Recovery and early recrystallization of heavily deformed, 99.98 pct Cr was investigated by studying metallographic structure. X-ray line sharpening, electrical resistivity, plastic properties, internal friction, and shear modulus. Appreciable recovery of resistivity, internal friction, and shear modulus together with some hardening and relief of internal strains occurred before the visible growth of a textured substructure above 350°C (recrystallization in situ). The complex behavior of shear modulus, internal friction, and its strain amplitude dependence during annealing are discussed qualitatively in terms of the relative mobility of dislocations. BY plastically deforming fully recrystallized 99.98 pct Cr above the brittle to ductile transition temperature, at -350°C. as in wire drawing, chromium can be made very ductile at room temperature. However, this ductility is lost on annealing at high temperatures when recrystallization takes place.' The present investigation was made to determine the general pattern of the changes in a number of physical and mechanical properties during recovery and recrystallization of heavily deformed chromium as part of an effort to elucidate the reasons for lack of ductility in the fully recrystallized condition. PREPARATION OF MATERIAL Wire specimens 0.027 in. in diam were prepared from arc-melted, electrolytic chromium by extruding, hot swaging and finally wire drawing at 300" to 350°C, i.e. above the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature. The total reduction in area of the wire was 98 pct and the last 3 pct of reduction was made at 100" to 150°C before cooling to room temperature. The impurity content of the material is shown in Table I. Internal friction and modulus measurements were made on a single specimen after annealing in situ at successively higher temperatures. For all other measurements, a fresh specimen was used for each temperature and annealing of these specimens was done in evacuated (0.001 mm Hg) and sealed silica tubes for 1 hr at the various temperatures up to 700°C. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS AND RESULTS The occurrence of a. transition in some physical properties of chromium at - 40°C2 imposed limitations on the temperature region where some of the measurements could be made. The reason for this transition in chromium is at present unknown but is probably associated with an antiferromagnetic state observed below - 40°C.* Heavy deformation produces an anomalous decrease in resistivity when measured at temperatures below -40°C4 though a normal increase is observed above this temperature. On the other hand internal friction in heavily deformed chromium5 over the temperature range 40" to 50°C is invariant with temperature. Above and below this range internal friction is strongly temperature dependent, increasing with increasing temperature. A temperature in this range was therefore convenient for both resistivity and internal friction measurements and for consistency the measurements of the mechanical properties were also made at about this temperature. No structural change has, however, been observed in careful X-ray measurements6 between -195" and 50°C, i.e. departure from cubic symmetry was not greater than 3:10,000; X-ray line sharpening measurements were therefore more conveniently made at room temperature.

Thermal-expansion and electrical-resistivity measurements have been carried out below 400°K on niobium and two niobium alloys containing tungsten. For anonaly in the expansion us temperature curve below aboct 300°K. This reslt is consistent with an earlier obsercation that Young's modilus joy Cb-132 lms an unusiully strong -tenperati-e dependence below roon temperature. No anonulous behavior was observed in the resistiuity vs temperature curve for either alloy or in the magnetic susceptibility us tenperature curve for Cb-132. These results are disclssed in terms of various electronic and bonding theories of the transition metals and their alloys, but it has not been possible to reach any definite conclusion as to the cause of the results obtained. ALONG with investigations of the low-temperature mechanical behavior of niobium and its alloys, some of the physical properties of these materials have also been studied. In the work described here, thermal expansion and electrical resistivity were measured below 400°K for niobium and two of its alloys, Cb-132 and D-43. In addition, the magnetic susceptibility of Cb-132 was measured over the same temperature range. The alloys are representative of two distinct tion-hardened alloy such as might find service as a turbine blade, while D-43 (Nb, 5.3 at. pct W, 1.1 at. pct Zr. and 0.08 at. pct C) is a solution- and dispersion-hardened alloy, of considerably lower strength than Cb-132. which is a potential vane material. Their significant common feature is the presence of tungsten as the principal source of solution hardening. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Thermal-expansion measurements were made with a quartz-tube dilatometer using baths of liquid nitrogen, liquid bromoethane, and a liquid polyalkylene glycol derivative to cover the range 80 to 400 K. Results are recorded as expansion relative to that of quartz, and the probable maximum error in any value of relative expansion. All, is about il pct. The metallurgical condition of the specimens, which were in rod form. will be discussed in the section dealing with experimental results. Resistivity was measured on recrystallized wires 0.030 in. in diam using a potentiometric technique. The same baths were used for temperatures between 80' and 400°K as were used for the expansion measurements. and in addition the resistance of D-43 and Cb-132 was measured at 4.2 K by immersion in liquid helium. The maximum expected experimental error in any resistivity value is about 3 pct and that in any change in resistivity about i0.05 pct. Temperatures in both sets of experiments were measured with liquid-in-glass thermometers with an accuracy usually better than 1°K. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS 1) Thermal Expansion. In Fig. 1 is shown the relative linear expansion of recrystallized niobium. D-43. and Cb-132. The curve for Cb-132 is composed of results from several runs on three different samples. Two of the samples were annealed for an hour at 1500°C to cause recrystallization and the third was annealed for an hour at 2000'C to remove some mi-crosegregation of tungsten which was known to be present in the wrought alloy received from the manu-

Zinc crystals were deformed in simple shear and it was found that anisotropic strain hardening occurred in which the inactive slip systems were hardened more than the active system. The formation of dislocation barriers by dislocation interaction was discussed as a possible explanation of the hardening of the latent systems. STRAIN hardening which accompanies slip in a metal crystal is not limited to the slip systems actively contributing to the plastic strain. There is also a strengthening of the latent slip systems which are crystallographically equivalent to the active system. In the case of aluminum deformed in tension, Taylor and Elam1 found that plastic flow on one set of octahedral planes caused either the same or a slightly greater hardening on an inactive set. Similar results have been obtained for crystals of a brass2 and of Cu-A1 solid solutions.3 Experiments by Rohm and Kochendorfer4 indicated that the hardening of the active system exceeded the hardening of any latent system for aluminum crystals deformed in shear. On the other hand, strain hardening in zinc and cadmium crystals tested in simple shear at —196°C was recently found to be greater in the latent than in the active slip direction." When the strain direction was shifted during testing to a direction 60" from the original, a higher stress was required for glide to continue than would have been needed for flow to proceed in the original direction. The relation between the hardening of active and latent systems must be complex, depending upon the relative orientations of the systems and upon the experimental techniques used to deform the crystal. A detailed knowledge of the hardening produced in latent systems would be valuable in choosing between possible dislocation models of the strain-hardening process. The experimental data now available are incomplete and even contradictory. The present study was undertaken to provide quantitative information regarding the relative amount of hardening of active and latent systems for a particularly simple case. Zinc crystals were deformed in simple shear along one of the three crystallographically equivalent directions [250], [1210], and [1120] in the slip plane, and the relative hardening produced in each of these directions was compared. Experimental Procedure and Results The single crystals of 99.99 pct purity zinc used in this investigation were grown from the melt in the form of 1 in. diam spheres. Shear specimens were acid-machined from the crystals by a method which has been described previously. The gage section of the test specimen was a cylinder having a height of 1/8 in. and a cross-sectional area of approximately 1/3 sq in. All specimens were machined with the axis of this cylindrical gage section aligned with the [0001] axis of the crystal. An innovation in the design of the shearing apparatus for these tests was the provision for a rapid shift in the direction of the applied stress from one slip direction to any other slip direction lying in the same slip plane. Current -vo1tage -temperature characteristics were studied for Al-A12O3-Al, Au structures. The oxide film was grown by gaseous oxidation in an 0, glow discharge. The electron-transfer mechanism was identified as tunneling and the barrier heights and thickness were determined. It was found that the barrier height at the parent aluminum-oxide interface is 1.5 ev and the built-in vloltage with an aluminum counter electrode is 0.35 v. The growth mechanism of the oxide is also discussed and it is suggested that Mott&apos;s theory is not applicable in describing the growth. Discrepancies were observed in the detailed comparison of tunneling theory, based on a trapezoidal model, with the data, and several possible explanations are discussed. THEORETICAL analyses of electron tunneling from one nonsuperconducting metal to another through an extremely thin insulating film have been presented.1-6 These calculations relate the current density, J, to the voltage, V, between the two metals, and to the temperature, T. The results of these calculations indicate that the magnitude of J and the detailed shape of the J-V characteristic will in general depend most strongly upon such properties of the insulating film as the thickness, the dielectric constant, and the structure of the electron energy barrier profile. The experimental results of many7-11 workers have corroborated the main features of these calcu- lations and have in fact been used to determine properties of the thin insulating film. It has been demonstrated, for example, that the tunneling current formulation of simmons4 is adequate to describe the observed J-V characteristic over approximately 10 orders of magnitude of current. Furthermore, from these observations and analyses, insight into the nature of the A1-A12O3 (thermally grown) interface region has been obtained.&apos;&apos; The temperature dependence of the tunnel current has also been studied and, although a self-consistent set of tunneling parameters can be chosen to describe these data at low voltages (i.e., <0.5 v), the tunneling parameters are different from those obtained from higher voltage (i.e., of the order of 1 to 5 v) measurements." We have measured the effect of temperature and voltage upon the tunnel current at higher applied voltages and find that the theory is inadequate to describe all of the effects reported here. A discussion of the origin of this inadequacy is presented following a description of the samples used for these experiments, and the experimental results. SAMPLE PREPARATION Metal-insulator-metal structures were fabricated in the following way. A 99.999 pct A1 charge was used to deposit, in vacuo, thirty films, 2000Å thick, onto a 1 by 2 in. glass substrate (7059 Corning glass). Prior to deposition the substrate was glow-discharged for final cleanup and then baked at 200°C for 2 hr at a pressure of 5 x 10-7 torr. RECENT development of high-temperature brazing alloys has required information regarding the eutec-tic temperature and composition of the Pd-rich section of the Pd-B system.. Literature on this subject was found to be scanty with no complete system yet determined. Buddery and welch1 report an inter-metallic compound occurring in the Pd-B system at 6.33 wt pct B (PdsBz). Another source, Sieverts and Bruning,2 indicates that after annealing at 700°C, a 1.6 and a 2.0 wt pct B alloy were two phase whereas a 0.75 pct B alloy was single phase. Recent work3 using a hot-stage microscope has proposed a eutectic temperature of 743OC. This method utilized the observation of the onset of incipient melting at grain boundaries. The eutectic composition, however, was not determined. METHODS AND PR0CEDURES Five alloys were prepared by triple inert arc-melting high-purity palladium (95.98 pct) with additions of 2 to 6 pct purified amorphous boron. The alloys were crushed within a hardened steel mortar with a steel pestle. The 2 pct alloy, however, was too tough to be crushed in the above manner so was crushed by successive reductions through a rolling mill. Approximately 17 to 18 g of the crushed alloy was used in the thermal analysis. The alloys were melted in pure quartz crucibles. The thermocouple protection tubes were also of quartz and fused along the inside wall of crucibles to prevent floating of the thermocouple. This was an expediency as centering of the thermocouple in the melt would have been preferable. Melting was done in a tube furnace with a slow flow of tank helium maintained as a protective atmosphere. Heating and cooling rates were maintained at 3.5OC per min through the critical temperature ranges by means of a synchronous motor hook-up to a furnace controller. All specimens were heated to 100°C over the indicated liquidus on heating prior to reversing to the cooling cycle. Specimens emerged from the furnace with mirrorlike brightness attesting to the protective quality of the helium atmosphere. Thermal arrests were detected by the differential thermocouple technique using chrome l-alumel couples and nickel as the reference specimen. Arrests were recorded on a Leeds-Northrup automatic X-Y recorder. The specimen temperature and temperature difference were read to + 7.5OC and ± 1.5OC, respectively. These readings were well within the sensitivity of the instrument amplifier. Chromel-alumel couples were used in lieu of Pt-Rh as very few arrests were contemplated in excess of 1200" to 1300°C, the approach of instability. No standardization was performed on these thermocouples subsequent to their use. RESULTS The thermal arrest temperatures obtained are plotted in Fig. 1 as a function of wt pct B. The composition function was obtained by chemical analysis of portions of the specimens after the thermal analysis was completed. The 2 to 6 pct nominal alloys were found to have 1.80, 2.35, 3.65, 4.18 and 5.90

THE utilization of casing-head gas in the manufacture of casing-head gasoline by both the absorption and the compression method is a most important factor in the conservation of our natural resources.. Any industry connected with the oil business, in general, possesses particular attraction for a large number of people not conversant with its basic principles, for the reason that the large fortunes made in the production and utilization of petroleum and its products have been given undue prominence. The general impression of the public that enormous profits are to be realized in the casing-head gas industry with minimum expenditures of both capital and effort has, in a large measure, accounted for the phenomenal expansion of the industry in recent years and, likewise, has resulted in many mistakes and loss of investment funds. It is true that many installations have been very profitable, but such instances are always the result of careful planning, experienced judgment and conservative estimates. The inception and subsequent activity in the manufacture of casing-head gasoline, enabling the business to assume an important position in the petroleum industry, are of, comparatively recent origin, as its greatest growth, particularly in Oklahoma, occurred during the years 1917 and 1918. Much information must yet be secured and systematized concerning the methods of manufacture of gascline from high-yield casing-head gas, and a large field is still open for the application of accumulated experience and good engineering practice in devising better methods of extracting gasoline from casing-head gas of the poorer grades. The absorption process is coming into general use as a most efficient system of treating casing-head gas, and even so-called dry gas. In fact, there is a decided tendency toward the universal adoption of the absorption process as against compression methods. However, a general discussion of the relative merits of these two systems is not within the scope of this article.

Current mineral industry trends toward handling the high tonnages of lower grade ore and tailings retreat lead to a continuing need for large volume flotation cells. The benefits which accompany the larger cell flotation circuit include reduced capital cost, less mill floor space, reduced operational complexity, and less maintenance, provided the metallurgical performance and solids suspension capability of the cell are not compromised. This study reviews development considerations pertinent to large mechanical air induction type flotation cells from the standpoint of cell internal hydrodynamic characteristics and metallurgical performance. While the importance of process related factors such as chemical usage, pH control, solids size and loading, and circuit arrangement cannot be denied, this study will emphasize the relationship of cell size (volume), mechanism geometry (impeller diameter), and mechanism operating conditions (rotor speed and submergence), to air transfer, liquid circulation, liquid "rise velocity" and mechanism power draw. Specific hydraulic performance maps for large capacity 300 and 500 cu ft flotation cells will be reviewed in terms of the relationship between the operational variables and the air and liquid flow conditions within the cell. Metallurgical results, obtained under plant operating conditions for 300 and 500 cu ft cells, are included to illustrate the metallurgical performance similarity of flotation cells which follow hydrodynamic scale-up criteria set forth in this investigation.

This paper has been written to summarize the laboratory and field studies leading to injection of Pacific Ocean water into the Third Grubb formation. Laboratory tests for studying the permeabilities of cores to Pacific Ocean water are described. Resu1ts of these tests showed that the water could be successfully injected if it is chertzically stable, sterile, and properly filtered. Clay swelling was shown to be a comparatively minor factor in permeability reduction. Studies leading to development of an economical system for properly conditioning the ocean water are discussed. It was necessary to control pH, calcium carbonate deposition, bacterial growth, iron solubility. oxygen, and suspended .solids. A relatively simple system combining the use of sulifur dioxide, a quaternary rlmmonium chloride, and filtration was shown to adeqrrately control all these factors. This combination has not previozrsly been used as a water treating technique. Evaluation tests of the water conditioning system prior to injection are described, and results of such tests are presented. Control measures needed to insure a continusously adequate water treatment are reviewed. INTRODUCTION The utilization of sea water for waterflooding has only recently been attempted. Knowledge of treating requirements has been limited, and in most cases no water treating has been done. Prior to the initiation of the Third Grubb zone pilot water flood at Ventura, Calif.,1,2 extensive laboratory research was done in an effort to define the treatment necessary to provide a suitable injection fluid. Close coordination and cooperation between field and research personnel were found to be the foremost requisites in developing the most economical and practical method for treating ocean water. LABORATORY STUDIES Plugging Tendencies of Untreated Ocean Water A program of laboratory studies was initiated for the purpose of evaluating whether ocean water could be injected into the formation for prolonged periods of time without causing plugging of the pore spaces of the formation. Because of the fairly low permeability of the formation (averaging about 40 md), it was realized from the outset that a water of exceptionally high quality was needed. Ocean water used in the laboratory studies was carefully filtered through ultrafine fritted glass filters, having nominal maximum pore sizes of 1.4 microns. Permeability tests were then performed on representative core material from the formation. It soon became apparent in these tests that filtration alone was not a sufficient treatment for the ocean water. Prolonged injection of the filtered water caused rapid plugging of the core samples. The permeability decline of a typical sample is illustrated by Curve A in Fig. 1. The several factors which can contribute to this plugging tendency are briefly reviewed below: Interaction with Formation Clays An evaluation of clay swelling effects on liquid permeability was made using core samples from the Grubb formation. An oil was chosen for determining the reference liquid permeability because it would not tend to react with any clays that might be present in the formation. The samples were then extracted, dried, and resat-urated with either treated ocean water, formation water, or fresh water. Permeabilities to the various waters were then determined. When anhydrous cupric sulfate is heated in a stream of nonreactive gas, cupric oxysulfate is formed. When this reaction is complete, the cupric oxysulfate then decomposes to cupric oxide, which is the normal end product of reaction. The kinetics of each of these reactions has been studied using pellets prepared from finely divided cupric sulfate and from finely divided cupric oxysulfate. In each case, the reactant-product interface within the pellet is well-defined, and by normalizing the decrease in inter facial area with the weight fraction of the pellet decomposed it has been shown that the interface migrates into the pellet at a uniform rate at constant temperature. The activation energy estirnated for the decomposition of cupric sulfate is 57 ± 7 kcal per mole and that for cupric oxysulfate is 67 ± 8 kcal per mole. The rate of interfacial reaction is flow-sensitive, increasing with increasing flow of a sweep gas in the range from 50 to 2000 cu cm per min. The rate of decomposition is retarded by sulphur trioxide in the sweep gas. The relationship between sulfur trioxide Partial pressure and rate is consistent with the Langmuir Adsorption Isotherm governing the retention of sulfur trioxide in the interfacial layer. MOST of the work reported on the thermal decomposition of cupric sulfate and of cupric oxysulfate is related to the thermodynamics of the individual decompositions.&apos;-4 No information is available on the rates of the individual reactions, on their activation energies, or on the effects of gas flow or of partial pressure of sulfur trioxide on the reaction rates. Some dubious conclusions based on relative reaction rates have been drawn from studies on the oxidation of sulfides. For example, on the basis of the products observed in a quenched system, it has been suggested5" that, when copper sulfide is roasted, the cupric oxide which is formed arises from the decomposition of either cupric sulfate or cupric oxysulfate. This is very difficult to reconcile with the thermodynamics of the C-S-O System,3 which support the probability that both cuprous oxide and cupric oxide precede cupric oxysulfate and cupric sulfate in the sequence of products formed during the oxidation of cuprous sulfide. In this paper the individual sulfate decomposition reactions will be examined and suggestions will be advanced for the mechanism of reaction. This will be based on the effects on reaction rate of changes in interfacial area, flow rate, and back-pressure of sulfur trioxide. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The copper source material used in all experiments was Fisher Certified Reagent Grade anhydrous cupric sulfate, for which the following analysis was supplied by the manufacturer: chloride, 0.002 pct; alkalies and earths, 0.2 pct; insoluble, 0.002 pct; iron, 0.020 pct. Cupric oxysulfate was prepared by roasting cupric sulfate for 48 hr, with frequent rabbling, in an open tray in a muffle furnace maintained at 725°C. At this temperature, cupric sulfate develops about 0.16 atm pressure of combined sulfur trioxide, sulfur dioxide, and oxygen. Laboratory and pilot scale tests have been made to determine the utility of heavymedia separation, particularly a cone-type separator, as a means of recovering aluminum and other values from shredded municipal solid waste. The effect of the method of shredding on the behavior of aluminum in a heavy-media system was determined. Two-stage pilot-scale heavy-media separations were made with size fractions of shredded refuse. Recoveries of aluminum, as well as other components of the refuse, were measured and medium losses determined. The experimental results indicate that with certain reservations a heavy-media cone system can be utilized for aluminum separation and recovery from shredded and air-classified municipal solid waste. Observations made using two-stage heavy-media separation in a drum unit are included. Qualitatively, the results from the two types of separators are similar.

FOREWOHD-Americans have been able to create wealth from the nation&apos;s natural resources to an extent unprecedented in recorded history, thanks largely to the existence of a free market and of a rational body of laws. The General Mining Law of 1872, for instance, by establishing the rules of the game, was quite effective in channeling the ability of Americans to discover and develop mineral deposits. Another example was the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920 which made available the more easily discovered mineral deposits by spelling out the conditions and rules under which miners could obtain leases on federal lands.

Emphasis on publications related to coal mining subsidence and damages is appropriate at present in view of the energy crisis and increased coal production and public alertness. I have worked in Harrisburg with the state government Public Utilities Commission on energy-fuel matters and issues (Parate, 1978-80). I have participated in the communication on subsidence/ damage reviews and status with the Bureau of Mines Liasion Office (Kebblish, 1978-79). I have done research (Parate, 1965) and published papers (Parate, 1972; Parate, 1967) in Britain on coal mining subsidence and damages around Sheffield-Nottinghamshire coal fields. I have a few comments on the recent paper titled, "Pennsylvania Subsidence Control Guidelines," by C.J. Bise. 1) What is the basis of the empirical formula or guideline, LD _ (0.27 x D) ± 4.6, defining the support area? 2) The particular structure may not be damaged due to vertical uniform displacement caused by mining beneath unless the displacement is differential (King, 1964). 3) The author mentions the limited subsidence research in the US, and quite rightly so. But he fails to quote any work reference by continental investigators except the British or review work by the US. What are the reasons? 4) The author has not mentioned the importance and role of angle of draw for Pennsylvania, Kentucky, or Illinois coal fields. Is there any current research investigation on the relationship between subsidence research investigation, damage, and transference of strains to structures? There have been a number of newspaper reports on subsidence damage in Wilkesbarre and other areas in Pennsylvania. Is the author aware of such instances and traditional attitudes to such issues? Many times government agencies--due to lack of funds, technical expertise, and public policies--are unable or do not find it interesting to keep updates on these issues, as per the author&apos;s knowledge and experience with state governments. 5) What is the net effect and role of the D.E.R. Insurance Office on the monitoring, reducing, or controlling subsidence damage, particularly in Pennsylvania?

Since the last publication of tabulated results of grindability tests by the authors1 the total number of ball-mill tests made has more than doubled, and rod-mill tests have become increasingly important. Nearly all of the standard closed-circuit ball-mill and rod-mill tests made to date are included in the present tabulation, together with additional information not previously published. Standard Ball-mill Grindability Tests The method of conducting these closed-circuit tests has not been altered. A sample of the ore or other material is stage-crushed in rolls set at 1/16-in. opening with a 6-mesh screen until all of it has passed the screen. The combined minus 6-mesh screen undersize is mixed, sampled and screen-analyzed, and its apparent specific gravity is determined by packing and shaking in a standard container, and weighing. Since the last publication of tabulated results of grindability tests by the authors1 the total number of ball-mill tests made has more than doubled, and rod-mill tests have become increasingly important. Nearly all of the standard closed-circuit ball-mill and rod-mill tests made to date are included in the present tabulation, together with additional information not previously published. Standard Ball-mill Grindability Tests The method of conducting these closed-circuit tests has not been altered. A sample of the ore or other material is stage-crushed in rolls set at 1/16-in. opening with a 6-mesh screen until all of it has passed the screen. The cost of tunneling is highly sensitive to the rock characteristics through which the tunnel is to be driven. These characteristics affect in a major way the rates at which tunnels and shafts can be driven and the degree to which the openings must be supported to maintain them in a permanent stable condition. Tunnel and shaft design and cost criteria have been computerized, permitting estimates of tunnel-shaft systems to be made directly from inputs of rock mechanics characteristics and other data. Curves of quantities of steel, rock bolts, and other rock support items as related to tunnel size and rock quality designation are presented. An illustrative example of the use of the program in calculating the cost of a hypothetical tunnel system is included.

With the development of open-pit mines of ever increasing depth, the stability of the pit slopes in soil and rock is of growing economic importance. How is it, considering the newness of the problem that we know anything at all about the stability of man-made slopes? How much do we know and how did it all begin? We can make a reasonable estimate of the stability of a slope in soil, but we know as yet woefully little about slopes in rock because the problem is much more complex. It is only with the development of the capacity of the computer to handle wearisome calculations that any but the simplest of stability problems in rock have become possible of solution. But what we do know is a guide of immense value in the design of slopes in rock. But remember that the computer is a great elevator; it takes everyone&apos;s feet off the ground! So our study began with soils and what is now known as "Soil Mechanics", which is a translation of the German term "Bodenmechanik". It is a pity that the title of Terzaghi&apos;s book "Erdbaumechanik" was not used instead. But here the task of the translator is difficult because English lacks the facility of German to string together several words and make a new one whose meaning is unequivocal. Thus, we have the three German words &apos;Erde&apos; &apos;Bau&apos; and &apos;Mechanik&apos;. &apos;Erde&apos; means "earth" in almost all the English senses including "soil". &apos;Bau&apos; and &apos;bauen&apos; convey the meaning of building and construction, and &apos;Mechanik&apos; means "mechanics" which includes statics and dynamics and the &apos;mechanics of materials&apos;, etc. So that a correct translation of the German is a phrase like "the mechanics of construction with, in or on, earth or soil." However we are stuck with &apos;Soil Mechanics&apos; and that is where it all began. Now this study or subject did not begin with &apos;Terzaghi&apos; although his contribution to the subject is unquestionably greater than that of any other single person. Every scientific discipline has its &apos;classical problem&apos; and that of soil mechanics is &apos;the earth pressure problem&apos; and it began in the 17th century. In fact, it probably began before this with the introduction of gunpowder to Western Europe in about the 15th century, but the first known reference to the problem was by Vauban, a distinguished French military engineer who lived from 1633 to 1707 and who gave rules for the dimensions of retaining walls from 6 to 80 ft. in height. The soil properties were not mentioned by Vauban probably because the rules were intended to be applied to fortifications only, but Poncelet (1840) claimed that Vauban&apos;s rules were based on a theory, and not simply on military and practical

Unit Rig & Equipment Co., manufacturer of Lectra Haul trucks, is continually studying methods of reducing the operating costs of large haulage trucks. Reduction of haulage system operating costs is an important goal that equipment operators and equipment manufacturers constantly try to improve on. One of the most variable and important factors affecting operating costs is actual truck operating practices. An examination was centered on methods to optimize truck utilization. It was found that a very effective method of accomplishing this goal would be an automatic truck control (ATC) system to automatically control a fleet of haulage trucks in a predetermined pattern. Economic studies were conducted which showed a very favorable reduction in mine operating costs by use of an ATC system. In 1970, Unit Rig & Equipment Co., in conjunction with SAAB-SCANIA began preliminary development of adapting, for truck use, a proven automated control system, previously used for train systems, small trucks, and military target vehicles. In 1974, the first prototype system was installed on a Lectra Haul M-100 and tested extensively at Unit Rig&apos;s test track in Tulsa, OK. This truck and system were then displayed publicly at the 1974 convention in Las Vegas. In 1976, the system was redesigned for production to maximize reliability, ease maintenance, and to accommodate future control and-status reporting developments proposed for haulage trucks. The new design equipment was manufactured, and a full system test will be conducted in an actual open-pit mine for an extended period to evaluate reliability, compile economic data, and obtain application information to evaluate complete mine haulage system conversions to ATC. System Description The ATC system is designed to provide automatic control of all the vehicle functions normally accomplished by the vehicle operator. The basic system consists of the on-board control equipment and the wayside control equipment. The on-board equipment receives commands from the wayside equipment and controls all the truck functions. In addition, on-board sensors monitor all critical truck functions and provide instructions to the truck and system to assure safe operation. The wayside equipment consists of a buried guidewire, block control units and a central controller which provides predetermined signals to the on-board equipment for speed control, steering, and for auxiliary functions (dumping, horn, etc.) through the guidewire located in the truck&apos;s path. The wayside equipment also controls vehicle separation, system status, and provides truck location to a central display panel. The central control panel can vary the speed level signals over any segment and can also command an emergency stop to halt all the units. [Fig. 1] illustrates a typical ATC installation. If ATC is used in operations which require flexibility and mobility at the end of the ATC guidance network, the trucks can then be operated by either radio remote control or manually to complete their assigned functions.

QUICKSILVER is a body that consists of flowing and liquid materials, almost like water with a shining whiteness; it is composed by Nature of a viscous, subtle substance with an overflowing abundance of moistness and coldness together. This composition, in the opinion of the philosophic alchemists, is a thing that is very disposed to become metal-indeed they say that it is the original seed of all metals. When it lacks the warmness and dryness or the specific time that they require, it cannot congeal and so remains in the form that we see as an imperfect thing without becoming metal. These clever investigators have also called it mercury in consideration of its properties, perhaps because of its resemblance to the planet of him whose actions place him between gods and men, according to the poets in their stories. Thus these investigators think that this has a similar place among perfect metals, since it is the primary mineral matter. It might also be that they called it so because like the god Mercury it is winged and fugitive, and by virtue of its powerful subtlety penetrates all things and can issue forth from them at will. But let it be called by any name they wish-it does not matter to us. I, like them, shall sometimes call it mercury and sometimes [23 ] quicksilver as it has been named to me, and you will understand it as such. Now I shall leave aside the disputes on whether it is the primary matter of metals or not, since I have said enough concerning this question in the first chapter of the First Book. In order to approach what the philosophers say about it, I say that it may well be material about to be converted into metal, but since it is seen to be so ill-proportioned and so badly decocted, I cannot believe that it can be disposed to the generation of all kinds of metals. Indeed, if it is, I think that if its necessary processes had not been interrupted it would be more apt to generate lead, tin, iron, or even silver rather than copper or gold. And if we wish to consider it in relation to the natural complexions [of metals] or to the power of the, planets, I think that mercury is far distant from those of gold and from the power of the sun and of the moon. CLEANING fine coal in jigs is not new in Europe, where the feldspar jig is being used almost exclusively for this purpose. A feldspar jig operates with an artificial bed made up generally of feldspar or other hard rock material. Dimensions and specific gravity of this material must be of suitable values for good bedding qualities. For good efficiency, the size should range between 1x2 in. and 2x2x½ in. thick. The disadvantage of an artificial bed is that it is not mobile and must be replaced every so often with new material to obtain good cleavage characteristics. A semi-mobile bed has been developed to retain only a part of the feldspar on the sieve screen— the other part is drawn off with the refuse material, from which it is reclaimed and returned to the jig feed. Recirculating this feldspar rock offers definite advantages. However, in time it will lose its original shape because of wear, and new bed material must be added to the jig feed. The latest feldspar jigs arc generally air-pulsated, Baum-type jigs, although more than 70 pct of the feldspar jigs operating in Continental Europe are still of the piston type. These jigs are very popular in Europe, but they do require a great deal of time and attention. New Theory to Eliminate Artificial Bedding: At the preparation plants of Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. it has always been the contention that a small piston-type jig could be developed to clean fine 1/4x0-in. coal down to 28 to 60 mesh efficiently by obtaining and admitting bedding material from the present plant refuse circuit to the jig feed. This eliminates use of artificial bedding materials. The jig should incorporate these essential adjustable features as follows: Adjustable Sieve Screen A screen that can be raised and lowered to increase or decrease washing compartment depth. The sieve screen also can be set on an incline level, or decline. Adjustable Plunger Eccentric Length of stroke can be adjusted to increase or decrease pulsion and suction. Variable Plunger Speed Variable speed reducer for decreasing and increasing the number of strokes per minute. Water Distribution Adjustable baffle plate separating the plunger and sieve compartment so the water can be distributed uniformly over the entire sieve screen area. Refuse Ejector Special unique rubber-type refuse ejector gate operated by air and electrically controlled (as a conventional jig). Automatic Control Conventional float that measures the specific gravity of the coal-water refuse medium in the jig is of the submerged type. The float is mounted on a vertical stem held in position by two parallel arms. A movable weight regulates the effective specific gravity of the float. The float stem can be raised and lowered, having a graduated scale to indicate the depth of bed for the setting of the float. Hutch Drawoff Hutch material is drawn from the cell compartment to the elevator compartment by gravity.
