Este trabalho objetiva o estudo da influência da adição de fibras vegetais de bambu e cana-de-açúcar nas propriedades mecânicas do concreto. Para este trabalho foram confeccionados corpos-de-prova cilíndricos e prismáticos nos quais foram adicionados 2% e 5% em volume das fibras à massa do concreto. Após a cura, conforme NBR 5738 (2003) [1], os mesmos foram testados via ensaios de resistência à compressão conforme NBR 5739 (2007) [2], resistência à tração por compressão diametral, conforme NBR 7222 (2011) [3], resistência à tração na flexão conforme NBR 12142 (2010) [4] e módulo de elasticidade estático, conforme NBR 8522(2008) [5]. Verificou-se após os testes que todos os concretos produzidos atenderam a resistência mínima a compressão de 20 MPa, recomendado pela NBR 6118 (2003) [6] para fins estruturais. Foi observado um aumento da resistência à compressão em relação à mistura padrão. O concreto com adição de fibras de bambu apresentou melhor resistência mecânica em relação ao concreto com adição das fibras de cana-de-açúcar e ao concreto sem adição.

Employee safety and health is of paramount importance for SME and its members. Many SME members work daily in our Nation's mines or have a direct impact on others that work in the mines. SME supports the mission and purpose of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), which is to prevent all injuries and disease from mining and to promote safe and healthful workplaces for the Nation's miners. SME supports the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and university research geared toward prevention of all occupational injuries and illnesses. SME maintains that laws and regulations governing the mining industry need to be based on sound scientific principles to ensure that workplace solutions can be readily implemented and that solutions to safety and health problems are fully realized.

Zircon is a naturally occurring silicate of zirconium, which is used in large quantities (~1 million tonnes per annum) for its refractory properties and its extreme chemical inertness. All zircons contain uranium and thorium bound into the crystal lattice, generally at levels up to 500 ppm of uranium plus thorium. This paper focuses on one aspect of the zircon industry—the ability to safely transport large quantities of zircon sand. Currently zircon is not classified as a radioactive material for transport purposes. However, this is because of a factor used in the exemption clauses of the IAEA code on safe transport of radioactive materials. The objective of this study was to determine the validity of this factor, and was submitted as part of an IAEA Coordinated Research Project (CRP). The study is based primarily on measured rather than modelled data and covers the transport of large quantities of zircon from producers in South Africa to customers in Europe. Both occupational exposure of workers and exposure of members of the public have been considered. The transport routes studied cover rail, road, ocean-going ship and inland barge transport of unpackaged bulk products. The study showed that the most exposed member of the public would receive 10µSv/annum,while the most exposed worker would receive 144µSv/annum of exposure. It is concluded that these levels are well below all regulatory limits for such activities involving naturally occurring materials. The study also showed that normal operational exposures are higher than those in accident scenarios, a feature which does not occur with higher activity materials. It is further concluded that the study validates the use of the factor of 10 in TS-R-1, as applied to zircon sand. Additionally it is also concluded that the exemption currently applied to the transportation of bulk zircon sand is valid.

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to the coal-mining industry's underground and open-pit mines that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

Consideráveis esforços vêm sendo realizados para aumentar o desempenho das operações metalúrgicas e a qualidade do aço produzido. Nesse sentido, o papel das escórias no processamento do aço tem se tornado de muita importância. Com o objetivo da otimização das escórias, numerosos estudos têm sido conduzidos para uma melhor compreensão do efeito da composição química e demais propriedades da escória sobre a viscosidade, bem como, sua influência sobre o controle da limpeza inclusionária. Também se tem observado uma evolução das técnicas experimentais de laboratório que são empregadas para a investigação estrutural e medidas das propriedades físicas das escórias. Essa evolução e investigação são fundamentais, inclusive, para o ambiente prático da indústria do aço.

The correlation of power consumed by a tumbling mill with the dimensions, speed, and load has been attempted by three principal methods. One of these, the torque formula, has been reviewed critically elsewhere.' This approach, while analytical, disregards the individual motion and speed of the tumbling bodies and assumes that the gross geometry of the entire load is sufficient to establish the power requirement. A more general approach, using dimensional analysis, has been applied in this laboratory by the present authors1'1, and more recently by Rose.3 This disregards the internal conditions within the mill entirely and in effect is an empirical procedure for correlating data. Finally, the complete analysis of tumbling mill dynamics as first made by Davis' attempts to develop the power requirement from individual ball and rod paths and velocities. Although Davis' result is applicable only at a single speed for a given size and load it could be useful, since his optimum speed is at the upper limits of conventional tumbling mill practice. Where power values predicted by the Davis equation were compared with actual mill requirements, they were found too low for small mills and much too high for the largest mills. This suggested that the agreement with actual intermediate range requirements might be fortuitous, and the development of the equation was examined critically. The probable source of error was found to lie in an erroneous assumption made by Davis in converting the energy of ball or rod motion to power. With the same approach, but with different assumptions, a modified equation has been obtained which predicts results that are usually consistently high. This is to be expected, since it is assumed that there is no slip between load and shell and no interference among tumbling bodies. Both these effects should account for the difference. Development of Equation: When a cylindrical shell charged with a substantial weight of rods or balls is slowly rotated about a horizontal axis, the load surface first assumes an inclination that gradually increases to a maximum. Continued rotation results in failure within the load, characterized by a sliding of the top layers down the slope and a reduction in the angle of inclination. Further rotation again increases the angle, and the cycle repeats. If the speed is increased, there is continuous load failure and build-up and a continuous stream of rods or balls descends over the upcoming mass, which moves in circular arcs. Mining is a risky business. The cost of exploring for new mineral deposits is high and the success rate of finding one worthy of development is relatively low. And once a deposit is identified, there is no guarantee that it will become a mine. Mining companies have to spend a lot of time and money on due diligence, prefeasibility and feasibility studies, and sustainable development and environmental issues before deciding whether the deposit will become a profitable mine. And then there are the millions of dollars spent in developing the deposit and building a mine. No wonder the mining industry has trouble attracting investment capital. Companies take a large risk in developing reserves and investors take a similar risk in investing in them. So mining companies must be as accurate as possible in determining mineralization that makes it to reserve status. After all, reserves are a company’s most important asset and one of the critical factors analysts and funding sources look at when determining if a mine or mining company is worth the risk.

Review of equipment, performance, and shaft design plans including head-frames for sinking and forms for lining are given. Also included are comparative data for shafts of 11 x20 ft and 193/4 x 30 ft with 756 and 666-ft depths, respectively. Advantage from curtain wall installation with "slip forms" which warrant consideration for normal lining are outlined. A preliminary review is also made of "chemical grouting" to stop water inflow leakage with Halliburton equipment and service. Two coal mine shafts recently completed in Franklin County, Ill., afford experience and accomplishment to warrant review. These shafts provide access to a tract with a potential recovery of one hundred million tons. This work provided the initial sinking by other than a contractor's organization since 1918. Four additional shafts required during the interim were sunk under contract arrangement with others. Supervisory contact and inspection afforded experience to govern planning and conduct of the recent work. TEST DRILLING Core test holes were drilled within each of the two shaft locations. Four additional cable tool holes were drilled on a radius of 700 ft from the shaft bottom to determine the coal seam elevations and govern the underground layout plans for each shaft. A graphic log of the hoist shaft test drillhole is shown by Fig. 1. A very soft sandstone was found at a depth of 16 ft. Cored recovery of the sandstone proved much weaker than the overlying compacted sand secured with coring facilities for soil recovery. Gradation from the very soft sandstone to fairly hard material occurred with the next 14 ft, extending to a depth of 30 ft. The weak character within the upper portion entailed need of adequate protection when sinking as described later. A part of the sandstone provided sufficient porosity and permeability to warrant further investigation. Adjacent cable tool drilling for temporary water supply disclosed inflow was limited to 2 gpm with a depth of 40 ft. It was increased to 12 gpm during the next 50 ft of drilling and occasioned subsequent precaution when sinking. General arrangement of facilities for sinking the hoist shaft is shown by Fig. 2. An available steel frame building was used to accommodate the hoist, compressor, shop, and shower or change room. The stiff leg derrick with 90-ft length of boom permitted removal of forms from the wood shop to the storage area or delivery within the shaft. Reinforcing steel and other needs were similarly handled, in addition to headframe erection. The headframe was placed over one end of the shaft to enable passage of forms for lining through the adjacent half next to the stiff leg derrick. In order that the use of continuous mining machines be most economic, the equipment must be operated at rated capacity as much of the time as possible and downtime for repairs kept at a minimum. A large factor influencing any proposals for maintenance programs is the complexity of the machines—often the intricacies of the precision-built equipment requires engineering knowledge byond the scope of mine maintenance personnel. A training program is part of the answer; there are others. In addition to investigating a joint company-manufacturer equipment-design improvement program, Mountaineer Coal Co. has launched a detailed preventive maintenance program to combat extensive downtime often encountered when continuous miners are used. Everyone in the coal industry knows the importance of operating continuous miners at their rated capacity as much of the time as possible. The potential capacity of the miner is such that l-min. delay means from 3 to 8 tons of coal lost. Today's miner is a well designed, precision-built machine, complicated with hydraulic and electrical equipment and complex mechanical assemblies with all possible combinations of gears, levers, and rods. As the machine becomes more complex, the problem of maintenance becomes more acute. The transition from conventional to continuous mining has taken place so rapidly that the mine mechanic has been unable to keep pace. When there is a machine failure, the maintenance man usually employs either the trial-and-error or the play -it-by-ear method of repair, but this represents an expensive proposition. Mine mechanics, maintenance superintendents, and mine managers complain about the complexity of the machines and how difficult it is to keep them running. There is no shortage of skill in the design offices. Machines are designed by good engineers, but for engineers. What's the answer? Better trained maintenance men—better maintenance instruction—better field service. These are all good corrective measures, but the real cure is to provide for the men at the do it level. Designers have got to cooperate with men to simplify maintenance on the increasingly complex machine. The designer must be aware of how his machine can be maintained. Sometimes a simple design change in a bearing, oil seal, or a bushing will correct recurrent breakdowns. Parts such as filters, hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and pivot pins can be better arranged on the machine to make them accessible so that the mine mechanic can easily keep the machine producing. Therefore, to get our maintenance off on the right foot, the program must begin back in the design office, before the machine is delivered to the mine property. Realizing the importance of this aspect, our company set out on a joint company-manufacturer equipment-design improvement program. This is a formal program in which quarterly reports are written covering machine defects, design weakness, and general problems relating to machine maintenance and performance. The manufacturer in turn comments on each and every item appearing in these reports, indicating the action he proposes to take. In addition to the written reply, meetings are scheduled with manufacturer representatives to discuss further the outlined problems. The benefits realized from this organized program are both substantial and far reaching. Good maintenance begins with a good design. The subject of preventive maintenance is not a new one. Volumes have already been written on the subject. It consists primarily of doing the maintenance work when you want to rather than when the machine demands it. However, a preventive maintenance program can be overdone. Theoretically, if carried to ridiculous extreme, all working time could be spent inspecting and repairing the machines and no time would be left for production output. Our goal in maintenance is to maximize running time for all machines, and to prevent or at least minimize production downtime. Paper presented at a meeting on: Artificial intelligence in the minerals sector, held in Nottingham, UK, 20 April 1993. The design and scheduling of open pit operations are consistent problems encountered by the surface mining industry. Numerous techniques and algorithms have been developed to assist the mining engineer in the creation of optimum development strategies. Virtually all the practical techniques that have been produced have concentrated on one of the aspects (limit definition or scheduling) at the expense of the other. It has long been recognised, however, that the two activities are intrinsically linked and thus solving either problem independently of the other can only ever produce sub-optimal results as a whole. This has been termed the "circular reasoning problem". It has also been recognised that, for all practical-sized situations, solving both problems simultaneously is virtually impossible using conventional techniques due to the massive size of the search space involved. A technique is presented which is based on a self-learning genetic algorithm, which provides a combined pit limit and extraction schedule simultaneously in order to maximise the NPV (net present value) of the extraction. The theory is developed in two-dimensions and a number of examples of its application are presented. It is proposed that this approach is a highly efficient, heuristic technique offering the potential to transcend the circular reasoning difficulties of separate pit limit and extraction scheduling systems. In considering the cost of rock excavation, but little attention has been given to the economical handling and breaking up of boulders. Very few records seem to have been kept as to the cost of such work, and although it is difficult for this reason, to set a fair price for breaking up and handling boulders of various sizes, yet the cost of this detail work enters very materially into the cost of solid rock excavation. The subject is worthy of close and prolonged study.

A mobile vacuum sweeper to remove loose coal and coal dust from underground coal mine workings was designed, built, tested, and evaluated. The design was based on an extensive test program. Pick up and conveying rates vs. air volumes, velocities, and nozzle shapes were determined for coal rubble in a laboratory pneumatic handling system. A gas/solids separation system was developed and tested in the laboratory capable of separating the solids loading from the vacuum system air stream to the very high degree required to preclude degradation of the ambient (mine) air. Two designs were made, one for belt conveyor and one for general district cleanup. The belt cleanup machine was chosen for test and demonstrated in an underground coal mine performing cleanup work in belt haulageways and on ribs.

This study analyzes the safety, technology, and economic impact of eliminating safety fuse from metal/nonmetal mines, based on operation and manufacturer experience over the past five to ten years. If safety fuse is eliminated, blasting accidents will decrease with no technical impact except for some limited, specific applications. The economic impact will be minor for large operations, but will be significant enough for small operations that some small operations will likely close rather than change. The majority of the mines would probably change over, with the extra cost absorbed by the market. Elimination of safety fuse would have obvious impact on the two manufacturers of safety fuse; one manufacturer already produces an alternative system, and will remain unaffected; the other will be affected if they do not change their production strategy. There will be a very minor effect on the mining industry as a whole due to abolishment of safety fuse from the standpoint of employment or production.

"Dilution — planned and unplanned – remains a significant cost impairment in the mining process. A series of trials were held over a sixmonth period in fiscal year 2018 (FY18) that established the cost-benefit of new technology as it applies to the alignment accuracy of production drilling rigs in underground mining, thus confirming its ability to limit drilling as one of the causes of dilution. The trials identified three underlying factors affecting drilling accuracy, measurable by blast-hole deviation surveys of planned versus actual toe data. These were rig alignment error, collar location change/ error and in-hole deviation.The trials involved a comparison of existing rig setup processes and technology, with the new technology (Minnovare’s Production Optimizer system). The trials were undertaken in the same environment: the Cracow gold mine, an operating underground mine. The comparison first revealed the extent to which rig alignment impacts blast-hole deviation. Secondly, the new technology was proven to limit rig alignment error, thereby reducing average blast-hole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160 percent.The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore. The new technology was implemented at Cracow during the latter half of 2018. Despite utilizing the new technology for just six months of the year, the mine recorded a 5 percent overall reduction in dilution for the full year compared to the previous year (FY17); from 22 percent down to 17 percent (a net decrease of 22.7 percent). Mine management attribute a significant proportion of this reduction to the new technology, along with sequencing and planning improvements. This opinion is backed by detailed stope reconciliation data taken during the trial from 28 stopes — representing 20 percent of the total tonnes mined during FY18. The data identified that stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6 percent less average dilution."

The Objective: To reduce the noise generated by the exhausting air from a pneumatic roof bolting drill to a maximum of 90 decibels. Any attachment used for this purpose must be lightweight and must not cause a significant increase in back pressure. The Approach: Absorb the noise with a properly designed muffler that will permit sufficient airflow without affecting the normal operation of the drill. How It Works: The air exhausted by the drill enters the muffler through perforated disks into a resonator chamber. It then passes through a series of expansion and contraction chambers and is expelled to the atmosphere through another perforated disk. The basic muffler design for the pneumatic drill was established by using both digital computer analysis and experimentally simulated noise tests. "Consumer products are a complex man-made mixture of sometimes in excess of 50 elements. In order to recover these complex mixtures of elements either as metals, compounds or energy requires versatile technology in physical separation but also smelting and energy recovery. This paper explores this by referring to the innovative application of Top Submerged Lance (TSL) technology and associated theoretical and environmental aspects to process (recycle) post consumer materials and industrial intermediate products and residues. A diversity of applications has been tested in Ausmelt’s pilot plant in Dandenong and many have gone to commercial scale globally. This paper reviews the varied applications ranging from e-waste recycling, lead and NiCd battery recycling, metals recovery from slags, zinc leach residue processing, electric arc furnace (EAF) dust, Municipal Waste Incinerator bottom ash processing, carbon containing residues such as retort ashes and spent pot liner from the aluminium production process as well as use of the technology for materials such as automotive shredder residue (ASR) and plastics. Introduction The modern resource cycle is a link between primary production of metals linked to the recycling of post-consumer goods. The sometimes complex combinations of materials and metals in consumer products such as televisions depicted by Figure 1, does require a range of technology to recover materials, metals and energy for reuse and/or recycling in an economically feasible as well as environmentally friendly manner."

"The Dumont deposit is a large (1,179 Mt proven and probable reserve) low grade (0.27% nickel), nickel sulphide project located in the Abitibi region 25km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the project from a scoping study in 2010 through to completing the feasibility study in July 2013.The Dumont deposit in a nickel deposit with the recoverable nickel contained in three minerals; pentlandite, haezlewoodite and awaruite. The minerals are recovered by a combination of flotation and magnetic separation. Over the course of the studies many flowsheet design decisions and changes were made. This paper outlines an overview of the project, flowsheet design including the comminution circuit, desliming and awaruite recovery. The overall resulting flowsheet that was used for the feasibility study is then presented along with the confirmatory locked cycle testing that showed the feasibility design basis was able to produce the predicted concentrate grade and recovery.IntroductionRoyal Nickel Corporation (RNC) is a mineral resource company headquartered in Toronto, Canada, primarily focused on the exploration, evaluation, development and acquisition of base metal and platinum group metal properties. RNC's principal asset is the Dumont Nickel project (Dumont project) located in the established Abitibi mining camp, 25 km northwest of Amos, Quebec. RNC acquired a 100% interest in the Dumont property in 2007. The mineral claims covering the Dumont deposit are currently held 98% by RNC and 2% by Ressources Québec.The Dumont project is located in the province of Quebec in the municipalities of Launay and Trécesson approximately 25 km by road northwest of the city of Amos, 60 km northeast of the industrial and mining city of Rouyn-Noranda and 70 km northwest of the city of Val d’Or."

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo mostrar o Programa da Qualidade desenvolvido na Gerência de Laminação a Quente da Votorantim para aperfeiçoar o sistema de gestão da qualidade. Tendo como base a melhoria no método de análise dos parâmetros de processo e produto, foi identificada a oportunidade de desenvolver um modelo integrado com a finalidade de coletar resultados dos parâmetros produtivos de forma instantânea, obtendo o controle online do processo e produto. A implantação do ProQuali possibilitou a realização de análises de campanha para produtos críticos pela equipe técnica e auxiliou a equipe operacional na tomada de decisão online durante o processo. Com isto foi possível evidenciar uma evolução significativa nos principais indicadores do laminador: índice de rendimento metálico (RM), utilização (IU) e geração de produtos não conforme (NC).
