A NORTH CAROLINA miner dreamed that he found high-grade mica by excavating a certain corner of his mine. The next day he sank a hole on the exact spot and found mica of excellent quality. The dream came true. May not this be as good a method as any yet known for forecasting the valuable mineral content of pegmatites? The Federal Geological Survey has found in its recent detailed studies in New England that good sheet mica occurs most abundantly in zoned pegmatites, particularly in zones lying along the wall or contact of the pegmatite mass. Although this conclusion may be a valuable guide, pegmatite mining operations must still be classed as most uncertain and hazardous enterprises. Finding of the second largest diamond ever discovered in the United States-a stone of good gem quality weighing more than 34 carats-during the course of a horseshoe pitching contest at Peterstown, W. Va., is another example of unorthodox mining methods. These should not be considered, however, as characteristic mining methods developed in 1944.

A recent paper by Thomas1 has presented new data on the solubility of hydrogen in solid silver at 1 atm pressure in the temperature range 600° to 963°C. However, no data is reported in the literature on hydrogen solubility in liquid silver. The Sieverts technique which has been described previously2,3 was used in the present work. Charges of approximately 160 g were melted in Morgan "purox" recrystallized alumina crucibles and purified helium was used for the determination of the "hot volume" during each experiment. A chemical analysis of the silver indicates that the impurity content (Cu + Al) is less than 0.02 wt pct. Hydrogen solubility in the temperature range 963° to 1200°C was investigated. The results of three experiments are shown in Table I. Fig. 1 shows an Arrhenius plot of the present work together with the solid-state data of Thomas, Steacie, and johnson,4 Eichenauer et al.,5 and Siegelin et al.6 The following expression has been derived from the Arrhenius plot of the present data: log (solubility of hydrogen, cm3 per 100 g) = 2.154-3512.0/ToK The heat of solution derived from Fig. 1 is 31,150 cal per g mole H2 compared with the value of 33,020 cal per g mole H2 obtained by Thomas and 12,000 cal per g mole H2 obtained from the data of Steacie. It was observed that hydrogen evolution took place when the silver melts were solidified under 1 atm of hydrogen, which would not be expected from an extrapolation of the results of Steacie. Schenck and Lange7 have observed that, for several transition metals at their melting points, the ratio of the hydrogen solubility in the liquid to that in the solid lies in the range 2.1 to 3.1. With the advent of higher pressures in the operation of natural-gas transmission lines, the removal of water vapor from the gas has become increasingly important in order to prevent condensation or formation of gas hydrate from slowing down or stopping the flow of gas. Intelligent design of these dehydration or gas-drying plants has been hampered through the Iack of experimental data on the water vapor content of natural gas at elevated pressures. In view of this need, this present investigation was sponsored by the Southern Natural Gas Co. in the Chemical Engineering laboratories at the University of Oklahoma Research Institute. Experimental results were obtained on the water-vapor content of natural gas up to 2000 lb. per sq. in. at atmospheric temperatures. The water content at 2000 lb. is approximately two thirds as much as it is at 1000 Ib. Deviations from the ideal gas laws vary directly with pressure and indirectly with temperature. Introduction The removal of water vapor from natural gas is an important operation in connection with the production and transportation of this commodity because: I. Liquid water accelerates internal corrosion of a pipe line. 2. Accumulation of water at low points in a pipe line reduces markedly its capacity. 3. Gas hydrates, icy snowlike growths, form readily under high pressure in the presence of the lower hydrocarbons and water, often plugging up the pipe line. In order to design dehydration plants for stripping the gas of its water content, it is essential that the engineer. have a knowledge of the saturated or equilibrium water-vapor content of the gas to be processed. With the gradual increase of operating pressures around gas-producing wells and pipe lines, it was observed that the quantity of water recovered from dehydration plants or condensed in colder lines was considerably greater than had been expected from calculated contents, based on vapor-pressure data taken from steam tables. This observation prompted a number of investigators, for instance, Laulhere,3 Dea-ton,l and Hammerschmidt2 to carry out experimental work at pressures up to 600 lb. per sq. in. in order to determine quantitatively the water content of various gases. Sage, Lacey, et al.4,5 have recognized more recently the need for such data at higher pressures, but their work was done at temperatures of 100ºF, and higher. Since hydrate formation usually, if not entirely, occurs at temperatures below 100ºF., the present investigation was confined to the . lower temperature range at pressures from 600 to 2000 lb. per sq. in. gauge.

ALTHOUGH few changes can be reported in educational methods at the mineral technology schools during 1940, other events have taken place of direct interest to, and that will have a profound effect upon, mineral industry education on the United States. In the erection of new buildings, some notable changes have been made on the campus, The U.S. Bureau of Mines Experiment Station at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, was dedicated on May 20. The construction and equipment of this building cost between $300,000 and $400,000. It will be the general headquarters for the metallurgical division of the Bureau and will have a pronounced effect upon the mineral industries research program at the University.

A GREAT CURTAILMENT of field activities among the geophysicists occurred last year, especially in prospecting for the common metals. In gold, however, an "outstanding achievement . . . was made by the engineers of Consolidated Goldfields. Here the suboutcrop of the Main Reef Series was traced from Middelvlei through properties of the westward area, a distance of from 30 to 40 miles. Here Drs. Reineche and Krahman prospected with the aid of a sensitive magnetometer and established the singularities of the various beds which heretofore had not been sufficiently appreciated. Several underlying shale beds were used to determine this suboutcrop under the dolomite. This area promises to be the equivalent of one-half the size of the present gold fields and to rank in value with the Far East Rand." The present temperature compensated magnetometers permit accurate field observations to less than 5 gammas. Since magnetic anomalies may have their origin due to a change of elevation as well as to the outcropping of a bed of another magnetically different material, intimate geological knowledge is of great assistance in the interpretation of these measurements. To what extent magnetic measurements reflect the basement when the material is homogeneous, consisting primarily of red granite, was determined by members of the Bureau of Mines and described by Dr. J. H. Swartz. Because of the diverse causes of magnetic anomalies, some of which were discussed and correlated by Stratton and Joyce upon known conditions, magnetometer measurements are often difficult to interpret.

It is rather gratifying that in the field of the manufacture of refractories, in which, as a whole, foreign practice has surpassed us, the United States stands pre-eminent in the making of silica brick. In some instances European manufacturers have refused point-blank to credit the possibility of making to such specifications as are Common with us, until the actual completed shapes were shipped for inspection. But both the manufacturer and consumer in foreign lands are now frankly learning from us, and benefiting by our advanced practice in this field, as is evidenced by the orders placed here and the efforts put forth abroad to come up to the standard of American-made material. In no metallurgical operation has the employment of silica brick spread with such leaps and bounds as in the building of plants for the carbonization of coal, particularly in the byproduct coke oven. Today, in practically all types of oven, the structure above the floor level (except the facings) is of silica, while in the recuperative and in some regenerative types, its use is extended to that portion of the oven below the floor as well. By reason of the fact that there are a number of classes of refractories of higher silica content than the usual so-called fire-clay brick, there is sometimes a misunderstanding as to the class of material referred to as "silica" brick. We here refer only to a brick having a silica content of 94 per cent. or more and made usually from quartzite rock with a small percentage of lime as a binder. The term "silica" brick is sometimes rather loosely applied to brick from highly siliceous clays, or to a quartzite refractory of mingled fire-clay and quartz rock; but such products are not considered in this discussion. : Materials The rock from which practically all high-grade silica brick are made is a true quartzite or metamorphosed sandstone, variously known as

The recirculating furnace is primarily a heating apparatus of the convection type in which the heat-absorbing surfaces are heated by a mixture of fresh products of combustion and a portion of the combustion gases that have already given off a part of their heat in their previous passage over the heat-absorbing surfaces. In its basic conception, the recirculating furnace can be considered as a closed thermal system in which the heat-absorbing surfaces are constantly swept by a fixed quantity of products of combustion at a given initial temperature with the gases being constantly returned to the furnace and reheated before they again enter the heating zone. Gases equal in amount to those produced by the fuel burned to reheat the circulating gases are constantly ejected from the system to the stack. The recirculating furnace is the most suitable apparatus for heating by convection where low furnace temperatures must be maintained and where only a small portion of the available heat is taken out of the gases, particularly where the maximum allowable furnace temperature is low and where the final temperature of the gases is only a few hundred degrees below their initial temperature. In such cases, recirculation not only provides a method of reducing the rather high combustion temperatures of the fuel when burned without a large amount of excess air, but, by returning to the furnace the heat content of the gases at their final temperature, recovers a large portion of heat that otherwise would have been lost through the stack. The convection-type oil still is particularly suitable for the application of flue-gas recirculation. In an oil still, the heating of the oil is accomplished by applying to the tube surfaces a given quantity of heat of a certain predetermined quality, usually with the initial temperature of the gases not over 1500" F. as measured by thermocouples placed above the tube bank. To obtain the full benefit of the heating surface of the coil, the final temperature of the gases, after passing over the coil, is kept 200" to 300" higher than the temperature of the incoming oil. IN THE literature on the elimination of metalloids in basic open-hearth practice, there are a great many heats recorded in which excellent data on changes in slag and metal composition during refining are given, but in almost all of these heats either temperature data or weights and analysis of charge are unrecorded and observations on the physical charac- teristics of the slag are almost always lacking. With these points in mind, a test heat was made in which as complete as data possible on all the factors that affect the elimination of metalloids were obtained.

Seepage runs (stream flow measurements in a short time at many points in a basin,) and stream flow records are used to locate losing areas in stream basins in the Missouri Ozarks. The terrane consists of dolomitic limestone and sandstone of Ordovician and Cambrian age. Side-looking radar imagery emphasizes variations in topography and reveals two types of drainage basin topography, rough and smooth (deeply dissected and slightly dissected basins). In the deeply dissected basins (rough ones), main streams and tributaries generally gain. In the slightly dissected basins (smooth ones), the streams lose a part or all of their flow. Logan Creek, a tributary of Black River in the southeastern Ozarks, loses much of its storm runoff and all of its dry weather flow. East and West Forks of the Black River, north of Logan Creek, gain water through most of their main stems. On radar imagery Logan Creek basin has a light uniform tone and smooth texture in contrast to the darker tone and rough texture of the East and West Forks. The contrast is due to the difference in degree of dissection. Therefore, radar imagery may be useful in suggesting gaining or losing streams (or reaches of streams).

WARTIME factors have strengthened the production engineering consciousness of the petroleum industry. The basic principles of sound oil-production technology have been accepted as the standard by the industry and the governmental co-ordinating agencies. Every effort is being made to furnish larger quantities of petroleum with a minimum expenditure of materials and under strict conservation practices. The sphere of influence of production engineering extends from fundamental reservoir control of withdrawal rates and reservoir pressures to bolstering production from stripper wells. Serious transportation difficulties in moving oil to the East Coast have stimulated secondary recovery operations in the Appalachian and East Central oil-producing states. Diminishing discovery of new oil reserves by exploration activities increases the importance of promoting efficient oil-producing methods and practices throughout all productive areas in the United Nations.

DURING the latter part of the year 1931, the Republic mine of the Republic Steel Corporation, at Republic, about 4 miles south of Browns-ville, Pa., was mining coal along four rib or fracture lines. One of these lines, the west butt rib line, was retreating towards a concrete-lined air shaft, 320 ft. deep, which had been sunk in 1911 for ventilation purposes. With the normal rate of mining at that time, it was expected that this rib line would pass the shaft in three or four months and the shaft would then be abandoned and allowed to cave. Realizing the opportunity presented for the study of an unusual case of ground movement, the question of conducting the study was presented by the junior author to the chairman of the Institute's committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence, Mr. George S. Rice, who presented the matter to Mr. G. H. Morse, General Manager of the Northern Mines, Republic Steel Corpora-tion, and he agreed to cooperate with the Bureau of Mines in making the study, the results of which are presented in this paper. Acknowledg-ments are due to Mr. Morse for his full cooperation in this work and to Mr. G. S. Rice and Mr. J. W. Paul, both of the U. S. COMBUSTION of coal and transfer of heat from flames and gases to boiler surfaces continue to be of great interest to engineers here and abroad. Numerous investigations have been in progress to improve furnace and boiler performance and economy. The importance of better understanding of the processes and opportunities for improvement is apparent when it is remembered that heat from at least 500 million tons of coal a year the world over is being transferred to boiler water at efficiencies ranging mostly between 50 and 90 pct. Even slight gains in efficiency, economy, and labor saving become very significant when multiplied by the enormous quantity of fuel consumed. Also the competitive position of the large coal, oil, and gas industries in satisfying the fuel consumers is greatly affected by the achievements made through technical progress with each fuel. This paper is part of a continuing activity of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., to extend the knowledge of coal utilization for steam generation and to seek promising directions for future research and development in cooperation with others. Particularly in the latter regard, numerous interviews were held during the last three years to seek the experience and advice of boiler and combustion-equipment manufacturers, electric-utility executives, and fuel engineers. A wealth of published information was also reviewed, which together with the interviews pointed to the advisability of further work on ash and sulphur control. For the present purpose a number of factors important to efficient heat liberation and recovery have been grouped as follows: 1—combustion, temperatures, and rates of heat liberation; 2—radiation, convection, and furnace and boiler configuration; 3—sponge ash, slag, and hard-bonded deposits; 4— low-temperature deposits and corrosion (cooling flue gas below dew point and air-pollution control); 5—the limitations of coal cleaning and boiler size and cost as related to fuel characteristics; 6—future possibilities and conclusions. The development of combustion apparatus for power boilers is progressing at a lively pace. There has been no letup in improvements in design of pulverized-coal-fired boilers, and there is a strong trend at present toward improving dry-bottom units. Spreader stokers with overfire jets and dust collectors as standard equipment are gaining favor. Less than 10 years in commercial use, cyclone burners are going into numerous installations here' and abroad.' Underfeed and traveling-grate stokers have long since been developed for heavy-duty operation, yet new developments in overfire jets and humidification of air blast have improved their performance. A water-cooled vibrating-grate stoker of German origin is being introduced into the United States and Canada." The primary objectives of an ideal coal combustion device are: capacity to burn the variety and sizes of coals likely to be economically available during the life of the unit; capacity to burn the coals automatically for a wide load range and rapid load fluctuations and to burn the coals completely to CO2, H2O, and SO2, which means without smoke and cinders, or carbon in the refuse; capacity to control and discharge all the ash in final granular form without ash adhesion to walls or tubes, and without flue dust; minimum furnace volume; minimum labor and maintenance; low initial and operating cost. Regardless of the method of burning, the gaseous products of coal combustion are N2, CO2, O2, H20, and SO?. By way of illustration, the coal analyses in Table I is assumed from an installation described by E. McCarthy.' When coal is burned with 20 pct excess air (theoretical air, 9.23 lb per lb of coal), the quantities of combustion gas shown in Table II are produced. In addition, the gases carry particles of fly ash, unconsumed cinders, soot particles, and small but significant amounts of vaporized oxides and sulphates of sodium, potassium, lithium, phosghorous, iron, and other metals. In recent years, germanium, one of the rare metals found in coal, has been shown to oxidize and vaporize at combustion temperatures and to be concentrated by reconden-sation at lower temperatures." Pulverized coal and cyclone flames" have peak temperatures of 3000' to 3500°F. Temperatures in fuel beds of large underfeed stokers reach maxima of 3000°F, sufficient to fuse almost any ash and to volatilize some of it. These peak temperatures are above the optimum necessary for rapid combustion, but they hasten heat transfer for ignition as well as boiler heat absorption. Furnace and gas temperatures increase with combustion air preheat. Low excess air has the same effect. Fine coal pulverization and highly turbulent combustion shorten the distance for fuel burnout, increase flame temperature, and speed up heat transfer. Rates of combustion of pulverized coal exceeding 200,000 Btu per cu ft per hr have been demonstrated in atmospheric gas-turbine combusters,

Because common salt, sodium chloride, is necessary to all animal and much plant life, it is probably the most widely used of all mineral commodities, except for water. Nevertheless, of the total salt consumed, only 7% is used for food, including animal food. Two-thirds of the total is used as chemical raw material, principally for making such basic chemicals as chlorine, caustic soda, and soda ash. Other uses are for road thawing (16%) and water softening. Some 162.5 million tons of salt were used, worldwide, in 1972 (Table 15.4F.1). Production is from bedded salt deposits, salt domes, and evaporation of brines, including solar evaporation of seawater. Production is worldwide from at least 20 countries, of which the United States, China, USSR, the United Kingdom, and West Germany are the leaders. Consumption increases about 7 % annually. Reserves are plentiful: Other important sodium salts are soda ash (sodium carbonate) and salt cake (sodium sulfate). Soda ash comes mainly from the Solvay process (70% ) , which uses salt, limestone, and ammonia as raw materials. A large and growing portion of United States production is from mining large bedded deposits of trona, a natural hydrated sodium carbonate and bicarbonate found in Wyoming, and from brine evaporation in California. Soda ash is used for glassmaking, phenol, soap, detergents, and bleaches. Half of the United States salt cake used is a byproduct from rayon manufacturing. The other half comes from brines and playa lakes in California, Texas, and Wyoming. Salt cake is used mainly for papermaking. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Appreciation is expressed to William B. IN A previous paper1 the authors dealt with the physical properties of cold-rolled and heat-treated Britannia metal of the approximate composition Sn, 91 per cent., Sb, 7 per cent. and Cu, 2 per cent. It was found that cold rolling to more than 50 per cent. reduction produced a continuous softening of the metal when measured by the Brinell machine, whereas the Shore instrument indicated increased hardness; that the strength of the material followed the Brinell hardness and that the metal therefore became weaker the more it was cold-rolled; and further, it was found that hardness and strength could be largely restored to the cold-rolled metal by "baking" for about one hour at any temperature, between 200° and 450° F., the melting point. The higher the baking temperature, the more effective was the heat treatment as far as increased hardness was concerned. It seemed to be of little importance whether the metal was soaked or not at the baking temperature for a great length of time and the rate of cooling seemed to be immaterial. The present paper deals with the same alloy and more particularly with the resistance towards various forms of stress - tensile, bend and deep drawing. The metallography of Britannia metal has in part also been covered and an explanation attempted for the abnormal behavior of this alloy.

A pronounced thermal effect has been observed on heating or cooling a1wninum-rich Al-U and Al-Pu alloys. From microscopic and X-ray diffractionstudies, the effectl has been attributed to trnsfor)nations in the inlemetallic phases UAl, and PuAl , involuing rearrangement or cluslering of vacancies The transformation obsrved in Al-20 wi oct U alloys occurred near the a Al-UAl4 eutectic tem-perature of 646°C making it difjicult to detect from heating curves. When cooling, howeoer, thermal mad X-ray analyses indicnted that the high-temperati~re phase labeled p UAL, precipitated initially during euitectic solidification. As solidification continued and after an induction period o-f 5 lo 20 tnin the nu-cleatiorz and growth of the low- twmperature phase, a UAl4 produced an euolution of energy which raised the observed alloy temperature by 1° to 2°C. in Al-Pu alloys the transformation occurred at 645°C, 5 deg below the eutectic solidification temperccture. The eslimated latent heat of transformation was 25 +5 cnl per g PuAl,. The high-tetnpevcl-ture forms of UAl, and PuAl, were easily 9-etccined by chill casting Al-U and Al-Pu alloys and on reheating the alloys the trcltzsforrnation to the a phase was sluggish even above 600°C. Separated single cryslals o-f UAl4, joy example, showed no evidence Of transformalion after heating for 16 hr at 620°C. The transformation rates increased yapidly enough with increasing temperature, however, that a a spontaneous liberation of energy lens observed on occasion when bealing cast Al-20 wt pet U to neal- the RECENT phase studies on A1-Pu alloys have indicated that earlier reported equilibrium diagrams should be modified to take account of several poly- morphic transformations in the intermetallic compound PuAl,.' During the course of the latter work an unexpected heat evolution was observed while cooling a solid alloy consisting of a mixture of a aluminum and PuA1,. The evolution occurred at 645°C, y below the a A1-Pu A1, eutectic solidification temperature. Subsequent thermal-analysis experiments with A1-U alloys showed that heat was evolved there also at a temperature nearly coincident with the a A1-UA1, eutectic solidification temperature of 646°. A search of the literature revealed that similar thermal effects had been observed before for both A1-U and A1-Pu but had never been fully explained.2,3 The purpose of the present paper is to describe thermal-analysis and X-ray diffraction experiments which have led to the conclusion that the thermal effects are due to transformations which involve the rearrangement of vacancies in the intermetallic compounds UA1, and PuA1,. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The A1-U alloys were prepared by heating super-pure aluminum (99.99 pct +) obtained from the Aluminum Co. of Canada in a graphite crucible surrounded by an induction coil. At 1000°C high-purity uranium metal produced by the Eldorado Mining and Refining Co., Ltd. was dropped into the liquid aluminum and was dissolved completely within 15 min. The impurities in the uranium were A1—4 ppm, Ca-4, C-70, Cr-3, Cu-6, Fe-30, Mg-2, Mn-10, Ni-25, Si-25, and Zn-2. The A1-Pu alloys were prepared by reacting plutonium dioxide with liquid aluminum under cryolite (3 NaF . AlF,) for 10 min at 1100°C in graphite crucibles exposed to the air. The plutonium was 99.8 pct pure, containing trace impurities of Ca, Cu, Fe, Pb, Si, and Zn. The liquid alloys were usually poured into water-cooled molds to provide castings of uniform composition from which samples could be cut for heat treatment and thermal-analysis experiments.

WIDESPREAD interest in the better utilization of coal is indicated by the attendance of over seventeen hundred men interested in the pro- cessing and utilization of coal and its by-products, at Pittsburgh, Nov. 15 to 18. The conference was truly international in scope and of a scientific character, and must be considered a real success. There were dele- gates--official and unofficial-from America, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Mexico, and Sweden. Several Federal and 28 State departments had representatives, also many colleges and universities, and many leading industrial and mining corporations throughout the country. A feature of the sessions was that papers were mostly read in full and attentively listened to, although in some cases they were of a technical nature. The proceedings were opened by the president of Carnegie Institute of Technology, Thomas C. Baker, who spoke of the importance of the conference and felt that without foreign cooperation it could not have been held. There was no need to apologize for the movement of Carnegie Institute of Technology in the matter. Coal is commanding attention in every part of the world; so is power; and coal will remain the chief source of power for generations to come. The coal chemist is working with the engineer, and nobody can forecast what developments there will be in fuel technology. This conference may be the turning point of fuel technology in America. The development and application of these new processes may be of great benefit to Pittsburgh.

In addition to the alloys of copper with iron previously found by Hanson and Ford to show an increase in the concentration of the alpha range with increase in temperature the following binary and ternary systems have been found by the author to exhibit: the same feature: (a) Copper-chromium. (b) Copper-cobalt. (c) Copper-silicon. (d) Copper-nickel-silicon and its pseudo-binary section Cu-Ni2Si (formula of compound definitely established). (e) Copper-cobalt-silicon and its pseudo-binary section Cu-Co2Si (formula of compound established with some probability but not as definitely as for Ni2Si). (f) Copper-chromium-silicon; formation of a compound definitely established (compare Figs. 1 and 2). The formula of this compound may be either Cr2Si or Cr3Si. (g) Copper-iron-silicon; presence of a phase containing both iron and silicon established in an indirect way only. No definite microconstituents observed. 2. RANGES OF SOLID SOLUBILITY (percentage at various tempera¬tures). (a) For copper-chromium: 0.8 at 1000° C.; 0.5 at 900° C.; 0.25 at 800° C.; 0.05 to 0.1 at 500° C. (b) For copper-cobalt: 3.4 at 1000'C.; 2.4 at 900'C.; 1.7 at 800'C.; 0.9 at 600°C.; 0.35 at room temperature. (c) For copper-silicon (Fig. 3) : 6.8 ± 0.1. per cent. at 800° C.; 3 per cent. at 400° C. and probably below 2 per cent. at room temperature if sufficiently long annealed. (d) For copper-cobalt silicide: 3.3 at 1000° C.; 2.4 at 900° C.; 1.6 at 800° C.; 0.7 at 600° C.; 0.3 at 300° C. (e) For copper-nickel silicide (Fig. 4): 8.2 at 1000° C.; 5.5 at 900° C.; 3.6 at 800° C.; 1.6 at 600° C.; 0.7 at 300° C.

THE results are presented of an investigation to discover the fundamental atomic conditions existing in Corson's high-copper alloys hardenable by means of silicide solution and reprecipitation. The study attracted the writer because it offered a very convenient example of the general type of hardenable alloys exemplified by duralumin. Sykes' iron-tungsten and iron-molybdenum alloys and the hardenable lead-antimony. SUMMARY OF RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS In brief, the investigation shows that very perfect crystallinity exists in the solid solutions prepared at high temperature to contain as much dissolved silicide as possible. The lattice parameter of copper is altered very little by the amount of cobalt, nickel or chromium, and silicon dissolved. The hardening by drawing at a temperature to initiate precipitation of excess silicon and metal produces a remarkable change in the atomistics of the solid solution. The old perfection of crystallinity in the solid solution is destroyed and the new atomic spacings are of variable magnitude even in one grain, and a condition in a measure resembling that found in martensite is observed. Were no particles whatever precipitated by the drawing action, still ample causes for hardness would be in evidence in the solid solution alone. The lack of plane continuity in the crystal grains would oppose slip in a very effective manner. Complete annealing restores the crystalline perfection in large measure. In these alloys even the most sensitive methods failed to reveal the characteristic pattern of the silicide precipitated by the anneal, but this was largely to be expected as the amount is relatively small.
