One Sunday night last month the phone rang and it was George Schenck from Penn State. How would we like to see a big scrap operation, he wanted to know. A few days later we were on the Connecticut turnpike headed for New Haven to visit a large scrap operation, M. Schiavone and Sons. George had a large clam basket in the back which he explained was for collecting trophies. The car shredder, he said, turns out some fancy metal shapes. In fact, they have gained a certain acceptance as objets d’art among George's friends and relatives. He thinks there may be a small, but possibly lucrative secondary market for shredded cars in the art world if the idea is imaginatively promoted. On the way to New Haven we received a briefing on the scrap industry. The scrap business grew from humble beginnings. Mostly it was started by a few immigrant Jews who collected junk in hand- or horse-drawn carts. The fortunate one might even have had a truck. Before proceeding further, we hasten to point out that the word "junk" is strictly taboo among scrap people, who prefer to refer to their industry as the "secondary metals industry."

A brief history of TiCI, production and purification is given. Chlorinator feed materials for the production of TiCI4 are classified. The thermodynamics and kinetics of Ticl4 production by chlorination of TiO2 are discussed. Problems encountered in the chlorination and purification steps are outlined in detail. MOST of the current processes for the production of titanium metal require the use of TiC14 as a source of titanium values. This material can only be produced by a dry chlorination process, since it is immediately hydrolyzed in the presence of water. When pure, the tetrachloride is a colorless liquid boiling at 136°C. It fumes readily in moist air, reacting immediately with the moisture to form TiO, and HC1. History The tetrachloride was prepared as early as 1826 by DumasL who chlorinated a red hot mixture of carbon and TiO,. Since then, numerous other mixtures have been used including rutile, ilmenite, beneficiated ilmenites, titanium pigment, slags, and the various titanium metalloids such as TiN, TiCN, TiOC, and TiS2. S2Cl2, phosgene, and CC14 have been substituted for chlorine and CO has been used in place of carbon.

THE Russellton preparation plant of Republic Steel Corp., located north of Pittsburgh, Pa., prepares 3 1/2x0-in. Thick-Freeport coal by means of a 13-ft 6-in. diam Chance cone and 16 No. 7 Deister tables. The plant feed ranges between 370 and 410 tons per hr, of which approximately 31 pct is ¼x0-in. size, and the plant reject ranges between 14 and 16 pct of the feed. The 3½xY4-in. washed coal, the cone product, is dewatered and desanded by a double-deck Parrish-type shaking screen 46 ft long and 7 ft wide. The 1¼x¼-in. portion is further dewatered by two 4x12-ft single-deck vibrating screens. The ¼x0-in. washed coal from the tables is distributed to three 54x70 in. Bird centrifuges. The dewatered centrifuge product is combined with the product of the de-watering screens prior to loading into railroad cars. During the early part of 1951 complaints were received from officials at Republic's coke ovens concerning the moisture content of Russellton washed coal. The records revealed that during the first half of 1951 the shipped washed coal moisture averaged

For zinc single crystals, xo = 3o, a surface coating raises both the cleavage and yield strengths over a large temperature range. The "brittle temperature," associated with slip after completion of twinning, does not coincide with the point of intersection of the flow and cleavage curves, which is associated with twinning. A surface film has no effect on the brittle temperature, while it lowers the intersection temperature some 20°. For crystals, yn = 83o, a coating decreases the cleavage strength, making it temperature independent, as well as increases the brittle temperature or its equivalent, the intersection temperature, 20°. These observations are described on the basis of a dislocation-pile-up-at-a-barrier model for brittle fracture; in crystals x,, = 3o the number and distribution of twins play a vital role. IN a recent investigation on the effects of solid environments on the brittle fracture of zinc single crystals,' it was demonstrated that the presence of a surface film changes the cleavage strength of these crystals, either increasing or decreasing it, depending on the crystal orientation. An increase in cleavage strength of some 43 per cent was found for coated crystals oriented x, — 3o K = 28",* while a decrease of 48 per cent was observed with crystals X" = y» — 83". Gold was discovered at the Haile mine in Lancaster County, South Carolina, in 1827 or 1828, and since that time the mine has been worked intermittently by both open-pit and underground methods until its forced closure in 1942 by World War II. Production figures are incomplete, especially for the early years, but the total gold produced is estimated to have been greater than 200,000 oz. Thus, the Haile mine has been the most productive gold mine in the eastern United States. The upper, residually enriched ores were relatively rich, but the bulk of the production has come from the mining of lower grade ores. General Geology The Haile mine is located in late Precambrian or early Paleozoic rocks of the Carolina slate belt at the edge of the Atlantic Coastal Plain [(Fig. 1)]. The metamorphic grade is lower greenschist facies and the rocks have been folded into a sequence of northeast-trending isoclinal folds. The gold is associated with siliceous, pyritic, and kaolinized felsic pyroclastic and tuffaceous rocks in an interbedded volcanic and volcanoclastic sequence of felsic to mafic tuffaceous rocks and argillaceous sediments [(Fig. 2)]. The ore bodies occur in two northeast trending zones approximately 500 m apart; each zone is 30-70 m wide and 600 m or more in length, with possible extensions to the east beneath the Coastal Plain sediments. Mineralogy. Gold in the Haile mine is always associated with siliceous and/or pyritic ores. The gold occurs in at least three states: As native gold as originally deposited; as residual gold derived from the breakdown of pyrite; and as gold included in pyrite. Major associated minerals in addition to quartz and pyrite are kaolinite, sericite, and iron oxides. Minor molybdenite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, copper sulfides, sphalerite, rutile, and topaz are also present. Petrology. The gold-bearing ore zones vary from highly siliceous rocks to pyritic massive sulfide lenses. This variation is most easily seen today along strike from the Haile pit to the Red Hill pit. Ore grade material still exposed in the wall of the Haile pit consists of a highly siliceous and very thinly bedded rock containing minor pyrite. Along strike, the character of the mineralization changes to pyritic massive sulfide lenses occurring interbedded with siliceous horizons at the Red Hill pit. The siliceous rocks vary from the thinly-bedded material as just described from the Haile pit to silicified fragmental-appearing rocks to totally recrystallized cherty rocks lacking any recognizable primary features. Scattered, apparently at random, throughout the very thinly-bedded and very fine-grained ore face of the Haile pit are seemingly anomalous silica-rich clasts or concretions up to 5 cm in diameter which will be discussed later in this paper. Alteration. One of the most striking features of the Haile deposit is the alteration mineral assemblage which is intimately associated with the siliceous and pyritic ores. This altered material has been intersected in drill core at depths greatly exceeding the modern weathering profile and is, therefore, of hydrothermal origin rather than from supergene processes. This "sericite," actually a fine-grained mixture of sericite, kaolinite, and quartz, can be shown to stratigraphically underlie the gold- quartz-pyrite zone, and is well exposed in the open pit just southeast of the Haile and Bumalo pits. Relict textures indicate that this highly altered material was originally a felsic ash flow. Other similar alteration zones have been found in outcrop and drill core underlying the remaining ore bodies. Thus each of the mineralized zones consists of two parts: A siliceous and/or pyritic gold-bearing ore zone which is stratigraphically underlain by a zone of high alumina minerals, in this case sericite and kaolinite along with variable amounts of quartz. A green chrome mica, presumably fuchsite, is present in trace amounts in the high alumina zone. Genesis An adequate model to explain the origin and distribution of the gold deposits in the Carolina slate belt is presently lacking. Worthington and Kiff1 suggested a volcanogenic origin for certain gold deposits in the North Carolina slate belt from the waning exhalations of felsic volcanic piles. They also pointed out that such an origin has similarities to many epithermal precious metal deposits located in more recent volcanic piles in the western United States. A further key to the understanding of the genesis of the gold mineralization at the Haile mine is the close association of the mineralization in siliceous and sulfidic horizons to the genetically related and stratigraphically underlying high alumina alteration. Such high-alumina alteration is common around felsic volcanic centers in the Carolina slate belt and the mineralogy as seen today consists of some combination of kaolinite, sericite, pyrophyllite, kyanite, andalusite or sillimanite depending on the local prevailing grade of metamorphism. Accompanying the high-alumina alteration are large quantities of pyrite and iron-oxide minerals as well as characteristic minor accessory minerals often including base metal sulfides, fluorine-bearing minerals (topaz, fluorite, apatite), titanium-bearing minerals (ilmenite, rutile),

INDEX TO TRANSACTIONS After a delay of many months, which is very much regretted, but which, it is hoped, will be one means of insuring a volume of accuracy where accuracy is very important, the Institute now has for distribution copies of the index of Volumes XXXVI to LV, inclusive. This is more than a mere index off names of authors and titles of papers. Every important topic under consideration by author or discusser is introduced under such key-word as will enable an engineer to locate the desired information with the minimum expenditure of time. This index sells for $5* in half morocco binding and $4*. in paper covers. With the index of Volumes II to XXXV (which sells for $5 in half morocco and $4 in paper covers), it forms a complete index of the first fifty-five volumes of the Institute's Transactions. These collective indexes are very valuable to members of the Institute, enabling them to look up matters in their own library; if they have the volumes to which the indexes refer, they can get the information at once, and, if not, they can readily determine whether or not a visit to a nearby public library is desirable.

The abundance and value of the tellurium minerals of Colorado is well known, but, as yet, few analyses have been made of them, and I offer these as a small contribution to the chemistry of these valuable ores. 1. Native Tellurium.—The specimens from which the analyses of this mineral were made are from the " John Jay" Mine, Boulder County, Colorado, where it occurs in quite large masses, though mixed with more or less silica and iron pyrites. It is usually a finegrained, tin-white mineral, but sometimes occurs in distorted, hexagonal prisms in cavities in the quartz. Before the blowpipe it gives the reactions for tellurium, sulphur and iron; by cupellation, it yields a small amount of gold. An analysis of a coarsely crystallized specilnen gave the following results : Specific gravity, 5.10.5. (written discussion *).-From a theo¬retical point of view the best method to maintain the cold junction at a constant temperature is by means of a pipe driven in the ground, to which the so-called cold-junction compensating leads are run, ;and of course there are many times and places where it can be successfully used. There are, however, several objections to this method. In the vicinity of any furnace there are apt to be underground flues for preheated air or gases, recuperators, water mains, etc., which will eliminate the probability of a constant temperature. These, of course, can be avoided by carrying the leads to distant locations known to be free, but this is not good practice because the so-called compensating leads have a rather high re¬sistance, which materially affects the accuracy of even the high resistance instruments, unless they are specially calibrated for it. Moreover, the cost of these long leads is almost prohibitive. A better way is to run short lengths of compensating leads to electrically heated constant¬ temperature boxes conveniently located near the furnace in a place that is of fairly uniform temperature. These boxes are on the market and can be procured at a cost that is approximately equal to the cost of 100 ft. of compensating leads. They can be connected to any power or lighting circuit and once set require very little care. One box will ac¬commodate a number of couples.

In evaluating uncertainty, experiments are usually performed repeatedly and then conclusions are drawn from the distribution of results. With the advent of high-speed electronic computers, it is possible to perform experiments using mathematical models constructed to simulate complex experiments or operations. Statistical methods are then applied to the results of the simulated experiments. This procedure forms the busis of this paper. Demonstrated is the need for properly accounting for uncertainty in petroleum engineering problems. How uncertainty affects solutions is evaluated in three example illustrations. The method used to evaluate uncertainty in petroleum engineering studies is the Monte Carlo simulation procedure.'-" INTRODUCTION The solution to most technical problems may be derived from interrelationships among several quantities called variables or parameters. There may be only a few variables or several hundred. Interrelationships among parameters may be explicit or implicit, well established or only approximate. Some variables that fully or partially depend on the magnitude of others are called dependent variables. Input variables for most practical problems are not precisely known; there is usually an uncertainty in their value. The degree of uncertainty may vary from one variable to another. Variables that are known accurately are called determinates.' For instance, the gravity of crude obtained from a particular pool may be known precisely, and therefore is a determinate. The degree of precision with which a quantity can be determined increases as data describing the pool are accumulated during the development of the field and the producing life of the pool. The uncertainty of a parameter may result from difficulty in directly and accurately measuring the quantity. This is particularly true of the physical reservoir parameters which, at best, can only be sampled at various points, and which are subject to errors caused by presence of the borehole and borehole fluid or by changes that occur during the transfer of rock and its fluids to laboratory temperature and pressure conditions. Uncertainty may also result in attempting to predict future parameter values. This type of uncertainty is particularly evident in investment analyses involving future costs, prices, sales volumes and product demand. Uncertainty in the solution to investment problems is often called risk, and its study is called risk analysis.' Uncertainty also enters into biological and sociological analyses in which indeterminate factors are often important due to limited control of the experimental material. It is customary, in evaluating uncertainty, to perform repeated experiments and to draw conclusions from the distribution of the results of these experiments. With the advent of the high-speed electronic computer, it is possible to construct mathematical models which simulate complex experiments or operations and to perform the experiments repeatedly, utilizing the models. Statistical methods are then applied to the results of the simulated experiments This method forms the basis of the investigation reported here. PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS FOR VARIABLES The uncertainty in the value of a variable may be indicated by a probabilistic description accomplished by expressing the quantity by a probability distribution. Many recognized probability distributions can be used to describe physical quantities. Recent studies used various types of distributions to describe core analysis data.',' However, for the examples in this paper, the uniform and triangular distributions are believed to reasonably approximate the data used (Fig. 1). The uniform distribution confines the variable between an upper and a lower limit. The variable may lie anywhere between the two limits. This distribution is used when no one range of values for a variable is more probable than any other, but information or intuitive reasoning indicates the variable will lie somewhere between the chosen limits. The triangular distribution is used for a variable when more data are available to indicate a central tendency of distribution. This allows postulating a "most likely" value to the distribution and upper and lower limits. In this case, as for the uniform distribution, the variable is not expected to assume a value less than the lower limit or greater than the upper limit. However, with improved quality of data it can be postulated that the variable will tend to assume a value close to the most likely value, and that there will be a decreasing probability for values away from the most likely value. The area under either of these probability distributions is equal to unity since it is assumed that there is a 100 percent probability that the variable will lie somewhere under the curve. An ordinate erected at any particular value of the variable divides the area under the curve into two parts: the area to the left of the ordinate represents the probability that the value of the variable will be equal to or less than the value of the variable at the position of the ordinate, and vice versa. The probability is zero that the variable will have any specific deterministic value. If two ordinates are drawn for any two values of the variable, the probability that the variables will have a value lying between these ordinates is equal to the area under the curve lying between the ordinates.

IN 1925, Harry Howard Stout, then metallurgist for Phelps Dodge Corporation, while investigating the cleaning of cathode copper by various gases at elevated temper-atures below the melting point of the metal, observed in the laboratory that particles of pure copper heated in a closed tube filled with hydrogen seemingly "stuck together." By further investigation he found that there was actual crystal growth across the boundaries of the particles of pure metal; in other words, there was a complete new crystal realignment and growth throughout the newly formed copper mass. It was coalescence, not adhesion; the several parti-cles had become one unit. From this dis-covery has been developed the coalescence process, whereby copper of cathode purity is squirted out in semifabricated form from an extrusion press, by the appli-cation of about 30c0 tons pressure on a 10-in. piston. Stout decided that cathode copper pro-duced by electrolytic deposition was the logical source of the pure copper required for the coalescence process, but as there was no way of reducing the ordinary tough commercial cathodes to the small particles required he was confronted by a serious problem at the outset. Under his direction, this problem was solved by William H, Osborn and Harry Howard Stout, Jr. They developed the process and technique for producing cathode copper in brittle, friable form, and to them must be given the greater part of the credit for this phase of the development program as well as for that relating to the gas cleaning of the cathode particles.

The New Jersey Zinc Co. successfully holed through a 2 ½ -mile haulage tunnel connecting its new Ivanhoe shaft with the Van Mater Shaft at Austinville, Va. This 8 x 10-ft cross-section tunnel was driven from both ends and met at a point approximately a mile from one shaft and a mile and a half from the other. In order to make certain that the faces met accurately on line and grade it was necessary to refine conventional mine surveying practices. The mines that are serviced by these shafts are located in the southwestern part of Virginia approximately midway between Roanoke and Bristol at the west foot of the Blue Ridge. While the presence of lead-zinc sulfide ores has been known in this area for more than 200 years, it was in 1902 that New Jersey Zinc Co. acquired the Austinville property, which has been in constant operation since that time. About ten years ago the company undertook an extensive diamond drilling program at Ivanhoe several miles to the southwest. This program was successful in locating sufficient ore to justify the purchase of a number of the properties in this area and plans were made to develop the new orebodies. The discovery of this ore as well as substantial additional reserves at Austinville resulted in a decision by the company to increase its daily milling capacity to 3000 tons, of which about 1000 tons would be supplied from the Ivanhoe mine.

ON the steep slopes of the Kootenays, 15 to 20 miles south of Nelson, B. C., are a number of ore occurrences (Fig. 1). One that has many features of mining and geological interest is the Ymir Yankee Girl Gold Mines Limited. Discovery of this property was made in 1899 at an outcrop on the hillside, some 2500 ft. above the village of Ymir. This proved to be a branch vein 20 ft. long leading to two main veins, the Yankee Girl and the Spur (Fig. 5). The ore pattern as now delimited shows a remarkable increase in ore area with depth below the outcrop. This recent development is of interest particularly in view of the fact that the property was nearly con-demned, professionally. Another interesting feature, which has a bearing upon its history, is the persistent excess of tonnage produced from period to period over visible reserves. This is not ascribed to lagging mine development, but to detailed vein characteristics, which we will endeavor to make clear by giving a description of the veins and their surroundings.

The alloys of gold and iron were investigated in 1907 by Isaac and Tammann,l who determined the thermal diagram for the entire system by thermal analysis and microscopic examination. They also reviewed the previous literature. Since that time the present authors have been able to find only two additional references. Guertler and Schulze2 examined the electrical resistance of iron alloys containing up to 40 per cent by weight of gold between 0" and 200" C.; the alloys were in the form of wires. The main result of this work was to confirm the solid solubility limit found by Isaac and Tammann; namely, about 20 per cent Au. More recently, Shih3 has examined the magnetic properties of gold alloys containing up to 10 weight per cent iron and particularly the range below 5 per cent. The alloys in the lower range were found to be paramagnetic; the 10 per cent alloy was ferromagnetic. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the solid solubility limits at various temperatures, particularly below the a-y transformation point of iron, since these solubilities are of some importance in connection with the working of the alloys in the manufacture of certain "grey" and "blue" golds. Materials and Methods The gold was obtained from the U. S. Metals Refining Co. and contained 99.99+ per cent Au. The electrolytic iron had been annealed in hydrogen and contained impurities as follows: P, 0.035; Si, 0.001; S, C, Mn, Cu, each 0.01 per cent. THE first to appreciate and foresee the value of applying electrical measurements to structural studies was Prof. Conrad Schlumberger, Professor of Physics at the School of Mines in Paris. One of his earliest practical undertakings in this line was carried out, in the field, at Fierville-la-Campagne, Normandy, in 1912. His book, published in 1920,1 still stands as an authoritative, fundamental treatise on the use of the electric current in geological studies, in spite of the rapid evolution of geophysics during the last seven years. A remarkable feature of this book is that, even then, it stressed the role of electricity in structural investigations and made public the first successful results obtained therewith. Stratigraphic studies have been pursued continuously by Conrad Schlumberger and his associates since 1912, the only interruption being the World War. The results attained demonstrate the wide possibilities of electrical exploration in structural work. This field of activity is, at the least, as varied and valuable as the search for ore. It is curious that until very recently it has so slightly attracted the attention of geophysicists and geologists on this continent. The purpose of this paper is to present briefly some examples of the practical application of the potential methods to geological studies. These examples are chosen from a number of problems solved in the field by our firm, in the course of its consulting practice. Certain fundamental points are briefly stated before the field operations and interpretations are described.

This paper examines the cracking behavior on chemical reduction of three types of ore/oxide briquette mixtures. The complex sintering/hardening atmosphere was replaced by 100% oxygen and the blast furnace atmosphere by a 5/95 hydrogedsteam mixture which was used isothermally at 700°C for a constant, arbitrary time. Cracking has been assessed by measurement of reduction expansion or increase in specimen diameter as a result of chemical reduction and a subjective index based on appearance and friability. Oxidized briquettes of iron ore concentrate crack on reduction'-3 in a manner which parallels the degradation of sinter in the Linder test. In the present work, the cracking behavior on chemical reduction of three types of ore/oxide briquette mixture has been studied. Firstly, LD converter fume with additions of silica; secondly, Oxfordshire ore with ferric oxide; thirdly, ferric oxide with separate additions of silica, alumina and lime. Motivation for the first-mentioned experiments lay in the improvement of the fume as furnace feed; for the second, in assessing the tolerance of a finely divided ferric oxide as a base for low melting point additions. The third series provided additional information. In this work, the complex sintering/hardening atmosphere is replaced by 100% oxygen and the blast furnace atmosphere is replaced by a 5/95 hydrogen/ steam mixture used isothermally at 700°C for a constant arbitrary time. The particular reduction conditions were known from previous experience3 to be capable of disclosing any tendency to cracking. The control of autogenous grinding circuits is very similar to the control of conventional grinding circuits. In both circuits the classifier must be operated to achieve the required degree of mineral liberation. Crude ore grade and grinding mill density are important in both circuits. The biggest difference between the control of the two circuits is the pronounced effect that crude ore changes have on autogenous circuits. The importance of crude grade, weight recovery, size and hardness is greatly magnified because the crude ore in the autogenous circuit is also supplying the grinding media. Crude ore sizing is a particularly critical factor in achieving efficient primary autogenous milling. Because of the above, computer control is advantageous for autogenous circuits. Changes in crude ore may necessitate rapid changes in the entire circuit control strategy, and only a computer can facilitate these changes. Also, the techniques of control are very different for conventional and for autogenous grinding. Set-point control is usually satisfactory in conventional circuits, but the multiplicity of varying conditions in an autogenous circuit usually require some type of computer optimizing search routine. Autogenous mills can be separated into two general types. In primary autogenous mills the media is obtained from the mill feed, and in pebble mills the sized pebble media is added separately from the material being ground. This paper discusses some of the problems involved in predicting the productivity of a shovel and truck fleet in a new set of operating conditions. More specifically, it concentrates on the problems of predicting the travel times on the haul and return portions of the truck cycle under new profile conditions and the prediction of the interaction effect between the shovel and truck at the loading point. The ability to calculate the travel times for a new road profile is not new. Additional corrections of these calculated times for expected actual operation can be made. In considering the interaction between the loader and the hauler, there are two approaches that can be taken. Probably the most accurate method of predicting the shovel-truck interaction is a simulation of the step-by-step operation considering the variation in cycle times of the shovel and trucks. This is usually called a stochastic simulation and requires input describing how these cycle times vary. However, by understanding the causes of this shovel-truck interaction it is possible to make sufficiently accurate predictions with much simpler methods. Haulage Cycle Established from Existing Operations For the purpose of this discussion let us assume that the problem involves trying to predict the productivity of a single shovel-truck fleet at some future time in an existing operation. Let us also assume for simplification that the new operation to be simulated has the same loading and pit conditions and the same dumping conditions as did the existing operation. Therefore, the only difference would be the difference in the hauling profile for the new operation. The problem then becomes one of predicting the change in the travel times on the haul and return portions of the cycle, and in determining the change in interaction between and the shovel and trucks with the new truck cycle times.

Nickel and carbon form a metastable nickel-nickel carbide eutectic system which was ohsen)able by freezing latent-heat arvests at pressures 210 khars. The eutectic freezing temperature Is pressure had a slope of -0.9°Cper kbar. At 50 khars, the nickel-nickel carbide eutectic was at 1297° * 5°C and 0.34 mole fraction Ni3C. The composition of the eutectic increased at an initial rate of 0.004 mol fraction per kbar. The carbon content of the a phase also increased with pressure. Seveval illustrations of nickel carbide microstruc-tures are given and data on the lattice expansion of nickel in terms of carbon content are included. IRON, cobalt, and nickel form a variety of carbides with compositions varying between MeC and MC. Of the three, the carbides of iron are most easily recovered. The nickel carbides are so unstable at temperatures above 900°C that their occurrence in Ni-C alloys is unusual. Under sufficient pressure, however, the temperature range for the stability of the ferrous metal carbides is likely to be increased, or their decomposition suppressed (e.g., see Hilliard' on FesC), providing an opportunity to study the unstable carbides more closely. This was found to be true for nickel carbide which, under pressure, formed a eutectic with nickel. This paper describes the conditions of formation of nickel-nickel carbide eutectic compositions and their subsequent recovery. Despite the comparative instability of the nickel carbides, something is already known about them through various chemical reactions at temperatures not exceeding a few hundred degrees, and from their recovery by the very rapid quenching of molten Ni-C alloys from temperatures of about 1450°C or above. At least four carbides of nickel have been reported: A discussion of the state of knowledge about Ni3C is given by ansen.' The studies of Morrogh and williams7 who obtained Widmanstatten nickel carbide structures and of sidorenko8 who first obtained nickel carbide eutectic structures are also of interest. Sidorenko used short heating times for molten nickel in a graphite crucible followed by very rapid quenching to obtain the eutectic structures. Long heating times produced only the nickel-graphite eutectic probably due to the presence of graphite crystals in the melt which nucleated graphite crystallization. According to the early work summarized by anssen,' nickel carbide may form at temperatures far above the melting point and may be recovered by very rapid quenching. More recently, Giardini and Tydings, working on diamond synthesis, found evidence for "free nickel carbide'' in high-pressure reactions carried to temperatures far in excess of the limit for diamond growth, followed by rapid thermal quench. They stated that nickel carbide was not found in association with diamond growth. In the present work, observations were made on the melting and solidification temperatures of Ni-C alloys as a function of composition, temperature, and pressure. The nickel-nickel carbide eutectic was found at pressures above 10 kbar and its variation with pressure followed up to 60 kbar. Nickel-nickel carbide microstructures were recovered by quenching under pressure from temperatures of about 1400°C and higher. The formation of nickel carbide structures under ordinary diamond-growing conditions was usually observed but the role of carbide formation as an intermediate step in diamond growth needs more study. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The melting and solidification temperatures of various nickel-graphite compositions were observed by latent-heat arrests in the sample holder illustrated in Fig. 1. The samples were composed of mixtures of carbonyl nickel powder and National Carbon Co.'s SP-1 graphite packed to densities of about 6.4 g per cu cm. They were contained within
