What has been billed as the underground drilling technology of the 1980's got a dramatic head start when Boliden engineers at Stekenjokk decided to go with all hydraulic drilling for primary ore production and mine development. This application represents a major first in meeting the needs of high productivity, better energy utilization, and an improved drilling environment. At Stekenjokk, engineers chose three Atlas Copco Boomer H132 two-boom electro-hydraulic drill rigs with the COP 1038 rock drills. An additional single-boom Boomer H131 was also selected with the COP 1038 HD for roof bolting functions.

Inflation, fuel shortages, environmental restrictions, and a worldwide recession that sharply curtailed the demand for goods and services, were the main causes for the poor performance & virtually all industrial minerals in 1975. This poor showing was not a surprise. As Felix Shay correctly predicted in his introductory remarks to last year's industrial Minerals Review (ME, Feb. 1975, p. 70), ". . . the minerals industry will soon be facing falling demand as a consequence of sharp declines in auto production, housing, appliances, and other consumer goods. THE Presidio mine of The American Metal Co. is situated in the "Big Bend" region, some 45 miles over state highway south of Marfa, a station on the Southern Pacific R.R. It lies 20 miles by road north of the Mexican border, in semidesert surroundings typical of this general section of the United States and the adjoining part of Mexico. All supplies are hauled in by truck from Marfa under contract. The concentrates and precipitates produced by the mill are carried by the same trucks to Marfa, from whence they are shipped, respectively, to the El Paso and Selby plants.

All mining and milling complexes can, within limits, operate at a variety of production rates. Factors of economic importance that are affected by production rates are costs per unit production, recovery, and product grade. Once the relationship between the production rate and cost is established, dynamic-programming techniques can define the optimum production schedule (i.e., the production schedule that maximizes the present worth of the operation) for the life of the deposit. In general, the optimum production rate is not constant for the life of the deposit, but declines gradually as the deposit is being exhausted.

The recently completed liquid sulfur dioxide plant at American Smelting and Refining Co.'s Tacoma copper smelter in Washington last April is one step by the firm to meet ambient air quality standards in the vicinities of its three US copper smelters. At a capital cost of $18.5 million, the liquid SO2 plant will work together with an existing sulfuric acid plant to treat all gases generated by the copper converters. Designed to handle up to 45,000 cfm of converter gas utilizing the Dimethylaniline (DMA) process, this plant is expected to recover about 51% of the total smelter input.

Simulation as a mathematical technique is not new. However, recent increases in digital computer speeds and the ease of programming with languages such as Fortran have centered a good deal of attention around simulation in the last few years. By ignoring all but the relevant characteristics of a process, a mathematical simulator may be constructed which, when fed operating data, should react as the process would. The output becomes numbers, instead of tons, however. Thus, a trial-and-error operation of such a simulator will permit management to study a major system change at little cost.

A statistically designed, experimental study showed how gangue minerals, flux additions, fineness of grind, firing temperature, and time affect the properties of acid pellets made from a Western Australian hematite ore. Alumina has less effect than silica and lime, but interactions between the six variables occur, which influence abrasion index, reducibility, and cold compression strength. Finer grinding has little influence on reducibility but improves the other two properties. The major variable is firing temperature, which interacts with all other variables to affect pellet properties. Calculations based on the data show the implications for straight-grate pellet plants and optimum hood temperature ranges.

MANY requests for information as to the possibility of washing coals to some predetermined percentage of ash or sulfur have suggested that the producers aim to satisfy some degree of purity set by the user of the fuel, rather than to attain the greatest economic benefit to all concerned. This paper is written to show that the highest economic purity of washed coal can be determined from washability studies of the raw coal, costs of mining and washing coal, and data on the effect of ash and sulfur on the value of the coal for the particular use for which it is intended.

At the present time, the mine-owner has a number of patent crushers to choose from, when contemplating the erection of a mill; and a number of new ones are yearly brought to notice. We all know that the stamp-mill is the old standard; but several of the patent crushers, especially of the roller-type, are not without their merits. The Climax mine has a history of dealing with ground control problems caused by major stress concentrations in the orebody. These stress concentrations, called weight, can arise in a variety of ways. The general effects of depth, rock type, and mining method give rise to weight problems, but local geologic features and daily cave line management can have even greater effects. Over the years a number of techniques have been developed for identifying weight problems in advance and for cow with them. These techniques all help us to amid interrupting the pace of cave advance and minimize the loss of production.

THE anthracite coals of Pennsylvania are all mined from large veins. A seam less than four feet. in thickness is generally considered as unworkable, those from which most of the coal now comes being from 8 to 30 feet thick. Several months ago, some specimens of the minerals occurring at the Etta tin mine, Dakota, were received at the laboratory of the Cornell University. On examining the heavy brownish-black portion, which I presumed was the tin-stone, I was surprised to find only a faint indication of tin. Further investigation showed the mineral to be tantalite. On searching carefully all the fragments received, a considerable quantity of that mineral was found, and only a single streak of cassiterite, which was attached to a mass of spodumene. Adsorption of a nonionic polyacrylamide (PAM), an anionic polyacrylamide with sulfonate functional groups (PAMS), and a cationic polyacrylamide with amine functional groups (PAMD), on hematite was investigated as a function of different solution conditions. Adsorption results indicate that the major mechanisms of adsorption of polyacrylamides on hematite is through hydrogen bonding, with electrostatic forces playing a secondary role. All the polymers exhibited irreversibility of adsorption upon dilution. Also, entropic effects were determined to be important in adsorption. Surface chemical properties of hematite and solution chemistry of the polyacrylamides are considered to explain the polymer adsorption behavior on hematite.

The evolution of planning processes in the United States from the early 1900's is briefly examined. From one year operating budgets, planning processes have evolved into sophisticated analyses of alternative long-term future strategies and the management issues and practices which relate to their implementation. Increasing complexity within the business environment has led to numerous planning methodologies and extensive use of computers to analyze operating and financial information. All of these developments, however, have not supplanted the real need for decision-makers to continue to give important weight to the intuitive or soft data inputs into the planning process.

The minimum sulphur level which can be attained during fluid bed roasting of zinc sulfide concentrates is largely determined by the residual sulfates of calcium, magnesium, and zinc. The fractional conversion of these elements to their respective sulfates is derived from semi- empirical relationships, and multiple regression analysis is used to fit the relationships to experimental data from a commercial fluidized bed roaster. The resulting equation shows that the calcine leaving the roaster contains almost no zinc sulfate, nearly all of the calcium is present as calcium sulfate, and the amount of magnesium sulfate formed is primarily dependent upon the roaster temperatures.

The peninsula of Florida is remarkable for the uniform character and simplicity of its geological structure. Major Henry Whiting, of the U. S. Army, was one of the first to give an account of the physical features and rocks of Florida, in an article published in 1839, in the American Journal of Science (vol. xxxv., p. 47). He says: " The rocks found in situ are all calcareous, though siliceous boulders are occasionally seen, and nodules of hornstone are here and there mingled with the limestone, which elicit sparks and are sometimes used by the Indians for flints."
