THE subject of my talk is, "What 'the college, student expects when he gets out of college." Since all of us, here tonight are engineers, I think it will be proper to limit the discussion to "What the engineering student expects when he emerges from college." It might be well to con-sider just why we chose engineering rather than some other of the many courses open to us. We certainly did not choose it because it is easy nor because we thought it would be a very pleasurable way to spend four years of our lives. The majority of students who choose this profession have a pretty well-formed idea of what an engineering course requires. They at least know that they must work to re-ceive their credits. The minority, which is no small num-ber, are soon disillusioned and as a result they either quit college entirely or they join the' Commerce School. I asked a number of my fellow students just what it was that induced them to join the engineering profession, but it was hard to obtain a clear cut statement from any of them. Some said it was due to environment; others said, they took it because they liked it, and still others said they took it because their folks wanted them to. These state-ments are rather vague and incomplete, but underlying them all is something that the fellows found hard to ex-press. I think it is this: To the layman there is something of romance and adventure about the engineering profes-sion, and this fact coupled with the reputed high salaries and high commands of certain noted engineers no doubt fired our imaginations and consequently led us to join the ranks of the engineers. No doubt many engineers have gone out into the world and have found little romance or adventure .attached to their work, but nevertheless it is an occupation of a wide diversity of interest, of constant change of scene, and of vivid and human relations.

Last November, when the British Educational Mission was visiting this country, letters were sent to the various mining schools asking what arrangements had been made for cooperating with British and. French schools. Of the eleven schools from which replies were received, none had taken any definite steps in this direction. The Colorado School of Mines, though, stated that it was offering scholarships to all men who had served in the U. S. Army and Navy during the war. A letter was also sent to Sir Henry Miers, Vice-chancellor of the University of Manchester, who was the head of the British Mission. He replied as follows: "In my opinion the mining profession is second to none in the responsibility of the duties which it involves or to which it leads in all parts of the world; also it is a. profession in which the student or teacher has much to gain by migrating to foreign countries. This applies in a special degree to British students coming to America where they will be able to enlarge their views by a widened experience. We (the Mission) have everywhere found the most, cordial acceptance of such proposals. Several of the British Universities have recently instituted a new doctorate of philosophy attainable after 2 or 3 years course of advanced study; this scheme includes Oxford and Manchester. The conditions admitting to the degree course are that the applicant should be a graduate of an approved University and should show evidence that he is qualified to pursue the course which lie proposes." In a conversation with Prof. Alfred C. Lane, of Tufts College, Sir Henry Miers said that students from Great Britain should be most easily attracted to America, both to universities and colleges and technological institutions.. THE Mining Methods Committee during the past year has spent much of its time developing the interest of members of the Institute in the work that comes under its direction. The response on the part of the membership has been most encouraging and in order to give a concrete form to the program which it hopes to develop, an "Outline for Papers on Mining Methods" has been drawn up and is herewith submitted for consideration. This outline has slowly taken shape until it now represents ideas contributed by a great many men, and it is hoped that it will be suggestive and helpful in the preparation of papers. This program can be used for the preparation of papers covering single large operations or, preferably, as the basis for a description of methods and the presentation of results obtained either in different districts or in different branches of the industry. The Committee presents this outline for the consideration of the various Sections of the Institute with the request that they will endeavor to interest the members of the Sections in covering comprehensively the mining operations with which they are connected. It is not the plan of the Committee to publish a paper on every mine, giving all the details outlined, but rather that an engineer familiar with a district prepare the general information and engineers of each important mine in the district compile the specific information of the mine with which they are connected. The general information and the specific information shall be sent to the Committee, and with this information the Committee will prepare a paper on the results obtained under the various mining methods in the different districts. The Committee requests that all papers shall be compiled under the direction of the Chief Engineer of the company and then submitted to the General Manager before acceptance for publication or compilation and tabulation with other similar data. The interaction of the crlloying eletnenls, nickel and chromium, with the impurity elements, antimony, pIzosphorus, tin, and arsenic, to producse reversible temper brittleness in a series of high-purity steels containing 0.40 wt pct C has been investigated. The alloyed steels contained approximately 3.5 pcl Ni, 1.7 pct Cr, and 0.05 to 0.08 pct of the particular irnpurity to be investigated. Susceptibility to teirlper embrittlement was measured by comparing the notched-bar transition temperature of each steel after quenching from the final temper and after very slow cooling (step cooling;) following the final temper. A plain carbon steel without alloying elements, bu/ ud/h 0.08 pel Sh, does not embrittle when step-cooled through the emzbrittling range of temperatures. The same embrittling treatment, applied to a steel with about the same antinzony content but with nickel and chvonziunz added, causes a 700°C increase in transition temperature. If chromium or nickel is the only alloying element, the increase in transition temperature is only 50%, again with antimony present. A carbon-free iron containing nickel, chromium, and antimony shou~s a 200°C shift in transition temperature for the same thermal treatment. Specific alloy-impurily interactions are also observed for the other impurity elements, phosphorus, tin, and arsenic. Additional investigations involving electron microscopy, trzicrohard-ness tests of vain boundaries, minor additions of zirconiutn and the rare earth and noble metals, nzainly with negative results, are also described. HE particular type of embrittlement investigated is that which is encountered in alloy steels tempered in the temperature range from about 350" to 525'C or slowly cooled through this range of temperatures when tempered above this range. This type of embrittlement is sometimes called reversible temper brittleness to distinguish it from the embrittlement indicated by a minimum in the room-temperature V -notch Charpy energy vs tempering-temperature curve encountered in the range 28 0" to 350°C. Temper brittle-ness seriously restricts the use of many alloy steels since it precludes tempering or use in the embrittling range of temperatures and may significantly raise the ductile-brittle transition temperature of heavy-section forgings and castings tempered above the embrittling range, since such sections cannot be sufficiently rapidly cooled after tempering to avoid embrittlement. The very voluminous literature of temper brittle-ness up to about 1960 has been reviewed by woodfine' and LOW.' Of particular significance to the present investigation was the demonstration by Balajiva, Cook, and worn3 that high-purity Ni-Cr steel does not exhibit temper brittleness and the subsequent detailed and systematic study by Steven and Balajiva~ of the effect of impurity additions on the susceptibility to embrittlement of Ni-Cr steels. Steven and Balajiva showed that, of the impurities which may be found in commercial steels, Sb, As, P, Sn, Mn, and Si could all produce temper brittleness in a high-purity Ni-Cr steel. The principal purpose of the present investigation was to study the effects of particular alloy-impurity combinations on susceptibility to temper embrittlement. The steels used were high-purity 0.30 to 0.40 wt pct C steels containing 3.5 wt pct Ni and 1.7 wt pct Cr, separately or in combination. The susceptibility of these steels was then determined when approximately 500 ppm by weight of antimony, arsenic, phosphorus, or tin were added as an impurity. The melting, casting, and forging practices used in the preparation of the materials investigated are described in Appendix A. Table A-I in this appendix shows the analysis of all steels to be discussed. The steels were produced as 20- or 2-lb heats. The smaller heats were used after it had been demonstrated (see Appendix B) that a small, round, notched test specimen could be used to measure the shift in the ductile-brittle transition temperature caused by temper brittleness with about the same result as that obtained by Charpy testing. HEAT TREATMENT Unless otherwise noted, all steels were tested for embrittlement in the tempered martensitic condition. A typical heat treatment for a 0.40 C, 3.5 Ni, 1.7 Cr steel was: 1 hr at 870"C, in argon, quench into oil at 100"C, quench into liquid nitrogen, temper 1 hr at 625"C, and water-quench. The warm oil quench was used where quench-cracking was encountered; otherwise the initial quench was into room-temperature oil or water. For other compositions austenitizing temperatures were 50°C above Acs with the remainder of the thermal cycle the same. Steels in this condition, with no further heat treatment, are designated as non-embrittled. The above quenching and tempering cycle for the 0.40 pct C steels resulted in as-quenched hardnesses of 48 to 53 RC and as-tempered hardnesses of 24 to 31 Rc except in the case of the plain nickel or plain carbon steels. In these, the as-tempered hardness was as low as 80 to 90 Rg. No attempt was made to adjust the tempering temperature to obtain the same hardness in ali steels since it was felt that a uniform thermal cycle was more important than exactly equivalent hardness values. The first edition of this book appeared in 1877 and approximately twenty years later (1898) the second and revised edition was published. Now, again after more than twenty years, comes the third edition. The changes involved in the present edition are chiefly those of addition, the general character and form of the book having been retained unchanged. In the section on Crystallography the important change consists in the introduction of the methods employed in the use of the stereographic and gnomonic pro¬jections. A considerable portion of the section on the Optical Characters of Minerals has been rewritten in the endeavor to make this portion of the book simpler and more readily understood by the student. In the section on Descriptive Mineralogy all species described since the previous edition have been briefly mentioned in their proper places. Numerous other changes and corrections have, of course, been made in order to embody the results of mineral investigation during the last two decades. Only minor changes have been made in the order of classification of the mineral species. It was felt that as this book is so closely related to the System of Mineralogy it was unwise to attempt any revision of the chemical classification until a new edition of that work should appear. The description of the methods of Crystal Drawing given in Appendix A has been largely rewritten. A new table has been added to Appendix B in which the minerals have been grouped into lists according to their important basic elements. Throughout the book the endeavor has been to present in a clear and concise way all the information needed by the elementary and advanced student of the science. The editor of this edition is indebted especially to the published and un¬published writings of the late Professor Samuel L. Penfield for much ma¬terial and many figures that have been used in the sections of Crystallog¬raphy and The Optical Character of Minerals. He also acknowledges the cordial support and constant assistance given him by Professor Edward S. Dana.

0PINION was general that this year's meeting of the Institute of Metals Division was one of the best in its history. In addition to its full and exceptionally fine program of professional papers, there were several other features of general interest-an in-spiring annual lecture by Dr. Cecil H. Desch which appears in abstract elsewhere in this issue, Mr. Sing-master's talk on the zinc industry at the annual dinner, and the presentation of the James Douglas Medal to one of the members of the Division, Dr. Zay Jeffries. Four technical sessions of the Division were held, dealing respectively with zinc, copper, aluminum, and general metallography, and in addition there was a joint session with the Non-ferrous Metallurgical Committee of the Institute. All of the papers presented were at-tended with much interest and followed by considerable discussion. The papers on plastic deformation of zinc by Messrs. Mathewson and Phillips, Romig, and Hoyt were of particular interest and awakened an extended discus-sion. They well illustrated the progress which is being -made today in the understanding of the mechanism of flow of metals, and the ingenuity of the authors in their crystallographic method of attack of this difficult problem was quite generally admired. A very old subject was treated in a modern way by Messrs. Corson and Bain in two papers on the harden-ing of copper and copper alloys. There has always existed a myth that the ancient Egyptians were masters of an art not possessed by ourselves; viz., that of hard-ening copper. This myth must have been quite defi-nitely dispelled in the minds of all those who listened to this admirable paper. Mr. Corson has applied the modern art of precipitation hardening to this old prob-lem with substantial success, employing small amounts of chromium, nickel, silicon, and cobalt for this purpose. The commercial application of these very important .developments of Mr. Corson is being actively investi-gated at the present time.

PRACTICALLY all explosives may be classified as those that burn and those that detonate. Explosives of the first class include .black blasting and smokeless powder and are broadly known as low explosives, or propellants, because they merely burn and do that comparatively slowly. Their action is as if some power behind the projectile or other material were exerting a shoving or pushing action. The high, or detonating, explosives produce a smashing or shattering effect upon the material. In using military- explosives of the propellant class, the breach of the gun, or cannon, is proportioned to hold the pressure, so that the projectile will be blown out. Exactly the reverse is true in commercial work; then it is the "breach" or the hole that is to be broken. The projectile and the explosive are therefore chosen that will rupture the largest "breach" possible. With the high explosives, it is easy to break out the breach (that is why they are of no value as military propellants)" but with some of the low explosives it is necessary to plug up the muzzle very carefully before shooting. Doubtless the use of incendiary mixtures of oxidizing and combustible materials led, in the 13th century, to the perfection of the mixture which is practically the same as our commercial black blasting powder of today. About 600 years later, nitroglycerine was discovered, but for years its great potential energy could not be used because, in its liquid state, it could not be safely handled or transported. The accidental discovery that kieselguhr would absorb, and hold fairly well, three times its own weight of nitroglycerine, however, made it available. "Guhr dynamite," as the combination nitroglycerine and kieselguhr was termed, was soon displaced by dynamites having an active base, such as wood pulp and other carbonaceous combustible materials. These do all that kieselguhr will do and, in addition, increase the chemical reaction and add materially to the effectiveness of the blast.

During 1932 the oil industry persistently endeavored to maintain a rate of production that would permit a profitable price structure. Much effort was concentrated on curtailment of both production and drilling. The tendency in curtailment was to shut in reserves where closely held and not subjected to drainage, and to allow town-lot fields such as Long Beach, Santa Fe Springs, Playa Del Rey and Huntington Beach a greater percentage of allotment. Marginal wells were given special consideration; only a small percentage of curtailment wag required, making their operations profitable. Naturally the decline in production of town-lot fields, under slight curtailment, is very rapid, hence production that is restricted in fields controlled by major interests at the present time will profit considerably in the future, as California reserves do not appear adequate to sustain heavy withdrawals over a long period of time. California production during 1932 was much greater than additions to reserves during the year. The state produced 10,701,238 bbl. of crude oil less in 1932 than in 1931, while total stocks (all petroleum commodities) decreased 1,589,524 bbl. Had all operators kept strictly within their allotted 'production, the total crude production decline would have been approximately 20,000,000 bbl. and total stock decrease 3,000,000 barrels. Estimated proven oil reserves for California were 3,965,000,000 bbl. on Jan. 1, 1932, as compared with 3,784,120,000 bbl. as of Jan. 1, 1933, a decrease of 180,880,000 barrels. Approximately 85 per cent of the 178,127,794 bbl. of oil produced during 1932 was withdrawn from old reserves in settled fields and the remaining 15 per cent from new sources such as Kettleman Hills North Dome, Belridge, San Miguelito and Dominguez deep zone. The oil reserves of Kettleman Hills North Dome are estimated to be approximately 50 per cent of the total oil reserves, of California and they may be drawn upon at a much greater rate than the remainder of the state's oil fields.

Anna, Ohio, at the junction of Cincinnati, Findlay and Kankakee arches, has been the site of repeated and sometimes damaging earthquakes. As part of a seismicity investigation near-surface (0.15-1 m depth) overcoring strain measurements were conducted in four limestone and dolomite quarries surrounding Anna, the results of which suggest a complicated regional stress pattern, with changes in the maximum horizontal stress direction from N45ºE to N15ºW. Since such abrupt stress fluctuations are rather atypical in the Midwest and since the reliability of near-surface tests in defining regional stress had not been established, we decided to remeasure the stresses at the same locations but at greater depths (0-200 m) using the hydrofracturing method. Owing to the weak horizontal bedding planes of the Silurian shaly limestones and shaly dolomites and the relatively shallow depths, many of the tests yielded horizontal fractures, providing information only on the vertical principal stress (-0.029 MPa/m depth). However, sufficient tests in each of three testholes resulted in vertical hydrofractures to enable the calculation of all three principal stresses. Within 50-170 m depth the horizontal stresses in all three quarries appear to belong to a uniform regional Stress field defined by the following relations: [']Hmin = 5.1 + 0.014 D; [0] Hmax = 10.1 + 0.014 D, where D is depth in meters. The direction of [O]Hmax within 50-170 m depth is uniform at N70°E (±15º). The hydro- fracturing results obtained at Anna, Ohio are in agreement with the prevailing stress regime in the midcontinent both with respect to magnitudes and directions. The results suggest a possible thrust mechanism for a proposed NW-SE fault along which most of the earthquake epicenters have been located, and a left lateral strike-slip at greater depths. Magnetic iron ore was mined in Essex County, N. Y., during the American Revolution; Benedict Arnold is said to have mined ore near Port Henry to secure iron for chains and spikes for the Lake Champlain fleet. Details regarding the operations prior to 1804 are not easily obtained but work on a commercial scale appears to have been started about 1838. The Witherbee, Sherman & Co. was established in 1849. The property of the district is held in fee almost entirely by the mining companies. The Mineville iron-ore district, as well as the entire Adirondack region, belongs to the pre-Cambrian complex. The readily identified rocks consist of gabbro, anorthosite, syenite, and granite, and are classed as igneous, eruptive, and intrusive. In addition, there is a great variety of gneisses, rocks with a variable mineral composition but all more or less distinctly foliated. The Grenville series are the oldest rocks in the district; this series consists of graphitic white limestones, graphitic sandstones, and quartzites and gneisses with or without graphite. The orebodies occur in the gneissic rocks and are comformable to the structure of the rocks. The typical occurrence of the ore in this district is in lenticular bodies with a parallel pitch to the southwest; this structure is best exemplified in the New Bed mine. The Harmony and Old Bed orebodies are faulted by two sets of diabase dikes, one set having a southwest strike and the other set an east-west strike. The ores occurring in the acid gneissic rocks are non-titaniferous. The ores occurring in the gabbros and anorthosites are high in titanium; these deposits are irregular, have no structural relation with one another, and are unquestionably of igneous origin. The origin of the gneissic rocks and the ores therein contained is not settled; both the sedimentary theory of ore concentration and the igneous theory of magmatic segregation have been advanced. THE over-all picture of safety in mining has been encouraging during the past few years, and in mining activities as a whole the trend in accident occurrence is downward. This is the more noteworthy when the type of labor used in mines during the war period is taken into consideration. The drafting of young mining employees into the armed services and the departure of others for work in other war industries took a heavy toll of young, husky, active men. Their places were taken in large part by older men who returned to the mines, or by inexperienced men with little if any knowledge of mining. Despite the lack of labor and especially of skilled labor, and the difficulty of obtaining new equipment as well as maintaining and replacing worn or broken equipment, and numerous other difficulties the mining industry not only reached and maintained maximum production but made the increase with little if any sacrifice of safety. DIFFUSION coefficients of Hf181 in the high-tem-perature bcc phase of reactor-grade hafnium were determined at temperatures of 1795° to 1995°C by standard lathe-sectioning techniques. The temperature dependence of the data may be described by an Arrhenius-type expression for this limited temperature interval. However, hafnium is classed with the "anomalous" bcc metals zirconium, titanium, and y uranium by the low values of Do and Q observed in this study. The hafnium metal was received as 1/2-in.-diameter crystal bar. Analyses by the Analytical Chemistry Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory showed the major impurity to be zirconium— about 2.1 pct. The total interstitial content was about 225 ppm with 190 ppm of this oxygen. The Hf"' was supplied as HfC12 in HC1 solution by the Isotopes Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The hafnium bar was cut into disk-shaped specimens 3/8 in. long. One of the flat faces of each specimen was metallographically treated and then the isotope was deposited by vacuum evaporation from a tungsten filament. A 3 by 3 in. NaI (Tl) crystal with a single-channel analyzer was used for counting y rays with energies of 0.3 to 0.7 Mev. The as-deposited layers of isotope had counting rates of about 200 counts per sec. Specimens were annealed in argon in a tantalum resistance furnace. Temperatures were measured with a microoptical pyrometer calibrated for the particular furnace sighting conditions. All sectioning was done by standard lathe techniques. Section weights were determined on a semimicrobalance. A density of 12.5 g per cu cm was used in determinations of section thicknesses. Activities associated with the various sections were measured and the penetration data were treated using the computer code by winslow.' In all cases, except for specimens annealed at temperatures below 1795°C, normal Gaussian penetration behavior resulted. DETAILED knowledge of purchase specifications established by coal consumers is essential to the successful design and operation of a coal-preparation plant. ANTHRACITE Specifications should be considered by both the consumer and the producer as guide posts outlining a certain path for both to follow. Plants differ, therefore specifications must differ to meet the varied requirements. Specifications are not of themselves a "cure all" or an assurance of complete satisfaction in fuel utilization. Specifications should not be regarded as a license to engage in an orgy of buying any and all coals that may happen to fall within their limits. This would lead to the-indiscriminate mixing of coals which may vary in their burning characteristics. Different coals of equal grade tend to be individualistic in their burning characteristics. Rather, specifications should be used to help simplify coal selection, to reduce the actual number of coals used over a given period; in other words, to have a stabilizing influence on coal or customer turnover. In the final analysis, the use of too many coals per year in a plant is costly to both the consumer and the producer. Too many sources usually result in higher operating and maintenance costs for the consumer and higher sales costs for the producer. Finally, the statement included in the report accompanying the comprehensive Coal Selection Charts prepared by the Coal Committee of the National Association of Purchasing Agents, and released in 1938, is significant. This Committee worked diligently for a period of 15 years seeking to find a scientific and reliable method for selecting coals. The two following paragraphs are quoted from its report: More important is the fact that no ready-made classification or set of specifications can possibly replace the judgment and resourcefulness of an experienced combustion engineer, or fuel technologist, nor the usual need for full scale plant tests under the exact conditions of use before a final decision is made . . .

The sampling of disseminated copper deposits has been describeu often but the method of combining assays to give the true shape and value of the orebody as it will be mined has received less attention. As the ore mined during five or ten years at several of the great disseminated properties has averaged materially lower in grade than the published estimates, the question of the sampling and estimating of these orebodies seems timely. In this paper, attention is given particularly to factors that may cause errors in the final estimate. Sampling of diamond-drill holes, churn-drill holes, and underground workings is briefly described in the first part of the paper; then the method of combining assays to give the average grade and tonnage that will be mined is taken up in some detail. The necessity of study of the geology of the deposit and of probable costs is emphasized. Finally, the methods of calculating tonnages are outlined. DlAMOND-DRILL SAMPLING There are three main requisites for accurate diamond-drill sampling. First, the core should be removed and the hole cleaned out at the beginning of every sampling interval, usually 5 ft. (1.5 m.). After the rods are let down, water should be run through them until it becomes clear. The water must be clear before drilling starts. 'In this way the material knocked down from the sides of the hole by the descending rods is washed away, instead of being left to salt the sludge sample. The second requisite is to save all the sludge and all the core from every sampling interval. Where the material is uniformly heavy, the cuttings will settle suffciently in a box, through which the sludge flows s1owly.l Where part of the material is too light to settle readily, the sludge should be run into barrels, and allowed to settle until the water becomes clear. Then the clear water is siphoned off, and the sludge evaporated to dryness over a slow fire, sacked, and assayed.2 To obtain

THE Province of Ontario in recent years has come strongly to the front as a producer of metals, especially nickel, copper, silver, and now gold. Of the last named, the output for 1922 was in the neighborhood of $20,000,000. The law governing the mining industry in a community where such develop-ments are taking place will be of interest, therefore, in other places where mining laws are up for revision The first mining of importance done in this province was for copper on the north shore of Lake Huron, where the Bruce mines were opened in 1846. These deposits of copper sulfides, notwithstanding the remoteness from markets and the cost of transportation, were vigorously worked for 12 or 15 years and also intermittently later, but the active career of the mines came to an end in 1875. From first to last, a little less than 10,000 tons of copper was produced, valued at $3,300,000. All the product was shipped to England as dressed ore, contain-ing up to 13 per cent. of the metal. In. 1866, a rich pocket of gold was found on the Richardson farm near Madoc, Hastings County, but was not followed by further discoveries of a like kind and in time the excitement it caused died away. Rich silver ore was found in 1868 on Silver Islet in Lake Superior, a speck of land not larger than a good-sized ball-room. The assemblage of minerals here was practically the same as that at Cobalt, discovered 35 years later, namely, native silver, cobalt, nickel and arsenic; in addition, there was considerable argentite, which has always been scarce at Cobalt. In all, the silver produced amounted to about $3,500,000. The belief persisted that the deposit was not mined out, and in the summer of 1922, some rich ore was extracted from the roof, perilously near the bottom of Lake Superior.

A distinguished engineer, the active head of a large mining company, has said that surveying attains the dignity of a profession only in the hands of a few men—the few who know how to keep notes that will be understood by even a novice without further word of explanation. Of all mine-records, survey notes are perhaps the most important. The maps made from them serve as a working-guide, and as framework for other data; and when, from any cause, access to underground workings is shut off, the surveyor's record often becomes invaluable. So seldom docs a surveyor have a chance to check underground surveys by making a closure, that he is compelled to rely on the precision of each step of his work for the accuracy of the final result. When data are fully recorded on the spot, the notes, even in the hands of second parties, become evidence of the care and precision with which the surveying was done. It is worth a great deal to be able to pick up the work of a former surveyor where it was left off, and to be able to carry it forward without rctracing from the beginning. The purpose of this paper is to describe the survey-note system of a mine now under my direction, in which underground surveys had to be relied upon entirely for the proper division of rich ore-bodies between neighbors, thereby placing a premium on accurate surveying and permanent records. In survey-work, it soon turns out that paper is the least item of expense, and that little is gained by trying to economize note-book space. For many purposes it is best to record notes on cards or loose-leaves, which may be left in the office at the end of the day's work, and need not be carried into the mine again, there to become smeared with grime and grease. The year 1935 was mostly quiet in West Virginia, and devoted to routine drilling in old pools and extensions. A notable exception to this general rule, however, was the further development and proving of a field of gas discovered in 1930 in the deep Oriskany sand (L. Dev.) in Kanawha County, as later discussed. No new pools of oil were found and little or no attempt was made to search for them. No new pools of gas were recorded but various extensions of old pools were made. There were no new pipe line extensions of consequence, either for oil or gas. Operating technology was much the same as in recent years, there having been some further advances in repressuring oil wells and in the use of acid for treating small wells in calcareous formations, and some change in the technique of shooting gas wells. Financially, there has been a full market for all crude oil produced and a fair market for gas. There have been occasional transfers of producing oil or gas properties, mainly between established companies. Most of the attempts made to finance mergers and new developments have failed largely because of difficulties encountered under the Federal securities act. This situation has prevented the normal turnover of properties by small operators who frequently desire to sell partly developed interests and then step out into new ventures. New Development In 1935 the State issued 569 permits for drilling and records the same number of completions. One trade journal records 533 completions and another 483. A running record kept by the writer accounts for 713 completions, with 156 oil wells, 417 gas wells and 140 dry holes (Table 3). Some of these completions may be old wells drilled to deeper sands. Some, apparently, have been drilled without legal permit. Extensions of Producing Areas Ritchie County has again led all others in new drilling, with 137 completions as compared to 74 in Calhoun and 61 in Cabell. EHRENBERG was the first to publish and direct attention to the peculiarities of the diatomaceous deposit of Richmond; but how and by whom he was supplied with the material for his microscopical investigations, is not generally known; but we may presume W. B. Rogers, formerly State Geologist of Virginia, furnished the material, and may have given the geological position or horizon. O£ these facts we have no available evidence, nor have we any estimate of the thickness of this stratum of diatomaceous or infusorial earth. At the request of a member of this Institute, I have investigated the subject, and offer the following facts as the result, derived principally from information supplied by Mr. John Ott, of the Southern Fertilizing Company, Dr. William Taylor, State Chemist, C. Peticolas, microscopist, Captain Robert H. Temple, civil engineer, Major C. M. Bolton and Mr. C. M. Smith, civil engineers, and formerly engaged in constructing the tunnel under Church Hill, in Richmond. The city of Richmond is generally described as being built on seven hills. This is not the fact, geologically speaking. Originally, there was an immense plateau of land, about two hundred feet above tide, in which a deep excavation was made from the west to east by the James River cutting down to the granite. Opening southward and meeting the valley of the James are various ravines and gullies, in the principal of which are Shockoe and Gillies Creeks. The formation is tertiary, subdivided into all the classified divisions, but at the present moment no one has been found to make this section a special study. Rogers's early classifications and diagrams, with all their imperfections, are the only published records, and the printed editions are long since exhausted.
