The Indian Standards code of practice for design and construction of underreamed piles contains provision for installing such piles in expasive soils. In recent years, a large amount of research work has been carried out in the analysis, design, construction and performance of underreamed piles in expansive soils. This paper suggests that the results of this research field tests should be included in the code. Various additions and modifications as well as deletions that should be incorporated in the code are discussed.

Abstract: Triaxial tests were conducted on the schist specimens with various anisotropic angles under confining pressures of 0, 7 and 15 MPa, and axial stress-axial strains, were measured and plotted for various conditions. The results obtained reveal the effects of schistose on the strength and deformability of the rock very clearly. Peak strength of the specimens for 00 and 900 schistose orientations are nearly the same. Modulus of elasticity of this rock varies with anisotropic angle. For 0 orientation modulus of elasticity increases to a maximum. Confining pressure increases the peak strength and improves the rock deformability. However, this effect is not the same for various orientations, and there are no similar trends for each anisotropy direction. Analysis of the results shows that consideration of a linear failure criterion such as Mohr-Coulomb is appropriate for the prediction of rock behaviour up to 10 MPa, rather than a non-linear one. The analysis also reveals that the friction angle and cohesion are affected by the anisotropy orientation, and this effect is more important for the cohesion than the friction angles. L analyse des resulitats montre que le criterre de ruin comme mohr–colomb est moderate pour le pousse lateral jusq av lo mega pascal , et ce n est pas neccesaire d utiliser de criterre no–linear . Cette analyse aussi montre que l angle de frottement et cohsion est en relation de la direction no–isotrop, et cette effet est olus important pour le cohsion par a port de l angle de frottement . Maximale Kraft der Exemplare für 0° und 90 sind° schistos Orientierungen beinahe das gleiche. Modulus der Elastizität von diesem Felsen ändert sich mit anisotropic Winkel. Für 0° vermehrt Orientierung modulus der Elastizität zu einem Maximum. Einschränkender Druck vermehrt die maximale Kraft und verbessert den Felsen deformability. Aber ist diese Wirkung nicht das gleiche für verschiedene Orientierungen, und es gibt keine ähnlichen Tendenzen für jede anisotropic Richtung. Analyse der Ergebnisse zeigt jener Überlegung Kriterium eines linearen Ausfalls wie zum Beispiel Mohr Coulomb passend für die Voraussage von Felsen Verhalten bis zu 10 MPa, anstatt eines nicht linear ist. Die Analyse offenbart auch, daß der Reibung Winkel und Bindekraft werden beeinflußt von der anisotropic Orientierung, und diese Wirkung wichtiger für die Bindekraft ist, als der Reibung Winkel

The embrittlement of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by hydrogen dosing at elevated temperature has been investigated. Metal coupons were subjected to isothermal treatments in a partial hydrogen atmosphere in the temperature range from 650ºC?950ºC and the degree of embrittlement after treatment was determined by drop-weight impact testing. Embrittlement was found to be inversely related to reaction temperature as a result of the combined effects of greater hydrogen absorption and titanium hydride precipitation at the lower isothermal temperatures. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are conducting a cross-sectional survey of equipment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry. Surface and underground limestone is one commodity recently surveyed. The sound levels of mining and processing equipment were recorded to identify noise sources. Full-shift worker noise exposures were completed to determine the exposure of various occupations. This paper presents the results of the noise research conducted in both underground and surface limestone mines, detailing the equipment likely to cause worker overexposures, and the occupations experiencing overexposures. Implications for worker noise exposure reduction are also reported.

The properties of crude petroleum continue to interest the Bureau of Mines and constitute an important phase of its major studies on the mineral resources of the United States. The Bureau's interest in the subject has been intensified by frequent requests for information on the characteristics of crude petroleum from various producing fields. Since its inception the Bureau of Mines has collected and analyzed samples of typical oils and at present has surveyed and classified crude petroleums from nearly all the known oil fields of the Western Hemisphere. Results of these surveys have been presented in various Bureau of Mines publications. (See bibliography, appendix A, p. 145.) The nature and comparative value of crude oils from various countries and the extent to which these oils may be considered potential competitors for markets are of manifest importance to the petroleum industry in all lands, largely because all crude oils, wherever produced, are either actual or potential competitors for a market with all other crude oils. The numerous discussions of foreign production of oil that have appeared in the technical press in the past indicate the great interest of the United States in this subject.

"High quality activated carbon is essential in the recovery of gold in Carbon-in-Leach (CIL), Carbon-in-Pulp (CIP), and Carbon-in-Column (CIC) circuits. Goldcorp’s Campbell complex at Red Lake Gold Mines (RLGM) experienced a period of low soluble gold (Au) recoveries during Q3 2013, during which time the processing plant saw higher than typical Au grades in the CIP tails solution stream. A technical review identified that the CIP circuit may be experiencing a carbon-fouling issue. To further understand the degree of fouling, and to troubleshoot the low recovery problem, samples of carbon were collected from the CIP, elution, acid wash, and regeneration circuits, and submitted for characterization test work. This paper summarizes the steps taken to remedy the carbon-fouling problem at RLGM resulting in increased overall Au recovery.Overview of Red Lake Gold MinesRed Lake Gold Mines is located approximately 450 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in Ontario’s western boundary region.All mining is carried out through underground operations, utilizing overhand cut and fill, underhand cut and fill, and long-hole mining methods. Ore types include: silica-replaced carbonate veins with free milling gold, siliceous replacement-type mineralization (rich with arsenopyrite) marginal to veins, broad disseminated sulphide mineralization along major shears, and some minor sulphidized chemical sediment-hosted ore. The operation is supported by two milling complexes: Red Lake, and Campbell.Process DescriptionThe Campbell processing plant's main unit operations consist of grinding, gravity concentrating, flotation, autoclaving, leaching, carbon-in-pulp (CIP), carbon elution and reactivation, electro-winning, bullion smelting/refining and cyanide destruction, and concentrate handling. A schematic of the plant flowsheet is shown in the figure below.BackgroundHigh quality activated carbon is essential in the recovery of gold at many CIP/CIL/CIC processing plants. At RLGM, gold-bearing ore is milled and cyanide is added to leach the gold from the solids into solution. The dissolved gold then comes into contact with activated carbon, and adsorbs onto its highly porous surfaces. Gold is then recovered by separating the activated carbon from the main slurry for further refining. As such, the characteristics and quality of the activated carbon have a significant and direct impact on overall gold recovery."

Blasting activities on the surface or underground necessarily involve the most sensitive aspect of environment remediation, human response or annoyance. Such effects are unavoidably characteristic of those activities. For this reason, blasting activities are governed by law and official regulations under surveillance of authorities, where companies and explosives engineers have to proceed within proper limits. Subject of the paper is a practical way of handling some necessary vibration standards being focused on blasting activities. A large metallurgical experiment station at Salt Lake City to house the works of the Bureau of Mines in the intermountain area properly has long been projected. It finally became possible when a Public Works Allotment of $300,000 was set aside for building and equipment. With the new building assured, the Bureau of Mines decided to move the headquarters of its Metallurgical Division from Washington, D. C., to Salt Lake City, Utah. It was felt that this move would simplify they administrative work of the chief engineer of the division, as all stations devoted primarily to metallurgical work are west of the Mississippi. These include Rolla, Mo.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Pullman, Wash.; Reno, Nev.; Berkeley, Calif.; Boulder City, Nev.; and Tucson, Ariz. In addition to these stations will groups, of investigators working on metallurgical problem, are maintained at Pittsburgh, Pa., and College Park, Md. Salt Like City was clearly a more central point for the direction of this scattered work than Washington, D. C. The building (fig. 1, A and B) was designed from general plans worked out by the authors of this paper. Contraction was begun in March of 1939, and by the end of the year the Metallurgical Division had moved, into its now quarters.

Direct reduction of iron ore by solid reducing agents have been studied extensively and summarised by several authors (Otsuka and Kunii, 1969; Abraham and Ghosh, 1979; Frauhan, 1977; Rao, 1971; Kawasaki, Sanscainte and Walsh, 1962; Ghosh, 1970; Rao, 1979). While studying the reduction behaviour, it is generally agreed that the reduction occurs via gaseous intermediate, generated by carbon gasification reaction which involves mass transfer, heat transfer nucleation and growth, etc through a) reduction reaction occurring at solid reductant, and b) reduction reaction occurring at solid iron oxides, thus making the overall reduction process very complex in terms of clearly defining the reduction kinetics of the system. In addition to this, practical difficulties like correctness of reaction temperature, (Seaton, Foster and Velasco, 1983) difficulties in isothermal temperature studies of reduction, difficulties in monitoring the reduction process while using gaseous reductants and separation of reduction by volatile matter from overall reduction process make the reduction kinetics more complex (Misra).

The year 2010 will mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the research efforts by the U.S. government to improve the health and safety of miners working in the United States. This research began in 1910 with the establishment of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (the Bureau) and it has continued during the past 10 decades, even after the closure of the Bureau in 1996. The research on safer mining technology, formerly done by the Bureau, has now been combined with National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) studies of miners? health to form a unified federal research program to improve the health and safety of miners. This article describes this research and places some of the accomplishments into perspective with other activities in the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Time Line (insert).

Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o potencial gratifizante de adições de alumínio, em conjunto com inoculante a base de silício, diretamente no fundo do basquete antes do basculamento da panela de metal líquido no basquete da máquina centrífuga, a fim de produzir tubos centrifugados de ferro fundido nodular de matriz majoritariamente ferrítica. Amostras extraídas da ponta e cabeça dos tubos, sem e com distintas adições de alumínio, foram submetidas a tratamentos de recozimento (1050, 1000 e 900ºC), a fim de serem analisadas por meio de análise microestrutural e dureza Brinell. De acordo com os resultados obtidos a incorporação de alumínio ao ferro fundido foi mais efetiva para a incorporação de 1,7% de Al no ferro fundido, permitindo obter um ferro fundido nodular de composição ligeiramente hipereutética, com adequada grafitização e matriz 100% ferrítica, mesmo nas condições testadas com menor temperatura de encharque (900ºC) no recozimento, e com dureza dentro das especificações para a aplicação.

RECENTLY, it has been demonstrated that a considerable densification and interparticle bonding can be achieved if a pressure is applied to a powder compact while the material of the compact is undergoing either a decomposition reaction' or a polymorphic transformation.' The term "reactive hot pressing" has been coined to identify this process in which a phase change is combined with pressure to achieve interparticle bonding. This process is based on a principle which postulates that there is an enhanced reactivity and mobility of the molecular species at the phase-transformation temperature and this effect is utilized for interparticle bonding in powder compacts. This note summarizes the results obtained in an attempt to utilize this technique to produce ceramic-metal composites. In this case, a decomposition reaction of a compound (which after decomposition yielded an oxide) was used to achieve interparticle bonding in ceramic-metal composites. The reactive hot pressing was carried out in a Phillips induction heating unit, using either a graphite or a high-temperature steel die which functioned as both the susceptor and the hot-pressing component. The die was heated to the desired temperature in a helium atmosphere. All cermets produced by this technique were based on alumina as the ceramic phase. Different metal phases such as iron, copper, and chromium were used to study the effect of varying the metal phase on the properties of the composite. a Mono-hydrate (Boehmite) was mixed with different proportions of metal powders (-325 mesh) in dry condition in a mortar and pestle. "This paper examines the change in surface properties of the Polyurea used on spirals at different operational times: unused spiral, 28 months in operation and 58 months in operation. This is being done to investigate the alleged statement that spirals have a decrease in spiral separation efficiency after a certain period of operational time. Observing the surface characteristics under 1.5x and 36x magnification it can be concluded that the surface roughness decreases with increased operational time. This may be explained by a decrease in air inclusions and streak lines as the spiral surface wears. Decreased surface roughness should in theory have a beneficial effect on spiral separation performance. This leads to the conclusion that if a decrease in spiral separation performance is observed after a certain period of operation, it can’t be attributed to the change in surface properties. Uneven wear of the spiral surface, material creep or application of force to the spiral will change the profile of the spiral and could cause an adverse effect on spiral separation performance. The metallurgical test work showed that the best results are obtained at 30 - 35% solids by mass in the spiral feed. The iron recovery was significantly higher in the new spiral in comparison to the 2012 and 2010 spirals. The mass yield to concentrate in the new spiral was approximately three times more than for the older spirals. Mechanization has been at the core of productivity improvements since the industrial revolution. During the past 20 years, mining has derived spectacular progress from mechanization. In the future, however, mechanization alone will not be enough. In the next few decades, automation will bring about new generations of highly productive and safe machines, with low operating costs. Increased use of new and better technology is generally accepted as the prime factor capable of closing the productivity gap. The productivity gap is the difference between inflation and metal prices. The three S-curves in Fig. I represent the evolution of technology in general, and mining in particular. TI represents incremental changes. the dominant sort of technology changes in the mining industry: - Better drills, electric hydraulic drills vs. pneumatic drills, the drilling rate is twice as fast. - Better steel and bits, to accommodate the higher performance drills. - Improved chemical explosives. - Bigger trucks in open pits.

A leach pad’s fluid flow characteristics greatly affect the recovery of metals from heap leaching. However, because there are other factors such as particle size distribution, application rate and method, and chemical reactions to consider, mining companies often overlook potential problems associated with fluid flow until it is too late. In an effort to better understand the dynamics of fluid flow in leach pads, a series of experiments were preformed using temperature probes. A model leach pad was set up using a particle size distribution, fluid application rate, and application method common to modern leaching methods. Variable water temperatures were applied in succession and data gathered from the three dimensional grid of temperature probes built in to the model. Current work is analyzing these data along with visual observations of the model, computer simulations, past mining experiences, and other related research, in an attempt to develop a low cost test that could be performed prior to large scale leaching to determine the fluid flow characteristics of a particular ore. This paper will summarize the work and findings to this point as well as suggest areas of additional related research.

The Bureau of Mines examined and tested the rhodonite deposits of the Silverton lead-zinc district, San Juan County, Colo., as a possible source of domestic manganese. Exploration and development work by several mining companies and preliminary reconnaissance of the area by Bureau of Mines engineers indicated the presence of extensive manganese resources in the form of rhodonite. This report summarizes the results of laboratory beneficiation tests made on samples of different type and grade material obtained from surface and underground exposures of seven veins in the district. Surface and underground examinations revealed the presence of several prominent veins that could be traced up to 2 miles for a single vein along the surface. The principal veins average about 50 feet in width and apparently carry rhodonite to considerable depth. Underground samples were taken from the Sunnyside, Silver Queen, Washington, Independence, and Scotia veins. Samples also were taken from surface exposures of the Sunnyside Extension and Hidden Treasure veins.

Pegmatites in Colorado occur for 150 miles along the Front Range (eastern-most range of the Rocky Mountains) from Larimer County on the north to Canon City on the south, and west into the Gunnison area. Many of the deposits have been classified. Minerals found in the various dikes include beryl, scrap and possibly punch mica, lithium-bearing minerals, columbite-tantalite, feldspar, and several rare minerals. Pegmatites are abundant in the Crystal Mountain district in Larimer County. About 5 miles south of the Crystal Mountain district and often identified with that district is the Hyatt pegmatite area. The Hyatt Ranch deposit has attracted particular attention because of the comparatively high beryl con-tent of the upper part exposed in opencut workings.

ABSTRACT Hydrophobic polystyrene nanoparticles were evaluated as potential flotation collectors for pentlandite. The flotation of hydrophilic glass beads demonstrated the nanoparticles’ ability to induce flotation. Deposition of nanoparticles on glass surfaces increased the contact angle and enhanced adhesion of the beads to air bubbles. High flotation recoveries were achieved when 5–10% of the bead surfaces were covered with nanoparticles. Surface functionalization—the addition of vinylimidazole to polystyrene nanoparticle surfaces—caused the nanoparticles to selectively deposit onto pentlandite surfaces in the presence of Mg-Si slimes.
