INTRODUCTION Though the use of continuous mining machines consolidated the operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading in one machine that would theoretically provide uninterrupted production, it was soon realized that the face haulage and roof support operations remained as major impediments to continuous production. The ability to provide not only continuous cutting and loading, but also continuous haulage and roof support (see Fig. I), was the basis for the introduction of mechanized longwall systems in this country from Europe in 1951. The early systems employed friction props for roof support, but were to become obsolete shortly after introduction of the first hydraulically powered, self-advancing supports in 1960. Since then, use of the longwall technique has grown to the point where it is currently providing more than 5% of the annual output of underground coal mines in the United States. The shortwall system had its origin in Australia, but was first introduced into this country in 1962 following the development of powered roof supports. It, too, provides for continuous cutting, loading, and roof support (see Fig. 2), but has not experienced the widespread popularity of longwall due to its inherent inability to easily provide for continuous haulage. While there are in the neighborhood of 100 longwall systems currently in operation in this country, there are only a handful of short- wall operations providing production of slightly more than 907 184.7 t/a (1,000,000 stpy). Both of these systems provide uninterrupted roof support for face operations by means of hydraulically powered steel roof supports. In each case, the coal removal consists of open-end cuts made from the narrow end of a large rectangular pillar (panel) which has been blocked out by continuous miners developing entries around its perimeter. This paper is the report of an investigation to determine the relations between the viscosity, temperature and composition of that portion of the silica-alumina-lime-magnesia system(l) within which blast-furnace slags are found. The work reported in this paper was made possible by a grant of funds from Engineering Foundation. It is a part of a project, the determination of properties and structure of iron blast-furnace slags, upon which the laboratories of the University of Wisconsin have been at work for some years. Three papers have been published, which have marked the progress of the study of iron blast-furnace slags at Wisconsin. The first,(2) Desul-furizing Power of Iron Blast-furnace Slags, discussed the solubility of sulfur in slags that contained no magnesia and discussed the viscosity. The second, (3) The Constitution of Iron Blast-furnace Slags, developed the constitutions of slags in the four-component system, silica-alumina-lime-magnesia, and pointed out an explanation of slag structure. Composition of Iron Blast-furnace Slags,(l) which was the third paper, gave a method of calculating the percentages of the various compounds present in slags when the amount of oxide was given and also an interpretation of quaternary equilibrium. Illustrations were given of the mineral composition of blast-furnace slags and some applications of composition results were shown. Because of their relative ease of measurement, the viscosity-temperature relation for slags was selected as a factor which would be useful in correlating the physical properties of molten slags to furnace operation. With this in mind the viscosities of slags whose compositions are in that portion of the quaternary system, silica-alumina-lime-magnesia, in which blast-furnace slags occur, were thoroughly investigated.

The elastic earth waves produced naturally by earthquakes have been used for a long time as evidence from which to draw conclusions in ; regard to the constitution of the interior and crust of the earth. The I elastic earth waves produced artificially by occasional explosions and ' recorded by seismological observatories were used to draw conclusions regarding the geology of the intervening area. Intentionally produced elastic earth waves in the past five years have come to be used extensively in the investigation of very local geologic structure. The scismic method of working geologic structure, which makes use of artificially controlled explosions and the resulting earth waves, has developed almost clairvoyant power in handling certain geologic situations; and, in the discovery of salt domes in the Gulf Coastal Plain region of Texas and Louisiana, it has scored the most brilliant success. The first proposal for the use of artificial earthquakes in the study of velocity of elastic earth waves in the surface formations of the earth's crust were made before 1888, by the English seismologists mallet and Abbot. Partly on the basis of their work, A. Schmidt in 1888 proposed the use of time-(Iistnncc graphs of artificial earthquakes to study the variation of vellocity with depth. Belar in 1902 proposed the practical 'application of such investigation in connection with boring tunnels. Galitzcn repeated1y (1912. I9IX) proposed the use of explosions to study the velocity of the longitudinal and transverse waves in the uppermost formations and pointed out that the velocity depended in a high degree on the physical character of the beds and that from changes in the velocity, conclusions could be drawn in regard to the composition of the beds. Somewhat the same thought was proposed by von dem Borne (1908), by Benndorf, Udden and others.' Prior to 1909 that mountain of porphyry known as Sacramento Hill had hardly been touched though it had always been thought to contain ore. During that year, exploratory work was started by underground methods; drifting and raising continued until 1913. It was proved that a mineralized zone existed, the limits of which had not been determined ; so, because of the lower costs of exploratory work and the greater desirability of vertical sections, it was decided to prove the extent of the ore zone by churn drills. Drilling continued until 1917, when it seemed almost certain that the horizontal limits of the orebodies had been determined. Ore continued in depth in one direction beyond a point where it was economical to explore by churn drilling; this extension is still being developed by underground methods. The irregularities of the boundaries of the ore zones, together with the variable grades of ore encountered, made it necessary to drill on the corners of 100-ft. squares. Two ore zones were proved, known as the East and West Orebodies. The Sacramento Hill porphyry stock intruded into the Dividend fault. The fault ran roughly east and west with a dip to the south, having pre-Cambrian schists on the north against Paleozoic limestone on the south. This intrusion was accompanied by a silica breccia on the south periphery, along the limestone contact side. The ore lay in the silica breccia and in the porphyry, some distance from the breccia. NO ore was found in the heart of the porphyry mass on the north side, along the schist contact. The West Orebody is elliptic in shape, having a major axis of 1200 ft. (366 m.) and a minor axis of 800 ft. (244 m.); these diminish with depth until, at 300 ft., the axes are 500 ft. and 300 ft., respectively. The ore consists of chalcocite, some bornite, chalcopyrite, and considerable pyrite in a siliceous gangue. About 30 per cent. of the copper is caused by

The microseismic method of detecting instability in underground mines was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in the early 1940's. ,3 The method relies on the fact that as rock is stressed, strain energy is stored in the rock. Accompanying the buildup of strain energy are small-scale displacement adjustments that release small amounts of seismic and acoustic energy. These small-scale disturbances, which can be detected with the aid of special geophysical equipment, are called micro-seisims or self-gene rated rock noises. It was further determined that as failure of rock is approached, the rate at which rock noises are generated increases. Thus, by monitoring a rock structure at intervals and plotting rock noise rates vs. time, a semi quantitative estimate of the behavior and stability of the structure can be made. Since sufficient use of the microseismic method is still being made by various mining and construction companies, USBM undertook a comprehensive review of the method and a study of the fundamental properties of rock noises. As all prior work on rock noises has been done with resonant-type geophones, which prevented any analysis of their vibration records, it was necessary to develop the instrumentation and field techniques in order that their properties could be investigated, such as their frequency spectrum and absorption characteristics, and to determine if both P and S-waves are generated by a rock noise. The aim of this program is the design of microseismic instrumentation which can be better utilized as an engineering tool than the presently available microseismic equipment. This new design, based on the basic properties of rock noises, should allow better utilization of these phenomena in the study and location of zones of incipient instability in both underground and open-pit mines. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE To study the waveform of rock noises, it was necessary to develop a microseismic system with a broad bandwidth. To achieve high sensitivity and broad frequency response, commercial ceramic accelerometers were used. The present broad-band microseismic system consists of accelerometers as geophones, low-noise preamplifiers, high-gain amplifiers, and an FM magnetic tape recorder. This seven-channel system has a flat frequency response from 20 to 10,000 Hz, a noise level of less than 2.0 kv, and a dynamic range (including manual set attenuation) of greater than 100 db; it can detect signals with acceleration levels as low as 2 ug. The entire system is solid state and hence battery operated and portable (Fig. 1) Analysis procedures consist of playing back the 30-in-per-sec (ips) magnetic tape recordings at 1 7/8 ips to expand the time scale of a recorded rock noise event and then recording this on a high-speed direct-writing oscillograph. The oscilIographic records are then digitized and run through Fourier integral analysis computer programs to determine the frequency spectrum of a rock noise event. The oscillographic records are also examined visually to determine if both P and S-waves can be recognized in a rock noise waveform. Broad-band microseismic recordings have been made at field sites in a wide variety of rock types and in both underground and open-pit mines. Sites include the Kimbley Pit, Ruth, Nev.; the Galena Mine, Wallace, Idaho; the Colony Development Mine. Grand Valley, Colo.; the Cliff Shaft Mine, Ishpeming, Mich; and the White Pine Mine, White Pine, Mich. DATA AND DISCUSSION Analyses of the recorded data have shown that rock noise frequencies are very broad. Fig. 2 and 3 show typical rock noise events and their frequency spectrums. In addition, it is evident from these figures that the wave form of a rock noise is very complex. The wide frequency variation, 50 to 7500 Hz, is due to many variables; the effect of travel distance is the only one examined in this study. The higher frequency components of the wave are rapidly absorbed with distance or increasing travel time. Fig. 4 shows the change in waveform resulting from an additional travel distance of 195 ft. From these data, it is apparent that a resonant-type microseismic geophone cannot respond to all frequencies generated by a rock noise, and in spite of the fact that the tuned geophone is more sensitive at resonance, a geophone with less sensitivity but broader band width is much more effective in detecting rock noises. In addition, a study of broad-band microseismic records shows that both P and S-wave arrivals are easily detected, as shown in Fig. 5. By means of the C-Sic thermocouple1, liquid metal temperatures have been found to vary much more than was previously supposed, and fortunately these variations can be directly associated with some of our former knowledge which combined to form the "art" of liquid-metal manipulation. Commercial Development of This Device Several types of installations are operating in different plants. There are so many variables in steel plants in regard to operation, procedure, arrangement of pouring platforms, ladles, etc., that most of the installations now in service in this country are "tailor-made"; nevertheless, it is felt that satisfactory gains have been made, inasmuch as each installation has indicated some effect of temperature upon the metallurgical operation, and has pointed the way toward technical and financial benefits. In most cases, it has been necessary to accumulate the temperature data until sufficient metallurgical information is available for the drawing of conclusions. When mechanical difficulties have been eliminated, a distinct correlation of these factors has been obtained. The installations now in service are used for the determination of temperatures in the basic open-hearth furnace prior to tapping and in ladles from both acid and basic furnaces prior to pouring. Some of the installations are in shops making the higher priced steels; others are in "tonnage shops." The errors of human element, smoke screens and emissivity corrections connected with the use of the optical pyrometer do not affect the C-SiC thermocouple readings. The accuracy of the C-Sic thermocouple and the temperatures measured are discussed later in this paper. FOR the past eight years No. 2 mine of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., Springhill, Nova Scotia-a subsidiary of the Dominion Coal Co., Ltd.-has had an unenviable reputation for bumps. As the workings extended in certain directions under a greater cover, these bumps increased in severity and it became apparent that some change in the system of extraction was necessary if the mine was to continue to operate. In September, 1924, following several fatalities resulting from bumps, the Mines Department of Nova Scotia requested from the U. S.. Bureau of Mines the services of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau, to report on the conditions then prevalent in No. 2 mine, Springhill. This request was promptly and courteously granted. Mr. Rice made a full investigation and a comprehensive and helpful report, which is embodied in the 1924 Annual Report of the Department of Public Works and Mines, Nova Scotia. Prior to 1925, the room and pillar method wasp employed and in January of that year (there being a cessation of work from March to August due to labor troubles) longwall retreating on the west side, on a limited scale, and in a small section on the east side of the mine was started. The major portion of the east side was not operated on this system till August, 1926, as there was developed a considerable area ready for pillar extraction between an arbitrary boundary and a point up to which bumps of any consequence had not been experienced. In the interval development work for longwall retreating below the 5900-ft. level was vigorously pushed. This longwall retreating system was suggested by Mr. Rice as a possible remedy and was heartily endorsed by the company officials. This paper describes the conditions and happenings subsequent to Mr. Rice's report and more especially the results with the longwall retreating system of mining under the peculiar circumstances pertaining to mining No. 2 Seam, Springhill, at depth, and records the conclusions which experience with several severe bumps under this mode of extraction would suggest. Except where necessary to make the paper intelligible as an entity any duplication of Mr. Rice's report will be avoided.

This paper outlines the development of a program for increasing the life of woolen bags used for filtering Dwight-Lloyd gases by treating the bags and gases with hydrated lime. Methods and apparatus are described for determining alkalinity of dusts, acidity and breaking strength of bag cloth. Procedure and results, based on several years of operation, are presented. DURING 1939, additional facilities were constructed in the Dwight-Lloyd Blast Furnace and Baghouse departments at the Selby, California, Plant of the American Smelting and Refining Co. In order to handle adequately the increased volume of gases from the resultant increase in production, it was necessary to increase gradually the amount of water used for cooling gases ahead of the sinter machine baghouse. As a result of this increased water cooling, the average bag life dropped from 27 months in 1939 to 14 months in 1941. (Table I). This drop in life meant an increased. bag cost, as well as lower recovery of dust and some curtailment of operation. During 1941, it was found new bags showed as high as 0.3 pct acidity* after two weeks of opera- tion and as much as 2.0 pct acidity after some months of operation. This high acidity was present in spite of the fact that free oxide or relative alkalinity of the unburned dust ran from 5 to 6 pct. In view of these circumstances, a twofold program was started in Nov. 1941.t Part one of this program consisted of vigorously dipping all new bags in a weak lime solution, containing 50 lb of hydrated lime per 50 gal of water. Part two consisted of feeding fine, dry, hydrated lime into the gas stream intake of the sinter baghouse fan. Apparatus for feeding this lime is shown in fig. 1. All baghouse chambers are shaken in rotation about once each hour. On alternate hours, the baghouse operator places 50 lb of hydrated lime (one sack) into the lime feeder, starts feeder and immediately starts the bag shaking machinery. The rate at which lime is fed is set to coincide with the approximate time necessary to shake all sinter bag-house chambers, or about 15 min. It is felt this method of lime addition is most effective for getting lime into the woolen bag fabric. The amount of lime so fed averages about 600 lb per day. The amount of lime fed per day is varied to keep a minimum relative alkalinity of 9 pct in the unburned sinter dust. A daily dust sample is taken for alkalinity by allowing dust to accumulate in a sample pipe over a 24-hr period. This sample pipe, placed in any chamber cellar, is 2 in. in diam, 4 ft long, is sealed on the inner end, and capped on the outer end. It has a 1/2 in. slot cut for 18 in. along the tip end. This slot faces upward and allows the pipe to fill gradually with dust as bags are shaken. Breaking strength of bags has, in most cases, been the deciding factor in bag replacement. Bags that normally test 100 psi breaking strength when new are replaced when they test under 35 lb. The method for determining breaking strength is shown in the description accompanying fig. 2. Since the start of the liming program in 1941, bag life has increased from 14 months to an average of over 23 months, with a consequent material decrease in bag cost per year. Acidity, as per cent sulphuric acid, may be determined by means of a Beckman pH meter as follows: From a piece of bag cloth. which has been thoroughly cleaned of dust, a 5 g sample is weighed on a balance. Cut the sample into fine pieces and place in a 400 cc beaker. Add 100 cc (measured) of distilled water and stir vigorously. Filter on suction funnel, holding cloth pulp in beaker with a stirring rod. Wash cloth sample and filter wash water four additional times, each time with 20 cc distilled water, the last time squeezing cloth pulp over funnel. Discard pulp and rinse funnel and filter paper. Pour wash solution jnto measuring graduate and make up to exactly 300 cc with distilled water. Place into clean 600 cc beaker and measure the pH on meter. Prior to 1916, thickening was an art, and any accurate decision as to what size of machine to install to handle a given tonnage of a specific ore must have been one of those intuitive conclusions, based on both intimate and extensive acquaintance with thick-ners and ore pulps. Then in 1916 "knowledge of acquaintance," became "knowledge about" with the publication of the Coe and Clevenger paper.' The unit operation of thickening had graduated to the status of an engineering science. The fundamental similitude relationships for the two major phases of the operation were defined so clearly that batch tests on models as small as liter cylinders could serve to specify protypes as large as 325 ft in diameter. It is quite apparent from reading the literature that Coe and Clevenger's contribution is not generally appreciated. In so far as the basic engineering relationships are concerned, the only real advance which has occurred in the 30 odd years which have elapsed since the Coe and Clevenger paper is the recognition of the effect of the rakes on the thickening process. Bull and Darby2 noted this in 1926, and the extensive use of the "gluten type" thickener, in which the effect is magni-fied, bears witness to its importance. Comings3 further verified this effect of the rakes. As a matter of fact, a number of papers show an apparent regression from the Coe paper in that the area determinations are made on the basis of a single test from One concentration of solids. Coe and Clevenger amply demonstrated that this is unsafe, since the controlling zone may be one other than that of the feed dilution. Comings3 neatly demonstrated this without apparently realizing it. Of course there have been significant advances in the application of the operation to industry. Open tray thickeners were introduced to save area; balanced tray thickeners, washing thickeners, and multifeed clarifiers were developed with all of their special hydraulic and mechanical problems. Combinations of all kinds have been introduced, such as combination agitators and thickeners, combination flocculators and clarifiers, combination thickeners and filters. With the establishment of the operation on a firm engineering foundation, installation was facilitated and expansion proceeded. There are still problems, of course, functional as well as mechanical. Sometimes the moisture in the underflow obtained in practice is not as low as is expected on the basis of the test data. Sometimes the underflow is so "thick " that its discharge and subsequent handling requires special attention. Island formation plagues some operators. The use of the thickener as a surge basin and blending tank in the cement industry poses unusual problems. Design of rakes and the drive mechanism must be continually im-proved. Corrosion problems must he overcome. Power requirements for raking the settled solids occasionally is the controlling factor as it was in the case of the all American Canal desilting installation. Other similitude relationships and design problems come into the picture when we enter the field of clarification or nonline settlement. We have an energy dissipation problem in introducing the feed and any models must satisfy the Froude model relationships. Autoflocculation requires detention which involves the same similitude laws that we encounter in the compression zone. Approach to an Exact Science The next step beyond having control of the similitude relationships is to understand the why of these relationships right back up the line to first principles. The ultimate might be that, if given the mineralogical composition of the solids and their size distribution together with an analysis of the suspending liquid, we could calculate the entire thickening behavior of the system. Then we could say we had reduced the operation to an exact science. True it might be more trouble getting this basic analytical data than to make our empirical determinations for area and volume, and we would need an ENIAC to calculate the results, but that does not detract from the desirability of such understanding. Considerable work has been done by the chemical engineers with this end in view. Comings,3 Egolf,4 Work,5 Kam-mermeyer,6 Steinour,7 and others have studied the problem. The writer has no final answer to the thickening story but would like to propose a picture of the mechanics of the two phases of thickening which has been found useful in understanding the subject and which leads to some convenient relationship in treating the compression step and arriving at the compression depth.

This establishment being now in full working order, it has seemed of considerable professional interest to collect together, in a concise form, the various points as to its plan, method of dressing, and equipment. The data contained in this paper have been largely drawn from the able paper of E. Kutscher, constrnoting engineer of the works, contained in the Zeitschrift fur Berg-HÜtten-und Salinenwesen im Preussischen Staate, 1873, supplemented by some personal memoranda made while the works were under construction and by memoranda on the works appearing in various German technical papers from their completion up to date. This is probably the largest dressing works in the world devoted to the beneficiation of argentiferous lead ores, and it is doubtful if any establishment for the concentration of mineral of any description can compare with it in size. As showing the final practice adopted in an old and very conservative mining region, in which the concentration of ores has been a matter of constant practice and experiment for a very long period, these works are of peculiar interest. The fact that the Clausthal ores strongly resemble a very large and abundant class of ores found in the United States has always attracted the attention of American mining engineers and mine owners to the methods employed in dressing and smelting them. The study of their methods of concentration of ores has, however, always been full of difficulty,

DALY (communication to the Secretary?).-The fundamental disagreement between Eugene Coste and the writer proceeds essentially from the contradictory views they hold on the origin of petroleum. This difference cannot be bridged, nor can inorganic and organic theories be discussed here. The writer has suggested that the proper thing in such a case would be to agree to disagree. Coming to the detailed objections further presented by Mr. Coste, the writer feels that, in the main, they take their source in a wrong interpretation of the theory, and the writer is sometimes too generously invested with views that are not his own. 1. The only requirement for the theory is that the oil proceeding from organic remains be distributed in a water-laden sediment, and that this sediment be submitted to the increasing compression due to the continuous accumulation of superimposed strata, which would tend to squeeze out the liquid contents (p. 1152). This squeezing out would be further aided by the distortion of the strata (p. 1148, a). Nothing here makes impossible the slow formation of the oil, if this is considered necessary, as the piling up of the strata in the syncline would require by itself a protracted length of time, and, further, the squeezing-out process is a slow one. Possibly the formation of the oil may even continue during part of the process of distortion. But the mode of formation of the oil and the time and temperature required for it are left to the chemist to decide. The diastrophic theory, which is essentially a theory of motion and accumulation dependent on the laws of mechanics, is not directly concerned with them, provided the general points heretofore outlined be agreed upon. Perhaps it would be wise not to claim too many "eons" for the formation of the hydrocarbons, if the statement made by Sir Boverton Redwood is correct that "the coral reefs of the Red Sea are charged in places with recent petroleum, formed in that torrid climate from the swarming organisms occupying the shallow pools."1

Consumers of metallurgical coke are agreed that the quality of their fuel plays an important part in the performance of the furnace. Less unanimous agreement is evident when the properties of a desirable coke are discussed or when consideration is made of suitable testing methods by which the worth of a coke for metallurgical purposes may be determined quantitatively. Much has been written of the importance of combustibility as a factor in determining the performance of coke in the blast furnace and it is generally believed that cokes vary widely in this respect. The usual operating data of the furnace afford little evidence as to the combustibility of the fuel. As a part of a general investigation of the properties of metallurgical coke, the Bureau of Mines has explored the hearth combustion zone in a number of blast furnaces by means of water-cooled gas sampling tubes driven into the hearth through the tuyeres. The attempt has been made to determine the difference in combustibility of cokes varying widely in physical properties. Data have also been obtained in an experimental combustion furnace at the Bureau laboratories in Pittsburgh. This paper gives the results of experiments, made at eleven blast furnaces, in which the composition of the gases was determined at various points in the hearth in the plane of the tuyeres. Further work is in progress in which the zone above the tuyeres will be explored. I T is generally accepted that no method of coal cleaning except froth flotation is effective in cleaning dust. In the majority of coals mined in the United States the dust sizes contain a high percentage of impurities, hence the removal of the dust from the coarse sizes lowers the impurity content of these sizes. Dedusted coal is desired as a means of providing a better feed to cleaning plants because of increased efficiency in both dry and wet plants. In dry-cleaning plants, a dedusted feed makes for a pervious and uni¬form bed. With a dusty feed the fines tend to segregate in the feed stream and pass en masse over the air separators, causing a lack of uniform aeration and fluidity of the bed necessary to efficient cleaning. In wet-cleaning plants deducting of the feed often decreases the sludge problem to the point of eliminating the necessity of wasting wash water. It may be advantageous to eliminate sludge-settling equipment in favor of dedusting equipment, to provide the advantages of a dedusted feed to the wet-washing process. Dedusting advantages may include: (1) the removal of fusain, especially advantageous in plants washing coal intended for metallurgical coke; (2) prevention of the gradual build-up of solids in the wash water, with a consequent variation in the washing ability of the system; (3) prevention of the loss of dust to the sludge ponds, providing instead a fuel for local consumption or special markets.

The adsorption mechanism of dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) on mercury in potassium fluoride solutions at natural, near neutral pH was investigated. Difler-ential capacity combined with electrocapillary measurements on a dropping mercury electrode were found to provide a sensitive and reliable approach. A shift in the electro capillary maximum (or the point-of-zero-charge) towards positive polarization of the surface due to the adsorption of amine indicated a specific affinity of dodecylammonium ion for mercury surfaces. The amine was shown to adsorb competitively with potassium ion on mercury. Through correlation of the adsorption density of the amine, calculated from the thermodynamic analyses of the electrocapillary curves, and of the diflerential capacity curves, the adsorbed state and the orientation of the amine at the interface were considered. The similarities and the differences in the adsorption behavior of the amine on mercury and on such ionic solids as quartz, silver sulfide, and silver iodide were evaluated. With the promise of flotation providing a cheap and large-scale process for the upgrading of low-grade ores and magnetic concentrates, the iron ore industry has made a sustained search over the years for a flotation reagent of general applicability and high selectivity. Having shelves full of commercial reagents already on hand and anticipating more, both the users and the suppliers are in need of an experimental approach sensitive enough to differentiate the individual characteristics in each group of reagents. Therefore, the adsorption behavior of various flotation reagents on mineral surfaces from aqueous solutions has been a subject of much investigation. The current view of adsorption based on the electrical double-layer theory is formulated on the assumption that certain ions in solution act as potential-determining ions.
