the "resource" concept used for primary raw materials in the preceding chapter, and includes all materials embodied in existing products (Obviously, this excludes those materials which are destroyed in the consumption process, viz , fuel oil burned to provide heat.) Consumption of a primary material in a productive process tends to reduce the resource base of that primary material In direct contrast, however, the production or use of products increases the resource base of the secondary material. Thus, we find that a country which has no resource of a primary material can, by importing products that contain the material, build up a large enough stock to provide a basis for secondary recovery. The estimated growth of the pool of copper in use in the United States through 1967 is shown in Table 5.B.1.a The estimate of 39 3 million tons at the end of 1967 includes only technologically recoverable copper and is, therefore, somewhat less than the stock concept described previously, which does not distinguish between recoverable and unrecoverable material. Nevertheless, Table 5 B.1 does give an idea of how a nation's secondary resource of a material can grow over the years. A second aspect of the concept of secondary supply is the generation of secondary materials. This includes materials generated as scrap in production as well as the movement of a material out of the stock of existing products via wear, damage, or obsolescence The quantity of materials generated is usually either nearly or completely independent of the technologic capabilities and economic forces which prevail in the secondary recovery market.b The justifications for and the qualifications to this statement are considered later. The final aspect of the concept of secondary supply consists in the secondary recovery process It is at this point that the technologic and economic forces of the secondary recovery market become the controlling fac-

An evaluation has been made of the relative importance of yield strength (?) and stacking-fault energy (y) to the rate of fatigue-crack growth in materials of fcc structure. Pure copper and its solid-solution al-loys with aluminum and nickel were chosen for the study because they provided sufficient range in both quantities of interest that either could be varied independently of the other. Experiments involved alternating tension and compression of flat specimens which were prepared with sharpened internal notches so that most, if not all, of the crack-nucleation interval could be eliminated. Growth rate (dC/dN) was concluded to be proportional to the square of the plastic-strain amplitude (€,,) over a strain range of approximately 6x 10-4 to 6 x 10-3. The factor, k, linking dC/dN and ep in dC/dN = kEp2 increased and decreased with corresponding variations in y, but it did not respond syste?>/atically to change in ay, indicating that y is the significant variable in crack growth at constant plastic-strain amplitude. In polycrystalline material, k varied by a factor of 5 over the available range of y. In a few single-crystal experiments on Cu-A1 alloys the growth rate responded less strongly to change in y. It has been suggested that single crystals behave somewhat differently than poly crystalline material because there is more extetnsive substructure near the grain boundaries in the latter, and this facilitates crack advance by separation along subgrain boundaries. A point of some controversy in current work on fatigue relates to the effects of strength and stacking-fault energy on crack growth. In recent experiments a separation was made between the cycling intervals for crack nucleation and the subsequent growth that eventually ends a specimen's fatigue life.' The study was carried out on Cu-A1 alloys primarily, fatigued in alternating four-point bending to constant deflection. A nucleation interval of about 10' cycles (at a total strain amplitude = 0.2 pct) was found to be insensitive to aluminum content in the range 0 to 7.5 wt pct, while the growth period was increased approximately forty fold over the same compositional range. The increase was not in any sense linear, however. Rather, most of the change occurred below 4 pct A1 or a stacking-fault energy, ?, of about 15 ergs per sq cm. It was argued that the plastic-strain amplitude was approximately constant, and therefore the effect of composition must have grown out of the reduction in stacking-fault energy. Several studies have shown that, with high ?, cross slip is encouraged, subgrain structure is introduced during fatigue, and cracking is aided through propagation along subgrain boundaries.1-5 Therefore, lowering ? sufficiently to interfere with substructure formation would be expected to retard growth rate. On the other hand, it is a general rule that resistance to fatigue cracking increases as strength is raised. Accordingly, there might still have been some doubt that Y was the controlling variable, since strength would be increased as y was lowered by the aluminum additions. To help in dispelling that doubt, an experiment was made on a polycrystalline Cu-Ni alloy similar in strength to the Cu-A1 alloys but of higher ?; the crack-growth interval was found to be essentially that of pure copper.' Further support for this position on stacking-fault energy as it relates to crack growth is derived from work by Boettner and McEvily,6 in which the actual crack-growth rate was measured on samples previously notched so as to minimize the nucleation period. Unfortunately, it was necessary in isolating strength level to compare different alloy systems and grain sizes. Recognizing the complication, it was still concluded that growth may be retarded by a reduction in y, per se. A related study has also been made by Roberson and Grosskreutz.7 The zinc content of a brass was systematically changed to alter strength and stack-ing-fault energy, although not below the 15 ergs per sq cm at which pronounced change in growth interval was found in the earlier work. The results were limited to more or less conventional S-N diagrams so that nucleation and growth events could not be separated. No definite conclusions were drawn, but

DURING the latter part of the year 1931, the Republic mine of the Republic Steel Corporation, at Republic, about 4 miles south of Browns-ville, Pa., was mining coal along four rib or fracture lines. One of these lines, the west butt rib line, was retreating towards a concrete-lined air shaft, 320 ft. deep, which had been sunk in 1911 for ventilation purposes. With the normal rate of mining at that time, it was expected that this rib line would pass the shaft in three or four months and the shaft would then be abandoned and allowed to cave. Realizing the opportunity presented for the study of an unusual case of ground movement, the question of conducting the study was presented by the junior author to the chairman of the Institute's committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence, Mr. George S. Rice, who presented the matter to Mr. G. H. Morse, General Manager of the Northern Mines, Republic Steel Corpora-tion, and he agreed to cooperate with the Bureau of Mines in making the study, the results of which are presented in this paper. A pronounced thermal effect has been observed on heating or cooling a1wninum-rich Al-U and Al-Pu alloys. From microscopic and X-ray diffractionstudies, the effectl has been attributed to trnsfor)nations in the inlemetallic phases UAl, and PuAl , involuing rearrangement or cluslering of vacancies The transformation obsrved in Al-20 wi oct U alloys occurred near the a Al-UAl4 eutectic tem-perature of 646°C making it difjicult to detect from heating curves. When cooling, howeoer, thermal mad X-ray analyses indicnted that the high-temperati~re phase labeled p UAL, precipitated initially during euitectic solidification. As solidification continued and after an induction period o-f 5 lo 20 tnin the nu-cleatiorz and growth of the low- twmperature phase, a UAl4 produced an euolution of energy which raised the observed alloy temperature by 1° to 2°C. in Al-Pu alloys the transformation occurred at 645°C, 5 deg below the eutectic solidification temperccture. The eslimated latent heat of transformation was 25 +5 cnl per g PuAl,. The high-tetnpevcl-ture forms of UAl, and PuAl, were easily 9-etccined by chill casting Al-U and Al-Pu alloys and on reheating the alloys the trcltzsforrnation to the a phase was sluggish even above 600°C. Separated single cryslals o-f UAl4, joy example, showed no evidence Of transformalion after heating for 16 hr at 620°C. The transformation rates increased yapidly enough with increasing temperature, however, that a a spontaneous liberation of energy lens observed on occasion when bealing cast Al-20 wt pet U to neal- the RECENT phase studies on A1-Pu alloys have indicated that earlier reported equilibrium diagrams should be modified to take account of several poly- morphic transformations in the intermetallic compound PuAl,.' During the course of the latter work an unexpected heat evolution was observed while cooling a solid alloy consisting of a mixture of a aluminum and PuA1,. The evolution occurred at 645°C, y below the a A1-Pu A1, eutectic solidification temperature. Subsequent thermal-analysis experiments with A1-U alloys showed that heat was evolved there also at a temperature nearly coincident with the a A1-UA1, eutectic solidification temperature of 646°. A search of the literature revealed that similar thermal effects had been observed before for both A1-U and A1-Pu but had never been fully explained.2,3 The purpose of the present paper is to describe thermal-analysis and X-ray diffraction experiments which have led to the conclusion that the thermal effects are due to transformations which involve the rearrangement of vacancies in the intermetallic compounds UA1, and PuA1,. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The A1-U alloys were prepared by heating super-pure aluminum (99.99 pct +) obtained from the Aluminum Co. of Canada in a graphite crucible surrounded by an induction coil. At 1000°C high-purity uranium metal produced by the Eldorado Mining and Refining Co., Ltd. was dropped into the liquid aluminum and was dissolved completely within 15 min. The impurities in the uranium were A1—4 ppm, Ca-4, C-70, Cr-3, Cu-6, Fe-30, Mg-2, Mn-10, Ni-25, Si-25, and Zn-2. The A1-Pu alloys were prepared by reacting plutonium dioxide with liquid aluminum under cryolite (3 NaF . AlF,) for 10 min at 1100°C in graphite crucibles exposed to the air. The plutonium was 99.8 pct pure, containing trace impurities of Ca, Cu, Fe, Pb, Si, and Zn. The liquid alloys were usually poured into water-cooled molds to provide castings of uniform composition from which samples could be cut for heat treatment and thermal-analysis experiments.

Because common salt, sodium chloride, is necessary to all animal and much plant life, it is probably the most widely used of all mineral commodities, except for water. Nevertheless, of the total salt consumed, only 7% is used for food, including animal food. Two-thirds of the total is used as chemical raw material, principally for making such basic chemicals as chlorine, caustic soda, and soda ash. Other uses are for road thawing (16%) and water softening. Some 162.5 million tons of salt were used, worldwide, in 1972 (Table 15.4F.1). Production is from bedded salt deposits, salt domes, and evaporation of brines, including solar evaporation of seawater. Production is worldwide from at least 20 countries, of which the United States, China, USSR, the United Kingdom, and West Germany are the leaders. Consumption increases about 7 % annually. Reserves are plentiful: Other important sodium salts are soda ash (sodium carbonate) and salt cake (sodium sulfate). Soda ash comes mainly from the Solvay process (70% ) , which uses salt, limestone, and ammonia as raw materials. A large and growing portion of United States production is from mining large bedded deposits of trona, a natural hydrated sodium carbonate and bicarbonate found in Wyoming, and from brine evaporation in California. Soda ash is used for glassmaking, phenol, soap, detergents, and bleaches. Half of the United States salt cake used is a byproduct from rayon manufacturing. The other half comes from brines and playa lakes in California, Texas, and Wyoming. Salt cake is used mainly for papermaking. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Appreciation is expressed to William B. INTRODUCTION BELT conveyors generally are conceded to be the most economical method yet devised for the transportation of large quantities of bulk materials within plants. Belts are coming into greater use for transportation over long distances and are replacing other forms of long-haul conveyance. It is not the intent of the writer to comment on the design of belt conveyors, but to offer some suggestions for improvement in the operation of conveying belts, based on many years experience with belts in several stonecrushing plants. It is the contention of this writer that opportunities for improvement not fully realized by most operators exist in many plants and that a study of the individual conveyors can result in lower unit belt costs. GENERAL RELIABILITY It is the fool-proof nature and general reliability of the belt conveyor that is responsible for its neglect. Even when abused, a belt will carry large tonnages and last a long time, often outlasting the personnel responsible for its care. Some operators look upon the purchase of a new belt as an expensive outlay every so many years, rather than a constant and steady cost amounting in belt wear alone to several dollars every operating day. This belt wear for all conveyors in one stone-crushing plant known by the writer costs 1 1/2 cents per ton or $12 to $15 per hour, based on the present cost of belt replacements. The fact that these replacement costs are double those of prewar quality emphasizes the necessity of improving the conditions that make belts wear out. Some of those conditions are the responsibility of the conveyor designer, and if a serious original error has been made, this handicap cannot be overcome by the operator. If the belt is too narrow, too steep, or too fast for good loading, the operator finds that he has an inherently expensive belt. The other factors that decrease the life of a belt are more or less under his control. The two factors of most importance are the loading conditions and the alignment. Most of the cover wear and carcass cutting occurs at the loading point and if the alignment is not good under all conditions, edge wear or damage may result, Fig I. LOADING THE BELT It is difficult to load a belt in an ideal manner; that is, to flow the material on the moving belt at a steady rate, without impact, without turbulence, and with a velocity equal to and in the same direction as the belt. An inclined belt is especially difficult to load and particularly when its speed is over 300 or 350 fpm. Inclined conveyors require longer skirt plates to prevent spillage until the load settles. It does not seem reasonable to expect an inclined conveyor to carry the same load as a horizontal belt of the same width and speed, because of the difficulty in loading

The surface tension of zinc has been determined by the sessile-drop method in a progvam emphaszzing detailed experimental care. The surface tension oj. the pure metal was measured over a range of ternperature from the melting point (419.6"C) to 540°C. At the melting point, the suvface tension of zinc was found to be: 1) 99.99+ pct Zn - 757.0 5 dynes per cm 2) 99.999+ pct Zn - 761.0 5 dynes per CI 3) 99.9999 pct Zn - 76'7.5 5 dynes pev cna From experiments carried out in a closed, isothermal cell, the temperatuve coejyicient of the surface tension (6y/6T)p, , of zinc xas found not to be negative but to be postiue. A positive tenzperatre coefficient indicates a greater depee of order in the surface than in the body of the lquid. Houlezer, by delibevately inducing continuous zaporization, a temperature coefficient of su)face tension with a negative slope can be produced. The work reported herein was undertaken as part of a larger program of fundamental research on the properties of molten zinc and zinc alloys. This program grew out of a continuing interest at the Mines Branch in the behavior of liquid metals in the foundry and of a desire on the part of the zinc industry for reliable basic data. The work was originally begun in cooperation with the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd., Trail, B.C., and was subsequently continued from 1960 to date in association with the Canadian Zinc and Lead Research Committee and the International Lead and Zinc Research Organization. Although the surface tension of liquid zinc has of course, been measured before, as Table I and Fig. 1 demonstrate, there is not good agreement among the existing values. Such disparities arise because sources of experimental error are insufficiently controlled. This situation places the reader in doubt. One result may be correct within narrow limits—even fortuitously—yet, because there is not agreement between several values, none can be accepted with conviction and all become suspect. It seemed, therefore, in the circumstances, that there was room for further work embodying considerable emphasis on experimental care in order that, within a small margin of error, an accurate value might be obtained. It was in this spirit that the work was undertaken. METHOD The sessile-drop method -as adopted for this work. In this method, when applied to liquid metals at elevated temperatures, the outline of the meridional section through a drop resting freely on a horizontal surface is recorded photographically. Creep of very coarse grained high purity aluminum was studied at 400°, 700°, and 1100°F at initial stresses of 50 to 1200 psi. Local strain measurements were made across the grain boundaries and in different regions of various grains during creep, thereby permitting the drawing of component creep curves. The relative amounts of elongation as measured across a grain boundary and in the grains adjacent to the boundary depend on the temperature of testing. The significance of creep curve equations and activation energies is discussed. THIS paper presents some of the results of a research program devoted to the study of the mechanism of creep in high purity aluminum. Previous publications have dealt with the cyclic processes of alternating grain boundary sliding and migration, and the deformation in the grains caused by these processes;' the direction and the driving force of grain boundary sliding and migration;' the deformation in the grains and the restricting effects of the grain boundaries on this deformation." These previous papers were based mainly on either microscopic observations or X-ray data, or both. Sometimes creep curves across two closely spaced reference marks (about 0.6 to 0.7 mm apart) were also presented with a view to correlating the elongation values with the optical observations in general, and with certain deformation processes in particular. These curves shall henceforth be referred to as component creep curves. No attempts were made, however, to compare either the component creep curves which were obtained in different regions of a specimen, or those obtained from different specimens subjected to different creep test conditions. It is the purpose of this paper to present these component creep curves. Among the factors influencing the behaviors of these curves, those studied were stress, temperature, and grain arrangements in the specimens. It is proposed to show how greatly the deformation can vary from grain to grain and within an individual grain in a coarse grained specimen. The experimental technique and procedure have been presented.' It remains necessary to emphasize that the reference marks were produced by pressing a thin sewing needle into the surface of the specimen before the final annealing at 900°F for 24 hr and at 1150°F for 12 hr. The cold work around the needle indentations was therefore removed. The depth of these holes after electropolishing the annealed specimens was about 0.01 mm. This depth and area were negligible in comparison with the thickness of the specimens, 2.3 mm, and hence would not affect the creep behavior. Results Fig. 1 shows a development diagram of specimen P-8. The dots on the surface locate the needle point reference marks used to obtain the component creep curves. A curve obtained between two dots across a grain boundary measures not only the boundary deformation but also the deformation associated with boundary sliding occurring in the grains in the region between these indents. The original distance between two reference marks was about 0.6 to 0.7 mm. The maximum error of measurement was 0.01 mm, or in terms of percentage elongation, of the order of & 1.5 pct. Whereas the component creep curves shown in the figures to follow were drawn as a gross average of the points, in view of the fineness of some of the steps of grain boundary sliding and migration, as shown in the previous publications,¹,2 it appears logical to expect that some of the finer cycles of movement have not been delineated for the strain sensitivity of the measuring system. It seems justifiable to say that the curves are not as smooth as shown. 700°F Tests: Fig. 2 shows component creep curves across four of the grain boundaries in specimen P-8, tested at 700°F and 85 psi. THE GROUND now being worked by the Fairbanks Exploration Co., near Fairbanks, Alaska, has been known to be gold bearing since 1901. In the early days it was worked by drift mining and other small-scale methods. In 1922, Hammond started prospecting the gold-bearing ground and obtaining options on the properties desired. Two years later the present Fairbanks Exploration Co. started taking up the options, and preparing to exploit the ground. For the prospect drilling Keystone drills were used, with holes at the points of equilateral triangles 600 ft. apart. Holes were also put down more closely spaced to determine the limits of dredging ground. In the first drilling casing was used to the bottom of the holes, but in later work the casing was put down only to the bottom of the thawed ground, and the rest of the hole put down without casing. The gold content was determined by panning, each 2 ft. of depth being determined separately. Where no casing was used the size of the hole was determined by using water to measure its volume. The greatest concentration of gold occurs at or near bedrock. All the gold-bearing streams head in one big dome. Gold, however, is not found clear to the head of the creeks, the pay being first found some distance downstream from the head.

In a recent paper, Rawdon and Mutchlerl gave some exceptionally interesting results on the Brinell and scratch hardness of severely cold-worked metals. In their work, they found that, on continued cold rolling, the metal hardened up to a particular point and then reversed and became softer; this was true for both Brinell and scratch hardness values. The generally reported behavior2 of metals, with respect to Brinell tests on cold-worked material, is that the metals harden up to a certain point and then, on further cold rolling, no change in Brinell hardness occurs. Jeffries and Archer3 state that there is little difference between the scratch hardness of annealed and cold-worked metals; the work of Faust and Tammann4 also indicated no difference between the hardness of annealed and cold-worked copper. Rawdon and Mutchler found, when they plotted the reduction ratio (initial thickness divided by thickness after rolling) against the hardness value for the cold-rolled material, that the hardness number increased up to a reduction ratio of about 3 and then decreased and became even smaller than that for the annealed metal. This behavior was reported for both scratch and Brinell hardness; Figs. 1 and 2 show their results for Brinell hardness on the metals for which they published data. This is an exceptionally interesting phenomenon, if it occurs under all conditions of rolling, and would have an important bearing on the practice of cold

The kinetics of re crystallization and the effect of recovery on recrystallization of pure iron were investigated within the temperature range of 517" to 632 OC. Grain growth and activation energies were also studied. Two stages can be distinguished during recrystallization; the first is gvowth-controlled and the second is nucleation-controlled. The extent to which the first stage succeeds before the second stage begins depends on both temperature of recrystallization and temperature of recovery. The softening of cold-worked metals and alloys due to transformation of the deformed crystals to strain-free equiaxed grains during annealing is well-known, and early inestiators established that recrystallization kinetics is strongly influenced by minute quantities of impurities. Generally, it is believed that impurities decrease the rate of recrystallization and the rate of grain growth. To understand the basic phenomena of recrystallization, investigations should be on pure materials. Most of the research on high-purity materials has been on metals having the fee Bcc materials, and especially high-purity iron, have been studied only in recent years. It is known that recovery may influence recrystalliation;" however, no general description of the influence, applicable to all materials, has been presented. This paper presents results of a study of the recrystallization kinetics of high-purity iron, after 60 pct cold deformation by drawing, with particular reference to the influence of recovery on the rates of recrystallization and grain growth. From observations of these rates, conclusions are drawn concerning nucleation. MATERIAL AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Preparation of Material. High-purity iron, prepared by zone refining of vacuum-melted electroiytic iron at Battelle Memorial Institute under sponsorship of the American Iron and Steel Institute, was used in this study. Table I gives the reported chemical analysis of the material, taken at a point near the last molten zone and thereby rep- resenting the maximum impurity level for the entire bar. Prismatic specimens, approximately 10 x 10 X 50 mm, were sawed from the 50-mm-diam bar, perpendicular to the zone-refining direction, and turned to cylindrical shape. These specimens were sealed in quartz capsules under vacuum, approximately 10"e mm Hg, austenitized at 930° C for 15 min, slowly cooled, removed from the capsules, and cold-worked in air by swaging to approximately 20-pct reduction of area. The encapsulating, austenitizing, and swaging operations were repeated two additional times, after which the samples were encapsulated, austenitized, and cold-drawn to 60-pct reduction of area. A further vacuum anneal at 630°C for 120 min and cold drawing to 60-pct reduction of area produced wire 2.8 mm in diameter. The drawn wire was electropolished to remove deformed material on the surface, after which it was sawed into 4-mm-long specimens for the recrystallization study. Microscopical examination before the final cold reduction revealed equiaxed grain structure with very fine grains in a thin layer near the surfaces of the specimen and nearly uniform ASTM 3-4 grain size in the center. Recrystallization Heat Treatment. a) Direct Recrystallization of Cold-Worked The 60 pct cold drawn iron specimens were recrystallized at five temperatures, 517, 556, 590°, 612, and 632C, in a lead bath covered with graphite (the temperature was controlled to 1°C). Specimens were treated for twelve different times at each temperature, and all were water-quenched after heat &eatment. b) Recrystallization Following Preliminary Recovery Heat Treatment. After cold working, specimens were sealed into quartz capsules under vacuum, 105 mm Hg, and recovery-annealed at 362", 400", and 440°C for 20 hr prior to recrystallization. No evidence of recrystallization was found

THE Simon-Carves washer, originally known as the Baum jig washer, was first built in Europe about 1892. It was probably the first washer to use intermittent pressure of air on water in one part of the wash box to obtain water pulsations in another part. This type of washer was also the first to successfully clean various sizes in the same unit. Previous practice was to size closely before washing. Today there are several large firms abroad, and a few in the United States, that are constructing the Baum type washer. The design of all is practically the same, their differences being only in details. In 1928, the Hanna Coal Co. first gave consideration to the question of coal cleaning. It was believed at that time that by efficient removal of so-called noncombustibles appearing in the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam, certain markets that had been lost due to poor preparation might be recovered. Mechanical cleaning and mechanical loading were under consideration. This type of cleaning was considered the most practical means of removing impurities in the sizes below 4 in. It was decided to adopt mechanical cleaning and develop a system of mechanical loading that would be successful on No. 8 coal.

THE instrument about to be described meets so perfectly the special needs of the metal microscopist that there seems to be little doubt but its merits must be readily appreciated by those who have had any experience in the microscopical examination of metals. The Microscope-Stand.-The microscope-stand proper, Fig. 1, consists of a microscope-tube, provided with both coarse and fine adjustments of the best construction, and with a draw-tube, rigidly mounted on a bar supported at both ends on substantial and firm cast-iron legs. The height between the table and the under side of the supporting bar is 5 in. and the distance between the supporting legs 12 inches. This arrangement' affords free space below the objective for the examination of large specimens of metals, such as full rail-sections, without detracting in the least from the value of the instrument when applied to the examination of the usual small specimen, as explained later. Many metal microscopists frequently have to examine bulky specimens, and this is altogether impossible with the ordinary microscopes as well as with the special metallurgical microscopes which have been designed and described from time to time. Recourse must be had to all sorts of makeshifts for the proper support of large specimens, or, more often, the microscopist gives up the attempt altogether, or else resigns himself to the cutting of the bulky samples into small pieces to -be laboriously polished and separately examined. A SURVEY of the Mesabi Range iron-ore industry demonstrates that a satisfactory degree of technical progress has been achieved in the last fifteen years. This advance has not been made over a uniform front, but, by salients and bays, according to the different initial positions, economic and technical, of the component producing companies. The producers endowed with rich ore have in general, because of natural advantages, progressed more slowly than their neighbors with leaner properties. The advance has been made step by step all along the line -blasting, loading, hauling and concentrating-and without the benefit of radical innovation. There have been, for instance, no such parallel discoveries in iron ore as leaching and flotation in copper. The much lower unit price of iron operates, of course, to bar the application of these and other practices developed for the higher-priced metals. There exists, however, a radically new concentration process whose technology is well worked out and which may become economically operative in the not too distant future; this, as so often happens in engineering advance, because of recent developments in an entirely unrelated field. First, however, let me devote a paragraph or two to the more important economies effected in mining.

POSSIBLE postwar trends of the more important world minerals will be determined in part by their present world position and by the acts and forces that have operated during the war period, so it is desirable first to review briefly what has been happening in the foreign field of metals and minerals. When we first entered this war we of the mineral profession were all acutely conscious of our lack of strategic minerals and other materials, which had to be imported in great quantities-minerals such as manganese, chrome, tin, mercury, nickel, and antimony. But we realized also that we had to acquire vast quantities of those minerals of which we had thought we were bountifully supplied. Our assumed domestic abundances turned out to be woefully deficient, and demands also arose for new minerals never before produced in large quantities. Some threescore minerals entered the strategic list of our imports. Ores from new sources had to be sought, developed, and transported. Tonnages in the millions of such bulk materials as zinc, lead, copper, chrome, and manganese flowed to feed our war efforts. Sparsely distributed minerals such as tin, mercury, antimony, tungsten, cobalt, mica, and corundum had to be lured from their rock lairs in greatly increased quantities to feed the hungry maw of war industry, and the rare minerals such as tantalite, columbite, beryl, and quartz crystals had to be developed and procured in quantities never before dreamed of. New uses such as radio and radar created demands for many minerals formerly thought of only as adornments of museum collections and not as pressing industrial minerals. Such minerals were never before mined in quantity.
