Pure gold was deformed by wire drawing at room temperature and 78°K. After deformation at room temperature, the stored energy and the resistivity increment reached nearly constant levels at high strains, whereas the yield stress continued to increase with strain. After deformation at 78K, the stored energy, the reszstivity increment, and the yield stress were larger than after deformation at room temperature mzd increased continuously with strain. Mercury is the latest ecological disaster. It was believed to be no pollution problem because it is heavier than water and expected to fall to the bottom of streams. But the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that mercury in a dozen states and several Canadian provinces was being ingested by fish. A Deadly Dose First to sound the alarm was Canada when a graduate student's research revealed that mercury contamination in Lake St. Clair had reached 1.4 pmm. which is almost three times the 0.5 ppm the FDA's allowable maximum.

SINCE the earliest years of recorded history the durability and protective qualities of asphalt and tar have been known and utilized. The mummies of early Egyptian kings were coated with asphaltic materials, and asphalt mastics were common in Babylon. However, according to various authorities, it was not until 1780 that the first forerunner of present-day composition roofing was discovered,1 and the large-scale expansion of the industry has taken place since 1900. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Development was stimulated by the growing popularity of manufactured gas. The by-product tars from these operations accumulated in large waste piles that had no commercial value and were a source of annoyance and expense to the gas companies. These tars were offered at very attractive terms to anyone who would take them away, and the infant "composition" roofing industry benefited accordingly. At first the process consisted simply of dipping sheets of burlap or other fabric in a tank of molten tar or asphalt. The long strip of roofing was rolled up for convenient handling, and the early experimenters soon found that it was necessary to dust the surface of their new "roll roofing" with some kind of material that would prevent the tarred surfaces from sticking together. Any finely divided, low priced local material like sand or fine gravel served this purpose and from its application the roofing-granule industry grew. As time went on other characteristics of a properly applied mineral surfacing were recognized. As with wooden shingles, tar and asphalt can be ignited by flying embers from near-by fires. It was found that by increasing the largest particle size to the maximum that could be successfully embedded, and by properly controlling the amount of smaller fractions retained in the grade so as to cover the asphalt completely a Nigh degree of resistance to fire was attained. Needless to say, in this early period asphaltic roofing needed such selling points to gain acceptance in a field dominated by wood, slate, and tile. When asphalt is protected from the sun's rays it is extremely durable, but when exposed to sunlight its surface is comparatively rapidly decomposed. Completely covering asphalt roofing with mineral surfacing protects the asphalt and adds materially to the life of the roof-conservatively, 500 per cent. Slate Granules In the production of split slate shingles a large quantity of waste slate is accumulated, as 60 to go per cent of the rock quarried is discarded. This waste was a continuing burden on the industry. Some was marketed as ground slate flour for filler in paint and linoleum, and there is a record that as early as 1906 two carloads of coarse screenings from slate flour were marketed as granules for surfacing roofing. IT is generally recognized that "low temperatures" have a definite effect on the properties of metals and alloys. Furthermore, it is also generally understood that the effect is decidedly adverse. The possibility that the same low-temperature treatment might be employed for the purpose of improving certain properties of the .alloys has received less attention until recently, and the experimental and theoretical knowledge consequently is meager. The effect of low temperatures may be studied in two ways: by studying such properties as tensile strength, hardness, impact resistance, etc., at low temperature, and by studying the properties of alloys at room temperature after these alloys have been subjected to a low-temperature treatment. Even in the latter case, certain properties will differ materially from the same properties obtained on identical material but without cold treatment. In other words, subjecting alloys to cold treatment results in an irreversible change in mechanical properties. Changes of this character are usually indications of the appearance of a new phase or phases, and would be likely to occur in alloys which, either by virtue of their composition or by heat treatment, are retained at room temperature in a metastable condition. Consequently, studies of the effect of low temperatures logically should be conducted from the physicochemical point of view, since the results of such studies not only would furnish metallurgists with interesting theoretical data but would clearly indicate the classes of alloys that would hold promise of improvement, and, possibly, of new applications. As the present investigation deals with chromium and chromium-nickel alloys of iron of the stainless variety, it has been thought desirable to present the data concerning low-temperature properties of these alloys, available from the most recent and most comprehensive work of H: S. An investigation was performed to determine conditions for optimizing the spacing of simultaneously initiated multiple explosive columns. This was done by using models of mortar, dolomite, and Plexiglas with 10-grain mild detonating fuse as the explosive charge. It was desired to simulate blastholes with multiple primers initiated by detonating fuse or when high-velocity explosives are used in low-velocity materials. It was found that optimum spacing between multiple charges was strongly influenced by charge length. At less than optimum charge length, the spacing at which complete shearing was possible between adjacent charges decreased exponentially with a subsequent loss of broken material volume. For charges fired simultaneously, larger burdens and spacings were possible as compared to those necessary for single-crater charges. For each material studied, there was a characteristic optimum charge length and a maximum attainable spacing at any given burden. Proper selection of the spacing distance between charges is fundamental to successful blasting. Its value directly affects the cost of drilling and explosives used per unit of broken material. In addition, the choice of a spacing that is Compatible with a given set of blasting conditions aids in the control of fragmentation sizing, ground vibrations, overbreak, and throw which in turn, influence other production costs. For example, normally loaded blastholes that are spaced too closely invariably promote overbreak and usually give coarse fragmentation. Unless care is taken, airblast and violent flyrock will occur and under certain conditions cutoffs and misfires may result. Too large a spacing, on the other hand, frequently leads to conditions that form bootlegs or toes. The choice of a particular spacicg to use, however, is largely a matter of individual experience and judgment, usually based on trial and error. Very little is known or can be found in the literature with regard to how the spacing between charges is related to field conditions and charge geometry. As a general rule, the firing time sequence of adjacent charges and properties of a material are thought to have the most significant influence on the spacing distance best suited for any given field condition. For example, delayed initiation of adjacent charges usually always requires a closer spacing than when charges are fired at the same time. This should be expected if one considers that the energy normally dissipated and lost in the surrounding ground from charges fired independently would be captured and utilized for breaking material between charges when they are initiated together. Spacing can be extended also when charges are aligned with structural planes of a material, such as jointing, along which shearing is relatively easy. It is customary to relate the spacing (S) between charges to their common burden (B) in the form of a spacing ratio, or SIB. The burden normally is considered as the optimum depth or distance from any single charge perpendicular to the nearest free or open face at which the desired fragmentation and maximum crater yield are obtained. For production blasting, value of the ratio is generally considered to vary from 1 to 2, depending on conditions.1-6 When adjacent charges are fired independent of one another, the value varies from 1 to about 1.4, the closer amount being employed to square corners or produce craters having the ideal 90" apex angle. The larger ratio is the geometric balance value for craters having an apex angle of 135". The basic ideal crater forms in the plane of the charge diameter for charges fired independently are shown in Fig. 1. In the event charges are fired simultaneously, geometric balance in the plane of their charge diameters suggests that a spacing ratio near 2 would be appropriate, as illustrated by Fig. 2. In practice, however, some compromise ratio value must be selected to conform with the specific ground conditions. An example would be where the jointing planes tend to produce 60° or 120° crater angles, the appropriate geometrically balanced charge arrangement being given by Fig. 3. In this condition, the spacing ratio is 1.15, not 1 or 1.4 as suggested for the 90° cratering of independently fired adjacent charges. In view of the foregoing, it would seem logical to assume that whenever charges all having the same burden are fired at the same time, spacing distances always can be greater than those permitted by charges fired independently. In practice this is not the case, however.

Self-diffilsion coefficients for cr51 and Fe55 in 12 pct Cr-Fe and 17 pct Cr-Fe for Fe55 in chromium, and for Cr51 in vanadium have been measured. The results are compared with other values for the Fe-Cr system, and with the various theories of diffusion in hcc metals. Some empirical correlations are discussed between Do and Q in hcc systems, or, expressed differently, the constancy of ?G*/T solidus for seveval bcc metals and alloys is noted. It appears very probable that a vacancy mechanism is operative in bcc metals, hut this cannot he stated with certainty. THE great bulk of work on diffusion in metals, both experimental and theoretical, was for many years concentrated on those with close-packed and, in particular, fcc lattices.1,2 There appears to be little doubt that the mechanism of diffusion in these solids is vacancy migration, leading to mass transfer and in substitutional solid solutions to a Kirken-dall effect.3,4 For bcc metals, the picture is much less clear. The Kirkendall effect certainly occurs in several alloys.5-10 However, attempts to understand the factors contributing to the pre-exponential in the usual expression for the diffusion coefficient D =D, exp {-Q/RT) by extension of ideas useful in close-packed lattices have not always been successful. Zener,11 Leclaire,12 and Pound, Paxton, and Bitlerl3 have suggested that various forms of ring diffusion may be important in some bcc metals. For close-packed metals, Do is usually about 1 sq cm per sec and Q - 35Tm kcal per mole (Tm = melting temperature in OK). The theory of Pound et al. suggests for ring diffusion that Do may be about 10-4 and Q, although difficult to calculate with any precision, would be significantly less than 35 T,. The experimental results on self and solute diffusion in ? uranium14,15 and ß zirconium,10 and for solutes in 0 titanium,17 and possibly for self-diffu- sion in chromium below about 0.75 T,," gave some credence to this theory. However, not all bcc materials display low values of DO and Q, and the exceptions were not predicted by any theory. Furthermore, it has recently become apparent that, in bcc materials, log D is not always linear with T-l if a sufficiently wide range of temperature is studied.16,18 This variation may be such that Q may increase18,19 or decrease20 with increasing temperature. The present work was undertaken in an attempt to provide further diffusion data on bcc metals, and to try to understand the factors which contribute to differences in behavior between the various elements. For part of this work, the Fe-Cr system was chosen since it is of considerable technological importance, and data on 12 pct Cr and 17 pct Cr alloys appeared well worthwhile to supplement that existing for the remainder of the stern.18,22 The diffusion of Fe55 in chromium was studied as an example of a more or less "normal" tracer element in a possibly abnormal host lattice. Finally, no data were available for vanadium, the neighbor of chromium in the periodic table, because of lack of a suitable isotope so cr55 was used as a tracer in a few preliminary experiments. For convenience, we shall refer to elements whose Do and Q are low compared to those predicted by Zener's theory as "anomalous". PROCEDURE This investigation determined self-diffusion rates by means of radioactive tracers and the integral-activity method first utilized by Gruzin.23 In this method a thin layer of radioisotope of the diffusing element is plated or coated onto a planar surface of the diffusion sample, which is then given an isothermal-diffusion annealing treatment. The determination of an activity-penetration curve involves measuring the residual activity of the specimen after each successive layer or section has been removed parallel to the original planar surface. The method used here is essentially the same as that used by Gondolf18 and Kunitake.21 Two radioactive tracers, cr51 and Fe55, were used in this investigation. Diffusion coefficients were determined for the diffusion of one or both of these tracers in four different materials, viz., Fe-12 wt pct Cr alloy, Fe-17 wt pct Cr alloy, chromium, and vanadium. The diffusion samples had nominal dimensions of 1.5 cm diameter and 0.5 cm thickness. The grain size was several millimeters for the Fe-Cr alloys and at least 1 mm for the chromium and vanadium samples. Accurately planar surfaces

Configurations of ferrite crystals have been found in a plain carbon steel which appear to have resulted from the nucleation of new ferrite crystals at the interphase boundaries of previously formed crystals despite the high carbon concentrations which necessarily develop at these boundaries. This phenomenon has been termed sympathetic nucleation. An attempt has been made to reconcile the occurrence of sympathetic nu-cleation with current nucleation theory. THIS investigation is one of a series on the formation of proeutectoid ferrite from austenite. From the viewpoint of chemical composition, this reaction consists of the nucleation and diffusional growth of crystals of carbon-poor ferrite within a matrix of carbon-rich austenite. The austenite adjacent to the austenite-ferrite boundaries will be greatly enriched in carbon, approximately to the value of the y/(a + y) equilibrium curve or its metastable extrapolation at the temperature of transformation. Those areas of austenite appreciably farther removed from the growing ferrite, on the other hand, will be relatively unaltered in composition, especially at the earlier stages of transformation. Since rates of nucleation are considered to decrease exponentially with decreasing supersaturation,' the frequency with which ferrite nuclei appear at austenite-ferrite boundaries should be negligible in relation to that at which they form in other regions of the austenite. During this investigation, however, many groupings of ferrite crystals have been found which appear to have resulted from the nucleation of ferrite at austenite-ferrite boundaries. This phenomenon has been given the name of sympathetic 71.1tcleation. A number of micrographs of morphological configurations caused by sympathetic nucleation will be presented, after which an explanation for this reaction will be proposed in terms of current nucleation theory. Some of the structures to be considered are composed of bainite, an aggregate of ferrite and carbide, rather than of ferrite. Since ferrite and bainite differ only in that bainite forms under conditions which result in the nucleation of carbides behind the advancing austenite-ferrite boundaries,' it will usually be unnecessary, for the purpose of this paper, to distinguish between the two reaction products. All studies were performed on an electric furnace steel (obtained from the Vanadium Alloy Steel Co.) containing 0.29 pct C, 0.76 pct Mn, 0.25 pct Si, 0.005 pct P, and 0.007 pct S. The alloy was cast as a 150 Ib, 7x7 in. cross section ingot and forged into bars 2x2 in. in cross section. These bars were homogenized for 48 hr at 1250°C in an Endo-Gas atmosphere. The depth to which decarburization penetrated during this heat treatment was determined by chemical and microscopic analyses and the affected metal was removed by machining. Specimens for isothermal transformation studies were cut from the remaining material; most of these specimens were 1/2x1/4X1/16 in., though some with a thickness of 1/32 in. were prepared for use at the shorter reaction times and lower reaction temperatures. Specimens were austenitized for 30 min at 1300°C, isothermally reacted for various times at temperatures ranging from 775" to 475 "C, and then quenched in iced water. The austenite grain sizes within individual specimens ranged from ASTM Nos. 1 through —4. A commercial heat-treating salt which was continuously deoxidized by an immersed graphite crucible served to minimize the loss of carbon during austenitizing; thick covers of powdered graphite and immersed graphite rods effectively prevented decarburization in the lead pots employed for the isothermal reaction treatments. The heat-treated specimens were sectioned and mounted in Bakelite. Following the completion of standard grinding and mechanical polishing procedures, the specimens were electrolytically polished with a Buehler-Waisman apparatus and etched in 2 pct nital. Experimental Results Rules of Evidence for Sympathetic Nucleation—On the basis of observations made on a single plane of polish, one precipitate crystal may be considered to have been sympathetically nucleated at the inter-phase boundary of another precipitate crystal when the following conditions are fulfilled: 1) The sympathetically nucleated crystal is not in contact with a grain boundary or a subboundary in the matrix phase. 2) The shape, size, and location of the crystal at whose boundary sympathetic nucleation occurred (hereafter termed the base crystal) and the crystal formed by sympathetic nucleation substantially pre-clude the possibility that the plane of polish em-ployed may have concealed the fact that both crys-tals actually nucleated at a grain boundary or a sub-boundary in the matrix phase.

In drilling operations, attention generally is given to hole angles rather than to changes of angle, in spite of the fact that the latter are responsible for drilling and production troubles. The paper presents means for specifying maximum permissible changes of hole angle to insure a trouble-free hole, using a minimum amount of surveys. It is expected that the paper will result in a decrease of drilling costs, not only by avoiding troubles, but also by removing the fear of such troubles. SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS Excessive dog-legs result in such troubles as fatigue failures of drill pipe, fatigue failures of drill-collar connections, worn tool joints and drill pipe, key seats, grooved casing, etc. Most of these detrimental effects greatly increase with the amount of tension to which drill pipe is subjected in the dog-leg. Therefore, the closer a dog-leg is to the total anticipated depth, the greater becomes its acceptable severity. Very large collar-to-hole clearances will cause fatigue of drill-collar connections and shorten their life, even in very mild dog-legs. Another finding regarding fatiguing of collar connections in dog-legs is that rotating with the bit off bottom sometimes may be worse than drilling with the full weight of drill collars on the bit, mainly in highly inclined holes when the inclination decreases with depth in the dog-leg. Means are given for specifying maximum dog-legs compatible with trouble-free holes. An inexpensive technique proposed is to take inclinometer or directional surveys far apart; then, if an excessive dog-leg is detected in some interval, intermediate close-spaced surveys are run in this interval. The application of the findings should result in a decrease of drilling costs, not only by avoiding troubles, but mainly by removing the fear of such troubles. The result would be much more frequent drilling with heavy weights on bit, regardless of hole deviation. Because of errors inherent to their use, presently available surveys are not very suitable for detecting dog-legs. There is a need for instruments especially adapted to dog-leg surveys. Crooked hole drilling rules should fall into two distinct categories—(1) those whose purpose is to bottom the hole as desired, and (2) those whose purpose is to insure a trouble-free hole. Three kinds of first-category rules in usage today are as follows. 1. A means to bottom the hole as desired is to prevent the bottom of the hole from being horizontally too far from the surface location; this may be achieved by keeping the hole inclination below some maximum permissible value such as, for instance, 5. 2. Another means to achieve the same goal is to limit the rate at which the inclination is allowed to increase with depth. A frequently used rate is 1/1,000 ft. In other words, a maximum deviation of l° is allowed at 1,000 ft, 2 at 2,000 ft, 3 at 3,000 ft, etc. 3. Whenever application of the first two means precludes carrying the full weight on bit required for most economical drilling, then the best course is to take advantage of the natural tendency of the hole to drift updip, displace the surface location accordingly and impose a target area within which the hole should be bottomed. This method has already been successfully applied,'.' and its usage probably will become more frequent in the future. Means for calculating the amount of necessary surface location displacement are avail-able.3'5'6 If in high-dip formations the full weight on bit should result in unreasonably great deviations, the situation could be remedied by increasing the size of collars and (if needed) the size of both hole and collars,351 or in some cases by using several stabilizers. Rules which would fall into the second category (i.e., rules whose purpose is to insure a trouble-free hole) are seldom specified today. It is vaguely believed that following Rules 1 and 2 of the first category will automatically prevent troubles. Actually, this is not true. If at some depth the only specified rule is that the hole inclination must be less than 4", the hole may be lost if the deviation suddenly drops from 4 to 2, or if the direction of the drift changes, etc. Rule 3 of the first category is generally used in conjunction with a rule belonging to the second category, namely, that the hole curvature' (dog-leg severity) must not exceed the arbitrarily chosen value of 1½ /100 ft. Moreover, when using this rule, the industry is not clear over what depth intervals the hole curvature should be measured. All this results in a frequent fear

The velocity and attenuation of elastic waves in sandstones were measured as a function of both pressure and fluid saturation. A large change occurs in these quantities if water is added and the rock is not compressed, but the change is small if the rock is subjected to a large overburden pressure. Measurements were made by vibrating cylindrical samples in both the extensional and torsional modes at frequencies up to 30,000 cycles/sec. Formulas were derived which enable the attenuation of dilatational waves in dry rocks to be deduced from the data. Similar experimental methods were used to investigate the properties of unconsolidated sands. Velocities were found to vary with the 1/4 power of the overburden pressure and attenuations to decrease with the 1/6 power. The effects of grain size, amplitude and fluid saturation were studied. Formulas by which the effects produced by a jacket around the sample may be calculated were derived. The practical application of these results to formation valuation is discussed. INTRODUCTION The attenuation of elastic waves in the earth has been of interest to the seismologist and geophysicist for many years, but only recently to the petroleum engineer. Engineering interest has been brought about by the success of velocity logging devices, for it is possible by modification of these instruments to measure the attenuation of sound waves in addition to their velocity and, hence, deduce the mobility of formation fluids as well as the porosities of the rocks which contain them. The main problem is to decide whether field measurements can be made with sufficient accuracy to be of practical use. This problem can only be solved after we know the magnitude of the attenuations which are typical of the earth at various depths. The logarithmic decrement of a fluid-saturated rock is the sum of a "sloshing" decrement and a "jostling" decrement, the former caused by the mobility of the fluid contained within the rock and the latter by the granular framework of the rock. Sloshing decrements can be calculated' using Biot's theory, but the jostling losses are less well understood. The present paper reports an experimental investigation of jostling losses in consolidated and uncon- solidated sands, particularly with respect to the effect of overburden pressure and fluid saturation. Born' showed that the decrement of a sandstone may increase dramatically when only a few per cent by weight of distilled water is added, and that the additional loss is proportional to the frequency of vibration. His measurements were made with no compressive stress on the framework of the rock. M. Gondouin3 investigated similar phenomena for fluid-saturated plasters but also did not compress the samples. In the present paper it is shown that compression of the framework reduces this effect, so that at depth the jostling decrement of a sandstone may be expected to be almost independent of fluid saturation and frequency. Decrements for many sedimentary rocks have been given by Volarovich,4 but all for the state of zero overburden pressure. Anomalously low velocities have been logged in shallow unconsolidated gas sands. Results of the present investigation confirm that these velocities are not caused by correspondingly high attenuations, because the jostling decrement in a packing of sand grains is small and much less than in a consolidated sandstone at the same depth. Velocities in sands have been measured by Tsareva5 and by Hardin6 as a function of pressure, but the corresponding decrements do not appear to have been measured previously. The widely used "resonant bar method" of measuring velocities and decrements was employed. Comments on variations of this technique have recently been published by McSkimmin.7 The main novelty of the present technique was the application of pressure to the samples. It was found possible to do this by placing the apparatus inside a pressure vessel, provided the conditions leading to large additional losses were avoided. These conditions are discussed below. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Cylindrical samples were caused to vibrate in both the extensional and torsional mode of vibration and the amplitude of vibration was measured as a function of frequency in the neighborhood of a resonant frequency. The resonant frequency, fr, is related to the corresponding elastic modulus by the formulas where E and N are Young's modulus and the modulus of rigidity, p is the density of the sample, and A the wavelength of the vibration.

This paper compares the fracture behavior of tungsten rods in three conditions: recrystallized. recovered, and wrought. Notched specimens suhjected to a 50 in.-lb impact load showed ductile-brittle transitions at 700, 4.90°, and 440°C, respectinely. The recrystallized material had an equiaxed pain structure and jracbred by simple cleavage from a grain boundary source at all temperatures up to 700°C. The wrought and recovered material had an elongated fibrous structure and at low temperatures fractured by cleavage originating from the notch. As the transition temperature was approached cleavage was preceeded by more and more intergvanular splitting which deflected the crack front into planes parallel to the tensile axis. The enhanced toughness of wrought and recovered tungsten was attributed both to its inability to initiate cleavage because no pain boundaries were suitably oriented perpendicular to the tensile stress and to its inability to maintain cleavage because of intergranular splitting ahead of the crack. It has been appreciated for a long time in a qualitative manner that the room-temperature brittleness of fully recrystallized tungsten may be alleviated by working the material at relatively low temperatures.' More recently this difference in mechanical behavior between wrought and recrystallized tungsten has been examined quantitatively by measurement of the tensile properties as a function of temperature. In these experiments brittleness has been expressed in terms of ductility or reduction in cross-sectional area upon tensile fracture or in terms of the bend radius before fracture under bending.' This work has shown the existence of a fairly sharp transition from brittle to ductile behavior with an increase in temperature. The ductile-brittle transition temperature for recrystallized material is approximately 200°C higher than for wrought material. An increase in strain rate, small additions of impurity,' or an increase in grain size4 shift the respective transition temperatures to higher values, but the difference between them remains approximately the same at 200°C. A number of explanations for this embrittlement by recrystallization have been given. It has been blamed either on the concentration of impurity at the grain boundaries, the increase in grain size, or the change in texture which occurs upon recrystallization. The present paper examines the effect of different heat treatments on the notch-impact behavior of commercial powder-metallurgy tungsten rods. The change in the ductile-brittle transition temperature for this method of loading and the fracture mode has been related to the different mi-crostructures produced by heat treatment. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Commercial swaged powder-metallurgy tungsten rods 1-3/8 in. in length and 1/8 in. in diameter were machined to introduce a sharp V notch 0.030 in. deep. To change the microstructure from that of the as-received wrought material some of the specimens were subjected to an anneal in nitrogen either at 1300° or 1400°C for 8 hr or at 1600° or 2000°C for 1/2 hr. The notched rods were then placed in a miniature Charpy-type impact machine and struck at their midpoint (opposite the notch) with a hammer designed to deliver 50 in.-lbs of energy. The strain rate at the base of the notch was estimated to be approximately 100 sec-1 at the instant of impact. The specimens were heated in situ to the desired impact temperature. The microstructures produced by the various anneals were studied by both X-ray diffraction and metallographic techniques. Fig. 1 reproduces the microstructures observed metallographically following a 10-sec electroetch in a 10 pct KOH solution. Fig. l(a) shows the elongated fibrous grain structure of the as-received material. Following the anneal at 1300" or 1400°C the grain structure was still elongated as shown in Fig. l(b) but the etch pits delineated dense polygonized dislocation arrays within many of the grains. Occasionally a relatively dislocation-free recrystallized grain was found growing into the matrix. The anneals at 1600° and 2000°C resulted in complete recrystallization and some grain growth. The grains produced at 1600°C were still slightly elongated as shown in Fig. l(c) whereas the anneal at 2000°C produced equiaxed grains. The changes in grain size produced the expected changes in the X-ray back-reflection patterns; there was no indication either in the as-received material or the annealed material of any preferred orientation. RESULTS a) Impact Behavior. Fig. 2 reproduces the ductile-brittle transition curves measured in the manner described in the previous section. The mechanism of failure under a drill bit is still improperly understood in spite of several investigations of the subject. Generally, the cratering process under static loading conditions is considered to be similar to that achieved dynamically by impact. This paper attempts to indicate that, although the sequence of fracturing in the two cases appear to be identical, at least some dissimilarities exist. For example, the width-to-depth ratios of the craters vary to some extent, and the amount of energy consumed per unit of volume of craters is unequal for the two different loading conditions. Prevalent rock penetration processes are dominated by methods utilizing mechanical attack on rock. It is, therefore, generally accepted that a better comprehension of the mechanism of rock failure under a wedge would prove beneficial towards improving present drilling techniques. Several attempts have been made in recent years to explain how craters are formed under a drill bit, but the mechanism of failure beneath a bit is still improperly understood. 1-11 Most investigators, to date, have inferred the sequence of events occurring during crater formation from analyses of force-time diagrams,1"6 from theoretical considerations,7 or from a study of the configurations of final craters.8-l0 These analyses have led to the presentation of widely divergent models for rock failure beneath a drill bit, ranging from brittle to viscoelastic. The cratering process under dynamic loading commonly is regarded as being similar to that obtained under gradually applied, or 'static', loads. But the effect of rate of loading on the action of a bit is still disputed. Some investigators11-12 maintain that there should be no such effects, whereas others have demonstrated experimentally that these exist.13-17' The purpose of the investigation reported in this paper was to examine petrographically the damage done to rock under the action of a chisel-shaped wedge, both with 'static' and dynamic loading, and to determine if rate-of-loading effects could be detected. Significant quantitative differences in crater volumes and depths were found to exist for a given consumption of energy. On the basis of this data, an attempt was made to indicate some of the rheological properties that a proposed model should possess. All the work reported herein was conducted at atmospheric pressures. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE Two types of rocks were employed for most of the experiments reported in this paper, viz. Bedford (Indiana) limestone and Vermont marble. The mechanical properties of these rocks are given in Appendix A. Actually two types of Vermont marble were used, but since no marked difference could be discerned between the two varieties (as seen in Fig. 10) the data was used collectively for the analysis. Stronger rocks were not employed owing to difficulty in generation of observable craters without damage to the equipment. Six-in. diam cores were drilled from the rock samples and embedded in 8-in, diam steel pipe with 3/8-in. wall thickness, using hydrostone to fill the annulus between the core and the pipe. This procedure was adopted to confine the rock specimen so that fractures would not propagate to the edges of the cores. This goal was achieved satisfactorily for these tests because no cracks were observed to extend into the medium surrounding the rock, even when craters were formed only 1 in. from the rock core periphery. Three to four craters were formed on a core face, because the rock damage from any one crater generally did not appear to extend into the others. Whenever, interference between damaged areas around adjacent craters was suspected, the data was rejected for purposes of the analysis. The limestone and marble samples were tested with a 60-degree, wedge-shaped bit, 1 5/8-in. in length, made of tool steel. The bit shank had two SR-4 type electrical resistance strain gages, mounted axially, to record the force-time history during the loading operation. The static indentation tests were conducted using a 50-ton capacity press fitted with an adapter for drill bit attachment. See Fig. 1. The force exerted by the bit at any instant was measured with strain gages affixed to the bit shank. An aluminum cantilever, with two SR-4 strain gages mounted near its clamped end, was employed to measure bit displacement. Both sets of gages were included in Wheatstone bridge circuits,

A full scale field experiment on cathodic protection of casing answers questions concerning (1) the proper criteria for determining current requirments, (2) the amount of protection provided by different currents, and (3) the transfer of current at the base of the surface pipe. Three dry holes in the Trico pool in Rooks County, Kans., were selected for cathodic protection tests. The three holes were in an area where casing failures opposite the Dakota water sand often accur in less than a year. Examination of the electric togs showed the wells to be similar to other wells in the field where casing in four of seven producing wells has failed. The three holes were cleaned out and cased with 75 joints of new 51/2-in. 14-tb J-55. Each joint was visually inspected and marked before it as run. The casing was bull plugged and floated in the hole 50 that the inside might remain dry and free of excessive attack. Also, if a leak occurred, a pressure increase could be observed on gawge at the surface. Extensive testing was done, including potential profiles, log current-potentid curves and electrode measurements from both surface and downhole connections. Based on these data, a current of 12 amps was applied to one well and 4 amps to mother. The third well was left to corrode. During the two-year period when the casing was in the ground, [he applied current was checked weekly, and reference electrode measurements were made about every two months. Three sets of casing potential profi1e.c were run. When the three strings were pulled, each joint was examined for type of scale formed, presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria, extent of corrosion nttnck and pit depth. Since the pipe was new when run, quantitative determination of the protection provided by current was possible. This is the first concrete field evidence to help resolve the many arguments about the proper method for selecting adequate current for cathodic protection of oilwell (-using. INTRODUCTION A casing string is run when a well is drilled. This pipe is supposed to protect this valuable "hole in the ground" for the life of the well. Often the casing does not last the life of the well; it is with these casing failures that this work is concerned. The cost of repairing a casing failure varies from field to field—from as much as a $30,000 per leak average in California to $5,000 per leak in Kansas. Additional costs other than actual repairs are also important. These include formation damage, lost production, etc. Casing damage caused by internal corrosion is important in some areas. Treatment normally consists of flushing inhibitor down the annulus, but further research is being done on control measures. The test described in this paper is concerned only with external corrosion. The problem of casing failure from external attack has appeared in several areas including western Kansas, California, Montana, Wyoming, Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi. Cathodic protection is currently being used in an attempt to control external corrosion. From reports in the NACE there are thousands of wells currently under cathodic protection. The quantity of current being applied ranges from 27 amps on some deep California wells to a few tenths of an amp being supplied from magnesium anodes on wells in Texas and Kansas. Considerable field and laboratory effort1,9,5,6 was exented on the problem of cathodic prctection of casing, and it became fairly obvious that this method could be used to protect wells. Early workers showed that current applied to a well distributed itself over the length of the casing and was not concentrated on the upper few hundred feet. Basic cathodic protection theory had shown that corrosion attack could be stopped by applying sufficient current. The problem resolved itself, then, into one of trying to decide just how much current was necessary. Various criteria were utilized in installing the many existing cathodic protection installations. These methods included the following. 1. Applying sufficient current to remove the anodic slope as shown by the potential profile." 7. Applying enough current to maintain all areas of the casing at a pipe-to-soil potential of .85 v.' 3. Applying the current indicated by a log current-potential (or E log I) curve." 4. Supplying the current necessary to shift the pipe to-soil potential .3 v." 5. Applying 2 or 3 milliamps of current per sq ft of casing."

ARTICLE I Name and Object Sec. 1. This Division shall be known as the Institute of Metals Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. Sec. 2. The object of the Division shall be to furnish a medium of cooperation between those interested in the field of physical metallurgy; that is, the nature, structure, alloying, fabrication, heat treatment, properties and uses of metals; to represent the AIME insofar as physical metallurgy is concerned, within the rights given in AIME Bylaw, Article XI, Sec. 2, and not inconsistent with the Constitution and Bylaws of the AIME; to hold meetings for the discussion of physical metallurgy; to stimulate the writing, publication, presentation and discussion of papers of high quality on physical metallurgy; to accept or reject papers for presentation before meetings of the Division. ARTICLE II Members Sec. 1. Any member of the AIME of any class and in good standing may become a member of this Division upon registering in writing a desire to do so, but without additional dues. Sec. 2. Any member not in good standing in the AIME shall forfeit his privileges in the Division. ARTICLE III Funds Sec. 1. The expenditure of the funds received by the Division shall be authorized by the Executive Committee of the Division. ARTICLE IV Meetings Sec. 1. The Division shall meet at the same time and place as the annual meeting of the AIME, and at such other times and places as may be determined by the Executive Committee subject to the approval of the Board of Directors of the AIME. Sec. 2. The annual business meeting shall be held within a few days before or after the annual business meeting of the AIME. Sec. 3. At a meeting of the Division, for which notice has been sent to the members of the Division through the regular mail or by publication in the Journal of Metals at least one month in advance, a business meeting may be convened by order of the Executive Committee and any routine business transacted not inconsistent with these Bylaws or with the Constitution or Bylaws of the AIME. Sec. 4. For the transaction of business, the presence of a quorum of not less than 25 members of the Division shall be necessary. ARTICLE V Officers and Government Sec. 1. The officers of the Division shall consist of a Chairman, a Senior Vice-Chairman, a Vice-Chair -man, a Secretary and a Treasurer. The office of Secretary and Treasurer may be combined in one person, if desired by the Executive Committee. Sec. 2. The government of the affairs of the Division shall rest in an Executive Committee, insofar as is consistent with the Bylaws of the Division and the Constitution and Bylaws of the AIME. Sec. 3. The Executive Committee shall consist of the Chairman, Senior Vice-Chairman, Vice-Chairman, past Chairman, Secretary, and nine members, all of whom shall be nominated and elected as provided hereafter in Article VII. Sec. 4. The Chairman, Senior Vice-Chairman and Vice-Chairman shall serve for one year each, or until their successors are elected. Each member of the Executive Committee shall serve three years. The Chairman shall remain a voting member of the Executive Committee for one year after his term as Chairman. Sec. 5. The Treasurer of the Division shall be invited to meet with the Executive Committee, but without ex-officio right to vote. He shall be appointed annually by the Executive Committee, from the membership of the Executive Committee or otherwise. Sec. 6. The annual term of office for officers of the Division shall start at the close of the Annual Meeting of the Institute and shall terminate at the close of the next Annual Meeting. ARTICLE VI Committees Sec. 1. There shall be standing committees as follows: Programs Committee. Finance Committee, Membership Committee, Annual Lecture Committee, Technical Publications Committee, Mathewson Gold Medal Committee, Nominating Committee, Education Committee and such other Committees as the Executive Committee may authorize. Sec. 2. It shall be the duty of the Programs Committee to secure the presentation of papers of appropriate character at meetings of the Division. Sec. 3. It shall be the duty of the Finance Committee to inquire into and examine the financial condition of the Division and to consider proper means of increasing its revenue and limiting its expenses. The Finance Committee shall audit the accounts of the Division and report to the Executive Committee prior to the Annual Meeting of the Division. It shall render a budget to the Executive Committee estimating receipts and expenses for the ensuing year so that action can be taken on same at the first meeting following the Annual Meeting.

The effect of alkali sulfates in promoting the sul-fation of nickel and copper in a bulk sulfide flota -tion concentrate by fluidized bed roasting has been studied in the laboratory, and it was shown that the various alkali sulfates promote sulfation to approximately the same extent. The sulfation of a mixture of synthetically prepared iron and nickel oxide and of nickel ferrite has also been studied. Nickel sulfation was promoted by high ratios of Fe:Ni and by the presence of sodium sulfate. THE work described in this paper was a continuation of earlier studies into the role of alkali sulfates in promoting the sulfation roasting of nickel sulfides1,2 in an endeavor to determine how the system was affected by the presence of compounds of iron and copper. The earlier work1 showed that, in the sulfation of NiO at 680°C, the reaction was limited by the formation of an impermeable film of nickel sulfate on the oxide surface. The relative effect of the various alkali sulfates in promoting nickel sulfation varied in the order: Li > Na >Cs > Rb > K A study of alkali sulfate/ nickel sulfate interactions at high temperatures showed that the promoting action was due to the fact that the nickel sulfate product layer sintered and agglomerated only when the more active additives were present. This resulted in the formation of discontinuities in the nickel sulfate layer so that diffusion of the sulfating gases to the NiO surface was no longer impeded and the reaction could proceed to completion. A similar explanation was used for the observation that sodium and lithium sulfates promote the oxidation of NiS to NiO at temperatures below 750°C since small amounts of nickel sulfate were formed during oxidation.2 It was of interest to study the effect of alkali sulfates on the sulfate roasting of a sulfide flotation concentrate which is typical of material treated commercially. In order to control temperature it is essential to roast sulfides in a fluidized bed and this technique was therefore used, although the batchwise operation of a small-scale laboratory reactor does not reproduce all conditions which prevail in full-scale continuous plant. The results obtained are therefore only comparative, and cannot be used for predicting the optimum conditions for metal extraction. The sulfation of synthetically prepared mixed oxides of nickel + copper and nickel + iron and of nickel ferrite was also studied to evaluate the relative effects of alkali sulfates with more complex systems. SULFATION ROASTING OF A SULFIDE FLOTATION CONCENTRATE The bulk sulfide flotation concentrate used in this work contained 7.92 pct Ni, 1.74 pct Cu, 35.66 pct Fe, and 31.28 pct S. The sulfide minerals present in order of abundance were pyrrhotite FeS, pyrite FeS2, pentlandite (FeNi)S, and chalcopyrite CuFeS2. Two samples described as coarse and fine were used. The coarse sample, which was a flotation concentrate (58 pct plus 300 mesh), was ground to 100 pct minus 350 mesh to produce the fine sample. Before roasting, the sample of sulfide concentrate was agglomerated by wetting witli a solution of the alkali sulfate (or water), thoroughly mixing, and drying at 110°C. This gave a cake which was gently crushed and screened, the -18 +100 mesh fraction being used for fluidized bed roasting. A similar-size fraction had been used by the authors in pilot plant work with a 4-in.-diam fluidized bed reactor.' In this work it was found that the molar ratio of additive to the total iron + nickel + copper content of the sulfide sample should be adjusted to a value of approximately 0.06, as this was the optimum amount necessary for nickel sulfation. Experimental. The fluidized bed reactor consisted of a quartz tube approximately 60 cm long and 30 mm in diameter resting in a vertical tube furnace. The sulfide bed (30 g) was supported on a bed of -4 +12 mesh quartz particles 3 cm high, which rested on a sintered quartz disc welded to the tube. The temperature of the furnace was controlled with a variable transformer to give a final bed temperature of 680°C. The bed was fluidized with air or mixtures of air + 10 pct v/v SO2, at a total apparent gas velocity of 60 to 65 cm per sec at 680°C. The SO2 was introduced into the fluidizing air stream only when the oxidation of the sulfides was completed. At the end of the roasting period the calcine was leached with boiling water and the

AT Tahawus, N. Y., National Lead Co. operates the MacIntyre development. Here the world's largest titanium mine produces 5200 long tons of ore per day and pours 8000 long tons of waste rock over its dumps. Concentrated ilmenite is sent by rail to National Lead Co. pigment plants, and a second product, magnetite, is sold to steel producers in raw form or is agglomerated and shipped as sinter. Several earlier attempts had been made to produce iron from the deposits, which have been known since 1826. These attempts failed, chiefly because of titanium impurity. In 1941 the present owners reestablished the operation for production of war-scarce ilmenite, and the impurity became the main product. The Ore: The MacIntyre ore zone is about 2400 ft long and 800 ft wide in horizontal measurements. Ore outcrops were found on the northwest side of Sanford Hill, 450 ft above Sanford Lake and 2500 ft southeast. The zone dips at about 45" toward the lake and plunges to the southwest. The ore minerals, ilmenite and magnetite, are unevenly distributed in bands roughly parallel to the long axis of the ore zone and are interspersed with bands and horses of waste. Hanging wall ores are fine grained and grade from rich ore to waste rock or gabbro. Footwall ores are coarse grained and are almost entirely ilmenite and magnetite. The foot-wall waste rock, anorthosite, is the common country rock. Several faults cut the ore zone. These faults have no great displacement but do contribute to the great physical variations in ore rock and surrounding waste. The Mine: The MacIntyre mine is an open pit operation, with benches at 35-ft intervals. The lowest bench is now 54 ft below lake level. Loading equipment consists of three electric-powered shovels (a P & H model 1400 with 4-yd dipper and two Bucyrus-Erie models 85-B with 2%-yd dippers) and one diesel-powered shovel (a Northwest model 80D with 2%-yd dipper). Ore and waste are transported to a 48x60-in. jaw crusher in ten 22-ton Euclid trucks with 300-hp diesel engines. Ordinarily the two Bucyrus-Erie 2 % -yd shovels load ore into a fleet of three or four trucks. This combination works two 8-hr shifts per day, moving 5200 long tons of ore to the crusher and removing a small portion of the waste rock. The P & H model 1400 shovel, with a fleet of four trucks, loads waste on three shifts per day. The mine operates on a 5-day week, with a small maintenance crew working Saturday. Oversize rock is broken by a dropball handled by an Osgood model 825 rubber-mounted crane.' Ore and waste are broken by drilling and blasting 9-in. diam vertical holes behind the benches. Bucyrus-Erie 42-T churn drills are used to drill the holes, which are extended 4 ft below the bench level on which the broken rock will fall. Drilling and Blasting History: In its early years the mine was equipped with Bucyrus-Erie 29-T churn drills, which drilled 6-in. holes. To keep up with production requirements the hole diameter was soon increased to 9 in., and by 1950 the three 42-T drills now in use had been acquired. Early blasting experiments with different kinds and grades of explosive led to adoption of 90 pct straight gelatin dynamite as standard. It was recognized that this explosive was expensive, and from the start of operations until 1950 extensive experiments were made using blasting agents of the ammonium nitrate family. Results were recorded as uniformly poor, with great build-up of oversize rock. The expense of these experiments, and the discouraging results, caused the abandonment of any expectation of breaking MacIntyre rock with anything but 90 pct straight gelatin dynamite. Further standardization led to 9-in. well drillhole spacings set at 16 ft in ore and 18 ft in waste, exceptions being permitted only for unusual conditions. The hole burdens were theoretically about 22 ft. Due to the extreme back-slope of bench faces, caused by blasting with heavy charges of dynamite, actual burdens were commonly well over 30 ft. Lack of precise control resulted in many holes having a burden as light as 15 ft. General practice was to stem 6 or 7 ft of hole with magnetite concentrate, the amount of stemming being left to the discretion of the pit foreman.
