FOR the mineral industry, as for many others, the year 1944 brought to fruition the seeds planted in previous war years. Accomplishment in attaining ends in the production of minerals has given more time for the consideration of postwar problems, such as plans for resuming production for civilian uses and measures to prevent possible mass unemployment. The hectic atmosphere in production circles lessened during the latter half of 1943, conditions becoming static during 1944 as peak production rates were reached. Withdrawal of deferment of young men from the mining districts by Selective Service connotes that man power at the battlefronts became more important than the persistence of pressure for metal production. This is in contrast to the return of soldiers in 1943 to augment the labor ranks in the mining districts. The year ended in the midst of changing needs. Over-all metal production in the United States in 1944 will record a lessening, compared with the previous year owing to labor shortages which affected both development work and ore output.

The Petch relation between the flow stress and the gain size is derived from a consideration of gain boundary sources of dislocations without the need of dislocation Pile-ups. Three mechanisms for inierpreting the yield stress: the gain boundary strength, the unpinning of Frank-Read source near a grain boundary, and the generation of dislocations from the grain boundary are compared and the condition of their equivalence is shown. The effect of the average angle of misfit of pain boundaries is found to be sma11 and so is that of the average angle of misfit of subboundaries having impurities. The effect of impurities on the ledge density in the grain boundary is treated thermodynamically and a relatwn is proposed for the variation of Petch slope with impurity activity. The effect of temperature on the Petch slope is interpreted as due to the change of ledge structure in the grain boundary. It is indicated that the effect of annealing temperature may be more important than that of the test temperature and therefore should be studied. The effect of plastic strain on the Petch analysis is deduced from a work-hardening equation in which the generation of dislocations has first-order kinetics and the annihilation of dislocations has second-order kinetics. It is concluded that the Petch slope will decrease with plustic strain if the rate of annihilation of dislocations is sufficiently large. Critical experiments which may shed light on the mechanism for the Petch relation are suggested. THE relation between the yield or flow stress, 0, and the grain size, l, was first proposed by all' and later studied more extensively by Petch and co-workers, who also proposed a similar relation for the fracture stress and deduced from these a grain-size effect of the ductile-brittle transition temperature. The microscopic mechanism used by all' and petch2 involves a pile-up of dislocations of like sign generated from a Frank-Read source. The yielding or flow takes place when the pile-up exerts sufficient stress at the grain boundary so that the plastic deformation can propagate from one grain to another. If the average strength of the grain boundary is ai and the average length of the pileup is lp, the Petch slope, k, is given by" where p is the shear modulus, b the Burgers vector, and v the Poisson ratio. This slope will be independent of the grain size if l/lp is a constant. This is possible, since, if the Frank-Reed source is situated near the grain boundary, lp = 1, and if it is situated in the middle of the grain, Ip = 1/2. cottrell,12 also using the pile-up mechanism, proposed that the stress concentration at the grain boundary will initiate Frank-Read sources near the grain boundary and in this manner a Lüders band can propagate from one grain to another. Assuming that the average distance between the Frank-Read sources and the grain boundary is 1, and the unpinning stress of the Frank-Read sources is op, Cottrell obtained the following Petch slope: This slope will be independent of the grain size if ls is independent of the same, which is not as obvious as the condition, Ip = I for Eq. [2]. In addition to this assumption, the direct relation between the Petch slope k and the unpinning stress, up, was recently questioned by Johnsonon grounds that it is inconsistent with the following observations: the independence of k with temperature and strain rate, and the small k in columbium, which, like iron, has a sharp yield point. As pointed out by ohnson," the most important objection both to the Hall-Petch mechanism, in which the strength of the grain boundary plays the role in yielding, and to the Cottrell mechanism, in which the unpinning of Frank-Read sources plays the role in yielding, is the lack of direct observation of the pile-ups. The dislocation structure in deformed iron has been examined recently in the electron microsope.'-' Dislocations appear to be generated from grain boundaries or other interfaces; they form clusters and tangles within the grain at very early stages of deformation, even in the Lüders band, if the deformation is slow or at normal and elevated temperatures. Although it is still too early to interpret bulk properties from thin-film observations, it does seem worthwhile to look for a mechanism for the Petch relation which does not require dislocation pileup. SUBBOUNDARY SOURCES In order to show that a consideration of grain boundary sources can lead to the same Petch relation as does the consideration of the strength of the grain boundary, we shall first discuss the case of a simple tilt boundary whose elastic properties have been studied in detail.17 The strength of a partially

D. A. Dahlstrom—Mr. Falconer has done an admirable job of proving the adaptability of the cyclone to the beneficiation of a very difficult size range in the preparation of coal. The addition of the cyclone to other coarser size methods makes it economically feasible for the coal operator to rigorously control his marketed products at a high and uniform quality level down to the 48 and 100-mesh size. Furthermore, it should be pointed out that by utilizing the cyclone as a deslimer or classifier the —3 200-mesh fraction, usually containing large percentages of undesirable material, can also be quickly and cheaply removed from the clean coal. Advantages of such a step are several: (1) Reduction of ash content, especially where clays and slimes are serious. (2) lower moisture content of the final coal. (3) easier mechanical and thermal de-watering of the fine coal due to higher cake and bed permeabilities. The author has indicated that adjustable control means should be installed on the cyclone operating on a heavy-media slurry. This also holds true for the cyclone acting as classifier, deslimer or preliminary dewatering agent and is worthy of special emphasis. Such controls, while not necessarily automatic, must be simple, rapidly adjustable, and require a minimum of attention. Three methods available to the operator are (1) throttling valve on the feed line, (2) back pressure valve on the overflow, and (3) adjustable diameter underflow nozzles. The first two, while fulfilling the specifications, suffer the disadvantage of restricting capacity if severe throttling is necessary. The third method has little effect on capacity and easily maintains an underflow of correct moisture content. Several designs are possible, but two find the widest application. The first was developed by Robert Piros of The Truax-Traer Coal Co. and uses a simple casting containing two holders for underflow nozzles which can be rotated about an axis parallel to the cyclone centerline. These holders retain the underflow nozzle flush with the conical section walls. When a change in nozzle diameter is required, the new size is placed in the spare holder and rotated into place. A second design utilizes a soft rubber cylindrical tube which is compressed or released from three sides, causing the inner diameter of the tube to decrease or increase. The relative machinabilities of the precipitation-hardenable Cu-0.9 pct Cr, Cu-0.25 pct Zr, and Cu-0.9 pct Cr-0.25 pct Zr alloys are improved from 18 to 80 pct by 0.75 to 1.25 pct Pb. The Lead also improves the tensile strength, hardness, ad resistance to softening of the Cu-Cr and Cu-Cr-Zr alloys. When the alloy containing 0.7 to 2.2 pct Cr, 0.10 to 0.25 pct Zr, 0.75 to 1.25 pct Pb, and balance copper is solution-annealed at 1000°C (1830°F) and then aged at 525°C (Y75°F), tensile strength of 65,000 psi, 16 pct elongation, 62Rb hardness, and 84 to 87pct IACS electrical conductivity are obtained. The copper base Cu-Cr, Cu-Zr, and Cu-Cr-Zr alloys have high electrical and thermal conductivities, high strength and resistance to softening at elevated temperatures, but their machinability is poor, i.e., close to that of the pure copper. In the manufacture of various components such as welding electrodes or electrical and thermal conductors it is ofter desirable that the alloy have good machinability for high production rates and long tool life. Thus, alloys that combine these properties may be used not only for existing applications, but for new ones where good machinability is a requirement. This investigation was undertaken to improve machinability without impairing other desirable characteristics of the Cu-Cr, Cu-Zr, and Cu-Cr-Zr alloys. These commercial alloys contain about 0.4 to 1.2 pct Cr, 0.10 to 0.25 pct Zr, and balance copper. Lead was selected as an element that should improve the machinability and possibly other characteristics of the alloy. WORK PROCEDURE This investigation began with a study of the effect of lead on the hardness, tensile strength, electrical conductivity, and machinability of the binary alloy containing 0.10 to 1.30 pct Cr and balance copper. This was followed by an investigation of the effect of lead on the Cu-0.1 to 0.4 pct Zr and Cu-Cr-Zr alloys. The alloys were made from initially oxygen-free copper and for comparison some castings were made from phosphorus-deoxidized Lake Copper. Commercially pure chromium, zirconium, and lead were used for alloying. In melting the chromium was added to molten copper at 1400°C (2550°F), the heat held for 15 min at temperature, and the temperature then lowered to 1350°C (2460°F) when the other elements were added. The alloys were held for 15 min at this temperature and cast into a cast-iron mold. One-kilogram, 3-in.-diam castings were made. An argon cover was maintained during melting and casting to prevent oxidation. The chemical compositions of the alloys are shown in Table I. The micro structure and properties of the alloys were studied in the cast and wrought conditions prior to and after various solution-annealing and heat-treating cycles. The relative machinability was determined as a function of the lead content and compared with the free-machining Cu-lpct Pb alloy. To determine the machinability, 13/16-in.-diam cast specimens were cut by a machine hack saw using a constant cutting speed of 50 fpm, a fixed feed force, and a new blade for each alloy specimen. Molybdenum highspeed steel saw blades, 0.032 in. thick with 14 teeth per in., were used in all tests. No cutting fluid was used. Five tests were made on each specimen and the average elapsed time per test was taken as a measure of the relative machinability for that alloy. The variation of cutting time for each alloy was less than 110 pct.

Discussion of the paper of Lewis T. Wright, presented at the New Haven meeting, February, 1909 (Trans., xl., 492 to 495). J. PARKE CHANNING, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*):-Mr. Wright, in his introductory paragraph, says: " It is commonly believed by metallurgists that in copper-smelting, the copper in the slags, which is irreducible by continued smelting, is retained in the form of 'prills' of matte." On a recent visit to Greenwood, B. C., I was discussing with J. E. McAllister, the general manager of the British Columbia Copper Co., and the former metallurgist of the Tennessee Copper Co., this very question; and he held strongly to the idea that the copper in slag was in two forms-one portion contained in occluded matte and the other as an oxide. He believed that this same rule would apply to the silver in the slag. From my experience I am strongly inclined to agree with Mr. McAllister; and it appears quite reasonable that in furnaces treating oxidized copper-ores, and to a less degree in furnaces treating sulphide ores, there is always bound to be present a certain amount of copper oxide and silver oxide, which will behave like any base and get into the slag as such. We all know that in Arizona, in the early days, when it was customary to produce black copper, because the ores were nearly all oxidized or carbonates, and sulphur was scarce, the slags as a rule carried 2.5 per cent. of copper and seldom ran less than 1.5 per cent. of copper. The economic point was determined by the extra coke necessary to produce the reducing action. In connection with the extra saving in copper, Arthur L. Walker, now professor of metallurgy at Columbia University, and formerly general manager of the Old Dominion Copper Mining Co., at Globe, told me that with coke at $60 per ton it never paid him to make slags containing less than 2.5 per cent. of copper. *Received Oct. 8, 1909.

In a previous paper1 the authors dealt with the physical properties of cold-rolled and heat-treated Britannia metal of the approximate composition Sn, 91 per cent., Sb, 7 per cent. and Cu, 2 per cent. It was found that cold rolling to more than 50 per cent. reduction produced a continuous softening of the metal when measured by the Brinell machine, whereas the Shore instrument indicated increased hardness; that the strength of the material followed the Brinell hardness and that the metal therefore became weaker the more it was cold-rolled; and further, it was found that hardness and strength could be largely restored to the cold-rolled metal by "baking" for about one hour at any temperature between 200" and 450" F., the melting point. The higher the baking temperature, the more effective was the heat treatment as far as increased hardness was concerned. It seemed to be of little importance whether the metal was soaked or not at the baking temperature for a great length of time and the rate of cooling seemed to be immaterial. The present paper deals with the same alloy and more particularly with the resistance towards various forms of stress — tensile, bend and deep drawing. The metallography of Britannia metal has in part also been covered and an explanation attempted for the abnormal behavior of this alloy. Tensile and Bend Tests Two ingots 73/4 in. wide, 11 in. long and ¾ in. thick were cast from the same pot. One ingot was cold-rolled in one direction to a strip 0.241 in. thick, which furnished the tensile test specimens; the other ingot was rolled in the same way to 0.253 in. and furnished the specimens for the bend tests. The ingots were cast as described in the previous paper and cold-rolled in six passes.

IN this critical period of our history, the coal industry of the nation, faced with many obstacles, performed its work safely during the first ten months of 1943. Thousands of the younger mine workers were inducted into the armed forces of our country and in many instances their jobs have been filled by others without much if any experience and training. This situation alone would seem to be sufficient to interfere with the safe and orderly operation of the industry but the Government's demand for a substantial increase in coal tonnage over that produced in normal times introduced a hazard which always accompanies speed, regardless of the skill of the worker.

The results of a study of the open-hearth process from the physicochemical view-point are given. This study includes experimentation in small laboratory furnaces and in standard 100-ton furnaces. The behavior of manganese, carbon, and phosphorus are quantitatively explained. The action of "residual" manganese is discussed with reference to its relation to iron oxide dissolved in the metal. The solubility of CO in steel and its relation to dissolved FeO and carbon is given. The equation for phosphorus elimination has been tested out on a 200-ton furnace and the results are given in the text. THE effect of temperature and slag composition on the elimination of metalloids in the basic open-hearth process has been qualitatively understood since the early days of steel making. The quantitative effect has, however, only recently been brought to attention. The effect of slag composition has received more attention than that of temperature, primarily because the range of finishing temperatures in the basic open-hearth process is small compared to the large variations found in the composition of the slag at different periods during the process, and to the variations occurring with the use of raw materials of different degrees of impurity. The effect of slag composition on the elimination of metalloids has been studied by Styri1 from the thermochemical standpoint. This method is open to serious errors, in that thermochemical data at 2900° F. are very inaccurate and in many cases completely lacking. Feild2 has calculated equilibrium constants from the rate at which the metalloids are eliminated. The effect of slag viscosity on rate of elimination will affect the constants calculated by this method. Whitely,3 Colcough4 and others have used slag compositions as the basis for calculation of constants by which the extent of elimination may be calculated.

The Institute has established this lectureship to honor the memory of a great American metallurgist, one whose fame has continued long after his passing. As one scientist recently stated it, "All metallurgical texts gradually become outdated and outmoded, except those of the great Henry Marion Howe." It seems fitting, then, that, once every year, we shouId review, in his honor, some aspects of the science in which he was such a distinguished leader, and also discuss any new data that may help to clarify our concepts. It is my privilege, for which indeed I express the deepest appreciation to this Institute, to offer for consideration a few thoughts on the toughness and fracture of hardened steels. Before proceeding to the data, I wish to express my great indebtedness to many associates whose stimulating discussions, generous contributions of data and cooperation in experiments are gratefully acknowledged. (But I wish to absolve them of any blame that may arise from the way in which their discussions and data have been used!) First, Dr. Edgar C. It is only within the past 10 years that serious attempt appears to have been made to improve rotary drilling fluids by the application of the principles of colloid chemistry, although the use of chemicals to control the rheological properties of clay slips has long been known in the ceramic industry. The main difficulty apparently lay in the lack of a complete analysis of all of the functions of a drilling fluid in the drilling of the well, together with the lack of adequate consideration of how colloid science could be applied to secure these ends, and particularly how apparent antithetical properties of the fluid could be compromised. Thus one analvsisl of the many requirements of a drilling fluid proved conclusively that the viscosity should be low, in order that cuttings and entrained gas might be eliminated effi-ciently in the settling ditch, while the loss in carrying capacity accompanying low viscosity could be regained by increasing either the density of the mud or the upward velocity of the mud stream in the annular space of the well, and the danger of sticking of the drill stem due to rapid settling in case of enforced suspension of drilling operations could be eliminated by enhancing the thixotropic properties of the fluid. The desired properties of the drilling fluid having thus been established, it was a natural step to treat the fluid with vis-cosity-reducing chemicals, such as salts of weak organic acidsl for example, sodium tannate or gallate—and to adjust the pH to the alkaline side to such a degree of thixo-tropy as would give low viscosity and low yield point under the conditions of flow prevailing in the settling ditch, but rapid gelation and high yield point when quiescent in the annular space during shutdowns. In fact, flow in the settling ditch should be just short of turbulent while flow in the well, together with the flow of mud past the cuttings, is practically always turbulent. The use of chemicals other than those mentioned, such as Calgon (sodium hexametaphosphate) and certain other phosphates together with sodium tannate, has now become standard practice and it is the consensus that this method of treatment has proved to be an important step in the development of the art of drilling oil wells. It is safe to assume that the application of colloid chemical principles can also help in solving other outstanding problems of drilling fluids, such as the development of cheaper and more efficient viscosity reducers ; the development of chemicals that do not lose their effectiveness in a short time during drilling operations; the finding of chemicals to preserve the plastering properties of muds when concentrated brines are encountered or in drilling through salt beds; improvement in the plastering properties of poor muds by further defloc-culation, and, conversely, the prevention of excessive deflocculation of certain marine shales sometimes encountered; the preparation of muds suitable for the successful drilling of heaving shale formations; the finding 0f chemicals to treat the mud to prevent or to diminish lost circulation; the development 0f muds that will not impair 6

The desired properties of the drilling fluid having thus been established, it was a natural step to treat the fluid with vis-cosity-reducing chemicals, such as salts of weak organic acidsl for example, sodium tannate or gallate—and to adjust the pH to the alkaline side to such a degree of thixo-tropy as would give low viscosity and low yield point under the conditions of flow prevailing in the settling ditch, but rapid gelation and high yield point when quiescent in the annular space during shutdowns. In fact, flow in the settling ditch should be just short of turbulent while flow in the well, together with the flow of mud past the cuttings, is practically always turbulent. The use of chemicals other than those mentioned, such as Calgon (sodium hexametaphosphate) and certain other phosphates together with sodium tannate, has now become standard practice and it is the consensus that this method of treatment has proved to be an important step in the development of the art of drilling oil wells. It is safe to assume that the application of colloid chemical principles can also help in solving other outstanding problems of drilling fluids, such as the development of cheaper and more efficient viscosity reducers ; the development of chemicals that do not lose their effectiveness in a short time during drilling operations; the finding of chemicals to preserve the plastering properties of muds when concentrated brines are encountered or in drilling through salt beds; improvement in the plastering properties of poor muds by further defloc-culation, and, conversely, the prevention of excessive deflocculation of certain marine shales sometimes encountered; the preparation of muds suitable for the successful drilling of heaving shale formations; the finding 0f chemicals to treat the mud to prevent or to diminish lost circulation; the development 0f muds that will not impair 6

Detailed structural studies in southeast Arizona have successively revealed (1) the local attitudes of individual fractures (with lateral and/or vertical displacements), (2) the patterns exhibited by groups of fractures, and (3) the trends and directions shown by fracture groups or zones on a regional scale. The results of the studies have been twofold: First, domes were locally determined from these fracture arrangements, even where other criteria failed; and, second, fundamental breaks brought out the breadth of the Texas lineament in southeast Arizona as well as major northwest- and northeast-trending fracture zones. Coincidence of one or several domes with the major intersections of fundamental breaks can be centers of important mineralization, as in the instances of Bisbee, Ajo and Morenci. THE OVER-ALL STRUCTURE OF ARIZONA A northwest-southeast trending anticlinorium has been suggested as the structural setting of Arizona. Starting in Triassic and culminating in late Cretaceous times, this deformation resulted from stresses of considerable magnitude with varying ratios of com pres sional and uplifting forces. However, the series of parallel flexures could just as well have been caused by isostatic movements involving dilation under tension with only incidental compression, as later emphasized by dike filling and block faulting (Fig. 1). The anticlinorial deformation, which is also suggested by the fact that the Pre-cambrian rocks to the southwest are all concealed by sediments, could be somewhat reminiscent of the conditions that affected the classical swarm of parallel dikes of wager.' ANALYSlS OF DATA As a first step in this analysis, all structural information obtained on such features as fractures and their relative displacements, faults, dikes, anticlines, synclines, and Precambrian and Laramide-Tertiary intrusives were plotted on maps along with structural trends inferred from aerial photographic mosaics. Next, the faults in southwest Arizona were classified according to time of occurrence and relative importance. The fault assemblages were then examined as to geometric or spatial arrangement and correlated with the occurrences of domes and existing Finally, the conjunction of fracture intersections and domes was analyzed and compared with locations of known ore deposits. Differentiation of Faults According to Time and Relative Importance: The faults encountered were grouped as follows: (1) Basin and Range faults, latest in time; (2) secondary faults; (3) primary faults; and (4) lineaments, earliest in time by inference. Conventional laboratory core analysis tests on samples of two limestone reservoir rocks indicate that about 20 per cent of PV is in dead-end pores. These tests (electric logging formation factor, mercury injection capillary pressure and miscible displacement) were carried out on 1/4-in. diameter test plugs. Test results show a clear dilference between these samples and sandstone or homogeneous limestone reservoir rock. Although the amount of dead-end pore space can be only roughly estimated, the presence of such pore space seems clearly indicated. Pressure transient studies also show presence of deadend PV. Although they do not give quantitative results, pressure transient data yield a reasonable estimate of the size of the neck connecting dead-end pores to the main flow channels. INTRODUCTION Equations conventionally used to describe reservoir flow behavior contain the implicit assumption that all connected pore spaces contributed to both porosity and permeability. Several authors3-7 have pointed out the changes in pressure transient behavior and in electric log interpretation that may result if this assumption is incorrect and, instead, dead-end or cul-de-sac pores are present. There is a need for laboratory tests that can detect presence of dead-end pores in core samples. With such information on hand the petroleum engineer can make more rational use of the mathematical tools now available for analysis of reservoir flow behavior. This paper describes laboratory studies designed to detect and, if possible, give a quantitative measure of dead-end PV in laboratory-size core plugs. Three reservoir rocks were used, two of which were limestones suspected of having deadend pore spaces and a well-known sandstone, used as a comparison standard, in which there is believed to be little or no dead-end pore space. All the studies were designed to measure the natural dead-end PV; i.e., the pore space which is dead-ended because of rock structure. During multiphase flow in a rock without dead-end pores, some parts of one of the phases can become surrounded by the other, thereby giving (for certain flow behavior) an effective dead-end pV8,9. Such behavior will not be described here.

Much attention and publicity has been given, during recent years, to grinding, classification, flotation, and thickening. The various technical papers, and symposiums held to discuss these important phases of milling, have contributed to a better under- standing of the fundamental principles and operating variables involved. Another important part of milling- to the flotation operator-is a treatment step to which frequently too little attention is given-" conditioning," or the treatment the ground mineral pulp receives before it enters the flotation machines. Conditioning" is a hackneyed and frequently misused term, commonly employed to describe the pretreatment of surfaces of minerals in ore pulps or mill pr6ducts prior to froth flotation. In general, such pretreatment is for the purpose of changing the flotation characteristics of these mineral surfaces to enable them to respond in some desired predetermined manner when subjected to flotation. Taggartl states that the function of conditioning is "either to insure selective collector coating of one mineral species while another species is not; or to take such steps as will compensate for departure there from."

NATURE endowed the Niagara Frontier with great resources but it was the molding of these resources by the early pioneers that assured its future development. This great industrial district of New York stretches along about fifty miles of shore line on the eastern end of Lake Erie and the Niagara River, embracing the two counties of Erie and Niagara, with the city of Buffalo about in the center. This location at the junction of the eastern end of the Great Lakes and the western boundary of the State, a great focal point of land and water, transportation, guaranteed the development of the Frontier. Although the first white settlers came to this section in 1784, it was not until after the turn of the nineteenth century that real development started. Perhaps the most significant influence in the early days was the completion of the Erie Canal between Buffalo and Albany in 1825. This then monumental achievement gave Buffalo an advantage in the race for the best trade route to the Western

Interfacial tension divided by the difference in density between the liquid and the vapor phases was determined experimentally by the pendant drop method on several isotherms in the two phase region below the critical point for the methane-normal decane system. The density difference data of Sage and Lacey was used in the calculation of interfacial tension. Both interfacial tension and and interfacial tension divided by density difference were found to vanish at the critical point. Interfacial tensions of less than one dyne/centimeter were observed as far as 1,000 pounds per square inch below the critical pressure. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The interfacial tension divided by the density difference for the methane-normal decane system was determined at the 100°, 130°, 160' and 190°F isotherms, from pressures of about 1,000 psi to the critical pressure, which is more than 5,000 psi for these isotherms. Particular emphasis was placed upon the investigation at pressures slightly below the critical pressure where the interfacial tension is less than 0.5 dyne/cm. Volumetric properties in the two-phase region, including the critical pressures and temperatures, were taken from the work of Sage and Lacey.1 The experimental pendant-drop technique used for the determination of interfacial tensions at high pressures incorporated the ideas of Michaels and Hauser,2 Hough, et a1,3 Walker4 and Heuer.5 In addition, the technique for determination of extremely small interfacial tension by Jennings6 was utilized in the region near the critical points. A detailed description of the apparatus is given in a dissertation by one of the authors.7 Cleaning operations on the stainless-steel sample system included successive washings with chromic acid, tap water and, finally, distilled water. Subsequent cleanings were performed with re-distilled normal pentane, which had an extremely low residue upon evaporation. Specific composition requirements necessitated a fairly precise sample introduction — although, fora two-phase, two-component system, the composition of each phase is completely determined if pressure and temperature are controlled. The normal decane was delivered into the evacuated sample system as a liquid from a burette. The methane was then introduced into the system from a calibrated isothermal container, so that pressure differentials could be used to determine the amount introduced. High pressures were obtained by compressing the sample with a mercury injection pump until the critical pressure was reached for the particular isotherm being studied. Experimental data were then obtained for specific pressures by first decreasing the pressure slightly so that two phases would appear, and then photographing a drop at that pressure. Activity in coal preparation in 1967 was on the up-swing and all indications are that demands will be greater in the future. Feed tonnages to plants are increasing and a significant factor is that the top size being fed to plants is decreasing. This has been brought about by market demands, better cokability in some cases and emphasis on sulfur reduction in others. New plants are being built and some are in operation in the coal fields of southern Illinois. These plants are producing metallurgical coal in circuits that contain heavy medium cyclones and froth flotation on the - ½ mm x 0.
