Oil-field activities in Oklahoma made 1936 the best year since 1930. Approximately 2800 wells were completed, an increase of about 20 per cent over 1935. Purchasers' reports filed with the Corporation Commission showed a total of 200,240,252 bbl. of oil purchased from leases in 1936. The assembly of a complete table of the oil fields of the state was not achieved, as many of the early records of operators and pipe-line companies are not complete, and data for the older fields will perhaps never be fully tabulated. Table 1 includes all of the new fields and most of the important fields of the State of Oklahoma. The outstanding developments of the year were: the discovery of rich Wilcox-sand production in the Moore pool; the spectacular drilling campaign in the Capitol or Mansion extension in the Oklahoma City pool; the surprising extension of the Olympic pool and the Hunton lime zone in the Fitts pool; and the failure to find more Ordovician production in southern Oklahoma. Wildcat discoveries, which were on a par with 1935, resulted in the discovery of such promising pools as Billings-Wilcox, North Bethel, North Earlsboro and North Lucien. The Fitts-Upper Simpson, Edmond, Jesse, Keokuk Falls and South Burbank pools underwent considerable development. Fitts Pool.—The Fitts area in Pontotoc County was greatly extended during the year and was the leader in drilling activity in the state. The producing limits were pushed to the east and north and the development of the Hunton lime horizon was outstanding. In the Upper Simpson zone 162 wells were completed; 137 in the Hunton lime zone and 26 in the Wilcox zone. The Oil Creek zone, a sand body below the Wilcox member, was discovered by the Magnolia-Statler No. 3 well located in the 1/4. 1/4 of sec. 28-2N.-7E. Moore Pool.—The Moore pool, in Cleveland County, which was opened in 1935 by the Sinclair Prairie-Franklin Community No. 1 well, surprised the oil industry when the Sinclair Prairie-Marvel No. 1 well, on Apr. 1, 1936, discovered a rich body of Wilcox sand below the distillate

In 1942 Grossmannl proposed that the hardenability of a steel may be calculated from its chemical composition by considering the base hardenability associated with its carbon content and grain size and multiplying this base by factors for each element present. Since Grossmann's original publication, several investigaton2-6 have reexamined the multiplying factors for the individual elements and in general have found that the multiplying principle is valid. However, some of the individual factor curves developed have been in poor agreement. Inasmuch as the carbon-factor curve obtained by Grossmann was dependent Lipon the factors for all the other alloying elements present in the steel, it logically followed that his results were in need of correction in the light of the new data available for manganese, silicon, and the other alloying elements. Furthermore, in order to avoid the possibility that errors in the manganese, silicon, or other curves might influence the carbon-factor curve, investigation of iron-carbon alloys containing little or no manganese and silicon was necessary. That the effect of carbon on hardenability was greater than indicated by Grossmann is shown by a comparison of the diameters of completely hardened rounds of iron-carbon alloys with the ideal critical diameter calculated from Grossmann's factors. These alloys have a greater hardenability in a finite quench than predicted by Grossmann's factors for an infinite quench (Table I). Among the other important variables that were in need of further investigation were the effect of deoxidation practice on the grain-size correction curves and the effect of stable carbide-forming elements on the depth of hardening. Most Of the work by Kramer, Hafner, and Toleman4 was done on silicon-killed steels. From the theories of flow and fracture it is shown that the difference in reciprocals of the transition temperatures (OK) is a quantitative measure of temper ernbrittlement. Experimental data are given which support this conclusion. STUDIES of temper embrittlement have been made with various viewpoints; some involved a study of the kinetics of the reaction,',2'" others were concerned with changes in the mechanical properties," . and still others investigated the structural differences between the embrittled and unembrittled states by means of the microscope," -ray ,' measurements of electrode potential," and electrical resistivity." In all these studies, the difference in impact properties was the criterion for distinguishing between the embrittled and unembrittled states. By common agreement the difference in transition temperatures is now taken as a measure of the degree of embrittlement, and this measure is used as the quantitative measure upon which studies of the phenomenon are based. Vidal and Jolivet"' suggested that the degree of embrittlement was the same whether measured by impact or by a slow bend test. Their conclusion was based on tests at constant temperature. Jaffe and Buffum" using the impact and slow bend test showed that, for a given degree of embrittlement, the difference in transition temperatures varied with the method of testing. Hultgren and Chang" showed that the difference in transition temperature produced by the V-notched Charpy impact test was not the same as the value produced by the keyhole-notched impact test. This is a very fundamental point because there can be no true measure of temper embrittlement unless it is invariant with respect to the test method. Theory The purpose of this analysis is to show how the transition temperature depends on the stress distribution and the state of the material. The criterion for fracture may be stated as follws: where iF is some function of the principle stresses and F is a critical condition depending on the state of the metal. Similarly yielding occurs when Where is another function of the prin-ciple stresses and Y is a critical value depending on the state of the material. There is some controversy as to the exact form of the function f,.(u,, u,, us) but most experimental data give the following criterion:= where 8, and 6, = 21 or 0. Combinations of 6, and 8, give the various criteria such as the normal stress, the hydrostatic tension, and the maximum shear stress laws. WHAT are known as insulating firebrick are lightweight firebrick with low thermal conductivity designed primarily for use in direct contact with furnace gases. These are a recent development in the refractories industry, and are really an outgrowth of the type of insulating brick suitable for use behind refractory walls developed by the insulation manufacturers. To differentiate between these two types of brick, the manufacturers have recently agreed upon the use of the term "Insulating Firebrick" to apply to the type of brick suited for use in direct contact with furnace gases, and the term "Insulating Brick" for the type suitable for use behind refractory walls. Insulation was applied to steam pipes as far back as 1900. This was a low-temperature insulation, the most common type being magnesia blocks. The next development was applying insulation to the outside of furnace walls, a service which necessitated an insulating material of higher temperature resistance. Natural diatomaceous earth, both in the powdered and brick form, was used; this was efficient and is still used extensively for backing up refractory walls where the inner surface temperature of the insulation does not exceed 1600° F.

Some years ago, A. M. Gaudin and one of the authors published a paper showing removal of tar acids from solution by sulfides preferentially as compared to gangues (specifically by galena as compared to quartz).' The underlying phenomenon was classed as adsorption, and the paper went on to develop the general thesis that so far as water-soluble frothing and collecting agents in flotation are concerned, the phenomenon of adsorption is one of controlling importance. Adsorption was defined in that paper as "a process of rearrangement of a system, which results in establishing a difference in concentration, as between the interfacial layers and the bulk of the phases, of a substance or substances initially uniformly dispersed in one or several of the phases." The paper went on to develop the relation between adsorption and surface cnergy according to Gibbs' equation (which may be thrown into the form U/c = KdT/dc, where U = excess concentration in surface layer, c = concentration, T = surface tension, and K is a constant), and pointed out that, according to this equation, degree of adsorption and change in surface tension vary directly. The present paper offers a somewhat different definition for the term adsorption; and sets up, in sweeping terms, the generalization that simple chemical reaction underlies the functioning of the flotation reagents which control mineral collection, when these reagents are soluble in and act from solution in the water of the pulp. Adsorption According to the modified definition, adsorption means concentration at an interface between different phases in a heterogeneous system (thus far the definition runs as before), by the action of some mechanism, of which nothing is properly implied in the word, and concerning which the user of the word is probably in entire ignorance. IN THE metallurgy of precious metals, it has been standard practice for years to use cyanogen compounds, so it was but natural that early investigators in the field of flotation should consider these compounds as possible flotation reagents. In Australian Patent 9508, of 1913, alkali cyanides were described as suitable reagents for the separation of heavy sulfide minerals, the reagents being employed either in an alka-line or neutral circuit. In U. S. Patent 1236501, of 1917, to John M. Tibbet, the use of cyanide in conjunction with soda ash or lime is described. One of the claims of this patent reads, "An improvement in the cyanide process for the treatment of ores comprising, mixing the ore with cyanide solution and oil and alkali: emulsifying the oil in the presence of the ore, the alkali and the cyanide solution, floating a portion of the values in the pulp by producing gas bubbles in the mixture-and removing the values floated." More recently, Sheridan and Griswold, in U. S. Patents 1421585 and 1427235, describe a somewhat similar process and have, successfully introduced it in. the mill of the Timber Butte Milling Co. U. S. Patent 1429544, of 1922, to Stevens, describes the use of double cyanides of copper, zinc, and lead. The success of cyanide as a reagent in the differential flotation of lead and zinc sulfides in highly complex ores is proof that these patents have a solid foundation.. Although the technique of their application to particular ores has been worked out in many cases, no one, so far as is known, has attempted to describe the nature of the action of the cyanide or to determine the ideal conditions for its, application. It was the purpose of the present investigation to gather information on these points. Naturally this would have been an exceedingly ambitious.

A theory has been developed describing the behavior of wells and reservoirs producing by the action of bottom water drives. It is assumed that the pressures are maintained above the bubble point, and that the permeability to viscosity ratio of the water in the flooded zone is the same as for the oil in the oil-saturated pay. Accordingly, the treatment is based on the homogeneous fluid potential theory. The effect of the difference in density between the oil and water is neglected. .4fter deriving the proper potential distrihutions, the nature of the rise of the water-oil interface below the producing wells is calculated. The primary clean-oil-production phase is expressed in terms of the displacement efficiency, defined as the fraction of the pay flooded out by the rising water table at tlle time of first water entry. The variation of this displacement efficiency is calculated as a function of the well spacing, pay thickness, the ratio of the horizontal to vertical permeability, and the well penetration. The important parameter, other than the well penetration, is found to be the ratio of the well separation to the thickness of the oil pay multiplied by the square root of the ratio of vertical to horizontal permeability. It was found that the displacement efficiency continually decreases as this parameter increases, and for values of the latter >3.5, the efficiency varies inversely as the square of the parameter. It also increases with decreasing well penetration. Perhaps the most striking result of this phase of the analysis is the conclusion that in order to explain the delay in entry of water in wells producing by bottom water drives for periods longer than a few days normal production, with drawdowns large compared with the differential density head between the oil and water, it is necessary to assume that the vertical permeability is a very low fraction of the horizontal permeability. An analysis is also given of the production history after the water has broken through, on the assumption that the production mechanism and details of the flow distribution continue to be the same as during the phase of clean-oil production. As is to be expected, it is found that the water cut will increase at an accelerated rate as production proceeds. However, the initial differences between systems of different well penetrations or well spacings with respect to the total clean-oil production gradually decrease in terms of the variation of the water-oil ratio with cumulative production. In particular, by the time the water-oil ratio has reached values of the order of 5 or greater the cumulative recoveries will generally differ much less among various producing systems than their corresponding clean-oil recoveries. Introduction On the basis of elementary geological principles, one may classify effective water-drive fields in two groups. In the first, the entry of water into the oil-producing formation may be characterized as an edge-water encroachment. This term is used to suggest that the motion of the water proceeds largely in a direction parallel to the planes of stratification. The Sydney coal field, the largest and most valuable in Nova Scotia, is situated on the northeastern coast of the Island of Cape Breton, extending from Mira Bay on the south to Cape Dauphin on the north, a distance of 30 miles, and has a general dip northeast under the sea. (Fig. 1. The field embraces the mining villages of Morien, Birchgrove and Reserve and the towns of Dominion, Glace Bay, Waterford and Sydney Mines. The city of Sydney is situated about midway between the northern and southern extremities of the field and on the western fringe of the productive coal measures. Sydney harbor crosses the coal field, cutting off direct rail connection between Sydney Mines and the greater part of the field to the southeast. (Fig. 2.) The coal measures are exposed in the cliffs on the coast line, which rise to an average height of 30 ft., and are almost continuous throughout the length of the field. The portion of the coal field under land forms a small segment of a circle, the greatest distance from the coast landwards is 9 miles, and it occupies an area of 200 sq. miles. The greatest distance developed seawards from the shore by mining operations is 2 miles. The strata maintain a regularity of dip at this distance, proving a submarine area of about 70 sq, miles. How much further the coal field extends seawards is unknown, but the indications are that it extends far beyond the present economical working limit and in all probability there is a vast submarine coal field. The productive coal measures are of Carboniferous age, these being underlain by beds of sandstone, locally classed as millstone grit, which define the southern limit of the field, while a spur of syenitic hills cuts off the coal-bearing strata on the north. Two main anticlinal folds having a general course easterly divide the field into three basins named from north to south: Sydney Mines-Lingan, Glace Bay and Morien. So far as the portion of the coal field already developed is concerned the general effect of these folds is to vary the direction and dip of the strata at different points of the several basins. INTRODUCTION For a number of reasons, the mineral processing industry has been slow to adopt significant automation of its processes. Most ore grinding operations can be operated manually so the pressure for automation to run the process has not been there. Furthermore, many plants had proven over years of operation that manual operation would produce a profit, so why automate? Until recently, the instrumentation necessary for automation of the grinding process was not available. All this has now changed, however. Increasing costs for labor, fuel, power, grinding media, reagants, and capital equipment have not been matched by the market price of the finished product. This cost-price squeeze has made it mandatory to reduce operating costs and improve the efficiency of the process to remain profitable. A number of other factors have added to the direct operating cost to make the problem even worse. These include environmental pressures to conserve natural resources and reduce smelter stack emissions; increased competition--especially from developing countries, varying economic conditions, stockpiling, governmental controls, and to top it all off, lower grade ore bodies. Although many of these other influences are good overall, they take their toll in cost per ton of delivered product. Fortunately, many operators are finding the solution to the cost-price squeeze in instrumentation and process control. Automated processes yield tighter spec. products, require less operating labor, produce more product from a given plant, and reduce unit cost by increasing process efficiency. The plant manager has a "handle" on the plant through process control so that he can change operating modes as economics dictate by changing the set point of some process controllers. He can even respond to economic conditions by switching control strategies from one that maximizes production to one that maximizes recovery, or minimizes unit cost, etc. This has all been made possible by the advent of on-line analytical instruments and practical process control computers. On-stream particle size (1), x-ray, and silica analyzers are now available and in use in many plants. Digital computer hardware and software has become practical so operators can use it without trying to become computer experts. Measurements of rate of growth, thermodymmic quantities, and partitioning of Mn are reported for high-purity eutectoid Fe-C and Fe-C-Mn steels for the auistenite-pearlite reaction. Evaluztion of the cotnstants of a derived-rate equation with these data indicate that Mn additions cause the decrease observed by increasivg the activation energy and apparent activation entropy or the movenment of complexes at the interface. A diffusion-controlled mechanism is not required. Appreciable partitioning of Mn to cementite occurs entirely behind the austenite-pearlite interface for more than 30°C of subcooling. ThE growth of pearlite from austenite has been extensively studied over a period of years. but the rate-controlling step in the process is not known nor is the mechanisrn of the effect of alloying elements understood. A comprehensive review of the subject has been given by Mehl and Hagel. The present study has been concerned with further considerations of the effects of alloying elements on the rate of growth of pearlite. Analytical relatioriships for the rate of growth of pearlite have been considered by Zener.2 Turnbull,3 Machlin,4 Cahn.5 Frye,6 and Frye et a1.7 The derived expressions in each case involve the free energy of the transformation. the interlamellar spacing. and some rate term of the nature of the diffusion coefficient. mobility or frequency of occurrence of some rate-determining step. The treatments. of course. differ in detail. Further consideration is given in the present paper to the equation of Frye, Stansbury. and McElroy which was derived from modified absolute rate theory without in any way specifying the mechanism of the reaction. Subsequently, Darken, Fisher, and Galligan8 have reported that a layer of ferrite separates pearlite from austenite at the growing interface (i,e., the advancing face of Fe3C is in contact with ferrite, not austenite) and the ratio of the thickness of this layer to the spacing of the pearlite has not been found to vary with alloy content or transformation temperature. This observation does not require any alteration in the above equation: however, it may require that a different significance be attached to the factor, AT. The AT term appears in Eq. The leach liquor is filtered to remove sulfur and gangue, then cooled in a crystallizer to precipitate lead chloride The slurry from the crystallizer is subjected to electrolysis to deposit lead chloride on the cathode plate. A bacterium, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, is of prime importance in the formation of acid drainage from pyritic material. Above pH 4.5, T. ferrooxidans increases initial acidification; below pH 4.5, it allows acidification to continue by oxidizing Fe2 +. Below a pH of approximately 2.5, the activity of F3+ is significant and results in steady-state cycling between oxidation of pyrite by Fe3 + and bacterial oxidation of Fe2 +. Laboratory and field tests demonstrate that inhibition of T. ferrooxidans by controlled release of anionic detergents can inexpensively reduce pyrite oxidation and acid formation.

At Bethlehem's Grace mine's 6000-tpd pelletizing plant a cascade control system is utilized to approach a constant magnetite filter cake moisture, a critical factor in obtaining quality green pellets. Variables being controlled by instrumentation are filter feed solids, filter tub level, first and second stage pump sump levels and thickener sludge level, all at varying feed rates. Startup difficulties, modifications and contemplated additions to obtain closer control of the moisture are discussed. Situated 45 miles west of Philadelphia and 50 miles southwest of Bethlehem Steel Co. 's Beth-lehem plant, the integrated Grace mine facilities produce 4000 tpd of high-quality iron ore pellets. Startup of the Grace mill was in November 1958, and iron concentrates were shipped until March 1960, when the pellet plant went into operation. The underground mine, when fully developed, will hoist about 9000 tpd, including development rock. The crude ore, which has an iron content of approximately 42%, is magnetically cobbed and crushed in closed circuit with %-in. slotted vibrating screens. The ore is washed and screened in the mill and the 1/4-in. screen product is again cobbed prior to feeding to the rod mills. Grinding is done in rod mills, and in ball mills that are in closed circuit with 30-in. cyclones, to 1% on 100 mesh and 65% -325 mesh. The ground ore is magnetically concentrated by three-drum permanent-type finisher magnets to 67% Fe. The magnetite concentrate is pumped from the mill to a 50-ft thickener in the pellet plant. The thickened magnetite concentrate is relayed to the filters through a two-stage pump arrangement. The filter cake is fed by belt from filter concentrate bins to mixer-muller belts where it is intimately mixed with bentonite and a slight amount of water for moisture control. The fluffed concentrate then drops into balling cones. The green pellets from the balling cones are fed in a prescribed feed pattern to shaft furnaces through the use of shuttle car mechanisms. The green pellets are dried, heated to 2500°F and cooled to 1200°F as they descend through the furnace and into pellet coolers where the pellets are further reduced in temperature to 250°F. Heat is recovered in the cooling process through the use of air-to-air heat exchangers. The cooled pellets discharge on a rubber conveyor belt and are transferred to 6000-ton pellet railroad loading bin. The final pellet product consists of 90% +'1/4 in. material (after tumble testing1) and contains 66% Fe plus 3% silica. It has been the usual practice to maintain constant filter tank level by pumping an excess constant volume and using a moveable fishtail splitter to divert the desired amount of slurry to the filter tank. The excess from the fishtail and from the filter overflow pipe, which maintains a constant level, is returned to the source. Being rugged individualists, they frequently seem intolerant of opinions that conflict with their own. However, one may suspect that controversy is often more apparent than real. For example, at last summer's meeting of the American Mining Congress, Ira B. Joralemon and Reno H. Sales, discussing "Mining Geology, Today and Tomorrow," seemed to be in serious disagreement over various phases of the subject; but much of this arises from the different angles of approach of the two distinguished and successful ore finders.

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY Complex copper-lead-zinc ore is mined from underground workings high in the Western Cordillera of the Andes mountains about 100 km in a stralght line north of the city of Arequipa in southern Peru. The Madrigal mine is situated in a steep-walled canyon into which the six operating levels "daylight". Production is from cut-and-fill stopes currently producing approximately 740 dry metric tons per day. The Santa Rosa vein, the most important producer in the district, outcrops for a distance of about 4 km, bearing N 75º W and dipping about 70º NE. In places the vein splits into two or three branches; widths of each vary between 1 and 4 m and total mineralized widths of up to over 8 m occur. Principal ore minerals are chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Ore reserve grades for the Madrigal mine average about 1.45% Cu, 2.6% Pb and 5.0% Zn, 2.9 ozAg per metric ton. Thirty years ago a party of American Engineers, with members of their families, belonging to the four national engineering societies, sailed for Europe and visited England and the Paris Exposition of 1889 and received many courtesies, official, professional, and individual. Plans: have been made for a reunion dinner to be held in New York City, about May 26, at which it is hoped that all survivors, ladies as well as men, of that trip may meet again. Early this year at the University of Arizona in Tucson, a survey was made of student opinion about the minerals industry. Over 100 of the three page questionnaires were completed and these were analyzed by the following categories: 40 Mining Engineering students, 20 Geological Engineering with 2 Geophysical Engineering students, 15 Geology students, 7 Metallurgical Engineering, 26 Underclassmen, 29 Graduate students and a composite of 84 total students. Not all of the results of the survey were predictable. After graduation there is a strong preference toward going to work in the mineral industries. The next most popular options, but trailing the first choice greatly, was graduate work or employment in another industry. A smattering of other choices were for teaching, government or research. None checked the box for drop out.

TWO intermediate phases enter into equilibrium with the primary solid solutions of titanium.' The TiMn2 phase was identified by Wallbaum2 as of the C14 type isomorphous with MgZn2. Contrary to Maykuth, et al.,¹ the phase occuring at about the 50-50 atomic proportion has been shown to derive from a peritectoid reaction.:' A 30 day anneal at 900°C of an alloy containing 52 wt pct Mn developed sufficient of the new phase to give a clear and predominant diffraction pattern. The powder pattern was taken in a 14 cm diameter powder camera using filtered Cu Ka radiation. In all, 75 lines were recognized and measured. Interplanar spacing and observed intensities for the first 26 of these are given in Table I.
