THE memorable features of American history have been making fast during the last century, and notably so since 1860; and they are by no means confined to political or to any one branch of scientific development. Of all the industrial arts, none show a greater change or a mightier progress than the Bessemer manufacture. And this year, while we are celebrating the first centennial of our national life, we can also celebrate the first decennial of American Bessemer practice. While not forgetting or undervaluing what has been done in other countries, I have thought that a brief history of the introduction and development of the Pneumatic or Bessemer process in America would be of interest. In 1863 the Kelly Pneumatic Process Company was formed and an arrangement entered into with William Kelly, who had taken out letters-patent of the United States, Nos. 16,444 ; 17,628, re¬issued as 505; 18,910, dated January 10th, 1857 ; June 23d, 1857; November 3d, 1857; and December 22d, 1857, respectively. This association was composed of the Cambria Iron Company, E. B. Ward, Park Brothers & Co., Lyon, Shorb & Co., Z. S. Durfee, and, later, Chouteau, Harrison & Valle joined the combination. Not satisfied with possessing the control of the Kelly patent, they sent Mr. Z. S. Durfee to England, to secure for this country Mushet's patent on recarburization, No. 17,389, dated May 26th, 1857, the same having been taken out in England on September 22d, 1856. In this Mr. Durfee was successful. Previous to the application of William Kelly for a patent, Henry Bessemer, of England, had taken out patents dated February 12th, 1856, and August 25th, 1856, in this country. Kelly claimed priority in the discovery of the principles of the process, and the Patent-office allowed his claim by granting him his patents. In the autumn of 1862 Mr. Alexander L. Holley, while in England, was impressed with the importance of Mr. Bessemer's inven¬tion, and so fully foresaw its future, that, upon his return to the United States, he induced Messrs. John A. Griswold and John F. Winslow, of Troy, New York, to join him in endeavoring to possess Bessemer's American patents. Mr. Holley returned to England in

Service failures in brass condenser tubes are often due to corrosion. One of the commonest types of corrosion reveals a surface structure of redeposited copper.' The study of the effect of alloy addition agents in preventing this kind of corrosion has received impetus from the extensive publication of Bengough and May.2 The mechanism of such inhibition gauged from immersion corrosion,2 cell corrosion,3 and electrolytic potential4 measurements is controversial. This controversy may be attributed in part to a lack of definite knowledge5 of the actual nature of the initial films formed in corrosion experiments. In our own corrosion work on copper and 70-30 brass this lack became apparent and necessitated an examination of surface films by X-ray and electron diffraction methods. The present paper is but an introduction to the subject of inhibition and reports the structure of films formed in active corrodents. Experimental Procedure The arsenical coppers and brasses used in this investigation were made by one of the writers* in the plant of the Revere Copper and Brass Co. at Rome, N. Y. Standard commercial melting practice was followed. O.F.H.C. copper and electrolytic zinc were used and all arsenic additions were made by additions of a master copper alloy. The final analyses are given in Table I. Likewise, the extrusion, cold-rolling, and intermediate anneals employed followed standard usage. Final heat-treatments were given to all materials to produce a similar grain size (0.035 to 0.045 mm. for brass and 0.015 to 0.025 for copper) for the alloys containing various percentages of arsenic. Samples 1/2 by M by 1/4 in. were cut from sheet material resurfaced and finished with 0000 metal-lographic papers. The surfaces were all degreased in alcohol and benzine before immersion. After immersion in the corrodent, they were washed gently in tap water, dipped first in alcohol and then in pure benzine and allowed to dry in the diffraction apparatus. The creep of 043 was studied over the temperature range 1650" to 3200°F and over the stress range 3000 to 44,000 psi. The steady-state creep rate over this range of stress and temperature can be expressed by the equation where A is a constant, is the stress, and is -0.8 x 103 psi-'. Over a narrow range of stress variations c0 a and for this proportionality n varies from 3 to 30 in accordance with the relation n = aB. Above about 2400° F, H, the apparent activation energy for creep, is 110,000 cal per mole, a value about equal to that estimated for self-diffusion in this alloy. Below 2400°F, H increases with decreasing temperature reaching a value of -125,000 cal per mole at 1700° F. In this temperature region, H appears to be a function of the interstitial concentration of the alloy. MOST of the detailed creep studies of dispersion strengthened metals have been concerned with metals having fcc structures. However, there are a number of important refractory alloys with bcc structures that derive part of their high temperature strength from an interstitial phase and whose creep behavior has not been well defined. This paper describes the creep behavior of the bcc alloy, D43, over the temperature range 1650" to 3200°F (0.4 to 0.7 Thm) and over the stress range 3000 to 44,000 psi. In addition to colum-bium, this alloy contains 10 pct W. 1 pct Zr, and sufficient carbon (-0.1 pct) to form a carbide dispersion throughout the matrix of the alloy. The effects of variations in temperature and stress on the steady-state creep rate of this alloy are presented in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Creep tests were made in a vacuum of 106 torr under constant tensile stress conditions using a Full-man-type lever arm.' Creep specimens were machined from 0.020-in. D43 sheet (grain size -5 x l0-4 in.) processed in a duplex condition (solution annealed -2900°F, 40 pct reduction in area, aged 2600°F). The specimens were tested in this condition without further heat treatment. Specimen extensions over 1-in. gage lengths were continuously recorded using a high temperature strain gage extensometer. Differential temperature and stress measurements were used to determine temperature and stress dependencies of the creep rate. Activation energies were calculated from the changes in strain rate induced by abrupt shifts in the temperature during constant stress creep tests. The 100°F temperature shifts used in most of the activation energy determinations required 15 to 90 sec depending upon the temperature at which the shift was made. The dependence of strain rate on stress was determined by measuring the change in strain rate for incremental stress reductions during constant temperature tests. It has been shown that columbium-base alloys such as D43 are susceptible to contamination by gaseous interstitial elements during vacuum heat treatments.' In this regard, it is unlikely that these alloys can be heat treated without some loss or gain of interstitial elements despite the precautions taken to control the heat treating environment. However, several factors suggest that changes in interstitial concentrations of the specimens during testing did not affect the results presented in this paper. First, the dependence of the creep rate on the stress or temperature determined during the course of a single creep test showed no variations with the duration of the test. A variation would be expected if a loss or gain in interstitial concentration during the course of the test affected results. In addition, precautions taken during this investigation to minimize interstitial contamination by wrapping the gage lengths of the specimens with various foils2 (Mo, Ta, W) did not produce a detectable change in the stress and temperature dependencies relative to the unwrapped specimens. The averages of duplicate analyses for carbon and oxygen in several specimens determined before and after creep testing are listed in Table I. The combined nitrogen and hydrogen concentrations which were ordinarily less than 50 ppm did not change in a detectable way with creep testing. The analyses show that only minor changes in carbon concentration occurred during creep testing except for specimen 4. This specimen which was tested at 3100°F lost a significant amount of its carbon concentration to the vacuum environment. Specimen 1 gained 100 ppm of O, while specimens 2, 3, and 4, which were tested at progressively higher temperatures, lost increasing portions of their initial oxygen concentrations during testing. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The Temperature Dependence of the Creep Rate. The apparent activation energy for creep, H, was de-rived from creep curves similar to that shown in Fig. 1. Steady-state creep was rapidly attained at the beginning of the test and with each change in temperature. This behavior suggests that the alloy rapidly attains a stable structure with each shift in temperature or that the structure is constant throughout the test. Since the dispersion will tend to stabilize the structure, the latter is probably the case. The activation energy was found to be independent of the direction of the temperature shift and the magnitude of the shift (50" or 100°F). LITTLE work has been done in the field of the nickel-tin binary system. The complete diagram has been investigated on two occasions, but the results are in very poor agreement. The structure of a compound NiSn, and the solubility of tin in nickel have been determined by X-ray methods. Several investigations have been made of the liquidus curve, and the compositions of the eutectics have been determined. A study of the literature, however, shows that there is no satisfactory agreement between the data presented in the various papers. The present investigation was undertaken in an attempt to determine the equilibrium conditions, and to correlate X-ray with metallographic data. The equilibrium diagram was determined by thermal and metallo-graphic means, and the solubility of tin in nickel further investigated with X-rays. Powder diagrams were made of the intermetallic com-pounds, and three of the structures were partly determined. No attempt was made to determine the range of homogeneity of the inter-metallic compounds.

The results of a study on the preparation of thin-film capacitor structures are discussed. The dietectric source material was quartz which was sputtered and deposited onto aluminum electrodes and counter-electroded to complete the metal-oxide-metal structures. This configuration was utilized to evaluate the dielectric, the device characteristics, and related process parameters. The effect of gas sputtering pressure, magnetic field strength, source-to-substrate distance, and power density on the rate of deposition is shown. Increased film thickness uniformity over a 3 by 3 in. area by optimum substrate positioning is indicated. Dielectric constant, dissipation factor, dielectric breakdown strength, insulation resistance, heat treatment, capacitance, and dissipation over the range 400 Hz to 5 MHz are reported. In the fabrication of silicon-integrated circuits, silicon dioxide has found use as a material suitable as a diffusion mask, for surface passivation of the silicon, and for protection of conductive films used for interconnections. Its use as a dielectric for thin-film capacitors in film hybrid circuits has been limited, to a degree, for lack of a compatible processing technique and because of its relatively low dielectric constant. With the recent advent of practical metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) field effect devices, the material is now being used to insulate the gate electrode from the conducting channel in the silicon. In this latter application, more stringent requirements have been imposed on .the oxide. A comprehensive resume of the use of silicon dioxide in integrated silicon device technology has been compiled including oxide film and bulk properties, method of oxide formations, and their applications.' A relatively new process to deposit SiO, and other dieIectrics is by rf sputtering, and the purpose of this paper is to describe the behavior of capacitors fabricated with a dielectric which has been sputtered from a quartz target and to indicate the relative effect of several of the process parameters on the film deposition. Work on rf sputtering of SiO2 and other dielectrics has been reported utilizing a triode type of sputtering system as described herein or a diode self-sustained glow discharge system. 2-8 SPUTTERING The process occurs during an electrical discharge in a gas plasma which provides the ions for acceleration to the target to produce the desired sputtering. The necessary plasma can be generated by a dc glow discharge through application of a high potential between two electrodes at approximately 2 to 10 x 10-2

CARL HENRICH (communication to the Secretary*).-I have read with much interest the discussions of my paper by Messrs. A. S. Dwight, E. P. Mathewson, Win. B. Boggs, Jos. W. Richards, and W. C. Smith. Mr. Dwight's acknowledgment that he always-in lead smelting¬obtained better results by figuring A1203 as an acid in his slags, I may take as a confirmation of my views, notwithstanding his later conversion by, the late T. S. Austin to the latter's empirical view and way of neglecting the consideration of A1203 altogether in the composition of slags-letting the slags "dissolve" in Al203. I have a strong suspicion that Mr. Austin, in a large custom smelting plant at El Paso, has been able to keep the alumina percentage of his slags sufficiently low, not to give him much trouble, although I have also a suspicion that his furnace foreman may have had a somewhat differing opinion of the practical working of the "dissolving" theory,, whenever its applicability was tested to its limits. That Austin should have conceived the notion that the Ca of CaF2 would enter into a slag as CaO, seems hardly in accord with the recognized ability of that late metallurgist. It is a well-recognized fact that even small amounts of CaF2 will reduce the viscosity of a slag; but I did not think anyone ever had an idea that CaF2, in some mysterious way, parted with its F and coupled itself with 0 to satisfy a craving for CaO on the part of 802-least of all in a lead furnace. The "dissolving" theory for CaF2 was doubtless appropriate, and an improvement on figuring the Ca of CaF2 as CaO to satisfy the demand of Si02 for RO bases. However, I cannot understand the rationality of extending this "dissolving" theory to A1203 and to ZnO. It would be interesting to have more specific data from Mr. Mathewson in regard to the actual composition-analyses-of the slags made, when he had these unusually high alumina slags in Colorado. We "old" smelters all know that within certain limits, usually found out by rather tough experience, we could safely "disregard" A1203. In fact, I believe, we never really analyzed for alumina, except in slag analyses, when we

COAL preparation will be the main topic discussed at the first fall meeting of the Coal Division at Pittsburgh, Sept. 11, 12 and 13, though valuation, mergers, safety, stream pollution and other topics will not' be neglected. It is particularly appropriate that the great changes taking place in preparing coal for the market should be discussed at length where in the plants of the Pittsburgh Coal Co. and others the opportunity is afforded to see on a large scale just what is being accomplished. In wartime, the United States broke all records in coal production, but, as the late Franklin K. Lane pointed out, every fifth car shipped consisted of dirt. Obviously that constituted a big bur- den on industry and, in the remaking of the business which is now taking place both in the anthracite and bituminous fields, clean coal has properly enough be- come a watchward. Central coal-cleaning plants are being erected as a part answer to the puzzled inquiry of those familiar with metal mining as to why miners of coal have so long been content with what are relatively small units of production. Gradually big collieries comparable in tonnage output to the biggest copper mines are being built, and excellent examples are to be seen near Pittsburgh. "The reduction works of the Boston & Montana Reduction department, near the north end of this dam is one of the reduction plants belonging to the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, the other being at Anaconda. These works employ about 1,100 men and have a capacity of about 3,800 tons of crude ore per day. This plant is now being remodeled to embody results of experiments and investigations which have been made with a view to more economic.al treatment of ores. A brief description of the plant as it will be after the remodelling is as follows:Concentrator Department: Consists of six units or sections, each section treating from 550 to 600 tons of crude ore per day. This department is not being. remodelled at the present time. A concentrating process, however, has been developed and partially installed in the old mill, and an experimental section embodying this concentration process has also been installed at the concentrator at Anaconda."

GERMANY'S recent collapse and the occupation by the Allies of the coal fields of the Ruhr, the Saar, Silesia, Poland, and Czechoslovakia have focused attention on the postwar coal problems of Europe. American coal operators are interested deeply in what is happening in Britain, particularly in the discussion of plans to rehabilitate and reorganize the entire British coal mining industry, as such reorganization will probably determine the place Britain will occupy in the European coal markets for the next few decades. The continuing decline of British out-ut per man-shift, particularly during wartime, has resulted in a most serious effort to determine whether this unfortunate trend is due to the physical condition of the coal seams, poor management, poor engineering and planning, inadequate use of power and machinery, or failure of labor to co-operate with management.

Some simple models of solutions are described; these include the regular solution, the subregular solution, and the quasichemical model. The assunzption underlying these models, the physical signzficance thereof, and the experimental manifestations are discussed. Examples are presented from the fields of liquid and solid metallic solutions, liquid slags, mattes, liquid and solid ionic solutions, and mixed carbides to show under what conditions and for which systems these solution models are fair descriptions. The deviations of real solutions from the models are of theoretical interest. Some such deviations, both for dilute and for concentrated solutions, arc pointed out and their Physical sigtzzficance discussed. DURING the past half century there has been a gradual accumulation of thermodynamic data for systems of interest to the metallurgist. There remain many gaps in the data, however, and the metallurgist must often face the problem of estimation of thermodynamic quantities where measured values do not exist. One might hope that the experimental progress would be matched by theoretical advances which would make such estimations possible with a high degree of confidence. However, theoretical progress has been disappointingly slow even for the simplest kinds of solutions, and since the multicomponent systems in which the metallurgist is interested are very complex, one cannot expect theory to be of much help to the metallurgist. In this situation, therefore, it seems worthwhile to examine some simple models of solutions from two points of view: firstly, to see if such crude models represent the thermodynamic facts in as many types of solutions as possible sufficiently well for the needs of the metallurgist, and secondly to see what the deviations from such models show to be important for consideration by theorists. BOND ENERGY MODELS OF SOLUTIONS The simple models that we will examine from these points of view may be termed statistical models, in that they are concerned with the thermodynamic consequences of some simple assumptions about the energy of an assembly of atoms, molecules, or ions, and do not inquire into the physical basis of the interaction. The underlying assumption of these models is that the energy of an assembly of molecules (by which we include also atoms or ions) is given by the sum over all interaction energies of molecules taken two at a time; we will discuss only those models in which the pairwise interactions are restricted to those between nearest neighbors. Thus, in a pure substance of bond energy EAA, the internal energy (with respect to some specific reference state) will be expressed as NAA EAA where NAA is the number of nearest-neighbor pairs. A solution of molecules A and B will be characterized by NAA EAA + NBB EBB + NAB EAB where the Eij represent the bond energies of the nearest-neighbor i-j pairs. If one assumes that the EAA and EBB are the same in the pure components as in the solution, and that the coordination numbers in the two pure substances and in the solution are the same, then the energy of the solution with respect to the pure components (i.e., the energy of solution) is a function of the following linear combination of the bond energies: EAB - 1/2(EAA +EBB) = w. The thermodynamically ideal solution is defined as one in which the activity of each component is equal to the mole fraction of that component at all concentrations and all temperatures. The crystal structures of Ti2Cu, Ti2Ni, Ti4Ni2O, and Ti4Cu20 have been determined using powder specimens examined by X-ray and neutron diffraction. Lattice constants have been determined for all four phases using X-ray powder diffraction films. Atom positional parameters of all four phases have been determined from observed neutron intensities. X-ray diffraction calculated intensity data have been presented also for the phase Ti2Cu to point out the particular suitability of neutron diffraction in this case. Interatomic distances have been determined using the positional parameters obtained from neutron diffraction. ALTHOUGH some investigations of the crystal structures have been made of these four compounds previously,'-13 it was the purpose of the present investigation to expand the previous work in order to locate the various atoms, determine their coordinates, and to confirm or to correct some of the previous work. It was convenient to group these four compounds together since they are related chemicallv and/or structurally. The compound Ti2Cu is tetragonil; and Ti2Ni, Ti4Ni2O, and Ti4CU2O are all large fees of the same space group. Ti2Cu has been previously reported as a fee phase by Laves and Wallbaum;1 and Rostoker2 which was possibly the oxide phase, Ti4Cu20. Joukainen, Grant, and Floe;3 and Trzebiatowski, Berak, and Ramotow-ski4 have also reported a phase of this composition. karlsson5 has reported a small fct phase of the composition Ti3Cu which may be the presently discussed Ti2Cu phase. More recently Ence and Margolin6 have reported a small fct phase for Ti2Cu and the present authors7 together with Nevitt8 have briefly reported it to be a bet related to the fct with a co three times the length of the co of the fct and have also reported that this phase has a very limited composition. Further refinements will be reported which have varied some of the parameters of this bct structure slightly. Ti2Ni has been reported as a fee phase by Laves and wallbaum;1 Duwez and taylor;9 Rostoker;2 Poole and Hume-Rothery;10 and Yurko, Barton, and parr.11 In a later paper Yurko, Barton, and parr12 have given the complete structure of this phase based on an X-ray diffraction study which was independently confirmed with neutron diffraction by Mueller and knott.7 Additional crystal structure information will be given. Ti4Ti2O, Ti4Cu2O, and a number of other compounds including Ti4Fe2O have been reported as fcc phases by Rostoker,2 and more recently Nevitt13 has confirmed the Ti4Ti2O phase. Rostoker,2 however has reported diffraction lines for Ti4Fe2O which do not have all odd or all even indices. These lines, therefore, cannot be observed if this compound has a fee structure. This same error has crept into the diffraction results reported for TiNi2O and Ti4Cu20 in the ASTM powder data which has been credited from Rostoker's data. Complete crystal structures of these two phases will be presented. Although all four of these structures have large unit cells and hence do not lend themselves for completely resolved neutron powder patterns, a sufficient number of individual reflections was observed for solving the structure. They also serve as good examples of some of the advantages to be gained by using both neutron and X-ray diffraction techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE All of the alloys were prepared by arc melting. The starting metals had the following purity: Cu 99.999 pct, Ni 99.83 pct, and Ti 99.92 pct. Oxygen was introduced into the two oxide phases as chemically pure TiO2, with the remainder of the titanium coming from the above mentioned metal. All of the sample buttons were annealed in evacuated Vycor tubes, the two binary phases for 5 days at 700°C and the two oxide phases for 3 days at 900°C. Oxygen analyses were performed on all four phases by two independent laboratories with the following amounts of oxygen present in atomic percent; Ti2Cu-0.06, Ti2Ni-1.03, Ti4Ni2O-13.95, and Ti4Cu20-13.87. The stoichiometric amount for the oxide phases is 14.29 at. pct. Since all of the samples were very brittle they were easily reduced to a powder for diffraction measurements. The lattice constants given in Table I were determined for the four compounds from X-ray diffraction patterns of powder samples exposed to filtered copper radiation using a 114.59 mm diam Debye-Scherrer type camera using the Straumanis loading. None of the patterns showed a detectable amount of a second phase. The lattice constants were obtained from an IBM 704 computer program employing a least squares treatment with systematic correction terms as previously reported.14

THIS paper deals with only one step in the treatment of ore at the West End mill; not because the other steps are repetitions of practice in other mills, but because in this particular step there is in use the Trent agitator. This device, although it has apparently failed in many mills, is here giving excellent service and has proved to be well adapted for making a thorough replacement of pregnant solution with a minimum amount of barren solution. The strong and weak points of this agitator, its present simple construction, and its use as a thickener for agitator or battery pulp are features of interest; but perhaps the point of greatest interest to the metallurgist in this day of continuous decantation is its use in a series of tanks for slime treatment by the replacement method. The agitating department of the West End mill consists of six redwood tanks, 24 ft. in diameter, 18 ft. high, each equipped with aTrent agitator, a centrifugal pump, and a motor. The pulp is transferred by a pump from the top of a flat-bottomed tank to a set of arms and nozzles in the bottom of the tank, at just sufficient pressure to cause the arms to revolve. This paper deals with only one step in the treatment of ore at the West End mill; not because the other steps are repetitions of practice in other mills, but because in this particular step there is in use the Trent agitator: This device, although it has apparently failed in many mills, is here giving excellent service and has proved to be well adapted for making a thorough replacement of pregnant solution with a minimum amount of barren solution. The strong and weak points of this agitator, its present simple construction, and its use as a thickener for agitator or battery pulp are features of interest; but perhaps the point of greatest interest to the metallurgist in this day of continuous decantation is its use in a series of tanks for slime treatment by the replacement method. The agitating department of the West End mill consists of six redwood tanks, 24 ft. in diameter, 18 ft. high, each equipped with a Trent agitator, a centrifugal pump, and a motor. The pulp is transferred by a pump from the top of a flat-bottomed tank to a set of arms and nozzles in the bottom of the tank, at just sufficient pressure to cause the arms to revolve. In examining steel under the microscope, one is constantly confronted with structures that are difficult to interpret. Recently, in a collection of samples for exhibition purposes, the writer found a piece of open-hearth runner metal, 2 in. (50 mm.) in diameter, that had been fractured for use as a sample of cast-steel structure. On polishing and etching a section for the purpose of photographing a field to typify the microstructure of steel in the "as cast" condition, a variety of structures was found (Fig. 1) so arranged as to arouse interest at once. For a distance of about 0.065 in. (1.6 mm.) from the skin of the runner, normal ingot structure was found (Fig. 2); this was followed by a zone, about 0.215 in. (5.5 mm.) wide, of considerably lower carbon content in which occurred a most pronounced Widmannstattian structure (Fig. 3); from this point on to the center of the runner, the metal was again of normal ingot structure (Fig. 4). Representative samples taken from the metal in the three zones showed the following analysis: Carbon Nickel Chromium Per Cent. Per Cent. PeR Cent. Metal from skin........................... 0.34 1.26 0.63 Widmannstattian zone.................... 0.21 1.18 0.63 Metal from center......................... 0.34 1.32 0.67 Such a condition might result from decarburization followed by recarburization of the skin. This section came from one of the branch runners to the bottom of the mold, not from the main runner, and it is difficult to conceive of decarburization occurring in this portion of a runner. If the metal were stripped while quite hot, some oxidation would take place but the recarburization is unaccounted for. It could not occur by segregation after solidification—the tendency then is for diffusion and homogeneity. The following seems to fit the conditions and is offered as an explanation. The outside layer of normal structure 0.065 in. (1.6 mm.) thick was chilled on the walls of the runner brick when the molten metal first entered the runner. The Red-Ash colliery was the scene, March 6, 1900, of an explosion by which some fifty men were killed or wounded, and much property was injured or destroyed. On March 19th, the earliest date at which entrance was practicable, I examined the mine with the view of determining the extent, cause and point of origin of the explosion, and with the permission of Mr. F. Howald, the manager, and the owners of the property, for whom the examination was made, I present in this paper some results of that examination, comprising the essential portions of my report to them. Location and Plan of the Mine. The Red-Ash colliery, situated on the south side of New river, next below the Rush Run mine, with which the underground workings are connected, is a drift-mine, the entrance to which is on a slope, about 500 ft. above the river. (Fig. 1 is a plan of the workings, in which the points where human bodies were found are designated by numbers.)

WHAT are known as insulating firebrick are lightweight firebrick with low thermal conductivity designed primarily for use in direct contact with furnace gases. These are a recent development in the refractories industry, and are really an outgrowth of the type of insulating brick suitable for use behind refractory walls developed by the insulation manufacturers. To differentiate between these two types of brick, the manufacturers have recently agreed upon the use of the term "Insulating Firebrick" to apply to the type of brick suited for use in direct contact with furnace gases, and the term "Insulating Brick" for the type suitable for use behind refractory walls. Insulation was applied to steam pipes as far back as 1900. This was a low-temperature insulation, the most common type being magnesia blocks. The next development was applying insulation to the outside of furnace walls, a service which necessitated an insulating material of higher temperature resistance. Natural diatomaceous earth, both in the powdered and brick form, was used; this was efficient and is still used extensively for backing up refractory walls where the inner surface temperature of the insulation does not exceed 1600° F.
