The creep properties of metals have assumed increasing importance in recent years and many investigations have been made on various phases of the problem. In the past year the annual lectures of the Institute of Metals Division1 and the Iron and Steel Division2 were concerned with this subject, and are excellent reviews. For many years the creep properties of lead and lead alloys have been investigated at the Central Research Laboratories of the American Smelting and Refining Co., and it is hoped that the present paper will contribute knowledge of some of the factors that influence creep. Lead, being a metal that recrys-tallizes readily at room temperature, is an excellent material upon which to investigate creep phenomena because of the simplicity of the apparatus needed, and it might be expected that results would apply to some extent to elevated-temperature tests of other metals. Material The creep tests of this investigation were all made on high-purity lead (99.9998+ Pb) in which the only impurity that could be detected by spectrographic and chemical means was approximately 0.0001 per cent Fe. Flat strips, 0.750 in. wide by 0. 100 in. thick, were prepared by extruding 2-in. dia. cast billets at a temperature of 250°C. This gave a material of 2 to 3 mm. average grain size with a tensile strength of j.400 lb. per sq. in. when tested at a straining rate of 5 per cent per minute. With this extremely soft material, great care was necessary in handling the specimens, to avoid distortion and subsequent recrystallization. The creep tests at 30°C. were conducted in a constant-temperature room, specially built for the purpose in the basement of an office building in which there was no moving machinery, and no vibration was detectable under the most severe conditions of shock in the adjacent surroundings. The room was well insulated and heated electrically, control being by means of a de Khotinsky regulator operating a relay. Maximum temperature variation over a period of several years has been ± 1/2°C. Specimens of the extruded strip, 16 in. long, were used for test purposes with no reduced gauge section, thus eliminating any distortion due to machining. The method of clamping and supporting the specimens is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. The gauge marker for the measurement of extension consisted of an aluminum strip, 0.050 in. thick by 0.75 in. wide, one end of which was ground and sanded to a precise knife-edge and fastened to the specimen by suitable pins. After the strip was fastened in place a fine scratch was inscribed just below the knife-edge by means of a sharp teasing needle. Just below this gauge scratch a short vertical mark was made so that the same point could be located and read each time. MUCH has been published on the general subject of metal mine ventilation but, so far as I can discover, few specific data on selection of fan equipment to meet the requirements of a given mine ventilation problem are available. This article is intended to point out some of the more important considerations which influence the selection of such equipment. It will be assumed that the mine operator is able to determine the quantity of air which is necessary in the various parts of his mine to produce the required results and the pressure in inches water gage needed to circulate this quantity of air through the mine. There may be instances in which this assumption is not justified, but the fact remains that, with proper engineering talent, these data can be approximated sufficiently close for practical purposes.

Prior to 1916, thickening was an art, and any accurate decision as to what size of machine to install to handle a given tonnage of a specific ore must have been one of those intuitive conclusions, based on both intimate and extensive acquaintance with thickners and ore pulps. Then in 1916 "knowledge of acquaintance," became "knowledge about" with the publication of the Coe and Clevenger paper.' The unit operation of thickening had graduated to the status of an engineering science. The fundamental similitude relationships for the two major phases of the operation were defined so clearly that batch tests on models as small as liter cylinders could serve to specify protypes as large as 325 ft in diameter.

Cobalt sulfate solutions containing ammonium acetate and chloroplatinic acid were reduced by hydrogen in a pyrex-glass lined autoclave in the temperature range of 170o to 232°C and hydrogen partial pressure range of 115 to 830 psia. The reduction rate was directly proportional to the hydrogen partial pressure and surface area of the pyrex glass and was independent of the quantity of chloroplatinic acid added initially. Experiments involving the variation of the relative concentration of ammonium acetate indicated that the reducible cobalt complex was probably the diacetate complex of cobalt, Co(AC)4H20, or a new mononcetate complex Co Ac, which was in solubility equilibrium with a pink precipitate of CO(AC)-4HzO. THE reaction in which a metal is dissolved by an acid to produce gaseous hydrogen and a salt solution was discovered early in the history of chemistry. In 1859 Beketoff found experimentally that this reaction could be reversed; i.e., a salt solution could be reduced by gaseous hydrogen to produce a metal and an acid. A review of work done on this phenomenon since that time may be found elsewhere., The hydrogen reduction of a cobalt salt solution is facilitated by complexing the cobalt ion. An ammonia complex of cobalt has been reduced commercially in the recovery of cobalt metal. A new reducible complex of cobalt was discovered5 when it was found that a co-baltous sulfate solution containing ammonium acetate could be reduced by hydrogen at temperatures in the region of 200°C. When a cobalt sulfate-ammonium acetate solution was heated to a temperature below its normal boiling point, a violet color became apparent, indicating complex formation. The nature of this complex was investigated5 by the addition of NH4Ac to a CoSO4 solution maintained at 85o. During the first additions of NH, Ac, the pH of the solution remained fairly constant at about 5.85. However, as the ratio of NH,Ac to CoSO, approached two, the pH rose and then leveled off at about 6.05. The absorption spectra of a Co(Ac), solution and a CoSO,, NH Ac solution were obtained at 85°C and were compared and found to be the same. These findings suggested that the diacetate complex of cobalt, Co(Ac),.4H20, was formed at 85°C. When a cobalt sulfate-ammonium acetate solution was heated to a temperature above about 165o, a finely divided pink precipitate appeared. The X-ray diffraction pattern of this precipitate indicated that it was Co(Ac), - 4H,O. In addition, it was discovered that when chloroplatinic acid, H,PtCl;, was added initially to the cobalt sulfate-ammonium acetate solution, a faster reduction was obtained. The roles of the solution complex, pink precipitate and chloroplatinic acid in the reduction process were then investigated. APPARATUS The experimental work was carried out in a two-liter stainless-steel autoclave. Adetailed description of the autoclave and the auxiliary equipment used in maintaining constant temperature and pressure may be found elsewhere.= Because the stainless steel was corroded, and also because it acted as a hydrogena-tion catalyst, an all-glass liner was fabricated such that the solution came only into contact with flame-polished pyrex glass. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The solutions used in the experimental work were prepared by dissolving reagent grade chemicals in distilled water. Although variation of the brand of ammonium acetate appeared to have no effect on the experimental results, CoSO, 7H O from the J. T. Baker Chemical Co. of Phillipsburg, N. J.,was found to give faster reductions than that prepared by Allied Chemical and Dye Corp., N. Y. The former was used throughout the course of the experimental work and was weighed up at the outset of each experiment. The ammonium acetate was dissolved to form a 6M stock solution, which was stored under refrigeration. A 10 pct solution of chloroplatinic acid (J. T. Baker Chemical Co.) was diluted to a 1.15 x 1Q2 M stock solution, which was standardized by precipitation of K,PtCl, as outlined by Scott. The appropriate volume of the chloroplatinic acid, H,PtCl,, solution was pipetted into the clean, dry glass liner. Literature on the electrolysis of aluminum from cryolite melts and on the structure of these melts is surveyed critically. Data on density, freezing point, and other properties are reviewed. Theories of the electrolysis are examined in the light of these data. Two theories are presented which account equally well for the observations. ALTHOUGH the production of aluminum is a large-scale industrial process, consuming approximately 3 pet of all of the electric current generated in this country, the mechanism of the Hall Process remains a 70-year-old mystery. It is a remarkable fact that the aluminum industry, which was established largely through research and owes much of its growth to research, still employs as its basic process the one developed by Charles Martin Hall while he was still a young man working in a woodshed. There are, of course, modifications in detail and a tremendous expansion of the size of the units used, but basically the process employs carbon anodes and a carbon-lined iron vessel as a cathode for the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten salt. Of the almost infinite variety of salts available, the relatively minor Greenland mineral, cryolite, 3NaF.A1F3, is still the only one which gives good performance in the electrolysis. In the early days, the process was thought of as a simple one. The dissolved alumina dissociated and, during the electrolysis, the aluminum was carried to the cathode where it was discharged and collected in a pool of metal. The oxygen was carried to the carbon anode where it reacted to form primarily carbon dioxide together with some carbon monoxide. About the only virtue that can be claimed for this hypothesis is that of simplicity. The actual mechanisms must be tremendously more complex. This paper is devoted to a rather narrow part of the whole subject, namely, what ions are present in the bath, and by what mechanism the current is carried. The complexity of the literature on this system is demonstrated in Table I, which shows the ions postulated as being present during the process. This system is not easy to investigate. Cryolite melts at about 1000°C, so that all the investigations are at relatively high temperatures. Molten cryolite fumes in air, particularly if excess aluminum fluoride is present. The cryolite changes composition on heating at 1000°C, principally by reaction with moisture in the air, but apparently also by reaction with oxygen. Cryolite reacts with most of the customary materials of construction, and those that are not attacked by cryolite seem inevitably to react with molten aluminum. Graphite is the only common material that is inert to the electrolytic bath. Pure cryolite can be held in platinum. There is hope that some of the newer refractories will stand up in bath, and their development for this purpose would be a major advance in the field. The techniques to be discussed, then, are not the most advanced ones. Rather, they are examples of old standardized methods applied under difficult conditions. The principal methods that shed real light on the mechanism are density, electrical conductivity, freezing-point lowering, transport number, viscosity measurements, and reactivity of bath with carbon dioxide. The first measurement to be discussed is density. This procedure is relatively straightforward. A hollow platinum bob is suspended by fine platinum wire from an analytical balance into the melt being investigated. Density1-4 of the system sodium fluoride-aluminum fluoride is shown in Fig. 1. There is a maximum in the density near the cryolite composition, but actually the maximum is on the NaF-rich side of cryolite, close to the composition NaF - Na3AlF8. Density measurements are also useful in giving a clue to the nature of cryolite-alumina melts.1, 4 On the first addition of alumina, density decreases, Fig. 2, although the density of alumina, either solid or liquid, is higher than that of cryolite. These density results indicate that the systems are not simple. A great deal of effort has been spent in measuring the electrical conductivity of molten cryolite and of cryolite with various additives. Conductivity measurements are quite easy for fused salts that can be measured in a dip cell, but no successful dip cell has been made available yet for cryolite. Recourse is had

THE oxidation resistance of chromium and Fe-Cr alloys is increased by small additions of yttrium or other rare earth metals.1,2 In addition, the presence of the additives increases the resistance of these alloys to spalling of the external oxide above 1000°C. This ability to prevent spalling appears to be related to the formation of an internal oxide in alloys containing yttrium or the other rare earth metals. The internal oxide is found in the form of a filamentary growth concentrated in the grain boundaries of the unoxidized metal. In alloys containing yttrium this internal oxide was found to be either Y2O3 Or YCrO3.' In an earlier report,' the growth of the external oxide was found to be controlled by diffusion through the oxide layer. Thermal balance studies were used to establish the kinetics of external oxide formation. In this related study the rate of growth of the internal filamentary oxide has also been studied. The results obtained indicate that the growth of the internal oxide is also diffusion controlled. Internal oxidation appears to occur in at least two ways. Using copper alloys containing small amounts of silicon, Rhines 3 found that between 600" and 1000oC a subscale was formed which consisted of particles of silica dispersed in the metallic matrix. The conditions requisite to internal oxidation as suggested by Rhines are: 1) a solubility of oxygen in the alloy, 2) the ability of oxygen to diffuse at an appreciable rate into the alloy, 3) the possibility of the formation by the alloying element of an oxide more stable than the oxide of the host metal, and 4) a relatively low solubility of this oxide in the metal. These conditions are fulfilled for a number of other copper alloys.3-5 Furthermore, the relationship between the depth to which the internal oxide is formed and the oxidation time follows the simple parabolic law.6 The activation energy for copper containing small amounts of silicon, germanium, iron, or manganese as calculated from Rhines data6 is about 48 kcal per mole. In some cases the internal oxide is found segregated at the grain boundaries, especially near the the surface. Observations of this type of oxide formation have been reported by stead,7 Rhines,* and Lustman. The Evergreen mine, located at Apex, in the northern part of Gilpin county, Colorado, has opened a very peculiar and interesting copper-deposit, in which both bornite and chalcopyrite occur as rock-minerals. The country-rocks are crystalline schists cut by dikes of granu-lite and of pegmatite. At the Evergreen property they have been cut by a dike of a uew kind of eruptive rock, to which I have given the name " Evergreenite." The rock is composed of quartz, alkali feldspars, orthoclase and albite (often interlocked as microperthite), with augite of the ægirine variety and long needles of enstatite and diallage. For reasons stated below, I believe the dike to be of Tertiary age. It is easily traced on the surface of the ground, from a point in the bottom of Pine creek, about a mile below Apex, to the top of Nevada hill, 1,500 ft. beyond and 600 ft. above it. (See Fig. 1.) It varies from 3 to 12 ft. in width, and is bounded on both sides by contact-zones about 60 ft. wide, in which the crystalline schists have been changed into pseudo-quartzites or pseudo-gneisees, according to the injection of an excess of quartz or of feldspars through the special layer of the schists. The most interesting feature is the presence of the pyroxenes, which are always found, though in very variable proportions from place to place, in the layers of these metamorphosed crystalline schists. The dike has torn from its walls a large number of fragments of the wall-rock. It must have been in a viscous state when that happened, because these fragments of the wall-rock do not show any sign of resorption or of assimilation by the magma. In places they are so distinct and so numerous that the rock looks to the naked eye like a pseudo-breccia, of which, never-

calculation has been made of the standard deviations to be expected in the measurement of volume fractions by areal analysis, lineal analysis and four point-counting Procedures. The effect of experimetztal errors is not included. Our conclusion is that a point count using a two-dimensional grid will be the most efficient method of volume fraction analvsis providing the grid spacing IS coarse enough. The predicted standard deviation for such an analysis is shown to he in good agreement with that determined experimentally. A metallurgist wishing to estimate a structural property by means of quantitative metallography is often faced with a choice between several different procedures. In such a case, he will naturally wish to know: a) Which procedure is the most efficient in the sense of requiring the least effort for a given precision? b) For a given procedure, what are the conditions for maximum efficiency? c) Under these conditions, how many measurements are required to attain a given precision? It is our aim in this paper to provide at least partial answers to these queries as they relate to the estimation of volume fractions from measurements on a random two-dimensional section of an opaque specimen. The commonly used techniques1,2 for volume-fraction analyses are based on one or more of the following principles: i) For an areal or Delesse3 analysis: That the areal fraction of a three-dimensional feature intercepted by a random plane provides an unbiased estimate of the volume fraction of that feature. ii) For a lineal or Rosiwal4 analysis: That the fractional intercept on a line passing at random through a two-or three-dimensional feature provides an unbiased estimate of, respectively, the areal or volume fraction of that feature. iii) For a point-count analysis: That the fractional number of randomly or regularly dispersed points falling within the boundaries of a two-dimensional feature on a plane, or within the boundaries of a three-dimensional feature in a volume, provides an unbiased estimate of, respectively, the areal or volume fraction of that feature. The absence of bias referred to in these principles does not, of course, imply that the results of an analysis will be free of error, but only that the expected result is equal to the true one. Application of the foregoing principles provide the following six possible experimental procedures: a) An Areal Analysis—This involves the measurement with a planimeter (or other means) of the area of a constitutent intercepted by the plane of polish b) A Two-Dimensional Random Point Count—Apos-sible experimental procedure for this analysis is to superimpose a sheet of transparent graph paper on a micrograph, and then use a table of random numbers to select coordinates for the points. c) A Two-Dimensiotuzl Systematic Point Count-Similar to b) except that the points are distributed in a prescribed manner, usually at the corners of a lattice superimposed on a micrograph or the screen of a projection microscope. d)A Lineal Analysis—A measurement of the fractional line length intercepted. It is usually performed by traversing the specimen under the cross hairs of a microscope and recording the distance travelled in each constituent. e) 4 One-Dimensional Random-Point Count— This could be performed by traversing the specimen with stops at random intervals to identify the constituent then present under the cross hairs. f) A One-Dimensionul Systematic Point Count— Similar to e) except that the traverse is stopped at prescribed (usually equal) intervals. It will be noted that the point-counting procedures b) and c) can be regarded as methods of estimating the areal fraction. Similarly, e) and f) are indirect methods of making a lineal analysis. All of the six procedures described above involve at least one stage of sampling. Thus, quite apart from any experimental errors, there will always be a statistical uncertainty associated with the final results. It is with the calculation of this uncertainty that we will be concerned. To avoid unnecessary repetition, the statistical relationships that will be used in the calculations are collected together in the appendix. For a fuller discussion reference should be made to one of the many textbooks5,6 on statistics. For symbols relating to the specimen structure we will follow as far as possible the terminology used by Smith and Guttman.7

A graphical technique by which the operating points for a two-fan ventilation system can be represented as the intersection of the modified fan curves is described. In constructing the diagram, the air quantities associated with the fans are considered to be independent variables and used as the axes of a rectangular coordinate system. The diagram may include, in addition to the modified fan curves, contour lines for resistances, pressures, and air powers. Procedures for drawing the diagram are discussed and illustrated with an example of the ventilation system.

SAND and gravel are unconsolidated granular materials resulting from the natural disintegration of rocks. The two materials nearly al- ways occur together, variably proportioned in widely available de- posits. A commercial sand comprises the fine granular material, usually less than f in. in diameter (ASTM Designation C58-28), and gravel consists of the coarse, granular material larger than sand (ASTM Designation C125-46T). Gravel falls within the range of 1/4 in. and a top size usually of 3 ½ in. Chemical definition is impossible. Sand and gravel are always of secondary origin. They were formed from various massive rocks through the action of chemical and mechanical forces; then transported, abraded, washed, sorted, and classified by streams, glaciers, waves, or winds, to be redeposited in beds as they are found. Chief disintegrating forces in the reduction of rocks into granular particles were frost, rain, the dissolving action of acid and alkaline ground waters, the mechanical action of streams and waves, and the action of glaciers. Method of formation and deposition have imparted physical properties to sands and gravels that largely determine the commercial value of the materials for particular use and influence the manner of exploitation. In the early days of the commercial industry, purchasing specifications were relatively lenient but in. the past decade much more rigid quality requirements have had to be met for acceptance by all classes of purchasers. The trend to further severity in requirements is a challenge to the industry that commands full knowledge of the nature of raw materials at hand and skillful application of processing into commercial products. Like some other Pt-group metals palladium shows a low but considerable solid solubility of oxygen, which was found already from oxidation studies. The oxygen solid solubility of palladium in equilibrium with gaseous oxygen has been investigated at 900 - 1300 °C in oxygen (665 mbar) and air by gassing and analyzing polycrystalline samples. The 0-concentrations range from 40 to 90 ppm and decrease with rising temperature. The isobaric solubility can be represented by the least-squares fit log c0 = 0.5 log p02- 0.32 + 920/T (c0 in wt. ppm, p02 in mbar, T in K). The thermodynamic data of the exothermic solution reaction are calculated to ?H°= -17.6 kJ?mol-1 and ?S° -76.5 J?mol ? K-1. The behaviour of palladium in an oxygen atmosphere is characterized by the simultaneous reactions of the solution of oxygen in the metal and the formation and evaporation of volatile oxides besides the pure metal evaporation.

INDUSTRY has the right to expect the petroleum engineering schools to supply more than the minimum technical qualifications necessary to obtain or discharge the responsibilities of a particular job. The basic training, social and economic orientation, should go far beyond these minimum requirements. Petroleum engineering students should also be well grounded in the history of the oil business so that they may understand the industry's progress since the advent of the Drake well. Furthermore, according to P. H. Bohart, the schools "have a definite duty to help the students form a workable philosophy of life, which includes an appreciation of the service of science to mankind, and a belief in the obligation of the individual who enters a profession to exalt himself by continuing his studies and growth so that he may never cease making contributions to the advancement of science and industry."

BEFORE discussing the relation between air pre-heaters and waste-heat boilers in conjunction with the open-hearth furnace, it is necessary to have a clear idea about what a preheater can accomplish and what effect it has on the open-hearth furnace, especially from a thermal point of view. It is generally recognized now that the heating of the combustion air in the checker chambers of the open-hearth furnaces is not as efficient as it is-desirable to make it. It is also generally recognized that heating of the air in checker chambers of ordinary construction has its limitations. These limitations are mostly the .space occupied and the cost that would be involved if checker chambers were made larger than according to present practice. There are, however, other. reasons why checker chambers cannot give the highest possible air temperatures. Checker chambers are capable of heating air to very 'high temperatures by using waste gases of extremely high temperatures and, in fact, higher temperatures can be reached with checker chambers than with any other means available. The temperature to which we can heat, air, however, is limited very materially by -the temperature at which the air enters the checkers, be-cause of the fact that checker chambers, as at present constructed, are not efficient in heating air through a wide range of temperatures. In other words, if air in-stead of entering the checker chambers at atmospheric temperatures could enter at about 1000 to 1200 deg. F., the resultant air temperature at the top of the checker chambers would be materially increased. There are now on the market metallic air preheaters which are ex-tremely efficient for preheating air to about 1200 deg. F. Such heaters occupy very little space and can usually be installed at a relatively low cost.

FROM the very inception of the price-control experiment in the bituminous-coal industry, the problem of price differentials was of major importance. In fact, assuming that there will be no legal or Govern- mental obstacles to price control, the successful maintenance of the present or any other method designed to control bituminous-coal prices will depend upon the discovery of some satisfactory way to determine these differentials in price, among: individual mines and groups of mines.
