The occurrence qf the V phase structure /Zr,Co,Ge, type) in ternary syste7ns (titanium, zivconium, niobium, lanta1urn) -(nickel, cobalt, iron)-(silicon, germanium) was incestigated. Nine V silicides and four V gertrlanides were found and their lattice constants are reporled. The lattice constants of twenty-one preri-ously identified E phases (TiNiSi type) are given. The average atomic volumes of these phases are discussed in relation to similar binary phases. ThE occurrence of a phase Ti4Ni4Si7 was first reported by Westbrook. DiCerbo, and peat' who gave it the name "V phase". They also reported the existence of an E phase TiNiSi. Subsequently a systematic study was undertaken in this laboratory to explore the occurrence of E' and V phases3 in related ternary systems. In the meantime the crystal structure of the E phase TiNiSi 4 and of the V phase Zr4CO4Ge 75,6 was determined. In the present paper the details of the V phase investigation and the lattice constants of the E and V phases are presented. V PHASES Alloy specimens of approximately 10 to 15 g were prepared by arc melting under argon (99.996 pct Ar) atmosphere. The starting materials were all of purity higher than 99.9 pct, with the exception of cobalt. which contained 0.14 pct Fe as the only major impurity. The weight losses were in all cases less than 2 pct, in most cases less than 1 pct. The samples were encapsulated in fused silica tubes with sufficient argon to yield about 1 atm pressure at the annealing temperature. After the homogenization anneal. Table I. the specimens were water-quenched. A representative portion of each specimen was then examined metallographically (etchant: 20 pct HNO,. 10 pct HF. 25 pct glycerine, 45 pct H20). Only minor amounts of second- and third-phase particles were observed in the specimens listed in Table I, with the exception of alloys Zr4Fe4Si7 and Ta,Fe,Si,. which contained an estimated 10 pct by volume of foreign phases. X-ray powder photographs were taken with a Seeman-Bohlin type focusing camera and Fe-KO radiation. Of the thirty possible combinations of elements in the ternary systems (titanium, zirconium. vanadium. niobium. tantalum)-(iron. cobalt, nickel)-(silicon. germanium) thirteen V phases could be identified. In the remaining seventeen ternary systems and also in the systems Cr-Ni-Si and (M0.W)-(Ni.Co)-Si no V phase was found at the composition 4:4:7 after annealing at temperatures between 900" and 1200'C. For the determination of the lattice constants of the V phases Debye-Scherrer photographs were taken using the asymmetric film arrangement and CrKcr radiation (ka1, = 2.28962A). Using the positional parameters, as determined6 for Zr,Co,Ge,. Table 11. intensity calculations were carried out for each of the V phases with the aid of a computer program.: Thus unequivocal indexing of the diffraction patterns was greatly facilitated. The lattice constants. Table I. were then computed by a least-squares fit of the high-angle lines with f (0) = cos2 Q as extrapolation function. The function of a preposition is to show the relation of one thing to another; it is necessary therefore for the writer to select the preposition that indicates the particular relation, otherwise he will fail to express himself clearly. Is it against common sense' to suggest that a Government is justified, morally as well as constitutionally, in preventing the decay of an industry by insisting upon the amalgamation of the prosperous with the needy? All these seven prepositions are used correctly. With the first dredge introduced in Russia, of Werf Conrad, Haarlem, make, this method of alluvial dining became important. Here the prepositions "with", "in", and "of" are used wrongly. He means: "This method of a1lu;ial mining sprang into importance shortly after the first dredge, made at the Werf Conrad, Haarlem, was introduced into ;Russia." The statement itself ii not true, but for that I am not responsible. Once, while I was serving with him, we were frozen in out of sight of land in the Gulf of Pichili in the North of China. Admiral Fisher wrote thus. He has used nine prepositions in making this brief statement. The sequence of three prepositions "in out of" is particularly awkward.

THE Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. began to produce bismuth at the Oroya smelter in 1929, at which time the only important consumption of that metal was in the manufacture, of pharmaceutical compounds, and the normal supply of metal exceeded the demand. With a new and major producer entering the field, additional uses for bismuth had to be developed. A survey indicated that the most promising opportunity lay in fusible alloys containing bismuth. A large number of bismuth alloys were known and a few of them were being used in the manufacture of automatic sprinkler heads and safety plugs. The literature cover in,- the- alloys was found to be sketchy and contradictory. Research, development, and educational work carrried on by the Corporation during the past fifteen years has resulted in greatly enlarged uses for the metal. A strain anneal process has been developed for the production of iron tensile test specimens, the gauge length consisting substantially of a single crystal. Since the method has been quite successful and the results of general interest, the process will be described in detail. The essential feature of the method is the continuous, slow increase of furnace temperature during the grain growth annealing treatment. Briefly, the procedure is as follows: I. Heat machined bars to 950°C in vacuum, hold I hr, furnace cool. 2. Strain to 3.5-3.8 pct elongation (axial loading). 3. Anneal, continuously raising furnace temperature from 450 to goo°C at a rate of so0 per day. 4. Hold at 900°C for 100 hr, furnace cool. Tensile test bars with a 1/4- X I-in. gauge section have been machined from 35 in. Armco iron plate and from 3/8 in. rounds of Puron, a high purity laboratory iron. The axes of the test bars were parallel to the rolling direction. During the machining operation the bars were polished in the lathe with No. 600 emery paper, and this polished surface proved satisfactory for subsequent macrographic examination. A micrographic examination of the materials showed that both were high in FeO inclusions, those of the Puron being smaller but much more numerous. An initial vacuum anneal of I hr at 950°C followed by furnace cooling resulted in a ferritic grain size of ASTM No. 3 for Armco and No. I for Puron. Special heat treatments which reversed these initial grain sizes produced no marked improvement in single crystal production after subsequent treatments. The strain for subsequent grain growth was determined by measuring the decrease in diameter of the tensile bar during elongation. The change in diameter could be measured with a micrometer to +0.0001 in., corresponding to an accuracy of 0.08 pct for the elongation. The accuracy of the diameter measurement is also dependent on grain size because of surface roughening during elongation, and for this reason, a No. 3 grain size is preferable. Optimum grain growth was obtained for strains between 3.5 and 3.8 pct elongation. Once this critical range had been cstablished, all tests were held within it, and thus only meager data were obtained on grain growth following strains outside this range. In general, grain size decreased with increasing strain to about 5.5 pct elongation. Grain growth was occasionally ohserved with less than 3.5 pct elongation although this may have been the result of error in measurement. The program control device for the grain growth anneal consisted of a I rpm motor and worm gear drive, operating the dial shaft of a pyrometer controller through a pulley. Dial speeds of 33 and 50°C per day were tried, but the results at the slower speed were not sufficiently better to warrant the increased furnace time. The furnace tube was evacuated at intervals during the run and kept sealed the remainder of the time. When the controller reached 900°C, it was stopped and the temperature held for 100 hr. This eliminated most of the numerous minute crystallites of about 0.5 mm dimension usually visible on the etched surface of the single crystal. The problems of slope stability in open cast mines are examined. A criterion, the instantaneous stripping ratio, is suggested for use in the design of pit slopes and as an index of control at all stages of the exploitation of the orebody. This criterion may also be related to safety and to the maximizing of profits. Two approaches to safe design of slopes, one from the point of view of soil mechanics and the other from the point of view of rock mechanics, are described and critically compared. The effect on slope stability of the regional tectonic stress field is discussed. Explanation is given of the application of the Terzaghi effective stress concept to problems in both soil and rock environments, including possible effects when borehole deformation techniques are used to measure stresses in rock in situ. A company embarking on open cast mining is faced with two basic questions: 1) will the venture be profitable and 2) can it be carried out with safety? The two questions are obviously interrelated because both depend upon the slope angles adopted for the pit. The cost of open cast mining depends largely upon the stripping ratio, defined as the volume of overburden that must be removed to the volume of ore recovered. The steeper the slope angles, the more favorable the stripping ratio, but the stability of the slopes, and therefore the safety of men and materials in the pit, require that the angles be made relatively flat. Consequently, the design depends upon a compromise: the slopes must be steep enough to result in economical mining and flat enough to ensure safety. Today there is a world trend towards deeper mining by open cast methods. This is mainly due to the higher cost of underground mining and the lower cost of open excavation resulting from the introduction of large modern earth and rock-moving machinery. Deeper open cast mining has led to a very great increase in the volumes of wasted overburden, and much thought is being given to the considerable economic benefits which would result if pit slopes could be made steeper by even one or two degrees. The result has been an increasing interest in research into slope stability problems in the expectation that the application of scientific principles will provide solutions leading both to economies and to more predictable operation of the mines. In at least four places, the U.S., Australia, Western Germany and Southern Africa, comprehensive investigations are at present in progress, and it is the object of this paper to review some of the more important aspects of these programs. RELATION BETWEEN ECONOMY OF OPERATION AND SLOPE ANGLES The main object of any industrial enterprise in a free economy is to make a profit. In mining, where profits must be made from a wasting capital asset, a further definition of the profit motive is imposed, namely that the economic aim should be to maximize the total possible profit. But since profits deferred for a number of years are not as valuable as profits that are immediately available, it is usual to discount deferred profits at some rate of interest which reflects their current or present value in the hands of the investor. Thus, in mining the logical aim can be defined more closely still: to maximize the present value of the total future profits. In commercial terms the present value represents the market value of the operation as a going concern. Many factors enter into the forecast of current and future profits. They include the volume of production, the price of the salable product and the cost of production. Current profits can be estimated with reasonable accuracy by the operating engineers; but it is the task of economists and management to assess future trends in the mineral markets and in the economy as a whole, and together with the engineers, they can then estimate the future cost and profitability of the mining operations. In open cast mining, the rate of ore production once decided on remains a virtually constant factor unless a major change in the capital structure of the mine is made. Y..(written discussion).-There is no reason to doubt that the relationship between the rate of, flow and. the impelling force of all fluids can be expressed by a general typical equation that takes cognizance of all relevant factors such as density, viscosity (or its reciprocal, mobility) and nature of channel-walls. Most fluids that are commonly conveyed by flow in confined channels are so highly mobile that they may be considered non-viscous, hence for these fluids the factor of viscosity does not need to appear in the equation. Water is the outstanding example of this class of fluids and its dynamic behavior has been so thoroughly investigated that proven formulas pertaining thereto, be they rational or empirical, would naturally serve as prototypes for the other non-viscous fluids. As non-viscous fluids can be classed all gases and vapors, most unsaturated aqueous solutions, gasoline, alcohol, etc. Viscous fluids comprise those that have a sluggish flow such as most oils, tar, molasses, etc., the' high viscosity of which is due to shearing resistance between molecules, a force that must betaken into account in figuring the flow of fluids of this class.

The tests herein described are part of an extended series of expel<ments, performed by the authors together with J. F. McClelland and L. W. Bahney, on the reclamation of metallics from foundry and manufacturing-plant scrap. The most obstinate problem encountered was the proper cleaning of the metal. Introduction In the manufacture of brass and brass products the weight of the finished product leaving the plant is much less than the total weight of. copper and zinc entering. A small part of this discrepancy is due to the unavoidable oxidation of the metals in melting, but by far the largest part of the loss is in the form of metallic particles of copper,. zinc, and brass. These losses occur principally at three points in the process: (a) in the casting-shop ashes; (b) in the slags from furnaces melting scrap brass; (c) in material spilled on the floor throughout the manufacturing process. The amount of these products in some plants is nearly 100 tons per 24 hours. Casting-shop ashes contain the metal spilled from the crucibles during melting and pouring, and the metal included in the slags formed in the melting process. The ashes also contain pieces of broken crucibles with adhering metal; 20 to 30 per cent. of unburned coal is also present. The metal in casting-shop ashes contains clean pieces of zinc or copper ingots weighing 1 to 2 lb., jagged pieces of metal of all shapes ranging in size from several inches down to the finest dust, and shot and botryoidal shapes ranging in size from 2 or 3 in. down to 0.01 mm. or less in diameter. Slags from furnaces melting scrap brass contain metal in the form of small shot. Floor sweepings occur in all shapes: spirals, thin shavings, pins and pin-like pieces, wire, rods, and buffing-wheel dust are the commonest.

HERCULANEUM, MO., about thirty miles south of St. Louis on the Mississippi River, is the site of the lead smelter of the St. Joseph Lead Co. The lead concentrates come by rail from the Flat River district and from three properties in Madison County, Missouri; from the Balmat division in St. Lawrence County, New York; a small tonnage from the Tri-State district; and occasionally from the Aguilar property in Argentina. The average grade is 67 to 68 percent lead and 1 to 3 oz of silver. The bulk of the material is flotation concentrate, with some gravity or table concentrate. No secondary metals, outside drosses, or any materials high in bismuth, arsenic, or antimony are treated. All concentrate is received in box-caps and is unloaded directly from a trestle into the concentrate bins at the roaster plant. Flux, coke, and any miscellaneous lead-bearing material is either unloaded directly into bins or unloaded with a locomotive crane. All moving and switching of cars is done with two thirty-ton steam locomotives. Shipping facilities for the plant are provided by the Missouri-Illinois Railroad. Water for the plant and for fire protection is obtained from a dam built in a near-by creek. Drinking water both for plant and town is obtained from

Since 1911, when J. L. Dunn first used compressed air for repressuring depleted oil sands in southeast Ohio, the rejuvenation of many depleted oil fields has been directly due to repressuring by means of air or gas. Developments in repressuring in recent years have resulted in its successful use in the early life of some deep, high-pressure oil fields, conserving the natural gas dissolved in and associated with the oil by returning it to the producing oil sand after it has been compressed above the existing rock pressure of the reservoir. One of the most successful operations of this type is that of the Humble Oil & Refining Co., on the DeWalt salt dome at Sugarland, Texas. I quote from a personal communication with reference to this field: "Structurally, the field is dome-shaped, having a closure of approximately 350 ft. Production comes from a sandy shale interbedded with a clean sand and lying over a cap rock which is about 3400 ft. deep on top of the structure." A feature of the operation of this field is the production of the required amount of oil with the minimum of gas production. Wells on top of the dome have high gas-oil ratios, while those down structure have lower ratios, depending upon the distance of the well from the peak. To date, it has been possible to produce the oil needed from the wells circling the dome above the water zone and below the gas zone, and in this manner the average gas-oil ratio has been kept low. The gas from all separators is turned into a gas system which serves the entire field. From this system, all drilling rigs and utilities requiring gas for a fuel draw their requirements, and the remainder of the gas (about two-thirds of the production) is delivered to a compressor plant which boosts the pressure until it can be returned to the sand at the top of the dome where the rock pressure is 1400 lb, per square inch. "The Sugarland wells produce through 2-in. tubing with a 3/8-in. choke in one wing of the well-head manifold. The pressure builds up as high as 1300 lb, per square inch on the casing while on the tubing it varies from 0 to 900 lb. per square inch, depending upon the amount of gas produced with the oil."

The effects of increasing hydrogen content, introducing a notch, and changing the strain rate on properties of titanium and one of its alloys were investigated over a range of testing temperatures from —196° to 200°C. Both high purity and commercial purity A-55 titanium were used as representative a materials, while a commercial Ti-8 pct Mn alloy was used for an a-P alloy. It was found possible to analyze the data, using the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature concept. Increasing hydrogen, the presence of a notch, and increasing the testing speed raised the transition temperature for the a materials. The presence of hydrogen and notches raised the transition temperature of the a-B alloy also. However, increasing the testing speed generally decreased the transition temperature of the a-p alloy. IN previous papers, the authors have shown that hydrogen is most detrimental to the notch-bend impact toughness of a-titanium&apos; and to the tensile ductility of a-B titanium alloys.&apos; These general effects have been confirmed by Kessler and co-workers," and by Kotfila and Erbin." Kessler showed that the slower strain rate in notch-rupture tests was a more sensitive measure of hydrogen embrittle-ment of a-B alloys than the tensile test. In the present paper the authors cover, with tensile and notch-bend tests, the effect of testing speed, notches, and testing temperature on hydrogen em-brittlement. High purity and commercial purity titanium, examples of u materials, and a commercial a-,f3 Ti-8 pct Mn alloy were investigated. The purpose of the investigation was to correlate the factors producing embrittlement. Materials The high purity titanium for this investigation was obtained by arc-melting crystal bar from Foote Mineral Co. into 1 Ib ingots. As-cast hardnesses for these ingots ranged from 60 to 90 Brinell. The arc-melted ingots were forged to % in. diam rods at 1470°F. These rods were swaged to & in. diam at room temperature prior to machining of the specimens for hydrogenation and testing. The commercial A-55 titanium and the Ti-8 pct Mn alloy were obtained from Rem-Cru Titanium Inc., as % in. diam rod. The A-55 titanium was hot swaged to 1/4 in. diam at 1300°F prior to machining of the specimens for hydrogenation and testing. The a-p C-11OM alloy was hydrogenated prior to hot swaging to 1/4 in. roc1 at 1300°F. Hydrogenation prior to fabrication permitted testing of the a-P alloy in the equilibrated and stabilized condition. The equilibration and stabilization treatment used was an air anneal for 1 hr at 1300°F, followed by furnace cooling to 1100°F and then air cooling. Hydrogenation was done in a Sieverts apparatus described previously.&apos; The hydrogenation treatment consisted of heating for 1/4 to 1/2 hr at 820 °C in purified hydrogen, slow cooling to 680"C, holding 1 hr for homogenization, and rapid cooling to room temperature. Intended hydrogen levels for the a-tita-nium materials were 0.05, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 atomic pct—about 15 to 430 ppm. For the Ti-8 pct Mn alloy, the intended hydrogen levels were 0.05, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5, and 5.0 atomic pct—about 15 to 1100 ppm. The material for the 0.5 atomic pct level of hydrogen was vacuum annealed prior to hydrogenation to increase the accuracy of the addition. Vacuum annealing to remove hydrogen consisted of heating for 6 hr at 820°C, and resulted in a hydrogen content of about 10 to 15 ppm. When hydrogen contents were above 0.5 atomic pct—100 ppm—the hydrogen was added without prior vacuum annealing.

The bainite transformation in a 3.5 pct Ni-1.25 pct Cr steel was studied under various conditions of cooling and stress. Several characteristics may be specified: 1) transformation in the bainite region (925° to 575°F) is very little affected by the manner of cooling from the austenitizing temperature at 1600°F to 575°F)tothe upper limit of bainite transformation at 925°F; 2) starting time for the bainite transformation is the same order of magnitude for either isothermal transformation or continuous cooling, but the rate of transformation is somewhat greater for isothermal transformation; 3) tensile stress accelerates both isothermal and continuous cooling transformation, and 32,000 psi stress changes the form of the isothermal transformation diagram to correspond in appearance to the continuous cooling diagram; 4) transformation for nonlinear, continuous cooling may not be determined directly from the linear, continuous cooling transformation diagram, but may be predicted by assuming first that the fractional amount of austenite transformed in a given small temperature interval depends on the approximate linear cooling rate during that temperature interval and then by summing stepwise over the whole temperature range. IN a previous publication&apos; an X-ray spectrometer was described with which the X-ray diffraction from a specimen could be observed continuously under controlled temperature and tensile stress. This instrument has now been applied to a study of the austenite-bainite transformation in a Ni-Cr steel for both isothermal and continuous cooling conditions, with and without stress. Certain characteristics of the transformation lead to a method of predicting the amount of transformation to be expected at a given temperature for any type of cooling curve. Material and Specimen Preparation The steel chosen for the investigation was a Ni-Cr steel having the composition in the following percentages: 0.30 C, 0.27 Mn, 0.019 P and S, 3.50 Ni, and 1.25 Cr. In order to fabricate specimens suitable for the X-ray spectrometer, a 1/4 in. plate was ground down to 0.060 in. and then cold rolled to about 0.035 in. Next it was heat treated by quenching in oil from 1650°F and tempering at 1200°F for 1 hr. Then it was etched in dilute nitric acid to reduce its thickness to 0.014 in. and cut into blanks in the shape of flat tensile specimens 3 1/4 Vi in. long, 7/16 in. wide, with a notch % in. long and 7/32 in. wide; see Fig. 1. X-Ray Technique Since the X-ray spectrometer has been described in detail elsewhere,&apos; only a brief outline of the principles will be repeated here. A focusing, pow- der-diffraction arrangement&apos; was used, as shown schematically in Fig. 1, and the specimen was mounted vertically in a vacuum furnace (not shown in the figure). The X-rays, moving in a horizontal plane, enter and leave the furnace through beryllium windows. As shown in the figure, X-rays diverging from the line source A are diffracted by the specimen B and converge at the detector slit C. The detector D and the slit C may be set at the proper angle in the horizontal plane to receive X-rays diffracted by either the face-centered phase (austenite) or the body-centered form (ferrite, bainite, martensite). The specimen is heated by electrical conduction between connectors E, and E,, and a Pt—Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple spot-welded to the center of the notched region on the side away from the X-ray beam indicates the temperature continuously on a Brown recorder. Temperature control is exercised manually with a variable transformer on the input to E,-E,. Any desired time-temperature relationship is easily obtained by first drawing the desired curve on the temperature recorder chart and then adjusting the variable transformer during the run so that the thermocouple

THE purpose of this investigation was to prepare high-purity iron-carbon alloys, to determine as precisely as possible the A3(GOS), the Acm(SE), and the A1(PSK) transformation temperatures in the meta-stable iron-iron carbide system (up to 1.4 per cent C), and to study the influence of carefully controlled and constant rates of heating and cooling (1/8 to 2° C. per minute) upon the transformation temperature and upon the resulting microstructure. Apart from the general metallurgical importance attending the completion of such a task, it will be noted that highly precise transformation temperatures are of interest and importance in the thermodynamic study of this system1. Several determinations of the iron-iron carbide diagram have been made. These suffer generally from the low purity of the alloys used, and from the application of methods of investigation of low sensitivity. Attempts to compare and weight the many data available in an effort to construct as accurate a diagram as possible have, in the main, been unsuccessful. In general, the wide differences in the results of different workers, the lack of complete analytical data, the omission of important details relating to the heat-treatment of the alloys, and the meager description of the methods of investigation applied, render such a process of averaging nearly meaningless. It may be seen from the summaries by Epstein2 and Körber and Oelsen1 that variations as great as 30° C. exist in the reported data on the A3 temperatures in iron-carbon alloys. For-tunately, the A3 temperature in pure iron is now known to be 910° C. ± 1° C.3 The best recent work on iron-carbon alloys is that of Esser4 on hypoeutectoid steels and that of Sato&apos; on both hypoeutectoid and hyper-eutectoid steels.

INCREASED mining activity during the past year has brought to light changes in mining practice and advances in technique, born and incubated in the period of depression from which the mining industry is now emerging. Although the tendency toward large output from individual mines has continued, a salutary trend is evident toward greater efficiency at small mines, in which the gold mines of Canada have led the way. Improvement in excavating machinery and washing plants for small placers has continued, and knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of this kind of equipment has increased. Greater portability through sectionalization has been the keynote. For the past fifty years or more, the structural features of the Cordil-leran mountain system of western United States have presented some most interesting problems. Any geologist or engineer living in this region, or even making occasional examinations of the mines, will lose much of interest and importance if he is not familiar with the literature. Some of the greatest works on geology have been the result of studies carried on in sections of this region. Among the more important of the earlier works are those of Dutton,l King,2 Gilbert3 and Powell;4 of the more recent Lindgren,5 Ransome,6 Spurr,7 Butler8 and others have contributed much. Many of the papers are largely of scientific interest but even these lay the foundation for the commercial application of the broader features of the geology. I have read many of these works with the keenest interest and pleasure; in fact, some have been read until some of the more important findings seem to be my own. In this paper, however, it is my aim to accept credit for little more than the labor of assembling some of the ideas of others. In recent papers, O&apos;Neill,&apos; Vivian, and Zener and Hollomon3 have reviewed some of the information concerning the relations between stress and strain during plastic deformation. Since further information has been obtained since these reviews were published, this paper attempts to further coordinate and amplify the knowledge concerning the plastic deformation of metals in simple tension. Ordinarily the results of tensile tests of metals are presented as graphs in which the load divided by the original area is plotted as a function of the percentage of elongation measured over some specified gauge length. The interpretation of graphs of this sort is limited, since the stress required to deform the metal at any stage of the deformation is actually the load divided by the instantaneous rather than the original area. Furthermore, each increment of the deformation is performed on metal that has been previously deformed, and, as pointed out by Ludwik,4 the strain could be more effectively defined: where e is the strain and AO and A are, respectively, the original and instantaneous areas. The results of the tensile tests can be more effectively presented and interpreted if the stress* (load divided by actual area) is .lotted as a function of the strain as defined above. A schematic curve of this type is presented as Fig. I. In a previous paper,6 the concept of Ludwik7 concerning the flow and fracture of metals was successfully employed to explain some of the puzzling results of notched-bar impact tests of steel. It appears that the use of this concept ii; very fruitful and should be kept in mind in any study of the deformation charactcristics of metals. Ludwik considered that a flow stress-strain curve of a metal was essentially a locus of points that described the stress required for plastic flow of an infinite numbcr of specimens, each with a different strain history determined by the preceding part of the flow curve Each of these specimens can also be considered to have a fracture strength. Uniortunately (or fortunately depending upon the point of view), all the specimens, except the one deformed to the fracture strain, flow and do not fracture. Both the room-temperature and 600°F (315°C) primary solid-solution phase boundaries for the silver comer of the Ag-Cd-In temary system have been determined using X-ray diffraction and metallo-graphic techniques. Solid solubility of indium in silver at room temperature and 600°F (315°C) is shown to be between 20.3 and 21.7 wt pct, and corrects the previously extrapolated value of 18 wt pct appearing in the literature. The solid solubility of cadmium in silver at room temperature, not previously established, is shown to be between 34.9 and 41.3 wt pct. The solid solubility of cadmium in silver at 600°F (315°C) is confirmed as 43.2 wt pct. The shape of the primary phase boundary line for the subject temary system appears straight at room temperature and curves con-vexly towards the solvent (silver) comer at 600°F (315°C). THIS investigation was undertaken to initiate development of the Ag-Cd-In ternary diagram by establishing the primary solid-solution phase boundary in the silver corner of the diagram. At the present time, a diagram for this ternary system is not available, while this system appears to offer potential for a variety of uses. One alloy in the system has already proven to be useful as a control rod material in nuclear reactors.1"3 To encourage additional exploration of the potential of the system an understanding of its ternary diagram would be beneficial. It is towards this end that the present study is directed. LITERATURE SURVEY In undertaking this study, a comprehensive literature survey was first conducted to find information that would be useful for guidance. Useful knowledge did result from investigating the respective solubilities of indium and cadmium in silver as indicated in the binary constitutional diagrams of the systems Ag-In and Ag-Cd and also reviewing possible shapes of ternary primary phase boundaries. Weibke and Eggers~ used metallographic techniques to establish the system In-Ag as illustrated in Fig. Is This diagram shows that silver in the solid state is capable of dissolving approximately 18 wt pct In. This solid solubility of indium in silver holds true from room temperature up to 1276°F (691°C), then decreases continuously up to 1&apos;761°F (960.5"C), the melting point of the silver. The solid-solubility limit of indium in silver established by Weibke and Eggers has been confirmed by Hume-Rothery and Reyno1ds. G Durrant&apos; used a method which consisted of microscopic examination of quenched specimens to establish the Cd-Ag system as displayed in Fig. 2.&apos; The primary phase boundary of Fig. 2 proved to be in good agreement (ie., within 1 wt pct) with other studies*&apos;1&apos; of the Ag-Cd system made using X-rays and metallog-

The developments in the Russian oil industry during 1935 marked a very definite turning point from the time when the industry was being educated to the modern methods of oil-field finding and development, refining, transportation and marketing, to the time when the industry has thoroughly assimilated the modern technique and is now firmly standing on its own feet, as is shown by the remarkable qualitative, if not quantitative, progress in 1935. The oil industry promises that 1936 will be a record year in every respect with both quantity and quality approaching the desired high levels and standards. More particularly the Soviet Government is beginning to be successful in the development of new fields and such new production in geographically strategical points of the country will be in the coming years a factor of great importance in the industrial life of the country. The most notable achievements of the last year have been: the very successful development of the Ishimbaevo oil field in the Lower Oural-Permian Basin; the discovery and development of several promising oil fields in the Puta district of Azerbaijan, while large flush production of Baku area was extended 50 miles due southwest into the Saliani-Aliat district, where a 3000-bbl. well was completed early in 1936 at Pirsagat. Also, an apparently important discovery was made at Zikh, on the Apsheron Peninsula proper. These discoveries, as well as several important strikes in the deeper producing sands in the older fields of the Apsheron Peninsula, have greatly augmented the proven reserves of Russia and made them available either at the points where transportation facilities were already present or at points not too far distant from major industrial centers of the country. Of course, not all objectives were achieved during the past year, and several major difficulties remain to be solved in the coming years, the more important of which are: (1) supply of equipment and of parts; (2) the unavailability of competent technical men in sufficient numbers, which more particularly affects the distant fields; and (3) the problem of distribution of oil products throughout the country, especially the question of handling the needs of small consuming areas, which, while individually unimportant, in the aggregate require huge distribution.
