The Brookhaven field is one of several Basal Tuscaloosa reservoirs located in south-central Mississippi. It is a standstone reservoir, of erratic deposition and with several faults, having an approximate subsea depth of 9,800 ft. A large variation in permeability exists with a weighted average being 256 md. Estimated average interstitial water saturation is 45 per cent. The undersaturated reservoir fluid exhibits marked differences in physical properties with measured saturation pressures ranging from 733 to 2,255 psi. Early rapid decline in reservoir pressure caused the operating interests to unitize the field and initiate a program of pressure maintenance by gas injection. At the time gas injection was commenced, the reservoir pressure had fallen to nearly half of the original pressure with only 4.5 Per cent of the original oil in place produced. The reservoir pressure has since been maintained at approximately 2,750 psig, and cumulative production to date is 17 per cent of original oil in place. An analysis of field performance during gas injection is presented in detail. The program of pressure maintenance by gas injection is considered to be a success, since the expected ultimate recovery has been increased and the current production rate is in excess of 2 per cent of original oil in place per year. Performance has been better, anticipated ultimate recovery is larger, and total production costs are lower than for a similar Basal Tuscaloosa reservoir nearby, even though that field appears to have a more effective natural water drive. INTRODUCTION The history of the Brookhaven Unit is a testimonial for unitization and for the application of engineering techniques in the operation of an oil field. The operating and royalty interests in this field have mutually benefited from their early recognition of the need for unitization and pressure maintenance and from the forthright manner in which these were accomplished. The tangible benefits accruing to the participants in the Unit are: (1) income from gasoline plant products, (2) reduced lifting and operating costs from those of competitive operation, (3) maintenance of high levels of current income by mitigation of the inevitable decline in production rates inherent to natural depletion, (4) an increase in ultimate recovery of about 40 per cent over natural depletion operations. This paper should properly be considered a progress report; however, the performance of the field after five years of pressure maintenance clearly indicates that the ultimate success of the project is assured. FERRITES are sintered metallic oxides of the spinel structure type1 and belong to the class of soft ferromagnetic materials. Similar to a ceramic, they can be formed and fired to a dense body, exhibiting a high electrical volume resistivity ranging from 102to 107 ohm-cm as compared with 10-6 ohm-cm for some of the metallic magnetic materials. This high resistivity, with resulting low eddy current losses, finds special application at high frequencies. The dispersive susceptibility of ferrites at microwave frequencies has also led to many applications in this field. Ferrites are used in low frequency applications where high resistivity with high permeability is desirable. During the last few years ferrites exhibiting rectangular hysteresis loops have been developed for computer and magnetic memory systems. The general formula for ferrites is MeFe2O4 where Me is a divalent metal ion such as Ni, Zn, Mg, Mn, Cu, Cd, and Fe. Only two of these ferrites are nonferromagnetic, namely, those with Zn and Cd. Solid solutions can be formed between different ferrites, and it is of interest to note that solid solutions of a ferromagnetic ferrite with a nonferromagnetic ferrite yield much better magnetic materials than the basic ferrite body. In general, it can be said that the solid solution formation between ferrites has widened the field of ferrite synthesis and has led to methods of preparing materials with a large variety of magnetic properties. During the last two decades the synthesis of ferromagnetic oxides has been the object of extensive research, but commercial production has been started only within the last ten years. Along with more fundamental studies, there remains the never- ending task of developing ways to realize the optimum characteristics of materials in large-scale production. Ordinarily, to produce a ferrite material it is necessary for the constituent oxides to be mixed intimately, pressed, and then fired at temperatures above 1000°C. Ferrite Synthesis: Formation of a basic ferrite by solid state reaction from Fe2O3 and a monoxide such as NiO, under normal atmospheric conditions, is governed by a progressive diffusion of cations between adjacent particles of the constituents. Firing temperature, furnace atmosphere, and cooling can vary the magnetic properties, however. If, for example, a dioxide, a sesquioxide, or an oxide of the Me3O4 type is substituted for the monoxide, the reaction mechanism becomes more complex and extremely dependent on atmospheric conditions and firing cycles. DURING the past year and a half, the Territorial Department of Mines in Alaska has conducted a modest experimental program for the purpose of determining the extent to which magnetic and resistivity methods can be used in interior Alaska in connection with prospecting, mining and geological studies. Since little information is available concerning previous work,1,2 and since conditions differ considerably from those in most other regions, it was considered advisable to make a general study of the possibilities and limitations of the two methods, rather than a detailed study of any single problem. PROBLEMS One of the most serious handicaps to prospecting and geological study in interior Alaska, especially in the mature regions, is a cover of unconsolidated deposits ranging in thickness from a few feet to several hundred feet. These deposits, some of which are permanently frozen, consist of silt with varying proportions of vegetation and windblown material in the valleys and of residual deposits on the hills.3,4 The problems treated here are caused by the existence of this overburden: I. Location of buried placers. 2. Determination of depth and areal distribution of permanently frozen and of thawed unconsolidated deposits. 3. Location of water-bearing beds under unconsolidated deposits. INSTRUMENTS AND METHODS Magnetic and direct-current resistivity methods were used because they are relatively simple, rapid and inexpensive and because generally they are well suited to the study of the problems indicated. The instruments used were a vertical Schmidt-type magnetometer and a direct-current resistivity instrument similar to those used by the Geophysical Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey.5 For placer surveys with the magnetometer, a sensitivity of about 25 gammas per scale division was found suitable. For resistivity studies of frozen and thawed overburden and of underground water, the Lee partitioning method6 was found to be most generally suitable. In the Lee method a central potential electrode is placed midway between the two potential electrodes of the Wenner four-electrode configuration.7 Nonpolarizable electrodes were made from unglazed porcelain pots about 10 cm. high and 5 cm. in diameter. In order to retard evaporation of the electrolyte the sides of the pots were glazed, inside and out, with clear Duco lacquer. For resistivity work in cold weather, a nonfreezing electrolyte consisting of equal parts of ethylene glycol and a saturated water solution of copper sulphate proved satisfactory. Stainless steel rods of 3/4-in. diameter made excellent current electrodes because their bright finish enabled good ground contacts to be made.

The resin-in-pulp (RIP) ion exchange process was originally conceived by the Atomic Energy Commission in the early 1950's. However it was developed to commercial success by the Anaconda Co. at its 3000-tpd ore processing mill in Grants, N. M. Essentially, the Anaconda mill's crushing, grinding and acid leaching operations are the same as at the nearby Kerr-McGee mill, except that Anaconda uses manganese dioxide instead of sodium chlorate as oxidant during acid leaching. The real differences between the two mills become evident when considering how Anaconda treats its leached materials.

MEMBERS of the Research Committee lunched to-gether on Monday and discussed the work and plans of the Committee. Some re-assignment of duties was made and a request put in for another member specializing in lead and zinc. By request, Director Flinn of the Engineering Foundation presented the problem of the proposed investigation of iron alloys. It was decided to call together a special committee in May to determine on recommendations. A. C. Fieldner discussed coal research and Chairman Manning was authorized to ascertain by letter ballot the opinions, on certain phases of this, of all members of the Committee.

WHEN the atomic age broke suddenly upon the world in 1945 with all its terrible implications, predictions concerning the future of atomic energy were as numerous as columnists and often inflated. Today, some seven years since the explosion and probably ten since the Government took over development of nuclear energy, the impact on our way of living has been largely political (except of course for the thousands of people who have become employed in the AEC). Considering the world situation, weapons have come first naturally. But credible progress in the plow-share uses of nuclear energy-medicine, agriculture, power-can also be noted.

In gassy coal mines, abandoned worked-out areas are natural reservoirs that may contain air- methane mixtures. The quantity of such mixtures is continuously increasing or decreasing as atmospheric pressure falls or rises. This is in accordance with Boyle's Gas Law, which states that the volume of a perfect gas varies inversely with the absolute pressure. In large, open gob areas without a bleeder ventilation system, atmospheric pressure is a static force acting in all directions. Changes in atmospheric pressure may occur rapidly or slowly, but any change will result in a change in the quantity of gob air-methane mixtures.

A study conducted at The Ohio State University sought to deter- mine whether explosives break rock primarily employing shock energy or energy stored as borehole gas pressure. The amount of broken material, calculated borehole pressure, and measured stress waves are compared as decoupling ratios (borehole diameter/explosive charge diameter) increased from 1 to 3 and all other variables remained constant. Breakage and calculated borehole pressure displayed a decrease as the decoupling ratio increased while the shock energy remained constant. The strong implication is that borehole gas pressure is the primarary force in breaking rock with explosives.

A new technique-like most modern management tools-it still needs years of constructive research. Yet despite known imperfections, it is probably the most enthusiastically used tool of cost control developed in the last hundred years. Over 85 pct of all companies employing more than 100 workers in one of the major industrial areas use work measurement. For a good reason, however, this has not been true in the mining industry until very recently. The facts make an interesting story.

ANALYSIS of the chemical and structural differences in minerals often results in a better understanding of the differences in the geological conditions under which they were formed. The minerals in the kaolinite group differ in the amount of interlayer water and in the nature and amount of ordered and/or random shifting of each 1:1 layer with respect to those above and below it. This paper is a progress report resulting from research on the morphology, structure, and origin of fine-grained minerals, supported by Contract N6onr26914 with the Geophysics Branch of the Office of Naval Research. The purpose of the paper is to present data obtained in the laboratories at The Pennsylvania State College and elsewhere, which reveal some of the details of structure of the minerals in the kaolinite group, and to suggest a number of interpretations that bear upon the conditions of origin of these minerals. Be¬cause most of the work in this investigation thus far has been concerned with the relationships of kaolinite, halloysite (4H2O; endellite), and halloysite (2H2O), must of the discussion deals with these members of the group. The first step in the analysis of the differences in two sets of geological conditions is an evaluation of the differences in the minerals that result. Thus the chemical differences between the montmorillonite and the kaolinite clays corroborate other evidence in support of the view that the montmorillonites are commonly formed when solutions are alkaline and leaching poor, while kaolinite usually is associated with acid solutions and good drainage condi¬tions. It is obvious that the greater the differences in the minerals, the more divergent may be the conditions that give rise to them and the more readily one condition can be distinguished from the other. In the kaolinite group, differences between individual members are small, therefore the differences in condition of origin are presumably subtle and difficult to define. At the same time, the very fact that the minerals differ only slightly makes them more sensitive indicators of the exact conditions under which they and the minerals associated with them were formed. Since clay minerals are being used more and more to evaluate the nature, value, and mode of formation of economic mineral deposits, an attempt to define these subtle differences would appear worth while. THERE has been some discussion among blast-furnace operators regarding the relative merits of tuyeres of the converging type and tuyeres designed in an attempt to produce a diverging jet of air. An article1 on Progress in German Blast Furnace Practice indicates the interest in this subject abroad. This article illustrates a diverging type of tuyere which is shown here in Fig. 1A. The design appears to be rather poor as regards known properties of air flow. The adoption of this. tuyere, the article states, resulted in a decrease of blast pressure of about 4 lb. per sq. in. and an increase of the output of the furnace. If the improvements mentioned are due entirely to the change in tuyere design, the subject of tuyere design seemed worthy of investigation and this paper is a report of such work. Because of the gain in efficiency brought about by the use of a diverging tuyere in the German plant, it was thought desirable to investigate the shape of the air streams issuing from various-types of tuyeres to ascertain whether the gain was due to the tuyere itself or to the distribution of the air in the furnace. Since it is difficult to do experimental work on a full-sized furnace, or even on full-sized tuyeres, and because of the equipment available for the work, it was decided to carry out the work on scale models of tuyeres. Therefore, in this work, single tuyeres were used and the blast discharged into the atmosphere. The shape of the air stream was determined by means of a Pitot tube suitably supported in the air stream at various positions. The air was. furnished by a Roots blower driven by a 10-hp. direct-current motor having field control, and capable of discharging 250 cu. ft. per min. with a pressure on the discharge of 4 in. of mercury. A modern blast furnace with 21-ft. hearth requires about 50,000 cu. ft. per min. of free air at from 16 to 23 lb. per sq. in. pressure, depending upon the type of burden. This pressure is the total pressure required to force the air through the burden and through the tuyeres. Upon computation the pressure drop through the tuyeres is about 1 to 2 lb. per sq. in. The yttl-irtm-nickel system has been investigated by metallo-graphic, thermal ard X-ray methods. There are nine intermetal-lic compounds present: Y3Ni, Y3Ni,, YNi,, YNi,, Y,Ni,, YNi,, and Y,Nil, which rodergo peritectic decomposition and YNi and YNi, which melt congruently. There are eutectics at 34.8, 57.5 and 93.3 at pct Ni which melt at 805°, 950 and 1285 C, respectively. Crystallographic data are given for YNi, YNi,, YNi,, YNi5and Y,Ni,. The terminal solid solubility is low. In recent work by Fisher and Fullhart' in which yttrium crucibles to be used for containers of uranium-chromium eutectic were clad with a high nickel steel, a low melting phase formed where the yttrium was in contact with the steel. To investigate the cause of this phenomenon, Daane, et al. made a survey study of yttrium systems with chromium, manganese, iron, and nickel and found an 18 wt pct Ni (weight percent) alloy to melt at approximately 950°C. voge13 in a study of the systems of cerium, lanthanum, and praseodymium with nickel found six compounds of the same formula in each system, i.e., R3Ni, RNi, RNiz, RNi3, RNi4, and RNi5. Since there is a great similarity between yttrium and the rare earths, compound formation was likely to occur also in the yttrium-nickel system. voge13 observed that the ability of transition metals to form compounds with the rare earths diminishes in the order nickel, cobalt, and iron while no compounds are formed with manganese, chromium, and titanium. Available data on yttrium systems with these elements indicate similar behavior, except that a slightly greater tendency toward compound formation is apparent. Simple eutectics with limited solid solubility have been found in the yttrium-titanium4 and yttrium-chromium5 systems, but at least one compound is present in the yttrium-manganese system.' In the case of yttrium-iron, at least three compounds are present,5 while only two are present in the cerium-iron,' and no compounds are present in the lanthanum-iron5 system. On the basis of both the trend in the alloying behavior of yttrium and rare-earth metals with the first transition series metals and the large number of compounds in the cerium-nickel system, one might expect six or more compounds to form in the nickel-yttrium system. A consideration of Hume-Rothery's rules of alloying based on size factor, electronegati-vity, and valence predicted low terminal solid solubility and possible compound formation. Activity data of carbon as a function of both temperature and composition throughout the stable austenite range is correlated by mearts of an equation derived from a quasi-chemical model. The carbon activity data of austmite for temperatures between 800° and 1200°C are utilized in conjunction with the activity of carbon calculated for the y solidus using the activity of carbon in liquid iron and published austenite-liquid equilibria. The results agree very well with Chip-man's correlation; however, a small difference in the activity of carbon in the high-temperature range of the austenite field is evident. Excellent agreement is found for the heat of solution of graphite in infinitely dilute austenite; from this study the value is 10,550 cal as compared with Chipman's value of 10,680 cal. AS part of a program to study microsegregation in dendritic solidification of ternary Fe-C-Cr alloys, it was desirable to be able to describe the equilibria between austenite and liquid iron in Fe-C-Cr alloys. In this regard, it was necessary to correlate existing data on the activity of carbon in Fe-C austenite as a function of both temperature and composition. At that time, Chipman's analysis1 of the thermodynamics of binary Fe-C austenite was not available. It will be shown that this study and Chipman's study agree rather well throughout the stable austenite range of temperature and composition; however, some small differences appear at temperatures greater than the eutectic temperature. Benz and Elliott 2 presented isoactivity lines for austenite superimposed on their revised Fe-C phase diagram. Using an expression from Darken and Gury 3 representing Smith's4 activity data between 800" and 1000°C, they found that the activities extrapolated above 1000°C to the solidus did not agree with the activities determined from the corresponding liquidus compositions. It is the purpose of the following argument to reconcile carbon activity data of austenite with the activity in liquid Fe-C alloys as determined by Rist and Chipman. 5 In addition, a simple analytical expression is sought for computational convenience. ACTIVITY DATA OF CARBON IN ZRON Fig. 1 shows the activity of carbon in Fe-C austenite as determined by Smith, 4 Schenck and Kaiser, 6 Scheil et a1.,7 and Bungardt et al.' The lines are merely drawn to separate the data into the respective isotherms. These data are inadequate to determine the activity of carbon at temperatures greater than 1200°C. INTRODUCTION The El Teniente Mine of Codelco-Chi le has extracted 588 mil lion tons of ore in its 77 year history for a total copper output of 8.800.000 tons. The mine production has been obtained mainly by traditional block-caving where grizzlemen using a hand held lever send ore through long-raises to load trains. At present the mine is about to introduce mechanized block-caving using LHD equipment to extract the primary rock. This paper describes this method which will be tested starting next month by caving an 11.000 square meter block. THE PRIMARY ROCK PROBLEM The secondary enrichment sulfides of the El Teniente ore body have characteristics which makes a standard unmechanized block-caving practice very successful. In the 60's parts of blocks encountered primary ow in the Teniente 1 and Sub-13 levels which proved to be extremely hard to extract. These foretold the obstacles that arised in the central part of the Teniente 4 level. Preparation of a completely primary 8.100 square meter block started in 1970. Its undercutting was completed by the end of 1972 and by 1973 the problem of mining the primary rock was clearly visualized. The numbers below describe the difficulties in mining this block: -Long-hole drilling rate is 90 m (270 ft) per shift in secondary rock and 37 m (110 ft) in primary. - Undercutting which is completed in 9 shifts in secondary took 180 shifts in the primary block. - Average grizzlymen productivity in secondary is 250 tons per shift while in primary it is only 25-30 tons, both at 343 mm (13 1/2 in. ) grizzly opening. - Powder consumption for secondary blasting increased from 8 grams per ton in secondary to 84 in primary. - The protection pillar between the under- cutting and the production levels was 60% broken in primary while 20% is usual for secondary. - Extraction advanced 5 cm per day in primary while a 50 cm per day rate is the aver- age in secondary. This is the main reason that after 8 years this primary block has a 20% extraction. Secondary blocks take 1.5 to 3 years to complete their extraction. - 80% of the boulders in primary rock are larger than 343 m (13 1/2 in.) with 10-20 % of them larger than 3 meters. -Direct cost of production (preparation, undercutting, extraction and haulage), using the traditional block-caving design for secondary rock, increased 3.5 to 4 times when used in primary rock. There has been some discussion among blast-furnace operators regarding the relative merits of tuyeres of the converging type and tuyeres designed in an attempt to produce a diverging jet of air. An article1 on Progress in German Blast Furnace Practice indicates the interest in this subject abroad. This article illustrates a diverging type of tuyere which is shown here in Fig. 1A. The design appears to be rather poor as regards known properties of air flow. The adoption of this tuyere, the arlicle states, resulted in a decrease of blast pressure of about 4 Ib. per sq. in. and an increase of the output of the furnace. If the improvements mentioned are due entirely to the change in tuyere design, the subject of tuyere design seemed worthy of investigation and this paper is a report of such work. Because of the gain in efficiency brought about by the use of a diverging tuyere in the German plant, it was thought desirable to investigate the shape of the air streams issuing from various types of tuyeres to ascertain whether the gain was due to the tuyere itself or to the distribution of the air in the furnace. Since it is difficult to do experimental work on a full-sized furnace, or even on full-sized tuyeres, and because of the equipment available for the work, it was decided to carry out the work on scale models of tuyeres. Therefore, in this work, single tuyeres were used and the blast discharged into the atmosphere. The shape of the air stream was determined by means of a Pitot tube suitably supported in the air stream at various positions. The air was furnished by a Roots blower driven by a 10-hp. direct-current motor having field control, and capable of discharging 250 cu. ft. per min. with a pressure on the discharge of 4 in. of mercury. A modern blast furnace with 21-ft. hearth requires about 50,000 cu. ft. per min. of free air at from 16 to 23 Ib. per sq. in. pressure, depending upon the type of burden. This pressure is the total pressure required to force the air through the burden and through the tuyeres. Upon computation the pressure drop through the tuyeres is about 1 to 2 lb. per sq. in.
